The War Within: A Fresh Sound in the World of CCM
The War Within is a fresh face to the contemporary Christian music scene. John Harter is a gifted songwriter who has honed his craft by fusing the vitality of indie pop with the great melodies of modern CCM and other influences. The War Within is more than just another generic musical act, and that’s what sets it apart. He has worked hard to develop his own unique style, letting his personal experiences and feelings inform the content of his songs rather than falling back on tired clichés and formulas. Because of John’s powerful and approachable persona as a singer and songwriter, this is not only a fantastic way for artists to get a distinctive sound, but also a fantastic chance for The War Within to become a household name. His music has its origins in the worship music scene, but it also has a unique quality that sets it apart. The artist’s lyrics and melodies are, as the project’s name suggests, haunting and dark. Some of the artists in this group put a strong emphasis on the positive, praising God and the vibrant beauty of his love. Don’t get me wrong, I think these artists are doing fantastic work, and I appreciate what they’re creating. Every single one of us has our share of difficulties. Jesus, the most righteous man who ever lived, fought his own “war within” when he was tempted by the devil in the desert. Even after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, Jesus was tempted by Satan with many earthly delights. It wasn’t an easy fight, and many people deal with difficulties like that every day. The good news is that God encourages us all to draw courage from Jesus and wisdom from his example as we struggle with our own personal demons. Having faith in Christ gives us something to hold on to even when times are tough and the odds seem stacked against us. The EP “Stone Heart” was just released, and it features four brand new songs written by the artist that delve into profound, inward themes. This album exemplifies the art of thoughtful Christian songwriting and production by striking a perfect balance between accessibility and originality. The War Within also released an album titled here/after, which featured cover versions of their previous material. There are 40 songs on the album, a significant number when you consider Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Whether or not the album’s title was chosen for its spiritual significance, it is still an incredibly moving and inspiring undertaking. Given the anxiety and hardship caused by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the release of here/after couldn’t have come at a better time for listeners. The War Within has made it clear that they are willing to support and work with other artists in the worship music community, despite the fact that opportunities for coming together and collaborating are limited. These creatives haven’t given up because they’ve been encouraged by their faith to make something bigger than themselves. This album cover is something truly unique. This new Christian album puts heart and soul into its core concept. If you like the music of influential groups like Hillsong, Bethel, or Elevation Worship, you’ll probably dig this. At this point, it is safe to say that The War Within has been going strong since its inception. The act has had a string of hits with excellent albums, and his discography is so expansive that it includes everything from catchy new hooks to driving melodies and rhythms. Review: Florian Picasso switches things up with ‘Waking Dream’
Image credit: Olivia Lamm With his latest track, House producer Florian Picasso has strayed into new territory. Having previously released predominantly Tech House music – or at least this remains true for the other singles he released earlier this year (‘Unwind’, ‘The Edge’, ‘Make Me Dance’) – his new single, out this Friday, is something different. Pre-save ‘Waking Dream’ Still falling under the House umbrella, his newest track, ‘Waking Dream’, is lighter and more easy-listening. Well, then, what genre would this fall under, precisely? The La Californie Musique producer tells us: “I have been very influenced by the French touch like Cassius and Fred again’s groove for this one.” ‘Waking Dream’ begins with a soulful piano. Next, it adopts a set of driving drums, a melody-guided bassline, and, as is Florian’s style, a series of vocal cuts that bolster the track’s internal rhythm. Then, a gospel organ takes over to heighten the track’s fervour, before it returns to its prior enthusiastic state. Producer E39 and band KARMACODA announce official remix of ‘Time Flies’
Image credit: Bill Shupp Electronica band KARMACODA will be releasing a new rework of their original track by the same name this Friday. Titled ‘Time Flies (E39 Spring Ahead Mix)’, the track was remixed by the New York producer Peter Tanico and has been attributed to his moniker, E39. Out soon via Sola Musa Music. Pre-save ‘Time Flies (E39 Spring Ahead Mix)’ The remix follows another official remix that he crafted for the San Francisco-based band, a track named ‘Dare (E39 Mixshow)’, which adds to the band’s extensive remix catalogue. Their catalogue includes work by the duo Extrawelt and multi-instrumentalist Sailor & I among others. The band’s lead singer shared her thoughts: “E39 has produced my favorite remixes for KARMACODA, so when he said ‘yes’ to remixing ‘Time Flies’ I told B, ‘we’ve got to jump at the chance!’ It is exactly what I hoped for. You will move, you’ll head bob, it’s a bop! So good.” The remix is an old-school House reinterpretation of the original. The kick and snare set an easy-going groove, enhancing the reflective mood of the band’s vocals. Tropical guitars add a dream-like feeling, and a muffled, pitched-down vocal textures the beat, layering on an extra dimension. Blood Oyster Releases a New ‘Greatest Hits’ Compilation and Visualizer Movie In Support of Planned Parenthood
In 2021, YEDM did a New Artist Spotlight on Portlander experimental artist Jason Wann and his conceptual project SINES which, at that time, was on its third multi-track release. Through that album, called A Series of Moments, Wann combined all the best bits of synth pop and gave them a modern twist with dabbles of female vox accompaniments and different beat structures. Not afraid to play with future bass, techno, bass house and, of course, vintage synth pop, SINES shows great promise to be the next Odesza or Washed Out hybrid. Not a lot of fans or press, for that matter, knew that between all the lovely and celestial synth pop releases, Wann was also interstitially releasing under a different project name called Blood Oyster. Almost completely opposite in every way from SINES, Blood Oyster is entrenched in booty bass, hip hop and trap with an emphasis on ‘booty.’ The aptly named Let Booty Loose featuring rapper Honey B. Sweet released in April 2021 followed by the even dirtier Pussy Power in October while Wann and SINES music partner Kitty Richardson were working on A Series of Moments. It must have been a colossal brain toggle for Wann. Designed as a tongue-in-cheek nose-thumbing at the patriarchy and its need to control women’s bodies, Blood Oyster is about as intentionally nasty as a 2LiveCrew or a WAP with track names like “From the Back” and “Throbbing Hard Penis.” As these ironic statement EPs that are seemingly about objectification were being made, Wann was becoming more and more frustrated with the way women are either exploited or repressed over the last few years. This frustration culminated, as it did for so many Americans, in the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in June of 2022. Seen by many as the ultimate and most blatant sign that the US not only doesn’t care about bodily autonomy for women and people with uteruses, this decision, made possible by the ushering in of two new far right wing SCOTUS justices before the end of Donald Trump’s presidential has unleashed a wave of states winding back the clock to pre-1973 rules and regulations. States banned abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood, made even early term abortions illegal (including in cases of rape) and some states even made it possible for parents who went through with an abortion to be tried for murder. With the dystopian nightmare described in Margaret Atwood’s fictional book The Handmaid’s Tale suddenly turned reality and Atwood a prophetess thanks to Brett Kavanaugh and especially ultimate Gilead Wife Amy Coney Barrett, loads of artists decided to protest what has now been going on in the US for just about a year. Along with the likes of Pussy Riot, Phoebe Bridgers, Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo, Mariah Carey, Lizzo et al., Wann felt he couldn’t leave this issue alone. Suddenly a cheeky commentary on how women are used in media and abused in private turned into an all-out protest with Greatest Hits. Full of tracks from the original two Blood Oyster EPs plus heaps more, the 30-track Greatest Hits makes a bold statement that no matter what sort of laws are places on them, women’s bodies self-worth an sexuality will always be owned by them. Wann as Blood Oyster makes this statement in the most fun way possible, with loud, colorful booty bass beats, unapologetic lyrics and so many catchy tunes. Be careful; you could find yourself singing the Daft Punk-esque “ASS” in your head at work or laughing at the somehow both sexual and creepy “Everybody Loves Raymond” at inappropriate times. This whole “series of bootlegs” is inappropriate, of course, but that’s the point. A tapestry of impropriety woven with much more experimental music and flare than we’ve seen from Wann thus far, the album juxtaposes the pure sensual potential of women and humanity against some of its worst detractors so show what this oppression and control can actually do. With so many of our idols fallen and so much damage done in the name of propriety, it’s time to take a good hard look at rape culture; just ask “Dr. Huxtable.” As if the Blood Oyster album weren’t enough, Wann has also put together an arty “series of visualizers” (who knew that album name would be such a fun callback?) to go with Greatest Hits. Because it’s a bootleg album, Wann has put the veritable movie up on his Vimeo account for free public viewing. Not quite as dirty visually as it is musically, the multimedia side of Greatest Hits takes the artistry of the album up a few notches. Watch it with some good speakers on a good TV and you’ve basically got yourself an at-home rave. Funny, kitschy and full of the love Wann has for women that listeners to the album alone may not feel, the visualizer movie is definitely worth a watch (possibly on some mind-altering substances). Blood Oyster: The Movie! from jason wann on Vimeo. Even if you’re into into booty bass or experimental bass or fun visualizers, there’s another reason to support Blood Oyster and the Greatest Hits album: all profits from its purchase on Bandcamp will be donated to Planned Parenthood in Amy Coney Barrett’s name. That’s right, in the tradition of Mike Pence, Ted Cruz and other anti-uterus rights politicians, Wann has decided that Coney Barrett should be the next recipient of this honor to be reminded every day that those who value the lives of women and children will continue to fight for their health. The link for the album is here (and also in the video above) but we also encourage fans of ladyparts everywhere to take up this petty (and important) cause and donate to the thing SCOTUS and so many other misguided politicians are trying to destroy. And if you don’t want to donate, have a cheeky, sexy little rave in your living room or car, courtesy of Blood Oyster. This article was first published on Your EDM. 44 Ardent Releases Mesmerizing Single “bones (sinking like stones)”
44 Ardent is a master at his craft, with a unique capability at blending ambient soundscapes with addictive deep house grooves. His latest single “bones (sinking like stones)” is no exception, beautifully showcasing not only his talent, but how truly special of an artist he is. The vocals has a tranquil, nearly blissful quality that soothes your body instantaneously while swaying percussion and soft synth melodies envelop your in a warm embrace. “This song was written in early 2022 when Meanjin (Brisbane) was flooding. Floods are heartbreaking times and can be life-changing experiences for those involved. The flood was devastating, but it also highlighted the strength and resilience of our community. It’s quite easy to lose faith in humanity sometimes, but during the floods, everyone rallied together and there were countless people helping total strangers to clean up and move belongings. So, to me, I found that there was some beauty in amongst all the destruction – a silver lining, I suppose. This song is a bit of a reflection on the emotions I was feeling at the time. It was initially a much slower, sadder song, but over time during the writing process, I ended up speeding it up a fair bit and changing the style. I suppose at its core, it’s a song about people coming together in difficult times. I like to think that most people are inherently good and trying their best, and times like these do help to reinforce that belief.” ~ 44 Ardent Listen below! Kill The Noise, Feed Me & Tasha Baxter reunite for new collab, “Mirage”
After five years, dance music veterans Kill The Noise and Feed Me reunite on their collab “Mirage” as the second single from Kill The Noise’s third studio album HOLLOW WORLD. Gritty warehouse beats and hypnotic chants proceed a cathartic second half in a blend of thumping techno, industrial and progressive. “Mirage” also shows a second glimpse into the major themes of ‘HOLLOW WORLD’ through Tasha Baxter’s lyrics of anguish, emptiness and desperation in the age of digital consumption. The collab is the fourth between Kill The Noise and Feed Me who famously paired up to produce the now-legendary hit on Skrillex’s label OWSLA, “I Do Coke.” It’s also the second between Tasha Baxter and Kill The Noise who worked with Bro Safari on “As Above So Below” and the fourth between her and Feed Me. Tiësto delivers the first-ever remix of AQUA’s iconic hit song, “Barbie Girl”
The new Barbie movie is due for release in just over a month, July 21. Alongside all of the many promotional materials for the arguably era-defining film starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling, Tiësto has teamed up with Danish Europop band AQUA for the first-ever official remix of their hit “Barbie Girl” since it was released in 1997. Unfortunately, the remix is nothing especially creative to write home about. It’s a dance remix of a europop song from nearly three decades ago — we’re not exactly reinventing the wheel here. Tiësto does his job admirably adding some modern synths and a different rhythm and drum pattern, but you’ll probably still end up playing the original far more. Listen below. RL Grime releases new song “Pour Your Heart Out” w/ 070 Shake after wiping his Instagram
Earlier this week, RL Grime wiped his Instagram. For those that have seen this tactic time and again, it’s pretty easy to infer that a new album is coming and thus we can assume that the new single “Pour Your Heart Out” with 070 Shake, released today, is the first single from the forthcoming project. RL Grime has released two albums previously, 2014’s debut VOID featuring hits like “Core” and “Scylla” and 2018’s NOVA that took his trap sound and expanded it with a more melodic twist, featuring artists like Miguel, Jeremih & Tory Lanez, Chief Keef, Ty Dolla $ign, and more. Since 2018’s NOVA, RL has only released a handful of singles, including “Fallaway” with Baauer and “Stinger” with ISOxo. It’s safe to say that we’re going to be hearing a lot more before the year is out with a full album release likely ahead of 2024. Check out “Pour Your Heart Out” below. KC Lights & Lapsley Team Up For Glimmering Summer Anthem, “Better Times” [TOOLROOM]
KC Lights is undoubtedly one of the most exciting artists of today, possessing creative ingenuity and brilliance that is rare to find. He’s seems to have the Midas touch, and his latest single, “Better Times,” is no exception to the greatness we’ve come to expect from him. Featuring the dazzling vocals of indie sensation Lapsley, the two make a dynamic team, whipping together a true summer anthem with sun kissed melodies and glimmering vibes all the way through. “Better Times” emanates with vibes of happy days, roller skating and dancing with a nimble touch of 70s/80’s disco, funk, and soul but with enough of an edge that you still know its 2023. KC Lights is masterful with his ability to blend these feelings with his recognizable signature sound. While the song acknowledges the essence of the past, it is also crafted to fit the present by becoming a modern, irresistible uplifting tune. Even better, industry heavyweights such as BBC Radio One’s Danny Howard, KISS, Capital Dance, and Apple’s DanceXL have all given “Better Times” their stamp of approval. “The idea for ‘Better Times’ manifested while I was on the train to London to meet Lapsley for a writing session. I wanted a sound that felt warm and familiar but also new and exciting. Almost immediately, Lapsley & I knew that we had a creative connection. A few hours later, we had written the track. We just knew the nostalgic vibe and sound felt so right. For me, ‘Better Times’ is about letting go of anything weighing you down in life and looking ahead optimistically. Looking ahead into summer, I think this song will be a big moment in my sets.” – KC Lights Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. St. Mary & GRAIL Join Forces For Enchanting New Song “RELIGION”
One of electronic music’s hottest rising talents St. Mary has teamed up with GRAIL for their first release of the new year, “RELIGION” out on Lowly. LA-based producer St. Mary hails from the small island country of Cyprus. She has quickly become one electronic music’s most innovative new producers. Her new release “RELIGION” with GRAIL uses soft piano keys to paint a serene soundscape as the record commences. Beautifully distorted vocal synth work acts as a call to action as RELIGION progresses. The buildup is filled with euphoric and anthemic elements as the record plays on. The global sound and exquisite production in “RELIGION” surely defines St. Mary and GRAIL’s place within electronic music. Read more about what ST. MARY had to say about creating “RELIGION”: “Our aim with the record’ was to implement a euphoric element to the high-energy festival music that we both love playing live. We wanted to bring a harder edge to it by introducing a hardwave twist to the overall sonic palette of this track. The more it progresses, the more melodically-driven it becomes. Leading up to the final drop, all the tension gets released into a fully evolved hardwave section, making it my favorite part of the song.” Listen to “RELIGION” by St. Mary and GRAIL below. Detroit Techno Maestro Henry Brooks: Staying True to the Underground [INTERVIEW]
The notoriously visceral and otherworldly DJ/producer known as Henry Brooks is on fire right now and destined to make his mark on techno as we know it, while staying true to the underground. Hot off two emotive sets over Movement weekend in Detroit, Brooks is practicing endurance, staying focused and grounded while traveling internationally and pursuing his passions. It’s a balancing act, “penning a new blueprint for dark dancefloors everywhere,” while playing shows, making original music, and managing his own event series, Anatomy. As for his distinct sound, Brooks “draws inspirational firepower from the classic, dizzying elixirs of techno elite like Jeff Mills, as well as many modern techno artists — all the while staying true to his own unique authentic expression as an artist, which translates to each original release and club set.” Every time we experience a set from Henry Brooks, his sound evolves and shapeshifts, leaving us breathless and inspired. His Movement 2023 set at the Underground Stage was no exception, as he busted out two hours of brutal rhythms with dark undertones contrasted by his playful demeanor behind the decks. The hypnotic and sophisticated side of Brooks we heard after hours earlier in the weekend shifted into his signature; driving, high-intensity techno to open the final day of the festival properly. We were grateful to catch up with Henry Brooks on this very special occasion and hope you enjoy hearing what’s going on in his world. After playing in so many new places around the world, how does it feel to be back in Detroit this weekend? It feels great to be back in Detroit for Movement! Coming back from Europe, I definitely feel more accomplished as an artist. I’ve reached a goal of mine that I’ve had for years, to travel overseas and play over there – and I’ve done that. I feel inspired after being exposed to different scenes and then coming back to America and wanting to build things in certain ways or different ways in Detroit. It definitely changed me as a person and as an artist. I’m feeling very inspired, also musically. Watching other DJs play in Berlin got me to reflect more on how I can evolve myself as a DJ and producer. I’m able to understand different crowds better and have learned how to navigate different styles; matching what the crowd is resonating with, but while also staying true to what I want to play myself. Last year you played Movement’s Detroit Stage and now you’re back at the Underground Stage, full force! What are some shining moments from the past year? This past year has been about elevating my career and being able to do this almost full time now. What has changed the most since I played Movement last year is being able to travel more and getting more and more gigs. I signed to an agency after Movement, released two other tracks, worked a lot on production and have some more tracks coming out soon as well. How did your Movement 2023 sets go — the testpilot afterparty and your proper set in the Underground? Both of my sets during Movement weekend were amazing! They were both quite different from each other as I had to cater to each event I was playing. Saturday I opened for testpilot, so I dialed things back a little and played more hypnotic and groovy. Monday at the festival I put the pedal to the metal and was able to go all out, setting the pace for the rest of the day at the Underground Stage. It was an amazing weekend overall. Do you remember what your first Movement was like? Yeah, my first Movement was in 2016 and it was a life-changing experience for me. I was still fairly new to the scene and I was able to absorb the different sounds and styles that were present at the festival back then – and overall broaden my horizons with various styles of house and techno. When did you first fall in love with techno — was it at Movement? Yeah, I officially began to fall in love with techno itself at Movement. Before then I was definitely more of a house head, but once I went to Movement and was exposed to more techno the genre started to grow on me. When I started out DJing, which was only just a couple of months after my first Movement, I was mainly playing house & tech house. However over the years, I started playing more and more techno, until I reached the point where I decided I only wanted to play techno. It was a natural progression. You’re a natural, so passionate and dedicated to your craft. What keeps you laser-focused like that? What keeps me focused is simply holding on to how much I love this music and love expressing through the tracks that I like to play, striving to tell a story in every set. It’s just a great form of expression for me. What inspires you to create your best work? What inspires me to create my best work is that I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so I’m always trying to better myself and do better than the last thing I did. I’m also trying to add my own stamp on techno and my own style and taste as a producer into the genre so I can build a collection of music that is uniquely me. What are some of the challenges you face as a DJ/producer? I think one of the hardest challenges is trying to find the balance of being both a DJ and producer. Being able to make enough tracks while still staying on top of my DJ career and traveling, because it definitely takes a lot of energy out of you. On the DJing side of things, it’s about staying on top of current music. I never try to play the same set twice, ever – so I’m always constantly finding new music. Managing all of that while still trying to manage my personal life as well and find the right balance. How much unreleased music do you have right now and can you describe it? Right now I have about three tracks fully finished that are unreleased. Most of the tracks I’m making currently are more on the textural, percussive, and hard tool side of techno. I’m trying to broaden my horizons instead of just making the harder techno that’s more based around heavy melodies. I’m finding new ways to push my sound design. Finding a balance between hypnotic elements while still keeping things hard and industrial. What’s the current state of your Anatomy series and the future of it? Anatomy is doing well. It’s been a bit of a challenge at times managing my DJ and producer career and on top of that booking artists and throwing events. But yeah, I’m definitely going to keep that going. I want to build the scene in Detroit and bring artists who haven’t ever been here or haven’t played here much. I’d like to bring through different styles of techno that are not played in Detroit as much year-round. So, yeah, definitely more events coming – I have a very exciting one coming up in July! Do you plan on taking Anatomy to other cities? Yes! I plan on taking Anatomy to other cities and building my brand in other places for sure. That’s definitely a goal of mine. Right now, I want to keep it mainly based in Detroit, but do have some ideas outside of the city as well, which will be coming soon. What was your experience like playing overseas, including the legendary techno nightclub Tresor Berlin? Playing overseas was incredible. It was great to see what the scene was like over in Europe and how events happen over there, the different crowds and being able to be a part of those parties. Playing at Tresor Berlin was insane as well. It’s like a very dark, grungy basement with just a few strobes and some fog. The current venue has been around since 2007 and before then, the original location started in the early ’90s. So in total, it’s the longest-running techno club in the world and it was an honor to play there. You’re checking off so many accomplishments that DJs aspire to do – like your HÖR set, which was brutal by the way! What was it like prepping for that set, knowing it would be seen and heard live around the world? Prepping for that set was a bit stressful, but I also didn’t want to overthink it. I grabbed some of my best tracks and some new tracks that I really liked, and put together a playlist of different energy levels and vibes as I always do. I picked the first two tracks I was going to play ahead of time – and other than that, the rest was all impromptu and on the fly. That’s very interesting when you have no crowd to read — and it’s not just a mix, it’s a performance! Yeah, you’re completely on your own. It was a small room with just a mixer, some CDJs and two small speakers. It was a little nerve-wracking at first, however I’ve done similar live streams before and after the first three or four tracks, I got fully locked into my groove and was just able to mix. Flash-forward a few weeks later to Charlotte De Witte KNTXT’s takeover in New York City. What was it like playing that show? Playing opening sets for bigger events can sometimes be hit or miss in terms of if people come early or not, however this one was amazing. It was a great crowd early on and within the first 30 minutes it was already starting to fill up really quick. Also, playing b2b with Hiroko Yamamura was a great experience. We meshed very well with our different sounds and styles. We ended up getting an extra 30 minutes to play as well. Do you have any dreams or aspirations you’d like to speak into existence? Some dreams and aspirations I have now are simply to play more across Europe until I’m at the point where I can go back and forth overseas on a regular basis. Also to play more around the world, Asia and Australia would be fun places to visit. Overall to keep broadening my scope of where I’m playing while coming back to North and South America to continue growing my fan base here. I’d also love play some major festivals like Awakenings, but continue to stay true to more intimate style underground clubs and still play a bunch of those. I don’t want to get to the point where I’m so big I’m only playing massive festivals, because I don’t want to lose the intimacy of smaller events. What does it mean to you to be representing Detroit techno right now? It feels great to represent Detroit techno and be a part of the next generation that’s pushing this genre and style. I want to keep pushing my sound and the style to new areas and always innovate – always adding more to the genre.
