  1. The Chemical Brothers are back with their newest experiment in blending psych rock and electronica with “No Reason” and another incredibly mind-bending music video. A highlight of the Grammy Award-winning band’s recent live shows and DJ sets, “No Reason” is unmistakable and irresistible, built from a cascading melody, a heavy acid riff and a snare roll that rattles like a military tattoo. The track comes with a surreal ‘Neon Marching Band’ video directed by longtime collaborators Smith and Lyall and choreographed and performed by Gecko Theatre that will be familiar to anyone who saw one of the band’s incredible 2022 festival appearances. “No Reason” is the first new music released by The Chemical Brothers since 2021’s “The Darkness That You Fear.” The band are currently working on the follow up to 2019’s hugely acclaimed album No Geography. 2. Future Sound of Egypt, the label from Aly & Fila, made history in 2017 when they, Armin van Buuren, and Paul Thomas played sets illuminated against the Great Pyramids of Egypt for the first time. Artists have played at worldwide iconic sites many times before, like Paul Oakenfold at Stonehenge or David Guetta at the Eiffel Tower. There’s something about dance music that seems to bring people from all cultures together (it’s also easier to travel with a pair of decks and a mixer than a full band). In less than two months, another legend will travel to Egypt for a legendary set at one of the world’s seven wonders: Carl Cox. “MAY 19th, 2023. EGYPT. THE GREAT PYRAMIDS OF GIZA. OH YES!!!!” His headline show will be supported by Philipp Straub and Gawdat. Tickets start at 3000 EGP ($100), with VIP tickets from 5000 EGP ($162). Click here to purchase. 3. I got a text from Sullivan King two days ago, “YOOOO you hitting that A7X forum show or what?” Of course, I’d already bought my tickets and responded with a screenshot of my seats and, “You fuckin know it.” On a personal level, I’ve known and have been covering Sullivan King since 2014 — I remember walking into Icon Collective, from which he’d just graduated, in 2015, for our first sit-down interview. We bonded over our appreciation of metal, especially Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu. I almost got my first tattoo of his signature on my chest (after he’d actually ripped my shirt open) after his show at the Belasco in Los Angeles in 2017, supporting Black Tiger Sex Machine. We’ve been through a lot and walked the same path in these past 9 years. Through two other studio albums, his first mainstage play at Lost Lands, headline sets in Los Angeles, he has continually honed his craft leading to today, the release of his newest and most ambitious and rock-influenced album, Thrones of Blood. The album’s collaborations span between Taylor Barber of Left To Suffer, to SVDDEN DEATH, Excision and more, and boasts previously released singles including the massive “The Dead March” with Ray Volpe, the speaker-shattering collaboration with Excision, “Fall Apart,” and the highly anticipated assaulting SVDDEN DEATH collaboration “Pursuit of Violence.” These are accompanied by new tracks like “Die By My Hand” with Vastive feat. Taylor Barber of Left To Suffer, “Riot” with Kai Wachi and more. There’s even a surprising sample of The Rock’s famous “Shut up, bitch!” toward the end of “End of Us.” Listening through the album, you’re bound to find a bunch of subtle (or not so subtle) nods to the past of metal and rock as well as plenty of influences from his contemporaries even outside of the explicit collaborations. Check it out below! Just days after the release of Thrones of Blood, Sullivan King is hitting the road on a 30+ date tour, headlining iconic venues including LA’s Hollywood Palladium (two nights in a row), Emo’s in Austin, DC’s Echostage, the Majestic Theater in Detroit, and more. This tour features special guests Kai Waichi & YOOKiE and support from Level Up, Benda, and Vastive. 4. It’s been 15 years since Kaskade and deadmau5 first paired up on “I Remember.” Today, only a little more than a full year since the two officially paired up as Kx5 for the release of their first single, “Escape” with Hayla, their debut, self-titled album Kx5 is officially out. The full album features 10 tracks, 6 of them previously released as singles. New additions include “Bright Lights” with AR/CO, “pwdr Blu” with Brother., “Eat Sleep” with Richard Walters, and the closing track on the album, “Unobsidian.” Even with only a few “new” songs in the final release (the amount of pre-album singles released is addressed in this recent interview by Billboard), Kx5 feels incredibly cohesive. It’s no surprise coming from two of dance music’s preeminent veterans. Listen to the full album below. Photo via Leah Sems This article was first published on Your EDM. 5. If you’ve been following the journey of Skrillex, Fred again.., and Four Tet this year, you might have come across the name Pangbourne House Mafia. The trio are back again following the release of two Skrillex albums, a sold-out Madison Square Garden show, and so much hype with one of their most anticipated singles since Fred again..’s Boiler Room set last year, “Baby again..” For those curious how PHM came to be, Skrillex shared the story on Instagram today for the track’s release: Last summer @fredagainagainagainagainagaiand I booked a little house on the river in this village called Pangbourne out side of london to work on music. I was working on my album and Fred was working on his boiler room. We invited @fourtetkieran over and told him he could Stay with us … he we like “I’ll come over and see what happens.” Then Fred and I clocked a tooth brush hanging out Kierens backpack … this moment marked the birth of the Pangbourne House Mafia … The song prominently samples Lil Baby’s “Baby,” hence the title of their massive collaboration. The song has been a banner moment in many of Fred’s sets since Boiler Room, especially at MSG when the song coincided with the first time that night that the lights were brought down, creating an incredible effect. 6. The young and talented Galo has been making waves in the tech house scene with notable releases on Night Service Only, Hood Politics, Space Yacht, Uprise, and Do Not Duplicate. He’s also seen support from the likes of John Summit, Lee Foss, CID, Dr. Fresch, Gordo, David Guetta, Franky Rizardo, Liquid Todd and many others. His music speaks for itself and his latest single, “Lift Me Up“, shows this exciting artist returning to the premiere underground imprint, Hood Politics. It’s a sizzling peak time heater, led by a soulful vocal sample whilst electrifying synth stabs and a thumping groove. It’s impossible to not feel the energy here, and this is a tune sure to make waves next week at MMW during his upcoming set at the Hood Politics showcase. “Everyone who knows me knows I love a good diva vocal. This was one of those situations where I heard the sample and knew exactly what I wanted to write. The bass line is moving, the drums are grooving, the keys add some character, and the vocal takes it to the next level.” – Galo Check out “Lift Me Up” below! 7. Dea Magna has quickly risen the ranks in dance music, landing releases on Soave Records and Turn it up Muzik, offering a fresh blend of melodic, tech and deep house sounds, influenced by Camelphat, Meduza, Kx5. Dea has performed all over Los Angeles, including places like legendary Academy (booked by Insomniac Events), Catch One, Winston House, as well as in New York, Milan, Sofia, and Belgrade. Now, she’s teaming up with widely celebrated DJ/Producer for their thrilling new single, “Red Room”. It’s melodic techno at it’s finest, locking the listener in with a hypnotic groove and tantalizing synth melodies that seem to pulsate throughout your whole being. Renowned artist Pierre Stemmett provides a spectacular vocal performance, perfectly complimenting captivating production. “‘Red Room’ was inspired by dance music culture. We wanted to make a song that evokes the positive and uplifting emotions, that celebrates love and freedom from the mind. ‘Red Room’ is a place full of strobe lights and laser beams, where bass pulses through your body, and you can’t help but dance. Where the feelings that consume you are feelings of peace and happiness. It also in a way honors the return of such spaces into our lives after we lost them for a while.” – Dea Magna Listen below! 8. On a mission to help listeners realize their full potential and provoke self-appreciation through his music, Isaiah Brown closed out 2022 has proven to be an artist to watch. In November of last year, the rising artist dropped his debut album, DREAMERBOY, which received widespread attention for its innovative soundscapes and genre bending tracks. One of our favorites was “Me & U”, a trippy, soulful track landing somewhere between Diplo and James Blake. Now, Isaiah has released a visually compelling music to the song, packed with mesmerizing camera shots, transcendent effects, and vivid coloring, while centered around Isaiah himself. It seems to perfectly encapsulate the feeling you get listening to the song itself. “Despite all of the hardships and obstacles life can bring, the best thing we can do is continue to push for our dreams. This song has been in the works and on the back burner for so long, it reminds me how strong our determination can be and no matter what we will always find a way to rise above.” – Isaiah Brown Check it out below! 11. Mike Äpt’s latest release, “Bad One”, is a sonic ear candy that showcases his talent as an artist and his growth as a musician. Inspired by a girl he met in Sweden, the song is an upbeat pop track that is different from his usual R&B style. Working with his production team, which includes Bjorn Engelmann, Aldon Wells, and Wavy Duder, Mike was able to create a unique sound that captures the essence of the song’s inspiration. Mike’s production team has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, both in the US and abroad, and their expertise is evident in the final product. The songwriting process involved delving into Mike’s feelings and personal experiences, which he then translated into a sound that reflects his emotions. This dedication to authenticity is one of the reasons why “Bad One” is so special. While the track is released under Mike’s own label, Apt Records, LLC, it has already received acclaim from industry insiders. As an artist, Mike has had several defining moments in his career. Booking his first headline performance at The House of Blues Cleveland in May of 2023 and releasing his first single on February 20th, 2023, are two of them. Amidst their recent GRAMMY nomination and multiple festival headlining slots, ODESZA continue to conquer 2023 with the release of “To Be Yours” today, a playful track that sways with major indie pop vibes and showcases the dreamy vocals of Chicago’s buzzy bedroom popstar Claud (the first artist Phoebe Bridgers signed to her record label Saddest Factory Records). The track drop follows two incredible festival performances earlier this month at Okeechobee and CRSSD, the announcement of their headlining slot at this year’s Outside Lands, as well as their other recent release “Hopeful” debuting in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. “To Be Yours was a track that we had originally started back at the end of 2018. We loved the idea but struggled to find the right fit for the song until Claud sent us back their incredible vocal top line,” said ODESZA (Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight). “As soon as we heard what Claud put together we knew we had something special. The vocal melodies and delivery compliment the track in such a perfect way. We couldn’t be happier with how this one came together and are really excited for people to hear it.” Listen below! 16. The amount of times a DJ has dropped “Midnight City” by M83 set is almost incalculable at this point. The track originally appeared on the double album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, released in 2011. According to a quick synopsis of the album’s success, “The album placed 3rd in Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2011 list; the single ‘Midnight City’ was placed 1st on the Top 100 Tracks list. On January 26, 2012, M83 came in at number 5 on the Triple J Hottest 100 with the single ‘Midnight City.'” It was a massive hit in every way possible, and arguably singlehandedly led to M83’s massive popularity. However, Anthony Gonzalez, the remaining sole member of the group, has stated multiple times in interviews that he laments the song’s popularity. In an infamous 2019 interview with VICE, he said, “[…] these days, I kind of just want people to forget about me and my previous success— Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and ‘Midnight City.'” Now, in a more recent interview with Consequence, he has doubled down. “I mentioned this in an interview before, but it’s almost that I want to keep the fans of ‘Midnight City’ away from entering — which I mean mostly as a bad joke,” Gonzalez said. “For me, the struggle with being a successful artist with that album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and especially with that track, ‘Midnight City’, is that all of a sudden, I had this huge EDM following. EDM is probably one of the styles of music that I hate the most. All of a sudden, I have these bro EDM DJs playing my music, and I just can’t even care less. Sometimes I wish that I could erase that fan base but I don’t think it’s possible to do that.” This isn’t something that EDM fans will necessarily take personally, but nonetheless it’s disheartening to hear that the artist behind a song that popularly shows up in hundreds of sets per year has maligned an entire fanbase wholesale. The interview comes ahead of M83’s ninth studio album, Fantasy, due out this Friday, March 17. You can read the full interview here. 22. In the real world, Modapit has seemingly come out of nowhere, presenting a parallel between his real-life aspect and the character he portrays in the media surrounding his music. Questions of being an industry plant are unavoidable, but if the music is good, the point becomes rather moot. Modapit released their first single, “Dancing,” in January, and followed it up recently with “Falling In Love” along with yet another music video. The idea behind the project is to present a cohesive and interesting story that asks as many questions as it answers, and so far, that goal hasn’t been missed. With the release of the music video for “Falling In Love” last week, we caught up with the video’s director, David Guillermo Borges, to ask about the creative direction and actual process of filming the video — how it came together, the challenges they faced shooting in the desert, and what the future holds for Modapit. In addition to Borges’ involvement, the video also features an impressive cast and crew, including choreographer and performer Tiffany “Violet” De Alba who has worked with Cirque Du Soleil, Diddy, and Usher, as well as Russel M. Corpis, Kendra Hagan, Dantriell Houston, Stephanie Brodie, and Bohdan Tkachenko. When the Modapit team first sent you the song, what was the first concept in your mind as to how you would set the setting for the video? The song was sent very early in the process, at the same time Dancing was sent. (And a few others.) The goal was to create a single story line but still have music videos that felt very different from each other. We immediately knew we wanted to shoot in a desert setting to create a drastic change from ‘Dancing,’ which takes place in the city. All these things together added to the first few ideas. How many different versions of the video did you draft before you settled on the final concept? I wouldn’t say different versions of the video, but a couple different things changed as we started producing it. One of the things was the wardrobe and make up. At first we thought about buying things we felt these characters would wear, but Gabriella, our protagonist, and producer said she’d be happy to create the costumes herself. Best decision we could have made, she hand made every single costume and chose the color red to represent love. Another thing I’d say changed was the story line and where in the video certain things happened, making the final project even more fascinating to watch than our first cut. Clearly the being in the sky is meant to represent Modapit — who do the dancers represent? The motorcyclist? In our story so far we know Modapit has something to do with the “spaceships”. The motorcyclist is the main character for our previous video Dancing, she’s been on a quest of finding the “real” Modapit, who she believes has answers about what happened to her sister. She has brought the mask of someone that was probably an impostor to this group of almost a religious cult in hopes of being accepted into this place floating in the sky. I believe the dancers represent our connection to artists. The motorcyclist would represent us trying to become a part of the music scene. Modapit would represent a different kind of artist, one that I believe is not after fame or fortune but more about getting people together. What was the shooting process like out in the desert as far as working around weather and lighting? The weather in Vegas was incredible when we landed, but a couple days before the shoot it started to get really cold and wet. We had about 15 people booked for this, a scary feeling thinking you’d have to reschedule. But somehow like the beam of light shining out of the modaship, the sky opened up that morning for a few hours allowing us to film the dance part of the video, only to get impossibly cold that afternoon. Call it luck, or a blessing but I believe this video was supposed to happen that day. I do love Vegas and can’t wait to come back in May for Moda’s first performance. Is this story over? The story is not over, we have yet to really meet the sister of our main character, who was teased in the What is Modapit trailer. We also want to show people what it would look like if our main character met the real Modapit and got answers about her sister. This article was first published on Your EDM. 23. As a genre, dubstep is no longer as critically maligned as it once was in the early 2010s. You can find influences in major pop songs and there are entire festivals, stage takeovers, and stadium tours featuring the now iconic sound. Of course, the sound has changed over the past decade. The slow, methodical burning of bass and drums that began the wave in the late 2000s has been replaced with quarter notes, heavily distorted bass, and, sometimes, pretty unimaginative design. There are still those who represent the old guard, namely, in this case, Emalkay, The Others, and Subscape. Each of them have been a part of the scene, creating waves, for the past 15 or more years. Only recently did they all come together on their first single, “Inside My Head.” “We thought it was a collaboration long overdue so we mashed out some beats together one day and before we knew it we eventually ended up with a huge body of work with this being one of our favourite tracks. We are thrilled to finally have it out there and on the legendary Deadbeats label too! We hope you enjoy it.’ – Emalkay Now, their complete Flashpoint EP is officially out via Deadbeats, featuring 8 tracks of legendary bass. It transports us back to the olde days, when the scene wasn’t quite as saturated, when innovation and new discoveries in design and arrangement were being made seemingly every month, and we all knew that 140 was the true BPM. Based in Nashville, they’re become the greenest event in the USA, continually going beyond net zero and producing carbon negative festivals these past two years and will do so again this year. They’ve announced their return to the Music City for their 5th iteration on August 18-19 with a massive lineup that represents as co-founder Blake Atchison shares, “a global dance music sound.” Headlined by SG Lewis, Gorgon City, and What So Not, they’re joined by an impressive genre bending list of artists including Eli & Fur, Inzo, KHIVA, Kream, Saka, Coco & Breezy + many more. We have artists from six continents which really fires me up. Growing up in Nashville, it’s a bit surreal to host this level of cultural diversity in a city that is still primarily known for country music. I’m particularly excited for Major League DJz, Gorgon City, SG Lewis, Sonny Fodera, DJ Minx, Coco & Breezy, Lunice, and What So Not along with local legends Subrinse and Lux Velour.” – Blake Atchison (co-founder of Deep Tropics) Deep Tropics will once again create an entire program of pre-parties, day-time events, workshops and opportunities to connect in intimate settings throughout the weekend. Additionally, multiple off-site afterparty options catering to different musical subgenres will occur simultaneously following the main event to carry deep into the night. Whether you’re in Nashville or beyond, Deep Tropics is a must-attend festival for this year. Tickets go on sale Friday March 17 here. This article was first published on Your EDM.
