In September 2019, Noisia aka Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen, and Thijs de Vlieger announced that the group would split at the end of 2020; the final chapter in a hugely successful 20 year career that saw Noisia break new ground for drum & bass, and become one of the most respected outfits in electronic music. Faced with no festivals in 2020, Noisia decided they’d release a live version of their ‘Outer Edges’ AV show, the touring show which surrounded the release of the ‘Outer Edges’ album. Available late 2020, the ‘Outer Edges Live’ release featured their blistering 25 track live set, accompanying the album was the film of their Outer Edges Live show at Roskilde 2017; the sixty minute film captured one of the most impressive AV shows in contemporary electronic music. Despite ninja-levels of farewell planning at Noisia HQ, covid-19 has continued to disrupt global touring, the knock-on effect for Noisia fans being that many festival shows weren’t able to happen, and some countries couldn’t see the band tour there at all. With all this in mind, Nik, Martijn, and Thijs, have now announced a run of special summer 2022 festival performances, allowing the electronic music legends to honour the cancellations over the last 12 months. There are a handful of opportunities to see them, and it’ll be fields, tents, or arenas only. “Hello festival person! Since 2019 we’ve been planning our farewell tour. AREA21, the collaborative project between Martin Garrix and Maejor that began in 2016 with the surprise breakout hit “Spaceship,” is finally gearing up to release its debut album next Friday. Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is… a bit of an oddly titled album, given that it’s composed entirely of newly released singles in 2021 plus six unreleased singles. None of the project’s supposed “greatest hits” like “Spaceship,” “Glad You Came,” or “We Did It” are on the album. But, oh well, I guess? It’s been seven years since Alison Wonderland last released a solo original under her Whyte Fang alias, but she’s back today with “TIDES,” a brief but thundering 105-second instrumental. Waiting this long, or paying attention to all the hype around a new Whyte Fang single and then going on Spotify and seeing “1:45” for the duration definitely felt like a bit of a letdown at first. But after listening to the single, and hearing no wasted space, it’s a bit refreshing, as well. Objectively the Whyte Fang project has to be differentiated from her main Alison Wonderland project, so expecting more of the same with a different flavor isn’t the proper approach. Said another way, if you went in liking vanilla ice cream and expected French vanilla, but instead got Cajun shrimp, you might be taken aback. But we also like Cajun shrimp. Alison Wonderland fans know of her side project, Whyte Fang — but based on the account’s 214 monthly listeners on Spotify, it’s unlikely that many others do. That will change tomorrow as the project is poised to release its first solo original ever, “Tides.” Whyte Fang showed up in 2012 on the Reign (Remixes) EP from Elizabeth Rose with a remix of “Ready,” and again in 2013, featuring on a Lancelot track, “Thinking Of You.” (There are some other originals on her SoundCloud.) With seven years between releases, plus an entire Alison Wonderland project that’s spanned almost a decade, it’s hard to tell what kind of vibe we’ll be getting with the new single. It was a celebration for the ages as EDC made its triumphant return to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway after almost two-and-a-half years. There were many milestones to be celebrated, aside from the return of the event itself. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Electric Daisy Carnival, and the 10th anniversary of the festival’s move to Vegas. Not only did Insomniac deliver as per usual with grandiose production, immaculate planning, and a totally stacked lineup. They also made the Speedway feel as comfortable and familiar as it’s ever been, more than any other year, I felt like I was home at EDC. Although this year’s EDC was a milestone one, and Insomniac managed to expand the festival footprint even more, this year’s festival felt very much like comfort food to me. If you’ve been to the festival, you know what I’m talking about. It’s literally just a warm fuzzy feeling as you traverse the Speedway, a million LED lights lighting up the night sky. If you haven’t been before, it’s tough to describe the sense of wonder one feels at EDC. More than any other festival you will attend, EDC is an immersive world that is spellbinding. But, if you didn’t make it, we’ll try our best to let you know what you missed out on. My friends and I left the Strip early enough on Friday evening. There was traffic, which was to be expected, but, overall, getting into Premier Parking was relatively easy. We ended up walking in the gates around 9 PM, just in time to head over to Kinetic Field to catch Nicky Romero’s set. Kinetic Field is, of course, the main stage, and it’s design and theme change every year. This year’s theme was kineticZen. The stage featured a massive owl at the center of the stage, it’s wings wrapped in a circle around the main LED display. It was the first time the owl took center (literally) stage since 2015’s The Crystal Village, which also featured a massive owl head, whose eyes gazed all across the dancefloor. The pyro and lasers were exceptional this year, the fountains added a nice touch too. One of EDC’s most amazing features is always the nightly fireworks show. After more than two years away, Day 1’s fireworks were a sight for sore eyes. I caught the show on the dancefloor of Kinetic Field and it was truly awe-inspiring to see the spectacle play out across the electric sky. But, that wasn’t all, if you were at Kinetic Field you were also treated to a very special drone show. Drones made formations of the EDC logo along with a 25 year commemoration. Most impressively the drones formed the shape of the owl that adorns the stage. It was really impressive and a memory that will certainly stick with me. As far as the music, it was an all-star lineup at Kinetic Field where I spent most of the night. Nicky Romero dropped his festival-ready progressive house as well as classic EDM anthems like “I Could Be the One” and “Toulouse.” I couldn’t think of a better way to open up the weekend. Loud Luxury followed with a delightful set that saw them drop an impressive array or edits of some of today’s biggest hits. Don Diablo was up next and he kept the positive vibe going with a healthy mix of house bangers and his trademark future house sound including rousing drops of “Momentum” and “Anthem.” After that, my most anticipated act of the night, the Chainsmokers took the stage. Alex and Drew brought all the energy with them as they dropped all of their hits and dabbled in every genre of dance from house to psy-trance. I was singing my heart out on songs like “Takeaway”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, and “Paris.” But, on top of that, they closed their set out with their first new song since 2019. It was a vibey one too, but, new Chainsmokers was a highlight for sure. After that, Alesso took the stage, and he threw the kitchen sink at the crowd. He threw down some newer house jams like “Together”, “Progresso” and Swedish House Mafia’s “It Gets Better” before getting into his big festival classics like “Under Control” and “Calling (Lose My Mind)”. After that, we made a brief jaunt to Circuit Grounds to check out some of Excision’s set. The vibe was completely different from stage to stage. Despite how large EDC is, it’s kind of the perfect festival to dig in and plant yourself at one stage for the majority of the night. Whatever your vibe is, find it. On to Day 2, which still featured magical performances, but also featured a few hiccups that have to be addressed. My friends and I headed out early in the afternoon in hopes of catching some of the Opening Ceremony at Cosmic Meadow. Despite having premiere parking and arriving around 6:15, we were waiting in the line with many other patrons until the gates opened at 7 PM. What happened? How come there weren’t any signs directing patrons to the proper entrance? Everyone clearly came early for a reason, I’m just confused as to how people who arrived early weren’t directed to the proper entrance for the Opening Ceremony. Definitely a snafu on Insomniac’s part. Once inside, I spent most of the night at Circuit Grounds. The stage design was pretty much the same as it’s been in years past. Massive rectangular LEDs surrounding the dancefloor in a 360 degree square. Circuit Grounds is my personal favorite stage because it features main stage talent bringing their own personalized visuals in a slightly more intimate environment. Future bass was in full effect as ARMNHMR were the first act I caught. It was a nice mix of feels and heavy to start the night off right. After that, Benny Benassi took over, and this is where the lineup is just packed to the brim. The legendary Italian house DJ played to a packed crowd that ate up his vintage tech house hits and a few festival bangers, including the Skrillex remix of “Cinema.” Oliver Heldens was up next, and he dropped all of his bangers. From old school hits like “Koala”, “The Right Song” and “You Know” to newer bangers like “Turn Me On” and his remix of “Another Chance”, Oliver energized the crowd all while maintaining that signature Oliver Heldens sound. This set was a delight. After that, Slander took the stage, and there were equal parts head banging and crying. The crowd was super energetic, my neck was sore, and I didn’t even go that hard. Favorite moments had to be when they dropped “Feeling Good” and “Love is Gone.” After that, it was time for Martin Garrix. It’s been a long time since the Dutch megastar has graced the stage here in the U.S. and he brought it all, including at least a couple of new IDs. But, like the festival itself, Martin played his greatest hits. He did open his set with what appeared to be a new ID with John Martin. After that, it was all of Martin’s bangers, “Like I Do”, “Backlash”, “Virus”, “Mistaken.” He also brought out Maejor for an AREA21 medley, too. On top of that, the stage production was just at another level. Lasers firing everywhere, smoke filling the arena, every color you can imagine. Remember how I said the fireworks were awe-inspiring on Friday night? They were still great on Saturday, but this time, I watched them while waiting in line for the bathroom at Circuit Grounds. This one isn’t necessarily Insomniac’s fault, but they were having some plumbing issues at the VIP bathrooms at Circuit Grounds, and it wasn’t very VIP. The men’s lines weren’t nearly as long as the women’s, but it was wet waiting in line, and it was kind of stinky at Circuit Grounds VIP. Again, not necessarily Insomniac’s fault, but it was definitely an issue. Anyway, smells aside, deadmau5 played the Circuit Grounds stage next, and he threw down a set for the ages. He threw down all of his old school hits like “Ghosts N Stuff”, “4×4=12”, and “Strobe” and his newer stuff like “When the Summer Dies”, “Monophobia” and “Bridged by a Lightwave.” On top of that, Joel was in a mood; when he ended his set, he introduced Jauz as DJ Steve, and he ranted about how they went to DJ school together. Jauz, ever the good spirit, went right along with it and introduced himself as DJ Steve (he’s Sam) to the crowd. From there, Jauz threw down a fiery bass house set, that once again saw all of the visual spectacle of Circuit Grounds come to life. After that, I headed back over to Kinetic Field for KSHMR. Similar to deadmau5, KSHMR dug deep into his catalog of songs for classics like “Neverland”, “Wildcard”, and “Karate” to newer hits like “Winner’s Anthem” and “Midnight Lion Walk.” He also payed homage to his roots with the Cataracts by playing the 2010 classic “Like a G6.” After two loaded days, we fell back on Sunday night, and got there about 9:00 with nowhere in particular to go. The perfect opportunity to explore the festival. This year, I did something I’ve never done at EDC before, catch full sets at Basspod and Wasteland. We opened the night catching Joyryde’s “All D’n’B Set” at Basspod. Once again, I was struck by how different the vibe and crowd was at Basspod compared to Kinetic Field. It’s night and day, and if your heart desires, you can stay at Basspod all weekend and have a great time. Joyryde’s D’n’B vibes were the perfect way to kick off the final night of the weekend. We caught a little bit of Purple Disco Machine at Kinetic (and it was a vibe!) before heading over to Wasteland for Da Tweekaz. Once again, I’d never caught a full set at Wasteland, but it was well worth it to check it out. Da Tweekaz threw down a killer set, the crowd was fully engaged and, like Basspod, the sound hits at Wasteland. After that, I headed over to Circuit Grounds for Eric Prydz. He might have had the set of the weekend, incredible progressive house tunes, EDM classics, incredible visuals, lasers, fireworks; everything EDC is about. Eric dropped “Pjanoo”, “The Arrival” “Rebel XX” “Everyday” and “Opus.” Combined with the world class visuals and lighters, this was an unsurpassed set. Also, “Opus” is the perfect song for fireworks too. From there I made my way to Cosmic Meadow for my first set of the weekend there, Zedd. I never thought I would be writing this, but, the crowd for Zedd was rowdy as fuck! It was packed to the brim at Cosmic Meadow as Zedd threw down an epic, but familiar set of hits like “I Want You to Know”, “Beautiful Now”, “Clarity” and his edit of “One More Time.” Zedd also mixed in some house tracks, and, oh yeah, he brought out Martin Garrix and they dropped “Tremor.” What a dream come true, now they just need to make a song together. There’s not too much more I can say about the festival. It was a truly magical weekend; being back at the Speedway was a special feeling. On another note of normalcy, EDC will be returning to its regularly scheduled weekend in May of 2022. It took longer than normal, but, it was another incredible weekend under the electric sky. Lights All Night just dropped the full music lineup for its 11th edition and it’s a doozy. The longest-running EDM festival in Texas returns to Dallas on December 30 and 31 with a limited number of two-day and single-day tickets are available for purchase at LightsAllNight.com. After a sold-out 10th anniversary celebration in 2019, LAN will make its triumphant return this December featuring performances from the world’s most sought-after dance and electronic music acts. 40,000+ guests from across the globe are expected to attend the two-day event, which will return for a sixth year to Dallas Market Hall located just minutes from downtown Dallas. Following the success of the Blade Runner 2049 film from 2017, Adult Swim has released an animated series called Blade Runner: Black Lotus that merges the established Blade Runner universe with a more anime-style presentation. Few artists can trend on Twitter for simply announcing a single show, but that’s what Skrillex did last week before his grand return to New York City at Avant Gardner, his first set in the state in four years. It’s been a long four years for Skrillex fans, bombarded with promises (or, rather, rumors) of an album, year after year after year. Not to mention plenty of releases that spanned various genres, many of them outside what was considered the artist’s “typical” style. Nonetheless, it’s widely known that his live sets still go absolutely off, and that seems to be the consensus about last week’s show at Avant Gardner. Florian Picasso & Martin Garrix’s GRX have joined forces again, and today they bring ‘Far Away’ into the world. The fresh, uplifting track marks the first output from Martin Garrix’s GRX alias since the release of ‘Restart Your Heart’ last year, which also featured Picasso. ‘Far Away’ marks the beginning of a new story for Picasso who announced the coming of his brand new Héritage EP this week. The release date of the full project is still a secret at this point, but the spectacular trailer video and first music video give a hint of what’s to come. The story-based music video of ‘Far Away’, directed and written by Loïc Schütz, cinematically portrays Picasso wandering through the desert without any sign of life, far away from his world. Another day, another Deadmau5 collaboration that we are obsessed with! The latest by Deadmau5 is a single shared with indie pop band, Foster The People, and it will seriously make you feel things. Between the haunting vocals and rippling, progressive soundscape, “Hyperlandia” establishes itself as a unique release, perfect for a late night drive or bedtime lullaby. Foster The People frontman, Mark Foster, adds his unmistakable vocals and a touch of sorrow to the production. Give me your best night. We’re only here for a day, so tell me your name And just melt into my arms while we disappear in the darkness. When combined with the twinkling synth melodies and progressive bassline, the effect is bittersweet. Deadmau5 is no stranger to collaboration, having worked frequently with artists like Lights and Wolfgang Gartner. The single is not Foster The People’s first appearance on an electronic record, either. The band also worked with Louis the Child on the March 2020 hit, “Every Color,” and Mark Foster made a solo appearance on Madeon’s 2015 album with “Nonsense.” The single is available as a radio edit and in the original vocal version, which adds two minutes of bonus dreamy beats. Jason Wann isn’t exactly a new artist, especially around his hometown of Portland where he’s been creating interesting, synth-based music under a number of monikers and is active as a DJ in the local scene. Clearly well-versed in the ways of the synths, Wann’s work is heady, emotive and laced with classic 80s dancefloor style. His latest project, Sines, was invented specifically to marry his synth-heavy house and techno style with female vocals and blur the lines between EDM and pop. With his new album A Series of Moments, released earlier this month, he’s done just that. Presumably named after the sine wave synth work that is prolific throughout all his releases, Wann’s new Sines project started in January last year with a self-titled debut LP and followed up quickly with another album, Dancing in Place, in May of the same year. With lashings of Kaskade, ODESZA and fellow Portlanders Washed Out, Sines and Dancing… had tight, clean sound design and more than a little throwback cachet in both the synths and the vox. Conjuring images of Madonna dancing in Desperately Seeking Susan and basically the whole soundtrack of The Breakfast Club, Wann as Sines declared his intention to bring the new new wave in dance music. The inspiration for this record came from my experiences dancing in nightclubs in my early youth and the magic I feel when I hear a kick ass dance record. I wanted to make a record inspired by those sweaty hedonistic nights and something that was classic in a way…I wanted to write something insanely catchy like a pop song but that also came from a culture of dance music and that paid respect to proper dance music going all the way back to disco. Mission accomplished, if Wann’s work on Sines so far is anything to go by. Of course both writing dance songs like pop songs and throwback 80s synth vibes aren’t exactly a new concept, but both the level of commitment and the attention to detail are unique to Sines. He dug even deeper for A Series of Moments, pulling from real OG influences like Kraftwerk, Donna Summer and Blondie to really dial in the emotion. with the diverse vocalists on this album, what resulted was an even stronger nod to the emotive, minor key-driven and post punk-tinged sounds of new wave but with updated techniques and more attention to what EDM sounds like now. An excellent blend of new and vintage, pop and electronica with no compromise on sound quality or feeling. Wann began teasing A Series of Moments in June with its lead track, “Something in the Way.” Vox on this one are by Kitty Richardson, who more than understood the assignment, adds even more 80s indie design. Richardson’s operatic, Kate Bush-like vocals make the track so much richer and deeper. Apparently on top of his synth talents, Wann also knows how to pick his female vocalists. Conversely, a vocalist like Emily Coomber has a deeper and more definitively new wave sound to Richardson’s, sounding a bit like Susan Ann Sulley from The Human League. Wann matched her to “Under the Waves,” which may remind other old school indie pop lovers of The Cure’s “Plainsong.” The partnering with multiple vocalists allows Wann to be even more diverse in his composition. From Bellabeth’s bell-clear timbre driving the more modern “Run Underground” to Christina Siravo’s full range funk pairing on “Mr. Ciao” and back to Richardson’s heart-rending performance in album closer “Iva,” the collabs in A Series of Moments bring out the best in both the vocalists and the producer. Artists like Wann who want to keep the sounds of early dance music alive are important, especially as the EDM pop juggernaut goes through its more lackluster phases. With more than 50 years of history, there are scores of influences to pull from now to make something new. Despite his obvious technical prowess, it’s clear that Wann as Sines is more about conjuring those early dancefloor feelings than anything, and by teaming up with the varied and talented vocalists, he’s shown through A Series of Moments just how strong that feeling can be. Avicii announced his retirement from touring and music in March 2016 (though he eventually returned in 2017 for his final EP before his death, AVĪCI (01) ), but it wasn’t until August in 2016 that he played his final live performance at Ushuaïa in Ibiza.
