KC Lights & Lapsley Team Up For Glimmering Summer Anthem, “Better Times” [TOOLROOM]
KC Lights is undoubtedly one of the most exciting artists of today, possessing creative ingenuity and brilliance that is rare to find. He’s seems to have the Midas touch, and his latest single, “Better Times,” is no exception to the greatness we’ve come to expect from him. Featuring the dazzling vocals of indie sensation Lapsley, the two make a dynamic team, whipping together a true summer anthem with sun kissed melodies and glimmering vibes all the way through. “Better Times” emanates with vibes of happy days, roller skating and dancing with a nimble touch of 70s/80’s disco, funk, and soul but with enough of an edge that you still know its 2023. KC Lights is masterful with his ability to blend these feelings with his recognizable signature sound. While the song acknowledges the essence of the past, it is also crafted to fit the present by becoming a modern, irresistible uplifting tune. Even better, industry heavyweights such as BBC Radio One’s Danny Howard, KISS, Capital Dance, and Apple’s DanceXL have all given “Better Times” their stamp of approval. “The idea for ‘Better Times’ manifested while I was on the train to London to meet Lapsley for a writing session. I wanted a sound that felt warm and familiar but also new and exciting. Almost immediately, Lapsley & I knew that we had a creative connection. A few hours later, we had written the track. We just knew the nostalgic vibe and sound felt so right. For me, ‘Better Times’ is about letting go of anything weighing you down in life and looking ahead optimistically. Looking ahead into summer, I think this song will be a big moment in my sets.” – KC Lights Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. St. Mary & GRAIL Join Forces For Enchanting New Song “RELIGION”
One of electronic music’s hottest rising talents St. Mary has teamed up with GRAIL for their first release of the new year, “RELIGION” out on Lowly. LA-based producer St. Mary hails from the small island country of Cyprus. She has quickly become one electronic music’s most innovative new producers. Her new release “RELIGION” with GRAIL uses soft piano keys to paint a serene soundscape as the record commences. Beautifully distorted vocal synth work acts as a call to action as RELIGION progresses. The buildup is filled with euphoric and anthemic elements as the record plays on. The global sound and exquisite production in “RELIGION” surely defines St. Mary and GRAIL’s place within electronic music. Read more about what ST. MARY had to say about creating “RELIGION”: “Our aim with the record’ was to implement a euphoric element to the high-energy festival music that we both love playing live. We wanted to bring a harder edge to it by introducing a hardwave twist to the overall sonic palette of this track. The more it progresses, the more melodically-driven it becomes. Leading up to the final drop, all the tension gets released into a fully evolved hardwave section, making it my favorite part of the song.” Listen to “RELIGION” by St. Mary and GRAIL below. Detroit Techno Maestro Henry Brooks: Staying True to the Underground [INTERVIEW]
The notoriously visceral and otherworldly DJ/producer known as Henry Brooks is on fire right now and destined to make his mark on techno as we know it, while staying true to the underground. Hot off two emotive sets over Movement weekend in Detroit, Brooks is practicing endurance, staying focused and grounded while traveling internationally and pursuing his passions. It’s a balancing act, “penning a new blueprint for dark dancefloors everywhere,” while playing shows, making original music, and managing his own event series, Anatomy. As for his distinct sound, Brooks “draws inspirational firepower from the classic, dizzying elixirs of techno elite like Jeff Mills, as well as many modern techno artists — all the while staying true to his own unique authentic expression as an artist, which translates to each original release and club set.” Every time we experience a set from Henry Brooks, his sound evolves and shapeshifts, leaving us breathless and inspired. His Movement 2023 set at the Underground Stage was no exception, as he busted out two hours of brutal rhythms with dark undertones contrasted by his playful demeanor behind the decks. The hypnotic and sophisticated side of Brooks we heard after hours earlier in the weekend shifted into his signature; driving, high-intensity techno to open the final day of the festival properly. We were grateful to catch up with Henry Brooks on this very special occasion and hope you enjoy hearing what’s going on in his world. After playing in so many new places around the world, how does it feel to be back in Detroit this weekend? It feels great to be back in Detroit for Movement! Coming back from Europe, I definitely feel more accomplished as an artist. I’ve reached a goal of mine that I’ve had for years, to travel overseas and play over there – and I’ve done that. I feel inspired after being exposed to different scenes and then coming back to America and wanting to build things in certain ways or different ways in Detroit. It definitely changed me as a person and as an artist. I’m feeling very inspired, also musically. Watching other DJs play in Berlin got me to reflect more on how I can evolve myself as a DJ and producer. I’m able to understand different crowds better and have learned how to navigate different styles; matching what the crowd is resonating with, but while also staying true to what I want to play myself. Last year you played Movement’s Detroit Stage and now you’re back at the Underground Stage, full force! What are some shining moments from the past year? This past year has been about elevating my career and being able to do this almost full time now. What has changed the most since I played Movement last year is being able to travel more and getting more and more gigs. I signed to an agency after Movement, released two other tracks, worked a lot on production and have some more tracks coming out soon as well. How did your Movement 2023 sets go — the testpilot afterparty and your proper set in the Underground? Both of my sets during Movement weekend were amazing! They were both quite different from each other as I had to cater to each event I was playing. Saturday I opened for testpilot, so I dialed things back a little and played more hypnotic and groovy. Monday at the festival I put the pedal to the metal and was able to go all out, setting the pace for the rest of the day at the Underground Stage. It was an amazing weekend overall. Do you remember what your first Movement was like? Yeah, my first Movement was in 2016 and it was a life-changing experience for me. I was still fairly new to the scene and I was able to absorb the different sounds and styles that were present at the festival back then – and overall broaden my horizons with various styles of house and techno. When did you first fall in love with techno — was it at Movement? Yeah, I officially began to fall in love with techno itself at Movement. Before then I was definitely more of a house head, but once I went to Movement and was exposed to more techno the genre started to grow on me. When I started out DJing, which was only just a couple of months after my first Movement, I was mainly playing house & tech house. However over the years, I started playing more and more techno, until I reached the point where I decided I only wanted to play techno. It was a natural progression. You’re a natural, so passionate and dedicated to your craft. What keeps you laser-focused like that? What keeps me focused is simply holding on to how much I love this music and love expressing through the tracks that I like to play, striving to tell a story in every set. It’s just a great form of expression for me. What inspires you to create your best work? What inspires me to create my best work is that I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so I’m always trying to better myself and do better than the last thing I did. I’m also trying to add my own stamp on techno and my own style and taste as a producer into the genre so I can build a collection of music that is uniquely me. What are some of the challenges you face as a DJ/producer? I think one of the hardest challenges is trying to find the balance of being both a DJ and producer. Being able to make enough tracks while still staying on top of my DJ career and traveling, because it definitely takes a lot of energy out of you. On the DJing side of things, it’s about staying on top of current music. I never try to play the same set twice, ever – so I’m always constantly finding new music. Managing all of that while still trying to manage my personal life as well and find the right balance. How much unreleased music do you have right now and can you describe it? Right now I have about three tracks fully finished that are unreleased. Most of the tracks I’m making currently are more on the textural, percussive, and hard tool side of techno. I’m trying to broaden my horizons instead of just making the harder techno that’s more based around heavy melodies. I’m finding new ways to push my sound design. Finding a balance between hypnotic elements while still keeping things hard and industrial. What’s the current state of your Anatomy series and the future of it? Anatomy is doing well. It’s been a bit of a challenge at times managing my DJ and producer career and on top of that booking artists and throwing events. But yeah, I’m definitely going to keep that going. I want to build the scene in Detroit and bring artists who haven’t ever been here or haven’t played here much. I’d like to bring through different styles of techno that are not played in Detroit as much year-round. So, yeah, definitely more events coming – I have a very exciting one coming up in July! Do you plan on taking Anatomy to other cities? Yes! I plan on taking Anatomy to other cities and building my brand in other places for sure. That’s definitely a goal of mine. Right now, I want to keep it mainly based in Detroit, but do have some ideas outside of the city as well, which will be coming soon. What was your experience like playing overseas, including the legendary techno nightclub Tresor Berlin? Playing overseas was incredible. It was great to see what the scene was like over in Europe and how events happen over there, the different crowds and being able to be a part of those parties. Playing at Tresor Berlin was insane as well. It’s like a very dark, grungy basement with just a few strobes and some fog. The current venue has been around since 2007 and before then, the original location started in the early ’90s. So in total, it’s the longest-running techno club in the world and it was an honor to play there. You’re checking off so many accomplishments that DJs aspire to do – like your HÖR set, which was brutal by the way! What was it like prepping for that set, knowing it would be seen and heard live around the world? Prepping for that set was a bit stressful, but I also didn’t want to overthink it. I grabbed some of my best tracks and some new tracks that I really liked, and put together a playlist of different energy levels and vibes as I always do. I picked the first two tracks I was going to play ahead of time – and other than that, the rest was all impromptu and on the fly. That’s very interesting when you have no crowd to read — and it’s not just a mix, it’s a performance! Yeah, you’re completely on your own. It was a small room with just a mixer, some CDJs and two small speakers. It was a little nerve-wracking at first, however I’ve done similar live streams before and after the first three or four tracks, I got fully locked into my groove and was just able to mix. Flash-forward a few weeks later to Charlotte De Witte KNTXT’s takeover in New York City. What was it like playing that show? Playing opening sets for bigger events can sometimes be hit or miss in terms of if people come early or not, however this one was amazing. It was a great crowd early on and within the first 30 minutes it was already starting to fill up really quick. Also, playing b2b with Hiroko Yamamura was a great experience. We meshed very well with our different sounds and styles. We ended up getting an extra 30 minutes to play as well. Do you have any dreams or aspirations you’d like to speak into existence? Some dreams and aspirations I have now are simply to play more across Europe until I’m at the point where I can go back and forth overseas on a regular basis. Also to play more around the world, Asia and Australia would be fun places to visit. Overall to keep broadening my scope of where I’m playing while coming back to North and South America to continue growing my fan base here. I’d also love play some major festivals like Awakenings, but continue to stay true to more intimate style underground clubs and still play a bunch of those. I don’t want to get to the point where I’m so big I’m only playing massive festivals, because I don’t want to lose the intimacy of smaller events. What does it mean to you to be representing Detroit techno right now? It feels great to represent Detroit techno and be a part of the next generation that’s pushing this genre and style. I want to keep pushing my sound and the style to new areas and always innovate – always adding more to the genre. Pendulum talk past, present, and future in new documentary, “The New Era”
Pendulum was among the first electronic artists I listened to way back in high school. I started with “Blood Sugar” and “Painkiller” (which I later learned after saying goodbye to Limewire wasn’t even their original, they were just a feature) and then of course discovering their 2005 Essential Mix, Hold Your Colour, In Silico, and eventually seeing their final headline show in Los Angeles at The Wiltern in 2011. The group was a starting point and a pillar of my electronic upbringing and I was even fortunate enough to have drummer KJ Sawka as a roommate for a few years and get a firsthand look at the studio set up and learn more about the history of the group. All this to say that Pendulum is in my blood and I, and hundreds of thousands of others, have been waiting patiently for their official return. They came back tentatively at Ultra Music Festival in 2017 as they headlined the festival with guest appearances from deadmau5 and Tom Morello, but you could say they didn’t truly return until their Elemental EP in 2021. By all metrics, they are officially back. Following the release of their newest single “Halo,” with Bullet For My Valentine, last Friday, the group has released an official documentary chronicling the end of the first era of Pendulum, the rise of Knife Party, the return of Pendulum at Ultra, and what the future holds. “Halo” could be the first sign of a new album from the group, or another EP. We don’t really know; famously the group, and frontman Rob Swire, are pretty tight-lipped about their future plans. But from the footage, it looks like the group, under new management and with renewed vigor, the group is in it for the long haul once again. GRiZ has been putting in the work and honing his craft for over a decade. From performing with Big Gigantic and Gramatik, headlining festivals and his own bespoke events, playing alongside Pretty Lights, the world has seen him own his identity and provide a safe place for all to express themselves freely and proudly. Sadly, in some ways, GRiZ has announced that after October this year he is going to take an indefinite hiatus from touring and the project. “Life is really good, and often I make myself too busy to see just where I am and how far this project has come,” he wrote on social media. “I’m following my gut instincts so for now, I’m not going to put a hard time limit on the break.” Many of his usual annual shows in this case won’t be taking place — GRiZMAS, Space Camp, and NYE in particular. There’s still one final curated GRiZ show to-be-announced for later this year and details for that are dropping this week. Read his full statement below. Sak Noel’s Single “Trueno” Is a Latin House Heater
There’s an undeniable beauty that comes from fusing latin culture within house music. The groove, instruments, and vocals craft a perfectly unique landscape all while giving a rhythm that can’t help but make your body want to move. One artist who has a penchant for this style of house is Sak Noel. His single “Trueno” is a prime example of latin house greatness, while also accomplishing acclaim without significant promotion. Renowned artists such as Diplo and Dillon Francis have lent their support to the song, recognizing its unique appeal. It has also inspired countless individuals to create their own choreographies and dances, fueling a global dance trend. I did not expect “Trueno” to have this massive support, especially from such big names. I produced this record out of pure joy, not thinking at all about the result and enjoying the process as much as I could. I produced it for me. I guess that is the way but we keep forgetting in this industry. – Sak Noel Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Sak Noel’s Single “Trueno” Is a Latin House Heater

Nightjarr Unveils Glimmering New Single “Holding Onto Time ft. Jingle”
Nightjarr is a new electro-dance project from female Australian/Hong Kong artist Bernice Au, who has already developed an infectious sound that can be likened to a mix between Flight Facilities, Cosmo’s Midnight & Bag Raiders. Now, she’s back with a glimmering single, a beautiful fusion between lofi and house, titled “Holding Onto Time” featuring the blissful vocals of Jingle. It’s a hazy experience, as Nightjarr masterfully weaves entrancing melodies within a grooving backbeat that only makes you want keep it on repeat by the time you get to the end. This track is about our perception of time and how it can be affected by certain things. It always reminds me to let go of the things that do not serve us, and to enjoy the little things. I started the track right before I had a double ankle surgery in 2021, which meant I couldn’t walk for 6weeks during recovery, so I had a sense of urgency to get the draft done. The track was done in two summer sessions, and I really wanted to capture that carefree, holiday vibe. I had a lot of fun playing around with samples, tweaking subtle elements, constructing the drum and percussive elements to work around the samples and arranging the track. It was originally going to be an instrumental but when Josh (Jingle) heard the track, he wanted to write lyrics and add vocals to it. His lyrics are inspired by the perception of time and how that has been affected by lockdown. How a never-ending experience can, in hindsight, be over in a flash.” ~ Nightjarr Listen below! Fejká Offers Mesmerizing Remix To Thylacine’s Single “Polar”
Since his debut album Transsiberian, Thylacine has developed a taste for composing through travel, an initiatory project that led him to compose during his journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The album that allowed the young prodigy to make a name for himself on the electronic scene and the music world at large. With the aim to combine music and image and make the listener discover his universe through travel, Thylacine has continued to carve out his own path, on his own terms, in his own style, earning legions of dedicated fans and followers along the way. Now, he’s tapped another phenomenal producer Fejká for remix duties on his smash single, “Polar“. It’s a beautiful journey from start to finish, packed with hypnotic progressions, entrancing melodies, and a thumping back beat. It’s an ethereal remix that showcases just how talented Fejká while also paying homage to the original. Here’s what Fejká had to say about it: “I deconstructed the original first and kept the most interesting parts for me: the vocals and a synth melody which appears later in the track. Looping the groovy synth melody gave me a hypnotic feeling, the longer I listened to it the more ideas started to sparkle. With the chord progression coming in later I wanted the atmosphere to slowly shine in, like a whole of sunlight beaming through a wall of clouds, making the hole bigger and bigger. I decided to use it as the base for my intro and build an evolution of atmospheres around it. I used a Moog sub 37 and Juno 60 for the bass and top leads and digital instruments for the atmospheres. Those digital instruments are heavily processed with space echo’s, delays, bitcrushers and reverb.” Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. AUDIA Talks Finding Her Unique Voice, Unreleased Music & Influences Ahead of Movement Debut [INTERVIEW]
Michigan-based music producer, sound designer, and vocalist AUDIA will be hitting the stage at Movement Music Festival in Detroit this weekend — and she’s bringing her expressive, heavy-hitting flair to the stage. AUDIA’s evocative performances are accentuated by her own vocals that dominate many of her tracks, along with a combination of field recordings taken from scrap yards, engines, and other industrial settings. Expect her productions and overall performance to be bold and bassy with hypnotic melodies and emphasis on her love for midtempo. AUDIA’s performance at Movement will mark her first major festival appearance and will be one to watch. Equipped with plenty of unreleased music, remixes, and special edits just for the occasion, AUDIA aims to leave your mind blown! Don’t miss AUDIA’s performance at Movement 2023 this weekend — report to the Detroit Stage on Monday, May 29th from 6-7pm to see her in action. What makes the AUDIA sound so unique? One thing that makes my music unique is my usage of my own vocals in all of my tracks. A person’s voice is an extremely personal and unique instrument and I use mine to its full potential and in many different ways. I often end up processing my own voice and creating interesting sounds from it, which end up in many of the different pieces of my songs. I also like to use field recordings of interactions between metallic objects, heavily processed synths, and like to play keys and sing on my own tracks. Favorite artists and influences at the moment? There are so many awesome artists and producers out there that it is so difficult to name just a few!! But, some of the artists that I constantly find myself returning to would have to be Space Laces, Blanke, REZZ, and Tokyo Machine. I have also been listening to a lot of Clarence Clarity, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and SebastiAn to name a few. What can the crowd expect to hear at your Movement 2023 set? Over the past couple of months I have prepared a lot of remixes, edits and originals for Movement 2023! I wanted to bring a solid set of diverse types of midtempo bass with an AUDIA twist and showcase my original music and bring in some of my own sonic flavor. Movement also inspired me to make some remixes of tracks by some of my favorite artists, such as a special flip of Tokyo Machine’s track PLAY and REZZ’s track, Edge. I also planned a few interesting mash-ups including a track by SOPHIE, but I don’t want to spoil too much! Is AUDIA an accurate representation of yourself or do you get into character before hitting the stage? AUDIA is like a limb of my consciousness; I consider AUDIA to be an extension of myself but not entirely separate. Do you remember your earliest moments as an artist, when you first started making music? What was it like? I remember installing my first DAW, Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS), when I was 14. I dabbled in a few different instruments but having access to a DAW felt the most limitless. It is what I ended up sticking with, along with being a keyboard player and vocalist. I recall enjoying the freedom of being able to create whatever was in my mind and essentially build an immersive world out of sound. Creating electronic music ended up being the one thing that I always went back to and ended up following into an education, and eventually, into performance. What is it like as an artist now? It definitely is fun, but being an artist is also a balancing act. A lot of what is seen onstage is an extremely small part of what it’s actually like. I am only onstage for a small fraction of the time I prepare for the show, and the show is the most visible part of the process. In order to prepare for that show, there are many days leading up to that made up of spending time elsewhere producing music and building sets for shows like this, among other aspects like managing social media. For me, performing is the most final result of what I am actually doing most of the time. Any valuable lessons you’ve learned through music and performance? Performing taught me a lot about trusting myself and my style. I used to have the worst stage fright imaginable. I would be very shaky onstage and practically unable to move, let alone sing. After bettering my own style and workflow as a producer over the past few years, I’ve started to believe in myself and in what I have to say as both a producer and performer. How much unreleased music are you sitting on? Quite a bit! I also wrote a lot of new music in preparation for Movement and I am always writing and recording more. I am excited to get back in the DAW and release some of it this summer. Anything else you want to share? I am absolutely thrilled to be playing Movement 2023 and I am excited to bring some midtempo bass to the stage!! TWO LANES Releases Thrilling Melodic House Single “Movement”
TWO LANES have virtually carved out their own unique lane within electronic music, which is one of many reasons they have over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. Well-respected with the industry end and fan end of electronic music culture, it makes sense that they’ve accomplished everything from support via BBC1, Sirius XM, and Triple J, have completed many extensive tours, all while being supported by well-respected outlets. Now, the talented duo is back with a thrilling single “Movement,” marking the final chapter toward a defining full album release. It’s a darker, melodic house single that is captivating right from the start. Featuring an array of glimmering melodies and soft piano chords, they masterfully weave a hypnotic aura into the track, leaving the listener entirely immersed in the song’s ambiance from start to finish. “Movement’ is part of our live set and we have played it out many times throughout our tour last year. It is always one of our favorite moments when we perform it because some parts offer room for improvisational moments where we can play a synth voice and effects live. These more ”open” and spacial parts then lead into an energetic drop with a gritty sounding arpeggiator. This track is more on the clubby side of things and shows a different sonic spectrum on the album. It is also the last single before our debut album will be out.” – TWO LANES Listen below!
