Top 10 Must-See Sets at Ultra Music Festival

Is it pretentious to have a headline like that? (Short answer: Yes, Long answer: ……still yes) How can we possibly say that we know what the top 10 must-see artists, DJs and bands? Why not make a top 10 list after the festival where you can compare and contrast the different sets? (Don’t worry, we will.) It can be sometimes difficult to articulate feelings of your favorite something that you want to categorize and express yourself. It can be even harder to predict what’s going to be the set that you’re going to be blasting in the car on the way to the gym through the Soundcloud widget on 1001tracklist.com two months from now.
But that’s what makes it fun, right? Tossing our opinions like hats to a ring creates such an excellent environment to placate on seemingly subjective topics. Beyond just saying, “Oh yeah, I like <insert artist name here> too,” the discourse on something like this can lead to a deeper sense of understanding and at the very least an amusing exercise in debate. This list, for example, is going to dive deeper into the music festival experience and compare the festival’s history to the artists picking up the torch and even returning to those iconic stages. It’s a list that’s going through the lineup to determine which artists are going to premiere the must-listen-to tracks that are going to envelope the summer, genre be damned! Also, it should be mentioned that some of these sets may collide into each other or even take place at the same time. Unfortunately that doesn’t take away how “Must-See” these sets are going to be. But hopefully this list will help give guidance and direction as to how you’re going to proceed at this year’s festivities.
So here we go. Here’s the list of the Top 10 Must-See Sets to Catch at Ultra Music Festival.
10. ISOxo

Arguably one of the biggest bass-heavy artists to blow up, ISOxo’s rise to fame and notoriety is meteoric but not surprising. From his collaborations with RL Grime and G Jones to his standout solo work, he has become the genre’s most sought after sound. His set at Ultra Music Festival could most likely be a testing grounds for what his future sets look like in terms of IDs and aesthetics. Keep an eye out for this one.
9.  Dimension

If you’re only into techno, house, or even commercial EDM, Miami is the perfect city to host these kinds of events for its veterans hip in these genres. South Florida has even developed a solid bass music scene through both home red creators and more appearances from touring bass artists. However, not enough Drum and Bass representation exists during Miami Music Week. But this year, there seems to be a bigger push for UMF and MMW to include DnB into their pantheon of genres. Dimension is an excellent place to start as his flexibility and prowess in other genres like psytrance and midtempo are just phenomenal.
8. Adam Beyer and Cirez D (B2B)

TECHNO is BESTNO! Wait…let me explain. Every year that these names appear individually, they swell the capacity at Club Space to the point that up you’re going to experience 3rd degree FOMO. These are two masters of their craft that are going to perform together some of the hottest dark-room tunes you’ll ever hear. But don’t take my word for it. Look up some of their sets in Miami from the past and let Adam Beyer and Cirez D prove it.
7. Dom Dolla and Vintage Culture (B2B)

This set at may not appear as a must-see act at Ultra let alone any festival at first glance. But that’s where I would make a strong argument that no back-to-back set is as perfect a pairing as Dom Dolla and Vintage Culture. First off, they are some of the biggest names in the new class of EDM stars. They have huge crossover appeal between new fans and house heads that few other artists do. If I could guess what we could expect from this set, it would have to be a mashup or transition between Dolla’s “New Gold” remix from Gorillaz and Tame Impala and “You Give Me a Feeling” from V.C. and James Hype. The idea of that sounds like peak Miami Music Week divinity.
6. Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten (B2B)

Legends. Simply put. You can’t say you went to Ultra Music Festival without getting your trance groove on. And what better way to do that than to see legends like Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten. The two have been dominating trance in different ways and have arguably laid the foundation upon which modern trance still takes notes from. They are also super popular with some of the scene’s oldest connections in Miami as these two have been making pitstops in Miami religiously for the last decade and a half. The best part is that this set isn’t even the headlining set that Friday evening! (That honor is for Armin’s solo set).
5. Lil Texas

So…it’s time to talk about this guy. The artist known as Lil Texas is a big deal coming to Ultra Music Festival due to a similar reason as Dimension. Lil Texas made more than just a “splash” onto the EDM landscape with gabber, hardstyle, and happy hardcore. He summoned a monolith tsunami and invaded the ear drums of adrenaline-junkies worldwide. But unfortunately, Miami has never been a major breeding ground for these sounds and genres. But Lil Texas’ showmanship and production style fuse into a captivating performance to hopefully open the city to this aggravated sound. I mean if the Needle Drop can be found at one of his shows, then so should we.
4. Moore Kismet

This kid is so beyond special. Bass music was blessed the moment that Moore Kismet’s beautiful soul and creative function gripped the bass music scene. The moment their songs “You Should Run” and “Rumor”, we all knew we weren’t dealing with your run-of-the-mill, bro-step, basic boo. Kismet’s versatility and production skills are on full display on his debut album Universe. Meanwhile, they’ve developed quite the repertoire as a bass music stage staple. Now let’s see if this performance sets him up as a main stage contender for the festivals to follow.
3. Swedish House Mafia

The big boys are here again and they are not going to mess around. Axwell, Steve Angelo, and Sebastian Ingrosso also have the coveted main stage headlining slot which they’ve wielded in the past with a grasp few musical acts can say they have achieved anywhere. We have witnessed Swedish House Mafia premiere, split, reinvent and reunite on that stage and all across the last two decades. But to those who might say that they’re just going to close out their tour from their recent album-support shows for Paradise Again, bear in mind that Ultra is all about premiering new music. So even if they mix the old school classics with their more recent gems, we can expect to hear potentially new music and possible guest-collaborators. This is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand the essence of dance music.
2. Ida Engberg and Maya Jane Coles (B2B)

HOLY MOLY. What a dream come true for all things dark-room, all things warehouse, all things club. The union of Ida Engberg and Maya Jane Coles as tastemakers and room readers mean that this is going to meet the hype by the time their set clocks in near the end of Day 1. To quote one of the Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 (a program they have each appeared on), their set will be “a kaleidoscope of sound that’s truly underground.”
1. Carl Cox

The icon. If you’re a raver or even a casual EDM fan who passes by the Resistance Tent, this is a rite of passage all must embark on if they want to say they really went to Ultra Music Festival. I had gone for years before finally seeing Carl Cox in 2017 and staying for what I thought was half-an-hour. About two-hours later and several minutes refilling my camelback with water, it dawned upon me how he gets his own stage every year. A raver doesn’t have to like or even understand dance music to understand the effect it has on people until they’ve seen what thousands of dancing bodies look like under the spell of one DJ. You have to pay your respects to the one’s that paved the way for this to happen.

DOBé Releases A Powerful Remix For Grammy Award Winning Song “Baraye”

DOBé has partnered up with a plethora of other artists on a human-rights project that supports the fight against oppression in Iran. Together, they bring ‘The Remixes For The People Of Iran’, on 7Rituals label, with all of the proceeds going to the “Woman, Life, Freedom”, Foundation.
DOBé has taken his production expertise and given powerful song “Baraye,” written and produced by Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour, inspired by the death of Mahsa Amini into a focused and poignant yet anthemic remix.
The original song was released on the 28th of September 2022, ‘Baraye’ led to Hajipour’s arrest the following day. Hajipour was released on bail on 4th October, following a wave of international support and high-profile names sharing Hajpour’s message on their social media accounts and Coldplay playing the track at their Buenos Aires live concert earlier this year. “Baraye“ later went on to win the Grammy Award for the Best Song For Social Change.
DOBé’s remix was created to help support the protest and the message of the unbelievably brave women in Iran and everybody in the world who is fighting for women’s rights and freedom. Listen to “Baraye – DOBé Remix” below.

Rezz releases new goth-inspired single, “Suffer In Silence”

It’s long past Halloween, but new music from Rezz doesn’t obey a timeline or season. The Canadian producer and HypnoVizion label head has released her newest song, “Suffer In Silence,” which she says was inspired by her recent bout of severe insomnia.
“‘Suffer In Silence’ has been a consistent track in my shows over the last year. I made it while experiencing severe insomnia that lasted almost 6 full days. It creeped me out while I was working on it, but I knew I had to finish it to encapsulate that period of time.” – Rezz
Full of suspenseful synth-work á la ’90s-’00s horror flicks and tight, punchy kicks, the song is quintessential minimal Rezz. Listen below.

Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding team up for first time in nearly a decade for new trance collab, “Miracle”

Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding haven’t worked together since his 2014 album, Motion, in which the two created one of his biggest hits, “Outside.” She also featured on his 2012 album, 18 Months, on “I Need Your Love.” Two months ago, the two teased that they were back in the studio together, and today we get the official release of their new song, “Miracle.”
The two go back in time with a straight up trance collaboration, something wholly unexpected from the two of them. Calvin has usually leaned toward poppier production, and even with Love Regenerator, he’s done more techno fare.
“I’ve never done it before. I’ve done the, I’ve done the trancey sounding things before, but I’ve never been this fast. So it feels good,” Calvin told Zane Lowe on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1. “When I started making music, I was 14. When I was 14, It was 1998 and ’98, ’99, 2000, 2001 was for me kind of formative trance and house era. So what I did usually was just take bits from that and put it in a new context. But this time I thought maybe I’ll just try and maybe more recreate something that could be from back then… the only thing that I think makes it not sound like it’s from 1996 is the kick drum, because the kick drum’s pretty banging. It’s more than a 909. Do you know what I mean? It’s like pretty heavy.”

Italian producer Lurayana debuts with experimental electronic gem ‘dear tempo’

Lurayana is the moniker of newcomer, Italian producer Ludovica Nazzaro.
Growing up in a family of musicians,  during lockdown she put apart her older pop demos and started approaching a more experimental sound, creating a world in which she finally felt free to express herself.
Her debut single ‘Dear Tempo‘ combines sampled, hypnotic vocals with a drum’n’bass -tinged production, giving birth to a nocturnal, edgy banger you shouldn’t miss.
Speaking about it, she explains: “This song and my project represent a new beginning. For the first time, I finally started understanding and truly loving myself for who I am, and what I am. I made the decision to distance myself from the standard pop format, in favor of a songwriting style, based off of a few selected sampled words. In the past I was almost obsessed with lyrics and their meaning, to the point it had almost become a paranoia, which was hurting my creativity. There’s room now, it’s liberating. It’s a different way for me to express myself, I’m vulnerable, but it’s sincere“.
She adds: ”’Dear Tempo’ was born during a studio session with a dear friend of mine from Avellino, gima. We were here, in my new city Milan, after quite some time spent experimenting with sounds and melodies. Then the guitar line arrived and the song started to take form. I felt the need to leave room for production, to make my voice a sample, distorted but clear at times, just like I often feel lately. I thank gima for being able to see and understand what I would like to be through my music. This song is a liberating anthem from any emotional chain. It feels so good to see how the strangest thoughts manage to take shape and birth in a song.”
‘Dear Tempo‘ is the first single off of Lurayana’s debut EP, which will be released later this year.

Okeechobee releases statement on death of festival attendee this past weekend

Okeechobee Festival in Florida has released a statement regarding the untimely death of one of its attendees, named Steven Nguyen.
This past weekend, EDM Twitter and people on Reddit begged for clarification from Insomniac, the state of Florida, or Okeechobee regarding the death of Nguyen. “Out of respect to those affected by this tragedy,” the statement reads, “we have refrained from commenting prematurely. We will continue to provide our full support to the authorities, who are determining the cause [of death].”

Birthdayy Partyy drop 3 bass-fueled Skrillex flips on “Oops! All Skrillex Remixes” for their birthday

Skrillex this, Skrillex that… what about Birthdayy Partyy? The Chicago duo and twin brothers Bryan and Jon celebrated their birthday yesterday with a flip of three Skrillex tracks — two from Quest For Fire and a bold choice to remix one of his most iconic remixes for “In For The Kill” by La Roux.
These could have very easily been throwaway remixes, done for shits and giggles, but each of them are indeed certified bangers. “Rumble” gets flipped into a raucous drum & bass beat that perfectly captures the essence of the original with a new time signature and way, way, way more drums, plus some really creative synth work.
“Still Here (with the ones that I came with)” was a huge track seeing Skrillex team up with Porter Robinson for the first time. This could have ended so poorly if taken in the wrong direction, but the vocal chops with the classic bass house sound really just makes sense and again presents a fresh take on the beautiful original that is more geared toward the dance floor.
Finally, the “In For The Kill” remix… famously remixed by not only Skrillex but also by Skream. For Birthdayy Partyy to not just remix the original but Skrillex’s own remix is a bold choice, but as seen in the previous two flips, they clearly have an ear for how to take inspiration and put their own spin on something in a creative and successful fashion. For this entry, they take the original, heavy brostep remix and once again turn to drum & bass for the perfect double time, energy-filled banger.
All of the tracks range from between a minute-and-a-half to a little over two minutes, so they’re definitely meant to be live edits but that doesn’t mean they don’t still hit hard. Happy birthday to Birthdayy Partyy, we definitely feel like partying a bit more now.

Sub Focus announces his third solo album, “EVOLVE,” out May 12

It has been 10 years since Sub Focus released Torus, his sophomore album and last solo album he released. In the time since, Sub Focus has teamed up with Wilkinson for their joint album, Portals, in 2020, as well as plenty of singles, remixes for ACRAZE and Bring Me The Horizon, collaborations with Dimension and Rudimental, and more.
That is to say, he’s kept busy.
Last year, he released a number of singles including “Ready To Fly,” “It’s Time,” and “Off The Ground” which all shared similar art direction. Typically, this is indication of a larger body of work, and as it turns out, that is the case. Sub Focus has announced his third solo album, EVOLVE, will release on May 12.

Skrillex goes big for first major festival performance of the year at Ultra Abu Dhabi [FULL SET]

Skrillex truly hit the ground running in 2023, announcing two albums, releasing a string of singles, dropping both albums 24 hours apart, selling out Madison Square Garden with Fred again.. and Four Tet with 3 days’ notice — he set his intentions and knocked them all out of the park.
But even before all that, Skrillex was announced for a slew of festival appearances. The first of them happened this past weekend for the latest new Ultra Worldwide event in Abu Dhabi, along with ILLENIUM, Calvin Harris, NGHTMRE, and more. For his first major festival performance of the year, we get our first real taste of what a new, modern Skrillex set entails. First off, he’s got tons of new music, so there are a huge amount of originals and edits in his set from this new wave of releases.
That being said, he still throws in a lot of classics like “Agen Wida” with JOYRYDE, “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites,” “Bangarang,” and even some Jack Ü and Dog Blood. Porter Robinson and Yamaha team up for “Po-uta” voicebank for VOCALOID6 & share new demo, “Humansongs”

Porter Robinson has always been a huge fan of Vocaloid music, and we can hear a ton of inspiration for that in his Nurture album in the way he modulates his own voice on many of the songs. Today, in collaboration with Yamaha, Porter has officially released his own voicebank based on the effects he used in Nurture called “Po-uta.”
Starting from March 7, the new voicebank is available for purchase (download only) from the official VOCALOID SHOP. The voicebank is also included in the “Plus Voicebank Set” for VOCALOID6, also available for purchase and download from the official shop.

The newly released “Po-uta” voicebank for VOCALOID6 allows users to enjoy creating vocals from Porter Robinson, authentically reproducing the vocals used in his own songs, which are known for their clarity and exquisite high range. This ensures a striking presence that won’t be eclipsed, even by powerful music. Using VOCALOID’s “Style Presets” feature, users can also choose from thirteen singing style presets, approved by Robinson himself, to automatically adjust the vocal style, tone, and more. This makes it possible to recreate the vocals used in hits like “Shelter” or “Musician” with ease.

Skrillex reveals Gesaffelstein has a new album coming and gives his thoughts

Four years ago, Gesaffelstein released his sophomore album, Hyperion. Compared to his innovative debut album, Aleph, it mostly fell on deaf ears without earning nearly the same degree of notoriety. Though the accompanying tour was successful, if only for nostalgia if nothing else, Hyperion‘s streams are middling — apart from the collaboration with The Weeknd.
There hasn’t really been any rumors surrounding Gesaffelstein this year, at least as far as the general culture has been concerned, so color us all surprised when Skrillex today randomly posted with him and revealed that not only does Gesa have a new album coming, it’s apparently already finished and he’s listened to it. His thoughts were simply, “my gaaawd.”
We can’t wait to hear what this visionary has in store for us this year.

Calvin Harris offers extended preview of “Miracle” with Ellie Goulding in beautiful new teaser

It’s been nine years since Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding last teamed up for a new song. The two haven’t worked together since his 2014 album, Motion, in which the two created one of his biggest hits, “Outside.” She also featured on his 2012 album, 18 Months, on “I Need Your Love.”
Earlier this year, the two shared they were back in the studio, and have been offering fans small teasers of their new song, little by little. Last week, Calvin uploaded a full-HQ, one-minute teaser of their new song, “Miracle,” and it’s bringing back all of the feels.
From the preview, it feels like Ellie is hitting a bit of a higher register in “Miracle” than in their past collaborations. The beat also has early Euro influences á la “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” or “Better Off Alone.”
No official release date is available yet, but we’re hoping to hear this one in an official capacity very soon! Listen below.

Lost Lands uploads full Madeon set from iconic 2022 performance

Six months ago, Lost Lands welcomed fans back to Legend Valley for another year filled with dinosaurs and bass. Among the many acts performing over the weekend, one of the most unique bookings and sets came from French producer/DJ Madeon. Typically, his sets are far more in the realm of pop relative to heavy bass, but he clearly understood the assignment and came equipped with plenty of intense heaters.
Fan recordings have been available since shortly after last year’s festival, but Lost Lands just uploaded the official live stream footage from the set to their YouTube. Being able to enjoy the high-quality recording and audio is infinitely more enjoyable now, whether for those who were there and want to relive the experience or those who missed it altogether.
At time of publishing, the set is still currently being premiered on YouTube, so you can’t skip ahead to the end just yet. But the full set will eventually be available. Catch up below!
