  1. Sometimes here at Your EDM, we like to check out the borderlands of electronic music for a while to see how this universe is creating itself at its edges. Sort of a musical Slab City, if you will. Sometimes in that fringe yet endlessly creative space, artists dwell that are excellent but possibly not quite electronic enough for YEDM, but we watch them nonetheless. Post punk/art rock band Cosmopolis is one of those acts who were just on that leading edge of electronica who, with their latest industrial-tinged single “Nixon-Manson,” has pushed their way into the electronica consciousness, and you’d better believe we’re here for it. “Nixon-Manson” is only Cosmopolis’ fourth single since the trio, based in three different and geographically widespread cities (Brussels, Brisbane and London) but their style is already well-developed and polished. From their first single “God Hotel” in mid-2020, their trippy, semi-psychedelic style of merging guitars with psychobilly-inspired sound design was unique enough for a load of listeners and press to take notice. Developing along that post rock and post punk line, the haunting, melodic and slightly shoegzey “Sécheresse” and the minimal yet heavy Waits-or-Cave-inspired “The Distances” also contained that ambient electronic flare that once again piqued the interest of crossover music fans to see where they’d go next. Now we have an answer in “Nixon-Manson,” a decidedly EDM-y offering which dropped on Cosmopolis’ Bandcamp page last month. Hovering on the arty edge of industrial and the Love and Rockets Edge of goth, “Nixon-Manson” does a good job of showing Cosmopolis’ compositional bones, which are rooted in the classical and theatrical. Even though the song changes tempos, beat structures and even genres quite a bit along its journey to give it that arty, post rock illusion of organized chaos, it’s clear all the parts of the track were plotted meticulously along a score sheet (or screen, more likely). They would have to be, given the number of moving parts and the chaotic crescendo at the end. When the eerie, droning vox are the main grounding force of a track, you know it’s got to be meticulously designed. While it’s nice to see Cosmopolis firmly in the electronica camp now, it seems clear with their work so far that “Nixon-Manson” is not necessarily a watchword of them moving that way permanently. With a style as fluid with theirs and clear talent to make almost limitless sound ideas happen, we can’t really predict where they’ll go next, but that’s the fun of Slab City, isn’t it? You never know what you’re going to see when you venture out that way, but you know it’s always going to be impressive. “Nixon-Manson” is out now and can be streamed or purchased on Cosmopolis’ Bandcamp page. Check out their YouTube channel for more intense videos. This article was first published on Your EDM. 2. In 2017, Calvin Harris made a massive statement releasing Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1, featuring a literal who’s-who of collaborators including Frank Ocean, Future, Khalid, Nicki Minaj, Kehlani, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, John Legend, Ariana Grande, ScHoolboy Q, and more. And then… nothing. It seemed like the ‘Vol 1’ was simply an extraneous afterthought for years, with no sign that any further volume would ever be coming. In 2018, he even tweeted that he was “moving on” from the sound, though that tweet has been deleted and now we know why. Vol 2 is gonna be mad — Calvin Harris (@CalvinHarris) March 3, 2022 Predictably, the tweet ignited his fandom, but presumably extended far beyond even. The album, or EP, whatever you want to call it, was so pop heavy and impressive that it is still one of his best releases altogether with over two billion streams between all the songs. Two of those songs, “Slide” and “Feels,” make up around 80% of those streams. Stay tuned for more news on Vol 2, but for now you can listen to Vol 1 again below. 3. Just a little less than a month ago, Rezz and Subtronics teased doing a collaboration together. Today, fans can have the pleasure of streaming “Puzzle Box” from their homes, cars, or wherever any time they want. The collaboration is a brilliant combination of both artists’ unique styles, with both of them just recently releasing albums — for Rezz, her third; for Subtronics, his first. Proceeds from sales of a limited edition T-Shirt featuring the track artwork will be donated to Voices Of Children Ukraine who is providing assistance to affected children and families from all over Ukraine, providing emergency psychological assistance, and assisting in the evacuation process. https://voices.org.ua/ Listen below! 4. Nicky Romero is keeping it going with another house-heater, “So Much Love.” This time, Nicky teams up with French producer (and Protocol veteran) Almero for an energetic piano house tune that has major old school vibes. Once again, Nicky Romero steps outside of the sounds his fans might know him for. But, the results are well worth it. “So Much Love” opens up with some piano chords rising in the background. That familiar buzzing sound that opens up old house tunes is also present. From there, the vocals come in quickly as the piano notes get elevated in the mix. After a slight buildup, the drop features the piano chords over an utterly danceable four-on-the-floor beat. There’s even some light disco elements to make the track extra groovy. Check out the latest single from Nicky Romero & Almero, “So Much Love,” out now on Protocol. This article was first published on Your EDM. 5. Since Nick De La Hoyde established his dedicated EDM/lofi trio D.E.L with his brothers Matt and Timm, it seems he’s decided to focus more on the pop end of things with his solo work, at least for now. While D.E.L focuses on sound design, EDM beats and ravey composition, Nick’s last few singles have been more pop-leaning, albeit still beautifully produced with the help of those same brothers. “Devotion” is the latest example of the heady, almost ballad-like vibes this musician is capable of conjuring. The last track You EDM looked at from Nick and his brothers, “About U,” came as a double release with a D.E.L track called “Yoko,” and it’s clear in both those tracks there’s a bit of mingling of styles. With the last track of the year, however, there seems to be a conscious shift to more indie pop vibes. “No Sense” was a look at anxiety from inside one’s own head and the swirling thoughts that can lead to being overwhelmed. Certainly resonant with the bulk of the western world at the moment as a concept, “No Sense” has a Twenty One Pilots’ “Stressed Out” vibe that, while it uses some electronic production methods, lands squarely on the side of indie pop. Written by all three De La brothers, “Devotion” is only pop in terms of composition, really and it’s interesting to see them delve even deeper into indie pop. Hearkening back to indie pop’s inception with bands like fellow Aussies INXS (there’s a strong “Never Tear Us Apart” vein here), “Devotion” is bluesy, dramatic, melodic and orchestral in addition to indie and poppy. Probably one of the biggest tracks in terms of sound saturation the trio have made to-date, fans will swear they’ve heard it in a blockbuster movie. Nick, Timm and Joseph’s work has always been high quality but this is a new echelon. If “Devotion” isn’t in a film by summer, that’s the industry’s loss. It seems that separating their projects into D.E.L and Nick’s “solo” stuff has freed up the De La Hoydes to play with style, substance and genre on both sides of things, though fans probably shouldn’t get too comfortable with one being EDM and the other being pop. If anything it looks like the brothers will be folding even more mashups into their work, and no one said there wouldn’t be crossover work again. It just seems all part of the ever-expanding De La Hoyde pop/indie pop/EDM/blues/lofi/whatever else empire, and we’re definitely here for it. “Devotion” is out now on Gatacombe Music and can be streamed or purchased here. 6. When Pitbull and Ne-Yo came together in 2014, they created a timeless hit that still can be heard every weekend all over the world, “Time Of Our Lives“. We’re always keen to hear remixes of the old hits, which is why we’re so excited about Gianni Blu and D. Lylez’s epic future house rendition that is sure to go off in clubs and festivals alike all summer. Signed to Loudkult, this cover of “Time Of Our Lives” encapsulates that essential summer feeling with bright melodies and a punchy bass line that seems to transport you to the glistening beaches of Miami. The range and timbre D. Lylez brings to the table is nothing short of jaw-dropping, keeping the listener on the edge of their seat curious as to what may come next. 7. Whenever Big Gigantic drops new music, you can also count on them delivering an epic remix EP to accompany. Most recently, the Colorado based duo dropped with a six-track remix pack to ‘Leisure Season Vol. 1’ EP that traverses a wide range of electronic sounds. Bruer kicks off the EP with a thunderous take on “I Can Feel It” that is the perfect track to get a party started. LP Giobbi follows, giving “Got Me Like” an etheric house touch, taking Big Gigantic’s futuristic helping of festival-ready bass to the underground. Sippy doesn’t disappoint, delivering an electrifying, bass heavy remix to “I Like That” that you can count on hearing in Big Gigantic sets this summer. Heckler get’s glitched out on “I Like That” that can’t help but leave you in awe of his production capabilities. INZO keeps it real funky with “Keep It Low“, blessing our ears with a massive, wobbly drop. Koastle caps things off wonderfully with a Flume-esque future bass rendition of “Champagne“. Listen below! 8. With every release, Bensley proves time and again that he is a growing force to be reckoned with. We caught onto the Canadian producer with his debut album, Next Generation, all the way back in 2015 but he’s experienced a significant resurgence especially in the past couple of years. Last year he released his hit, “That Feeling,” including a positively delectable house edit and the hits haven’t stopped there. Out today is his new single on UKF, “Roll The Dice.” The song sounds like it has huge influences from the Cross The Line-era of Camo & Krooked, which is not only hard to pull off but one of the highest compliments. Catchy vocals and an even catchier melody drive this single from start to finish and keep the energy pumping. Check it out below (get it here), and be sure to catch him for his US debut next month with Brownies & Lemonade in Los Angeles. This article was first published on Your EDM. 9. Just a little under a month since ODESZA’s grand return with “The Last Goodbye” featuring Bettye LaVette, the duo are back and surprising fans with their second album single, “Better Now” with MARO. All it took was “How about one more?” on Twitter for the fanbase to, once again, be roused from its slumber with yet another incredible single. “Better Now” is new, sonically, for the Washington-duo, with elements similar to the likes of Digitalism, Glass Animals, or RAC. “It’s funny because we tried so many different collaborations with vocalists in varying genres to try to find the right fit for this song when we first made it, but for whatever reason nothing felt right,” said the duo about the track. “We’ve been big fans of MARO’s and when we sent her a short handful of demos, this was the one she resonated with and we knew she was going to do something really special with it. Truthfully, you would have to ask MARO the meaning of this tune, but to us, ‘Better Now’ is about the realization that putting yourself out there is always worth it in the end.” Listen below! 10. Sander van Doorn is back with a brilliant update of Praga Khan’s 2000 smash hit “Breakfast in Vegas.” The newly-reimagined track begins with a four-on-the-floor beat setting the tone with the vocals fading in and out in the background. Sander maintains the same hard-hitting acid flair present in the source material all while adding a modern techno flair to the track. Praga Khan’s iconic vocals hang over the track while hypnotizing the listener throughout its entirety, lending a unique element to the track. In all, the new take on ‘Breakfast in Vegas’ is a monumental release that nostalgically harkens back to the rave days of the early 2000s. If you want to bounce with some classic rave sounds, “Breakfast in Vegas” is the track for you. Take a listen to the latest from Sander van Doorn, “Breakfast in Vegas,” out now on Doorn Records. 13. The month of March has begun and upon its commencement, travelers and music lovers from all over the world are beginning to prepare themselves for ULTRA and Miami Music Week taking place at the end of March. We at Your EDM were fortunate enough to be able to sit down with one of bass music’s most talented creatives who will be performing a special live performance at ULTRA. Danny Howland, better known as SVDDEN DEATH, will be performing at ULTRA this year as the VOYD. We were able to touch base with Danny to talk about his debut ULTRA performance plus much more a month before he takes the stage in Miami. The event will be live-streamed all over the world available at https://ultramusicfestival.com Your EDM: Ultra Miami will be your debut VOYD performance in Miami, what can fans who are lovers of dubstep and bass music who have never been fortunate enough to see SVDDEN DEATH present VOYD, expect from your debut show? SVDDEN DEATH: How I differentiate VOYD and SVDDEN DEATH sets, I guess it’s better to start off with saying what is SVDDEN DEATH. SVDDEN DEATH is, creatively, I’m trying to branch out in different directions with vocals. I’m writing stuff that isn’t purely just dubstep. Whereas VOYD is a lot more focused on bass music and weird heavy stuff. Last year coming out of quarantine I played my first VOYD set in a very long time. I basically wrote an entirely new set for that show about 50 songs. Musically I’m in the process of doing the same thing right now. So I am essentially writing an entirely new set for ULTRA. I have done similar things in the past. Every time I’m performing I’m at least coming up with 30 minutes of new material. Stuff people haven’t heard because it’s not released nor have I even played it out before. Other than that I try to do a lot more theatrics, [for example] the levitation stunt. YEDM: Can we expect any surprises guests during your performance at ULTRA? SD: So I have definitely thrown around a couple ideas for surprise guests, but it really depends because I haven’t been on the stage at the same time someone else was. Those are things I want to incorporate and we’ve been throwing around a bunch of ideas but nothing is set in stone in the sense that, it really does have to visually make sense. YEDM: Do you envision in the future, separate alter egos for SVDDEN DEATH or do you see VOYD constantly evolving? SD: I always have a bunch of weird ideas, where I’m trying to throw together music and performance concepts. As far as having different aliases I’m not going to necessarily confirm or deny. As far as right now, the SVDDEN DEATH project, I definitely would like to organize it musically into different parts. I definitely have a bunch of weird concepts related to VOYD that I would like to incorporate into the project. YEDM: Your latest single, Transmutation Sequence was released on VOYD music. Do you have any intentions on starting your own label? SD: I feel like there are a lot of really really good labels right now and I feel like instead of pushing my own label right now competitively. I would rather support the other labels and help the community out a little bit more rather than doing my own thing. YEDM: When do you think fans can expect VOYD Vol. 2? This year? SD: Ok (haha) I have basically said this exact answer, I feel like to a point where it’s kind of annoying on my end… soon. Ok so here’s the actual answer. To answer your question, is it coming out this year. Yes! YEDM: Will there be any vocal performances on VOYD Vol. 2? SD: I have left the majority of my vocal performances to SVDDEN DEATH. So basically all of the songs I’m going to be releasing under SVDDEN DEATH. I’m kind of debating on releasing EP’s or a full album. But all of the songs will basically have my own vocals or other peoples vocals. YEDM: As far as VOYD Vol. 2 can you tease any collaborations or will it primarily be solo work? SD: VOYD Vol. 2 will be all solo work. YEDM: Are there influences outside of music that have helped shaped the SVDDEN DEATH project today? SD: Definitely a lot of things. I listen to a lot of music and ingest a lot of art because it’s very motivating for me. Eventually I want to become a visual artist. Like doing random stuff like 3D stuff or illustration and painting. For VOYD I took a lot of inspiration from Berserk. Even before I read through all the manga. As soon as I watched the first anime I was really visually inspired by the dark themes, the drama and the demons. That was really fundamental to help build a visual template for the universe that I am creating separately for VOYD. Other than that I would say dungeons and dragons. I was always obsessed with that as a kid. YEDM: What words of advice do you have to people who look up to you? SD: I would definitely say surrounding yourself with people that are extremely devoted to making cool art is the most important thing you can do towards making a cool project. If I was to give advice to someone who wants to make dubstep or bass music, I think that there are no boundaries to the music. I think that trying to learn as many different musical skills as you can is really good to have under your tool belt. Figuring out things like why does a snare sound like it does and figuring out how to synthesize that. It’s kind of like bringing things back to their fundamental points. YEDM: 4 years ago you tweeted “VOYD is just dubstep, that’s it!” Now that 4 years have gone by how would you describe VOYD to people that are unfamiliar with the project. SD: VOYD is a collaborative art project that definitely is based around dubstep and bass music, we try to do a bunch of theatrics, and make each performance individually very specific to where we are playing. Basically it’s like a showcase of trying to have fun with dark art stuff and music and trying to make it as entertaining as possible. YEDM: Outside of musical collaborations, do you see VOYD doing collaborations with anyone else? SD: I feel like I have been a bit cautious about over-merchandising stuff. All it really is to me is a character. It definitely has a lot of depth to it. But when you strip it away it’s just me in a mask. I definitely think I’m open to merchandising it a bit more but I want to keep it a bit more simple if it makes sense. The answer is yes but tastefully! This article was first published on Your EDM. Kevin’s experience doesn’t stop there, he was a resident at the now-closed Envy Club, a #72 DJ MAG Top 100 Clubs, and is currently one of the main residents of Station One Club, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Incredible releases and breathtaking live performances are what made Kevin Krissen a household name in Vietnam and in the Asian community, he is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling artists to follow in 2022. We sat down with Kevin to ask a few questions many of his fans want to hear the answer to: You’ve had an incredible experience in Vietnam so far, can you name a few highlights from your career? My biggest accomplishment yet was playing at Ultra Korea on the Mainstage for sure. I was one of those guys that would watch these big festivals and dream of one day being able to perform in one of them, it was a dream coming to reality. The moment I saw my name in the lineup was an unforgettable memory, and certainly one that I will cherish forever. My second biggest achievement was to sign a song on Hardwell’s imprint, Revealed Records. This was one of my goals since the beginning, and to be honest I still have only have positive things to say about Revealed. The third biggest achievement for me is to be able to perform. I just feel very grateful every time I step on the stage. Especially when I play with incredibly talented artists, it is very inspiring! What is your biggest goal? Well, you would probably guess as this is the thing that most artists dream of doing. My goal is to play at Tomorrowland Belgium, Mainstage! What are your main influences on music? I’m all about festival music. I love everything about it, the way it sounds, the way it makes people go crazy and enjoy themselves… I just can’t get enough of the atmosphere and I want to share it with as many people as possible. 18. Having collaborated with the likes of MONXX and K-NINE, as well as earned the trust of labels such as Halcyon, Disciple, Never Say Die, Buygore and Subsidia, Automhate is one of the most exciting bass music acts currently rising out of Italy. The 22-year-old producer kicked off his career independently back in 2018, and hasn’t looked back ever since, consistently sharing music that blurs the line between dubstep and riddim, while having set himself up for a massive 2022. Automhate’s latest release comes in the form of “RAVE DUB,” and directly follows his recent remix for Kompany’s “Untouchable.” Out via Borgore’s record label Buygore, on which Automhate debuted back in 2020, “RAVE DUB” acts as an amazing testament to the buzzing producer’s incredible production skills, bringing together catchy house sequences with intense bass drops. 20. Canabliss recently debuted her brand new Plasma EP, a four-track collection out now on WAKAAN that drips with creativity and steady, deliberate flow. Since 2019, the Toronto-based producer has consistently released bass-forward singles, heavy on the low end with emphasis on sound design, originality and flair. More recently, we premiered her 2021 single “Freak It,” which released via SSKWAN and she graced our Top 40 Artists to Watch in 2022 list. Every production we’ve heard thus far has an unmistakeable, audible watermark — comprised of the kind of sounds you hear and instantly think Canabliss. Staying true to her signature style, the Plasma EP colors outside the lines of the project’s core soundscape, introducing darker undertones as well as softer, reflective moments. Canabliss shares in her own words: Electricity is everywhere, even in our own brains. “Currents” is about forming connections spiritually and physically in life. In this EP ‘Plasma’ I explored new sound design with tons of heavy bass and dark atmospheres to help express some of the more difficult times we experienced these past couple years. In Canada we’ve still been pretty much locked down without any live music available, so writing music has been my primary outlet. Listen to the latest from Canabliss here and link up below! Kill The Noise and Seven Lions have collaborated a number of time, for “The Blood,” “Horizon,” “Cold Hearted,” and “Pantheon.” Now, they’re together again for the 3rd single from KTN’s upcoming sophomore album, “Without You.” Singer Julia Ross, who’s achieved two Billboard #1 records as a co-writer for BTS, provides the perfect vocal performance over the groovy, driving house beat that switches to a huge melodic festival Ophelia Records 2021 banger in the second act. “Without You” continues the string of high performing collabs between the two producers and blends the best of their sound design, styles and melodic sensibility for another unforgettable, genre-blending track. As 2022 unfolds, Kill The Noise will be unveiling even more material leading up to the release of the album. Listen to “Without You” below! 22. It’s been about four months with the last Swedish House Mafia single, “Moth To A Flame” with The Weeknd. Today, they continue on the path toward their album with a cover of The Police’s “Roxanne,” featuring none other than the lead singer himself, Sting. The new single, “Redlight,” offers a heavy bassline and dark warehouse vibes that stay true to the Swedish House Mafia sound. It’s only halfway into the song that Sting’s voice makes an appearance, belting out those iconic lyrics from “Roxanne” — You don’t have to put on the red light If we get any more songs like this, in addition to the previously released singles, this could be a powerfully anthemic album, one that fans have been hoping for. 23. Let’s just get this out of the way now for the old schoolers: if this was the mid-to-late 90s or even earlier, Mint June would not be seen as experimental. With lashings of early industrial, techno and electro house making up the bulk of his work, this project dreamed up by composer Jeremy Jung in 2019 would be easily classed as electro house or breaks, akin to Electroliners or DJ Icey. Apparently that stuff is now old enough to be reborn in new formats and mashups, and honestly we’re here for it. Philosophically opposed to big business rave and EDM culture, Jung started his Mint June project not just as a throwback to the underground days but as a re-formulation of that sound with cleaner modern techniques. To wit: the first track on his first EP, test 1 EP, is called “Opposite of Coachella.” This guy knows what he’s about. With test EP 1 Containing loads of different beat styles and some genuine experimental elements, it’s also clear Jung isn’t merely here to thumb his nose as festival culture and remind us of our roots. There’s a joy in playing with synth manipulation, mods and even those classic straight beats he’s so fond of. Jung’s love is for the science of sound as much as it is for early rave culture, so in this way he’s also quite experimental. Enter, Surrendering Nina. Concept albums are not exactly huge in EDM culture at the moment, since the pop machine is definitely driving a large part of that train. They’ve definitely been relegated to the more fringe elements of electronic music: IDM, electro, industrial and, here comes that word again, experimental. The Surrendering Nina EP is, in Jung’s eyes more than anything else, a concept piece that tells a story. And what is the story it tells? Underground rave, of course. Each track has its own vibe that I think is tailored to the overall ethos of the project, portraying the beauty and disorder of modern underground rave culture through the tale of Nina, a part-time bartender who finds herself overindulging in drug use when she meets a new friend named Paige. “Paige” is actually where the story starts with Surrendering Nina, and it seems Jung would like us to draw our conclusions from there. Anyone who’s been to an underground rave knows this story, and as the largely electro house vibes take us through Nina and Paige’s night via “You’ll Like It,” “Those Guys,” Montage” and “Nina,” the nostalgia for many fans will be so strong that we can actually smell what’s happening. From “Paige” convincing to try an underground party (and its drugs via “Those Guys”), the blissful dancing “Montage” as all these new feelings are discovered to the transcendental finding of a new self in the morning after leaving the warehouse with “Nina”…all these events are familiar and definitely have a soundtrack. For those of us who started raving in the 80s and 90s, Surrendering Nina is that soundtrack. Jung’s even made a film to go with the EP, and it’s all too familiar (film embedded bellow). Surrendering Nina as an EP is every rave movie you’ve ever seen and every true raver’s origin story. It’s what separates pop EDM from rave and it’s clearly something Jung as Mint June is passionate about and knows well from experience. It may seem experimental now but it was all experimental at one point. In the age of EDC and pop artists merging with EDM, festivals costing more than a Rolling Stones concert and no guarantee that the person next to you on the dancefloor feels that same home in their heart, Mint June is here as a reminder that there are still plenty of us out there, and we will always know how to surrender to the beat. Surrendering Nina is out now and can be streamed on Spotify or purchased (with a cool vinyl option) on Bandcamp. Click here for all platform options. This article was first published on Your EDM. Their track “The Void,” stitches a hefty bunch of vibes under one roof to cultivate a sound that’s long-lasting. Sharing drops that are doused with synths reminiscent of future bass plus an all around aura of rocky moods and resilience, “The Void,” will fill you up with it’s good graces.
