Charting New Music Territory: A PermanentShadow’s New Single Hits the Airwaves
There is a special kind of magic in songs that spring from the most unexpected sources. For artists, sometimes the best creations are those originally intended for a different purpose. These unplanned treasures often possess an authentic essence that resonates with listeners. CP Fletcher of A Permanent Shadow has penned a song that is an example of this concept. Through the winding journey of life and emotions, Fletcher discovered and honed an extraordinary piece: “A Xmas Gift in May.” Initially conceived as a private gift, this song eventually became a heartfelt expression of romance. The song’s backstory is intriguing; Fletcher composed the track in 2021, initially titled “Black Lolita.” It was dedicated to a fleeting and tumultuous romance. As Fletcher revisited the song, the potency of the emotions captured within it was undeniable. He decided to share this piece, hoping that the audience would connect with the genuine sentiments embodied in the song. “A Xmas Gift in May” stands out due to its blend of classic and contemporary elements. The track alludes to 60s pop, particularly reminiscent of tracks like “All You Need Is Love,” but executed with modern production techniques. The rhythmic backbone of the song is consistent, and the instrumentation effectively complements the emotional fabric of the lyrics. There’s an interesting twist to the release. Fletcher teamed up with Valen Nieto, a seasoned collaborator, to produce a remix of the song. The remix takes a retro turn, borrowing from 80s Italo Disco. It’s a throwback, and yet, it feels fresh. Along with the original and the remix, an intimate version with just piano and lead vocals is part of the release. This stripped-down rendition allows the listener to delve into the raw emotion that Fletcher initially set out to capture. However, fans should not expect this single to be a part of A Permanent Shadow’s upcoming album, No Leaf Clover. The album takes a divergent thematic direction. While “A Xmas Gift in May” is rich in romance, the LP is set to explore darker, more somber themes. Consequently, the single is being released independently. No Leaf Clover will be A Permanent Shadow’s third album, following Songs of Loss (2019) and Humdrum (2022). Fletcher is the constant driving force behind the project, with support from the multi-instrumentalist Nieto and keyboardist Albert Català. There’s more in store from A Permanent Shadow. The ensemble is diligently working on an EP that consists exclusively of cover songs, showcasing their ability to reinterpret and breathe new life into existing works. They are also engaged in brainstorming sessions for their fourth album. The current focal point, however, is undoubtedly the new single, which is expected to create its fair share of noise while fully engaging listeners. “A Xmas Gift in May” is an honest and emotionally rich single. It has the duality of a classic and contemporary sound, and its genesis from a personal emotional space adds a layer of authenticity. It’s always intriguing when artists share something deeply personal – even if that’s not at all what they originally intended. Fortunately, with therelease of “A Xmas Gift in May,” CP Fletcher has let the rest of us in on his sweet and soulful secret. This article was first published on Your EDM. Maero’s Showcases Production Versatilty in New World Order (Episode 1)
Fusing his classical formation with a bold exploration of electronic textures, Maero composes avant-garde, genre-blurring journeys that transport listeners to the depths of his imaginary sun verse. From uplifting orchestral anthems to glitchy, dystopian odysseys, each piece is distinctly unique yet all are unmistakably Maero. Dramatic, immersive, and ever-evolving, Maero’s creations melt the real world away – for those willing to take the ride. Beyond music, Maero creates immersive worlds. His debut album Awakening is brought to life in a 12-episode animated visual album depicting a mythical hero’s journey in an original, fictional universe. From New World Order’s dystopian battle to Ghost’s plea to God and Fantasia’s discovery of love, Awakening stands as a symbol of Maero’s universe – a new kind of experience, a world never seen before “When writing music, I’ve always felt I’m discovering stories happening in imaginary worlds and bringing them to life. For my debut, I wanted to paint a genesis story, a disruptive arrival into an existing world. It became clear that New World Order, with its tenseful intro and dark, beat-driven energy, would be the perfect symbol for that statement. As I contemplated the release, I realized I could not tell these stories fully without bringing them to life with visual, cinematic experiences. And so with New World Order as its first episode, the Awakening visual saga was born.” This article was first published on Your EDM. Bishu & Nevve Team Up For Sun Soaked House Single “No Rush”
If you’ve ever watched Twitch, you have almost certainly heard of Bishu, one of the top 0.1% most-watched and highest-earning musicians on the multi-billion-dollar livestreaming platform. Having started down the path of a more traditional music career as a touring musician releasing on labels such as Mad Decent, Monstercat, and Dim Mak, Drew quickly realized his passion was for creating music and content and less so for running through airports and sleeping in motels on the road. He decided to take a bold step and forgo his touring career to instead focus on streaming live on Twitch and uploading videos to YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and other digital platforms. With recurring shows such as Fake Genres and Bishbattles, sponsorships from top tier brands in the music software and gaming industries, and a rapidly growing presence across all major digital media platforms driven by a combination of consistent content distribution and regular viral moments, Bishu is pioneering a new business model for the independent artist that promotes an artist’s physical and mental health, financial security, and career stability, all without having to leave his front door. Now, he’s back with a sun soaked single “No Rush”, teaming up with iconic vocal collective Nevve. The song feels like a summer anthem through and through, with glistening melodies and a uplifting arrangement sure to move your feet and spread a smile across your face. “I started this song with a completely different vocal, I was stoked on the production and really wanted it to see the light of day. However, something happened with that vocal (it was already taken or used), so the song was pretty much dead in the water. Until I received the Nevve vocal. I pitched it up a little bit and it somehow just worked. Pumped to have this out!” – Bishu Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Martron grew up a classically trained musician, it wasn’t until early in his senior year of high school that he discovered his fondness for electronic music. Martron creates an eclectic yet balanced blend in his music that combines his charming classical roots with his energetic electronic sound. The industry and artists alike are taking notice, with Martron recently being recruited to perform guest mixes for Lizzy Jane’s “XO Radio” mix series as well as Niiko X SWAE’s “NXS Radio” mix series on prestigious Insomniac Radio. Now, he’s back with a hyperpop infused trap single “True Colors” thats an explosion of colorful melodies and thunderous bass. He masterfully weaves a heavily autotuned vocals alongside ricocheting synths to build into what is an electrifying drop sure to take your energy to a 10. It may have taken 5 years to finish but man do I love this song! The energy, the vibe, the blend of lighter and darker elements, this is the quintessential Martron track. “True Colors” is about finding and weeding out the toxic people in my life that chose to take me for granted or stab me in the back instead of having it. It’s also about putting energy into the people that care about me and who’ve stood in my corner when they could’ve easily walked away. If this song could say one thing I hope it’s this: Lean into the people who love you and don’t let people take advantage of you. You’re worth more than you know.” – Martron Listen below! Your EDM Premiere: Exept are Back and they Didn’t Miss a Beat With New Crossover Jam
Okay so it’s not entirely accurate to say the Rome based duo known as Exept are just returning with their first full-length album Black Soul, due out this Friday, June 26 on Delta9 Recordings. On top of the album teaser tracks “Icebreaker” and “Nightbreath” that D9 released in the last month, Exept have also featured on a number of collabs on the imprint as well as a brand new single on Blackout’s Adaptations Gen. II compilation EP with their fast and fizzy track, “Crystal Hammer.” So, they’ve been back after a nearly two year break since June 2022, but Black Soul will be the first time in a while we’ve all been slapped with a hefty dose of Exept. For those who don’t recall, Exept debuted as a duo on Noisia’s Invisible label in 2018, so they really hit the ground running and didn’t stop with subsequent releases, dropping bombs on Pseudoscience, Vision proper, Dispatch and Surveillance Records before COVID hit. The pandemic hit especially hard in Italy so it’s not surprising that the Exept boys may have had more pressing matters on their hands, but now they’re picking up where they left off with their unique brand of neuro and on an epic LP full of innovative twists and turns, no less. Fans who’ve listened to “Icebreaker” and “Nightbreath” will already know that Black Soul is more than cookie-cutter neurofunk. “Icebreaker” is spliced with 174 techno but punters may not clock it because it’s blended in with hurricane synths, jazzy hi-hats and deep bass sine waves. “Nightbreath” starts off with a conventional D&B beat but after an ambient break it goes 140 in the weirdest way before plonking back into 174 seemingly out of nowhere and then toggling between minimal dubstep, more 174 straight beats and D&B. If you were wondering if Exept had lost their edge in the last two years, the answer is clearly a resounding “no”. If anything, they’re edgier than ever. Black Soul has a rich narrative as an album on top of the dancefloor slappers contained in each track. The opening track is a lush, ambient, beatless track that sounds like the intro credits to a video game that then drops seamlessly into the title track. The closing track is also called “Black Soul” and is similarly beatless and classically inspired, intended to put a period on the end of the album’s sentence. In between, there’s loads of genre jumping, like the dub-tempoed “Discordia” and the proper halftime “Nero” as well as loads of glitchy, itchy drum & bass like “Not for You” with Disprove, “Missin Online” with Slwdwn and the first title track. If Exept established their style between 2018 and 2020, in this new era it appears they’re planning to take it in every possible direction, if Black Soul is anything to go by. Our YEDM premiere and, fortuitously, the last teaser before Black Soul drops, is for the whiplash-inducing penultimate track on the album, “Don’t Trust Me.” With a celestial intro that quickly descends into multi-beat chaos, this track is a highlight amongst highlights on this album. Similar to “Nightbreath” in that it contains multiple beat structures, “Don’t Trust Me” is even more maniacal because it morphs from its fast techno into breakbeat and then glitch-neuro so seamlessly with the use of cyclonic snares and switchbacks that listeners will genuinely wonder how they got to the middle of the track from the beginning. A sonic epic journey contained in three minutes and 29 seconds, “Don’t Trust Me” is a full thesis answer to the question, “what happens when D&B producers decide to treat techno like D&B?” Though they’re likely enjoying another little break after the hard graft of making Black Soul, it’s clear the Exept boys are ready to prove that their legacy isn’t solely those first two years after Noisia got a hold of them. There’s much more to come from the breakout Italian artists, and in the meantime we can all revel in – and figure how to mix out of – the tracks and musical journey that is Black Soul. Black Soul drops Friday, June 24 on Delta9 Recordings. Pre-order on Bandcamp or Beatport. This article was first published on Your EDM. The War Within: A Fresh Sound in the World of CCM
The War Within is a fresh face to the contemporary Christian music scene. John Harter is a gifted songwriter who has honed his craft by fusing the vitality of indie pop with the great melodies of modern CCM and other influences. The War Within is more than just another generic musical act, and that’s what sets it apart. He has worked hard to develop his own unique style, letting his personal experiences and feelings inform the content of his songs rather than falling back on tired clichés and formulas. Because of John’s powerful and approachable persona as a singer and songwriter, this is not only a fantastic way for artists to get a distinctive sound, but also a fantastic chance for The War Within to become a household name. His music has its origins in the worship music scene, but it also has a unique quality that sets it apart. The artist’s lyrics and melodies are, as the project’s name suggests, haunting and dark. Some of the artists in this group put a strong emphasis on the positive, praising God and the vibrant beauty of his love. Don’t get me wrong, I think these artists are doing fantastic work, and I appreciate what they’re creating. Every single one of us has our share of difficulties. Jesus, the most righteous man who ever lived, fought his own “war within” when he was tempted by the devil in the desert. Even after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, Jesus was tempted by Satan with many earthly delights. It wasn’t an easy fight, and many people deal with difficulties like that every day. The good news is that God encourages us all to draw courage from Jesus and wisdom from his example as we struggle with our own personal demons. Having faith in Christ gives us something to hold on to even when times are tough and the odds seem stacked against us. The EP “Stone Heart” was just released, and it features four brand new songs written by the artist that delve into profound, inward themes. This album exemplifies the art of thoughtful Christian songwriting and production by striking a perfect balance between accessibility and originality. The War Within also released an album titled here/after, which featured cover versions of their previous material. There are 40 songs on the album, a significant number when you consider Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Whether or not the album’s title was chosen for its spiritual significance, it is still an incredibly moving and inspiring undertaking. Given the anxiety and hardship caused by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the release of here/after couldn’t have come at a better time for listeners. The War Within has made it clear that they are willing to support and work with other artists in the worship music community, despite the fact that opportunities for coming together and collaborating are limited. These creatives haven’t given up because they’ve been encouraged by their faith to make something bigger than themselves. This album cover is something truly unique. This new Christian album puts heart and soul into its core concept. If you like the music of influential groups like Hillsong, Bethel, or Elevation Worship, you’ll probably dig this. At this point, it is safe to say that The War Within has been going strong since its inception. The act has had a string of hits with excellent albums, and his discography is so expansive that it includes everything from catchy new hooks to driving melodies and rhythms. Review: Florian Picasso switches things up with ‘Waking Dream’
Image credit: Olivia Lamm With his latest track, House producer Florian Picasso has strayed into new territory. Having previously released predominantly Tech House music – or at least this remains true for the other singles he released earlier this year (‘Unwind’, ‘The Edge’, ‘Make Me Dance’) – his new single, out this Friday, is something different. Pre-save ‘Waking Dream’ Still falling under the House umbrella, his newest track, ‘Waking Dream’, is lighter and more easy-listening. Well, then, what genre would this fall under, precisely? The La Californie Musique producer tells us: “I have been very influenced by the French touch like Cassius and Fred again’s groove for this one.” ‘Waking Dream’ begins with a soulful piano. Next, it adopts a set of driving drums, a melody-guided bassline, and, as is Florian’s style, a series of vocal cuts that bolster the track’s internal rhythm. Then, a gospel organ takes over to heighten the track’s fervour, before it returns to its prior enthusiastic state. Producer E39 and band KARMACODA announce official remix of ‘Time Flies’
Image credit: Bill Shupp Electronica band KARMACODA will be releasing a new rework of their original track by the same name this Friday. Titled ‘Time Flies (E39 Spring Ahead Mix)’, the track was remixed by the New York producer Peter Tanico and has been attributed to his moniker, E39. Out soon via Sola Musa Music. Pre-save ‘Time Flies (E39 Spring Ahead Mix)’ The remix follows another official remix that he crafted for the San Francisco-based band, a track named ‘Dare (E39 Mixshow)’, which adds to the band’s extensive remix catalogue. Their catalogue includes work by the duo Extrawelt and multi-instrumentalist Sailor & I among others. The band’s lead singer shared her thoughts: “E39 has produced my favorite remixes for KARMACODA, so when he said ‘yes’ to remixing ‘Time Flies’ I told B, ‘we’ve got to jump at the chance!’ It is exactly what I hoped for. You will move, you’ll head bob, it’s a bop! So good.” The remix is an old-school House reinterpretation of the original. The kick and snare set an easy-going groove, enhancing the reflective mood of the band’s vocals. Tropical guitars add a dream-like feeling, and a muffled, pitched-down vocal textures the beat, layering on an extra dimension. Blood Oyster Releases a New ‘Greatest Hits’ Compilation and Visualizer Movie In Support of Planned Parenthood
In 2021, YEDM did a New Artist Spotlight on Portlander experimental artist Jason Wann and his conceptual project SINES which, at that time, was on its third multi-track release. Through that album, called A Series of Moments, Wann combined all the best bits of synth pop and gave them a modern twist with dabbles of female vox accompaniments and different beat structures. Not afraid to play with future bass, techno, bass house and, of course, vintage synth pop, SINES shows great promise to be the next Odesza or Washed Out hybrid. Not a lot of fans or press, for that matter, knew that between all the lovely and celestial synth pop releases, Wann was also interstitially releasing under a different project name called Blood Oyster. Almost completely opposite in every way from SINES, Blood Oyster is entrenched in booty bass, hip hop and trap with an emphasis on ‘booty.’ The aptly named Let Booty Loose featuring rapper Honey B. Sweet released in April 2021 followed by the even dirtier Pussy Power in October while Wann and SINES music partner Kitty Richardson were working on A Series of Moments. It must have been a colossal brain toggle for Wann. Designed as a tongue-in-cheek nose-thumbing at the patriarchy and its need to control women’s bodies, Blood Oyster is about as intentionally nasty as a 2LiveCrew or a WAP with track names like “From the Back” and “Throbbing Hard Penis.” As these ironic statement EPs that are seemingly about objectification were being made, Wann was becoming more and more frustrated with the way women are either exploited or repressed over the last few years. This frustration culminated, as it did for so many Americans, in the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in June of 2022. Seen by many as the ultimate and most blatant sign that the US not only doesn’t care about bodily autonomy for women and people with uteruses, this decision, made possible by the ushering in of two new far right wing SCOTUS justices before the end of Donald Trump’s presidential has unleashed a wave of states winding back the clock to pre-1973 rules and regulations. States banned abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood, made even early term abortions illegal (including in cases of rape) and some states even made it possible for parents who went through with an abortion to be tried for murder. With the dystopian nightmare described in Margaret Atwood’s fictional book The Handmaid’s Tale suddenly turned reality and Atwood a prophetess thanks to Brett Kavanaugh and especially ultimate Gilead Wife Amy Coney Barrett, loads of artists decided to protest what has now been going on in the US for just about a year. Along with the likes of Pussy Riot, Phoebe Bridgers, Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo, Mariah Carey, Lizzo et al., Wann felt he couldn’t leave this issue alone. Suddenly a cheeky commentary on how women are used in media and abused in private turned into an all-out protest with Greatest Hits. Full of tracks from the original two Blood Oyster EPs plus heaps more, the 30-track Greatest Hits makes a bold statement that no matter what sort of laws are places on them, women’s bodies self-worth an sexuality will always be owned by them. Wann as Blood Oyster makes this statement in the most fun way possible, with loud, colorful booty bass beats, unapologetic lyrics and so many catchy tunes. Be careful; you could find yourself singing the Daft Punk-esque “ASS” in your head at work or laughing at the somehow both sexual and creepy “Everybody Loves Raymond” at inappropriate times. This whole “series of bootlegs” is inappropriate, of course, but that’s the point. A tapestry of impropriety woven with much more experimental music and flare than we’ve seen from Wann thus far, the album juxtaposes the pure sensual potential of women and humanity against some of its worst detractors so show what this oppression and control can actually do. With so many of our idols fallen and so much damage done in the name of propriety, it’s time to take a good hard look at rape culture; just ask “Dr. Huxtable.” As if the Blood Oyster album weren’t enough, Wann has also put together an arty “series of visualizers” (who knew that album name would be such a fun callback?) to go with Greatest Hits. Because it’s a bootleg album, Wann has put the veritable movie up on his Vimeo account for free public viewing. Not quite as dirty visually as it is musically, the multimedia side of Greatest Hits takes the artistry of the album up a few notches. Watch it with some good speakers on a good TV and you’ve basically got yourself an at-home rave. Funny, kitschy and full of the love Wann has for women that listeners to the album alone may not feel, the visualizer movie is definitely worth a watch (possibly on some mind-altering substances). Blood Oyster: The Movie! from jason wann on Vimeo. Even if you’re into into booty bass or experimental bass or fun visualizers, there’s another reason to support Blood Oyster and the Greatest Hits album: all profits from its purchase on Bandcamp will be donated to Planned Parenthood in Amy Coney Barrett’s name. That’s right, in the tradition of Mike Pence, Ted Cruz and other anti-uterus rights politicians, Wann has decided that Coney Barrett should be the next recipient of this honor to be reminded every day that those who value the lives of women and children will continue to fight for their health. The link for the album is here (and also in the video above) but we also encourage fans of ladyparts everywhere to take up this petty (and important) cause and donate to the thing SCOTUS and so many other misguided politicians are trying to destroy. And if you don’t want to donate, have a cheeky, sexy little rave in your living room or car, courtesy of Blood Oyster. This article was first published on Your EDM. 44 Ardent Releases Mesmerizing Single “bones (sinking like stones)”
44 Ardent is a master at his craft, with a unique capability at blending ambient soundscapes with addictive deep house grooves. His latest single “bones (sinking like stones)” is no exception, beautifully showcasing not only his talent, but how truly special of an artist he is. The vocals has a tranquil, nearly blissful quality that soothes your body instantaneously while swaying percussion and soft synth melodies envelop your in a warm embrace. “This song was written in early 2022 when Meanjin (Brisbane) was flooding. Floods are heartbreaking times and can be life-changing experiences for those involved. The flood was devastating, but it also highlighted the strength and resilience of our community. It’s quite easy to lose faith in humanity sometimes, but during the floods, everyone rallied together and there were countless people helping total strangers to clean up and move belongings. So, to me, I found that there was some beauty in amongst all the destruction – a silver lining, I suppose. This song is a bit of a reflection on the emotions I was feeling at the time. It was initially a much slower, sadder song, but over time during the writing process, I ended up speeding it up a fair bit and changing the style. I suppose at its core, it’s a song about people coming together in difficult times. I like to think that most people are inherently good and trying their best, and times like these do help to reinforce that belief.” ~ 44 Ardent Listen below!
