New Artist Spotlight: 3Fifs Bid to Revive Booty Bass With Upcoming EP [Video]
Despite the updated big booty bass sound and feel of his most recent single “Big Drip,” the Florida-based artist known as 3Fifs generally has generally had a more-heard-hitting style during his decade-long career. The St. Louis native uses his diverse musical style to drive his deeper points home, as is exemplified in the re-release last year of one his of first and heaviest singles, “Dive In Deep.” Now with his return to hip hop, this Urban Songwriter of the Year is just getting started. 3Fifs’s name is a clear reference to the oppression and enslavement of black people in the United States, and his music started off with the same message with his debut single “Dive In Deep” and his 2013 album, Birth of a Nation. “Dive In Deep” featuring Lydia Lyon appeared later on the equally visceral The Runaway EP and is a jazzy update on the classic “Wade In the Water” spiritual song sung by enslaved people in the south. “Dive in Deep” is the first song I ever recorded, but I never promoted it; despite all my day-1 fans encouraging me to do so. As someone inspired by Black history, I knew I wanted to flip a Negro spiritual, and “Wade in the Water” was the first one to come to mind. I wrote the song in my head while I was working a job at the mall and thinking about the type of woman I wanted…“Dive in Deep” is my signature song: it represents everything I am as an artist – smooth, laid back, introspective, and classy. The story and the beat are sexy, the video features my brother, my sister, and my cousin, O So Amazin’, who was tragically taken from us too soon. 3Fifs’s tie-ins to black history aren’t always in his vocals, as he states above, but they nonetheless are very much in the listener’s face. Both Birth of a Nation and The Runaway have stark, callback-to-slavery imagery and toggle between heavy subject matter with tracks like “Preamble,” “Jim Crow,” “Dred Scott” and, of course “Dive In Deep,” and more standard-style bangers like “Danny Bonaduce” feat. O So Amazin and Streetza Ria and “Due Time” feat. Khyre. His flexibility helps get these deeper messages across and has also amassed him an impressive following, with his new ventures amassing nearly a combined 200,000 listens on Spotify. Since re-entering the limelight in 2021 with his single “Season of the Fall,” 3FIfs has launched into some of the newer styles like heavy bass trap but fans can bet his ties to the golden age haven’t gone away completely. The very next track after “Season of the Fall ” is “Smoke In the Breeze,” a smooth, jazzy melding of Nas-style big beat and Dr. Dre funk. Both tracks are fun, danceable, and, most importantly, contain well-spit verses with zero mumble rap. Moving to “Big Drip,” it’s clear 3Fifs wanted to pull some throwback booty bass influence from his move to Florida, and hip hop historians will be able to hear the hint of 2 Live Crew in this track, but it’s also extremely modern and incorporates trap and pop sounds. “Big Drip” may sound like it’s just a fun, collar-popping track but 3Fifs says there’s more to it than that. It’s a very braggadocious song, but as the line says “I spit like I live it:” I was one of the first people to reserve the new Hummer SUV straight off my car business money; my Mom and I lived in a homeless shelter when I was young, but now she has a home on 5 acres, and my Granny definitely was proud of me until her dying day. It’s a feel-good song with a bouncy beat and authentic realism. Hopefully others will relate. “Season of the Fall,” “Smoke In the Breeze” and “Big Drip” will all feature on 3Fifs’s upcoming The Middle Passage EP, which is due out in 2024. As has always been the case with 3Fifs, fans can expect a healthy mix of deep, thought-provoking concepts, stark imagery and a running history of music in the remaining releases. It seems 3Fifs isn’t nearly finished with his message and music yet, and hip hop can only benefit from his presence. “Big Drip” is out now on Spotify along with the rest of 3Fifs work. Deucez Drops Tantalizing Melodic Riddim Track “Fate (The Way It Is)”
Deucez has had a busy 2023 so far releasing an official remix for ATLiens on Bassrush and embarking on his debut headline tour across 19 cities and counting. Deucez is well known for his heavy gritty riddim within the bass community but has opted for more of a feel-good melodic vibe with his brand new track “Fate (The Way It Is)” out now Cyclops Recordings. It’s a catchy blend of a more pop centered vocal backed by a crisp hip hop beat. It all builds wonderfully towards a tantalizing, uplifting drop that carries a lot of sparks. When asked about how he came up with the track Deucez said: “This song came about when wanting to write a song about how the universe brought my fiancé and I together. How sometimes the people we meet in life can make us feel at home without trying and how inevitable feelings blossom.” He also went on to say “Going into this track I wanted to make something different than my norm not only by recording vocals but the vibe and feeling of the track to really express the feelings involved with love. Midnight Pool Party Release Thumping New Single “Stamina”
Midnight Pool Party has proven that not only are they house connoisseurs, but kings of creating amazing grooves within each single. Their latest is no exception to the greatness we’ve come to expect from the talented duo, as they’ve unleashed a thumping tech house single “Stamina“. They view it as a song powerful enough to keep your party battery charged and in full swing all weekend long. It’s also one of the song ideas that they wrote during a weekend writing session earlier this year which resulted in a tidy collection of demos that they feel really good about and will be sharing with us all very soon. “This was one of the songs we wrote at the beginning of the year, just after Sydney World Pride where I (Darren), was out partying every day and night. Every weekend for the last 2 years I’ve also been working in the gay club scene, and a lot of people would say to me “I don’t know how you have the stamina to go out every weekend”, so that inspired me to write a banger about partying all the time. Nocturnal Wonderland Continues Its Tradition of Excellence [Event Review]
Original Photo by Ivan Meneses for Insomniac Events Earlier this month, Insomniac put on the 28th edition of Nocturnal Wonderland, North America’s longest running rave. I was lucky enough to attend once again this year, and like a Swiss train, Nocturnal just consistently delivers. Whether it’s the immaculate vibes that cannot be matched by any other Insomniac fest, the always stacked lineup, the familiar venue and setup, or the Cosmic Equinox itself; Nocturnal retains its uniqueness and charm. I don’t think there’s any other festival where you have a confluence of people raving for their first time and OGs who have been there since the early days. Once again taking place at the pristine Glen Helen Regional Park in hills north of San Bernardino, this year’s edition of Nocturnal featured absolutely perfect weather. Just because the equinox is on the calendar doesn’t mean that the Southern California summer is over. This year, though, headliners were treated to pleasant fall-like weather, with temperatures never exceeding 80 degrees. In fact, it was downright cloudy on Saturday. As I mentioned, the Nocturnal festival grounds are very familiar to anyone who’s ever been, and with only three official stages, it’s supremely easy to navigate. For non-campers, they walked up the hill to the Glen Helen Pavilion entrance, you walk up the ramp decorated by blacklight painted ferns and you either walk up the hill to the Labyrinth stage, which was headlined by Bassrush all weekend long, or you walked (stumbled) down the hill to Sunken Garden and Wolves’ Den. While the stages at Nocturnal usually retain most of their form from the previous year, unlike EDC, there were some notable differences at the main stage. While it retained the massive circle video panel in the middle of the stage. The top of the stage was adorned in neon colored flowers that bloomed over the course of the nights. The Nocturnal Wonderland logo was front and center while the top border of the stage featured blacklight painted wood panels. The lasers and pyro only got bigger from last year. While the stage maintained the same design, it dispensed with the multiple smaller TV-like video panels for a single long diagonal video panel on each side leading to the tall vertical video panel. Again, lasers and pyro were on point at the stage. My only criticism is that the volume was significantly lower at Labyrinth than at the main stage. Sunken Garden was pushed back a little to allow for more foot traffic (good move) and appeared to be the same as last year. Every single set was amazing this weekend. As for my experience, we walked into the venue on Saturday as Joel Corry was throwing down a nice set of house and techno. We made our way up the hill for our much needed dose of drum & bass from UK legend Dimension. After a little bit we made our way down the hill for the absolute house party that NITTI b2b Marten Horger were throwing down. After that, Jason Ross was a major highlight of the first day, from trance to techno, Ross showed that he can do it all. We enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Sunken Garden as VNNSA threw down before we made our way back to Wolves’ Den for AC Slater’s banging house set, and an immaculate set from Seven Lions where he threw down both his hits and some wild psy-trance. Finally we ended Night one atop the hill with Black Tiger Sex Machine, the duo threw down an insane set that featured heavy dubstep as well as some more melodic tunes to balance it out. Original Photo by Jake West for Insomniac Events We got in a tad later on Sunday (happens to the best of us on the final day), but we made it in time to see some of Pendulum’s set before the absolute highlight of the weekend; Benny Bennasi’s Sunset set. The dance music legend weaved through some deep and clubby tracks before closing his set out with some of his biggest and most beloved hits. He closed his set out with Skrillex’s iconic remix of Benassi’s hit song Cinema. The lasers and production of the stage helped to deliver an unforgettable moment for everyone there. For me, this was an iconic moment; a dance music icon delivering an indelible moment in an iconic space. From there we moved up the hill and bass was the formula for the rest of the night. I was in awe of PhaseOne’s performance, and Eptic delivered an incredible set for all the headliners who were thoroughly enjoying his performance. We stayed atop the hill for GHOSTRYDR (JOYRYDE b2b Ghastly) and enjoyed the old school rave vibes. By that time, everyone had gone down to the Wolves’ Den for Subtronics, so old school ravers were rewarded for their patience. There you have it for another successful edition of Nocturnal. I haven’t seen anything yet confirming next year, but I’d be surprised if Nocturnal didn’t return for its 29th edition at Glen Helen Regional Park. Also, Premier Parking came in clutch, you got dropped off at the camping entrance, and did not have to wait in traffic for an hour to leave the venue. 10/10 recommend. Chris Ianuzzi Tackles Melody and the Time-Space Continuum in New Tracks, ‘Distant Suns’ and ‘Wild Side’
Chris Ianuzzi has become a YEDM favorite and an example of the type of experimental electronica that fuels EDM with out EDMers even knowing about it. With a firm foot still in post punk and indie/electronic crossover, Ianuzzi is in a unique position to draw in fans of multiple genres with his well-composed, Philip Glass-style organized chaos. While most of this work is just that: a load of tinkering and technically complex composition meant to sound chaotic, Ianuzzi does sometimes step all the way in to EDM, even to the point where one can find a solid genre or two. This is the case with his new dual single, “Distant Suns” and “Wild Side.” With a actual beats and even a melody, Ianuzzi has channeled his inner raver in “Distant Suns,” the ostensible a-side of the two tracks. The track opens with a feedback-driven vintage tune-in vibe before launching into a trancy straight beat without a buildup. Sad straight beat is accompanied by a 90s rave-style melody which is sort of ambient to the beat, which, without the listener noticing, turns into a more deep techno beat before the whole thing is cut off without ceremony and switches to an industrial-soaked breakbeat. The track continues thus, with the various trance-techno-breakbeat loops starting and stopping arbitrarily and Ianuzzi’s dissonant vocals being, surprisingly, the only element that continues on a followable trajectory. “Distant Suns” is thus able to straddle EDM, post punk and experimental at once: the elements of EDM are there, but the structure is all Ianuzzi and his glorious chaos. It’s clear upon listening to “Wild Side” that in these two tracks, Ianuzzi was playing around with different percussive sounds that are sort of timey and spacey in nature. They’re present in “Distant Suns” but in “Wild Side” they comprise a significant line of music. Also with a surprising amount of perceivable structure, “Wild Side” is actually more linear than “Distant Suns,” as its running bassline drives the track while the minimal trap beat anchors it. Over, aside and around these structures, however, is the sonic equivalent of Tron superimposed over Salvador Dalí’s Persistence of Memory series with the melting clocks. While more industrial-meets-post punk than EDM, “Wild Side” is still cohesive enough to tickle the EDM fan’s fancy as well. It would be excellent at the end of a sunrise set at the end of a festival. Fans can always expect the unexpected from Chris Ianuzzi, and “Distant Suns” and “Wild Side” are no exception. With his last track prior to these being more ambient experimental, it’s nice to see this electronica mad scientist play with beat and percussion once more. “Distant Suns” and “Wild Side” are out now and available to stream on Spotify. New Artist Spotlight: Cerpintxt Reveals a New EP of ‘Hauntology’ After a Break From Production With New EP, ‘microtubule encoded memory’
For fans of experimental electronica, artists like Cerpintxt have to represent the future of this cutting edge discipline. Now located in London by way of her native Egypt, Cerpintxt’s haunted, acoustics-focused science project of a sound has been picked up not only by like-minded atmospheric, drone and visual artists and labels such as CAMP Editions, Carlos Casas, Machinefabriek and Matchess but has bled into the EDM world. Now with her new EP, microtubule encoded memory, Cerpintxt stands to unite the EDM and experimental worlds even further. EDM is almost always driven in some form by the mad scientists who innovate and push the boundaries of what’s possible in electronic music, but quite often, with the exception of artists like Noisia, Amon Tobin, Rezz, Gyrofield and Venetian Snares, EDM and experimental electronica tend to stay in their own respective camps. With her futuristic, Cyber Punk vibe, heavy concept work and meticulous compositional style, Cerpintxt is both pushing the envelope for acoustics and sound design and giving more conventional EDM artists a run for their money going on six years now. Begnning with her ATOMS EP with atmospheric house legend Stevie R. in 2018 right the way through her 2022 single, “Sedimented,” on CAMP Editions to microtubule encoded memory, sound curation as acoustic science, as concept and as evocative music . Cerpintxt’s unique sound work isn’t the only thing that led the drop of microtubule encoded memory being one of the most innovative drops of the year. She’s also very proactive when it comes to her own brand and agenda. In the two years between 2020 and 2022, Cerpintxt didn’t release much production-wise but she began performing her music live, both on multiple radio platforms, on livestreams and at multiple festivals. She also launched her own event based out of London called Boundary Condition. In the artist’s words, it’s a “an audiovisual durational immersion for the rabidly sentimental: investigating the parallelization between dark-jazz, hauntology, and musique concrète as nostalgia-centric practices.” This tagging of her event leads into the branding and vernacular of Cerpintxt. She’s very specific about the language she uses to describe her work, using terms like “hauntology” and “systematic harmonic erosion.” To describe her sound. Listening to her work, all the terms she uses are not wrong, especially when it comes to microtubule encoded memory. The work in this EP is, in fact, a study in haunting sound and in the erosion, or movement, of harmony. Made from endless sound recording loops gathered over years from locations like the pharaonic temple at Serabit El Khadim in her native Egypt, the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula, and the music of Bedouin tribes, Cerpintxt’s long, storied tracks are building, eroding and cycling sounds all at once. Her focus on acoustics not only as necessary for sound but as the sounds themselves is truly inspired. Thomas Dolby would be proud. As a concept, there’s also a political bent to Cerpintxt’s work on microtubule encoded memory, but it’s not one most artists would think of, though it ties in with all the hard graft she put into this EP. In the artist’s own words, “The hauntological element of my work explores a form of sonic activism against the weaponization of love in Egypt.” Once again, the importance is in the way she’s phrased it: no direct, easy to decipher agendas here, but rather an evocative statement that bypasses typical communication and gets to the heart of what’s important. Like the music itself, Cerpintxt wants her audience to feel the energy of what’s around them, whether sonic or otherwise, and make decisions accordingly. There’s a depth to this work that’s not just about tinkering, and that’s likely why it resonates with the EDM world. The first and third tracks on microtubule encoded memory are available now on Cerpintxt’s Bandcamp, while the elusive middle track will be released in October on cassette only. Maximono Drops Collection Of Unreleased Tracks ‘The Outtakes’ via This Ain’t Bristol
The crafty German artist/producer Maximono earned his tenure in the electronic music scene during the late 90s, meticulously honing his craft in the world of breakbeats, jungle and drum & bass. In 2015, he flipped the script to go on a genre bending crusade with his new interpretation of house music, rapidly catching the attention of tastemaker labels such as Dirtybird, This Ain’t Bristol, Sweat It Out, Confession, Insomniac and CUFF. With a masters degree in low-end theory and a minor in spaced out, wobbly leads, Maximono teamed up with fellow bass graduates and heavy hitters like Malaa, Mat.Joe, Huxley, Kevin Knapp and Marten Hørger to release critically acclaimed songs such as “Arsenic”, “Drummer Loco” and “So High”. Now, he’s back with a simmering album packed full of unreleased tracks via the esteemed imprint This Ain’t Bristol, titled ‘The Outtakes.’ In true Maximono fashion, the album is laced with trippy melodies and hypnotic grooves all across the house spectrum. New Artist Spotlight: Mel Monaco and her Band Close out the Summer With ‘Love Tides’
Mel Monaco may be new to the likes of YEDM readers, but her smooth, effortless form of jazz pop has been lighting up the airwaves and stages in her native Ontario for nearly a decade. With a bell-clear, pitch perfect voice reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, a virtuosic knowledge of jazz guitar and piano, and a fun, pop-tinged songwriting style, Monaco is much-loved both for her music and performances in her part of the world, and now with her latest single, the catchy and radio-ready “Love Tides,” it seems she’ll be exploring new waters soon. Monaco’s goal over ten years ago was to release five albums before the age of 30, which she did plus one. Now with six lounge jazz albums, a handful of singles and a number of covers under her belt, it appears that Monaco has switched gears for “Love Tides.” Normally entrenched in jazz and soul with her popular originals like “Witch Sometimes,” “Better Not Bitter” and the commemorative “30 What,” this new song has more pop added to it than previous work. It seems now that Monaco has met her goal, she’s happy to play with other genres and it definitely pays off here. “Love Tides” not only opens with a snappy disco house beat and a funky synth but also with the first vocals rapped by Monaco. It’s likely that her fans were shocked by this change, but the song is just too much of a groove not to be into it immediately. Released as an applause round and love letter to the beautiful summers in the St. Catherines/Niagara area of southern Ontario where Monaco and her band call home, it’s impossible not to call this track a feelgood hit. Not to mention it’s so technically polished that despite the beat and groove of the track, “Love Tides” is almost entirely analog. Monaco works with an amazing band who really stepped up with her vision on this track, making it feel more in the realm of Jamiroquai or P-Funk than the more soulful artists like Bill Withers and Al Green. If fans needed more proof that “Love Tides” was inspired by the Niagara/Muskoka area, Monaco has also released a video for the song which was filmed on the Hamilton, Ontario area waterfront on a yacht with a number of her bandmates. Given that she’s called this song “yacht pop,” it seems quite apropos. It also seems like they had a hell of a lot of fun filming it; if the song itself wasn’t infectious enough, the chill part vibes in the videos will make fans wish for summer to stay just a little longer. Fans of Monaco’s original soul format shouldn’t think of “Love Tides” as a departure from her style but more of a branching out. The already accomplished artist is clearly endlessly creative and diversity comes with that territory. Meanwhile, pop and house fans can now also enjoy this modern funk along with Monaco’s beautiful voice and happy spirit. With a song like this, we don’t have to abandon summer quite yet. “Love Tides” can be streamed on Spotify along with the rest of Mel Monaco’s discography.
