We thought Monday, we thought Tuesday… apparently the lineup was stuck in drafts. Coachella has announced its 2023 lineup with Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean tapped as headliners for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively. Also coming back to the desert for the first time since 2016 will be Calvin Harris, making him the biggest EDM act on the lineup, billing-wise, for the festival.
Other notable EDM acts include The Chemical Brothers and TESTPILOT on Friday, as well as Alison Wonderland’s Whyte Fang project. Saturday features the first Coachella appearance of Eric Prydz presents HOLO, as well as a rare appearance by Underworld. Saturday also features Chromeo, Mura Masa, Jaeji, and Marc Rebillet, who technically isn’t “EDM,” but we’ve claimed him nonetheless.
Sunday rounds things out with Porter Robinson, Fisher, Christ Lake, Jai Paul and Jai Wolf, Boris Brejcha, 2manydjs, Big Wild, Gordo, Cassian, and LP Giobbi, making it one of the more stacked days for dance music.
Register now for access to passes at http://coachella.com. Presale begins Friday, 1/13 at 11am PT. Very limited Weekend 1 passes remain. For your best chance at passes, look to Weekend 2.

Aside August’s rough and deep collab track with My Nu Leng called “Sahara Dub” on the fellow Bristol boys’ clandestine new label Wavelengths and a VIP of their 2020 hit “Pure X” for RAM’s 2022 annual, Mob Tactics haven’t released any new music since their War City EP in June, 2020. This isn’t all that surprising, as the pandemic either slowed or stopped production for quite a few artists, and each is taking the time needed for them to get back into the swing of things. The Mob Tactics duo also have the extra difficulty of living six thousand miles from each other. Luckily, the wait is over and 2023 is already shaping up to be a red letter year for the duo, starting with their upcoming EP, Beyond the Circus part 1.
With a style that straddles dancefloor, neurofunk and many other styles, Mob Tactics are one of those acts that can make highly technical work and unhinged, almost experimental sound design flow in a way that’s still danceable and approachable. That said, with the entre of Beyond the Circus and its frenetic pace, stark messaging and even more mad scientist sound design, fans are put on notice for this EP and its ensuing sequels: these tracks are thinkers, and they’re not couched as much in finger gun-blasting fun as previous offerings. Get those neurons firing before you step to the dancefloor, or you’ll miss a whole lot.
Starting with the EP’s title, Beyond the Circus connotes not only the dystopian madness of the pandemic but the surrounding and subsequent political, cultural and social media circuses we’ve all had to live through lo these past two years. With track names like “Murder Ball,” “Escape Room,” “Brockout” and “Blink,” the EP both points to and promises a silver lining to these crazy times. Hint: it’s the music.
If there’s one style of music out there that’s not only suited to the pre-dystopian circus that is modern society but was born of it and regularly transcends it, it’s drum & bass. Taking a genial, GenX joy in creating the sounds of chaotic evil as they do, Mob Tactics pull no punches as they launch into the spinning snare whirlwind of “Murderball.” With all its funk, chaotic, emotive melody and literal jungle sounds this track gives a distinct “bring it on” vibe.
“Brockout” continues that rough and ready with the partiest party tune on the EP, complete with ravey intro, ameny synths and an early hardcore breakbeat structure. Laid over all this, however, are some of the grimiest modern-style synths anyone’s heard in at least the last two years (coincidence)? With the perfect harmony between old school and neu neuro flavors here, it wouldn’t be surprising if RAM and Eatbrain fought over this track in some sort of A&R cage match.
The EP closes with its most hard/neuro forward track, “Blink,” but there’s also no small amount of classic funk here either. Mostly in the beat and samplings, “Blink” also calls back to those first tastes of dark-and-techstep interstitial breakdowns and stings meant to wake up the mind amidst the fast repetitive beats, listeners had better pay attention to this one; blink and you’ll miss the best parts.
Tying together the melodic “Murderball” madness of the beginning of Beyond the Circus is our YEDM premiere today, “Escape Room.” If “Murderball” is the first step beyond the circus of the weird cultural mayhem we find ourselves in, “Escape Room” is, well, the “Escape Room,” both musically and in terms of storyline. Starting off with a melodic and cinematic intro, “Escape Room” is a serious track, heavy and poignant with sinister big band synths and tortured vox scream samples, this tense wormhole of sound pushes the EP into the blissful, hedonistic party that awaits with “Brockout” and “Blink.”
The narrative within Beyond the Circus part 1 is just as strong as the music and it’s clear Mob Tactics put a lot of thought into how they wanted these tracks to be released. They certainly can be forgiven for taking their time getting their releases together, especially if they’re going to sound and feel like this. The raw power of Mob Tactics is back, and it’s likely they’ll keep taking us beyond Beyond throughout 2023.
Beyond the Circus part 1 drops this Friday, January 13 on RAM. Check Beatport to purchase.

Last year, The Chainsmokers released their fourth studio album, So Far So Good, along with an album of lofi remixes. While the album has gotten a bit better with consequent listens, it still remains one of our least favorite bodies of work the duo has released.
That being said, new year new me, The Chainsmokers are set to release their next single, “Make Me Feel” with Cheyenne Giles this Friday. Set for release on Tiësto’s Musical Freedom Records, the single is a far cry from either the pop ballads of the last couple albums or the frat party bangers the group was releasing during their come-up.
You can find some re-mixes online ahead of the official release, but check back Friday to hear the finished version.

This past weekend saw the release of Skrillex’s latest single, “Way Back” with PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd, but not before he, Fred again.., and Four Tet descended upon Electric Ballroom in London four a nearly 4-hour set showing off new material and of course their latest single “Rumble,” for which Flowdan of course made an appearance.
Plenty of new music was showcased at the event, as well, not least of all this insane collaboration between Skrillex, Missy Elliott, and Mr. Oizo. If the “This the kinda beat that go…” sample is familiar to you, you might remember it from “Boy Oh Boy” by Diplo and GTA, released in 2013. Even that, however, was a sample of Missy Elliott’s iconic song “Work It” from 2002.
There might be a bit of irony to be found in the fact that the last big sample of the song in EDM was by Diplo, who once worked with Skrillex in Jack Ü, and now Skrillex himself is getting the real deal to revive the sample in his own song. But it’s probably nothing but coincidence as the song is really that big, the producers’ past work probably never came into the equation. (Missy also remixed the Jack Ü hit “Take Ü There.”)
Based on how much this particular single is being, for lack of a better word, singled out from the London set, this one could be the next that drops from Skrill’s big bag of demos. We’ll have to wait and see, but you can hear it dropped live below.

Last year, ACRAZE finally dropped “Believe” with Goodboys, his anticipated follow-up to the global smash hit, “Do It To It.” As we wrote in our review when it finally released, we were pleased that he avoided the “replicated lightning in a bottle” route and went a bit more melodic rather than club-focused.
Luckily, if you were missing the club sound, Galantis has a new remix out today exactly for that purpose. The energy is turned up to 10 and the vocals from Goodboys shine even brighter with the poppy synths and bouncy rhythm.

It’s been a hell of a week for Skrillex, starting things off Sunday with a huge teaser showing off around a dozen unreleased tracks and teasing what is more than likely two albums coming in 2023. Just a couple days later, he finally released the highly-anticipated “Rumble” with Fred again.. and Flowdan. In the same breath, he announced yet another single would be dropping the next day (yesterday), “Way Back” with PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd.
After previewing the song on his Instagram this week, “Way Back” featuring PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd has now become available for the public to hear. With all three artists having garnered a reputation for shattering musical expectations within their own genres, it only makes sense that this collaboration is as eclectic and entertaining as previous work that their fan bases have come to love.
Sonically, it shares some similarities with his collaboration on 100 gecs’ “Torture Me” in the way the rhythm and vocals are produced. It’s sort of drum & bass means chiptune with the unique Skrillex flair that you can especially hear in the drums.

One of the best elements of melodic bass is the emotions that it translates to the listener. Whether it’s nostalgia or euphoria, it’s always a special listening experience.
Today, rising artists Rescve, Asher Shashaty, and Miyiko have teamed up for an epic single that beautifully fuses the best parts of all involved into a single cohesive feature titled, “Urban Forest”. For Asher Shashaty, this is the first of three singles which is leading to the drop of his debut album he’s promptly titled ‘Astral Spring’.

Together, these three make a incredible team, perfectly blending a powerful vocal performance from Miyiko overtop a beautiful back beat and swirling, uplifting melodies provided by Rescve and Asher Shashaty. One artist we are keeping our eye on this year is BINGEWATCH, who’s been making waves all over the dance music scene lately. Since his start, he’s landed singles on elite labels such as Hau5trap and Mixmash, garnering support from superstars like Deadmau5, Martin Garrix, and plenty more. Whether through his ‘Bingetape’ mixtape series – that’s even earned the acclaim of Chris Lake – or his series of underground parties through his Blind Tiger imprint, BINGEWATCH has proven his success in multiple facets of the industry and shows no signs of slowing down.
He kicked off 2023 with a bang, returning to Hood Politics for his highly anticipated ‘Bingetape Vol 3.‘ that encompasses four sizzling tech house tunes, releasing each song for free from Monday – Thursday. You can’t go wrong with any of the songs, but our favorite is “Party People”, it gives this electrifying feel of being a boiler room type party with good people around as BINGE fuels the song with smooth vocal cuts and a insatiable groove.

Hood Politics Records · Hood Politics Presents: BINGETAPE Volume. 3 Capping off this week is the first single from BINGEWATCH, “IDK WHAT TIME IT IS“, and it’s a scorcher. He masterfully blends bass frequencies and a trippy vocal sample to create what is a heart pumping single we can’t get enough of.
Led by DJ Susan, Hood Politics has earned a reputation for being the home for the finest of the underground. Whether they are releasing mixtapes, singles, or remixes, Hood Politics has become the go-to spot to discover the best budding talent in electronic music. Most notably, they’ve built a global “family” of both fans and rising artists over the years (John Summit, Max Styler, etc), making BINGEWATCH’s return to Hood Politics all the more special for both himself and fans alike.

The day is finally here, when the most anticipated track of 2023 has finally arrived. It might not be yours, particularly, but by and large the collaboration between the iconic Skrillex, the trailblazing Fred again.., and talented Flowdan is at the top of more people’s collective lists than anything else this year. Of course, we’re still pretty early in the calendar but that’s no reason to diminish the hype for “Rumble.”
After teasing two albums this year just earlier this week, Skrillex is starting off the year powerfully releasing “Rumble,” taking heavy influence from garage and grime with the help of his collaborators. The bass is impeccable, the vocal chops are classic Skrillex, and the production is some of the most perfect work we’ve heard in recent years.
It’s a little disappointing the song is less than two-and-a-half minutes long, but that appears to be an overall trend for a lot of music lately as algorithms promote shorter pieces of content. That being said, it also takes less time to repeat the song over and over.

deadmau5 isn’t wasting any time heading into the new year with new music, as We Are Friends 11 is expected pretty soon. The latest single on the compilation comes from the head honcho, following “XYZ” released in the middle of last year. (This compilation has been a long time coming, huh?)
The mau5trap leader isn’t foreign to hip hop, having collaborated with his favorite SHOTTY HORROH on a few occasions. This time he teams up with YTCracker. The match seems odd, looking at YT’s social media, but it comes into focus when you look at his bio —
“YTCracker is a formerly notorious computer hacker who stopped hacking everyone’s gibson and started rapping about it instead. Recognized as a forefather of the ‘nerdcore’ genre[…]” Now it makes more sense.
Style-wise, the collaboration bears a lot of sonic and rhythmic similarities to his work with SHOTTY, but it still bears that same sort of mau5 nerdiness we’ve come to love.

We’re officially in 2023. All the end of year lists are done and new ones are expected… “What to expect,” “What to look out for,” “What we still don’t have…” In the same fashion, DJs and producers are already playing out some of their big new tracks for this year with the slew of New Year’s Eve & Day events all across the country this past weekend.
Rezz played at Hijinx in Philadelphia this past weekend on the 30th, so not quite NYE but it still qualifies as a NYE festival. During her set, she played out an unreleased collaboration with Quackson and Wreckno that has us incredibly excited. Rezz and Quackson have similar styles insofar as they both play within the spectrum of midtempo, and Wreckno’s unique bass style and composition definitely have an effect with the final track, as well.

In November 2019, following a GRAMMY nomination for “Midnight Hour” with Boys Noize featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Skrillex took to social media to express his thanks to everyone who supported the track, stating “we would not be here if it wasn’t for you.” But he didn’t end the video there, as he continued, saying, “I’m just in the studio finishing my albums.”
Then, in May 2022, he sadly pulled off the lineups of Movement Detroit and Tampa Sunset Music Festival. Once again, in his announcement, he managed to slip in that significant plural: “albums.”
Both posts have since been scrubbed from social media and we’ve been patiently waiting for any news on a new album since he released Recess in 2015.
Today, he shared a 42-second teaser absolutely filled with clips of music. Some, we’ve heard before, others are a bit more nebulous in identity. According to /u/ddarion on Reddit, the IDs could be as follows:
Skrillex ft. Starrah – El dorado ID
Skrillex w/ Fred Again and Flowdan – Rumble
Skrillex w/ Fred Again – Stay with me
Skrillex w/ Sleepnet and Joker – Tears ID
Skrillex w/ Kid Cudi – Moving here ID
Skillex w/ Bladee – Real Spring
Skrillex w/? – Xena ID
Skrillex w/ Porter/Virtual self? – ID
Skrillex w/ Trippe Redd – Way Back ID
Skrillex w/ Beam – Selecta
Skrillex w/? – Inhale/Exhale
Skrillex w/ Missy Elliot – Party People

Skrillex himself even shared the Dropbox link to the pure audio from the teaser on his own subreddit.

JS aka The Best offers a new way to approach percussion on Bossa Nova. Continuing his study of sound already shown in his countless commercial works, he takes on percussion in an emotionally charged fashion. Far away from the idea of a time-keeping device, he infuses the concept with the utmost of emotion. The result of this strategy is something that truly touches the soul. All of his pieces have this similar cadence, a looseness that is liberating. By refusing to pigeonhole himself into one style, the tracks flow one to the other in a lyrical fashion.
Vocals add to this heightened state. Quite liberating the approach does draw from his own background, one that includes his classical percussion training. The movement towards a more organic sound within electronic music is a relatively recent one and most overseas with the likes of the Moritz von Oswald Trio and Elektro Guzzi. By keeping the work within a more pop-oriented context, however, JS aka The Best sidesteps the trend of the experimental for something a bit more accessible.
Good headphones and good speakers are a must for the way that JS aka The Best sculpts the sound deserves to be heard in the highest fidelity. Bossa Nova stuns and shows off JS aka The Best’s exquisitely crafted layers.

Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell make up Swedish House Mafia, but it’s not the only group these three are in. Axwell and Ingrosso teamed up for years and were incredibly successful, but the project between Ingrosso and Angello, called Buy Now, is objectively lesser known.
As a duo, the two put out a single in 2008 and then went silent. (Tracks under Buy Now and Peter Brocks on Spotify are incorrectly attributed, and Buy Now actually refers to Buy Now Records.) However, as 2022 draws to a close, they’ve risen from the depths for an A/B release with PARISI, “Church” and “Speak Up.”
“We Haven’t released ‘Buy Now’ music since 2008 so 2022 felt like a good start to fuck around in the studio and put out music,” Angello said on Twitter. “First we did the collaboration with Salvatore Ganacci and today we let you take part of a long night at Church studios in London with our brothers Parisi!”
