Greek-Australian artist Vassy has made history by becoming the first woman to win the EDMA ICON Award. Vassy expressed her disbelief and gratitude upon receiving the award, noting that she hails from a small remote town in Australia and never imagined achieving such a prestigious honor.
As a singer/songwriter in the male-dominated dance industry, Vassy is proud to have remained true to herself and to have shown other artists and women that authenticity is key to success. She hopes that her win will inspire others to pursue their dreams and break down barriers in the music industry.
Vassy’s unique approach to dance music has earned her a devoted fan base and critical acclaim. Her dedication to authenticity and individuality has made her a role model for aspiring artists around the world. With this historic win, Vassy has cemented her status as a true icon in the dance music community.
We had the chance to catch up with her and ask those all important questions after receiving the EDMA award in Miami.

How does it feel to be the first woman recognised with the EDMA Icon award?
It’s truly such an honour to be the first woman to win the ICON award. I am proud to lead the path for many other women out there and artists in the Dance space.
I can’t believe that a Greek Aussie girl all the way from a little remote town in Australia, comes to America to pursue her dreams and becomes a Music Icon
I am proud that I can show other artists and women that you don’t have to be a guy or a DJ and if you remain authentic to yourself it will pay off.
In such a male dominated genre, and DJ Driven industry as an artist in the dance space I stayed authentic to myself, so to receive the 2023 ICON Award being the first woman to do so just reinforces how important it is, to be true to yourself.

Who were the ICONs that you looked up to when starting your journey?
Well I looked up to my Mother, Grandmother and Sister, the strong women around me, who shaped me to be the person I am today. And of course my Father he was my true No1 Icon, bless his soul we lost him 20 years ago but he taught me the importance of hard work. In terms of music I was inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Tina Turner, Erykah Badu, Crystal Waters, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaught, Shirley Horn, Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Eartha Kit and so on..…….these Ladies were iconic to me…..
When was your earliest experience or memory of electronic music?
Well technically I refer to electronic music back in the 90s because we were listening to a lot of house music growing up my sister and brother we’re older and they used to have house music on all the time back then artists like Crystal Waters was a fav, Soul to Soul, Robyn S, De La Soul, CmC Music Factory, Black Box, Nomad, KLF…..I mean the old skool dance house acts….
When did you realise you were destined to have such a successful career in music? What was the momentum shifting point?
I think I realised after my father had passed away a friend of mine had submitted a couple of my very first songs I had ever written. I was very depressed at the time but one of those songs got picked up and it became song of the year and played all across the nation in Australia it landed me a major recording contract with universal records. When I left Australia and moved to America I started all over again because no one knew me.
In America it was when I got my very first number one on the Billboard Dance Charts I was the first Australian to get a #1 with a solo record ever in history. That was a monumental moment in my career and then from there I had my multi platinum record I wrote and performed on with David GUETTA and Showtek which exploded and has since had over 2 billion streams but at the time when it came out I just remember thinking wow this is wild everyone is singing the song all over the world a song that I had written in less than an hour….who would have known. I also had other highlights like winning prestigious music awards over the years and performing main iconic stages with Music Icons such as Tiesto…., these moments really made me feel like wow my art is making an impact on people globally.

What are the crucial factors outside of music to you to be staying so consistent and still writing and creating new fresh music all the time?
I think the crucial factors outside of music would be a balanced personal life and family life and healthy life. Focusing on your body and health and mental health. For me a few years ago I had some health things that came up and although they took my time away from MUSIC it was a blessing in disguise because it has truly taught me to step away from the industry and focus on the really important things. Without your health you have nothing and without your family’s health you have nothing.
And I love the outdoors and nature and I try to do a lot of that and that helps keep me calm and grounded and as a result give me a fresh mind feeling inspired. Many years ago I used to go hard in the studio every day but now I balance it all out. I do not want to be in the studio all the time so that I can come into the studio all motivated with fresh ideas.
Is the motivation different now to when you started? What motivates you today?
Yes I’m definitely motivated by different things today than I was years ago. I want peace and a balanced life surrounded by positive people only around me. I guess I don’t have to work the way I used to so I’m able to pick and choose what I’d like to work on now and take my time and really enjoy the art of making my songs.

What can fans expect from Vassy in 2023?
Lots of new music and songs that are definitely authentically VASSY songs. I have shows coming up but for me 2023 is all about the music and the fans.
What would your advice be for future women icons out there?
Be yourself, be true to who you are, don’t be afraid or ashamed to be a woman, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or don’t want. Be a BOSS but not Bossy. Surround yourself with people who respect you and believe in you.
What is your message for artists and creatives out there on receiving this award?
Believe in yourself and Be true to who you are because Rejections are Redirections so stick to Plan A … no need for plan B, if you have one you have already compromised plan A.

There is something special about bass music, which not only resonates with the mind, but also connects with the body. The human brain involuntarily picks the lower bass rhythm while the body moves through the low-frequency vibrations. Bass music is unique in its melody and is certainly not for everyone. MY BAD, a prominent EDM producer and musician, has been setting new trends in bass music for quite some time. His recent release “All In” will probably set a new benchmark in the bass music scene among EDM lovers.
MY BAD was only 15 when he started listening to dubstep and attending raves. He instantly felt connected to music and knew what he wanted to do for a living. To accomplish his dream career, MY BAD started learning music production, and in a year, he was making music. He was just a 16-year-old from Colorado with big dreams when he officially started producing music and DJing. As he immersed himself in bass music, he gained recognition in the industry. MY BAD’s career took off after he moved to Los Angeles, California. He was flooded with offers of collaboration projects, and he explored each of them to cement his position in the industry. He teamed up with ARIUS in “Crazy For Falling”, which surpassed 3 million streams on Spotify and has over 500K views on YouTube. He self-released the “Delusions EP” in June 2021, which gained
more than 1.5 million streams on Spotify in the first couple of months. The song is now listed on multiple editorial playlists. MY BAD has made his mark in Denver, the bass capital of the world. He has held residencies at famous clubs across Denver, San Diego, and Los Angeles. He played many DJ sets and released a few EPs with esteemed music labels like Create, Tribal Trap, and Subsidia. MY BAD loves collaborating with other artists on his originals because he believes a vocalist, singer, or rapper can elevate his music to the next level. For him, it’s a reason people come back to listen to his tracks. In this latest EP, “All In”, he collaborated with his good friend, Sam Mailloux, who he has worked with in the past.

As MY BAD describes, “I really enjoy making music with other people.” “All In” is likely to be a unique approach to bass music that will leave people mesmerized and craving for more. It will have electrically amplified melodies combined with low-pitched notes to create a bassline that will make people groove. MY BAD wanted this latest EP to set a new standard among his fans, which is why he took a hiatus to work more dedicatedly on this project. He shares, “I took a step back last year and really dived into my roots on why I decided to do this in the first place, and that’s how this name and EP came to be.
I realized that I hold so much music back trying to perfect it, and it’s better off being out and into the world.” Describing the concept behind “All In”, MY BAD says, “I grew up listening to dubstep and bass music and wanted to showcase my spin on the OG sound that I loved with a touch of 2023 style.” “All In” is likely to be a milestone in MY BAD’s career, paving his way to more valuable collaborations and music tours worldwide. He believes this EP will be the next anthem at rave parties and EDM clubs, taking his voice to the world.

Thus concludes Ultra Music Festival… another year, another weekend full of incredible sets, even if you’re sitting from the comfort of your own home. While tens of thousands descended upon South Beach in Miami for a weekend of fun and sun, and afterparties, too, millions sat at home watching the UMF Live Stream all weekend.
Dozens of artists graced our digital devices, including many headliners like Martin Garrix, HARDWELL, David Guetta, and Marshmello. Ultra has been great this year about handing over footage of sets to artists straight away, with most performers (who had the opportunity) uploading their full set the following morning. Some either haven’t uploaded their sets, or won’t, like Zedd and Swedish House Mafia, but we may see them soon still.

This is your 3rd Miami Sampler EP. What started this in the first place? What stands out to you on this EP?
It’s our Super Bowl at this point.  Coming up as a producer I noticed a lot of labels would do this and it was always such a cool concept. Coinciding dance music with arguably the best week in dance music just makes sense.  So I followed suit.  I love that each year the EP gets better and better with more and more talented artists hoping on the Swerve roster.  This year especially: every single track is a mainstage hit.
How do you decide which tracks to select for the sampler?
Every year I try and include tracks that encapsulate the vibe of Swerve.  The Miami Sampler’s are capstone projects that showcase our Mainstage sound.  Demos flood in on the daily and about 5-6 months out I’ll start putting some to the side for this specific project that I know will be perfect fits.
What are some of your goals this year with Swerve Collective? How have you seen growth over the past few years?
I’m currently deployed right now, so for the rest of the year the focus is on building a fan base through advertisements, various engagement events like contests and sample pack drops, and further developing our promotion listings.  Less focus on time-consuming release planning and more focus on engagement.  I think Swerve is at a point now where we have a solid roster of talented artists and our discography really shows that.  It’s time to really start putting Swerve on the map.

ILLENIUM’s fifth studio album, ILLENIUM, is just a little more than a month away now. As we approach the official release, he’s released the fifth single today, “With All My Heart” featuring JVKE. He also confirmed on Reddit that this is the final single before the album.
Overall, the song is pretty simple and easily digestible, making it perfect to pitch to radio.
“This song is pure ear candy to me,” ILLENIUM says of the track. “JVKE’s voice is incredibly powerful, the lyrics really hit, and the vocal chops make it epic and vibey. So stoked on how this record turned out.”
JVKE also shared some thoughts on the collab, stating: “I’m a big illenium fan. When he reached out and asked to do a record together I couldn’t say no. Hoping the world likes it as much as I do.”
“With All My Heart” arrives on the heels of ILLENIUM’s recent single “Insanity” feat. American Teeth. Prior to that, he reached #1 at US dance radio with the Teddy Swims-assisted “All That Really Matters” and rolled out “Luv Me A Little” featuring Nina Nesbitt and “From The Ashes” featuring Skylar Grey. The tracks will all feature on ILLENIUM’s forthcoming self-titled album, to be released April 28. Pre-save it HERE.

Last week, an interview with M83 by Consequence went semi-viral after he shared his thoughts on the EDM community and respective DJs who regularly play his 2011 hit “Midnight City” in their sets.
To refresh your memory, he said, “For me, the struggle with being a successful artist with that album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and especially with that track, ‘Midnight City’, is that all of a sudden, I had this huge EDM following. EDM is probably one of the styles of music that I hate the most. All of a sudden, I have these bro EDM DJs playing my music, and I just can’t even care less. Sometimes I wish that I could erase that fan base but I don’t think it’s possible to do that.”

Yesterday, he shared a follow up on Instagram stories addressing the interview and the backlash he’s been receiving for his words. “I do not hate the EDM community, no!” he says. “I’m forever grateful for the love and support. I’m French and my English sucks so sometimes the journalist has to figure it out… and it often comes up wrong. Apologies for that.”
As part of the community, I appreciate the apology. However, the then doubles down on DJs, “What I do hate though is that community of DJs using my songs without any permission, waving their hands at the crowd and doing nothing but pressing a f****** button. This I truly find disrespectful and gross. […] When you use someone’s music maybe you can ask first, no?”
Part of M83’s hate for DJs playing his music appears to be a gross misunderstanding of how rights management and royalties work. Festivals, venues, even small bars and restaurants pay license fees to organizations like BMI and ASCAP who handle, among other things, performance royalties for artists. By holding these licenses, the original artists get paid for their work. No DJ has to ask to play a song (in the vast majority of circumstances), especially in an establishment or setting that holds one of these licenses.
“If I was a DJ playing in front of a huge audience I would like to ask before doing anything .. I would be too scared to offend artists,” he continues. “But maybe I live in a fantasy world … the story of my life.”
From an outside perspective, it’s hard to believe he doesn’t understand when French DJs like David Guetta, Daft Punk, Madeon, DJ Snake, Kavinsky, even legends like Laurent Garnier, have surely been in his sphere of observation at some point. But we also just don’t know. Hopefully this experience will be an educational moment for him as he tours his new album.

Chicago native Matt Sherman, aka Sherm, has created an impressive presence both in Chicago and beyond. He’s built one of the largest electronic music podcasts from the ground up – Sherm In The Booth – and his versatile talents both DJing and as an artist have earned him coveted slots at North Coast Music Festival, Lollapalooza afterparties, while also supporting superstar touring acts like Galantis, John Summit and Armin Van Buuren.
Brazilian DJ/Producer Rafael Manga has garnered quite the buzz as well, landing releases on coveted labels such as Low Ceiling, Hood Politics, Loulou Records and even been supported by the likes of Joel Corry and Malaa. He has an innate ability to seamlessly blend house and tech house elements together in a way that leaves the listener spellbound and ready to dance at the same time.
Now, Sherm and Rafael Manga have teamed up for a whopping two track EP via Hood Politics, ‘Can’t Stop’, just in time for the weekend. The title track is fused with different elements from both Rafael and Sherm’s signature style – that low end, bumping Brazilian bass combined with Sherm’s colorful techniques of call and response. Battle tested on dance floors and approved by professionals, it’s no secret that this track HITS!
Rafael Manga also supplies the second track of the EP with a club banger titled “Ha-Tata” – there is no such thing as a B side on Hood Poli and this track proves that once again.
‘Can’t Stop’ EP is the culmination of a string of remixes and edits that Sherm has released this week, including fresh flip with CHAN of Will Smith’s classic, “Miami”, a compelling remix with Spekter of Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina’s “Stereo Love”, and a collab with another burgeoning artist aboywithabag titled “Sexy Lady”.

Control Freak and Nvadrz came swinging with their long-awaited second collaboration “Self Righteous.” From the large anthemic horns to the destructive baselines, there’s no denying this attitude driven track is a call for utter obliteration.
The record is an absolute banger of a song with a large anthemic buildup and glitchy and chaotic drop. As the record continues the emotion in the track is taken drastically in a new direction. Take a listen for yourself. See what Nvadrz and Control Freak had to say about their new single:
“Self Righteous has been a staple track in all my sets for the past year and a half, it’s the track that always gets the loudest reaction. After being asked about it since, I am happy we can finally share it with everyone. Control Freak said I have been opening my sets with this record for the last year and a half and it gets a sick reaction almost every time. I always have a lot of fun writing tracks with NVADRZ because I feel our individual styles compliment each other so well! Aside from him being one of my close friends, he’s easily one of my favorite upcoming artists. So many people have been patiently waiting and asking for this track, and we are both so stoked to finally put this one out!”
