Volunteers in Ukraine organise ‘rave’ clean-up parties

The Russian invasion of Ukraine officially began in February this year, and it has since caused political strife across the world. And yet, at least presented outwardly, the Ukrainian people have seemed incredibly resilient. Lately, the citizens have been organizing clean-up raves to clear out sections of rubble in the cities caused by bombings.


Euronews reports:
“We came here and wanted to support people who survived after the Russian occupation, explained Tatyana Byrianova, a volunteer with Ukraine’s Repair Together organisation.
“In Kyiv it was a normal situation, but here it was really awful. People left their homes, and their houses were broken, a lot of houses were ruined,” she said.
“We wanted to help them rebuild, fix their houses and clean the territory.”
While most of the volunteers are local, many have traveled from other countries including Portugal, the United States, and Germany.

New Artist Spotlight: Prepare for the Sonic Storm that is Combinator [Video]

Combinator is certainly out to combine a lot of stuff in his latest EP re//combinator, released in June. An actual tornado of whip-fast D&B/industrial snares, analog metal blast beat drums, virtuosic vocals and a surprising dose of slap bass, this rock polisher of a ninth release from the Seattle-based solo project of Sean Fairchild has produced some unlikely gems. We just have to make sense of them.
It’s clear from previous releases by Fairchild as Combinator that, despite being a multi-instrumentalist, his base is bass. That would explain the Seinfeld-meets-Les Claypool-style funk bass work, and it’s as good a string to pull as any to start unraveling the tech of re//combinator. Combining elements of analog instrumentalism such as said slap-and-pop bass, metal drumlines and thrash guitars with digital elements like mod-produced drum & bass snares, ambient melodics, vocoder manipulation et all in this format seems to be fairly new to Combinator, but he’s been gearing up to it (pardon the pun).
Combinator actually started out as a more traditional funk/rock fusion band. 2013’s Vice & Passion EP is a straight up and down studio release and subsequent releases were thus until the 2020 single, “Juggernaut.” A Primus-eque love letter to his beloved bass mixed with Zappa-style chaotic jam band vibes, “Juggernaut” seems to be the turning point at which Fairchild released his inner experimental composer/performer. There was clearly no going back from there.
“Juggernaut” was also the first track from Combinator to have programmed drums – mostly semi-ameny snares – along with the analog, but it becomes really obvious and EDM-mergy with the track following, “Can’t Pretend to Know.” The first sniff of indie-style vox hits here as well, along with melodic six-string bass work and some ambient harmony programming. Combinator’s style is forming with this track, and seriously ramps up with “Eargoggle Fodder,” which released November that same year with, for the first time, an electronic base melody which winds around the funk bass, more indie (although minimal) Maynard-like vocals and even the hints of Zappa again, but this time much more composed.
Looking at these lead-in tracks, fans can now see that the ear hurricane that is re//combinator didn’t just come from a jam session between a skilled bassist and electronic producer on ketamine, though one might wonder, especially in the case of the “Respira” mixes. In fact, re//combinator is a progression, or a re-combining of all the musical elements Fairchild has loved in his musical career. The first two tracks, “Guest In Your Own Skin” and the lyrically COVID-inspired “Things that Should Be” pick up where “Juggernaut” and “Eargoggle Fodder” left off, with shades of industrial drums weaving in with the D&B snares and more Tool-like verses complimenting the shockingly complex bass work.
After the relative (though now followable, composition-wise) chaos of the first two tracks, the third is possibly an even bigger surprise than said chaotic tracks: a remix/cover of Imogen Heap‘s wildly popular and, through no fault of her own, TikTok famous song, “Hide and Seek.” We only mention TikTok becuase that famous version is also a remix, and Combinator’s treatment of the track is a bit closer to the original. Fans might not even recognize it as such.
Stuffed with even more distorted vocoder than the original, it almost sounds like Fairchild decompressed and then played it backwards while adding some bass flourishes. His actual process wasn’t far off:
The result is a surprisingly delicate comedown off the first two tracks and an entrée into the next part of Fairchild’s experiments in sound. “Cartoon Character Child” is as ambient as we’ve seen Combinator get, as it feels like a dream sequence from Adventure Time. Weird and experimental as the other tracks, this ambient segue into the full-on EDM of the rest of the EP (save bonus track “Through the Fog”).
Collaboration has always been an important part of Combinator, and Fairchild worked with other musicians on the final tracks of re//combinator as well as on “Things that Should Be” (the trap beat was supplied by Philip “Godcloud” Coleman). Well-known video game and cinematic sound designer Jesse Holt created the production the “Respira” club mix and chill mixes. Both mixes are technically chill, especially in relation to the beginning of the EP, with house beats at different tempos and sort of sunrise set ambient vibes.
For EP closer “Through the Fog,” Fairchild teamed up with former bandmate drummer Isaac Chirino, and it sort of takes listeners full circle, back to Combinator’s funky and jazzy roots. With this closing, despite the progression witnessed in re//combinator, the audience is left wondering: will Combinator continue in the more ambient arena? Or is there to be more chaos? Is he going back to funk? It’s up to him to decide, and if re//combinator has taught us anything, artists have the right to re-style, re-work and re-combine their music as they see fit.

Coming August 12 on Seven Lions’ Ophelia Records, the remix pack features scene-paving tastemakers like Moore Kismet and Ray Volpe to bass head favorites Champagne Drip and Hairitage all the way to melodic dance acts Far Out and Xavi and to niche sound design experts Teddy Killerz and Automhate. These trance, drum & bass, trap, dubstep, and house versions of the originals ensure the album tunes hit all festival stages and corners of the dance scene.
The EMBRACE REANIMATED announcement comes with the release of Moore Kismet’s genre morphing remix of “Don’t Look Back,” which itself comes soon after the release of their own debut album, UNIVERSE. They debuted the bouncy trap-infused track at their first EDC Vegas performance closing out Circuit Grounds this May to much fanfare.

Monster Energy Up & Up College Festival Series Announces Dom Dolla as Fall 2022 Headliner

The Monster Energy Up & Up concept is like the Final Four of College Music Festivals. Up & Up ambassador teams rally their student bodies in an intense 48-hour campaign to generate the most ticket pre-sales to a festival that they will co-produce — but only if their school wins. (The festival only processes credit cards from the winning schools.)
This year, Up & Up has announced Australian artist Dom Dolla as their Fall 2022 headliner. Student ambassador teams representing more than 50 U.S. colleges will lead over-the-top marketing and influencer campaigns to rally their school to buy pre-sale tickets with no date or location to earn the opportunity to produce a festival with Dom Dolla. Only the top four schools will win.
“I regularly get requests to play amazing college parties, I’ve come to learn there are a lot of colleges and only so much time” said Dom. “So, I’ve teamed up with the Monster Energy Up & Up Festival, they will be giving 4 colleges the opportunity to promote their own festival with yours truly as the headliner…this is going to be mental.”
Once the competition is over, the winning colleges work with Up & Up producers to bring Dom Dolla to a nearby venue location. The national competition kicks off on September 13th at 4 p.m. EST. The four winning festivals will take place in October and November.
“Joining up and up has been extremely vital in expanding my knowledge of the music industry and building practical skills that I can apply in my work,” says Asia Kurtalic, senior, and 2x winner from University of Virginia. “Living in a smaller town like Charlottesville makes it difficult to expand networks and keep pace with other individuals pursuing similar career paths. Up and Up has granted me tangible experiences that have made me stand out as a candidate for both my tour management positions as well as my current internship at Warner Music Group.”

What So Not Shares New Single, Reveals Tracklist For Next Album “Anomaly”

It’s been four years since What So Not’s debut album, Not All The Beautiful Things, but fans won’t have to wait much longer for album #2. With today’s release of “As One” with Herizen, What So Not has revealed his next album, Anomaly, is officially out September 16.
WSN enlightens, “For some time, this song was just an iPhone recording of the two of us riffing in the house one day. Me on an OP1 synth & Herizen humming melodies. I later showed the recording to DUSKUS and we quickly fleshed out a tune pretty close to what you hear today. The wonky saw synths on the drop really encapsulate the emotion of this record for me. So euphoric but most of all fun.”
Sharing the album tracklist today, What So Not reveals the 11 tracks that will make up Anomaly and delivers (in spades) on the anticipated ton of top shelf collabs.

Seven Lions Announces His Debut Album (At Last) Out October, “Beyond The Veil”

For the past decade, Seven Lions has been creating incredible music and releasing as much of it as possible to fans with intricate stories and themes behind them. Now, finally, his debut album is coming — Beyond the Veil is out October 21.
The announcement was made today via social media announcing the title and release date with a beautiful instrumental to accompany it, perhaps a clip of the first single?
With a little less than three months to go until release, we could see anywhere from 3-5 singles in the meantime. For now, keep an eye on Seven Lions’ socials to be the first to know about new music and, inevitably, the accompanying album tour.

Riot Ten and SAYNYNAME launch BLOODSPORT project, release first single, “Loco”

As far as bass artists that like to go hard in their sets, Riot Ten and SAYMYNAME are among the top. (Trust, there are plenty.) But these two have finally decided to combine their talents and create a new project called BLOODSPORT — which, if that isn’t already evocative enough for you, their first single should be.
“Loco” dropped last Friday and it’s a massive ball of energy right off the rip.

As the title implies, the track has been causing quite a stir on the global bass music scene with fans going absolutely crazy for the hardstyle monstrosity. Aggressive kicks and a heavy bassline combine with SAYMYNAME’S inimitable vocal delivery to create a skin tingling hype this festival season.

New Artist Spotlight: Jazz Pianist Mark ‘Cos’ Tries His Hand at Progressive Rock/Electronica Fusion

With the vocals of Chris Cornell, the synths of the Starland Vocal Band and a composition style the like of Yes, pianist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Costoso’s style could be seen as a mixed back to say the least, especially when you throw in his jazz background. It’s an interesting way in which Cos deigns to mix all these styles; progressive rock, adult contempo and electronica don’t always make the best of bedfellows. With his third album, Grace, however, Cos seems to have found his stride.
It seems to have been a significant learning curve for Costoso, a lifelong musician who began studying jazz piano at age 13, to get to that unique blend of sound. A clear progressive and hard rock fan from his first album, 2002’s The Turning Around. With a heavy influence from the likes of Kansas, Yes and Utopia’s Todd Rundgren, this album was almost all rock, with only a few peeks of piano or keys.
Once the first solo album was out for Costoso, he worked on other projects but in 2016 decided that working with bands was more frustrating than rewarding and took on solo producing with even more gusto, releasing the semi-self-titled Cos in September of that year. Now lit up even more with his virtuosic piano style, Costosos’s style became much more jazz-focused and melodic. Tracks like “Mountain or Rope” are so jazzy and fluid, in fact, they could be mistaken for Steely Dan or Michael McDonald. This style clearly suits Costoso, but it’s just as clearly not the whole story.
Cos seemed to be a bit of a turning point for Costoso, as it not only contained a wider range of styles but brought out his experimental side. He didn’t have to be just one thing, and the experimental itch was certainly there in this second album, as well as the first lashings of electronic production. Now with Grace, released in late 2021, it seems Costoso has found a way to merge all his musical loves.
From the first bars of the nine-minute epic opening track “The Greatest Gift,” it’s clear Cos has fund a way to lay all his compositions in the right place. Anchored in his first love progressive rock, Grace explores jazz, rock, theatrical production, loads of different types of synths and electronica, both in the sound design and the foregrounds of each track.  With “The Greatest Gift” containing clear nods to the likes of Jethro Tull and Yes, second track is a merging of 80s synth pop and these progressive greats via layers and layers of creative vintage synth work.
From the all-piano title track and more experiments in merging 60s and 70s prog rock with 80s new wave, Grace moves surprisingly into modern-era progressive metal/nu metal with all its lush production and intensity with the Resurrection series of tracks. With an intense vocal contribution by an unknown female vocalist, fans of Evanessence especially will enjoy these tracks.
Another big change worth noting that makes a big difference in Grace is Costoso’s vocals. He seems to have found a texture and timbre that works for him in this album, going more raspy and soft in most of the tracks rather than belting everything to the rafters. The effect is more of a connection between the music and the vocal melody, as well as a more emotive effect for the audience. This is handy in ballad-style tracks like “Gina,” or jazzy numbers like “Salt Hay” where Costoso’s voice takes on a sort of Van Halen-era David Lee Roth quality but also in tracks with sharper synths like “Wanderlust,” where a gravely, Peter Gabriel or Chris Cornell-style vocal brings a nice contrasting texture to the sound. It’s composition decisions like this which make Grace stand apart as a progression from Cos’s previous albums.
With his style clearly still evolving, Grace seems to be the release where Costoso as Cos has really found his sound, especially compositionally. Putting together jazz, prog rock, electronica and more has got to be one tough balancing act, but in this seminal album, it seems Cos is now walking that tightrope with ease.

Dombresky and Noizu bring their b2b back to Los Angeles

Last year, house music icons Dombresky and Noizu debuted their special b2b set at Insomniac’s Day Trip Festival and at their own sold-out show at the Hollywood Palladium. Almost a year later, the duo is back this October with an even bigger headline show in Los Angeles, “Save our Souls,” this time at the Shrine Expo Hall.
Having experienced their show last year, I would highly recommend checking out this event to any house heads out there. The vibes and energy were off the charts last year, and I would expect nothing less at the Shrine, where there is so much more room to dance than the Palladium.
Based on the name of the tour, we should probably expect to hear more of that bright, uplifting 90s style house music that Dombresky and Noizu bring to the floor. Click here for ticket info.

Electro-Soul Group B00TY Drops “Matter Of Time” ft. Loose Ends, Premiered on Issa Rae’s ‘Rap Sh!t Show

There’s something special that comes when electronic music, funk, and soul come together. LA-based group B00TY have a special gift at creating this type of music, led by immensely talented songwriters and producers Edan Frei and Adam Epelbaum.
Edan and Adam originally met as students in the UCLA Theater, Film & Television program – they’ve been inseparable ever since . Adopting the B00TY moniker, it was comedian/beatboxer Reggie Watts who actually booked their first show. Since then, their music has been praised by the likes of Complex, NME, and The Line of Best Fit for its raw ingenuity and creativity.

Zomboy Inaugurates His Newly-Launched Label With First EP, “Dead Man Walking Pt. 1”

Discovering Zomboy’s Never Say Die EPs a whole decade ago was one of the major catalysts in getting me into dubstep. Both Game Time and The Dead Symphonic were brilliant works with tons and tons of replay value and pretty much made Zomboy a household name in the genre. Of course, Never Say Die is now closed — but Zomboy is launching his own label: Rott N’ Roll Records.
Dead Man Walking Pt. 1 is out today from Zomboy, inaugurating the label with its first EP, and it feels a lot like a return to the magic of those first EPs. “‘Dead Man Walking Pt.1’ has so many levels of meaning to me. While it may be short, I feel the attention to detail is some of my best to date,” he said of the release.
And if the format of the EP feels familiar, there’s a reason for that, too.
“Nothing helps me write music more than creating a big theoretical concept to work towards,” Zomboy says. “In my head there is a deep underlying truth in this record, but for the sake of explanation… ‘Dead Man Walking Pt.1’ is the story of a man returning to a civilization he had once abandoned after helping them defeat a common enemy (Rott N’ Roll Pt. 1 & 2).
“If that goes over your head I don’t blame you, the stories are for me, the music is for you.”

Gian says, “Ponme Loco started off with the vocals as the majority of my records do. So I came up with something simple, but catchy. “Ponme Loco” means “Get Me Crazy,”  – once I had a vocal idea, Melfi, with a distinguished low raspy vocal, was able to accomplish what I envisioned. From there we sent a demo to Luke & he took the record to the finish line. Fred Again.. & Swedish House Mafia Dropping New Collaboration Next Week

Fred Again.., who’s experiencing a meteoric rise, only just put out a new song co-written with Four Tet (and Skrillex is also involved, somehow) and he’s already planning his next massive hit.
Teased in his private Discord first, he’s shared the news with the rest of the world via Instagram: he’s teaming up with Swedish House Mafia for “Turn On The Lights Again” coming next week. The song samples Future’s “Turn On The Lights.”
EDM.com notes this isn’t the first time the trio and young producer have worked together as he’s credited on “Calling On” from their debut album, Paradise Again.
He shared a preview of the song yesterday on Instagram from a recent live show. Stay tuned for the full release soon!

The Chainsmokers Will Become First Artists To Perform From The Edge Of Space

No, not for good. But Drew Taggart and Alex Pall, aka The Chainsmokers, have signed up with fledgling space tourism company World View to perform at the edge of space, approximately 20 miles above the Earth, making them the first artists to do so, according to AP.
“We have always dreamed of going to space and are stoked to collaborate with World View to have this adventure and experience,” said The Chainsmokers in a statement. “We know the views of both Earth and space are going to be incredible and inspiring and we hope to leverage this flight for creativity on future projects.”
The Chainsmokers will be on the inaugural expedition slated for 2024.
AP writes, “Picking The Chainsmokers for the honor was, in part, a personal decision as well as an attempt to excite a younger audience. [Ryan Hartman, CEO at World View] said he watched as his youngest son belted out lyrics from the duo’s songs and was inspired by the band’s popularity. He explained the flight to the pair over dinner.”
No doubt the performance will be live streamed with some incredible views, but we’ll have to wait a couple of years to see it in action.

Hybrid Minds Announces Headline Wembley Arena Show

To date, only two drum & bass acts have headlined the iconic Wembley Arena in the UK: Pendulum and Andy C. The 12,500-seat facility is London’s second-largest indoor arena after The O2 Arena, and the ninth-largest in the United Kingdom, but you’ll see almost every artist who’s played there has a “(Live At Wembley)” album available to stream.
Now, Hybrid Minds is poised to add their name to the list of D&B acts who have graced the venue’s marquee on October 22.
With more to come, very special supporting guests will be announced closer to the date, marking a memorable night in D&B. Selling out live shows last year for Printworks in 4 hours as well as their headline Brixton Academy show six months out from the dates, the Wembley Arena show marks the perfect progression for Hybrid Minds as the first D&B act to headline the venue this year.
The announcement comes following the release of their newest single, “Better Now” featuring Lily Denning, ahead of their Tides: Part 1 EP dropping the day before the show, October 21.

RL Grime Is Bringing Halloween XI Live To The Forum In Los Angeles

Last year, RL Grime brought his annual Halloween mix series IRL for the first time in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium. For those fortunate enough to attend, it was an unforgettable experience. For those who weren’t, you have a chance once again in an even bigger arena — the Forum.
Comparing the size of the two venues, the Hollywood Palladium has space for around 3,500-4,000 people. The Forum fits upwards of 17,000 for sporting events, a little less for music events as the stage restricts seating behind. Still, the event is going to be 4-5x bigger, with bigger production, and bigger guests (probably).
