Bursting onto the scene in 2020, Sam WOLFE has cultivated his own signature style of techno, earning him to be signed exclusively by Beatports #1 all-time ranked techno producer: UMEK. He’s released multiple singles on UMEK’s imprint 1605, and earned the support from EDM royalty, like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren.
It’s safe to say that WOLFE is dominating North America’s techno community. He has toured across the globe, showing off his mixing skills in Turkey and Lebanon, as well as on his Disruption Tour across the U.S., Canada, and Central America. With legendary sets last year at Imagine Music Festival, Temple Nightclub in Denver, and Austin’s Seismic Dance Event, WOLFE has a lot in store for 2023.
He’s kicking off the year with his electrifying ‘Out of Phase’ EP. It’s yet another impeccable release from this rising artist. Released on 1605, “Out Of Phase” is a collaborative project with ATL vocalists, Gāuri and Anadi. Its title track delivers a barrage of heavy techno and dark invigorating vocals from Anadi. The EP’s second half, “Gone”, features lyrics from Gāuri and alongside hypnotic grooves and trippy sampling throughout.
In its entirety, “Out Of Phase” is another incredible release for WOLFE, foreshadowing a killer year for the techno wizard. Listen below!

It’s barely been six months since Moore Kismet dropped their debut album, UNIVERSE, which we named our #7 album of 2022, and already they have their mind set on 2023.
SEE EVERY COLOR is the title of their newest mix, a showcase for 2023: “2023 is gonna be one for the books!!! this year, I don’t want you to just see one side of me. I want you to see every color. new music coming super soon, but here are some of my favorite things I’ve been working on for the last 6 months. ily all sm.”
The mix is 23 minutes for 2023 (and, we assume, 23 tracks) and also features shout outs from many of MK’s collaborators.

Following the successful launch of FMU Records at the tail-end of 2022 with Jon Casey and Dabow’s “I Surrender,” Alison Wonderland shares the sophomore release from the label, “Transport God” from her widely-acclaimed alias Whyte Fang. The single doubles as the fourth offering from her upcoming debut LP, with previous records “Girl,” “333,” and “TIDES,” teasing its highly-anticipated March 2023 release.

Alongside the release, FMU Records has confirmed the date and lineup of its official label launch party, which will be taking place in an NYC warehouse (location TBC). Taking place on March 10th, the lineup boasts a rare live set from Whyte Fang herself, as well as performances from a slew of FMU Records-signed artists, including Casey, Dabow, sumthin sumthin, Villa, and Aliiias.
With presale and VIP tickets already sold out, a limited number of GA are available for purchase here.
Wonderland’s Whyte Fang live performance will precede her recently announced Coachella slot, which will mark the first time she plays as her veneered in a festival setting.
We briefly caught up with Alison and asked her what it means to start her own label, what she’s excited about for the label showcase and new releases, as well as her first Coachella performance under the alias.
Artist-led labels aren’t a new thing, even in dance music we had Tiesto’s Musical Freedom, deadmau5’s mau5trap, Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak, etc., etc. In the past couple of years we’ve seen more and more like Kayzo’s Welcome Records, Subtronics’ Cyclops Recordings, and most recently Rezz’s HypnoVizion. What does starting a label mean to you as an artist/producer, as a curator and tastemaker, and as a business owner?
For me starting a label is more about helping up-and-coming artists. I think the world of music has changed a lot in the past 10 years. It’s more accessible to release music for people who aren’t on major labels. I wanted to use my platform to help promote artists who I love who are up and coming and help them be seen a little more.
What can fans expect from the label launch party where you’ll be performing a Whyte Fang set?
I love warehouse parties, I started off throwing warehouse parties in Australia. I wanted to bring that back for FMU Records. It is the type of party that suits the music we’re putting out. I just want people to expect to discover new music and have an amazing time.
Do you have any releases locked in for 2023 that you can tease or that you’re especially excited about?
I’m excited about everything we’re releasing actually. We have releases from Sumthin Sumthin, Aliiias, Sippy…and there are many more that are coming out. I’m super excited, I’m a fan of all of these artists and I’m just grateful they’re trusting me with these releases.
Whyte Fang was just announced to play at Coachella in just a couple months. You’ve performed as Alison Wonderland before, but how does it feel to bring this different project to the Polo Fields?
It’s crazy. This is going to be my third time on the Coachella lineup in 8 years. Whyte Fang is a completely different experience from Alison Wonderland. I don’t want to give away too much because that’s part of the excitement of this project. I want to make this more of an immersive experience, with the music interacting with visuals and lighting. My vocals aren’t really featured on it, and I’m just really excited to launch this. There’s also an album coming.

Calvin Harris is hitting a few US festivals this year, including Coachella which announced yesterday, as well as Hangout Fest in Alabama in May. He just released his latest album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2, last year — despite featuring even more guests than the first iteration, the sequel to his hit 2017 album didn’t garner quite as many positive responses.
That being said, we have reason to be excited as he’s back in the studio with Ellie Goulding. The two haven’t worked together since his 2014 album, Motion, in which the two created one of his biggest hits, “Outside.” She also featured on his 2012 album, 18 Months, on “I Need Your Love.”
It wouldn’t be a stretch to think the two were working on some new material precisely for the upcoming festival season, as she would be an incredible special guest to bring out at Coachella, in particular.
Either way, something new is coming in what Calvin calls their “banging song trilogy.” Stay tuned!

As a vocalist, Ruth Royall has been a fixture in the drum and bass world for a good many years. She made a splash with her first collab on the track “Refuge” with Grafix in 2019, becoming a fast Hospital favorite and a go-to for other big labels like Viper, Shogun and sister label Elevate, Korsakov and Soulvent. She’s worked with more big names than we van even list here, from the afore-mentioned Grafix to Ekko & SIdetrack, Pola & Bryson, Makoto and Mollie Collins.
Royall’s discography isn’t just about racking up cred, however (though she was recently nominated at the 2022 Drum&BassArena Awards for best vocalist), and also includes some of the the best underground tracks of the last two years. A musician to her core, Ruth Royall has also recently started releasing her own tracks, beginning last April with the poppy, new wave-influenced “New Ride” The track quickly became and has since stayed number one on releasing label Our Space‘s top ten tracks on Beatport, ahead of tracks by Cliques, Grafix and The Vanguard Project. Clearly she was on the right track.
As she continued with vocal projects throughout 2022 with more than a few featuring on label “best of” compilations from Viper, Hospital, Soulvent and Liquicity and a cheeky house cover of “Nothing Compares 2 u” by DJ Du Jour, Royall was also pressing forward with her own production. She released two tracks in succession on New State Music, “Light the Fuse” and “Apple Tree” to rave reviews and a Beatport chart slot for “Apple Tree.” Now gaining traction as a producer, she was conscripted to remix the legendary track “Higher” by DJ Fresh in December shortly after his announcement that Breakbeat Kaos would rise again. That’s a feather any producer would love in their cap, and Royall’s version does the original justice with a ravey, ameny update for 2023.
Flashing forward to the new year, it seems Royall is now all in on the production side of things as she’s about to release her third track on New State, “Walk Through Fire” and YEDM was lucky enough to snag it for a premiere. WIth this track, a signature style starts to emergy for Royall, but it’s also clear she’s still enjoying mixing styles. The ameny snares we’ve seen in previous tracks are here in form but not in function, as they’re broken up to go with the backwards stop gap syncopation of the beat structure with a drumline that almost sounds acoustic. The deep roller of a track also has some beautiful ambient sound design, which carries and smooths out what would normally be quite a heavy beat.
One would expect that Royall writes her tracks to go with her vocals, but on “Walk Through Fire” in particular, it seems that this may not always be the case. While the soulful, visceral and emotional vocals are definitely the main feature of this track, said vocals are written with a pop song structure but the track is not; it’s a classic D&B structure and not modified for verse-chorus-verse. Royall has expertly laid the vox over the track, and not only can each piece stand alone but neither takes away from the other.

NewState Promo · Ruth Royall – Walk Through Fire “Walk Through Fire” is not a pop track made to fit a D&B track or vice versa: just as any D&B producer would create it, “Walk Through Fire” is a vocal D&B track. It’s an important distinction and it’s why Ruth Royall is being taken seriously as a producer. In drum and bass, it can be so easy to be pigeonholed as one thing by fans and peers alike, and it can be a struggle to carve out a new identity, whether it’s switching subgenres or going from vocalist to producer. Not only does Ruth Royall seem determined, but she’s also already proved she’s got the chops to create her own production legacy. That legacy can only continue to build from here.
“Walk Through Fire” drops this Friday, January 13 on New State Music. Click here to pre-save. Purchase available day of release on Beatport.

Six years ago, Porter Robinson and Madeon presented the finale of their ‘Shelter’ tour at Coachella. Now, Porter returns to Coachella on his own having toured his ‘Nurture’ show for a couple years with yet another finale on the horizon.
Porter Robinson released his sophomore album Nurture in April 2021, waiting until just before things opened up during COVID to begin touring his new album. It has since been nearly two years, much shorter than the run for his Worlds album and right about the same time for ‘Shelter,’ but Nurture is coming to an end in the US this coming April.
Whether this means he’s working on a new project or he’ll be taking a touring hiatus or if he’s going to do a sort of Nurture 2.0 — we’re not sure. More information will come out in time, but if you were on the fence about going to the desert in a couple months, this might tip your scales.

The Chainsmokers have a bit of a notorious persona in the music industry. Though their antics have calmed down significantly, when they first started, they were definitely the party boys of EDM, especially considering their meteoric rise after “#Selfie.” But then came “Closer” and “Roses” and then their debut album… now they’re one of the most successful touring acts in the world.
That being said, they still retain some of that laissez-faire attitude, as we find out on the latest episode of Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper where they talk about “cheating, threesomes, and toxic exes,” per the title.

From Eptic b2b Space Laces to Black Tiger Sex Machine to Joyryde b2b Habstrakt, to Jauz b2b NGHTMRE, plus Nora En Pure, Wax Motif, Boogie T, Andrew Rayel, Virtual Riot, Timmy Trumpet and others, there’s truly something for everyone.
(Could this be the rumored deadmau5 b2b Rezz set? They’re not listed as a b2b on the lineup while others are, but maybe they’re keeping it under wraps for now…)

Already a fixture in the Australian bass music scene, Doctor Werewolf has been releasing dubstep and trap since 2010. Starting in 2014, he caught the ears of the likes of Simplify., Dim Mak and Disciple for his dubstep, so he’s become a bit of a mucky muck in that genre as well. It was Play Me label head Reid Speed and Skellytn, however, who discovered Doctor Werewolf’s hidden aptitude for D&B and conscripted him to remix a track on Skellytn’s Neurocomputer Remixed album, which released in May of 2022. After an original track on Bassrush Records’ um-and-comers compilation album The Prophecy: Volume 6, it seems as though it was a no-brainer for Play Me to finally release the Werewolf onto the world in all his Party Wolf glory with his debut D&B EP, out this Friday.
Listening to his remix of Skellytn’s “Neurocomputer” and “Empty the Clip” on the Bassrush comp, the uninitiated D&B fan might think Doctor Werewolf’s style would tend towards serious, crunchy synth neuro. His Aussie and bass fans, however, will know that there’s a heavy party streak in his dubstep and trap work. Even “Fire” feat. MC Shureshock, the teaser track for Party Wolf, was also a bit rough and ready in terms of  synth and style but there’s a vein of dancefloor there, belying the true party underneath. Now that The Party Wolf, is about to be revealed, however, we can categorically say Doctor Werewolf’s party is not going anywhere.
It’s not just the “party” infused titles of the EP and many of its tracks like “Party or Die” and “Party Over Here” that connote pure party, by the way. Following fire is a Tasmanian devil of a track called “Love Take Me Higher” with KineticTheory that’s really just every piece of rave one can stuff into a track: repeating, pitched up vox samples, classic synths, ameny snares, darkstep phrase fillers and the odd floating scratch sample, airhorn, or ragga vox all set over an ambient background. There’s more party in five seconds of this track than many of us see in a whole rave nowadays.
“Party Over Here” is more cohesive than “Love Take Me Higher” in that it follows a less frenetic timeline, but it’s certainly no less bouncy and fun. Channeling early jump up funk guidelines, Doctor Werewolf sneaks in some cheeky dubstep buildups and fart synths (come on now, let’s call a spade a spade) as a callback to the beloved brostep, which is easily the “partiest” era of dubstep. It’s also a segue into closing track, “U n Me,” another scambler of a halftime/dubstep track that radiates pure Ravey McRavepants joy and would be the perfect set closer with literally any genre at the end of a festival.
The opening track, “Party or Die” is our YEDM premiere and is clearly the EP opener for a reason. Again with some sneaky dubstep windups and screams amping up the track, “Party or Die” is the perfect entre into Doctor Werewolf’s World of Party. Once again straddling the neuro and dancefloor worlds, this track winds up the energy to prepare the listener for the madness ahead. Will you come out the other side? The only option, of course, is to “Party of Die.”

Play Me Records · Doctor Werewolf – Party Or Die [YourEDM Premiere] As the sonic equivalent to Adventure Time’s Party God character (who, incidentally, is a floating wolf head; they missed an opportunity there), both Doctor Werewolf and Play me are announcing they’re pulling no punches in 2023. Coachella has announced its 2023 lineup with Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean tapped as headliners for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively. Also coming back to the desert for the first time since 2016 will be Calvin Harris, making him the biggest EDM act on the lineup, billing-wise, for the festival.

Saturday features the first Coachella appearance of Eric Prydz presents HOLO, as well as a rare appearance by Underworld. Saturday also features Chromeo, Mura Masa, Jaeji, and Marc Rebillet, who technically isn’t “EDM,” but we’ve claimed him nonetheless.

Aside August’s rough and deep collab track with My Nu Leng called “Sahara Dub” on the fellow Bristol boys’ clandestine new label Wavelengths and a VIP of their 2020 hit “Pure X” for RAM’s 2022 annual, Mob Tactics haven’t released any new music since their War City EP in June, 2020. This isn’t all that surprising, as the pandemic either slowed or stopped production for quite a few artists, and each is taking the time needed for them to get back into the swing of things. The Mob Tactics duo also have the extra difficulty of living six thousand miles from each other. Luckily, the wait is over and 2023 is already shaping up to be a red letter year for the duo, starting with their upcoming EP, Beyond the Circus part 1.
With a style that straddles dancefloor, neurofunk and many other styles, Mob Tactics are one of those acts that can make highly technical work and unhinged, almost experimental sound design flow in a way that’s still danceable and approachable. That said, with the entre of Beyond the Circus and its frenetic pace, stark messaging and even more mad scientist sound design, fans are put on notice for this EP and its ensuing sequels: these tracks are thinkers, and they’re not couched as much in finger gun-blasting fun as previous offerings. Get those neurons firing before you step to the dancefloor, or you’ll miss a whole lot.
Starting with the EP’s title, Beyond the Circus connotes not only the dystopian madness of the pandemic but the surrounding and subsequent political, cultural and social media circuses we’ve all had to live through lo these past two years. With track names like “Murder Ball,” “Escape Room,” “Brockout” and “Blink,” the EP both points to and promises a silver lining to these crazy times. Hint: it’s the music.
If there’s one style of music out there that’s not only suited to the pre-dystopian circus that is modern society but was born of it and regularly transcends it, it’s drum & bass. Taking a genial, GenX joy in creating the sounds of chaotic evil as they do, Mob Tactics pull no punches as they launch into the spinning snare whirlwind of “Murderball.” With all its funk, chaotic, emotive melody and literal jungle sounds this track gives a distinct “bring it on” vibe.
“Brockout” continues that rough and ready with the partiest party tune on the EP, complete with ravey intro, ameny synths and an early hardcore breakbeat structure. Laid over all this, however, are some of the grimiest modern-style synths anyone’s heard in at least the last two years (coincidence)? With the perfect harmony between old school and neu neuro flavors here, it wouldn’t be surprising if RAM and Eatbrain fought over this track in some sort of A&R cage match.
The EP closes with its most hard/neuro forward track, “Blink,” but there’s also no small amount of classic funk here either. Mostly in the beat and samplings, “Blink” also calls back to those first tastes of dark-and-techstep interstitial breakdowns and stings meant to wake up the mind amidst the fast repetitive beats, listeners had better pay attention to this one; blink and you’ll miss the best parts.
Tying together the melodic “Murderball” madness of the beginning of Beyond the Circus is our YEDM premiere today, “Escape Room.” If “Murderball” is the first step beyond the circus of the weird cultural mayhem we find ourselves in, “Escape Room” is, well, the “Escape Room,” both musically and in terms of storyline. Starting off with a melodic and cinematic intro, “Escape Room” is a serious track, heavy and poignant with sinister big band synths and tortured vox scream samples, this tense wormhole of sound pushes the EP into the blissful, hedonistic party that awaits with “Brockout” and “Blink.”
The narrative within Beyond the Circus part 1 is just as strong as the music and it’s clear Mob Tactics put a lot of thought into how they wanted these tracks to be released. They certainly can be forgiven for taking their time getting their releases together, especially if they’re going to sound and feel like this. The raw power of Mob Tactics is back, and it’s likely they’ll keep taking us beyond Beyond throughout 2023.
Beyond the Circus part 1 drops this Friday, January 13 on RAM. Check Beatport to purchase.

Last year, The Chainsmokers released their fourth studio album, So Far So Good, along with an album of lofi remixes. While the album has gotten a bit better with consequent listens, it still remains one of our least favorite bodies of work the duo has released.
That being said, new year new me, The Chainsmokers are set to release their next single, “Make Me Feel” with Cheyenne Giles this Friday. Set for release on Tiësto’s Musical Freedom Records, the single is a far cry from either the pop ballads of the last couple albums or the frat party bangers the group was releasing during their come-up.

This past weekend saw the release of Skrillex’s latest single, “Way Back” with PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd, but not before he, Fred again.., and Four Tet descended upon Electric Ballroom in London four a nearly 4-hour set showing off new material and of course their latest single “Rumble,” for which Flowdan of course made an appearance.
Plenty of new music was showcased at the event, as well, not least of all this insane collaboration between Skrillex, Missy Elliott, and Mr. Oizo. If the “This the kinda beat that go…” sample is familiar to you, you might remember it from “Boy Oh Boy” by Diplo and GTA, released in 2013. Even that, however, was a sample of Missy Elliott’s iconic song “Work It” from 2002.
There might be a bit of irony to be found in the fact that the last big sample of the song in EDM was by Diplo, who once worked with Skrillex in Jack Ü, and now Skrillex himself is getting the real deal to revive the sample in his own song. But it’s probably nothing but coincidence as the song is really that big, the producers’ past work probably never came into the equation. (Missy also remixed the Jack Ü hit “Take Ü There.”)
Based on how much this particular single is being, for lack of a better word, singled out from the London set, this one could be the next that drops from Skrill’s big bag of demos. We’ll have to wait and see, but you can hear it dropped live below.

Last year, ACRAZE finally dropped “Believe” with Goodboys, his anticipated follow-up to the global smash hit, “Do It To It.” As we wrote in our review when it finally released, we were pleased that he avoided the “replicated lightning in a bottle” route and went a bit more melodic rather than club-focused.
Luckily, if you were missing the club sound, Galantis has a new remix out today exactly for that purpose. The energy is turned up to 10 and the vocals from Goodboys shine even brighter with the poppy synths and bouncy rhythm.

It’s been a hell of a week for Skrillex, starting things off Sunday with a huge teaser showing off around a dozen unreleased tracks and teasing what is more than likely two albums coming in 2023. Just a couple days later, he finally released the highly-anticipated “Rumble” with Fred again.. and Flowdan. In the same breath, he announced yet another single would be dropping the next day (yesterday), “Way Back” with PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd.
After previewing the song on his Instagram this week, “Way Back” featuring PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd has now become available for the public to hear. With all three artists having garnered a reputation for shattering musical expectations within their own genres, it only makes sense that this collaboration is as eclectic and entertaining as previous work that their fan bases have come to love.
Sonically, it shares some similarities with his collaboration on 100 gecs’ “Torture Me” in the way the rhythm and vocals are produced. It’s sort of drum & bass means chiptune with the unique Skrillex flair that you can especially hear in the drums.

One of the best elements of melodic bass is the emotions that it translates to the listener. Whether it’s nostalgia or euphoria, it’s always a special listening experience.
Today, rising artists Rescve, Asher Shashaty, and Miyiko have teamed up for an epic single that beautifully fuses the best parts of all involved into a single cohesive feature titled, “Urban Forest”. For Asher Shashaty, this is the first of three singles which is leading to the drop of his debut album he’s promptly titled ‘Astral Spring’.

Together, these three make a incredible team, perfectly blending a powerful vocal performance from Miyiko overtop a beautiful back beat and swirling, uplifting melodies provided by Rescve and Asher Shashaty. It’s a listening experience not easily forgotten and hopefully the first of many more collaborations between them all.

You can’t go wrong with any of the songs, but our favorite is “Party People”, it gives this electrifying feel of being a boiler room type party with good people around as BINGE fuels the song with smooth vocal cuts and a insatiable groove.

Hood Politics Records · Hood Politics Presents: BINGETAPE Volume. 3 Capping off this week is the first single from BINGEWATCH, “IDK WHAT TIME IT IS“, and it’s a scorcher.
