The Libertines announce 4 extra gigs for November

The Libertines, set to drop their highly anticipated new album All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade on April 5th, are ecstatic as their UK/IRELAND tour completely sold out within hours, surpassing the speed of any of their past tours.

Shigeichi Negishi, The Godfather of Karaoke, dies at 100

After a century as the life and soul of the party, the inventor of karaoke, Shigeichi Negishi, has died at the age of 100.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal‘s Matt Alt, Negishi’s daughter, Atsumi Takano, reveals that her father suffered a fall on 26 January. He died of natural causes shortly after.
Negishi invented the first-ever karaoke machine in 1967. According to the Wall Street Journal, his original invention started as somewhat of a joke; Negishi loved to sing, so when a colleague joked that he had an awful voice, he started daydreaming about how he might sound with a backing track.
His idea was simple: to create a machine that would play instrumental tapes. It didn’t matter if Negishi had a ‘bad’ voice – he made it his mission to create a machine that would allow him to sing his heart out over a backing track like a real popstar.
The 1967 Sparko Box was the initial karaoke machine prototype. Negishi ran a consumer electronic company, which allowed him access to a speaker, microphone, and tape deck. As Negishi revealed to online publication Kotaku, Negishi tested out the prototype with an instrumental version of Yoshio Kodama’s Mujo no Yume, before heading home and hosting the world’s first karaoke party in his kitchen.
However, Negishi never patented the design. Negishi and his partner believed it would the “cost and headache wasn’t worth it”, Alt wrote for Kotaku. At the time it would have been “extremely expensive and time-consuming to obtain a patent” – not to mention it required instrumental tracks to run, which would each require unique usage rights.

While Matt Alt was entrusted to relay the news on the Wall Street Journal, Alt also took to X to reflect on Negishi’s passing, stating: “Farewell to another legend: Shigeichi Negishi, inventor of karaoke, has died age 100. By automating the sing-along, he earned the enmity of performers who saw his machine as a threat to their jobs. It’s an eerie precursor of the debate surrounding AI’s impact on artists today.”
Alt also shared a lovely behind the scenes snap of him and Negishi. The photo is from 2018 when Alt was interviewing Negishi for his book, Pure Invention: How Japan Made the Modern World.
Alt reports that Negishi’s family still owns the original – and still functioning – Sparko Box.

Above & Beyond’s DJ Table Fell Over During Their Lollapalooza Argentina Set

The incident was short and, fortunately, harmed no one.
Five thousand dollars had never devaluated so quickly in Argentina before. It’s no secret Lollapalooza is one of, if not the, signature yearly festivals of South America. Argentina, Brazil, Chile and other countries hold their own versions of the gathering each March, bringing to the continent a plethora of different artists and genres. Among those, Dance music is always present. This year, artists like Diplo and Timmy Trumpet represented the scene, alongside Trance trailblazers Above & Beyond.
Celebrating their return to Buenos Aires for the first time since their last show nearly a year ago, Jono and Paavo were bringing the heat to the Perry’s Stage of the venue, playing banger after banger. The crowd was buzzing, and everything was going spectacularly well. Until it wasn’t.
The Incident
Right as they were hypnotised by the energy of the moment during ilan Bluestone’s remix of their hit track ‘We’re All We Need’, something unbelievable happened: the DJ booth tipped over and fell forward, taking with it the entire DJ equipment, as well as the boys’ laptop, which they use to write their iconic on-screen messages while playing.
Unsurprisingly, the music cut off abruptly as cables snapped and detached from the players. Jono and Paavo were, well, speechless, but took the situation like champs and laughed it off from the beginning, while help came to work out a solution. Although witnesses recall buttons flying from the poor gadgetry plummeting onto the ground, not a single attendee was harmed. Everything was sorted in a timely manner, and the boys went back to playing in just over five minutes. Laptop and everything.
Culprits?
General consensus points to the festival itself as the one to blame for the incident. Poor — or rushed — building quality of a booth that was put there just after other acts which involved live bands and, therefore, forced the stage to be set up against the clock. Although others say Above & Beyond had a share of responsibility, from the video — attached below — you can see they didn’t push the booth forward. If anything, Jono tried to catch it mid-fall.
And, just to be clear, you can’t ask a DJ not to enjoy what they’re playing. We’re full of those guys now, let’s try and embrace passion again thank you. Plus, you’ve got people like Timmy Trumpet who played just hours before at the same festival. And he too jumps around, and he even climbs on top of the booth to play! I can only begin to imagine the chaos that would’ve hit the festival if this very thing had happened to him atop the decks.
Luckily, what happened was, damaged equipment aside, something we can now laugh about. Nobody was injured, the show went on, they even did their Push The Button moment afterwards, and closed their set in style, falling just a bit short of their original plans, just to stick to the schedule.

John Bishop announces ‘Back At It’ tour extension for 2025

Comedy superstar John Bishop is adding extra dates to his ‘Back At It’ UK and Ireland stand-up tour following phenomenal demand for tickets.
Additional shows have been added, expanding the tour to a substantial 86 dates. Some performances will feature a BSL interpreter. John plans to extend the tour into 2025. iZotope – Trash Lite

iZotope’s Trash distortion plugin, which was originally released in 2003 and soon established itself as an iconic distortion effect for producers, made a big return recently. This revamped version introduces a new look, a more modern interface, a free version and a version for iPad.
Trash offers over 60 distortion types and 600 impulse responses. New additions include an XY pad for blending algorithms, an envelope follower, and what it calls a Scream filter. With Trash Lite, you get a free, limited version of the full thing, but it’s still impressive nonetheless.

Run The Enemy brought even more tragedy to the legacy of Sylvia Plath with their Post-Punk vignette, She Writes Poetry

Poetry may be becoming a dying art form, but it lives and breathes through the hauntingly melodic introspection in the standout single, She Writes Poetry, from Run the Enemy’s hotly anticipated debut album, Trail of Tears. After the post-punk-tinged and angularly cavernous lead guitar work in the prelude, the timbre of the melancholic indie vocal lines spectrally appears in the achingly pensive release which finds the monochrome middle ground between Editors earlier work and Interpol’s most affecting expositions of ennui. With the final crescendo, She Writes Poetry, which gives Richey Edwards and Morrissey a run for their lyrical vignette money, builds into a massive all-encompassing production with strings carving through the post-punk atmosphere. Written to allude to the abusive relationship between Plath and Ted Hughes, the Cambridge-based outfit succeeded in bringing even more tragedy to the legacy of Plath, given that she stuck her head in an oven in her final moments and penned some of the most pensively affecting works to date, that is some feat of ingenuity.
