A Last Dance at the Techno Temple: Awakenings New Year’s at Gashouder
Everyone has their own way of celebrating the end of the year, but for those who wanted to do so in the most memorable way – and with a bang – one of the three Awakenings New Year’s events on December 28th, 29th, or 31st was undoubtedly the place to be. EDMHouseNetwork had the pleasure of attending numerous Awakenings events throughout 2024, each one leaving us in awe. The event we attended on December 29th was no exception. One of the most spectacular aspects of Awakenings is how they consistently outdo themselves with every event, especially in terms of production and stage design. It’s not just that each event offers a fresh take on design and visuals, but the way the production evolves throughout the day to create a unique atmosphere for every DJ is truly remarkable. The time, effort, skill, and resources required to pull this off are nothing short of extraordinary. Not only are attendees taken on a journey through music that continually shifts and evolves, but they’re also immersed in a dynamic visual experience that matches the energy of each set. On December 29th, the production and stage design featured an impressive array of triangles positioned in a 360-degree configuration throughout the iconic Gashouder. This was complemented by 700 LED strips, resulting in a staggering total of nearly 1 kilometer of LED lighting. For the first time ever, Awakenings also combined two of their iconic centerpiece elements-the mirror ball and the mesmerizing mirror-into a single event. The mirror ball remained the central focal point, while the mirror shone brilliantly behind the DJ booth, creating a stunning visual synergy. Musically, the event focused on groove techno, with a lineup that delivered an unforgettable day. Thomas Traxx kicked things off with high-energy, classic-meets-modern techno. JakoJako entranced the crowd with her modular synths and experimental beats, while Funk Assault elevated the energy with groovy, funk-infused techno. Ben Klock followed with his signature deep, hypnotic, and powerful set, and Rødhåd took the audience on a journey with his atmospheric and driving techno. Finally, Nina Kraviz closed the night with an eclectic mix of acid and experimental techno. Photo credit: Charlotte van der GaagOnce again, we were blown away by how seamlessly every element – production, stage design, and the diverse styles of the DJs – came together to create something truly extraordinary, and a standout moment of the night was the flawless transition between Ben Klock and Rødhåd. Both delivered mesmerizing sets on their own, but together, they crafted an electrifying progression, building anticipation, excitement, and an irresistible surge in tempo. Moments like these on the dancefloor are rare – when the entire audience becomes united by a shared energy that transcends the music. It’s not just about the beats or melodies being exceptional; it’s about the entire experience reaching deep and connecting souls on a profound level. This was one of those special moments, and it will linger far beyond the last beat of Awakenings New Years on the 2024. What made this experience even more special was the bittersweet realization that the Awakenings New Year’s celebrations at Gashouder, also called the ‘’Techno Temple’’, marked the end of an era – at least for the next 1.5 years – as the legendary venue will undergo major renovations starting in 2025. Leaving the Gashouder for the last time after an event that left us longing for more, felt like a farewell and temporary goodbye to a space that has been central to countless unforgettable moments. However, looking ahead to what Awakenings has in store for 2025, there’s no doubt that the coming year will be filled with exciting surprises and groundbreaking experiences. In May 2024, Awakenings introduced its very first edition of Upclose, focusing on the more progressive and niche corners of techno – a concept that was enthusiastically embraced by the community. The second edition is already set for May 17th and 18th, 2025, with more information about lineups and tickets available here. In July 2024, Awakenings celebrated the third edition of its headliner-driven Awakenings Summer Festival, a massive three-day techno extravaganza that drew nearly 100,000 visitors. The fourth edition is scheduled for July 11–13, 2025, and details about the first wave of artists can be found here. For a glimpse into the amazing experience EDMHouseNetwork had at the 2024 Summer Festival, check out our full coverage here. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Awakenings and Upclose continue to push boundaries and set new standards in the music event industry. Their relentless innovation in production techniques, bold experimentation with new concepts, and unwavering commitment to quality is a great example of the kind of passion, grit, and vision needed to remain at the forefront and push the industry to new heights. We at EDMHouseNetwork extend a heartfelt thank you to Awakenings, Upclose, and every individual who contributed to the incredible experiences of 2024 – We can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store!

Ternion Sound to Disband After 2025 Farewell Tour
Ternion Sound are disbanding after 2025, the electronic music trio announced today. In a heartfelt statement, the group comprising Jack Denney, Aric Okerman and Andrew Hill expressed immense pride in their seven-year journey. Hill and his partner are now expecting their first child in March, and with various personal and professional factors in play, they've decided to bring the project to a close. The origins of the Minneapolis-based trio can be traced back to 2016's Infrasound Music Festival, where each of its producers joined forces for an impromptu DJ set. They quickly became known for their unique sound, which blends dubstep and experimental bass with reverence for the UK underground. Their scintillating debut album, Digital Artifice, released in October 2023 on Noisia's venerable VISION label, showcasing their versatility through 26 tracks. Promising a memorable final chapter to their career, Denney, Okerman and Hill are now planning a farewell tour and are currently in talks with their favorite promoters. "From the onset, we created Ternion Sound for specific reasons and we’ve tried to stay true to those the whole time: Playing on sound systems that honor the music, integrity in how we portray ourselves, education, sustainability, and freedom to explore compositionally inside of bass music," Ternion Sound said in a statement. "Hopefully we’ve represented those ideals with our project and we hope to have inspired others to do the same." You can read the group's full statement below. New Alien-Themed EDM Festival Bringing Rezz, RL Grime and More to Wisconsin's UFO Country
A brand-new EDM festival is colonizing this summer in Wisconsin, bringing an extraterrestrial twist to a venue better known for heavy metal and country music. Force Fields, the latest venture from the organizers behind Rock Fest and Hoofbeat, leans hard into the region's reputation as a UFO hotspot. Promising "mind-bending visuals" and "awe-inspiring production," the marketing plays up an alien invasion narrative that feels perfectly at home in Cadott, where locals have reported mysterious lights and unexplained phenomena for decades. It's a shrewd pivot for the proprietors of Force Fields, Chippewa Valley Music Festivals, who are betting that electronic music's futuristic aesthetics will resonate with Wisconsin's festival landscape, where EDM events of this scale are relatively rare. "Launching Force Fields is a thrilling new chapter for us," CVMF's Wade Asher said in a press release back in July. "There’s an excitement in crafting a festival that not only showcases the hottest EDM artists, but also immerses attendees in a narrative that’s as deep and mysteries as the universe itself. We’re excited for fans to experience it." Whether the new camping festival can successfully merge rural Wisconsin's UFO mythology with rave culture remains to be seen, but they've unveiled an inaugural lineup to meet the moment. Headlining the first-ever Force Fields are Rezz, RL Grime, Marshmello, Liquid Stranger, PEEKABOO, Flux Pavilion, INZO and Mersiv. The undercard is also impressive, featuring LYNY, MPH, Ravenscoon and EDM.com Class of 2023 stars Blossom and A Hundred Drums, among others. Force Fields is scheduled for June 6-7, 2025 in Cadott, Wisconsin. You can check out the lineup below and purchase passes here. Meta Ditches Third-Party Fact-Checking, Replacing with Community Notes
Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta announced on Tuesday a significant shift in its content moderation strategy, abandoning its partnership with independent fact-checkers in favor of a user-driven system similar to that employed by Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). Shifting Focus to Community Notes Meta will discontinue its program with third-party fact-checking organizations, citing concerns about potential biases within the expert community and the volume of content flagged for review. Instead, the company will implement a “Community Notes” model, empowering users to collaboratively identify and provide context for potentially misleading information. In conjunction with this change, Meta plans to relax restrictions on certain topics, including immigration and gender, to prioritize addressing more serious violations like terrorism, child exploitation, and drug-related content. The company acknowledged that its previous approach, characterized by intricate content moderation systems, may have resulted in excessive censorship. Potential Implications The changes announced by Meta are expected to have a significant impact on the content users encounter on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The shift towards community-driven moderation and the relaxation of certain content policies could lead to a more diverse and less curated user experience, but also raise concerns about the potential for the spread of misinformation and harmful content. Meta’s decision to overhaul its content moderation strategy marks a significant departure from its previous approach and will undoubtedly be closely watched by policymakers, researchers, and users alike. Dream Electro Duo Super Mal revive the hype around their hit single with a set of new remixes ‘Bigger Than Big’
OUT NOW Listen Here Influences Daft Punk Super Mal’s iconic track Bigger Than Big returns with an electrifying remix package featuring two fresh interpretations: one from The Green Man and another by rising Bristol-based Drum & Bass producer Harvey Gordon, aka Creatures. Having recently reclaimed the rights to their music from Universal, Super Mal collaborated with Creatures to bring these remixes to life, staying true to their plan to revisit the track when the time was right. Beyond music, the release also aims to raise funds to help protect the Amazon Rainforest, as nature and environmental preservation have become a major inspiration for the project. Originally a top 20 hit and featured on NOW That’s What I Call Music 67, Bigger Than Big is reimagined here with The Green Man’s influence and Creatures’ dynamic, cutting-edge style, making it a powerful return to the dance floor. SuperMal burst onto the electro and house scene in 2006, making waves with a fresh, high-energy sound. In 2007, they achieved breakout success with Bigger Than Big, a track featuring electro icon Luciana, who had recently scored a UK chart hit with Yeah Yeah. Signed to Universal Music, Bigger Than Big climbed into the top 20 and earned a spot on NOW That’s What I Call Music 67. Today, Super Mal is back with new remixes, pledging all proceeds to Amazon Frontlines to support the preservation of the Amazon. Getting to know Super Mal Introduce yourself and your project I’m James, one of the founder members of Super Mal, an electro project from back in the day! I recently got the rights to my single back from Universal so decided to do some mixes and give any proceeds away to a cause close to my heart which is preserving the natural world. I did the Green Man remix and I also got my current favourite artist Creatures on the dials. Explain what musical genre fits you best I was big into Daft Punk so pretended to be French, hence the band name. I was into French House and electro. But my whole life I have been big into Jungle and Drum & Bass and it’s the genre of a lot of the music I am making these days. Were you connected with music from a young age and did anyone inspire you? Yes! I got into chart music from a very young age, maybe 8, and then my tastes broadened into everything, Metal, Hard House, Jungle, Hardcore, mostly anything extreme. At school I often got into bands way before the herd arrived. I was playing instruments from age 7. What kickstarted your music career? I kickstarted it! I was networking big time, hanging out with A&R guys, listening to demos for them for work experience, working in label post rooms, doing tiny gigs, anything I could to get myself out there. Eventually I met the right people at the right time and had some success as an artist. Tell us more about your sound and how it’s evolved over time Well personally it’s evolved by exploring different genres that I love and trying to create the best music I can. Recently I’ve been working with Harvey Gordon aka Creatures who is an amazing Drum & Bass artist, everyone should check out his work if you like D&B. Any words you want to share to encourage other artists or producers? Work hard on your music and building your following and success will come, people will notice. Good music usually rises to the top and gets noticed. Don’t go in unsolicited. How do you nurture your industry relationships? I don’t to be honest, I have no need to, it’s always been a minefield. However, if I was starting out today, I would be looking for the good execs who care about music and the artists, there are good people out there! Is there anyone you’d like to thank that’s been crucial to your journey? Yeah, I’d like to thank my wife Viki, David Joseph, one of the greats, a veteran of the music industry who wrote me a good reference when I needed it most. James Reynolds, Nick Clow and a lady called Emma Shalless for having such good taste. What’s your favourite piece of studio equipment or software? It’s got to be the 808 still, use it all the time. Name your favourite club or festival and how it makes you feel Glastonbury, when the sun shines it’s incredible, no feeling like it. Name an outlandish rider request? We counted ourselves lucky if we got riders. Favourite clubbing memory and who or what did it involve? Going raving with my best mate Danny Stevens, DJ’s Randall & Grooverider What famous quote represents you best? ‘Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee’ – Hemmingway If you could play at any venue, where would it be and why? I’ve been lucky enough to play a lot of the good ones, but Glasto on some medium sized stage would be ideal! Music is the direction I went in, and it will take care of you if you let it! One song you really couldn’t live without and why? Really hard question, Pixies ‘Debaser’, but there are loads. This one never gets old for me. Namedrop your favourite 5 artists or DJs (past or present) Creatures, Daft Punk, DJ Hype, Grooverider, Randall, What was your first music memory and how did it fuel your fire? Starship ‘We Built This City’ as a child blew my mind, showing my age! Fell in love with music after that to an intense degree. Tell us more about your plans for the future I’m going to be doing more music of course, and I have got into trying to inspire future generations by making soundscapes out in nature with music production students. I think it’s important to get people to reconnect and appreciate nature! Any worldly advice you’d like to share? True success starts and flows from within. Nicole Kidman Brings Rave Culture to the Big Screen In "Babygirl"
Few could have predicted that Nicole Kidman, an actress synonymous with icy thrillers and sweeping period dramas, would end up trading red carpets for the shadowy glow of a Queens techno club. But that's exactly what happened when filming Halina Reijn's erotic thriller Babygirl, in which the Oscar-winning actress immerses herself in the pulse of underground rave culture, proving once again that her range knows no bounds. Inside Basement, the beloved nightclub tucked beneath the Knockdown Center in Queens, Babygirl finds Kidman's character Romy navigating a labyrinth of strobe-lit rooms in search of her lover Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson. Basement, already a mecca for New York’s underground dance aficionados, gains an added layer of mystique with Kidman's appearance in the film. Perhaps your next late-night escapade will include an unexpected sighting of the Babygirl star. At the 2024 GQ Men of the Year event, she casually admitted her fondness for rave culture. "I'm a small party person, but I do like a rave," Kidman quipped to an interviewer at the time. "I told you, I'm an extreme person." Paradise City Festival to celebrate 10 years of activity
Paradise City Festival is getting ready for its tenth edition, which will take place on June 27, 28, and 29 2025 in the exquisite gardens of Ribaucourt Castle in Perk, Steenokkerzeel following a few calm months. Starting on Wednesday, January 8 at 12:00, are ticket sales. From a small celebration with just 5,500 guests over two days in 2015, what began ten years ago is now a globally acknowledged event. Paradise City stays loyal to its basic values: superb music, innovative staging, and strong attention to sustainability, with more than 43,000 attendees in 2024 and an amazing line-up of 134 musicians across seven stages. Organiser Gilles De Decker underlines that the route to success has not been without difficulties. We started rather naively, with a lot of idealism and a clear vision, but it has taken years to get to where we are today. The second edition in 2016 was almost the end of Paradise City. Heavy rain and mud kept visitors away, and financially, it was a disaster. That we continued after that edition still feels like a small miracle. Paradise City once more showed its fortitude during COVID-19. The crew set up 20 smaller events on a lake with 60 boats for groups of eight and the DJ along the waterfront while most celebrations were called off. It was a creative solution in a difficult time, and it felt great to bring people together safely during those tough times – De Decker says. Ten years of Paradise City reveals many highlights when one looks back. Gilles describes a pure bliss moment on the Castle Stage in 2019 from DJ Koze’s performance: The energy broke loose, and everything came together perfectly. It was magical – Job Jobse’s closing set at the Forest Stage last summer also sticks with him – Never before have I experienced such intensity and euphoria. Paradise City Festival crowd Paradise City, in the meantime, is likewise looking outside Belgium. Next August, the celebration in Austria will feature the fourth edition of the Paradies Garten Festival, a rather smaller-scale event with three stages next to a castle outside Vienna. With success, the same fundamental principles of excellent artists, sustainability, and beautiful surroundings are carried through here. A clear taste for Austrian music has developed among enthusiasts. “It feels fantastic to see our idea flourish abroad,” notes De Decker. Thanks to outstanding accomplishments in energy, waste management, water saving, and sustainable mobility, Paradise City was given the esteemed AGF Awards as the most sustainable music event in 2024 worldwide. The festival set itself apart with creative solar energy solutions, reusable materials, and environmentally friendly transportation choices like more trains and electric shuttle buses. Organiser Gilles De Decker stresses – Festivals can have a negative impact on the environment. That is why we keep improving ourselves and want to set an example for a sustainable future. While we are proud of what we have achieved, we know there is still much work to do. Whatever the future brings, quality music will always remain central at Paradise City. We want to remain cutting-edge and continue to represent the current scene – De Decker – We consciously choose quality over quantity and stick to intimate stages without big growth ambitions regarding visitor numbers. Making good electronic music bigger and highlighting the cultural impact remains our mission. Although the first half of this summer’s lineup will be revealed next week, the organizers already suggested a special combination of modern artists and iconic pioneers. Our tenth anniversary is a tribute to the founding fathers of electronic music – says De Decker. – They laid the foundations for the culture we cherish. At the same time, we are looking ahead by offering new talent a place next to the veterans – side by side, shoulder to shoulder. It will be a meeting of generations bursting with energy and creativity. Paradise City 2025 tickets will start to sell on the website on Wednesday, January 8 at 12:00. Those who wish to be sure should be fast since tickets often sell out fast. The post Paradise City Festival to celebrate 10 years of activity appeared first on The Groove Cartel.
