Great news come from the Drum and Bass corner of the Dance industry, as the renowned pioneering duo Sigma are making a powerful return to their origins. Not only that, but they’re doing so in style, with the launch of their new imprint, Day Ones. The first single to be released on said label is theirs, and it’s called ‘Chargie‘. The birth of Day Ones has to do with musical independence, and also giving back. The duo state they are quite thankful for their origins and the early support the industry gave them, and this is an act of returning to said scene. “Day Ones is about starting fresh, but it’s also about paying homage to everything that made Sigma what it is today“, they say. “We’ve been through it all—the highs, the lows, the grind—and now we’re back doing what we love most, making music for the scene that gave us everything. It feels like coming home“. ‘Chargie’ Day Ones’ first release comes from the bosses themselves. ‘Chargie’ is a powerful single that features the vocals of heavy icons Scrufizzer and Jamakabi, and aims to evoke the darker energy of their early work. The track signals a decisive shift for the duo as they embark on a new chapter, building upon the foundations they established over a decade ago. A fusion of 90s Jungle with flavours of Jump Up and Dancehall, the piece stands out as a fine wine: in an industry often saturated with over-the-top arrangements, heavily distorted leads, and often very heavily packed frequency spectrums at all times, this tune comes as a refresher, and a reminder that there’s another way: a more stripped-back way of producing DnB which, once the method has been mastered, can deliver the same power and rhythm that modern-day DnB looks up to. Chargie’ is the perfect way to kick things off with Day Ones. It’s raw, unapologetic, and takes us right back to our roots. The organizers of Sol Fest, an electronic music and arts festival in North Florida, have announced an indefinite hiatus. They announced the decision today in an emotional statement, reflecting on the challenges, triumphs and the spirit of the independent festival, which launched three years ago. "The road hasn't been easy, but your support has been the driving force that kept us going," the statement reads. "We want to extend our deepest appreciation to the entire team, volunteers, friends, and family who helped us bring this to life." Sol Fest, known for its bass-focused lineups and deep-rooted sense of community, faced significant hurdles throughout its tenure. Organizers cited unexpected challenges from the very beginning, including the sudden loss of the CEO of their original venue, which forced a last-minute relocation. They detailed extensive efforts to secure a new home for the festival, working with officials and even personally funding venue preparations. Despite the indefinite hiatus, the festival's proprietors haven't pulled the plug entirely. "This isn’t goodbye, Sol Fam," they wrote. "For now, hold your loved ones close and keep the Sol Fest spirit alive!" The agreement signals a shift in how music streaming services and record labels might collaborate going forward. Spotify superfan perks and royalties adjustments UMG’s vision, known as “Streaming 2.0“, is where these talks started. It suggests a “Super-Premium” subscription. Which could include perks like early access to music, exclusive deluxe editions, hi-res audio, and even opportunities for artist Q&As. This model caters to the most passionate fans, allowing them to experience music in new, immersive ways. Unsurprisingly, It looks like the profit-hungry Spotify board of directors is ready to pull the trigger. Additionally, the deal could result in higher royalty rates for songwriters, a long-standing concern. The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) had previously criticized Spotify for royalty changes, which led to a formal complaint to the FTC. With this agreement, hopefully, Spotify may address some of these concerns by offering improved rates to creators. French DJ, producer and perennial electronic artist Étienne de Crécy has today released a new track ‘Take It Back’, featuring US indie duo Sports. Neo-nostalgic and rhythmic, the band’s dream-pop vocals are backed by a signature, one-of-a-kind de Crécy composition, transporting the listener into a realm of euphoric serenity. ‘Take It Back’ follows November’s ‘World Away’, the first single to be released from de Crécy’s forthcoming sixth studio album, WARM UP. The return of the artist saw him collaborate with Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) on the track. Here, de Crécy’s melodic mastery and prowess in diverse electronic production flawlessly combines with Taylor’s renowned hypnotic vocal. With this new album, WARM UP, Étienne de Crécy is taking bold steps. The man known for moving people on the dancefloor has crafted an album meant to be enjoyed at home during the day: the tracks are more chill than clubby, more organic than electronic, and warmer than metallic. Has he gone off into the deep end? It’s more likely the world has pushed him during the height of COVID – a time when beats weren’t exactly echoing through clubs – to create an album for home listening. It’s a shift in tempo. Another hallmark of the project is its collaborations. For each track, de Crécy invites an artist, often far-removed from his usual scene, having asked them to freely write a song based on the instrumental he shares – his only guiding principle. This has led the artist out of his comfort zone: from the world of clubs and the iconic cube that’s carried him high, from a dancefloor fired up by his sets, from an album where he would have total control, into a soundscape with deliberately blurred boundaries – even reflected on the album artwork’s typography – and with more unpredictability too. The lineup he brings together includes an array of surprising personalities, with musical influences spanning indie-pop to rap. Here, the DJ of heady, dizzying nights reinvents himself as a generous, curious host, sharing his infectious joy. “I reached out to many artists, mostly English or American, whose work I admire and listen to at home. Most of them come from indie-rock backgrounds—not electronic music at all. My request probably caught some by surprise, especially within the younger US indie scene. For example, the band Sports was one of the first to respond.” “During the travel restrictions, I had to start working remotely. I would send out instrumentals, and in return, receive vocal tracks. We occasionally managed to arrange recording sessions later on, but there are still some artists I’ve never met in person—everything was done over email.” The album features collaborations with a diverse array of artists: Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Peter Von Poehl, Frank Leone, Master Peace, Olivia Merilahti, Sports, Sugar Pit, Kero Kero Bonito, Caroline Rose and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz).
