  1. News Welcome to our first-ever monthly round-up. Here you’ll find snippets of news from the world of bass this month. After December’s non-stop debauchery, we’ve made it through what always seems to be the longest month of the year. January is over, and what a month it’s been for bass music. Far from what Overview boss Peter Piper’s hilarious Dramatic Reading will have you believe, D&B has not been ruined, but after 40-ish years, it’s actually still doing rather well. Some might say thriving. To mark four long decades, the International Music Summit has announced that they will be spotlighting jungle and drum and bass at this year’s summit in Ibiza. More recognition for the genre and the amazing artists who reside within it came in the form of the mighty Nia Archives being the first jungle artist to be nominated for three Brit Awards over the course of her career. A landmark moment for jungle representation in mainstream music. Big Ups! We saw living legends Fabio & Grooverider make their long-awaited return to the BBC. While it was only a mere two weeks while covering Shrelle’s radio show, we were all locked-on to hear them bringing their legacy back to the airwaves. Another iconic duo have also given us a blast from the past—Skream and Benga announced they are working on a new album together, with a new joint Instagram account. https://www.instagram.com/skreamizm/p/DEXPSDaMvup While some artists are reigniting their joint passion, some are coming to the end of their time. And it’s with a heavy heart that we read the news around 140 is Dubstep trio Ternion Sound announcing their split. They will tour this year before splitting in 2026. January has also seen how large the heart of bass is. The scene dug deep for beloved MC Ben Verse and raised over £60K to help with the costs of his treatment—tripling the target. Beats In Kind has released a various artist LP—Flashlight—with a whopping 50 tracks, in aid of the LA wildfires. We also saw the release of Con*Natural with all proceeds going to his family and their charity. That’s a wrap for January—the bass scene is already off to a huge start in 2025. More next month! Tracks One By One (VISLA Remix)– Operate and Madrush MC Sagar Deshmukh The ‘Overview 100’ compilation was released in two parts, spanning either side of the new year. Part one, which debuted in December, included remixes from Calyx, Wingz, gyrofield, and En:vy. The second part, released just weeks ago, delivered equally explosive reworks from the likes of Enei, Zero T, Satl, and Waeys, among many other heavy-hitting contributions. Among the avalanche of standout tracks, one that truly demands attention is VISLA’s skull-shattering rework of Operate and Madrush MC’s “One By One.” While the original offers a brooding, laidback narrative, VISLA takes the track to a whole new level, transforming it into a rugged, dancefloor-destroying anthem—a skill he has perfected since his breakout year in 2023. From dark, intimate clubs to festival stages, this remix is a guaranteed crowd-shaker, embodying the raw energy and spirit that defines Overview Music’s legacy. Fuel – Denham Audio ft Jianbo Ant Mullholland The eclectic Denham Audio has dropped another release on the ever-growing Locked On Records, joining forces with South London MC Jianbo. This bouncy UK garage rhythm infused with a steely bassline complements Jianbo’s flow and delivery flawlessly—pushing the boundaries sonically, transpiring into a dancefloor damager which will undoubtedly be played in a rave near you. Mixes Mia Koden (On The Grid Special) @TheLotRadio Isabella Jeanne de Boer Mia Koden kicked the year off with an exceptional showcase of sound system-centric genres on her ‘On The Grid’ special mix for The Lot Radio earlier this month. Featuring a flawless blend of dubstep, dub-steppas, and 4/4 grooves, she set the tone immediately with an unreleased collaboration with Dubrunner, delivering raw dub energy. Highlights included Martin Campbell’s Wicked Rule from Pharma’s Dub Edits, a standout selection certifying her deep connection to bass-rooted genres. Closing the set with Love Joys’ Jah Light, a timeless reggae gem, Koden honoured the roots of sound system culture while pushing its boundaries into the present. Through this heartfelt ode, Mia Koden seamlessly fuses old-school-driven selections with modern dancefloor appeal, reaffirming her place at the forefront of today’s dance music scene. Citizen b2b Insectcrusha VS Pent1 b2b Delta – Mode London Ant Mullholland London-based DJs Citizen & Insectcrusha invited up-and-coming producers Pent1 and Delta onto their monthly radio show on Mode London in a versus-style clash—bringing a variety of sounds ranging from 120-140bpm, covering an array of genres including electro, UK bass, dubstep, and more.

  4. Some songs are built for the dancefloor, others for the quiet corners of the soul. Ellie Goulding's acoustic rendition of "Hypnotized," her collaboration with Anyma, bridges both worlds with astounding clarity. "Hypnotized" released after its viral premiere during the DJ's historic Vegas Sphere residency. Goulding performed the melodic techno track live as a stunning visual engulfed the crowd, her face contorting while a swarm of otherworldly hands clawed and twisted her features. View the original article to see embedded media. Her stripped-back take strips away the pulsing beats of the original, leaving behind a raw, intimate ballad that showcases her vocal prowess in its purest form. Accompanied only by a delicate piano, Goulding's voice is both soft and searing, floating effortlessly between breathy vulnerability and crystalline power. The absence of Anyma's electronic production magnifies the cover's emotional weight, revealing a deep melancholy beneath the hypnotic allure of its lyrics. Goulding's comment that "the vocal control on this is no joke" is no exaggeration. The stripped-back arrangement leaves nowhere to hide, demanding precision and stamina. Where the original version of "Hypnotized" thrives on rave-ready intensity, this acoustic take feels like the morning after—a moment of reflection when the euphoria has worn off. It's a testament to Goulding's artistry that she can command attention with just her voice and a piano, proving that sometimes, less truly is more. Watch Goulding perform the cover live below. 5. It’s time for the next chapter of a defining act in the DnB scene. Great news come from the Drum and Bass corner of the Dance industry, as the renowned pioneering duo Sigma are making a powerful return to their origins. Not only that, but they’re doing so in style, with the launch of their new imprint, Day Ones. The first single to be released on said label is theirs, and it’s called ‘Chargie‘. The birth of Day Ones has to do with musical independence, and also giving back. The duo state they are quite thankful for their origins and the early support the industry gave them, and this is an act of returning to said scene. “Day Ones is about starting fresh, but it’s also about paying homage to everything that made Sigma what it is today“, they say. “We’ve been through it all—the highs, the lows, the grind—and now we’re back doing what we love most, making music for the scene that gave us everything. No compromises, no distractions, just pure Drum’n’Bass energy. It feels like coming home“. ‘Chargie’ Day Ones’ first release comes from the bosses themselves. ‘Chargie’ is a powerful single that features the vocals of heavy icons Scrufizzer and Jamakabi, and aims to evoke the darker energy of their early work. The track signals a decisive shift for the duo as they embark on a new chapter, building upon the foundations they established over a decade ago. A fusion of 90s Jungle with flavours of Jump Up and Dancehall, the piece stands out as a fine wine: in an industry often saturated with over-the-top arrangements, heavily distorted leads, and often very heavily packed frequency spectrums at all times, this tune comes as a refresher, and a reminder that there’s another way: a more stripped-back way of producing DnB which, once the method has been mastered, can deliver the same power and rhythm that modern-day DnB looks up to. Chargie’ is the perfect way to kick things off with Day Ones. It’s raw, unapologetic, and takes us right back to our roots. We wanted to create something that reflects where drum’n’bass is now but still has that gritty energy that drew us to the genre in the first place. Working with Scrufizzer and Jamakabi was sick—they brought such a unique vibe, and this track is all about setting the tone for what’s next. -Sigma Listen to Sigma‘s brand-new ‘Chargie’, by hitting the ‘Play‘ button on the Spotify player below. 6. The organizers of Sol Fest, an electronic music and arts festival in North Florida, have announced an indefinite hiatus. They announced the decision today in an emotional statement, reflecting on the challenges, triumphs and the spirit of the independent festival, which launched three years ago. "The road hasn't been easy, but your support has been the driving force that kept us going," the statement reads. "We want to extend our deepest appreciation to the entire team, volunteers, friends, and family who helped us bring this to life." Sol Fest, known for its bass-focused lineups and deep-rooted sense of community, faced significant hurdles throughout its tenure. Despite the indefinite hiatus, the festival's proprietors haven't pulled the plug entirely. "This isn’t goodbye, Sol Fam," they wrote. "For now, hold your loved ones close and keep the Sol Fest spirit alive!" Last year's Sol Fest featured headlining performances by Rezz, CloZee, LSDREAM, Bob Moses, Dabin, Dr. Fresch, Elderbrook, G Jones, Lettuce and EDM.com Class of 2024 artist Of The Trees. 13. Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) have reached a new multi-year agreement aimed at reshaping their partnership and potentially, artist royalties. The deal is expected to introduce a tiered subscription model with benefits for “superfans.” While specifics are not yet fully disclosed. The agreement signals a shift in how music streaming services and record labels might collaborate going forward. Spotify superfan perks and royalties adjustments UMG’s vision, known as “Streaming 2.0“, is where these talks started. It suggests a “Super-Premium” subscription. Which could include perks like early access to music, exclusive deluxe editions, hi-res audio, and even opportunities for artist Q&As. This model caters to the most passionate fans, allowing them to experience music in new, immersive ways. Unsurprisingly, It looks like the profit-hungry Spotify board of directors is ready to pull the trigger. Additionally, the deal could result in higher royalty rates for songwriters, a long-standing concern. The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) had previously criticized Spotify for royalty changes, which led to a formal complaint to the FTC. With this agreement, hopefully, Spotify may address some of these concerns by offering improved rates to creators. This agreement marks Spotify’s first direct deal with a music publisher since the passage of the Music Modernization Act in 2018. While Sony Music has expressed concerns about Spotify’s royalty structure, it is unclear if they are doing the same. The shift could inspire other publishers to join in as well, further altering royalties in the streaming industry. What could this mean for streaming and royalties? The agreement between Spotify and UMG highlights a potential shift in the way streaming platforms and music publishers engage with both fans and creators. If successful, this model could lead to more customized subscription experiences for listeners and improved financial conditions for artists. The ongoing developments in this partnership could influence future changes in how music streaming services operate and how songwriters are compensated in the broader industry. In contrast, this could set up heavier responsibilities for musicians who want to opt into higher royalties. Then, just like Spotify has done in the past, negatively change those rates. For example, In 2023, Spotify adjusted its mechanical royalty rates, which are the payments made to songwriters and publishers for streams of their music. The company’s consistent adjustments have sparked a backlash from both songwriters and publishers. Both parties argue that Spotify’s business model and compensation structure benefit the platform while hurting creators. In response, Spotify has made some adjustments to appease critics, but tensions remain regarding fair compensation for the artists who drive the service’s growth. 14. Club Space isn't just known for its balanced diet of Red Bull-vodkas and sleepless nights—it's also dishing out a life-altering grilled cheese sandwich that's turning exhausted ravers into food critics by sunrise. The iconic Miami club serves up "a symphony of crisp, buttery bread and molten cheese—where simplicity meets pure indulgence," per its downstairs restaurant, Space Odyssey. While the understated nature of the sandwich may come across as deceptive when taking into account its hefty $17 price tag, many are taking to social media to share their honest reviews of the late-night—err, early morning—snack. One customer rated the grilled cheese a solid 7 out of 10, but their review must be taken with a grain of salt since they skipped out on the holy grail of condiments: the Miami hot sauce. Even without the dip, though, she raved about the melty cheese, crispy bread and mini dill gherkin pickles, which added the perfect crunch. View the original article to see embedded media. Another grilled cheese connoisseur decided the value was fair considering the cost, proving that this isn't just another hyped-up, Instagrammable snack. He felt that Space's grilled cheese offered a solid portion size and a top-tier cheese pull. All things considered, he rated the grilled cheese a 4.2 out of 5 because—as we all know—decimal points make food reviews much more legit. View the original article to see embedded media.
