RÜFÜS DU SOL deliver fourth studio album, ‘Surrender’
The next chapter in the storied history of RÜFÜS DU SOL is here as the trio release their fourth studio album, Surrender. Surrender isn’t a whole lot of innovation for the group, bringing back familiar motifs and melodies to each of their songs. It is, however, an incredible display of growth as each track has a noticeable sheen that was not as prevalent on previous works. Part of that could be due to RÜFÜS experimenting with collaboration for the first time, welcoming Curtis Harding to the fold on the album’s title track as well as an LA based children’s choir on both the title track and “Make It Happen.” It is this depth of field that results in something that feels more human and heartfelt than ever before. The album arrives in the run up to a whirlwind touring and festival season for the band, which has already seen them perform parts of the new project on world renowned stages such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Austin City Limits, and Governors Ball. With festival stints at III Points Miami and Outside Lands San Francisco still to come, Surrender gives RÜFÜS DU SOL fans a unique opportunity to accompany them into their world. “Surrender is a message of personal maturity and of a deep connection to their community, as RÜFÜS DU SOL find themselves comfortably expressing their personal pains and heartaches for all to bear witness,” reads a description of the album. Alix Perez & EPROM Release New Shades EP, “The Dance Of Death”
The alluring duo of Alix Perez and EPROM as Shades receives its 5th EP release, The Dance Of Death, today. Four tracks paint the picture through the project, featuring a heavy concoction of innovative bass sounds. The EP opens with “The Corruption,” the project’s only single. Here listeners are introduced to the heavy atmosphere and haunting modulation of The Dance of Death. “The Creation” follows the same eerie soundscape narrative, allowing staticky, glitched out synths to ring in and out of reverberation. The backend of the track billows in volume, lending to a soundtrack like creation from the producers. “Eternal Rain Descending” launches itself with a foreboding intro, which presents a chopped vocal loop through the madness of sound. This carries listeners to the first drop, and likewise an explosion of atomized sounds and samples. The EP wraps up with “The Last Judgement,” which enraptured listeners in a looped build before delivering a grunge, industrial drop to make for an ‘Instant Rewind” for listeners. “The Dance Of Death is a continuation in our vision and sound as SHADES. Refining and pushing our experimentation in audio design.” — SHADES Listen to the full EP below. This article was first published on Your EDM. Your EDM Premiere: Viper Snaps up Two New Dancefloor Classics from AL/SO and Synth System
Monstercat, Audioporn, Korsakov Music and Mainframe Recordings darling High Maintenance has been quiet lately, with his last original work out in May of 2020, the dancefloor collab EP, also with AL/SO (love that pun), Hypersonic. Now we know why: the cheeky chap from Brighton has only gone and rebranded as Synth System, quietly releasing his first remix of Sub Focus’s “Last Jungle” on RAM in August. While the newly minted Synth System has been retooling on the DL, however, Korsakov Music’s A&R guru AL/SO has been as loud as ever, having released his first solo EP, the mad and fast metal-inspired Toaster Bath in August as well and touring all over the slowly re-opening EU during the summer and even landing in the UK in September (as if that poor island hasn’t suffered enough already). The UK is where the two dancefloor heavy hitters finished up their new collab tracks, “City Lights” featuring vocalist Eidna and “Extra” and signed them to Viper. It’s easy to see why Matrix & Futurebound’s imprint wanted the melodic festie anthem that is “City Lights”: with the punch of Synth System’s synthy synths, a fireworks display of a snare and a composition structure that somehow straddles classical and pop, there will be no escaping this track on the dancefloor this fall and winter. Why would you want to? The haunting, strained melody is the perfect emotive punchback to where the music world has been in the past year and the explosive drops promise all the places we’ve still yet to go. The wild card on this dual single and our chosen premiere today is the b side “Extra.” Once again heavy on the synths, this track, while still concise and made for dancing, has a lot of complex sound design that the tech heads will love. Right away in the intro, the opening synths have a fun and none-too-easy-to-craft 80s throwback vaporwave sound to them. You can practically feel the 80s tween movie opening credits rolling. The drop is introduced by a sassy, singular female vox sample – perhaps even a Kardashian (perish the thought) – saying “why are you being so extra” before the track drops into its more ravey and cinematic territory, with the downbeats hitting just right and the synth capable of pulling even the grumpiest wallflower off of said wall to the dancefloor. Viper Recordings · Synth System & AL/SO – Extra [YourEDM Premiere] This is both AL/SO and Synth System’s first release on Viper, on first listen, nay, on first phrase, it’s clear they don’t belong anywhere else. The clean lines of “Extra” and the heart-rending vibes of “City Lights” will keep the vibes going through the colder seasons as they’ll be overplayed at ever rave well into spring. “City Lights”/”Extra” drop this Friday, October 22 on Viper. Coachella Gives Rare Early Teaser Of Artist For Next Year — Swedish House Mafia
Coachella is generally pretty tight-lipped about who’s playing its festival until the complete lineup drops. Though fans can sometimes make educated guesses based on gaps in tour schedules, it’s usually frowned upon for any artist to explicitly come out and say they’re playing the festival until the official announcement. That being said, Coachella is jumping the gun on their own with a teaser for Swedish House Mafia at this upcoming April festival. The trio’s logo has been seen all over the US lately, more than hinting at an incoming tour, especially as they’re due to drop an album before the end of the year. So Swedish House Mafia playing Coachella is not a huge surprise in and of itself, just that the festival is leading the charge. Check out the teaser below and let us know if you think there’s any other way to interpret it. pic.twitter.com/ovK0xEu7Ln — Coachella (@coachella) October 20, 2021 Image by Hannes Soderlund This article was first published on Your EDM. Narayan Returns With Infectious Track “Lonely” Alongside John Dakolias
With a handful of releases this year already, and massive acclaim from some of the industry’s leading publications, there is no doubt that Indian talent Narayan has set his sights high for the rest of 2021 and beyond. Just recently he was enlisted to create sample packs for renowned companies CR2 Records and Audentity Records, as well as performed a mix for Taz Network which went live on a YouTube Charity show put up by SuicideSheep with American nonprofit organization TWLOHA. Now, Narayan is back to share his shiny dance gem: “Lonely” in collaboration with John Dakolias. Narayan and John Dakolias’ unmatched chemistry is placed at the forefront of the spotlight, with a strong vocal performance fitting like a glove on top of Narayan’s tropical and shimmery instrumental, making up for a pop banger to raise your frequencies. MunchKing And CC is Dreaming’s Single “Passive Aggressive” Receives The Remix Treatment From Crankdat
Not often are rising artists given the chance to receive a massive remix that might change their career’s trajectory, yet for MunchKing and CC is Dreaming that is exactly the case, since they just managed to enlist bass maestro Crankdat to re-crank their latest single “Passive Aggressive.” Crankdat has established himself as a force to be reckoned with over the past years, with countless remixes and bootlegs, as well as a strong catalog of bass masterpieces. MunchKing, who has performed alongside the likes of KSHMR, Jauz, and Bassjackers, is quickly rising within the dance music scene with heavy releases contrasted by his bubbly visuals and personality. He is still riding high off the success of his last two singles “Gf’s Bf” and “Attention,” and this new Crankdat remix – that combines trap and future bass in a stunning way – is bound to assist him in reaching a brand new audience. Breaking Down Set Times for EDC Las Vegas 2021
Insomniac just dropped the highly anticipated set times for their flagship event, EDC Las Vegas, and ooh boy, it’s a doozy. There are chart-topping headliners to be found everywhere, insane b2bs all over the place, rare art car performances, and some very tough decisions to be made. But, that’s okay; we’re here to help you figure out the best acts to see and maybe tip the scales on some of the many time conflicts you and/or your squad are sure to encounter. Let’s start with Day 1. Opening ceremonies As appears to be tradition now, Cosmic Meadow will open early for some top notch performances. It’s all about House music to start things off. Friday will see a brief set from House breakout John Summit, as well as a tasty Vintage Culture b2b Solardo set. There’s even more starpower on Saturday, as Sidepiece kick things off, before a special Diplo b2b Lee Foss house set. That should be vibey AF. Finally Blossom and Z-Trip kick things off on Sunday. If you can manage the extended hours, all of these sets are can’t miss. Friday, October 22 Festival gates open at 7 PM, the crowd may be sparse, but there’s still some acts to catch if you can make it up there super early. Frank Walker opens things up at Kinetic Field, and one of Your EDM’s favorites, Moore Kismet, is opening up Cosmic Meadow. If you want some House to start your night off, Lucati is opening up Circuit Grounds. Things really get kicking around 9 PM when Nicky Romero takes over Kinetic Field, Claptone takes the stage at Circuit Grounds, and Born Dirty is kicking at Cosmic Meadow. After that, head over to Basspod for another Your EDM favorite, Sullivan King. It will be a headbanger’s delight for sure. Don Diablo takes over Kinetic at 11:15, but this is where some tough decisions will need to be made. Tchami also occupies the same time slot at Circuit Grounds, while Basspod will be hosting a special Jauz b2b Peekaboo set. The lineup is just too stacked after this. The Chainsmokers play Kinetic at 12:28, Zhu plays Cosmic Meadow at 12:00, NGHTMRE will be lighting up Basspod, and Alison Wonderland will bye playing Circuit Grounds at 12:45. You can’t really go wrong with any choice, I, for one, would love to see some new Chainsmokers music. Once again, there are tough, but clear decisions to be made after that. Alesso takes over Kinetic, Flosstradamus throws down at Cosmic Meadow, and Basspod has what is sure to be an insane Kayzo b2b Knife Party set. I don’t blame you if you’re tired, but there’s still so much more to choose from. If you can make it, Seven Lions, Ghastly, and Wuki will all be throwing down. After that, Vini Vici will close down the main stage, with Nitti Gritti closing out Cosmic Meadow. Saturday, October 23 If you thought Day 1 was loaded, Day 2 is about to rock your world! There’s already a lot of early action with Elephante at Kinetic and ARMNHMR at Circuit Grounds heading into the 8 o’clock hour. Take your pick between the legendary Benny Benassi at Circuit Grounds at 8:45 or trance/bass crossover Jason Ross at Kinetic in the same time slot. If you’re like me the move is to check out Benassi and then check out Oliver Heldens directly afterwards. Once again, the lineup is stacked at this point. Andrew Rayel will be taking over Kinetic in the same time slot, and AC Slater will be hitting Cosmic Meadow at 10 PM. The decisions only get harder from here on out. Stay at Circuit Grounds for Slander? Head over to Kinetic for Alan Walker? Vibe out at Cosmic Meadow with Diplo? There is no wrong decision here. After that is arguably the toughest choice of the weekend. Do you catch Martin Garrix at Circuit Grounds, sure to unleash a bevy of new IDs? Or do you catch the Tiesto at Kinetic? Tiesto always brings it at EDC, and a special guest is almost guaranteed (Karol G, anyone?). Again, regardless of which Dutch superstar you choose to see, you can’t go wrong. If you can believe it, deadmau5 will follow Martin at Circuit Grounds. I, personally, will not be leaving that stage for that time frame. But, there’s still a lot of stuff going on. DJ Snake will be a Kinetic, and he also brings it everytime at EDC. Louis the Child will be playing out their new album at Cosmic Meadow; Excision will be throwing down a Detox set at Basspod, and Ilan Bluestone will be lighting up Quantum Valley. Here’s where the festival lineup starts getting really diverse. As deadmau5’s set ends and DJ Snake plays into the night, you can also check out Charlotte de Witte at Neon Garden, get your trance fix with Ferry Corsten at Quantum Valley. Jauz will take over Circuit Grounds after deadmau5. Shortly after that KSHMR will take the stage at Kinetic. Once again there are many options to close the night. Vintage Culture will shut down Kinetic, 12th Planet will play a throwback set at Basspod, Blanke will be shutting down Circuit Grounds, and Gammer and K?d will be going b2b at Cosmic Meadow for what is sure to be a memorable set. Sunday, October 24 After two absolutely insane days, EDC gives you a chance to catch your breath on Sunday, before, once again, giving you all you can handle at the end of the weekend. If you can make it, there’s still plenty to choose from early on, on Sunday. ARTY opens up Kinetic, Throttle opens up Circuit Grounds, William Black opens up Cosmic Meadow; there are definitely choices. At least as far as I’m concerned, there aren’t really a whole lot of can’t miss sets during the early period on Sunday. My first can’t miss set is Eric Prydz, and he doesn’t even take the stage until Midnight. Use Sunday to explore the festival grounds and check out an Art Car set. After this, there are major choices to be made. You could stay at Circuit Grounds for Rezz, you could go next door to Cosmic Meadow for Zedd. (I still don’t understand why Zedd plays that stage. He’s a mainstage artist with visuals good enough for Circuit Grounds.) Or, Kygo at Kinetic. I haven’t made my choice yet. This is as good as it gets. After that, the only place I’ll be is at Kinetic for Afrojack b2b R3hab. I cannot wait for the mainstage vibes we’ll be getting from those two. If you make it that far, treat yourself to Slander b2b Said the Sky at the mainstage. The immaculate vibes will suit you if you made it that far into the festival. Make sure to download the Insomniac app to plan out your weekend accordingly. Check out this massive, two-hour EDC 2021 Mega Mix to get yourself pumped as well. See you under the Electric Sky! Dabin Releases Third Studio Album, “Between Broken”
I’m sure others might feel differently, but after the last year, 2021 has felt like an opportunity for redemption and growth. Being stuck inside for the better part of a year, and even then once you’re let back out into the world, to see it like… this? It does things to people. And throughout time, music has served as an incredible tool to shed off some of that weight and anxiety, to see yourself and your feelings represented in art, and perhaps identify with something along with others. Dabin didn’t create his new album, Between Broken, with those particular ideals in mind (as he explains below), but in the sense that music is subjective, that’s how it feels to me. And that’s a beautiful thing. “‘Between Broken’ feels like a return to the sounds that inspired me to make music in the first place,” explains Dabin on his third studio album. “I spent years trying to find and develop my own sound and this record felt like I had the means to pay homage to the sounds that pushed me to create my own music. Growing up I’d listen to a lot of acoustic and folk music. Those genres felt so delicate and intimate and that was a feeling I really wanted to replicate in ‘Between Broken.’ You’ll also hear some mid-west emo and pop punk influences sprinkled throughout the album as a nod to the bands that got me through some tough times.” He continues, “The concept behind ‘Between Broken’ alludes to the idea that we are all just this union of memories and experiences. And more often than not, it’s the negative experiences that shape our character and make us stronger. While it’s easy to let the weight of these negative experiences dictate our sense of self, I think it’s the moments in between these experiences, and how we overcome them, that define us and shape us into the people we are today. The time we spend in between these experiences is just as valuable as the experience itself. This is also where the kintsugi imagery came into play. The process of mending broken pieces with gold to create something new and beautiful felt like the perfect way to represent the meaning behind this album. There is inherent value in between the broken moments of our lives and that’s what I wanted to explore in this album.” Listen to Between Broken below, out now via Seeking Blue.
