The Chainsmokers Share Next Single, “iPad,” From Forthcoming Album
The road to their new album continues as The Chainsmokers release their second single of the year, “iPad,” today. Written exclusively by Alex and Drew, “iPad” arrives alongside an official video, directed by Kid Studio, that follows Drew throughout New York City as he navigates the multitude of conflicting emotions that follow ending an unhealthy relationship. “Sometimes you let go just to know where to start,” Drew says. “We wrote this song when I felt like I didn’t have anyone to talk to. It wasn’t that I didn’t have anyone that would listen, but I had reached a level of cognitive dissonance that I felt was unexplainable. I don’t keep a journal so writing this song and the others on this album (and past albums) is my opportunity to organize my thoughts. If you listened to ‘Sick Boy’ you know what I mean. We feel really lucky we get to do it in song form and that you are willing to listen. It’s helped us a lot, so thank you. The next bit of the story is called ‘iPad’ and it’s out now. Thanks for being here.” “iPad” follows the release of first single “High,” which marked the end of a two-year break and launched a new musical era for the band. The track has received rabid response by fans, is already Top 20 at Top 40 and HAC Radio, and has received over 55 Million+ audio and video streams combined since release last month. The band is also set to headline the inaugural Afterparty NFT Art and Music Festival next weekend, which will take place at Las Vegas’ immersive AREA15 venue. Kaskade & deadmau5 New Project Kx5 Debuts with “Escape” feat. Hayla
Over the years, Kaskade and deadmau5 have officially collaborated three times: in 2008 on “I Remember”; in 2014 on “Move For Me”; and in 2016 for “Beneath With Me.” Today, going on six years since their last collaboration and 14 years since their first, the two finally join forces — officially — for their new project Kx5 and first single, “Escape” featuring Hayla. Beginning with stripped-back piano underscoring Hayla’s delicate vocal, “Escape” soon swells into a pulsating electronic soundscape—a testament to the meticulous, multi-layered production that deadmau5 and Kaskade have built their reputations on. The track really takes flight on the anthemic chorus. “What if I escape with you?” Hayla belts over shiny synths. “Is it real, is it just a fantasy? ‘Cause the unknown, the unknown is pulling me.” Look for Kx5 to make its live performance debut at EDC Las Vegas this May. Alison Wonderland releases single and video ‘New Day’ and announces new album “Loner”
Alison Wonderland today announces the release of her 3rd studio album, Loner, set for release on May 6 and available to pre-order now. The pioneering electronic artist and producer also shares her new single from “New Day” from the forthcoming album. After coming through a period of darkness, “New Day” is the sound of Alison falling in love with life and the potential each day holds. The song, which she wrote and produced, seamlessly melds acoustic and ambient elements to create a cinematic soundscape that sets the stage for an illuminating journey. Imbued with an old West vibe, the official video for “New Day” finds Alison on horseback, riding through a barren wilderness. The blindfold covering her eyes would seem to put her at a disadvantage as she encounters formidable adversaries – but when she lifts it, she unleashes a powerful energy. The video was directed by Pete Dons (Halsey, Rüfüs Du Sol, Olivia Rodrigo) and produced by Satien Mehta. Fans who pre-order the Loner digital album will instantly receive “New Day,” “Fear of Dying,” “FUCK U LOVE U” and Alison’s 2020 hit “Bad Things,” which has amassed over 18.6 million combined global streams.Loner is also available for pre-order in CD and LP formats – with a choice of purple, orange and ultra-clear vinyl. Marshmello releases throwback “Before U”, the first single off of his forthcoming album Joytime IV
It’s only been five months since Marshmello’s last single, “Preached” with Lil Dusty G, but for some reason it feels like much longer. Maybe it’s because we were so used to the rapid pace of releases from the masked artist; but either way, “Before U” is out today. Not only does the new single mark the first song from his upcoming Joytime IV album, it will also be a new lobby track on Fortnite after over 100k fans voted for the next Marshmello Lobby Track on vote.marshmellomusic.com. (You can still hear a clip of the other contender, “ReMiNiSce,” on the site at time of publishing.) Both tracks are a throwback to Marshmello’s older style of production from the very first Joytime album six years ago, before all the massive pop collaborations and huge producer team ups. “Before U” is bright and catchy, but very simple. Review: It’s Finally Here! J’Moris Drops ‘Moris Better: Loveless Confessions’ Album
J’Moris has been teasing singles and videos, it seems, since teasing singles has been a thing. His Spotify discography is singles only all the way back to his Blac February album in 2020, though that particular album still feels as fresh as ever. That said, fans better believe Moris Better: Loveless Confessions is fresh2death. Where Blac February was heavy, political and fraught with tracks like “Venting,” “Alien” and “Letter to God,” Loveless Confessions is notably smoother around the edges both in style and substance. J’Moris has really embraced the melodic side of his voice, imbuing his lyrics with R&B, jazz and vocoder flourishes to compliment the chilled out trap and hip hop production by Supamario Beats (except for two tracks, “Work” and “Nana”). Listeners shouldn’t, however, think J’Moris has lost his edge because of this shift in style. The title of the LP, Moris Better: Loveless Confessions is more than just a clever pun. While J’Moris is stating up front that he’s in a better mental state than he was in 2020 in this title and in much of the lyrical content, said lyrical content also still packs a punch. Ever introspective and honest, even with the romantic, smooth R&B player vibes, J’Moris’s work is always designed to make listeners think. We can groove and think, right? The best example of this groove-whilst-pondering acumen is in the album’s title track. Clearly meant to be a bedroom track like many others on Loveless Confessions, this track talks about the nature of modern relationships, the drawing closer while pushing away, the addictive nature of toxic dynamics and the importance of owning up to it. In the midst of the full-on strip club vibes of tracks like “Work,” the romantically charged-but-graphic “Nana” and the heavy stoner vibes of the previously teased “Activated,” it’s this title track and others like “Skeletons” and “A You Thing” that really identify J’Moris’s style: the smooth always disguises the cerebral. With another album’s worth of tracks not on Moris Better: Loveless Confessions, J’Moris is likely to go back to teasing tracks and dropping more videos after this album. It’s not as much of a snapshot than a continuation for this artist, for certain, so while there’s a lot to listen to and appreciate on this album, the next single will probably be coming soon, with even more surprises and definitely just as much heart. Moris Better: Loveless Confessions is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Keep and eye on J’Moris’s YouTube for more videos coming soon. This article was first published on Your EDM. Sofi Tukker Talk New Album, ‘WET TENNIS’ and Global Tour [Interview]
Sofi Tukker are back & taking 2022 by storm with new & exciting music to grace our ears and the highly anticipated announcement of their incoming full studio album WET TENNIS dropping April 29th. The first releases to the WET TENNIS album include the super danceable and highly catchy, ‘Original Sin’ and now their most recent collaboration with Mahmut Orhan, ‘Forgive Me’ featuring emotional violin melodies & dark mysterious tones. With a sonically diverse and colour exploding album on the horizon and a massive US/European tour taking place this summer, we had a moment to catch up with these two super talented musicians. A unique opportunity to hear what they’ve been up to and dive into the deeper details for this next exciting chapter into their blossoming musical catalogue. First tell us a little backstory behind the latest track ‘Original Sin’ and its inspiration and creation? We wrote original sin in the middle of the pandemic. We realized that for us and for a lot of people who were stuck inside during quarantine, we often took out our frustration and anxiety about the world on the people we love the most. We were making all sorts of mistakes, not because there’s anything inherently wrong with us but because we were living through a troubled time. It’s a song about having grace with ourselves. Remembering that we aren’t born sinners. We don’t have to repent. And we don’t have to apologize for our desires. We are simply a bunch of freaks trying our best. Original sin features an incredible music video featuring lush nature, fluorescent tennis gear and powerful colour schemes, where do you guys draw creative ideas for your music videos and how does this process go about? Do you have certain creative friends which direct and help with these videos? How much creative collaboration with other artists takes place in your videos? We had an incredible crew of creative collaborators and friends for this video. We first came up with the concept together in a room with our creative director for the project, Amber Park, and our stylist, designer Johnny Wujek. We then brought on the genius Aerin Moreno, who is the director for the video. We knew we wanted the video to be like the garden of eden of the Wet Tennis world. And we knew we wanted to be wearing super colorful bright tennis outfits. It came about from a lot of conversations, and images and ideas bouncing back and forth between us all. It took us a while to nail the video, actually. The video took us a while to perfect because we wanted to find the perfect balance between the Wet Tennis world and aesthetic and also staying true to the lyrics and vibe of Original Sin. We love the WET TENNIS acronym for the LP: When Everyone Tries to Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe. This sounds like it has a deeply conscious meaning behind it, can you guys tell more about the personal spiritual, emotional or conscious journey that has inspired such a powerful message? During the pandemic, every day we were faced with a choice: either we can let this cripple us, let this make us sad and depressed and anxious… or we can make the most of it. We can dance it out in community. We can pour ourselves into DJing and building the freak fam. While negative things are bound to happen, we have a choice to not get stuck in it. We were so inspired by the freak fam, the community of people that joined us every single day for our livestream sets, and their capacity for positivity and optimism. A lot of the music comes from this place, too. We wanted the album to feel and sound fun and bright, but underneath that is a lot of conscious choice and intention. What kinds of sound design, production and types of tracks can we expect for the rest of the WET TENNIS Album? We wrote a LOT of music during the pandemic but we intentionally put the songs on the album that overall felt really optimistic and hopeful. If we have a more introspective moody track on the album, then it’s always followed by a bright dance party track. We have some more acoustic style tracks on it and a lot of house music. We were inspired by DJing every day and there’s a bunch of nods to the freak fam throughout. There are a couple collaborations but mostly it’s just the venn diagram of both of our brains bouncing ideas and sounds back and forth. It’s so exciting to see the WET TENNIS live show hitting the US, Europe Canada and Australia, what advice would you have to stay so fresh on tour, keeping your personal energy high and to thriving with tour life demands? We work really hard to thrive on tour. We treat ourselves like professional athletes. Before each show, we spend an hour and a half warming up and working out — and we always cool down, stretch and ice after the shows. We make sure to sleep and nap as much as we can, Soph is sober, and we stay eating healthy. Our rider is basically fruits and vegetables and this tour we are gonna bring an air fryer on the tour bus :). Gotta stay fresh to put on the best possible show every night! We absolutely loved ‘The Freak Farm’ livestream experience which has continued to be such an amazing experience throughout lockdown and beyond connecting people for the love of your music and creating deeper connection during such a difficult time, what have been your greatest personal takeaways from this experience? How did this change you guys as people? Did it change your conceptions of how you can connect with fans differently? The freak fam feels like a miracle. We went through what could have been the worst and loneliest time of our lives, and instead it was filled with community. We had never felt so connected to people all around the world. Everyone really became like family. We were there for each other, and continue to be now, through so much hardship and life changes. Whereas before the pandemic, people would gather at our shows, and maybe make a friend or two, people connected day after day, really getting to know each other–and not just in specific cities. It really became a global community. We now really understand the power of consistency, and the power of a collective in lifting each other up. We are just still at the beginning of 2022 which is hopefully going to be a new year and a break from the pandemic narrative, would you guys share with us some personal goals you have for this year or maybe even some new resolutions and whether you are keeping to them? We have so many goals for this year! We are going to be touring the world and being with people in person, but we want to make sure to maintain the online connection with the freak fam. We want to put on the best possible show every night, and really put on the most unique show, unlike any we’ve ever seen or heard of. It’s part live show–part game. It’s super participatory and we want everyone to leave that night saying, wow that was one of the best nights of my life. I felt so connected and joyful and alive. With the music landscape changing so drastically since the pandemic what advice would you guys have for producers, artists or duos out there now that are pushing to break their music to a bigger audience? This advice has remained the same throughout our whole career and we always try and take our own advice: make music you love. Don’t make music for some imaginary listener or some imaginary idea of what you think people might like. Make music that you genuinely want to listen to and would be thrilled to play on stage night after night for the rest of time. What would be your message of inspiration for the freak fam and music lovers for 2022? The acronym for our album: When everyone tries to evolve nothing negative is safe. Know that you always have a choice. Shit is gonna happen. You can either grow and evolve from it–or not. There are people out there who are here to support you and believe in you. There are other freaks here to make you feel less alone in that process, who will inspire you and hold you accountable to making all of life feel like a growth opportunity. Since bursting on the scene with popular remixes for Pink, Khalid, Kelly Clarkson, Tinashe, and Greyson Chance, Frank Pole has created quite the buzz. He also proved his worth with sensational singles, racking up more than 50 million streams on Spotify alone. Italian DJ and producer Teo Mandrelli has made a name for himself creating future house with heavy yet smooth basslines and catchy melodies. After honing his chops as a DJ and playing gigs across Europe, he started producing bootlegs of everyone from Moby to Coldplay, and eventually began writing original tunes. Jimmy Pé Drops Thundering Bass House Single, “Pé Is Not Dead!” [Slow Roads Records]
Jimmy Pé won’t mind calling himself a broken beat explorer. His cut-up electronica is gradually finding its way to a worldwide audience, already catching the ear of The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Baauer, Dj Craze, Tokimonsta, UZ, Lefto, Daedelus and many others. He released music on labels such as Slow Roast Records, Quality Goods Records, Saturate Records, and others. Now, he’s back with a thundering new single, “Pé Is Not Dead!” that is utterly irresistible. Pé’s talent in the studio shines on this one, seamlessly cutting up vocal samples that cut in and out of a groovy house rhythm, powered by a wubby bass. In addition to the single, he’s also released a music video to accompany that’s weird, outrageous, and hypnotic all at the same time. The story expressed is of two reckless, unhinged killers, who get their fix through taking the lives of victims via their lethally produced music. After successfully accomplishing their goal twice, it is the 3rd potential victim where the story takes an unexpected turn. See it for yourself below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Krewella Releases Emotionally Charged 3rd Studio Album, “The Body Never Lies”
It’s only been two years since Krewella’s last album, zer0, but it feels like so much longer. Part of that is probably an effect of the pandemic, which effectively stole two years from much of our lives — another part is Krewella only released three songs since 2020, “Never Been Hurt,” “No Control,” and “I’m Just A Monster Underneath, My Darling,” all of which are featured on their new, third album, The Body Never Lies. The album was created from an intimate, internal space of Krewella’s self-reflection, exploring impermanence, the oddity of human experience, their relationship to the world around them as women in a male-dominated society. The Body Never Lies title hints at the range of emotions within the LP, with each track as unique and varied as our feelings themselves. “Traces” serves as a haunting opener, quickly followed by a series of heavier tracks, including the drum & bass-inspired “In The Water” and the angry yet touching “War Forever.” Krewella hits a different vibe with the last three tracks, which explore the darker and more tender side of the human experience. “The clench of a fist, the pit in your stomach, the fluid in your veins; the body is a sensor, messenger, keeper of stories, a fortress of the soul, an instrument of knowing, a rocket ship to other worlds. Every cell, pore, and bone recalls the past, absorbs the present, and senses the future. ‘The Body Never Lies’ is at times an angry, sometimes feverish, but always a euphoric conversation about feeling, remembering, and existing in our individual vessels that encase our soul and memories.” – Krewella Prince Fox was brought on to mix the album, leaving every track sounding crisp and clear to match the emotional tone and varied influence in each track. New Artist Spotlight: Cosmopolis Combine Arty Post Rock With Electronic Sound Design for a Smoother Entre Into their Dark World [Video]
Sometimes here at Your EDM, we like to check out the borderlands of electronic music for a while to see how this universe is creating itself at its edges. Sort of a musical Slab City, if you will. Sometimes in that fringe yet endlessly creative space, artists dwell that are excellent but possibly not quite electronic enough for YEDM, but we watch them nonetheless. Post punk/art rock band Cosmopolis is one of those acts who were just on that leading edge of electronica who, with their latest industrial-tinged single “Nixon-Manson,” has pushed their way into the electronica consciousness, and you’d better believe we’re here for it. “Nixon-Manson” is only Cosmopolis’ fourth single since the trio, based in three different and geographically widespread cities (Brussels, Brisbane and London) but their style is already well-developed and polished. From their first single “God Hotel” in mid-2020, their trippy, semi-psychedelic style of merging guitars with psychobilly-inspired sound design was unique enough for a load of listeners and press to take notice. Developing along that post rock and post punk line, the haunting, melodic and slightly shoegzey “Sécheresse” and the minimal yet heavy Waits-or-Cave-inspired “The Distances” also contained that ambient electronic flare that once again piqued the interest of crossover music fans to see where they’d go next. Now we have an answer in “Nixon-Manson,” a decidedly EDM-y offering which dropped on Cosmopolis’ Bandcamp page last month. Hovering on the arty edge of industrial and the Love and Rockets Edge of goth, “Nixon-Manson” does a good job of showing Cosmopolis’ compositional bones, which are rooted in the classical and theatrical. Even though the song changes tempos, beat structures and even genres quite a bit along its journey to give it that arty, post rock illusion of organized chaos, it’s clear all the parts of the track were plotted meticulously along a score sheet (or screen, more likely). They would have to be, given the number of moving parts and the chaotic crescendo at the end. When the eerie, droning vox are the main grounding force of a track, you know it’s got to be meticulously designed. While it’s nice to see Cosmopolis firmly in the electronica camp now, it seems clear with their work so far that “Nixon-Manson” is not necessarily a watchword of them moving that way permanently. With a style as fluid with theirs and clear talent to make almost limitless sound ideas happen, we can’t really predict where they’ll go next, but that’s the fun of Slab City, isn’t it? You never know what you’re going to see when you venture out that way, but you know it’s always going to be impressive. “Nixon-Manson” is out now and can be streamed or purchased on Cosmopolis’ Bandcamp page. Check out their YouTube channel for more intense videos. This article was first published on Your EDM. Calvin Harris Finally Teases ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol 2’ After Five Years
In 2017, Calvin Harris made a massive statement releasing Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1, featuring a literal who’s-who of collaborators including Frank Ocean, Future, Khalid, Nicki Minaj, Kehlani, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, John Legend, Ariana Grande, ScHoolboy Q, and more. And then… nothing. It seemed like the ‘Vol 1’ was simply an extraneous afterthought for years, with no sign that any further volume would ever be coming. In 2018, he even tweeted that he was “moving on” from the sound, though that tweet has been deleted and now we know why. Vol 2 is gonna be mad — Calvin Harris (@CalvinHarris) March 3, 2022 Predictably, the tweet ignited his fandom, but presumably extended far beyond even. The album, or EP, whatever you want to call it, was so pop heavy and impressive that it is still one of his best releases altogether with over two billion streams between all the songs. Two of those songs, “Slide” and “Feels,” make up around 80% of those streams. Stay tuned for more news on Vol 2, but for now you can listen to Vol 1 again below. Nicky Romero and Almero Drop New House Heater “So Much Love”
Nicky Romero is keeping it going with another house-heater, “So Much Love.” This time, Nicky teams up with French producer (and Protocol veteran) Almero for an energetic piano house tune that has major old school vibes. Once again, Nicky Romero steps outside of the sounds his fans might know him for. But, the results are well worth it. “So Much Love” opens up with some piano chords rising in the background. That familiar buzzing sound that opens up old house tunes is also present. From there, the vocals come in quickly as the piano notes get elevated in the mix. After a slight buildup, the drop features the piano chords over an utterly danceable four-on-the-floor beat. There’s even some light disco elements to make the track extra groovy. Check out the latest single from Nicky Romero & Almero, “So Much Love,” out now on Protocol. This article was first published on Your EDM. Track Review: Nick De La Hoyde Doubles Down on the Pop for His First Single of 2022 [Gatacombe Music] [Lyric Video]
Since Nick De La Hoyde established his dedicated EDM/lofi trio D.E.L with his brothers Matt and Timm, it seems he’s decided to focus more on the pop end of things with his solo work, at least for now. While D.E.L focuses on sound design, EDM beats and ravey composition, Nick’s last few singles have been more pop-leaning, albeit still beautifully produced with the help of those same brothers. “Devotion” is the latest example of the heady, almost ballad-like vibes this musician is capable of conjuring. The last track You EDM looked at from Nick and his brothers, “About U,” came as a double release with a D.E.L track called “Yoko,” and it’s clear in both those tracks there’s a bit of mingling of styles. With the last track of the year, however, there seems to be a conscious shift to more indie pop vibes. “No Sense” was a look at anxiety from inside one’s own head and the swirling thoughts that can lead to being overwhelmed. Certainly resonant with the bulk of the western world at the moment as a concept, “No Sense” has a Twenty One Pilots’ “Stressed Out” vibe that, while it uses some electronic production methods, lands squarely on the side of indie pop. Written by all three De La brothers, “Devotion” is only pop in terms of composition, really and it’s interesting to see them delve even deeper into indie pop. Hearkening back to indie pop’s inception with bands like fellow Aussies INXS (there’s a strong “Never Tear Us Apart” vein here), “Devotion” is bluesy, dramatic, melodic and orchestral in addition to indie and poppy. Probably one of the biggest tracks in terms of sound saturation the trio have made to-date, fans will swear they’ve heard it in a blockbuster movie. Nick, Timm and Joseph’s work has always been high quality but this is a new echelon. If “Devotion” isn’t in a film by summer, that’s the industry’s loss. It seems that separating their projects into D.E.L and Nick’s “solo” stuff has freed up the De La Hoydes to play with style, substance and genre on both sides of things, though fans probably shouldn’t get too comfortable with one being EDM and the other being pop. If anything it looks like the brothers will be folding even more mashups into their work, and no one said there wouldn’t be crossover work again. It just seems all part of the ever-expanding De La Hoyde pop/indie pop/EDM/blues/lofi/whatever else empire, and we’re definitely here for it. “Devotion” is out now on Gatacombe Music and can be streamed or purchased here. Bensley Releases Next Electrifying Single With UKF, “Roll The Dice”
With every release, Bensley proves time and again that he is a growing force to be reckoned with. We caught onto the Canadian producer with his debut album, Next Generation, all the way back in 2015 but he’s experienced a significant resurgence especially in the past couple of years. Last year he released his hit, “That Feeling,” including a positively delectable house edit and the hits haven’t stopped there. Out today is his new single on UKF, “Roll The Dice.” The song sounds like it has huge influences from the Cross The Line-era of Camo & Krooked, which is not only hard to pull off but one of the highest compliments. Catchy vocals and an even catchier melody drive this single from start to finish and keep the energy pumping. Check it out below (get it here), and be sure to catch him for his US debut next month with Brownies & Lemonade in Los Angeles. This article was first published on Your EDM. ODESZA Surprises Fans With Next Album Single, “Better Now” with MARO
Just a little under a month since ODESZA’s grand return with “The Last Goodbye” featuring Bettye LaVette, the duo are back and surprising fans with their second album single, “Better Now” with MARO. All it took was “How about one more?” on Twitter for the fanbase to, once again, be roused from its slumber with yet another incredible single. “Better Now” is new, sonically, for the Washington-duo, with elements similar to the likes of Digitalism, Glass Animals, or RAC. “It’s funny because we tried so many different collaborations with vocalists in varying genres to try to find the right fit for this song when we first made it, but for whatever reason nothing felt right,” said the duo about the track. “We’ve been big fans of MARO’s and when we sent her a short handful of demos, this was the one she resonated with and we knew she was going to do something really special with it. Truthfully, you would have to ask MARO the meaning of this tune, but to us, ‘Better Now’ is about the realization that putting yourself out there is always worth it in the end.” Listen below!
