Nero return as a full trio for first time in 5 years at Red Rocks [FULL SET]
It’s been a long time since Nero performed as a full trio, with Joe Ray, Dan Stephens, and Alana Watson taking the stage together. Since around 2018, Joe Ray has been taking full reign of the solo Nero DJ sets as Dan and Alana got married and had their first child in 2018, the same year they also debuted their own side project, The Night. Joseph Ray also began releasing solo material on Anjunadeep that same year. This past weekend, the trio reunited at Red Rocks supporting deadmau5 on the latest We Are Friend5 tour. Even better, they brought back their classic stage production, featuring the large diamond in the back with two LED walls bordering the DJ duo as Alana takes center stage with her vocal performance. During the set, they played out their new, unreleased ID with RL Grime from his recent Halloween XI set and Second Sky performances, as well as a few more of their own IDs spaced throughout. Fresh Trap Hop and R&B From J’Moris Sees a Step Up in Tech
There’s something that hits different with Texas trap, hip hop and R&B artist J’Moris’s latest two songs. Released recently in late October, it’s not just the fact that he’s flexed his singing muscle in the steamy R&B track “N.A.K.E.D.” Produced by Anywaywell, who’s worked with J’Moris on a number of other tracks, “Jelly (You Thing Pt. 2)” and “N.A.K.E.D” display even cleaner tech than usual, making them two of J’Moris’s best tracks to date. As the parenthetical part of its title implies, “Jelly” is a continuation of J’Moris’s anthem to haters, “You Thing,” released on his February Moris Better: Loveless Confessions album. It’s one of his most popular tracks according to Spotify, but more success tends to attract more jealousy, so it’s not surprise that there’s a part two here. Snappy and one of the more energetically-spit lyrical sets in the J’Moris catalog, the beat is trap spliced with classic hip hop, the syncopation perfectly matching the verse. It seems J’Moris and Anywaywell were really in sync with this track, as the beat rolls through the track, adding to the story being told. With its super-clean sound design, it’s not surprising “Jelly” already has some of the highest stream numbers for J’Moris on Spotify. As mentioned the silky bedroom track “N.A.K.E.D” shows J’Moris reprising his R&B singer role from “Nana,” another track from Moris Better. A slightly simpler track vocally, “N.A.K.E.D” is no less gratuitous than “Nana” but it’s a bit smoother and more soulful than its predecessor. The smoothness short of softens the sharp edges of the sexual lyrics, making a balance track despite the content. At first listen, it seems as if the trrack is also smooth, classic R&B, but the phrase transitions have some unexpected trap stylings which make “N.A.K.E.D” also a dance track. It’s incredibly versatile and again shows a step up in production for the duo of Anywaywell and J’Moris whil also staying true to their trap roots. Inspired by UK grime and garage, a lot of rappers and hip hop artists have been including partially sung vocals in their work lately. Usually these are half-rapped half-sung and meant to harmonize with the music, but that’s not what J’Moris is doing on “N.A.K.E.D.” he’s got a powerhouse of an R&B voice and when he uses it, he goes for it full-on. With the stepped-up tech of these two tracks, J’Moris with Anywaywell could see themselves reaching an even wider audience organically, without compromising their style. New Artist Spotlight: Gem FM and his ‘Sonic Boom’ of Vintage Instrumentals
Electronic/instrumental artist James Freeman might be fairly new to releasing, but he’s already put out an impressive number of releases since he creatied the “flexicble musical entity” that is Gem FM. Since 2021, he’s released four full albums and a smattering of singles under the moniker. With a basis in blues guitar and a Ratatat-like composition style of merging analog and digital sounds, his new Sonic Boom album shows him stepping up the electonic aspect of his style, with some interesting results. While producing the new album, my studio monitoring situation received a significant technical upgrade. This helped tremendously in fine-tuning my engineering and mastering efforts. I think Sonic Boom represents my best work to date with regard to my mixing and engineering. Having said that, I acknowledge that there will always be room for improvement. This updgare not only shows in the imrpoved electronic prpduction quality of the work on Sonic Boom but in the creativity of songwriting and incorporating more dance elements than Gem FM’s previous works. This album goes far beyond a beat paired with a guitar, and Freeman says what was originally meant to be an EP turned into a full concept album, inspired by vintage 808 style and EDM. With track names like “SwagR,” “4banger” and “Slide on Down,” Freeman’s certainly got the EDM lingo down. Listeners expecting some sort of punishing dubstep beat will have to expand their ideas of a “banger” pretty quickly, as we’re still very much in fusion territory. The electronic composition on most of the tracks, while much mroe prevalent than in previous iterations of Gem FM’s sound, is still there largely to feature the instrumentals. On “4banger,” for example, an 80s style synthpop beat and new wave haromines serve to be the gounding force for a floating panflute line which flitters about the staff, also accentuated by electronic manipulation. “Serrated,” meanwhile, has a sort of tropical beat with a digital synth of a sitar, played like a classical Beethoven piano and album closer “Slide on Down” has a sort of Zappa-like chaos which captures a great sense of musical play. Talk about fusion. Sonic Boom is the first album whicn doesn’t feature Freeman’s signature blues guitar in any meaningful way, and this shows the artist pushing out of his comfort zone. With this album, it’s clear Freemand as Gem FM is ready to experiment even more with sounds, and considering how diverse his work already is, “flexible music entity” is indeed the right descriptor for this project. Music With A Powerful Message: Barron S Releases Tech House Inspired Single ‘TKO’
Barron S is best described as a one part fiery red-head and a two part TOTAL music nerd. The female’s talents and relentless passion have rewarded her with quite the opportunities thus far in her young career. To name a few, she was featured as DJ on Rihanna’s Anti World Tour, has opened for Electro Funk duo Chromeo, House DJ & Producer Sharam Jey, and Las Vegas DJ KnowleDj, and she’s spun for over 500,000 people at Vancouver’s Pride Parade. And Barron S made history back in 2018 when she became the first female DJ in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks. From 2018 to 2021, she held both In-Arena DJ and Music Director positions with the team. Fast forward to today, Barron S’ independent music career is starting catch wind and she just dropped a new song on October 13th. The new single titled ‘TKO’ is passionate tech house banger that’ll leave fans dancing, in thought, and wanting another play. Having a dance track that incorporated a powerful message was important for Barron S in her new single. The message behind ‘TKO’ is about choosing to opt-out of the patriarchy. “When I found myself working in the heart of the boys’ club, I saw limitless possibilities for change and progress,” said Barron S, about the inspiration behind her song. “After movements like ‘Me Too’ jumped into mainstream consciousness, I thought society was ready to become accountable for the inequalities which oppress women on a daily basis. But after being shut out, shut down and shut up time and time again, I realized how damaging these work environments have been to my mental and emotional health. Drake & 21 Savage sample Daft Punk’s “One More Time” for “Circo Loco” on new collab album
Daft Punk, for as much sampling as they did in their own work, might be one of the most sampled artists themselves. Hip hop especially loves using loops and sometimes entire melodies from their tracks, as Drake and 21 Savage just did on “Circo Loco” off their new collaborative album, Her Loss. The song alludes to Tory Lanez’s alleged shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, in which Drake raps, “This bitch lie about getting shots, but she still a stallion/She don’t even get the joke but she still smiling.” The thinly veiled allusion wasn’t lost on Megan who, without naming names, called out the lines on Twitter. San Pacho Drops Incredible EP, ‘As Long As We Got House’ [Terminal Underground]
San Pacho is becoming a staple name not only in Matroda’s Terminal Underground imprint, but in the tech house scene at large. Since the birth of the project in 2019, San Pacho has released songs on a variety of respected labels, such as Confession, Insomniac Records, Dim Mak, and UKF. His mesmerizing tracks have been supported by the likes of Tiësto, Diplo, David Guetta, Vintage Culture, Chris Lake and hundreds of other DJs. Building off of this success, he’s now released his debut EP, ‘As Long As We Got House‘. The compilation features the recent house heaters of “Vale”, “Party People”, and global phenom “Amor”. President Biden announces plans to tackle “junk” fees, including concerts, airlines, and more
No one would have ever described the ticket-buying experience as “fun,” but these days it’s more tiresome and annoying than ever thanks to the existence of hidden fees, transaction fees, digital fees, and more. These “junk” fees have become the aim of a new crackdown by President Biden. These junk fees apply to more than just concerts, including banks, airlines, cable companies and other industries, as well. Writes CNBC: He cited processing fees for concert tickets, “resort fees” at hotels, “excessive” credit card late fees, airline booking fees and termination charges to keep consumers from switching cable or internet plans as some of the fees the administration is tackling. At the White House Press Conference, President Biden was joined by Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra and FTC Chair Lina Khan. III Points and the Three Rules to Hosting a Music Festival [Event Review]
It sucks when you wake up the next day back at home after a music festival. Picture this. You coordinated with ideal friends to get off work early, what sets to see, and who the designated driver will be every night. Then you get there. Past the security and the entrance, you start to see eye-popping fashion you won’t see anywhere else. You hear some of the smaller stages playing a song you’ve never heard before but that will catch up with you by Day 2. You start to explore this multi-million dollar playground built for your appearance. Right as you start dancing to the first set, the time starts to pass. And then, you’re home in your bed. It’s over. You’re sore and thinking of calling off from work tomorrow. The day after the music festival feels like a true loss. You knew it was a fleeting moment, but it felt like the biggest thing you did this year. You saw your favorite musicians and artists in one place in a scenic place. And now you can’t go back. That’s what an amazing music festival does. It makes you depressed you’re still not there the next day. That’s what III Points pulled off this past weekend. Across last Friday and Saturday, the music and arts festival pulled off its smoothest iteration in recent memory. This has to do with three key factors. 1.) Artist Curation The lineup this year was more heavily electronic than previous years. Whether looking at big headliners or the opening acts, many of the musical talent at III Points 2022 had some incorporation of electronica in their art. For example, LCD Soundsystem headlined with divine renditions of hits from across their discography. From “Daft Punk is Playing in My House” and James Murphy riffing on the drums to a stunning take of “You Wanted a Hit,” each song had its rock edge laced with synthesized sounds. This similarity in soundscape allowed a lot of various acts present to be more viscerally connected than previously thought. The venue festival also carried 11 different stages. That’s how III Points was able to have one stage with Tycho with a sunset slot, Joji taking bathroom breaks mid-set (in jest), and Rosalia serving an earthshattering set, while still being able to catch techno legends like Orbital, producers like Kenny Beats, and bands like La Femme without being lost in the literal noise. Even stages that had classically been dedicated to one genre all of a sudden had overhauls and inclusions of artists of various styles. The RC Cola stage on Saturday certainly did this with a curated lineup from Black Coffee that included himself, Busta Rhymes, Moscoman, and more. They may not normally flow together at other festivals. But at III Points, these acts certainly do. Meanwhile, the set times were also set up brilliantly. For one, several stages including the main stage known as Mind Melt had rather large gaps between each set. This allowed a couple of things to happen. Festival goers could freely meander wherever with less anxiety about returning in time for the next headliner. Meanwhile, smaller stages had the opportunity to honeypot prospective listeners with unexpected gems. While walking from the Mind Melt stage (main) over to the RC Cola stage, there was a DJ set-up near the bathrooms where the DJ was dropping the heaviest techno. This happened around midday on the first day of the festival and it may have been Winter Wrong or Generous B. Either way, running into some kind of enticing, concentrated vibe was the norm at III Points. 2.) Vendors, Utilities and Activities Aside from the musical acts, III Points outdid themselves in other departments too. There was a large collection of food stations, merchandise, and bars without the worry of long lines that could sacrifice time at any of the stages. Utility-wise, the venue also had a decent set up of restrooms for the general admission and the VIP, easy access to the free water, and a clear presence of medical staff and law enforcement. Activity-wise is where things get a bit more interesting. There was a mini-replica of Downtown Miami’s cityscape. The inflatable model was just the right size to take great photos pretending to be Godzilla. There was also a limousine parked in one of the only interior sections of the festival. Around it were two bouncers, a red carpet, and velvet rope barriers. Inside were a group of people having the time of their lives laughing and smiling. I wasn’t quite sure if this was a special five-figure costing VIP option or if it was an art installation with very dedicated actors. Either way, it looked cool as hell. But arguably and by far the most amazing facet of the evening was the Skate Park. Next to the Mind Melt and Outer Space stages was the building complex called Mana Wynwood. There, III Points organized a roller-skating rink with a tower DJ booth in the middle. They even had assistive devices for novices that looked like PVC-made walkers but on wheels. This allowed guests who have never skated but wanted to try a chance to give it a shot with a version of training wheels. It’s something I can’t think of any other music festival hosting or having. 3.) A Little Luck Some elements of a good festival are outside the control of the event organizers. They can swing in a way that can utterly detract from or ruin an event. In other cases, conditions can ride so smoothly that it elevates the experience from terrific to divine. Sometimes, a little luck goes a long way. For example, the weather was perfect. The famous Miami humidity wasn’t going anywhere, but the temperature was cool between mid 70s and low 60s (a South Florida rarity even in late October). Past years have faced heavy rain or been cancelled due to encroaching hurricanes. And although this iteration of III Points still had some rain, it was akin to drizzling that felt more refreshing than anything else compared to the torrential downpour of the year prior. Meanwhile the crowd was incredibly relaxed and friendly. Some music festivals can have hyper and immature audiences, especially when certain lineups contribute to overcrowding and claustrophobic conditions. None of these issues were a problem at III Points. Two sets come to mind that highlight this. At Sector 3, the Marias played a set that amassed a fairly large crowd spilling into the street on Day 1. But rather than bunch up, most of the fans found a comfy spot, sipped their beers and swayed to their indie pop cadence. Meanwhile, Overmono commanded the Main Frame stage with a more robust and dense crowd. But even this crowd was easily navigable in comparison to other shows hosted in the same space throughout the years. III Points is almost 10 years old at this point. It grew out of a necessity from the community to see the kind of acts you wouldn’t just see at Ultra Music Festival or Rolling Loud. Since then it has become one of South Florida must-attend events and this year continues to solidify that truth. With an impeccable lineup that delivered, superb organization, and everything else falling in the right place, III Points probably had its best year yet. See you next year. Flume plans to share “lost” tracks from old computer on 10th anniversary of his debut album
It was only a few months ago that Flume hopped into his Discord for an Ask Me Anything and ended up dropping a couple of long sought-after IDs that fans thought had been lost to the times. Now, the Australian producer has dug up an old laptop from around the time he was producing his debut album, Flume, in 2012 and plans to share many works in progress (WIPs) and unreleased songs from the era. The songs will be shown during a live stream on Sunday via TikTok, the only platform on which he’s made the announcement. Sunday also just so happens to be just short of the actual 10th anniversary of Flume, released November 9, 2012. He apparently had issues with everything from the laptop power and the sound, in addition to not being able to find the laptop in the first place. Unfortunately, the stream is going to happen in Australian Eastern Daylight Time, meaning it’s going to be 5am ET and 2am PT for us here in the US. Thankfully, Flume fans are dedicated and we’ll likely have a recording on his subreddit or elsewhere by the time we wake up to start our days. RL Grime’s new set-closer is an unreleased ID with Nero
While the wait for RL Grime’s annual Halloween mix is now over, we unfortunately enter another period of waiting as we wonder when we’ll receive the numerous IDs contained within. There are more than a few, including some from Juelz, Effin, and Rossy, but the one that’s piqued our interest the most is his new set-closer with Nero. Nero have been sitting on a third album for a while now, a little over a year, and it’s been over four years since RL Grime’s last album, Nova, dropped in 2018. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume both artists could be preparing to drop an album next year. But the big news is that they’re apparently working together, according to multiple sources. On 1001tracklists, which aggregates set lists from various artists, the closing track in both his Halloween XI mix and his set from Second Sky is a new ID collaboration with Nero (it begins at 1:12:45 in the SoundCloud mix). Ali Rez Drops Underground Tune, “Everything On The Menu Is Vegan”
Ali Rez is a DJ, Singer, Songwriter, Sync Agent, Earth Warrior, Tenant Defender, and Attorney “braised” in Queens NY who lives by the mantra, “With Purpose.” He believes artists have a responsibility to their communities and the planet. Alireza aims to use his voice to give back and also to give a voice to the voiceless. As a First-Generation Iranian-American, Ali Rez is on a mission to heal himself and the world through music, activism, and love. Striving for World Peace and Conscious Consumerism. Ali Rez’s musical projects often reflect his life experiences and dedication to protecting the planet. His new track, “Everything on the Menu is Vegan”, intertwines both of these components. Produced by the gifted Woodro Skillson, the single fuses together underground elements of house and techno for an electrifying result. As Ali repeats the song’s title throughout, a thumping kick and gritty bass line drives this song with mesmerizing side effects. “As a Vegan, it can be kinda terrifying going into a restaurant for the first time and not knowing if an item on the menu is vegan. I was first inspired to write the song when I ate at Vertical Diner in Salt Lake City, Utah for the first time. Pasquale Rotella & partner share photo of tasteless Halloween costume as Johnny Depp and abused Amber Heard
Not too long ago this year, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were embroiled in a harsh legal battle with competing defamation claims. At the heart of the battle were claims of domestic abuse, with each side accusing the other of attacks. The case stirred intense public interest with innumerable articles, TikTok videos, and think pieces regarding who was right or wrongm or what evidence was valid or not. But the heart of the matter remained domestic violence, which is unacceptable in any regard. Somehow, domestic abuse has become a costume for Halloween this year, with Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly dressing up as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, with one photo even depicting his hand around her neck, and the caption, “But are these even costumes.” Yesterday, Lexus Amanda, who has been dating and living with Pasquale Rotella, founder and CEO of Insomniac Events, posted a photo on Instagram of the two of them in their Halloween costumes, dressed as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, complete with makeup on Lexus around her eyes and lips, implying she’d recently been “beaten” and was bruised. Already this is a tasteless and wrong choice, but given the recent exposure of many alleged abusers and people who have allegedly committed sexual abuse within our own electronic music scene, dressing up in a costume to make a joke of domestic violence shows he is egregiously unattached to the scene which he claims to lift up and promote. The costume began gaining traction on Twitter early this morning, calling it “indicative of how deeply the roots of sexism and misogyny run in dance music.” It’s rapidly gaining attention on social media, although Lexus has already deleted the photo from her Instagram feed. Comments on Lexus’ post appeared overwhelmingly positive and in support of the costume, though a few were very clearly calling her out for the tasteless get up. Although, as many as popped up, they seemed to disappear just as quickly, leading us to believe comments were actively being deleted. In the quote tweets on Twitter, most are echoing the sentiment that the costume is tasteless and expressing that domestic violence is not a joke, even in a situation in which such a case was covered by the media ad nauseam. RL Grime releases Halloween XI mix following sold out performance at Forum in Los Angeles
It is once again that time of year… the annual Halloween mix from RL Grime has officially arrived, less than a full day after he played to a sold-out crowd at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Given the setting of the performance, this year’s mix intro was done by Bruce Buffer, the official octagon announcer for UFC events. Fred again.. continues his force majeure takeover of dance music with ‘Actual Life 3’
The rise of Fred again.. has been nothing if not meteoric. Since the release of his first Actual Life album during the pandemic, interest in the producer/DJ has skyrocketed across the dance music spectrum, with many festivals that booked him unable to keep up with the hype and placing him too early in the day or on an inappropriate stage. Still, his headline shows continue to sell out at an astonishing rate when much of the music industry is struggling to move tickets at all. “I’ve been in enormously changed by all the messages I’ve read,” Fred told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, “and seeing people at shows and the way people have kind of let the music in. It’s totally changed me and I’m immeasurably grateful for it. all I can say is, it’s just totally changed the way in which I make music, which is all I do. So it’s changed my life. I’m just very, very grateful. And you can see it when you play shows.” Today, he released the third installment in his album series, Actual Life 3. And we’ll say this right at the front, no, “Rumble” isn’t here. But we do get eight new singles, as well as the four previously released ones, not including the 11-second introduction. Once again, Fred seems to tap into something subconscious in his fans, whether a void in the current musical landscape or a feeling beneath the surface, pushed deep, deep down following a global traumatic event. Either way, the hype behind his music doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon and as we see him continue to dominate stages and lineups, his legacy already seems firmly cemented. Rising House Duo Sutton Place Drop Electrifying House Anthem “The Prince of Broadway”
Up and coming house duo Sutton Place is made up of friends Dana and Nick, whose origin dates back to their high school days where Dana taught Nick how to DJ. Their passion for music and production continued throughout college, where they eventually rekindled their friendship during the pandemic. Upon countless phone calls and demos sent back and forth, they decided to meet up in Phoenix (where Dana currently lives) to get some studio time. The more they created together, the more they realized it was time to join forces and form a house duo. Thus, Sutton Place was born. Being Chicago born and raised, the name “Sutton Place” came from a living community in the city. Nick explains “this idea of community matched their vision for our brand and how we want to bring people together through our music. Our attraction to euphoric vocals and melodies has always come natural to us, but we have always been enticed by driving bass lines and smacking drums. When you marry these elements, you get a Sutton Place tune.” Now, the boys are back with a sizzling new single titled “The Prince of Broadway” that truly stands apart in so many ways.
