Josh Teed Drops Mind Boggling Album ‘Recurring Dreams’ via Gravitas Recordings
Josh Teed is a versatile, classically trained, and technical musician who picked up the violin at the tender age of 3 years old, going on to win the Florida Fiddle Championship at 9. Now, his productions pay tribute to some of his electronic influences such as Charlesthefirst, CloZee and Govinda while still remaining unique and properly showcasing his vast expertise in instrumentalism. His live sets incorporate violin, didgeridoo, and live analog synthesis overlaid on top of every element of a great DJ set, keeping listeners engaged and entranced for every second he has the stage. This talented rising star recently returned to CloZee’s Gravitas Recordings with his highly anticipated album ‘Recurring Dreams‘. From start to finish, Josh blurs the line between electronic and live music, using his strong musical talent in unique ways to create his signature sound. With live instrumentation blended with his heavy bass production, Josh has been making waves in the scene and offering something truly special. It’s hard to pick favorites on this album, but “Nightmare Sonata” opens up experience wonderfully, featuring another break through artist, Daggz. Together, they fuse beautiful violin melodies with driving hip hop beat, building into an electrifying bass drop . “Memories Of A Past Life” opens up into a dreamy atmosphere exploring into the diverse sound he is capable of, very tastefully throwing in heavier bass elements but clearly showing a shift in energy to tease the rest of the album. “Elysian Forest” truly shows the diverse range of Josh Teed, and brings all the energy together for an unreal blend of downtempo and heavy dubstep with a massive final drop. “Zones Of Reality” ends the album with beautiful instruments and rides the line between his chill and heavier sides of this release, a perfect final showcase of his sound. “Recurring Dreams was a labor of love, taking just over 2 years to finish. The vision behind it was to push the envelope in regards to the marriage of instrumentalism and melody, with experimental sound design and heavy bass. There is an immense range throughout the project, from dark and heavy tunes, to the beautiful and ethereal side, I wanted it to encompass the full range of emotion.” – Josh Teed Altogether, ‘Recurring Dreams’ is an album that feels instantly timeless. Asher Shashaty, Take a Guess & Sacred Snow Team Up For Compelling Single, “Luminesce Entities”
Forging an unprecedented path in the realm of EDM, Asher Shashaty is a rising artist who possesses a one-of-a-kind sound, weaving elements of numerous genres in order to push the boundaries of the electronic space. His music is shaped by his influences and spirituality while also infusing his real-life experiences and channel them into his original tracks. Recently, Asher was approached by fellow up-and-comer Take a Guess. This creative producer showed Asher a song he was working on and Asher instantly wanted to be a part of it. Once the beat was finalized, the two collaborators agreed that Sacred Snow would be the optimal vocalist for the single. A talented lyricist with an outside-the-box musical perspective, Sacred Snow wrote vocals and melodies that fit into the track perfectly. The outcome is titled “Luminesce Entities“, a compelling single that blends heavenly elements with experimental bass and wildly creative production. It’s impossible not to get lost in the aura of this track, altogether creating a masterpiece that hopefully is just the start of many more collaborations between them. Listen below! Your EDM’s Top 10 Albums of 2022
At its core, music is a subjective experience. Even the most technically proficient musician might prefer making math rock, and some people don’t like that. Sometimes, heavily distorted sounds and discordant melodies might garner mass appeal. Narrowing down all the albums released into a top 10 is a purely subjective exercise therein. However, there are some factors to take into account when doling out a ranking for creative endeavors. Does the artist evolve in their own sound? Is there something new and exciting to notice in the production, writing, arrangement, etc.? Does it push limits in any way, whether to the detriment of the artist themselves or to the progression of a genre? Or did this writer simply have the album on repeat for far too long? (See, there we go being subjective again.) In creating the list this year, we aimed to go outside of specific genre boundaries. Very few of the albums would be considered strictly dubstep, or strictly house, or strictly drum & bass. These ten artists visited outside of their comfort zones or created whole new soundscapes for their projects, some might have simply improved upon past successes. Each of them created a listening experience that is worthy of notoriety and acknowledgement this year. 1. Grabbitz [Grabbitz’] own musical history and love of rock heavily influenced his productions and led us to his new release, Time Isn’t Real. On the surface, the album title alone is an homage to the past couple years when we were all stuck inside and days blend into each other. Beneath the surface, it could be a reference to the wide variety of time signatures on the album which keep listeners guessing from start to finish. The one common thread between each song is, it almost goes without saying, Grabbitz. But that’s not to refer to the person, but the brand and theme that that person has established. Pounding drums, gritty guitar riffs, incredible vocals, and an irreverent appreciation for his roots, the “Grabbitz” album experience is really unlike anything else in electronic music. 2. i_o Warehouse Summer, as the name implies, blends two ideas: dancing in a dark warehouse late at night, but also the bright sunlight and hope of the summer months. Though i_o was known for his techno, his history as a drum & bass artist also shines through on the album, as in “Leave It” and “Prayers.” Elements of progressive house also permeate the album, demonstrating i_o’s strength as not just a techno producer, but a music producer. 3. Party Favor RESET feels very intentionally named, as PF has long been relegated into the trap and party sound that ignited his career. Considering the ubiquity of some of his early songs like “Bap U” or “Wiggle Wop,” not to mention his artist name itself, it’s not entirely surprising that fans have leaned that way. But he’s worked hard through the pandemic, releasing THE ISOLATION ALBUM in 2020, a collection of experimental and more toned-down productions. Now, he’s ready for a full reset and we can’t stop listening. Previously released singles “Save Me,” “Superhuman,” “I See You,” and “Losing My Mind” were able to reveal a significant but limited scope of the full album experience. The full project is beautifully crafted and works as a complete story. 4. IMANU For the debut album from IMANU, who previously released drum & bass under the name Signal, playful instrumentation and creative sound design are the names of the game. From the iconic opening track with Kučka, to collaborations with DROELOE, The Caracal Project, Wingtip & What So Not, Louis Futon, Zonderling, Pham and josh pan, and far more, each track is a dive into something incredible. 5. ODESZA On the album, the band notes: “5 years later and we are here: ‘The Last Goodbye’. It’s an album that is centered around the power of connection. While writing it, we began to realize just how impacted and inspired we are by the people around us. How we impart pieces of ourselves onto others and carry that influence with us onward – that we echo out through one another. It’s been an awareness that we hadn’t fully grasped, and in coming to appreciate it, we wanted this project to honor our loved ones and our sense of community. ‘The Last Goodbye’ is about stepping back in, returning to each other in celebration. It’s meant to be a shared record: one we hope that listeners can experience together, with friends, dancing and rejoicing in that sense of interconnection after so much time apart.” 6. Culprate While artists like Flume, Tipper, G Jones, and others are often lauded for their unique sound design, Culprate doesn’t get nearly as much credit. For the last 10+ years, the UK artist has been dazzling with creative bodies of work, while also working with the likes of Modestep, Mefjus, Mr. Bill, and more, and even remixing Skrillex himself. His 2022 album ‘Number Four’ (translated from its original Greek) is another example of pushing the limits, an inimitable piece of ear candy for headphones users and audiophiles. 7. Moore Kismet The album has been in some sort of state for at least that long, with the first single, “Rumor,” having been released over a year ago. With the exponential growth of Moore Kismet’s career, fans at almost all levels have been able to grow and see the process unfold with them over time, something that rarely gets to happen so ubiquitously. 8. Shades When Alix Perez and Eprom team up for anything Shades-related, it is required you stand up and take notice. Eprom, talented producer in his own right and G Jones contemporary, and Alix Perez, drum & bass wizard, kicked things off in 2015 with their inaugural self-titled EP, Shades. Now seven years later, they’re on their second album and they’ve never sounded more in sync. Combining their talents, in terms of the genres they produce independently, isn’t such a complicated task. But the way they play off each others’ strengths and find something new is awe-inspiring. 9. What So Not Without exaggerating, Anomaly is WSN’s best work to date (and he would agree). Though the project spans just 11 songs, and 34 minutes, it never feels like it is speeding through and rushing toward the end. Quite the opposite, in fact, as there is not a second of room to catch your breath as each track bounds powerfully forward, building the story. 10. Crywolf Since the beginning of the Crywolf project, the music has always expressed elements of introspection and self-discovery. Through the artist’s own battles with mental health, the experiences and lessons learned throughout their journey have been exhibited front and center throughout the music. On top of being an extremely talented musician in his own right, the background also gives the music an exceedingly visceral and familiar feeling. That motif is nowhere more salient than his latest album, exuvium [OBLIVION Pt. II], created following a period of intense turmoil. The pain and grief in the music is nearly tangible, the powerful melodies and lyrics seething through the speakers with intense fury. This article was first published on Your EDM. Rezz opens up in rare interview on mental health, insomnia, relationships & more
Rezz has been extremely private about her personal life since she broke into the music industry in 2015. The daughter of Iranian/Ukrainian parents and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she has stayed largely out of the public eye while becoming comfortable and confident in her own skin. Overcoming a debilitating battle with insomnia in early 2022, which she considers her greatest obstacle to date, inspired Rezz to go on the podcast SHE/HER/THEY with KITTENS and be more vulnerable and open up about her struggles than ever before. While on a grueling tour schedule, Rezz relied on prescription sleeping medication to the point where it stopped working completely, and a stretch of 6 days without sleep sent her to the hospital. “Getting myself out of that negative spot that I was in was 3x more difficult than becoming successful,” Rezz says in the podcast. The episode is full of powerful stories, perspectives and lessons-learned. Rezz also opens up her family’s support when she came out to them, her loving/healthy relationship with her partner, knowing how to set boundaries (both personally and professionally), and the importance of taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. “It’s rare that I speak this in depth about things publicly but after knowing Kittens for like 7 years, I feel it was a safe space to do so! I talk about one specific struggle that i experienced in early 2022 that I truly thought was the beginning of the end for me and the ways which I slowly overcame it!” -Rezz Photo via Rukes.com | Text via PR This article was first published on Your EDM. Your EDM Premiere: The Emjulate ‘Pestilence’ Remix EP Is Here [VALE]
It’s been a while since we’ve covered the Pittsburgh-based inclusive bass label VALE, so one new readers could be forgiven if they don’t know who we’re talking about. In the words of Inigo Montoya, “lemme splain.” VALE, which stands for Various Artists, Limitless Expression, started to stand out from the fray of US bass music labels almost immediately with its first releases in 2019 and 2020. With a slight lean towards deep dubstep and soundsystem-style halftime, VALE has become a vehicle for both lesser-known bass artists and household names like Crizpy Criz, Subp Yao and Tom Finster let their freak flags fly. No obligation towards style of subgenre here; in fact, VALE’s releases scream “the weirder the better.” Between lesser-known and household name is where we find Emjulate, the Slovenian multi-genre artist who’s just getting started but is already hammering out big beats. Discovered by Neuropunk after he self-released his first EP Roborat, Emjulate’s discography was shaping up to look mostly neurofunk until VALE approached him. The Pestilence EP, released in August of this year, showed Emjulate’s chops as a deep bass producer, both in multiple tempos: D&B 140 (we hesitate to call it dubstep because it’s so deep, but technically it is) and halftime. Techy with a heavy dystopian vibe, Pestilence had a lot of fans, both of VALE and Emjulate, While drum and bass channels like Skank & Bass and Data Transmission were quick to grab the funky, crunchy D&B tracks off Pestilence for premieres, the somewhat more experimental halftime and heavy dubstep tracks seemed to languish a bit, so it was a smart move to do a remix EP and put the likes of Subp Yao, Uprising, Klipppee and d:enigma on the case. The revamps of the title track by d:enigma, “Petbot” by Subp Yao and “Tinker” by Uprising gave the EP an even more experimental overhaul. d:enigma chopped his stems up to filth, making a 174 techno syncopate mess while Subp Yap slowed down his even further and made them deeper, if such a thing is possible (it’s always possible with Subp Yao). Uprising added even more funk to “Tinker,” and when went completely rogue by putting an intense guitar break in the middle. Our premiere today and the only track not yet out for streaming (thanks VALE!) is the Klipppee remix of “Micro Waves.” The original was deep and crunchy and bordering on jump up beat-wise but generally smooth in the synth and bass synth, Klipppee made it almost actual jump up. By emphasizing the one and three counts and chopping up and re-arranging the once smooth and sine wavy synths, it’s a whole new track and almost a whole new genre. If DJs and punters didn’t recognize the dancefloor potential of “Micro Waves” before, they certainly will now. VALE · Emjulate – Micro Waves (Klippee Remix) If you thought these tracks were weird enough on the original, you were wrong. These masters of weird took Emjulate’s deep, dark journey to new places. This is the reason some of the best bass producers keep coming back to VALE: that platform of limitless expression certainly keeps these limitless artists and their even more limitless minds engaged and interested. The full Pestilence remix EP is out now and can be purchased on Beatport and streamed on Spotify. This article was first published on Your EDM. Ezediel Unveils Hypnotic Single, “A Dark Knight Screaming Inside”
Multifaceted artist Ezediel’s last release, “A Dark Knight Screaming Inside”, comes back to the more primitive tunes of “I Wash My Hands in the Blood” (2021 – 1.5MLN streams) and instantly puts you in a trance with his unique ritualistic music design and electronic/synth soundscape. It begins with a quote from The Batman, as the track unfolds with a sample inspired by the recognizable Fever Ray’s “If I Had a Heart”, mixed with humming and broken at times by intervals. The song inspiration comes also from Hideo Kojima “Death Stranding” soundtrack and tribute to the Low Roar’s song “I’ll keep coming”, whose frontman Ryan Karazija recently passed away. The lyrics are sung in Ezediel’s distinctive deep voice and deal with mental health and the Jungian concept of shadow. His words resonate with those from Jung himself – “I have a Dark Knight… No, I am the Dark Knight”. This song is an invitation for the listener to go on a heroic journey, to immerse themself in the chant like tunes, and find and fight their own dark knight, their shadow. The beat itself progresses to a rhythm distorted with static towards the end, but the song wraps up with a much clearer note and one hopeful last whisper – “So let it be. Shadows around me, the Light inside me”. Check it out below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Ezediel Unveils Hypnotic Single, “A Dark Knight Screaming Inside”

Damon Fletcher Brings Optimism onto the Dance Floor
Pure positivity reigns supreme over Damon Fletcher’s polished tracks. Already imbued with tremendous confidence, he is the sound that resonates in the club. His path to this moment has been one of constant perseverance underpinned by the sheer strength of the beats. The attention to detail pays off in many ways – from his incorporation of the soul into the electronic atmosphere, he is some next-level work. He started this project amid the pandemic. While everybody else was hunkering down, he started shifting his passion into a steady career. With a handful of singles, he manages to get the party started. Volume is a given, for his style has a physicality that reflects upon the club’s walls, bouncing off them with vibrancy and a sense of togetherness doubly potent. Others have taken note of his unique approach. Some big names like Lecrae, Lance Bass, and Damon Dash all unabashedly enjoy the few tracks he’s already laid down. Ne-Yo calls Damon’s first single, “Hustle with a Purpose,” “pretty dope,” which feels perfectly apt. However, those are just a few of the artists who have appreciated the new style that Damon brings to the table. Audiences have gotten in on the love for Damon’s surroundings. “Hustle with a Purpose” has garnered over 400,000 YouTube views, with many more undoubtedly following, while his latest single, “Elevate” is rapidly gaining more steam. To capitalize on this, he’s already working on his debut album, one that will continue with tremendous energy and gracious grooves for which he is becoming well-known. Blossom breaks free with “On My Own” and announces her debut headlining tour
Blossom has big things on the horizon. Before the year’s out, she has dropped her latest single, “On My Own,” which serves as the first release from her forthcoming EP. And as she finished up her dates supporting Alan Walker on tour, she has also announced her first headlining tour beginning in 2023. The single marks a hard reset in the world of Blossom, she explains: “The world as we know it has ended and I’ve been reborn as the humanoid, Blossom, challenged to rebuild a world far away from the one we knew. Alone, I travel across the universe to find a new home, and during this adventure, I discover what it means to truly be on my own. In this song, I explore the idea of alone-ness as the post-human Blossom, leaving behind the heartbreak and pain I experienced in the world before. ‘On My Own’ is an ode to the people I once loved and lost, and an exploration into who I must become in order to transition into who I’m destined to be.” Check out the single below. Blossom’s headline tour begins next year, January 20, in Los Angeles at Academy. You can find tickets and more info here. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. Martin Garrix announces new collab with JVKE, “Hero,” coming this week
So Martin Garrix released his (technically) debut album earlier this year, Sentio. He also released Greatest Hits Vol. 1 last year, under his project AREA21 with Maejor. No one would be surprised for the young producer to take a break from new releases while he tours the album, or does anything else, but he’s back this week with a new single already. “Hero” is out this Thursday in collaboration with JVKE and apparently in partnership with Marvel Snap, an official card battle game available on iOS, Android, and Steam. We’ve yet to hear a preview of the track, so stay tuned for Thursday when it officially drops. Alison Wonderland announces she is starting her own label
Alison Wonderland will become the latest producer to launch their own record label, following in the footsteps of Kayzo, Rezz, Subtronics, Excision, and more. As an artist, releasing music on your own label is a great way to retain power and resources of your own work. However, you’re not just releasing your own music most of the time, often intending to “give power and freedom back to the artist” at large, as Alison states in her tweet teasing the launch. Compared to major labels, the splits are often more equitable, though you’ll most of the time make that trade for a relatively greener label team that might not have all the assets and resources that the big guys have. We’re excited to see what Alison Wonderland’s new label brings to the table. When details are revealed this week, we’ll hopefully know the name, first release, and more. I am starting a record label. been working on this for a while & my entire goal is to give power & freedom back to the artist more details this week — ALISON WONDERLAND (@awonderland) December 4, 2022 Photo by Simply G This article was first published on Your EDM. Mrronwright Releases Energetic Single “Together”
Artist Mrronwright captures self-realization on the passionate track “Together,” led by his sweet and heartfelt vocals laid upon bouncy instrumentation. A track that captures the moments in which you find your bad habits returning to the surface yet fighting against to win control yourself, the empowering number is infused with freshness and a boost of feel-good energy. Having crafted a vibrant artistry nestled between Melodic and hip-hop, Mrron who started making music in 2010 has never tried to fit in with his genre-hopping music. After pulling us in with the genreless flow of each of his releases right up till his 2022 studio album me , there’s plenty more potential yet to be tapped from this talent. Constantly evolving and maturing while always reflecting the deepest thoughts within him through his infectious sonics, Mrron continues to be on the rise as one of the most exciting emerging stars. Throughout, “Together” explores beats, and powerful bass lines alongside impressive vocals and synths. The experimental element throughout this track, made through synthesized vocals and guitars all create a unique feeling of content, which is also warming. With a steady intro of soft vocals and arpeggiated guitars, “Together” carries out a development of powerful sounds and building electronic sonics. Mrron wrote ‘Together’ when he was trapped and immersed in a dark mental state, and the only thing that got him through those draining times was music, which is what he is renowned for. Mrronwright plans on releasing a dance-inspired project, after hearing “Honestly, Nevermind” by Drake, it opened his eyes to a whole new world of music. Mrron has always listened to house music but was nervous to dibble in the genre due to him being a rapper. Keep an eye and ear out for MRRONWRIGHT. This article was first published on Your EDM. New Artist Spotlight: Eclipseye’s Stark Political Message Hits With a ‘Whap Clatter’ [Video]
Many musical artists nowadays shy away from political stances, either for fear of hurting their careers or simply for the fact that they see their jobs as a necessary distraction from the depression and discourse that can come with serious issues. With 2022 bringing war via Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine, there was an initial outpouring of support for Ukraine with artist contributing to loads of charity albums and shows, as the war has rolled on and the repercussions of speaking out have made themselves clear (especially for Russian artists), once again, the music community is going a bit quiet on this important political issue. Eclipseye, a Russian-born rapper now based in the UK, seems to be taking the opposite take with his first two singles under this moniker, “Hymn of Hypocrisy (Rap Comedy)” and the particularly Russia-aimed “Whap Clatter.” Having begun his career in 2016 via a poetry coffee shop event, Eclipseye decided early on that he wanted to be a champion for important world causes, proudly labeling himself a “woke-influencer” even amidst the recent derisive sentiments against the term “woke.” Where other artists shy away from making political statements, Eclipseye is all about speaking up, even if people don’t like it. With its very first lines, Eclipseye’s first track “Hymn of Hypocrisy (Rap Comedy)” about the pratfalls of Brexit and the UK government’s mishandling (in his opinion) of COVID, shows that he doesn’t plan to pull any punches when it comes to speaking his mind. After a news sample about the polarizing nature of the UK’s plan to leave the EU, Eclipseye’s first words are “Brexit, Brexit – eurikas text it’ you need grass I’ll eat your Brexit for breakfast; Cause Tesco’s got nothing on the shelves for us.” It only gets more stark from there, and “Hymn” has now become something of an anthem for anti-Brexit sentiment, garnering Eclipseye nearly a hundred thousand streams on Spotify and hundreds of thousands over all the platforms on which it’s listed, all since the end of August. Perhaps it isn’t so risky career-wise to put one’s opinion out there. In an eerie bit of fortune-telling that artists seem to have a knack for, Eclipseye wrote his sophomore single “Whap Clatter” a few months before Putin’s Russian forces invaded the borders of Ukraine. Released just recently on October 31 with its corresponding Ukrainian-directed and equally heavy-handed video, “Whap Clatter” Full of visceral images of the horrors of war. Told through both metaphorical and sometimes graphic literal imagery and spit in both English and Russian, while Eclipseye never mentions that the track is directed at Russia, it’s certainly heavily implied. The fact that he’s donating 10% of the proceeds towards relief efforts in Ukraine makes it crystal clear. Stylistically, audiences should go in knowing that it’s not only his content that makes Eclipseye unique. While he’s tagged his style as “rap metal,” amongst other things, that may conjure thoughts of Limp Bizkit, and that’s most certainly not what we’re talking about here. The underused term “doom rap: might be a better descriptor; there’s certainly an element of metal in the way Eclipseye delivers his vocals, with low growls and a timbre so deep it could be called sub bass in some places. The music in both tracks, however, are devoid of shredding guitars and double kicks. A solid, minimal beat carries each track, with “Hymn” having a more traditional hip hop vibe backed by eerie ambient sound design. “Whap Clatter,” in the meantime, sounds more tribal and has a ravey structure in its intro and breaks, with large gaps in the beat to showcase the gothic-style vocal samples. Metal-tinged doom rap? A bit wordy, but this could be a reasonable summary for Eclipseye’s style. With the video for “Whap Clatter” being just as intense as the track that inspired it, it would appear that Eclipseye intends to stay on this path of stark storytelling, haunting music and bold political statements. With such strong stylistic choices as well as a strong message, it looks like Eclipseye will serve to entertain his audiences as well as achieving his larger goal of rallying people towards action and change. Whether you prefer his unique doom/goth/metal/hip hop style or his political massage, Eclipseye is one to watch as he releases more of his purposeful work. “Hymn of Hypocrisy (Rap Comedy)” and “Whap Clatter” are both out now and can be streamed on Spotify. We’ve come to hold new releases from Skrillex at arm’s length. After being promised, multiple times, multiple albums, and left wanting, the easiest thing to do is not have any expectations at all so that when something does come, it still feels like a gift. (Artists don’t owe us anything, but we’ve been teased and left dry many times already.) Out of nowhere today, 100 gecs dropped a surprise EP, Snake Eyes, including a 113-second collab with none other than Skrillex. Legends RL Grime & NERO team up for first-ever collaboration, “Renegade” [LISTEN]
Over time, we’ve seen plenty of legendary acts in dance music team up after years to create something wonderful. Today we see the cycle continue as RL Grime and NERO team up for the very first time for their debut collaboration, “Renegade.” The track was teased around Halloween weekend as RL Grime headlined the Forum in Los Angeles and dropped his Halloween XI mixtape, with NERO also playing the song at Red Rocks in support of deadmau5. Now, it’s officially out in all its glory and we couldn’t be happier. Neither artist had much to say about the collab as they shared it on socials, nor did they provide any specific quotes via publicists. Perhaps they’re just letting fans’ reactions do the talking. Either way, this is likely going to be a high point in both of their discographies. Check it out below! Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. Your EDM Premiere: Sharlitz Web – Dark Roots [SSKWAN]
When you think of a creature that is able to lure its prey and entangle the target in a web of intrigue and mystique, the first animal that comes to mind is obviously a spider. The metaphor is literally made after its most prominent feature: the web. It’s exactly that sort of magic that Sharlitz Web brings to the table, especially with her new EP, Spider Lily, out today on SSKWAN. From the EP is “Dark Roots,” a dark and foreboding track that perfectly encapsulates the spider’s strategy of enticing its victims. Sounds of nature begin with an almost suspenseful melody as it meanders toward the “drop,” in this case a more hypnotic combination of bass and melody. Visualizing the events, this is the part where the victim would become trapped and having seen the fate that awaits it, becomes intoxicated with the spider’s venom. The track as a whole is brilliantly produced for maximum effect, and you can hear the same degree of attention to detail in the rest of the EP here. For now, listed to “Dark Roots” below. 1st Base Runner Is the New ‘Night Stalker’ With 5th EP in Two Years [Video]
Night Stalker is an interesting choice of title for 1st Base Runner’s fifth EP, given the Netflix bioseries of the same name being so popular. Those of us old enough to remember, especially if you lived in Southern California at the time, may have even more of a visceral reaction to this EP and the music attached to it. Apparently this was on purpose. The resurrected true crime Netflix story of serial killer Richard Ramirez, tagged by the media in the 80s as the Nightstalker, means that GenX kids of Los Angeles and Orange County who were told to keep their windows closed at night ad nauseam are now not the only ones familiar with said story. It’s unknown whether 1st Base Runner was inspired by the series or is, in fact, one of those GenX children, but Night Stalker is easily his darkest offering to-date. With lashings of goth bands like Bauhaus and post-punk acts like Joy Division, Love and Rockets and Tom Waits heretofore prevalent in his music, it likely wasn’t a very difficult move for 1st Base Runner to tip over into darker territory. Night Stalker is nonetheless a pretty stark change. Only a little bit of the characteristic shoegazey guitars are left on this EP. Even then, in tracks like “In the Neighborhood” and “Dark Drive Through the Canyon” the guitars are tuned towards the maudelin and/or eerie electronic sound design, which gives this work a sense of madness and desolation only hinted at in previous works. Another 1st Base Runner signature has always been that even in the most emotionally difficult tracks, there’s been a small hint of hope or appreciation, mostly in the way the harmonies meld together to create and uplifting tilt to the music. That hint is still there in Night Stalker but it generally feels at war with the creepier parts of the tracks, so instead of harmony we get discord or, as with the title track, confusion and fear. This track lives up to is title, and genuinely feels like a sonic representation of what the inside of a serial killer’s mind might feel like. It’s visceral, pogniant and makes a strong case for not giving in to intrusive thoughts. One could say there’s a little relief with closing track “The Serpent and Space,” but one could also see it as simply the peace and release those who have given in to their demons feel once the evil deed is done. As with all !st Base Runner releases, Night Stalker was released with a beautiful and comparably visceral video for the track “Dark Drive Through the Canyon,” directed by the prolific Dilly Gent of Son&Heir Productions and Radiohead fame. Dilly has been creative director on a number of 1st Base Runner’s video projects but this has been the first one she’s shot hands-on. With the juxtaposiion of terrifying and sublime action and imagery in the video and the sort of motion stop vs compositional shot vibe she created, it’s safe to say it was a good decision that she picked up the camera. A complex track like “Dark Drive…” needed a delicate and skilled hand with the video to match what the artist was trying to say, and Gent captured it perfectly. It really is sobering, the level of quality and creativity 1st Base Runner has managed to keep over the last two years since he released his initial “All Thoughts” single and subequent Seven Years of Silence album. The back story behind this project and everything Tim Husmann, the artist behind 1st Base Runner, has been through would indicate he likely has many more stories to tell. The fact that he’s dug even deeper on Night Stalker to explore the darker parts of humanity means he’s far from finished. Night Stalker is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Check out 1st Base Runner’s YouTube channel for more lush videos and more on his story. This article was first published on Your EDM.
