Since 2016, Your EDM has endeavored to feature 40 completely new artists, every year, that we believe will achieve great things the following year. As of this year’s list, that means we have previously featured 280 unique artists over the course of seven years. The list has evolved in its early years from simply “which big artists have albums to look out for next year” to “who are the smaller artists that are doing something exceptional,” meaning we have had the opportunity to feature an incredible number of talented producers and musicians, many of whom have truly gone on to become powerhouses in their communities and genres. Coming into the eighth year of Your EDM’s Top 40 Artists to Watch, this year’s list proved to be a bit more difficult (but no less fulfilling). The list is actually drafted from the beginning of every year, keeping watch on who’s doing some cool things, who’s being booked to support the top artists as future rising stars, and more. Toward the middle of this year, our list was corrupted and we lost all the names. We did our best to recreate it, but at the same time, things can change over the course of six months. When we asked our followers on Twitter exactly one month ago today who they wanted to see on the list this year, we found a huge number of names we hadn’t seen, and many we’ve known of for a while that simply slipped the mind. REMNANT.exe, RemK, Sora, and A Hundred Drums (our featured artist for the list this year) have been on our radar for years. And for whatever reason, they maybe didn’t make the short list or someone else popped off just a bit harder. We’re happy to finally have them on our list for 2023. Others, in the case of Matt Barri, Lost in Beijing, So Sus, onumi, OLAN, Skellytn, zoska, or Ninajirachi, really entered our frame of consciousness this year or late last year and have been so truly relentless in the pursuit of their own art that they’ve shined in 2022 and are surely destined for big things next year. And then there’s isqa, the not-forgotten-but-revived alias of No Mana, who we featured in our inaugural list in 2016, that has come back this year courtesy of Rezz’s newly-minted label HypnoVizion. Sporting such a sonic legacy but having been inactive for the past 7-8 years, it’s only fair that we bring this spectacular project to the attention of the masses. As we do every year, we’ve picked 40 artists who we feel will have an incredible year in 2023, not just in their own personal careers, but also on the electronic music scene as a whole. As a reminder, we do our best not to repeat names year after year so as to give new artists the spotlight. You’ve heard of spaghetti Westerns, but how about dubstep Westerns? GRiZ and Zeds Dead take huge influence from the classic Western sonic motifs in their new, and first, collaboration, “Ecstasy of Soul.” If it seems impossible that the Denver artist and Canadian duo haven’t collaborated yet, you’d not only be wrong, but actually lucky that you’re here to listen to the first one ever. The track first debuted in September 2021 during the first-ever Zeds Dead B2B GRiZ set at Goldrush Music Festival in Phoenix, and has become their most fan-requested song of the year. 1tbsp is a side-project by Australian artist Maxwell Byrne (aka Golden Vessel), who has developed an addictive sound around this project. Over the last few weeks, 1tbsp released three new singles – Joan // 2007 // Seasons (feat. Squidgenini) – while also making promise of a new four-track ep titled ‘Joan’ coming our way very soon. Well, that promise has been fulfilled, as the ‘Joan‘ EP is beautiful, mesmeric experience from start to finish. His sampling is so precise and unique, part of what makes his music stand out so much. The newest addition to the EP is “Castillo“, a thumping deep house song packed with dazed melodies and hypnotic grooves. Here’s what 1tbsp had to say about it: “This EP is a response to the experiences I had throwing a club night in Brisbane last year, as well as my personal tastes expanding through a lot of DJing. I hosted “Sumoclic Night” with my friend Connor on a monthly basis throughout 2021, mostly operating at 50% capacity (due to covid restrictions) and also managing to dodge all the lockdowns. Hearing Kaskade and deadmau5, together, drop “Ghosts ‘N’ Stuff” at the LA Memorial Coliseum twelve years after the last Electric Daisy Carnival there was an incredibly nostalgic moment. But it was not the only thing that made the LA-debut of Kx5 special. 50,000 fans descended into downtown Los Angeles this past Saturday, December 10 for the first ever headlining show at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with electronic music act Kx5. According to Pollstar, the show broke records landing it as the largest single-day concert event headlined by an electronic music artist ever in North America with Billboard confirming Kx5 at the Coliseum as the biggest ticketed global headliner dance event of 2022. Illenium once held the title as he headlined Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Not long after, Kaskade himself might have usurped the title as he headlined the newly minted SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, at which deadmau5 ironically played as direct support. The show faced technical difficulties around an hour into the set as one of the generators for the stage caught fire and power went down plunging the stage into blackness. However, the show was back up and running in around 20 minutes and the venue allowed Kx5 to play past curfew to finish the show. Over the course of the set, deadmau5 and Kaskade performed on pods that rotated and moved across the stage while fireworks and flames burst overhead. Dazzling crowds, 300 drones flew high above the Coliseum’s iconic torch and supporting arches creating unique formations including a configuration of the state of California and flashing words “Welcome LA,” and song titles “Alive” and “Escape.” The triumphant live show from Kx5 has them joining a significant roster of musical acts to have headlined the Coliseum including the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U2, Metallica and Prince just to name a few. This past Friday saw the release of CAGE SCRIPT, the debut album from k?d, out on HARD Recs. Twelve tracks, including a bonus instrumental take of “IN YOUR EYES” with KOTONOHOUSE, tell the story of the unique universe in which k?d finds himself. Fans had plenty of time to sit with the first few tracks on the album as they were released as singles, with the latter half coming out with the full release of the project, including a collaboration with Masayoshi Iimori. Today RÜFÜS DU SOL and Crania have announced Sundream Baja, the next chapter of the band’s iconic boutique festival concept. Debuted in Tulum earlier this year, the immersive experience will take over El Ganzo Sculpture Gardens in San José del Cabo from May 5-8. Attendees can expect four days of parties, wellness activities, art installations, intimate DJ sessions and live performances from some of the band’s closest kin and inspirations. Already prolific on the New York City Scene for her dance, choreography and films, Andrea Ward has been working on being a quadruple threat by recently displaying her talent for music. Already a multi-instrumentalist and singer, Ward has released a series of tracks in the run up to the release of her debut album, Ribbon of Water, due out in late January. Inspired by Nordic folk and experimental pop artists like Bjork and Glass Animals, her sound is rich and genre-neutral. But is it electronic? The first tracks Ward released in 2021, “My Only Life” and “Keep Me Awake,” are pretty clearly mostly acoustic, save for some sound design on the layered vocals and the engineering. A cross between jazzy and esoteric in nature, Ward’s songwriting makes her work both modern and timeless at the same time. As we get into her more recent tracks, “Game,” “Algorithm” and “Awake at Night,” which just released late last month, more elements of what many would call electronica seem to appear. The overlapping vocals are there, and the highly technical engineering, but also the melody appears to have been born of the digital world. Or is it? The answer is no, those pingy, glockenspiel-like melodies are acoustic too. The more hippie-ish among us may already recognize that the melodies are made by the tongue drum, or hand pan, played by the eternally versatile Ward herself. This beautiful and deceptive instrument, along with the sound design and expertly honed ambient work is what gives ward’s newest tracks their electronic vibe, but are they actually electronic? While certainly not EDM, artists like Ward and her predecessors like Bjork are definitely able to come up with a vibe that has the underpinnings of ambient electronica. It’s a balance that’s being struck more and more as the Burner set of hippies goes more rave. The tongue drum is one of those crossover tools that, while acoustic, bridges the gap between analog tribal folk and ambient, celestial EDM. It’s all frequency, after all, to loosely quote Bjork, so who cares what the source is? If it resonates with audiences and is true to the artist’s heart, the source is irrelevant. To that end, the videos that Ward has made to go with these tracks are equally stunning and use a number of media to get the message across. As a filmmaker and dancer, all this art is in Ward and the videos really bring her message together in an even more resonant way. “Awake at Night” is a simple performance video but beautifully shot, while “Game” is an ensemble piece with decadent choreography that not only bridges her worlds of film, music and dance but the worlds of individual people as the three dancers go through the same motions from entirely different perspectives. The video for “Algorithm” is likely the most stark, as Ward uses her dance, mirrors and water to force even more perspective, both visually and emotionally. As lines continue to blur in art between analog and digital, AI and human-made, artists like Andrea Ward are ahead of the curve because they work with all different media and method without worrying about how they’ll be classified. EDM, electronic or not, work like this speaks to listeners and viewers and feelers on so many levels. It’s both digital and organic, and that’s exactly how it should be. Almost four years ago, in March of 2019, The Prodigy frontman Keith Flint unexpectedly died. The band took an extended hiatus after the fact, only exacerbated by the global pandemic, but slowly but surely started to come back with some smaller shows. Now, as we approach the new year, EXIT Festival in Serbia has revealed their lineup for 2023 and the influential electro-punk band will make its first return to the festival stage. As the band’s founder Liam Howlett explains: “EXIT is our favourite festival! We were there (in Serbia) when a lot of sh*t went down. Mallrat released “Wish on an Eyelash” as the lead track from her album Butterfly Blue earlier this year. It was a mere 58 seconds long. But now, she’s teamed up with The Chainsmokers for Pt. 2, a sequel and an extension of the original. The first 58 seconds of the sequel are pretty much identical to the original, then, as you might guess, Drew’s voice comes in and the song becomes a soft duet. Sonically, the collaboration mirrors The Chainsmokers’ latest album foray into a LoFi sound, but it also meshes brilliantly with Mallrat’s own voice. The collaboration arose after The Chainsmokers shared their love for ‘Wish On An Eyelash’ online; “Made a lil remix of @lilmallrat wish on an eyelash. The song is too good to only be 40 seconds long.” Mallrat replied and sent them the stems. Three weeks later, The Chainsmokers shared a cut of the version on a recent social post, stating “I’ve listened to this song by @lilmallrat everyday and I love it so much but it’s only :58 long so we did a little thing and made it longer. enjoy love you @lilmallrat“. GRL GANG, a label and community dedicated to supporting women and non-binary people in dance music, is back again with the biggest installment of their annual Wreck The Halls compilation yet. The amount of songs Kayzo released in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic is mind boggling, putting out somewhere along the lines of 14 tracks including his The Year The World Stood Still EP. Toward the beginning of the year, he clearly had rock and metal on his mind, though, teaming up with Atreyu and Bad Omens. Now, almost three years later, Atreyu and Kayzo have teamed up again for “Depression Season,” a fitting reference to seasonal affective disorder many of us experience during the winter months when the sun sets extra early. Lifted from Nirvana’s iconic 1991 record Nevermind, the cover marks RÜFÜS DU SOL’s first Like A Version in eight years, having last covered Foals’ “My Number” and Booka Shade’s “Charlotte” in 2014. Alison Wonderland becomes the latest artist in electronic music to announce their own label, FMU Records. FMU Records is hitting the ground running with its first offering, “I Surrender,” a single from the label’s first signees, the inimitable Jon Casey and Dabow. The track features a blend of each producer’s signature sonic elements, and arrives on the heels of their early November-released projects: Casey’s collaborative single, “Harder,” with Erbes on Subsidia, and Dabow’s hip-hop doused treat, “Dale Vuelta,” with jordnmoody and Episcool. In tandem with the news, AW announced her forthcoming debut LP under Whyte Fang, her alias which made a subtle resurgence in 2021 following a 6-year period of dormancy. REZZ launched her new label HypnoVizion back in October with the release of her own Nightmare on Rezz Street 2. Now, a just about a couple months later comes the first external-artist release and what an incredible opportunity to revive the amazing project that is isqa. Jordan Orcaz, from Southern California, first adopted the name isqa in 2013 with the release of a 10-track debut album titled Tetraform. A handful of EPs on DUSTLA, remixes, and independent releases followed before Orcaz decided to shift gears and focus on a new project. No Mana, the second project from Orcaz, showed a transition from the left-field sound of isqa to productions revolving around melodies, vocals and dance-centric rhythms. “REZZ and I became friends in 2014 when she shot me a message on SoundCloud – which is a trip to go back and read considering how far she’s gone (she was 10 months into producing when we started talking). At the time I was transitioning into mainly making music as No Mana, but I owe it to her for supporting my weird side in her sets and inspiring me to restart the project again.” – isqa Now curating the sound of her label HypnoVizion, which launched in October 2022, REZZ has enlisted isqa for the first release aside from her own.
