12ayo Talks Humble Beginnings and Rise to Prominence
It is possible to unearth latent abilities in the most unlikely of settings. Take 12ayo, a musician from East Los Angeles who has family in Mexico and El Salvador. Until a serendipitous meeting at a barbershop, music was never on his radar. Something about 12ayo stood out to his barber, who prompted the question of whether or whether he had ever explored a career in music. Twelve year old 12ayo was interested enough to give music a shot despite his complete lack of knowledge in the field. With the help of YouTube tutorials, he quickly learned the fundamentals of music production and soon after released his debut single, “Muevelo.” Twelve years later, 12ayo is a seasoned musician who has released multiple albums. He composes songs that reflect his inner turmoil, but before he does that, he makes sure he’s in a calm, collected space. He tells his producer about the concept for the project, and the producer makes a rhythm as 12ayo expresses his feelings. After the instrumental is finished, 12ayo will mumble to himself until he comes up with a catchy melody, at which point he will begin the lyrical composition process. Being a self-sufficient musician and producer has been more rewarding than 12ayo ever imagined. He enjoys the independence and fulfilment of creating and releasing new music, as well as the challenges and rewards of developing his skills. However, it isn’t always easy to get new ventures off the ground. Twelve-year-old had trouble with his vocal range at first but eventually found a coach who helped him. He also had trouble with the wrong people during his studio sessions, but with the help of his friends and family, he persevered and is now creating groundbreaking music that reflects his innermost thoughts and feelings. The success of 12ayo in the music industry is a tribute to the transformative potential of dedication and originality. He motivates people to look for their own strengths wherever they may be. With hard effort, perseverance, and a willingness to try new things, 12ayo was able to go from leaning in to a prompt in an East L.A. barbershop to being a successful music artist. Brownies & Lemonade brings the rave to Dave & Busters with latest DNBNL show announcement
Since Brownies and Lemonade debuted their DNBNL concept in 2021 with Netsky, the brand has been stalwart in bringing out some of the top artists in the genre including Dimension, Sub Focus, Kill The Noise, Chase & Status, and more. Most of these shows have taken place at 1720 in Los Angeles, but with the latest show announcement today, the brand reaches peak status. DNBNL will officially bring DnB to D&B as the show is going down at Dave & Buster’s in Hollywood this Wednesday. This particular location (we’re not sure of every Dave & Buster’s in the nation) already features a DJ booth with CDJs and plenty of floor space, but we’re still curious to see how the whole space will accommodate a crowd there for the music rather than the games. Although, Wednesday (at least at this location) is typically half-off games day, so if they’re still available, it should be a great night no matter what. Tickets are available now via the link in the tweet below! If you’re curious who’s playing, you might find some clues in the replies. Matt Barri reveals “Everything To Me” from forthcoming debut EP, “The Only Way Out Is Up”
When we were coming up with the list for our Artists To Watch in 2023, Matt Barri was the first name that we added. Though he didn’t end up as the featured artist for the list this year, his unique and raw sound has left us craving more. Finally, we have the first taste of his debut EP due out later this year, The Only Way Out Is Up. “Everything to Me” is, simply put, absolutely stunning. Lyrically, arrangement, production, melodically, it hits every single mark in the checklist. When people talk about putting your best foot forward, or starting off with a bang, this is the picture they use in the textbook, metaphorically speaking. For as long as I’ve been writing these past nine years, there are some songs where no matter what I say, it cannot do the song justice. Listen for yourself now before it’s available on all streaming platforms tomorrow. This article was first published on Your EDM. Skrillex sings on new song “Don’t Get Too Close” off DGTC days after announcing QFF release date
Two days ago, Skrillex officially announced the release date of one of his two albums this year, Quest For Fire. Due out this Friday, February 17, QFF contains collaborations with Pete Wents, Porter Robinson, Joker, Pete Wentz, Missy Elliott & Mr. Oizo, and more. However, last week, for the first week of the year since he dropped “Rumble,” there was no new track. So, ahead of the QFF album release this Friday, he’s dropped the next single for DGTC this morning, “Don’t Get Too Close” with Bibi Bourelly (who also features on “Still Here (With The Ones That I Came With),” the collaboration with Porter Robinson on QFF). This is highly likely to be the title track off the album. The new song is incredibly whimsical, with spoken word singing from both Bibi as well as one of the first vocal performances from Sonny himself since he released “Surrender” with From First To Last in 2017. If you remember “Raconte-Moi Une Histoire” from M83’s seminal album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, same vibe. Listen below! Photo via Marilyn Hue This article was first published on Your EDM. WHOiSEE Presents Dubstep with a Demonic Glee on Demon Hour
Insane Bass Ballistics pound through WHOiSEE’s Demon Hour. The sheer heaviness of the sound itself does more than raise the roof; it smashes it into shards. Everything within the atmosphere has a colossal physicality. A geometric take on dubstep with each drop, the song constantly shifts in terms of its angle. Lots of the work comes through with its multilayered hybrid leanings. One of those tracks that celebrate the escapist that good EDM and dubstep ought to bring to the audience, it is pretty easy to get lost in the countless patterns that race past. For all the chaos of the song, there is something intricately controlled about the tempo itself. The song knows when to go hard and when to pull back. Inherently ridiculously catchy, this is dubstep with all the joyous distortion the genre deserves. Yet he manages to take the template and tweak it in his particular fashion. While it may seem a bit on the freewheeling side, it has a structure. The evolution of the enormous groove occurs, and he does it a tremendous justice. This sort of thing was made for music festivals, as it has this sense of community, a new take off the Peace Love Unity Respect mantra, in a completely original fashion. WHOiSEE incorporates a wry sense of humor alongside the enormity of each beat on the sheer bombastic nature of “Demon Hour.” This article was first published on Your EDM. Alesso, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Ryan Tedder tease sequel to “Calling” after 11 years
Eleven years ago, Alesso, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Ryan Tedder released one of the most iconic dance music songs of all time, “Calling (Lose My Mind).” Ryan Tedder hopped on the track in 2012 after Alesso and Ingrosso dropped the instrumental in 2011, and since then nothing has been the same. Alesso and Ingrosso haven’t made a song together since, but Tedder wants that to change. He recently shared the song on Instagram and said, “Still love this one.. should we do another?” while tagging the two producers. Alesso then shared it on his own story with an emphatic, “Let’s do it!” again tagging Ingrosso. Typically when we see this sort of post from artists, especially at their level, it’s a sign that the track is already done and it’s a way to drum up hype. Ingrosso has also reshared Tedder’s initial story, albeit with only a heart emoji. We can probably expect to start hearing teasers for this in the next couple weeks or so and a full release around April or May in time for Coachella or EDC, as festival season goes into full swing. from EDM Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. House Music Queen Crystal Waters Unveils 3rd Set of Remixes ft. Todd Terry, David Morales for “2B LUV”
There few artists quite as iconic as Crystal Waters. She’s been a trailblazer since 1991, landing thirteen Billboard #1s, while also continuing to be one of the most sampled and covered artists (see Coldplay’s cover here). She has her very own radio show, I Am House, that’s syndicated to SiriusXM, and every new song she releases finds its way into the sets of today’s biggest DJs. Given her success, you can only imagine that anyone she asks to remix her music would be artists of immense talent. Well, we’ve been given a beautiful gift just in time for Valentines Day, in the form of mesmerizing remixes from legendary DJs Todd Terry, David Morales, and David Anthony (who also produced the original) for her recent single, “2B Luv”. It’s impossible to pick a favorite, as each offer their own signature flair that’s entirely irresistible. Morales offers an elegant disco house interpretation. Todd Terry comes swooping in with a profoundly pumpin’ deep bassline, and an infectious digital key-stabbin arrangement. Bringing the package full circle, David Anthony throws his hat onto the dancefloor and offers a club throwback for the heads that brings a bit of the old school flair to this modern classic. “I feel so blessed and thankful. These guys are the best in the business. It’s a dream come true.” – Crystal Waters Listen below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Marshmello gets nostalgic with third single of the year, “Eternal”
Is there a concrete rule for how old something has to be before you can feel nostalgic for it? Likely not, but Marshmello is making a pretty strong case for 8 years. Back in 2015, Marshmello erupted onto the scene with a unique brand of saccharine, bubbly synth music behind the guise of a mysterious, mallow’d DJ on stage. The sound was incredibly easy to engage with, without an overabundance of complex sound design and some very simple melodies. But it was quality and, most importantly, really fun. He released his debut album Joytime the following year, and has released two follow-ups as well as his most recent album in 2021, Shockwave, featuring a bit more of his heavier sound thanks to collaborations with TroyBoi, DJ Sliiink, Carnage, NITTI, Eptic, Subtronics, PEEKABOO, and SIPPY. Now in 2023, eight years following his debut, he’s showing off a return to that original sound for what we can only assume is the beginnings of Joytime IV. Eight years ago, the simple sound was a response to a trend of overproduced releases, but now it’s a callback and nostalgic moment. Check out his new song “Eternal,” out today, below, as well as the other two singles this year, “Unity” and “Party Jumpin’.” Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. PREMIERE: Shallou Reveals Beautiful Double Single “See You” & “Feel So Lonely”
The past two years for Shallou have seen a variety of successes including hit EP “The Long Way Home,” led by a 2021 debut with “Heartaches,” which saw support from key tastemakers like Sirius XM Chill and Radio One. After exploding into the festival circuit in 2022 with his solo-hybrid performance, he’s released remixes for Lexi Jayde’s viral hit “drunk text me,” “Saint” by Kygo signee Forester, the US Alternative Radio charting hit “Clarity” by Vance Joy and a number of collaborations with ayokay, Sultan + Shepard released via This Never Happened, and Singapore-based MYRNE on Astralwerks. His talent knows no bounds, and he’s kicking off 2023 strong with not one, but two singles – “See You” & “Feel So Lonely“. “See You” is backed by fluttering percussion accompanied by glistening synths and angelic-type vocals. The song then explodes into a full blown masterpiece of dance music, with waves of catchy pitched vocals and a thumping bassline. It’s unexpected yet fits perfectly. “Feel So Lonely” maintains the energy of the first single, loaded with synth stabs that spray all around your ears, while the well-placed vocal chops serve as another instrument entirely, providing a structure that creates an intoxicating rhythm. But even within the intensity of the music, there’s somehow still a mellow and soothing energy that persists, and that’s classic Shallou. Shallou continues to amaze us with how far his creativity can go – it’s hard not to be inspired by him. Check out the singles below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Asher Shashaty & Dani King Team Up For Uplifting Single, “Feeling” + Interview
Asher Shashaty has developed a unique style, sound, and genre range that is hard not to fall in love with. Mixing together eclectic influences, personal life experiences, and experimental foundations into each and every song, he brings a new music experience to the table that simply can not be ignored. Now, he’s teamed up with the talented singer/songwriter Dani King for their uplifting single, “Feeling”. It’s a beautiful combination of pop and future bass, coming together seamlessly for a captivating and melodic anthem. Asher reveals, “Before starting this song I took a deep breath, and thought of what I really wanted for it. I always wanted Dani to do the vocals for the song, so it was made with that intention. She brought the song to life in a way I couldn’t have imagined, and I am honored to be able to work with her.” Dani added, “I actually wrote this topline with my Australian friend, Max Hurrell. When we sat down in the studio together we wanted to write a song that reminded you of your teenage love. The good, the overdramatic, and the overarching story from start to finish. Asher connected with this topline and brought it to life in a way I love, but never expected. His style fits perfectly with my original intended vibe and I couldn’t love this song more.” We also had the chance to ask them a few questions about their process, who’s inspiring them, and more. Enjoy! Have you both worked together in the past? Asher: We have not worked together in the past, but we are going to work more in the future! Expect another one from us soon! Dani: This was our first collaboration together and it will not be our last! We both enjoyed the process so much and actually have another song in the works already. Asher, you mentioned the production process was different for you on this. Can you please expand on this? Asher: I thought about what I wanted for the song and put all my intention into it. I used to produce very fast and breeze through projects without putting too much thought into each decision I made. This song helped me realize that I want to write with much more purpose. Who are some artists inspiring each of you right now? Asher: Some of my inspirations include Flume, Just A Gent, and NGHTMRE. Dani: Now let’s be honest, I am a songwriter at heart. The songwriters I’ve been losing it over lately are Dezi, Chandler Leighton, Gracie Van Brunt, Luma, Soundr, Meggie York, Known As Nat, Monika Santucci, and so many others. I love seeing my friends succeed and all of them are stupidly talented. I’ve also been finding so much inspiration in mentoring – I teach vocal production and songwriting, and my vocal production students are all amazing songwriters. Sara Benyo, Keliza, Sonja Marie, just to name a few! What else can you share that’s upcoming for both of you this year? Asher: My debut album Astral Spring comes out Feb 17th! Some songs on it include “Urban Forest”with Miyoki (Which received Spotify Editorial support), “What I Need” with Misdom, and “Feeling” with Dani King! Dani: I have the song with Riot Ten and Mashbit coming out sometime this year, along with an amazing collaboration with Sippy on Allison Wonderland’s new label, FMU Records. I also have another song coming out on 2/15 with Outlandr on NCS. We plan on a TON of big releases this year, and more festival performances to go along with those releases! I’m really excited to see what the rest of the year has in store and we have only just started. This article was first published on Your EDM. Top albums we’re looking forward to in 2023: Skrillex, ILLENIUM, Kx5, & more
2022 showed up in a big way on the album front, with plenty of album debuts and returns from legendary names. But each year offers a new look at exciting music from names recognizable or fresh, and 2023 in particular appears poised to represent one of the best years in the electronic music album cycle in quite a while. READ: Top 10 Albums of 2022 Not least of all, at the beginning of this year, Skrillex announced he would be dropping two projects this year: QFF and DGTC. The precise meanings of these acronyms haven’t yet been revealed, but rumors have already been flitting around. To date, we’ve gotten five singles from the two projects in total, and you can tell which is which through the distinct track artwork for each. (Though, to which acronym you assign the differences is another matter.) Then, of course, we have the anticipated debut album from Kx5, the long-awaited official collaborative grouping of Kaskade and deadmau5, who first enamored themselves to fans with their electric collaboration, “I Remember,” in 2008. When the pairing was officially announced almost a whole year ago with the release of their debut single, “Escape,” hype was already set to maximum. ILLENIUM will return in 2023 with his fifth studio album, the self-titled ILLENIUM. While hype for any ILLENIUM album is already pretty significant, further fuel was added to the fire recently when Urban Outfitters leaked the tracklist early, revealing collaborations with Avril Lavigne & Travis Barker, Wooli & Grabbitz, Motionless In White, and more. There are also more albums that we expect could be coming this year, including the long-awaited third albums from both Zedd and Nero, potentially a solo deadmau5 album, and maybe a posthumous album from SOPHIE being finished by her brother.
