Orbital Further Their Legacy With Their Sensational Album – ‘Optical Delusion’
Few have reached the heights that brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll have with their project, Orbital. They’ve stayed at the top of their game longer than anyone from the post-1988 Class of Acid House, consistently delivering thoughtful, provoking music that pushes the boundaries of sounds and lyricism. They recently released their highly anticipated 10th LP, ‘Optical Delusion’, and yet again, Orbital further cement their legacy with what is a sensational album from start to finish. Sketched out partly during lockdown but fully recorded in the uncertain After Times, the album summons up conflicting emotions and beguiling images from recent times, when the science fiction doomsdays that the Hartnoll brothers watched on TV as kids finally came true. There are mesmeric tracks with names like “The New Abnormal“, “Moon Princess”, and “You Are The Frequency” that seem to bend the mind through hypnotic rhythms and swirling sounds. There’s also a few bangers as well, including “Are You Alive? ft. Penelope Isles” and of course, the incediary lead single, “Dirty Rat,” with Sleaford Mods. All in all, ‘Optical Delusion’ proves to be yet another gem in the Orbital mine, laced with important thoughts and questions for the human race to contemplate, while still providing club appeal. Skrillex is still teasing more new music with release of “Baby Again”
Skrillex just finished a massive promo campaign for his first two albums in nine years, released within 36 hours of each other two weekends ago. Quest For Fire and Don’t Get Too Close represent both sides of Skrillex’s production, with the former featuring the harder selections and the latter presenting his pop/hip hop side. And yet, the mad man is still teasing even more new music — I mean, we all knew those two albums weren’t all that he had been producing, right? One of the most anticipated IDs that fans were disappointed didn’t make the albums was “Baby Again,” yet another collaboration with Fred again.. and Four Tet, who all sold out Madison Square Garden almost two weeks ago for a 5-hour b2b2b set. Yesterday, Skrillex cheekily tweeted, “let’s drop baby again sooon,” tagging both producers. Less than 20 minutes later, he shared a video of the track being dropped at MSG. The question now is: is Skrillex keeping up the same pace of releases we saw with QFF/DGTC or is this “sooon” reminiscent of his old style where we might see the song in a couple months or never? I guess we’ll find out sooon. .@fredagainagain1 @FourTet let’s drop baby again sooon — Skrillex (@Skrillex) February 26, 2023 baby again MSG pic.twitter.com/I5KMO84u2f — Skrillex (@Skrillex) February 26, 2023 This article was first published on Your EDM. Flume’s “Tennis Court” remix is finally available on Spotify nine years after it came out
Music rights are a fickle topic. And nearly a decade ago, it was even more of a wild west environment than it is today, with myriad shady contracts or unclear terms being levied, especially in dance music where the major labels hadn’t quite yet permeated the genre to the degree they have today. So, cue Flume’s iconic remix of Lorde’s “Tennis Court” in 2014 — the song has only been available on SoundCloud and YouTube for nearly a decade, without an upload on the world’s largest streaming service, Spotify. That has now changed. As of this past weekend, the “Tennis Court” remix from Flume is now available to stream on Spotify to your heart’s content. When this song came out nine years ago, it ushered in the future bass era. And though the genre has somewhat subsided in recent years, we still look back on it fondly. Listen to the song again and add it to all your playlists now! Photo via Bianca Holderness for Splendour in the Grass This article was first published on Your EDM. As an independent artist, producer, and sound engineer, Jonnyfenn has established himself as a rising star in the hip-hop scene with his unique sound that appeals to both fans and critics. Initially, Jonnyfenn began his musical journey as a songwriter and rapper in Torrington but discovered his true passion for singing. He started playing with a beat pad at 18, which marked the beginning of his success in the music industry. His experience of moving to 12-13 different schools before high school and being homeless at 18 after getting kicked out of his house has not deterred him from pursuing his passion. Despite working odd jobs, such as cashier, dishwasher, and overnight factory worker, Jonnyfenn’s passion for music never faded. Despite being an independent artist, Jonnyfenn has worked with major industry names such as Def Jam, Interscope, and RCA, as well as Bighead's label. Angrybaby Returns To TH3RD BRAIN With Smooth Dance Single “HOLD YOU”
Following his earlier 2023 single, “EMBERS,” which saw him juxtapose deep basslines and groovy percussion elements, San Francisco-based talent Angrybaby has returned to tastemaker label TH3RD BRAIN with yet another heater. Filled with exciting moments all throughout, from its infectious vocals to its minimalistic melodies, “HOLD YOU” is as nostalgic as it is mesmerizing, and makes for a stunning display of Angrybaby’s creative prowess. “I wrote HOLD YOU while in San Diego for Christmas vacation. San Diego holds a very special place in my heart as it reminds me of someone who I loved dearly but ultimately had to let go. I wanted to write something to reflect that feeling but also have it feel uplifting and hopeful. The feeling I was trying to capture, that everyone has probably felt in their life, is the feeling of being with the right person but at the wrong point in time,” explains the artist. Angrybaby, more commonly known as Samuel Agate, is a 24-year-old, classically trained musician who currently resides in San Francisco. Drawing influences from the likes of Disclosure, Louis The Child, Odd Mob, and Elderbrook, took piano lessons as an adolescent and started fully immersing himself in electronic music during his years in college. Now, he has gained prominence in the local DJ scene and hosts and curates a weekly event at White Rabbit called Saturday Social, while also crafting his own style of dance music as a producer. Cyclops Finally Drops The “Egg”
Combining a love for heavy music and weird sounds, Keith Palmieri aka Cyclops has established his name within a new class of dubstep. Inspired by some of hottest acts in bass music right now such as the likes of Space Laces, Marauda, and SVDDEN Death, Cyclops has forged his own journey. Curating his own specific sound design and massive bass bangers, Cyclops has quickly arisen to the top of his class. Since teasing the “Egg Song” since last October he has accumulated over 1,000,000 views across IG & TW using the audio. The “Egg Song” is as hard as it is comedic. The song builds up quickly with Cyclops signature abrasive synths and glitchy overtones before a vocal sample comes up simply saying “Egg.” When asked about the creative process behind “Egg Song” Cyclops said: “I started Egg Song the week before lost lands last year. It started as a VIP to my song “Barbarians” with the “Egg” vocal sample. The original version of Barbarians already has a distorted bassline, so for the VIP I wanted to really push that farther and made the bass so overly distorted that it just sounded like a mechanical hum, which became the center for the drop. Playing it at lost lands the crowd reception was really good. I posted it as a reel on instagram and it caught on pretty quick and soon people were asking me at every show when “that egg song” would be released which prompted turning it into an original called Egg Song” Starting Cyclops in his college dorm room, to now supporting ATLiens on their sold out headline tour, there is no doubt that Cyclops is here to stay. fknsyd Unveils Debut Mixtape ‘Taste.test’
Having worked with many of the greats in electronic music, such as Hex Cougar, Slander, RL Grime, and Rezz, the talented and rising artist fknsyd has a rich topline that never loses its flair. Her debut mixtape Taste.test has just arrived, the debut EP for this talented artist that rises beyond the typical toplines she’s been known for. It’s a thrilling experience from start to finish, as fknsyd weaves alluring melodies and mysterious auras throughout each song, paired with breathtaking vocals. A few standout tracks for us are “First Thing In The Morning,” showcasing light dnb effects as her vocals offer a sedating effect. “I Wanna Be Your Girl” is a little more upbeat, lending towards the commercial side but no less effective with it’s appeal. “Taste.test is a compilation of songs I made over the last year or two. With my personal music I do everything myself, and I don’t feel overly confident about most of the skills involved in that process. As much as I’d like to only share things I feel completely satisfied with, I don’t think it needs to be that serious, and I realize whatever that standard is for me will be ever-changing. It doesn’t make me happy to stockpile a bunch of music. I admire people who share their art, so to me this is a step in the direction of feeling more comfortable doing that.” – fknsyd Listen below! Marshmello & Ray Volpe finally release long-awaited collaboration, “Old School”
Unlike a lot of ID collaborations that spend weeks to months on the road before finally being dropped, Marshmello and Ray Volpe only started playing out “Old School” relatively recently. When we say that the collaboration has been “long-awaited,” we mean that fans have been asking for this pairing for much, much, much longer. The two have always occupied a similar space in the bass music audio field, and the end result of their eventual collaboration is a great example of meshing their two sounds together. “Old School” is fairly short, clocking in at just a little over two minutes, and the drop doesn’t hit until right about the half-way mark, so listeners are surely going to be replaying that ~70 second chunk ad nauseum for quite a while. That being said, the drop wonderfully scratches the itch of getting input from both artists and for that we are thankful. Check out “Old School” from Marshmello and Ray Volpe below! Kx5, Kaskade and deadmau5, share full set from historic, record-breaking Los Angeles Coliseum show
Last December, Kx5 — Kaskade and deadmau5 — played an epic show at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the first electronic music show inside the venue since EDC was ousted from the city after 2010. (The Martinez Brothers played in the parking lot out front the previous month.) It is currently the largest single-day concert event headlined by an electronic music artist ever in North America. Despite the incredible amount of people who were lucky enough to secure tickets to the event, there are still hundreds of thousands who weren’t. Today, the full set from the Coliseum goes live on Apple Music, available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. “The West Coast has always been my stomping ground—my home—when it comes to playing out. It was foundational in building the sound that I play all over the world. No place in Los Angeles encapsulates where that hardwiring was created more than the LA Memorial Coliseum. The structure, the location, the sky above it—all iconic. When deadmau5 and I were given the opportunity to be the first electronic music artists to play there, as Kx5, in over a decade, we knew we had to come correct and make it special. We put all we had into it, and I think it shows. Being able to release this set is a love letter to our audiences everywhere, but it’s signed by the people who were there 12.10.22.” —Kaskade “I share Ryan’s sentiment. The Coliseum was truly an epic show. Even the generator catching fire and putting a pause on everything made a moment. We are sparing you with that, though, and making up for it with this pristine recording. We have all the great tracks and edits from the night all tied up in a nice package.” —deadmau5 Listen to the full set below! Photo via Brittany Teuber This article was first published on Your EDM. Excision and Sullivan King come together for fifth collaboration, “Fall Apart”
Excision and Sullivan King has become a pairing that fans will love no matter what, and they have a brand new collaboration — their fifth, so far — for fans to latch onto. “Fall Apart” is the latest single from Sullivan King’s forthcoming album on Monstercat, Thrones of Blood, due out next month. “‘Fall Apart’ really quickly became one of my favorite tracks for the record, mainly because it has this really raw nu metal/2000s rock influence to it, which is something I definitely grew up on and loved.” Sullivan King explains, “It’s a really simple song that doesn’t have a ton of complicated layers, which is something I’ve really appreciated learning from Jeff. I habitually tend to overthink/overdo things on a song and end up having to pull back from the chaos I throw into a project or idea, but Jeff is fantastic when it comes to making sure things are directionally clear and sonically understandable. Incredibly stoked for our 4th collab together, it really feels like the perfect mesh of all our prior tracks!” Excision adds, “Always have a blast working with Sullivan King! I really dig the vibe of this track with the slow melodic intro and heavy drops. ‘Fall Apart’ went off when we premiered it at our Lost Lands B2B, excited to release it!” Listen below! Spotify enters the AI market with new DJ tool
The discussion around AI has become increasingly prevalent over the past year, with the advent of many AI image generation services like Midjourney, OpenAI’s DALL-E, or ChatGPT. AI services, in a way, have been used for a long time but they’re now becoming more intelligent and, more importantly, more open to casual users. Spotify, the leader in music streaming, is now joining the fray with a tool they’re calling simply: DJ. This isn’t the first generative playlist Spotify has launched, but it’s the first in which they’ve done so publicly and labeled an official beta. [DJ] will sort through the latest music and look back at some of your old favorites—maybe even resurfacing that song you haven’t listened to for years. It will then review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs picked just for you. And what’s more, it constantly refreshes the lineup based on your feedback. If you’re not feeling the vibe, just tap the DJ button and it will switch it up. The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don’t like!), the better its recommendations get. Think of it as the very best of Spotify’s personalization—but as an AI DJ in your pocket. The more you listen on Spotify, the more the service has access to your streaming habits and moods, down to the time of day or even geolocation data. Perhaps you prefer one kind of music at home on a Tuesday at 4pm compared to driving home from work on a Friday at 6pm, this new AI will tap into that data and should (hypothetically) service you the appropriate soundtrack for your mood. Read more here. Where to find the DJ Ready to have the DJ soundtrack your day? It’s rolling out in English starting today for Spotify Premium users in the U.S. and Canada. Head to your Music Feed on Home in the Spotify mobile app on your iOS or Android device. Tap Play on the DJ card. Let Spotify do the rest! The DJ will serve a lineup of music alongside short commentary on the songs and artists, picked just for you. Not feeling the vibe? Just hit the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen to be taken to a different genre, artist, or mood. This article was first published on Your EDM. Talented Producer and DJ BLUUR Has Big Plans for 2023
BLUUR is taking the music scene by storm with big plans for 2023. The brand, which is focused on creating a space of carefree acceptance and good vibes, has been gaining recognition for its unique sound and powerful performances. BLUUR’s goal is to provide a platform for artists to showcase their talents through the “BLUURED OUT” event and offer an exceptional fan experience. “When fans go to a BLUUR show, I want them to feel carefree and welcomed,” the innovative DJ explains. “I want people to see BLUUR and empathize with how I feel about my music, family, faith, friends, and euphoria. BLUUR’s persistence and different sound helped the brand gain recognition, including winning the Insomniac Discovery Project and performing in notable venues such as the Hollywood Palladium and Academy LA. The upcoming BLUURED OUT event will include a livestream showcase and a live experience in the spring. The brand’s upcoming EP will feature heavier bass house music with a new and different sound DJ BLUUR’s fans are yet to hear. BLUUR believes that the best way to help yourself is by being persistent and different, setting personal goals, and accomplishing them. The brand’s long-term goal is to create a stage of its own, The BLUURED OUT Stage, where it can provide full production and showcase its unique sound. “When I started, I constantly asked for help and support to have a clear pathway to a successful music career,” BLUUR explains when asked why that matters to him. “I realized nobody will come to save you. Continuing to be persistent and different is the only way to help yourself, especially when your mind is in a dark place. BLUUR was my escape from all the hardships, a chance to start over fresh, and have a new beginning. Mainly, I just wanted to feel inspired to create something that aligned with my vision. I truly appreciate everything my team and I have built with this brand; it has been an experience like none other.” As an artist and creator, BLUUR believes in continuous improvement and growth. “Never be afraid to start over,” he encourages other artists. “Be bold and go for what you love most, no matter how high the mountain might look. Someone once told me, ‘If you think the price is too high to accomplish something, imagine the bill of regret.’” Looking to the future, BLUUR sees himself playing festivals on big stages with full production. PREMIERE: London Topaz Releases Blissful Single “Drifting” ft. Blush’ko
London Topaz has crafted a unique blend of indie-dance/electro-house music that is reminiscent of the likes of RUFUS DU SOL and Hayden James, while still having his own unique flair. Over the last two years, he’s been busy working on a collection of new music, one being his new single “Drifting” ft. Blush’ko that we are thrilled to premiere! The song stays true to the title, offering blissful vocals and transcendent melodies that make you feel as though you’re drifting along in a beautiful paradise. It’s impossilbe not to want to keep this one on repeat, as Topaz shows just how dynamic of a producer he is both with vocals and captivating synth sounds. “This song really means a lot to me. It was the first song I wrote post pandemic after taking some time away from music and wanted to capture what I had felt over the last few years. The song is about trying to break free of imposter syndrome, but then always drifting back into feelings of inadequacy. The beauty is in the weight of the lyrics and the way it cruises over the instrumental.” Listen below! London Topaz · Drifting (ft. Blush’ko) This article was first published on Your EDM.
