Pendulum was among the first electronic artists I listened to way back in high school. I started with “Blood Sugar” and “Painkiller” (which I later learned after saying goodbye to Limewire wasn’t even their original, they were just a feature) and then of course discovering their 2005 Essential Mix, Hold Your Colour, In Silico, and eventually seeing their final headline show in Los Angeles at The Wiltern in 2011. The group was a starting point and a pillar of my electronic upbringing and I was even fortunate enough to have drummer KJ Sawka as a roommate for a few years and get a firsthand look at the studio set up and learn more about the history of the group. All this to say that Pendulum is in my blood and I, and hundreds of thousands of others, have been waiting patiently for their official return. They came back tentatively at Ultra Music Festival in 2017 as they headlined the festival with guest appearances from deadmau5 and Tom Morello, but you could say they didn’t truly return until their Elemental EP in 2021. By all metrics, they are officially back. Following the release of their newest single “Halo,” with Bullet For My Valentine, last Friday, the group has released an official documentary chronicling the end of the first era of Pendulum, the rise of Knife Party, the return of Pendulum at Ultra, and what the future holds. “Halo” could be the first sign of a new album from the group, or another EP. We don’t really know; famously the group, and frontman Rob Swire, are pretty tight-lipped about their future plans. But from the footage, it looks like the group, under new management and with renewed vigor, the group is in it for the long haul once again. GRiZ has been putting in the work and honing his craft for over a decade. From performing with Big Gigantic and Gramatik, headlining festivals and his own bespoke events, playing alongside Pretty Lights, the world has seen him own his identity and provide a safe place for all to express themselves freely and proudly. Sadly, in some ways, GRiZ has announced that after October this year he is going to take an indefinite hiatus from touring and the project. “Life is really good, and often I make myself too busy to see just where I am and how far this project has come,” he wrote on social media. “I’m following my gut instincts so for now, I’m not going to put a hard time limit on the break.” Many of his usual annual shows in this case won’t be taking place — GRiZMAS, Space Camp, and NYE in particular. This track is about our perception of time and how it can be affected by certain things. It always reminds me to let go of the things that do not serve us, and to enjoy the little things. I started the track right before I had a double ankle surgery in 2021, which meant I couldn’t walk for 6weeks during recovery, so I had a sense of urgency to get the draft done. The track was done in two summer sessions, and I really wanted to capture that carefree, holiday vibe. I had a lot of fun playing around with samples, tweaking subtle elements, constructing the drum and percussive elements to work around the samples and arranging the track. It was originally going to be an instrumental but when Josh (Jingle) heard the track, he wanted to write lyrics and add vocals to it. With the chord progression coming in later I wanted the atmosphere to slowly shine in, like a whole of sunlight beaming through a wall of clouds, making the hole bigger and bigger. I decided to use it as the base for my intro and build an evolution of atmospheres around it. I used a Moog sub 37 and Juno 60 for the bass and top leads and digital instruments for the atmospheres. One thing that makes my music unique is my usage of my own vocals in all of my tracks. A person’s voice is an extremely personal and unique instrument and I use mine to its full potential and in many different ways. I often end up processing my own voice and creating interesting sounds from it, which end up in many of the different pieces of my songs. I also like to use field recordings of interactions between metallic objects, heavily processed synths, and like to play keys and sing on my own tracks. Favorite artists and influences at the moment? There are so many awesome artists and producers out there that it is so difficult to name just a few!! But, some of the artists that I constantly find myself returning to would have to be Space Laces, Blanke, REZZ, and Tokyo Machine. I have also been listening to a lot of Clarence Clarity, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and SebastiAn to name a few. What can the crowd expect to hear at your Movement 2023 set? Over the past couple of months I have prepared a lot of remixes, edits and originals for Movement 2023! I wanted to bring a solid set of diverse types of midtempo bass with an AUDIA twist and showcase my original music and bring in some of my own sonic flavor. Movement also inspired me to make some remixes of tracks by some of my favorite artists, such as a special flip of Tokyo Machine’s track PLAY and REZZ’s track, Edge. I also planned a few interesting mash-ups including a track by SOPHIE, but I don’t want to spoil too much! Is AUDIA an accurate representation of yourself or do you get into character before hitting the stage? AUDIA is like a limb of my consciousness; I consider AUDIA to be an extension of myself but not entirely separate. Do you remember your earliest moments as an artist, when you first started making music? What was it like? I remember installing my first DAW, Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS), when I was 14. I dabbled in a few different instruments but having access to a DAW felt the most limitless. It is what I ended up sticking with, along with being a keyboard player and vocalist. I recall enjoying the freedom of being able to create whatever was in my mind and essentially build an immersive world out of sound. Creating electronic music ended up being the one thing that I always went back to and ended up following into an education, and eventually, into performance. What is it like as an artist now? It definitely is fun, but being an artist is also a balancing act. A lot of what is seen onstage is an extremely small part of what it’s actually like. I am only onstage for a small fraction of the time I prepare for the show, and the show is the most visible part of the process. In order to prepare for that show, there are many days leading up to that made up of spending time elsewhere producing music and building sets for shows like this, among other aspects like managing social media. For me, performing is the most final result of what I am actually doing most of the time. Any valuable lessons you’ve learned through music and performance? Performing taught me a lot about trusting myself and my style. I used to have the worst stage fright imaginable. I would be very shaky onstage and practically unable to move, let alone sing. After bettering my own style and workflow as a producer over the past few years, I’ve started to believe in myself and in what I have to say as both a producer and performer. How much unreleased music are you sitting on? Quite a bit! I also wrote a lot of new music in preparation for Movement and I am always writing and recording more. I am excited to get back in the DAW and release some of it this summer. Anything else you want to share? I am absolutely thrilled to be playing Movement 2023 and I am excited to bring some midtempo bass to the stage!! According to Carbin, “CHEMISTREE is a free-spirited project that encapsulates the cycle of life, the human experience, and takes listeners to an enlightened state of being while maintaining natural and grounded elements.” “CLOCKIN’ OUT” puts a funky and experimental spin on your typical bass music that should be familiar to fans of CloZee, Big Gigantic, LSDREAM, or GRiZ. It’s a funky and fun sonic ecosystem that promises a new and improved sound that takes all its listeners on an eccentric audio/visual experience. It’s been a little over a year since Swedish House Mafia last released music, their sophomore album, Paradise Again. The Swedish trio played Ultra Music Festival a couple months ago but have otherwise been outside of fans’ immediate field of view since the end of their album campaign in 2022. Now, they return with new music from the forthcoming EA Sports’ Formula 1 soundtrack album, “See The Light.” With its propulsive synths, effusive energy, and otherworldly vocal transmissions, it finds Swedish House Mafia shining as brightly as ever, showcasing the hallmarks of their striking and stunning signature sound. To celebrate the single’s drop, the guys just revealed the details for an intimate exclusive fan show at E1 London tomorrow, Saturday May 27. Concluding this UK takeover, they cap off the weekend by gracing the mainstage of Creamfields South on Sunday, May 28.
