Modern Day Renaissance Woman Elaine Walker Revives Timeless Album: “Four-Momentum”
Embarking on an unparalleled auditory odyssey, underground electronic artist Elaine Walker is back with a rebranded fan-favorite album, “Four-Momentum,” shedding the ZIA moniker to distinctively represent her evolving musical identity. A luminary in the realm of microtonal (xenharmonic) music, Elaine’s creative prowess extends far beyond the confines of traditional genres. Her eclectic portfolio boasts titles such as published research mathematician, inventor of the vertical keyboard, and black-belt martial artist. A fervent advocate for human space exploration since the early 90s, Elaine’s five summers spent in the High Arctic documenting NASA-funded “Mars Missions” underscore her commitment to intertwining her passion for music with an exploration of the cosmos. Founding ZIA (1991-2011), her all-synth band, Elaine utilized raw organic hardware synthesizers to produce a sound that epitomized an 80s-inspired intergalactic atmosphere. Now, with the rebranding of “Four-Momentum” to “Elaine Walker,” she introduces a shift in sonic landscapes, embracing a 70s-disco-from-the-year-3000 feel. The album, enriched by xenharmonic scales and Bohlen-Pierce tuning, is an auditory masterpiece that defies conventional boundaries, exemplified in tracks like “Magic Rectangle,” where otherworldly notes seamlessly blend into a hypnotic and unforgettable composition. Elaine’s retro yet cutting-edge musical fusion serves as a testament to her boundless creativity and profound understanding of the marriage between math and music theory. Baby Audio release a new free Plugin – Beat Slammer
Some compressors are designed to be subtle. This one is not! We set out to make the ideal compression plugin for smashing and squashing drums, beats or entire mix busses. Beat Slammer will give you that pumping and ‘bouncy’ compression sound that slaps you in the face – and brings muscle to weak tracks. The plugin is based on IHNY-2 by Baby Audio and functions as a parallel compressor. This means you can compress even harder than you normally would and just blend in the compressed signal to taste while retaining the dynamics of your dry signal. Highlights: * Get that aggressive compression sound that makes your beats ‘bounce’. Add punch and intensity to your drums and mix busses. * Use the XY pad to set the compression amount and dry / wet mix in one motion, then adjust the make-up gain and output. * Based on the popular compression algorithm from our IHNY-2 plugin, just without the surgical tweak options of IHNY-2. Steve Aoki and Yellowcard Team Up for 20th Anniversary Remix of “Ocean Avenue”
If you were in your teenage years during the year 2003, then chances are you’re very familiar with pop-punk/emo band Yellowcard’s seminal hit “Ocean Avenue.” An iconic anthem of teenage love and hijinks, “Ocean Avenue” still hits right in the feels to this day. In perfect conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the song (and Yellowcard’s major label debut album of the same name), Yellowcard have teamed up with none other than Steve Aoki for a breathtaking remix that takes the pop-punk classic into the modern age and onto the dancefloor. It was actually Yellowcard vocalist/guitarist Ryan Key that reached out to Aoki about the possible collab. Key and the band had been dabbling in electronic music since they returned from a six-year hiatus and Aoki’s punk rock bona fides are well known. There have been a lot of dance music remakes of early 2000s songs, but the music is way sweeter when the original artist actively contributes to the new track. That is definitely the case on this new edition of “Ocean Avenue.” “When Ryan initially reached out about this possible collab, I was really excited—especially when I discovered how much he loves electronic music.” Aoki says. “We combined our different musical styles to create a perfect fusion of alt rock and electronic for this track. Honoring Ocean Avenue’s 20th anniversary by blending these sounds was an amazing experience.” “I really admired the collaborations Steve was doing in the alternative rock and emo world, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect to reach out and see if we could work together for the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue.” Key adds. “Steve’s passion for music and creativity is infectious. The band and I are huge electronic music fans, so working with him has been an absolute career highlight.” Check out Steve Aoki & Yellowcard’s version of “Ocean Avenue” out now on Dim Mak. Ready for ‘The Big Show’: Millennium Resorts Prepare for their Upcoming Album With a Dream Pop Teaser
YEDM debuted Millennium Resorts to our readers in anticipation of their In the Key of David album debut with the first single, “Happiness,” late last month. A chugging, progressive bop of a synthwave masterpiece with just enough indie lyricism to make it really interesting, “Happiness” was a good entry point into the world of Millennium Resorts, reminiscent of the good old days of dream pop like early MGMT and M83 but with a pinch of grunge-era Dig or Winchester Revival. The next teaser, “The Big Show,” released on November 25 and is just as long as “Happiness” (there are shorter radio edits for both) but much more of a think piece, both musically and conceptually. As In the Key of David is a concept album, this track is where the band really bites into said concept. For those listeners who made it through “Happiness,” “The Big Show” rewards them with a darker and more goth-heavy synth layout and an almost operatic layout. It’s what one would expect if one asked a Moog and an 808 to confer with ChatGPT to write a Broadway musical with Andrew Lloyd Webber as the model. It’s a good thing it’s called “he Big Show.” With genre twists and turns, everything from new wave to Tron to shoegaze to Zappa, the musical journey almost distracts from the message of “The Big Show,” but luckily the eerie, Ween-like vocals both ride over and ground the meandering music. Enough of a contrast to force the listener to focus, the lyrics seem directly contrary to those in “Happiness,” deconstructing hopelessness and the emotional oppression of daily life into an existential nightmare in the face of the modern world. While not confirmed that it’s about consumerism and the pitfalls of get-ahead culture, it certainly seems apt that the duo decided to release this one right as the Christmas season was getting started. Either way it’s a musical snapshot of a dystopian and it seems likely that Millennium Resorts like it that way. Look at their name, after all. So, along with expertly crafted, highly complex music, this is also the depth of thought new fans of this new band can expect to get out of In the Key of David, if the concept track of “The Big Show” within this concept album is anything to go by. For those who like their synthwave on the darkwave side mood-wise, this album will be right up that street. In the Key of David releases on January 25, 2024. Listen to “Happiness” and “The Big Show” here. This article was first published on Your EDM. Headliners Share Their New Year’s Resolutions Ahead of Countdown NYE 2023
It’s just over a week to go until Countdown NYE returns to the NOS Events Center on December 30-31. This year’s alien invasion promises to be the largest yet, with more than 80 artists performing across five stages to help ring in 2024. Countdown will feature the “Attack of the Lazer-Rayz” and they’re promising to bring more lasers than Planet Earth has ever seen. As we approach the New Year we wanted to share some of this year’s headliners’ New Year’s resolutions. While some artists had more specific career and music related resolutions, many others shared the same resolutions every other person makes; focusing on mental and physical health, achieving more of a work-life balance, and being more present in the moment. Deorro “My New Year’s resolution is to continue pushing Mexican and Latin culture through music in the EDM scene” Gryffin “I always try to make every year better than the last. For 2024, I hope to feed my creativity more than ever before and continue to prioritize my health and the health of my family. I’m so excited to continue to expand the Gryffin project and share my new music and new vision with Gryffam and the world.” Moksi “2023 was an amazing year for me. I felt a strong connection with you all. I will make sure you guys are proud to be part of the Moksi Crew in 2024. I got some stuff up my sleeve.” Ray Volpe “My new year’s resolution is to take care of my health. I’ve never traveled so extensively before, and it’s really taken a toll on my physical and mental health to be honest. Recognizing that this past year, and knowing that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I really need to take action on it!” Sofi Tukker “Tuck’s new year’s resolution is to have less of a sense of urgency and Soph’s is to have more of one . And we both want to continue to love the process of what we get to do.” Crankdat “My new year’s resolution is to try to find a better work-life balance. I tend to go all in with Crankdat stuff a little too much and burn out. I think if I’m able to balance what I need to do with general life stuff, I’ll be able to find new inspiration that’ll lead to some great music stuff.” Valentino Khan My new year’s resolution is to release more music than I ever have. My biggest goal is to take risks and take on challenges that push the culture forward. This spirit was one of the things that appealed to me about dance music in the first place, and I plan to put more emphasis on this exact energy. Borgore “I became a dad this year, which is a completely different mindset than being DADDY. I decided that for me next year, and the next 100 years, at least, I’m going to dedicate as much time as possible to my daughter so she doesn’t grow up a dubstep DJ. Jokes aside, she can do whatever she wants when she grows up, but my career goal right now is to get Top 100 in DAD Mag next year, so please vote.” Bonnie x Clyde Bonnie (Paige): “To grow stronger physically and mentally, become more emotionally resilient, be more open to change, sticking to a mindset that focuses on positivity and growth. My main goal is to live more presently, harness a life of gratitude each day, influence others to follow their dreams and become the best version of themselves so we can collectively help others to the best of our abilities & change the world.” Clyde (Daniel): “My resolution is to ’10x’ the efficiency of my work output while fostering a calm, positive, and enriching environment for myself and the people around me.” Devault “My new year’s resolution on a personal level is prioritizing my friends and family. I’m hoping to commit my free time to trips and experiences that involve them. On a music level, my resolution is putting out 2-3 records that push my own artistic taste. 2024 feels like the year to expand and push my own sonic world.” Riot Ten “It’s honestly hard to say just one. My new year’s resolution(s) are to get back in shape, work on my health, both mentally and physically, and to put out more music than ever. The way I see it… if I’m healthy, I’m making more music. And if I’m making more music, then I tend to be happier and healthy. It’s time to get active!” Tickets for Countdown NYE are still available. Prepare for the alien invasion this New Year’s Eve weekend in Southern California. Austin Millz Speaks About His Partnership With Meta + Joining Victoria Monét at Miami Art Week for Meta Sonic Listening Party
Credit: Arturo Homes/Getty Images for Meta Miami Art Week recently witnessed a revolutionary blend of technology and music as Austin Millz, recognized not only as a prolific artist/producer, but also a true pioneer in his craft, collaborated with Meta for the Meta Sonic Listening Party alongside 10x Grammy-nominated artist Victoria Monét. This dynamic event, aligned with Meta’s “It’s Your World” campaign, delivered a unique and immersive experience that left the city buzzing. Austin Millz is incredibly talented both on stage and in the studio, especially on the keys, which is part of what made this so special. During the event, Austin demonstrated the capabilities of the Meta Quest 3 by teaching Victoria how to play the piano using the innovative PianoVision feature. This live demonstration added an interactive element to the experience, creating a first-of-its-kind mixed reality jam session that blurred the lines between the virtual and the real. MIAMI, FLORIDA – DECEMBER 09: Victoria Monét and Austin Millz playing on PianoVision with Meta Quest 3 at the Meta Sonic Listening Party during Miami Art Week on December 09, 2023 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Arturo Holmes/Getty Images for Meta) Following the success of last year’s viral Meta House experience, Meta transformed Miami Art Week into a mixed-reality playground, providing a platform for emerging artists, musicians, and creators to redefine the future of creative expression. The “It’s Your World” campaign brought together a diverse array of talents to showcase the limitless possibilities of mixed reality across various experiences throughout the city, making it only fitting that Austin was involved. We had the opportunity to chat with Austin about this experience and what’s ahead, check it out below! Collaborating with Victoria Monét in a mixed-reality jam session is an innovative approach. How did the idea for this come about, and what excites you most about merging technology with live musical performances? Austin Millz: For me, I think merging live music with technologies is the future, whether you’re collaborating in the studio or collaborating in real time and real life. And I think what just happened this past weekend was the first of its kind. I think it’s going to pave the way for newer events of this nature and just kind of push the boundaries of creativity. Meta had the right idea with the Meta Sonic Listening party and this experience. It was great. During the session, you used PianoVision on Meta Quest 3 to teach Victoria Monét how to play the piano. Can you share more about the creative process behind incorporating virtual reality into a live music experience, and how it enhances the learning and collaboration aspects of the performance? Austin: For sure. Just knowing how to intertwine and really know how to navigate technology is one helpful thing. But I think you know, Meta Quest and the PianoVision technology is so user friendly that honestly, it’s half and half, the technology is so amazing that it can really allow the user to feel comfortable, but you know, I’m there anyway. It gives that real IRL effect of having somebody in person helping you, but the technology is so amazing that having a person there too is not essential, but it helps to have somebody there just for that real life aspect. This new technology is so captivating and innovative that you can just really be hands-on with it. The Meta Sonic Listening Party is part of Meta’s “It’s Your World.” campaign, celebrating the next generation’s creative expression. How does your collaboration with Meta align with this campaign, and how do you see technology influencing the future of music and art? Austin Millz: I think Meta is really pushing the envelope in terms of innovation. For me, I’m using Meta everyday—whether it’s Facebook or Instagram, and it’s just really allowing me to have my music across the world. It’s allowing me to touch different audiences, and allowing me to just really take my creativity to new heights. I’m super excited for the new technology, because I think it’s going to take it to a whole other new level. The “It’s Your World.” campaign has allowed me to create my own world with Meta. As a creator yourself, how do you personally leverage Meta’s products or immersive technology in your creative process? And how do you think these tools can inspire and assist other artists in pushing boundaries and exploring new avenues in their work? Austin Millz: I’m super excited to see what I’m going to do with them. I already have so many different ideas, even with the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, I’m definitely going to use those during my live shows. I can capture content and really have the user or the audience or people watching my content feel like they’re at a live show. That’s something that I’m really looking forward to. There’s so many things in terms of the apps too that are in Meta Quest 3 that you can just really be hands-on with, and have things be really accessible and just really be able to learn things that you never thought you could before, because Meta’s going to allow you to be hands-on with the technology. Whatever age you are, it’s going to allow you to feel like you’re getting there. I think Meta is allowing the average consumer to really be hands-on with anything they want to create their own world. How do you see events like the Meta Sonic Listening Party contributing to the intersection of art, technology, music, and what impact do you hope that these experiences will have on the creative community overall? Austin Millz: I would love for it to just expand people’s thoughts. There’s people that are still on the fence about using this technology or AI, and I hope that the Meta Sonic Listening Party experience could move people one step closer to express their thoughts and really live a little, and take a risk in allowing themselves to embrace this new technology. That’s the way of the future, so I feel like Meta is really leading the force with this next wave of technology. I hope that users who had second thoughts about using it can now go, “You know what? Let me just embrace this and embrace the future.” How have the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses played a role in your day-to-day creative process or interactions? Austin Millz: Honestly, like I said earlier, it’s really something that I’m looking forward to using at my live shows. It’s an easier way to capture content for something that I could have been using another device for but instead I can just have the glasses on my face, recording live. Like I said, it is an easier way to use technology in a way that hasn’t been done before. Anything else that you would like to share with the YourEDM readers? Austin Millz: Yes. I’m going on a headline tour in 2024 end of February until June. Go get your tickets on AustinMillz.com and, yeah, I want to see you all at a show soon! Happy New Year!
