From March 20 – 21, Afterlife will return to Miami Music Week for an entrancing, two-night affair at Miami Marine Stadium. The event’s opening evening features a slate of A-list melodic techno talent, including event founders, Tale Of Us, CamelPhat, Mathame, Adam Sellouk, and Anyma (for “Anyma presents Genesys”). The latter is timely, considering the producer’s recent announcement of Genesys Part II. Due March 29, this second installment succeeds Genesys, released in August of 2023. Anyma’s Miami Music Week appearance will be followed by sets at Coachella 2024. The brand new label will be launched Friday, March 15th with the official release of Luciid’s ‘Bunker Buster’. Hard techno’s popularity has surged in recent years, at least partly due to Verknipt’s early adoption of the sound. Ever since, Verknipt events have proven to be a hotbed for talent, launching several artists into superstardom within the genre. Now, through Verknipt Records, the brand will be able to nurture talent even more, laying the groundwork for hard techno’s next generation of idols. At the helm of Verknipt’s global operations is Mer Hajbarati, adding; “There really isn’t a label in hard techno with a platform as big as ours yet, so we’ll be able to add huge value to the artists we sign to Verknipt Records. Launching this record label felt like the next logical step to keep moving the needle within our industry. We’ve got so much planned for the next couple of years, this is just the start of it.” Starting with Luciid’s latest belter, Verknipt Records will be releasing a new track every three weeks well into the summer. ‘Bunker Buster’ ticks all the boxes of a guaranteed crowd pleaser, complete with distorted kicks reminiscent of the early days hardcore sound. Even before its release, the record has already made its way onto some high-profile USBs, garnering support from I Hate Models, Nico Moreno and 999999999 to name a few. Who are you? Label name: Riot Records / Founder: Georgie Riot What’s your ethos? We focus on celebrating unique electronic dance music from independent artists, which reflects the era we live in. Tell us your origin story? I started the label because I wanted to have creative freedom over the music I release myself as an artist. I found that I was spending a lot of time waiting for other labels to listen to my demos and reply to emails. I also wanted to celebrate other artists who make music that doesn’t quite fit into one box so to speak. Where are you based? I personally am from Coventry. Here we have a small drum & bass scene, with small events like “Fack Abaat” and “Standard Procedure Presents” run by my good friend Toddlah. The Kasbah often hosts day raves where there will usually be a d&b room. I played my first two shows at The Kasbah and Ivy House, they’re a vibe! If you go a bit further afield in the West Midlands, clubs like Forum, Lab11, XOYO, and others all throw some killer bass nights! Do you have a specific sound or vibe? I personally play mostly jump-up and dancefloor d&b in my sets when djing, but I think it’s really important to embrace all styles when selecting music for the label. I don’t want artists to feel restricted with their production, experimenting is good! Basically any tracks I really vibe to I’m happy to sign, I don’t restrict the label and box it off to just one sub-genre – if it slaps, it slaps. Do you have a regular artist roster ? Yes we have regulars such as Feed The Fire, Gouki, Klay, Kartypartyy, and of course myself! Tell us about your A&R process… I actively look for artists with a signature sound and a strong identity. I listen to each track a couple of times, sometimes I like to wait a few days and then go back and re-listen to tracks I marked as potential releases. I sometimes make suggestions for what I think a track might benefit from whilst still respecting the artist’s vision. I sometimes source vocalists for producers who have sent through an instrumental who might not be in contact with vocalists themselves. It’s also important to choose tracks which will work well together when considering them for an EP, and it’s important to sign tracks that fit with the label stylistically as well as in terms of quality. What makes you different from other labels? I think variety plays a key part in setting Riot Records apart from other labels, we’re not restricted to just one subgenre of drum and bass. Also the fact that the label is run by a woman, that’s something in itself that sets us apart from other labels because men still dominate the industry! What does it take to run a bass music label in 2024? Knowledge in music production, marketing, music rights, artist and general management. You need a strong brand identity. You need to be hardworking. What have you got coming up we should look out for? We kicked off the year with a wicked new EP from Feed The Fire called “Dopamine Dreams”, that will be hitting the stores on March 1st. We have loads more in store for the rest of the year, including a VIP pack from Gouki as well as brand new releases from myself – so keep your eyes peeled for that! Five of Europe’s leading nightlife specialists team up to present NightSchool: An EU wide training programme designed to support night culture producers early in their career. This transnational education programme will focus on environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The project sets to pair nightlife visionaries spanning promoters, bookers, venue owners, to hands-on creatives with industry veterans and experts from the European culture circuit. Funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe, NightSchool will select 15 participants, providing a grant of €5,000 each. This will go towards facilitating a week of peer-learning sessions in multiple cities as well as to launching their own sustainable event ideas. Empowering individuals to turn their visions into reality is at the core of the programme. NightSchool will offer recipients the chance to travel and engage in a sequence of face-to-face peer-learning sessions hosted by renowned experts and three distinguished European night culture venues. The programme launches with an open call to select young culture producers from across Europe. Together they will visit some of Europe’s most respected venues and learn from the best in their field. Co-founder Mirik Milan emphasises, “Nightlife creatives and culture producers are first and foremost problem solvers. They are needed right now, more than ever to take on the unique challenges and opportunities of our rapidly evolving cultural sector.” The micro-funding scheme (€75,000) will support the selectees in pioneering and implementing sustainability-focused night culture events across all of Europe. To complement the training and mentorship programme, NightSchool is building an online resource and hybrid platform that offers educational content to a global audience, hosted and curated by a vast network of key experts within night culture and sustainability. A joint effort by five partnering organisations, NightSchool is a collaboration between Vibelab, Belgian club institution FUSE, Latvian culture centre Kaņepes Kultūras Centrs, Italian based creative hub BASIS Vinschgau Venost alongside their in-house event KASINO Club, and Sweden-based cultural strategy and production agency Transversal Project. This notion of collaboration is key to the programme’s mission, as Milan further highlights: “While the term ‘community’ is frequently overused in the commercial world, its essence lies in uniting a collective of like-minded souls together. At NightSchool, we join forces to address issues of diversity, inclusivity and solidarity. As well as climate action and the ecological dimension of night culture, we provide first-hand insights on maintaining a financially sound enterprise.” Based on three core pillars of Social Awareness, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship, NightSchool creates inclusive, safe(r) and vibrant environments that actively promote diversity, wellbeing and positive community interactions. Proudly promoting environmental sustainability whilst minimising the environmental impact of nighttime cultural activities. Through applied practices incorporating energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable sourcing and reduced air travel, NightSchool explores business activities within the nighttime cultural sector covering venue management, events organisation, and curating experiences aiming to enrich their respective city’s local scene. Applications are open now, closing date for applications will be April 12th, with participants committing to a week long training 3-8 June 2024.
