Best free plugins and freeware of the month: March 2024
March is a month of growth and transformation. If you’re looking to refresh your sound and perhaps transform your production setup, our pick of March’s best freeware could spice things up. READ MORE: All the best free loops, music sample packs, breaks, one-shots and synth sounds This month’s roundup includes a fiery ‘bass enhancer’, a channel strip, an analogue colouration plugin, a cool-looking instrument called Sur, and a compression plugin created by Phil Speiser. We’ve picked these plugins out because, while free, they’re well-developed, delivering arguably as much power as paid-for plugins. Vox Samples – Fire Boy Fire Boy is the latest free effect plugin by Vox Samples, joining the equally free Pixel Rabbit bit crusher, Time Turtle delay, Fat Cat saturation plugin and more. Fire Boy is a bass enhancer plugin that helps enrich bass without muddying the sound. Crafted for musical harmonics, it adds depth without sacrificing headroom. It’s a straightforward effect, donning three simple knobs – Intensity, Freq, and Gain – that can be used to adjust for your desired bass enhancement and volume control. Download Fire Boy for free at Vox Samples. Lotus Sound – MixHARMONY MixHARMONY, engineered for versatility, is a channel strip that features EQ and compressor sections drawing from classic Solid State Logic channel strip models. With the EQ, you can use it to enhance vocals or boost low end effortlessly. Smoothly add dynamics or aggressively compress your bus with the integrated compressor. You can also explore various meticulously crafted factory presets for instant inspiration. Download MixHARMONY for free on Patreon. Variety Of Sound – TesslaPro Mk IV TesslaPro Mk IV is the latest update to Variety Of Sound’s free analogue enhancing plugin. It’s a powerful tool designed for digital mixing and mastering engineers seeking to infuse their productions with the rich, analogue character often associated with high-end hardware devices. It brings subtle analogue artefacts into the digital domain, adding warmth and depth to the sound while enhancing transients and stereo imaging. Its Boost feature provides further control over mix cohesion and peak management. Whether applied to individual tracks or to your mixbus, TesslaPro works well for adding elegant analogue vibes wherever needed. Download TesslaPro Mk IV on Variety Of Sound. MNTRA Instruments – Sur This new soft synth by MNTRA is a “free taster” of the brand’s forthcoming Naada synth. Replicating the essence of the drone in Indian classical music, Sur is a sample-based instrument using samples of traditional Indian instruments, such as the Tanpuras, a Sitar-like string instrument, and the shruti box. Powered by MNTRA’s advanced MNDALA 2 sound engine, it invites musicians to delve into the intricate nuances of popular Ragas with precision and authenticity, serving as a gateway to the calm beauty of Indian classical music. Download Sur for free on MNTRA. iZotope – Trash Lite iZotope’s Trash distortion plugin, which was originally released in 2003 and soon established itself as an iconic distortion effect for producers, made a big return recently. This revamped version introduces a new look, a more modern interface, a free version and a version for iPad. Trash offers over 60 distortion types and 600 impulse responses. New additions include an XY pad for blending algorithms, an envelope follower, and what it calls a Scream filter. With Trash Lite, you get a free, limited version of the full thing, but it’s still impressive nonetheless. Check out Trash Lite for free on iZotope. Phil Speiser – The_Compressor Phil Speiser, a musician and now plugin developer who to date has been involved in a number of top 10 hits, has released The_Compressor. This plugin simplifies compression, providing easy control for professional outcomes. Developed due to frustration with existing options, it most notably features a function called Magic Mode, which automatically sets optimal parameters. Designed for accessibility, it ensures users of all levels can achieve expert compression without having to be an expert. Download The_Compressor for free on Phil Speiser’s website. SoliderSound – S Doubler (Free) S Doubler is a widener plugin that lets you position four doubling voices on a virtual sound stage so you can tailor the stereo image of your music. Using it, you can add width and depth to vocals and instruments, replicating the psycho-acoustic effects of sound proximity for dimension in your mix. There are three controls to shape the width you’re giving your audio, Spread, Distance, and Tone. According to the developer, “Whether you’re looking to create subtle enhancements or bold stereo effects, S Doubler offers the exibility to tailor the sound to your exact specifications.” Download the free version of S Douber on Solider Sound. Run The Enemy brought even more tragedy to the legacy of Sylvia Plath with their Post-Punk vignette, She Writes Poetry
Poetry may be becoming a dying art form, but it lives and breathes through the hauntingly melodic introspection in the standout single, She Writes Poetry, from Run the Enemy’s hotly anticipated debut album, Trail of Tears. After the post-punk-tinged and angularly cavernous lead guitar work in the prelude, the timbre of the melancholic indie vocal lines spectrally appears in the achingly pensive release which finds the monochrome middle ground between Editors earlier work and Interpol’s most affecting expositions of ennui. With the final crescendo, She Writes Poetry, which gives Richey Edwards and Morrissey a run for their lyrical vignette money, builds into a massive all-encompassing production with strings carving through the post-punk atmosphere. Written to allude to the abusive relationship between Plath and Ted Hughes, the Cambridge-based outfit succeeded in bringing even more tragedy to the legacy of Plath, given that she stuck her head in an oven in her final moments and penned some of the most pensively affecting works to date, that is some feat of ingenuity. Stream She Writes Poetry as part of Run The Enemy’s debut LP, Trail of Tears, on Spotify now. CAMELPHAT Ignites the Dance Floor with Spiritual Milk Remixes PT. 2
As the anticipation for Miami Music Week reaches fever pitch, CAMELPHAT throws fuel to the fire. They are doing so with the latest infusion into their groundbreaking remix album, Spiritual Milk. Hot on the heels of the initial remix rollout, this dynamic duo has unleashed four electrifying new versions that are poised to dominate both club scenes and festival stages. This latest collection features the seasoned artistry of Fideles, Øostil, Tigerblind, and Dorian Craft. This roster showcases the breadth of talent converging on the project, released under the prestigious banners of When Stars Align and The Nations. A Melodic Odyssey with Veteran Flair The remix odyssey embarks with Fideles returning the favor for CAMELPHAT’s remix of the Afterlife hit, ‘Night After Night,’ by delivering a potent reimagining of ‘In Your Eyes.’ This track first reverberated through the crowds of Afterlife Tulum, and has since become a standout anthem. Following closely is Øostil with the album’s third rendition of “In Your Eyes.” Øostil‘s signature melodic techno groove, enriched with a unique blend of synths and kick drums. This marks a compelling addition to the Spiritual Milk saga. The Rising Stars and Their Sonic Innovations Not to be overshadowed, Tigerblind marks a return to the spotlight with a high-octane version of ‘Compute’. This remix ups the tempo and energy in a display of musical prowess. Having lain dormant since 2022, Tigerblind’s resurgence is a clarion call to the industry. It is clear to see why heavyweights like CAMELPHAT, Swedish House Mafia, and Solomun have already thrown their support behind the emerging talent. Dorian Craft then takes us on an afro-house journey with his take on ‘Embers’. Craft infuses the collaboration with Shimza and Julia Church with a rich, cultural tapestry of sound that only he can conjure. A Remix Album that Continues to Evolve With this second batch of remixes, CAMELPHAT not only expands their discography but also cements their status as curators of the evolving dance music landscape. Each artist’s unique approach to remixing tracks from “Spiritual Milk” adds a new layer of depth and dimension to the original compositions. This makes the album a multifaceted gem in the electronic music crown. As we dive into the heart of festival season, CAMELPHAT’s remix album emerges as a beacon for club-goers and festival aficionados alike. This promises an unforgettable auditory experience that resonates with the soul of the dance floor. With the addition of these four remixes, ‘Spiritual Milk’ continues to surprise and captivate. This proves once again that CAMELPHAT is a force to be reckoned with in the music world. As the remix album evolves, it stands as a testament to the duo’s commitment to innovation and their unwavering ability to electrify listeners worldwide. Over Half of U.S. Internet Users Pay For Music Streaming Services
A dozen years have flown by since Spotify first graced the U.S. with its presence, marking a significant shift in how Americans consume music. Fast forward to today, and it’s clear that streaming music has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives. According to the latest insights from the 22nd edition of MusicWatch’s U.S. Annual Music Study, a staggering 91% of the U.S. internet population engaged with a music streaming service in the last year. This data heralds a new era where over half of U.S. internet users aged 13 and over—amounting to 109 million individuals—now subscribe to music streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited. The Changing Landscape of Music Streaming The journey from the early days of internet music streaming to its current state reveals a fascinating evolution in user behavior and technology. Initially, streaming was a novelty, enjoyed by a modest 56% of Americans. This figure surged to 69% in 2014 and breezed past 80% by 2018. The year 2023 marks a milestone, with music streamers surpassing 90% of the internet population for the first time. This growth is not just about numbers; it’s about how and why we listen. MusicWatch counts various forms of streaming, from ad-supported platforms like Spotify and Pandora to video services like YouTube, excluding short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels. The Role of the Internet and Devices The expansion of the U.S. internet population from approximately 125 million in 2012 to 193 million in 2023 underscores the explosion in music streaming adoption. This isn’t just about more people being online; it’s about how they access the internet. The shift from dial-up to high-speed home internet, coupled with the advent of mobile internet, has been instrumental. Moreover, the reasons behind subscription payments have evolved. Early adopters were drawn to features like playlists and social network connectivity. Nowadays, as Russ Crupnick of MusicWatch points out, the convenience of seamless listening across various devices and settings has become the primary motivator. The Financial Tune of Music Streaming As music streaming services have become an integral part of our lives, they’ve also seen a notable increase in per-capita spending on recorded music, which went up by 7% from 2022. This uptick is attributed to organic growth and price inflation, with services like Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music implementing price hikes. These adjustments reflect the value users find in these services, ensuring access to their favorite tunes anytime, anywhere. Music streaming has undoubtedly changed the landscape of music consumption in the U.S., becoming a ubiquitous part of daily life. As technology and user preferences continue to evolve, the harmony between accessibility and enjoyment promises to keep the melody of music streaming alive and well for years to come. AlphaTheta Reveals Euphonia; Their New High-End Rotary Mixer And First Of Its Kind In Pioneer’s History
It’s no secret that vintage is the new trend. Echoes of the past have made their return to the current scene. Vinyl, of course, is the perfect example. Now, AlphaTheta, the new brand developed by Pioneer‘s executives is bringing a luxury product that will certainly set a trend in its target audience. A rotary mixer allows the user to create more subtle, natural mixes and were quite popular back when the scene was in its early days. Alphatheta’s new rotary mixer is called Euphonia. Due to its high-end design, specific needs, such as a proper audio setup, and high-quality physical and digital copies of tracks to play on, you won’t see this become a standard at any big clubs/venues soon. Nonetheless, for those of you who are into the more complex setups and performances, expect to see this baby show up at a big artists’ setup occasionally (Yes, looking at you, Mr. Cox). Euphonia Alphatheta’s Euphonia is a 4 channel mixer, with multiple in and out audios. Its potentiometer-based design aims for a more humane feeling of the transition, making it possible to create an almost invisible transition. It includes an analogic transformer that allows you to work both digitally and analogically. Designed in collaboration with the legendary engineer Rupert Neve, it is definitely a collector’s item, both aesthetically and historically. A most iconic item in the history of the DJ profession, it is no wonder fans have been asking for this one for a long time. Although its design and price range make it quite hard to get one, it will find a loyal crowd that will build culture around it. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll have one of these next to every club mixer. And honestly, why not? The Arcane Insignia opened an unholy doorway with their synthesis of classical instrumentation and prog rock volution, Vagrant’s Throne
The Arcane Insignia’s moniker couldn’t be more fitting following the unveiling of their latest orchestrally aligned acoustic prog rock single, Vagrant’s Throne. The New York City duo set a new benchmark in the genre with this 8-minute epic, released as part of their LP, A Violent Whisper. The dark iteration of classical music still maintains its elegance and opulence as it grapples with the complex signatures of progressive rock’s audacious spirit and the chameleonic vocals which seamlessly shift from the histrionics of New Model Army to the rage and rancour which transcends the furore of Pantera. Formed by Lodrö Nyima, The Arcane Insignia consists of Noah Heau on cello and Nyima handling vocals, percussion, acoustic guitar, and piano. Their music, a unique amalgamation of influences ranging from Tool and Steven Wilson to The Contortionist, allows the classical instrumentation to venture into darker territories than it is typically accustomed to, creating a scintillating new domain where the ornate, cutting classical strings meet cathartic aural oblivion. This fusion also opens an unholy doorway to a realm where anything is plausible and everything is cinematically striking. Following in the footsteps of bands like Ne Obliviscaris, Vagrant’s Throne, which unravels as a compelling exposition […] The post The Arcane Insignia opened an unholy doorway with their synthesis of classical instrumentation and prog rock volution, Vagrant’s Throne appeared first on A&R Factory.

Lynden. – Change: A Melodic Indie Folk Pop Embrace of Vulnerability and Hope
Evoking resonance by versing on our tendency to chase distraction to outrun negative pervasive thoughts and feelings of loneliness, Lynden.’s latest single, Change, melodically thrives on an emotive confluence of indie, pop, and folk and renders your heartstrings raw through the candour. The deep emotional themes which traverse the trappings of anxiety and depression go beyond touching on the darkness that finds a way of leaving a shadow over all of our lives. Lynden. used the opportunity to advocate for the vulnerability of honesty and to extend hope to people who need to hear that world views are malleable. In short, If this world is just illusion, choose one that fulfils you. Starting with simple acoustic guitar chords and evolving into an intimately all-encompassing production which echoes the appeal of Violent Femmes and The Maccabees’ more melancholic work, the Burnley-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist orchestrated a soundscape which sonically visualises the tenderness of the lyrical narrative, while injecting enough rhythmic zeal to give Change an all-too efficacious uplifting energy. After receiving critical acclaim and over 24k streams for his last single, You, Lynden. is leaving his affectingly intimate mark on the indie landscape; we can’t think of a more worthy breakthrough […] The post Lynden. – Change: A Melodic Indie Folk Pop Embrace of Vulnerability and Hope appeared first on A&R Factory.

Nick Cave Meets the National in Harry White’s Latest Feat of Melancholic Liberation, A Way to Go
Harry White’s single, A Way to Go, extracted from his seminal LP Elvera, released on February 23rd, is a profound exploration of introspective lyricism and eclectic soundscapes. The London-based artist embarked on a new musical chapter with his third album. A Way To Go, in particular, stands out as a vivid illustration of White’s artistic evolution. The influence of Nick Cave permeates through the keys and the gravelly drama of the vocal lines, while the introspective and intimate lyrics carry the magnetic flair of Leonard Cohen. White’s venture into a more eclectic sound palette is evident in the fusion of electronic effects and the inclusion of a scratchily turbulent backbeat, hinting at The National’s influence. This backdrop is more than just a sonic layer; it’s a canvas for White’s philosophy that the world’s end is inevitable, regardless of individual actions. This theme, rather than being oppressive, is presented with a liberating twist, making A Way to Go a paradoxically uplifting anthem of melancholy. The track is a compelling blend of styles, reminiscent of the transcendent zeal of ELO, yet amplified with a gothic romanticism unique to White. As the singer-songwriter gears up for live performances, A Way to Go solidifies […] The post Nick Cave Meets the National in Harry White’s Latest Feat of Melancholic Liberation, A Way to Go appeared first on A&R Factory.

The Anatomy of an Earworm: How to Create an Unforgettable Hit
Everyone knows the feeling of having a lyric or melody reverberating around their brain, leading to an irresistible urge to scratch the earworm itch and hit play on the track. But why does it happen? And more importantly, for artists wanting to live rent-free in the minds of music fans, what are some of the most crucial components of a perennial earworm? In this article, we will cover a few of the key fundamentals in the creation of infectious hits after exploring the psychology of aural addictions and how platforms, such as TikTok, have changed the way we get hooked on hooks. How Earworms Bed Down Before catchy singles were known as earworms, they were referred to as ‘sticky tunes’; regardless of the buzz words/phrases used to describe them, they allude to the phenomenon, scientifically known as involuntary musical imagery, which is a fascinating interplay of memory, emotion, and the brain’s wiring. For the perfect metaphor, imagine your brain as a DJ, constantly mixing tracks for your sole audio pleasure. When a song becomes an earworm, it’s like the DJ has put a particular track on repeat. Several factors contribute to this: Repetition and Familiarity: Our brain loves patterns and […] The post The Anatomy of an Earworm: How to Create an Unforgettable Hit appeared first on A&R Factory.

‘By The River’ – Massane (Aalson Remix)
This Never Happened has introduced us to artists we love, music that fills our soul, and much more. One of their latest releases is Massane’s track ‘By The River‘, which has been remixed by Aaslon. The track is now available on all streaming platforms, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. By The River Fans of melodic house and electronica may already know Massane, a musician from France who has found a home on Lane 8’s This Never Happened Label. Last summer, he released his sophomore album By The River, which draws on his creative energy from both the dancefloor and the people. The album features 12 tracks that stay true to Massane’s calming style while also exploring a range of genres, from guitar-driven melodic house to dramatic melodic techno and hints of pop. By The River kicks off with the title track, featuring Benjamin Roustaing’s powerful vocals and Massane’s beautiful composition of guitar and piano.
