  1. The National Music Publisher’s Association (NMPA) held its yearly gathering at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, New York. The New York event honored songwriters including Lana Del Rey, featured a fireside chat with WMG CEO Robert Kyncl, and the reveal of the U.S. music publishing revenue in the last year — $6.2 billion — but what got the most attention was the raised concerns about Spotify‘s bundling strategy. NMPA President & CEO, David Israelite, outlined a complaint the organization sent to the FTC regarding Spotify’s bundling scheme, urging government intervention. It’s estimated that Spotify will pay $150 million less in music royalties this year because of its audiobook bundling. The NMPA alleges that Spotify is misleading its customers by automatically switching its music subscribers to these bundled plans without their consent. They argue that Spotify is not providing an option for subscribers to switch back to a music-only subscription and is making it difficult to cancel through confusing website interfaces and dark patterns. The NMPA hopes the FTC will take action against Spotify’s bundling, pointing out that its Audiobook Access Tier is exclusively available in the United States, which they see as an attempt to exploit U.S. royalty regulations established in the Phonorecords IV settlement. Israelite criticized Spotify’s move to reclassify its music service as an audiobook bundle as a cynical and potentially illegal action, disrupting the peace agreed upon in 2022. The NMPA is considering all options and has filed a complaint with the FTC. Although an agreement was reached to modernize the treatment of bundled products or services containing music streaming, the NMPA accuses Spotify of violating the spirit of the agreement by offering Premium plans at a rate lower than the established headline rate for 2024. 2. Following the successes of his two recent tracks, ‘HIGHER STATE’ and ‘Come With Me’, the Scottish Progressive and Tech House maestro Grum unveiled his newest track, ‘The Way To The Light’. This upbeat beat contains a fantastic dose of rolling bass lines, ethereal synths, and steady drum kicks that aim to get one’s body to move to the groove in an instant. It is also a track to help get through the rest of the day before you arrive at that amazing 3, 4 or 5 p.m. mark this evening. ‘The Way To The Light’ represents another step in the wonderful career that Grum has cultivated nearly the past couple of decades. It also represents a continuing path for his career since the artist has been taking a more aggressive, acid-like direction for his music production while still maintaining the same passion for creating one-of-a-kind tracks that fans can continue putting on repeat. Marking a truly iconic return, Boiler Room will be inviting Charli XCX to take over the Terraza with an all-star lineup including Shygirl, Romy, Kelly Lee Owens and more, whilst Boiler Room family Taylah Elaine, Call Super and KETTAMA are set to play in the Club room. The one-off takeover follows shortly after the massive viral success of Boiler Room & Charli XCX pres. PARTYGIRL event, which took place in New York earlier this year. Breaking Boiler Room records and taking social media by storm, Boiler Room & Charli XCX pres. PARTYGIRL received over 40,000 RSVPs—the most in Boiler Room history—and featured performances from A. G. Cook, George Daniel, Finn Keane and Doss as well as special appearances from Addison Rae and Julia Fox. Watch the Charli XCX pres. PARTYGIRL stream here. 4. The second annual Regenerate Festival, produced by AEG Presents and 128 Productions, returned with a two day EDM extravaganza at Civic Center Park in downtown Denver. Held June 7-8, the 2024 edition delivered an unparalleled lineup featuring Electronic music’s finest, including everyone’s favorite accountant, John Summit, the legendary Eric Prydz, Purple Disco Machine, Disco Lines, Gorgon City, Ben Böhmer, and many more. Established as Denver’s premier House and Techno-focused festival, Regenerate has blossomed into the Mile High City’s largest electronic music gathering. Boasting three distinct stages, the atmosphere of the lush park meshed perfectly with the backdrop of the Colorado State Capitol for a celebratory and electrifying experience. In addition to headlining acts, the festival showcased a diverse array of talent, including Agents of Time (my favorite set of the festival), Ayybo, Cassian, Eli & Fur, Kasablanca, Layton Giordani, Marsh, Miane, Nimino, Qrion, TDJ, Adam Stark, and Torren Foot. At City Hall stage, the headlining acts were backlit with the spectacle of Denver’s Greek Revival City and County Building, which was purposely built to preserve the view of the front range mountains. A gorgeous sunset was the free light show; on stage, the acts were accompanied by pyro, smoke machines, lasers, and the occasional fireworks display. The bass was loud and the attendees at the upscale gala being held at the Art Museum across the street were probably less than thrilled with the rave going on next door, but them’s the breaks when the city decides to allow multipurpose use in the same district. To Denver’s credit, the restoration of Civic Center Park has been priority since COVID essentially turned it into a wasteland, so seeing life breathed back into the grounds does give you hope for the future of downtown. The Greek Theatre is where I had the privilege of seeing Eric Prydz lay down IMHO one of the best sets of his career, full of deep cuts and IDs. Even when reduced to a secondary stage, the man takes you on a journey that makes you forget the time, place, and location and all that matters is that you’re dancing and it feels right. The crowd was respectful at this stage and the eerie environment of the crescent-shaped amphitheater at dusk-to-night transported you to another world. The third stage was the Secret Garden, where just one week earlier I spent most of my time at the Outside Festival (shoutout to the Purina Incredible Dog Experience). At Regenerate, the grassy knoll was the intimate setting for Denver’s impressive class of local DJs — AMBA, Bodega Cats, IIVX, Josh Fedz, Lorely Mur, Pandorah, Paradime, RC3, SISS, Sonrizas, Sparkle, and Wessyde — who keep the scene going even when the headliners fly over us on their way to Los Angeles. Because it’s Colorado, temperatures were hot in the sun, yet cool in the shade, with relief at night and an ever-present threat of unpredictable storms. There was a brief sprinkle of rain on Day 1 and the wind was intense for a period on Day 2, but overall the weather held up and you couldn’t ask for much more. As with all festivals, lines for the bar and food trucks were long but cleared out as the big names took to their individual stages. Alcoholic drinks were up to $17 but my $8 mocktail was more than enough to keep me hydrated through the day. Ending at 10 PM due to the public park’s curfew, the night was young for attendees as they headed off on Lime scooters and ride shares to continue the party. Regenerate Festival solidified its place as a cornerstone of Denver’s vibrant Electronic music scene, leaving attendees hopeful for its return next year. Stay up-to-date at regeneratedenver.com. 7. Nathan's loss is Zeds Dead's gain after their record label, Deadbeats, invited competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut to relish a new challenge. Chestnut won't compete in this year's Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest after its organizers, Major League Eating, banned him for working with a rival brand, Impossible Foods. Chestnut, who is prevalently considered the greatest professional eater in history, has won the famed Fourth of July competition every year since 2016. Chestnut holds an astounding 56 records, including scarfing down 76 Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and Buns in just 10 minutes on July 4th, 2021. That record, however, won't soon be broken by "Jaws." "I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title," Chestnut said in a statement. "To set the record straight, I do not have a contract with MLE or Nathan's and they are looking to change the rules from past years as it relates to other partners I can work with. This is apparently the basis on which I’m being banned, and it doesn’t impact the July 4th contest. Sadly, this is the decision Nathan's and Major League Eating are making and it will deprive the great fans of the holiday’s usual joy and entertainment." View the original article to see embedded media. Deadbeats has now extended an invitation to join the label's hot dog-eating contest at the 2024 edition of their "Backyard Jamboree" festival experience, which is scheduled for July 4th in Denver. The beloved dubstep label annually organizes the competition as part of the event's festivities at Civic Center Park. "You are cordially invited to gobble any and as many glizzies you want at the Deadbeats Backyard Jamboree on July 4th in Denver where we host the biggest hot dog eating competition west of the Mississippi," the label wrote on X. The chances of Chestnut joining Deadbeats' contest are unfortunately dubious considering his high demand and lofty appearance fee. He was paid $200,000 to appear in the 2023 Nathan's contest and was offered a four-year, $1.2 million contract going forward, the New York Post reported. Your odds are much better. The team at EDM.com recently joined forces with Deadbeats and Zeds Dead to launch a special giveaway for a spot in their hot dog-eating competition, which you can enter here.
  8. Oh, how we’d missed you, Mr Bluestone! Fans of Trance, spice, and everything nice (hope you get that reference): regroup once more today for a hot new tune! We’ve heard the news that our favourite Progressive Trance veteran ilan Bluestone is back in Dance Town, and he’s doing so in style — not that we expected anything less anyway. Like most, ilan’s journey in Electronic music began with a spark of passion at a young age. Unlike most, he got to the top of the Trance world, and he’s been up there for a good chunk of years, showing no signs of coming back down. Over 10 years ago, landing a spot on the esteemed Anjunabeats label became a pivotal moment for him. Once a stone, quickly rose to a gem in the span of just a few years. He directed a few compilations on the label, played alongside Above & Beyond on their ABGT milestone gigs, and released uncountable singles and not one, two artist albums. Past that era and following his initial focus on Trance, ilan Bluestone has continuously demonstrated artistic evolution. He’s dared incorporate elements of Progressive House and other genres such as Techno into his productions, and has worked with — and remixed — some of the greatest artists out there. A few examples are Paul van Dyk, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Chicane, Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyond, and BT. ilan Bluestone playing at Tomorrowland Belgium 2022. ‘Echoes of Courage’ After a period of spellbinding remixes, collaborations, and even releases under the Elysian moniker — alongside Maor Levi and Emma Hewitt —, ilan is now lifting the veil on his first solo track in over a year, ‘Echoes of Courage‘. Premiered by Armin van Buuren at A State of Trance 2024 in Rotterdam and included on the ‘A State of Trance 2024’ mix album, this track also serves as Bluestone’s original track debut on the legendary Armind label. If there’s something one could point out straight away from ilan’s more recent sound is the fact that he’s been using warm, analogue saws in quite the old-fashioned fashion. It’s a nice, sober, elegant touch to an already top-notch sound. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for his older Anjuna stuff as it is the one repertoire that got me into Trance in the first place, but I love this little piece of ear candy that hints at yesteryear’s Trance trends. And regarding the rest of the track — since I dove so deep into just one sound —, this one is the true embodiment of a Progressive Trance tune. It’s got Trance written all over it, with arpeggios, leads, the saws previously mentioned, and floaty textures, but it has just as much power and bite during the drops, which carry all the energy that is synonym to the ilan Bluestone sound that has become a trailblazer for many. Listen to ilan Bluestone‘s ‘Echoes of Courage‘ by hitting ‘Play’ on the Spotify player we’ve attached. Also, make sure to click this link to support the track on your platform of choice. 9. Zonderling’s ‘Variant‘ dominated dance floors worldwide in 2023, garnering acclaim from top-tier DJs such as David Guetta, deadmau5, Dom Dolla, Don Diablo, Oliver Heldens, R3HAB, Tiësto, and more. This infectious track became a staple in sets across the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the electronic music scene. Now, the legendary HI-LO, Oliver Heldens’ darker alter ego, has reimagined this anthem, breathing new life into it. The Remix HILOMATIK proudly presents ‘Variant (HI-LO Variant)’, a techno-infused rework of Zonderling’s iconic track. HI-LO, known for his mastery in crafting underground beats, adds a fresh and compelling layer to the original. This remix is a testament to Heldens’ versatility, seamlessly blending his signature dark techno sound with Zonderling’s vibrant melodies. The result is an electrifying journey through pulsating rhythms and hypnotic soundscapes that captivates listeners from start to finish. A New Sonic Experience ‘Variant (HI-LO Variant)’ is more than just a remix; it’s a sonic experience that pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo of electronic music. HI-LO’s touch brings a raw, underground edge to Zonderling’s already dynamic track, creating a fusion that is both innovative and exhilarating. The driving beats and hypnotic melodies are perfect for late-night sets and underground raves, ensuring the track resonates with fans of both artists. Availability ‘Variant (HI-LO Variant)’ is now available via HILOMATIK, ready to take over dance floors once again. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Zonderling or a lover of HI-LO’s dark techno vibes, this track is a must-listen. 10. The latest from a living legend of the genre is out today for the world to enjoy. Ferry Corsten is a name synonymous with Trance music. Having established himself over two decades ago, his influence on the genre, as well as the entirety of the Dance spectrum, is undeniable. From the iconic System F hit ‘Out Of The Blue’ to the moving melody of Gouryella’s ‘Anahera’, Corsten’s hand has been there for a lot longer than one could say about the vast majority of artists rocking the charts today. With nine studio albums under his belt, Ferry has taken his sweet, sweet time slowly lifting the veil on the contents of his tenth long play, Connect. For close to a year now, we’ve been able to enjoy, one track at a time, a very welcome return to the roots of Trance, a genre that Corsten himself helped define. Imagine the uplifting melodies and driving rhythms of the golden era, meticulously crafted with the production techniques of today. This fusion of past and present is the intention of this album. Ferry a few months ago at the ASOT 2024 weekend. Ferry himself added in our exclusive interview with him a couple of months ago, “The album has the bonus of pleasing older fans who have been longing for that old Ferry sound for a long time“. Check out the rest of our deep, introspective chat with him, right here. ‘Belong To You’ After tracks like ‘Yes Man’ and ‘Fulfillment’ alongside Progressive star Marsh, he’s teaming up with 22Bullets to unveil the seventh piece of the album, ‘Belong To You‘. A very fast-growing talent in the Dance scene, 22Bullets has had releases on labels such as Spinnin’ and Dharma, and even collaborated on a track released on the latter with none other than the owner of the label himself, KSHMR. Featuring the vocals of Couché, the track seamlessly blends aspects of Trance, Deep House, and Progressive House, for an excellent finish. Gated pads, soft arpeggios, and even a playful spin on the classic ‘Insomnia’ pluck all make an appearance, and once again prove Ferry’s words back in December were 100% based on what he envisioned with this album. Sublime, as is the norm. Listen to Ferry Corsten & 22Bullets feat. Couché’s ‘Belong To You’ down below for your Spotify play. Also, click this link to support the track on your platform of choice. 13. We normal folk get upset when our simple Word or Excel documents don’t fully save properly after a long day of working with those platforms. Can you imagine as a DJ returning back to your vehicle after a quick dinner in Ibiza and finding every single piece of your gear and therefore all your discography is missing? Yeah, it’s gut-wrenching. That’s exactly what happened to Franky Wah just this week. The producer, clearly distressed, posted on his Instagram page explaining that many of his items were taken from the car while he was at a restaurant. These items include his laptop with all of his music on it. Franky asked his followers to share the post in hopes that they may be able to find the items with the help of a reward. Of course, fellow DJs and even helpful strangers on the internet have been sharing and commenting with support or ideas of how to possibly track everything down. This news comes shortly after Hot Since 82 was recently targeted in Brazil. We hope everyone’s safety remains a top priority. Here’s hoping that some good luck comes his way. We can only imagine the devastation – please share if you can. The post Franky Wah Calls For Help After Thieves Steal All His Equipment in Ibiza appeared first on EDMTunes.

  15. ‘Intoxicated‘, a collaborative effort between BIJOU and No Thanks. This high-energy tech house banger is sure to set dance floors ablaze with its infectious groove and hypnotic melodies. From the first pulsating kick drum, ‘Intoxicated‘ grabs the listener’s attention with its techy, housy vibes and a captivating main theme that weaves its way through the arrangement. As the track progresses, the energy builds with intricate rhythmic progressions and euphoric synth work, culminating in an exhilarating breakdown that drops into a pure tech house frenzy. As BIJOU explains, “I’ve been a huge fan of No Thanks since day one, so after playing countless shows together, it only made sense to finally write a banger together!” The collaborative process was a labor of love, with the duo working through multiple ideas before settling on the perfect record. “We went through a couple of different records before really deciding this was the one to release,” BIJOU reveals. “It has that classic BIJOU sound with the No Thanks swag that we know so well.” As BIJOU proudly states, “Stoked to finally get this one out and continue to support No Thanks as the next ones up!.” The post Captivating and techy, housy vibes: BIJOU, No Thanks ‘Intoxicated’ appeared first on The Groove Cartel.

  18. In a quick one minute video posted on his Instagram, James Hype has made the announcement of banning phones for the rest of his residency together with Italian group, Meduza. Taking place every Friday in the Club Room of HÏ IBIZA, from now on, the fans will be requested not to use their mobile devices and just dive into the experience that the ‘Our House‘ show offers. James stated that the Club Room at HÏ IBIZA is the best venue to put the ‘no phone rule’ in place as the room, is dark and there are no big screens to take videos of. This creates an intimate atmosphere between the DJ and the crowd, hopefully immersing people more into the music rather than fascinating visuals. While the British DJ mentioned he loves seeing people sharing videos from his shows on social media, he also talked about events where he played and no phones were allowed and how much that changes the environment in the club. As much as this is about the artist getting a better connection with the crowd, James also stated that he wants to give younger people the opportunity to see what raves were like back in the days when no such filming devices existed. John Summit has also spoken on this topic in a Twitter post that he made last month. As many of you may know already, he is ‘the man in finance’ some girls look out for, having a master’s degree in accounting. The American DJ mentioned he would rather retire and work as an accountant while playing parties where people actually dance, instead of making a fortune playing shows where the crowd is there for social media and forget the actual meaning of a rave. He later added to the idea saying “not sure how much I even mean this I’m truly just burnt out belief right now.”
  19. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike x Will Sparks – Rave Generator With the build up to Tomorrowland well and truly underway, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are building their own hype by releasing one of their most highly antiicpated singles from their 2023 set, ‘Rave Generator’ with Will Sparks. Nicky Romero x Third Party – Bad Boy Combining their own respective styles to deliver ‘For The People’ in 2022, Nicky Romero and Third Party officially link up for the 2nd time to bring us the follow up titled ‘Bad Boy’. Much like what came before, this single is a peak time electro smasher that will have hands up on the dancefloor instantly. Billy Gillies ft. Betsy – Fair Following on from last year’s hit ‘DNA (Loving You)’, Billy Gillies teams up alongside Betsy for ‘Fair’. Much like the previous release, this single has become an instant success online, appearing on a series of popular TikTok videos. No that it’s out the whole world can enjoy it this Summer. Malóne & Jesse Bravo – Beef Since launching his own label and event series WHYNOTUS earlier this year, Club Space resident and globally touring artist Malóne has been dropping tech and afro house heaters left and right. Now, he has joined forces with fellow Miami-based DJ, Jesse Bravo, on their collaborative anthem, ‘Beef’. This track is fueled by 90s-esque rap lyrics and a groovy tech house bassline. Don Diablo & R3HAB ft. NEEKA – Disco Marathon Dance music titans Don Diablo and R3HAB join forces for the first time ever on their new summer anthem ‘Disco Marathon’ featuring NEEKA. Their new single is a fun and carefree celebration of all things summer, a technicolor dream of uplifting piano melodies and dancefloor-commanding beats. 20. Martin Ikin, a master of tech house music, is back on Toolroom Records, with a hot new song Control it, featuring Winnie Ama‘s vocals. Ikin has made a huge amount of great music over the years. He is currently the 8th best-selling artist of all time on the hugely popular download site Beatport. This shows how well his works have connected with DJs and dance music fans around the world. With the new song, Ikin and Toolroom get back together in a way that feels like it was always meant to be. He has been a mainstay of the legendary label’s consistently high-quality work for a long time. He has also helped with some of their biggest releases over the years. Each Ikin production is unique. It combines surgically exact rhythmic programming with synth work fit for an arena and energy levels set to their highest level during peak time. Ikin has asked British singer Winnie Ama to sing on the mic for his latest Toolroom show to boost the energy even more. Her high topline floats on top of the record’s pulsing tech house grooves, giving the midtempo machine churner an enticing human soul. The voices get hypnotic and epic, making them the perfect hook to get people into the track while the scorching synths and unbelievably tight drums do their thing on the dancefloor. Ikin has played at some of the world’s best clubs, like Fabrik in Madrid and Space Miami in Florida. He has also played at big festivals, like Drumsheds London, which held 15,000 people. His new Toolroom album with Winnie Ama is clearly made for peak-time chaos. Martin Ikin, Winnie Ama Control It is out now via Toolroom. 21. Forget playing with fire—Roy LaCroix wants you burning up from the inside out with his sweltering new house track, "Tabasco." The LA-based DJ and producer crafts a wonky beat with a seductive vocal hook, each line dripping with sizzling innuendo. The result is a deliciously unconventional house anthem that sears the senses with its smoldering wordplay and chugging basslines. LaCroix even used actual peppers to bring the track to life, clasping them with alligator clips and routing them to Ableton Live as MIDI via a Playtron unit. "Tabasco" is a steamy love letter to spicy condiments and the burn they provide, likening a muse to a "sriracha queen" whose "spices don't expire." Alongside a drop that slinks and contorts with quirky synths, LaCroix's lyrics manage to turn something as mundane as hot sauce into an aural aphrodisiac. All said and done, the new single is a party on a plate—weird, wonderfully wonky and guaranteed to leave you reaching for a metaphorical glass of water. 22. Eventually we all become imprisoned in the pressure cooker of our own lives, our jobs, relationships, health, finances and friendships simmering beneath the surface but always at risk of a messy boil-over. Tove Lo and SG Lewis want to provide the pressure valve. The duo moments ago dropped their new EP, HEAT, a pulsing soundtrack for stolen glances and whispered promises. Speaking with EDM.com, it's clear they believe that confidence and true inner peace aren't achieved in the absence of noise, but in the places where it's loudest: dancefloors. Lewis' recent transformation to a rave revivalist has been fascinating to watch. Ditching the velvet-lined corridors of future-disco, the renowned producer and singer-songwriter launched his own record label, which he tells us provides a refuge to create club-focused records "without any commercial ambition." HEAT is a meeting of two brilliantly creative minds united by a shared devotion to making sweat-drenched memories on the dancefloor. The sensual slink of Lewis' music has been dumped like sour milk for the brazen badassery of Tove Lo, who has always created songs for the bold and uninhibited. The Swedish pop iconoclast is also transforming; she's still the "cool girl," but she's no longer ice-cold, nor rolling her eyes at you. That stoic bravado melts away atop the coals of Lewis' fiery club production in HEAT, turning into something more fluid and free. View the original article to see embedded media. As Tove Lo herself describes it, the connection with Lewis is one "that rarely happens," a confluence of artistic visions that crackles like flint meeting tinder. Their prior collaborations, scattered like embers across their own albums, hinted at this potential—but the fire is now raging. "It needs to be a situation where you feel like you can be completely vulnerable and just show whatever comes to mind, but still want to impress the person," Tove Lo explains before turning to Lewis. "I feel very comfortable in the room with you and at the same time, want to impress you." "In the same way, I know that I have to bring my A-game in the studio with Tove," adds Lewis, who said he's indebted to his collaborator for learning how to "maximize the potential of a song." "I know that if I tee her up with something great, every single time she’s going to deliver something that betters what I did. So it's that kind of back-and-forth I think creates this instant studio chemistry. It's crazy how effective the results are. We’ve rarely been in the studio without leaving with something that we’re very excited about." One of the project's undeniable highlights is its smoldering titular track, "HEAT," which seethes with the unspoken language of the dancefloor. Wrapped in a palpitating house beat, Tove Lo's come-hither lyrics paint a picture of sexual tension as a flickering flame—alluring from afar, but scorching to those who touch. "Staring is free" becomes a cruel invitation, a reminder that some can only handle the sizzle, not the inferno. "HEAT" is a radiant display of bravura from Lewis and Lo, who said it best encapsulates the unapologetically hedonistic ethos of its namesake EP. "It's sweaty, high-energy, confident, flirty, corny music," she says with a laugh. The track arrives alongside a steamy music video filmed at London's iconic Electrowerkz club, a linchpin of the UK's queer nightlife scene. The duo recently debuted their "CLUB HEAT" concept at an intimate party in the city and are now set to take a giant leap to the hallowed grounds of Glastonbury on June 28th. Just like that wild night, HEAT is meant to be experienced in a packed space, disengaged from the bothersome burdens of the external world. From the Eurodance euphoria of "Desire" to the house-fueled braggadocio of "Busy Girl," its an exercise in reckless abandon—the kind where you wake up with a hangover and plenty of mistakes made, but no regrets. What tangible steps can you take to conjure this cathartic dancefloor release promised by the "CLUB HEAT" experience? "Call your most unhinged friend," Tove Lo says. "And don’t bring a jacket, don't bring a big bag—the smallest bag, if any bag, so your hands are free. Put on your best dancing, comfortable shoes but then a really sexy look." "And then just find the sweatiest dancefloor you can find. Not a bottle service club, not some dive bar. You need to find the rave." 23. From house music to experimental bass and now rap, Barclay Crenshaw is proving that he can do it all. His new single, "Cannibal Strings," highlights an unapologetic willingness to step outside of the box and experiment with new sounds. Influenced by hip-hop icons MF Doom and Rakim, Crenshaw takes to the mic to grapple with his life's changes and tap into his Detroit roots. Clever, tongue-in-cheek lyrics compliment a percussion-heavy hip-hop beat with a punchy vocal hook in "Cannibal Strings." The track is a stark contrast from the sound of the bass music virtuoso, who recently released his debut album, Open Channel. "I have made hip-hop in the past but never donned the mic as the emcee on an official release," Crenshaw said in a press release. "As early as 11 years old I was beatboxing into one tape deck then playing it back and rapping into another in his bathtub (for the reverb.) In the early 90s, I even recorded a full rap album and sold the cassettes door-to-door and made $800. On 'Cannibal Strings' I discuss the sale of my record label and the wild change from being a 20-year veteran house DJ [Claude VonStroke] to a brand new emcee." Barclay Crenshaw.Don Idio/DI Visuals Fearlessly crafting his fresh narrative and testing out bold, new sounds, Crenshaw's experimental attitude and unique perspective are propelling him forward. "This BC project is all about getting over all my hangups and fears," reads a newsletter he issued yesterday. "Regardless of how this music is received, thank you to the people who support me and enable me to take risks and put myself out there. I’ve grown more as an artist this year than the last 10 years combined and I truly appreciate the people who are on this journey with me." Crenshaw also announced he's offering special music packages "for any hungry remixers out there" featuring liner notes, lyrics, uncompressed audio and more. Remixers are encouraged to send their versions to the producer after accessing the bundles. Hot off the heels of an innovative Caverns show and performance at the dazzling 2024 edition of Detroit's iconic Movement Festival, Crenshaw continues to power through his tour with energy and finesse. His next stops include Electric Forest and Shambhala, among other major festivals. Listen to "Cannibal Strings" below and find the new single on streaming platforms here. 25. Marking his first official release of the year, AMILI has returned with “I Can See,” an infectious record that blends the barriers between underground and mainstage dance music. AMILI started producing electronic music at the age of 16, striving to create a unique blend of house, electro and big room music. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Steve Angello, Chris Lake, Mau P and more, the promising producer kickstarted his career early last year with the catchy “No Matter.” His fifth single “Rather,” which was released in December 2023, has become his most successful to date. But it's now being challenged by “I Can See," a scintillating dance track. Packing heaps of energy throughout, the track beautifully blends minimalist production with maximalist energy. An atmospheric buildup introduces listeners to AMILI’s haunting sound as snappy vocal samples and intricate melodies lead the way toward the drop. The climax of “I Can See” then explodes with the help of thumping kicks and groovy basslines, as more and more elements are introduced to create an irresistible dancefloor gem.
