Spotify Spills The Beans: Unveiling The Numbers Behind Your Streams
For musicians, music streaming has been a financial enigma wrapped in an algorithm. Millions of streams accrue, but how much does it translate to in their pockets? Spotify, the music giant, is finally cracking open the black box with the launch of Loud & Clear, a website dedicated to demystifying music streaming economics with hard data. Buckle up, musicians, because these numbers are about to get really interesting. Payout Party: A Record-Breaking Year Let’s kick things off with the headline stat: Spotify dished out a record-breaking $9 billion+ to the music industry in 2023 alone. That’s a nearly threefold increase over the past six years! This represents a significant rise in artist payouts, highlighting the undeniable potential of streaming revenue. A Sea of Artists, a River of Royalties: Here’s a number that might surprise you: over 10 million artists have uploaded at least one track to Spotify. That’s a vast ocean of talent vying for attention. While the dream of becoming the next global superstar exists, the financial reality is unevenly distributed. The Long Tail Struggle: Not All Streams Are Created Equal Loud & Clear dives deeper, revealing a crucial truth: the streaming game is fiercely competitive. Here’s a stat that paints a vivid picture: a staggering 5 million artists haven’t even cracked 100 streams across their entire catalogue. That’s half of the artists on the platform! This highlights the long tail of streaming, where countless talented artists are battling for that breakout moment. Breaking Down the Buckets: Who Gets Paid, and How Much? Money doesn’t magically appear when someone hits play. Loud & Clear sheds light on how those payouts are actually divided. Here’s a breakdown, with some key figures: Artists: This is the big one! A portion of each stream goes directly to the artists (or their rights holders) behind the music. The exact amount depends on factors like streaming agreements and royalty splits, but Spotify emphasizes they pay out more than any other streaming service. Songwriters and Publishers: Don’t forget the folks behind the tunes! Songwriters and publishers receive a share, typically around 10-15%, of the royalties for their creative contributions. Streaming Services: Let’s not forget Spotify itself. They take a significant cut, typically around 50%, to cover operational costs like licensing fees, maintaining the platform, and marketing. Beyond Spotify: The Global Streaming Landscape While Spotify boasts a massive user base, they understand they’re not the only game in town. The total global recorded music revenue pie is much bigger, with estimates suggesting streaming services contribute over 20%. This reminds artists that diversifying their presence across multiple platforms can be a smart strategy to capture a larger slice of the pie. Numbers for the Win: Data-Driven Decisions for Musicians Loud & Clear provides access to valuable data on royalty payouts and listener statistics – essentially, how much your music is earning and where your fans are located. This intel is a game-changer. Imagine being able to see which countries stream your music the most (over 329,000 songs were streamed over a million times in 2023 alone!) and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly. The Future of Streaming: Transparency is Key Loud & Clear represents a significant step towards a more transparent music streaming industry. By revealing these numbers and empowering artists with data, Spotify is fostering a more informed and empowered music community. This newfound knowledge allows artists to navigate the complexities of the streaming world with greater confidence, make data-driven decisions about their careers, and ultimately, maximize their musical impact. So, the next time someone asks “how much do you make per stream?”, you can confidently answer with real numbers and a strategic plan to grow your audience and income. Now get out there and create – the world is waiting to hear your music! Check out the full article and key figures in the website here. Mark Knight Wins 2024 EDMA Icon Award
Renowned DJ and house music producer Mark Knight has won the coveted Icon Award at the 2024 Electronic Dance Music Awards. It's a well-deserved win for Knight, a tried-and-true trailblazer whose record label, Toolroom, has deeply influenced the dance music industry for two decades. The imprint, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has been a launching pad for countless artists since its 2003 inception. Thanks to Knight's cerebral approach to production, the terra firma beneath his music's feet has always been permeated with soul. In addition to his bottomless abyss of generational house anthems, Knight's remix work has also been pivotal, reinventing classics like Avicii's "My Feelings For You" and giving them new life for a modern audience. "My entire career in music has been driven by my love of music," Knight tells EDM.com. "That's why I got into it, and why I'm still doing it today. For me it was never about awards, but the fact that people have recognized my passion and contribution to music is incredibly overwhelming and I'd like to say a huge thank you to the EDMAs and to each and every person who has supported me throughout my career." Mark Knight, the winner of the 2024 EDMA Icon Award.Karel Chladek The EDMAs are prevalently considered today's preeminent award show for its namesake genre. Driven by its fan-based voting system, the MTV-style ceremony dishes out unique trophies as mementos, which resemble DJ decks and feature a functional jog-wheel. Last year's celebration in Miami saw wins by Martin Garrix, Zedd, NERVO and trance legend Armin van Buuren, among many other prominent electronic music artists. "These accolades are a huge motivation for me because they mean that the fans genuinely care," van Buuren said at the time. "They see you, hear you and enjoy your music, which is the very reason why I do this." The 2024 EDMA ceremony is scheduled for Friday, March 22nd at Miami's Eden Roc Hotel. A number of the nation's leading radio stations will broadcast the event both on-air and digitally. You can find the full list of 2024 EDMA nominations here. Rezz Teases Horror-Themed Festival, HYPNO CIRCUS
Rezz is cooking up something terrifying for her fans after teasing a brand-new, curated festival, HYPNO CIRCUS. The Canadian electronic music superstar shared the event with fans in a post on X, calling it a "2 day outdoor fest style event" with a "psychedelic/horror/circus" theme. Details surrounding HYPNO CIRCUS are scarce at this time, but Rezz did reveal its concept art, which you can check out below. It's a very good time to be a fan of Rezz. Since the start of 2024, she's treated fans to collaborations with Subtronics, Blanke and more as well as a new album, CAN YOU SEE ME?, which she called the "heaviest" of her career. On the merchandise front, she's finally set to deliver on her most-requested merch item, her signature LED glasses, which will join her most recent release, a branded sex toy that sold out in under 30 minutes. It's important to note that HYPNO CIRCUS is merely a concept at the time of this writing. The event has not been formally announced and there are no tickets on sale. Set amongst Thailand’s sprawling lagoon waterpark, we set out for the launch of the Mumu Clubhouse, an incredible new venue set for both daytime relaxation and nighttime revelry. Surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty and heightened by great designs that mould into the landscape, we sat back and enjoyed a perfect place for a blissed-out escape both by day and also once the sun fades away. Porter Robinson Releases ‘Cheerleader’, First Solo Track in Two Years
Porter Robinson‘s first single from his third artist album has dropped! We finally can confirm, even though we heard from the man himself, that he’s tapping into the 2010-2013 Indie Rock era. Of course, he’s added his own Porter twist to it as well as his own vocals! In an IG Live Porter did with jamesjamesjames, Wavedash, Frost Children, Rezz, and his wife Rika shortly after the song dropped, Porter asked Rika what is one word that could describe the new album. Rika said, with a smile on her face, “pure fun“. Porter agreed and added “I haven’t played with high energy in a while.” Porter also gushed about how insanely happy he was at the moment even with very little sleep as he anticipated something going wrong with the release at 11 AM CST today. He seemed the most confident than he’s ever been – stepping away from the emotional and slower BPM of Nuture and a pivot from Worlds. It feels like he’s in his zany and anime-influenced era with emotions and, of course, his love for Dance Dance Revolution. Take a look at the lyrics and the music video as well. There are many theories going around the Internet of what it all might mean. A general consensus is that it’s about intense fans of a project or person — still up for debate. FIRST SINGLE CHEERLEADER 0u7 n0w (♡ヮ♡)https://t.co/8LoGDWQL3Y pic.twitter.com/uL4HUZvG4A — porter robinson (@porterrobinson) March 20, 2024 Regarding ‘Cheerleader‘, Porter says: “When I got back in the studio for ‘Cheerleader’, I asked: what would be something that people could love with zero context — just instantaneous, universal, explosive connection? ‘Cheerleader’ is my take on bottling that feeling.“ No word yet on the album’s release date. But, we’re off to a great start! Rejoice, scene kids! It looks like we may get a My Chemical Robinson era. Fred again.., Four Tet, & Skrillex Raise Money For New York City Soul Bus After Robbery
This week, the New York soul bus was robbed. Fred again.., Four Tet, and Skrillex have come to the rescue raising $12,600 to repair the bus. They famously played in it at Times Square last year before their massive MSG show. A GoFundMe has also been started for the NYC bus. The robbers took everything inside including DJ and sound equipment. Sadly they have a massive Riddim Bus event coming up where the bus is required. Over $20,000 has already been raised thanks to generous ravers. City Soul’s mission has always been to bring as many free street parties to the people of New York City as possible, while embodying diversity, inclusion, and equality. Since they started in 2020 as a grassroots passion project, City Soul has grown into a respected and beloved community force by showcasing the talents of local DJs and performers. City Soul Bus founder, Alan Gibson thanked the trio with this statement: “They really saved our bacon. Hyperpop Bliss Meets Anime Angst In Porter Robinson's New Single, "Cheerleader"
If we've learned anything about Porter Robinson over the years, it's that running the emotional gauntlet of his music is unavoidable. His albums are few and far between, but when they do come, we all willingly plunge into his bitcrushed universe of unfiltered nostalgia. As fans wait with bated breath for his long-awaited third LP, Robinson today released its first single, "Cheerleader." The anime-inspired dance track shimmers like a Tokyo cityscape, fusing bubbly hyperpop and indietronica to deliver an incandescent earworm that earns its place among his best. Its lyrics, an anguished confessional of unrequited devotion, pierce like cherry blossom thorns to mirror the fragility we all feel as a relationship's expiration date nears. Robinson delivers them with tortured ache atop a fizzy synthpunk beat, mourning affection's insatiable voids through harmonies drenched in longing. Robinson in early-March said his upcoming album is complete, but stopped short of revealing a title or release date. The record follows Nurture, which he released in the spring of 2021 seven years after his fan-favorite debut, Worlds. Listen to "Cheerleader" below. Justice unveils new single ‘Saturnine’
With the release of their hotly anticipated album Hyperdrama quickly approaching, Justice has unveiled the massive new single ‘Saturnine (with Miguel)’ and shared the album’s full track list and collaborator details ahead of its April 26th release via Ed Banger/Because Music. “We don’t think we’ve ever made anything that sounds remotely like this track before,” states the band of the song’s epic scope. “It started with Gaspard playing around with an E-mu synthesiser guitar sound, and he found the main riff. The rest came very quickly. We love Miguel’s voice when it’s raw. We wanted him to sound outrageously frontal, with no space around his voice. We felt confident we could make this work with a single mono take of his voice, and minimal processing. It also suited the theme of the song, that’s this sort of fear and loathing in Las Vegas sweaty, hallucinatory flow. Feeling well in feeling bad.” In conjunction with the new single release, the band have announced the first batch of US headline dates for their impending global Justice: Live tour, which will officially debut with a topline slot at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They have also just added a new date at Accor Arena in Paris, and were also recently announced as performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival in June, as well as headlining London’s Field Day Festival in August. The band have also just unveiled the track list for the impending album (find full details below), revealing an additional collaboration with Tame Impala, as well as songs with Thundercat, Miguel, The Flints, Rimon, and Connan Mockasin. The album will of course also include the recent smash singles ‘Incognito’, ‘One Night/All Night (with Tame Impala)’ and ‘Generator’, the latter of which was recently treated to a music video depicting a graphic sexual dalliance between two humanoid robots.
