  1. Anyma’s progressive perspective on human consciousness and technology is effortlessly encapsulated in his sophomore album, Genesys II. The influential producer, who co-founded the Afterlife imprint and produces music as one half of the duo Tale of Us, infuses thematic depth into his techno soundscapes. Continuing the futuristic narrative from his debut album, Genesys, Anyma’s cinematic style acts as a bold comment on where humanity is headed, and how our relationship with machines will progress over time. Eerie, dystopian melodies collide with techno kicks and haunting synths throughout the new album, which comprises two discs and 21 tracks. The first 10 songs are all original tunes from Anyma, including recent hit singles "Pictures of You" and "Higher Power." Disc two features 11 remixes by a slew of artists including Cassian, Adriatique and Eric Prydz. Genesys II begins with a striking collaboration with PARISI titled "Sacrifice," where distorted vocals build into a hair-raising techno breakdown to encapsulate Anyma's signature sound. The track sets the stage for a captivating run as the journey continues with "Now or Never," "The Light" and "Simulation," a trio of powerhouse tracks rooted in the themes of consciousness, coexistence and connection. Elsewhere in the album, "F.T.L.," Hear Me Now" and "Exodus" allow Anyma to showcase his singular production style, layering thumping techno beats and otherworldly synths with powerful vocals. Its first disc culminates in "After Love," a poignant track that explores the range of human emotion through chilling, dreamlike soundscapes. Anyma, who was named one of EDM.com's best artists of 2023, recently performed sold-out shows at Afterlife’s massive two-night run during Miami Music Week. He's now set to play a highly anticipated solo set at Coachella as well as a three-hour b2b performance alongside Eric Prydz on the festival's new Quasar Stage. You can listen to Genesys II below. 2. Contrary to local reports, a Tomorrowland festival has not yet been confirmed to take place in Thailand, Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen tells EDM.com. Citing Thai government spokesman Chai Wacharonke, numerous media outlets have reported that the organizers of the iconic, Belgium-based EDM festival have confirmed a new event in Thailand in 2026. However, while Tomorrowland's proprietors are currently exploring an expansion into the country, they're in the due diligence phase and have not yet solidified plans for a new festival. "In December the Tomorrowland team had the privilege of engaging in discussions with various parties and exploring potential locations for a Tomorrowland festival in Thailand," Wilmsen tells EDM.com. "Deeply touched by the warm support, we must clarify the recent speculation: nothing has been officially confirmed or signed at this time. The Tomorowland team is diligently conducting thorough research and exploration to assess the feasibility of hosting Tomorrowland in Thailand. There is still much to be investigated." Wacharonke also said Tomorrowland's unconfirmed inaugural festival in Thailand is the first of 10 consecutive editions, per The Japan Times. That claim is also unfounded at the time of this writing. "We continue to work towards bringing the magic of Tomorrowland to new destinations, but for now, all focus on the 20th anniversary of Tomorrowland in Belgium," Wilmsen added. She also noted that Tomorrowland is "very honored that the Thai authorities are eager to welcome us" as their team evaluates the viability of a new festival in the region. "Tomorrowland has a real interest in Thailand and is seriously exploring the possibility of a festival in the Kingdom," she said. "For now Tomorrowland explores the feasibility of such a project. At this stage, there is no confirmation yet on an actual festival taking place, this is what the feasibility study will make clear." Tomorrowland recently expanded to Colombia after announcing a new edition of their CORE offshoot in Medellín. That event is scheduled for May 11-12 at the Botanical Garden of Medellín. Meanwhile, 400,000 people are expected to attend the flagship Tomorrowland festival in Belgium, which will take place in Boom across two weekends: July 19-21 and July 26-28. This year's festival will celebrate the brand's 20th anniversary with a lineup featuring Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Hardwell and many more electronic dance music superstars.

  4. Desthen‘s “The New Path” is a great example of how well they can create magical soundscapes. Out on Deep Tales. The music on “The New Path” takes the viewer into a world of ethereal soundscapes and haunting melodies. This shows how good Desthen is at making things. It has a lot of complex layers and emotional rhythms that make it sound like deep, reflective electronic music. Each part is carefully made into the whole. All of them weave a tapestry of sound that rises and falls, taking the listener on a trip of self-discovery and inner exploration. “The New Path” is even darker and driven in Erly Tepshi‘s remix, as if the original track wasn’t interesting enough. In Tepshi’s version, the haunting tune is mixed with heavy, hypnotic beats. All of the sounds work together to make an interesting difference that can be felt in the deepest parts of melodic techno. This new version gives it a sense of urgency and power. Both versions are out now via Deep Tales. The post Desthen presents ‘The New Path’ on Deep Tales appeared first on The Groove Cartel.
  5. Renowned electronic music artist Reinier Zonneveld is set to unveil a revolutionary addition to his live performances at his own upcoming festival, taking place at the iconic location of the Spaarnwoude on August 17th. Zonneveld will be the first artist ever to integrate his specially-crafted AI model, R², into a live electronic music set, promising an experience like no other for electronic music enthusiasts worldwide. Over the past few years, Zonneveld has fine-tuned R², a cutting-edge AI model that transcends conventional boundaries in music production and performance. The groundbreaking R² AI was trained on over 2000 hours of Reinier Zonneveld’s original music and recordings from more than 1000 live shows spanning the artist’s illustrious 15-year career. With a specific focus on capturing Zonneveld‘s celebrated improvisational style, R² is a unique and innovative partner in live music performance, setting new standards by seamlessly composing real-time tracks based on Zonneveld‘s extensive repertoire. In addition to the R² mainstage, there will be seven other stages at the festival hosted by music institutions, labels, and clubs pivotal in Reinier Zonneveld’s history. The Beginning will be featured to pay homage to the illegal rave movement that gave birth to Reinier Zonneveld’s career, while De Marktkantine, the extinct nightlife institution from Amsterdam, is set to revive the energy felt during the many infamous Reinier Zonneveld all-nighters. STOOR, the pure improvisation audio-visual experience created by techno icon Speedy J, where image and sound become a symbiosis of unbridled electronics, will see Karl Klomp directing the stage design, lighting, and a team of video artists. The Unreal concept, straight from Bootshaus in Cologne, will bring a darker and heavier rave sound to those who want to enjoy harder techno at R², while the Amnesia’s Pyramid concept, where Zonneveld had his first-ever Ibiza residency in 2023, brings the Ibiza vibe to Dutch grounds. Kompass Klub will make its way from Belgium to showcase its intense, passionate atmosphere, and Reinier’s own Filth On Acid imprint is set to showcase some of the label boss’ personal favorite artists. “I’ve always been excited about pushing boundaries and integrating technology in my performances. 7. EM has low-key been killing it on YouTube with his fire mixtapes, but his new remix of ARTBAT‘s “Coming Home” is truly next level. The kid took the original progressive house banger and flipped it into this gorgeous, deeply emotional deep house journey. We’re talking Lane 8 or This Never Happened levels of atmospheric vibes. It’s all warm, lush melodies and moody atmospherics, but the genius move was keeping John Martin’s iconic vocals pretty much intact. That’s the key to a dope remix – reimagining the original without losing the special sauce that made it resonate so hard in the first place. Speaking of special sauce, EM’s production is absolutely flawless on this one. Fat layered textures, huge cinematic breakdowns that give you chills, and impeccable rhythms that just grip you and never let go. The way he builds tension in that breakdown with the atmospheric vocal chops is a goddamn masterclass. EM’s whole sound is straight out of the melodic/emotive house realm à la Icarus, Yotto, Duskus and that crowd. Lush, melancholic chord progressions shot through with rays of euphoric beauty. He captures that bitter-sweet vibe perfectly. As he gears up for a huge 2024 campaign focused on his own original productions, remixes like this have me incredibly hyped for what he’s got coming. You can hear his artistic vision shining through crystal clear. If you’re into deep, melodic house at all, this “Coming Home” remix is an absolute must-listen. The way EM reimagined and flipped the vibe while still honoring the essence of the track is seriously impressive stuff. He’s even putting it out as a free download too! Real underground talents like EM are exactly why the melodic house scene stays so fresh and captivating. With A-plus remixes like this one, it’s only a matter of time before he blows up in a major way. Don’t sleep, get hip now before he’s playing massive stages. You just came out from an epic b2b with long time collaborator Afrojack, how are we feeling? “It was really nice, it’s always nice to play back in California. My first time here was in 2011 at Escape Halloween, so it always feels great to come back.” You’ve been very busy releasing new music, just today, you had a major track come out, can you talk more about it? “Yes, ‘Electricity’! I mean, Fast Boy, the brothers are extremely talented and they have amazing vocals. We felt like we worked great together. I met them in Thailand on a writing trip and the rest is history. I do want to write and produce more with them in the future because it really clicked.” We can’t wait to hear ‘Electricity’ over and over again this festival season. What are your plans for this upcoming season? “All over… I have shows in the US, Europe and Asia. It is really special to visit these places during the summer and I love playing during this time. I’m also working on my next single release in the next two months and I think it’s a really good one for the summer” Photo credit: Frits Van den Brink That’s exciting! The love is still there, that’s what continues to inspire me as I work with so many different artists.” That’s beautiful! Who are you most excited to work with in the near future? “Oh I’m super excited to work with W&W for our b2b in France. He also is the co-founder of Syne Research, a brand that celebrates the visual side of the listening experience through digital album artwork displays. Late last year, the Excision and Immanent VJ team approached COUR to handle the creative and execution for five songs of Excision's newest tour, "Nexus," along with Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Elevating the tracks "Bass to the Dome," "1 on 1," "Death Wish," "End of the World" and "Kern Happy Die," COUR sought to create five distinct worlds that would seamlessly merge with the music. Aware of Excision's reputation for creating electrifying performances, the team knew they had to deliver a spectacle that would not only enhance the music, but also leave the audiences wanting more. The COUR team began work in December 2023, working with Excision and creative/video director Matt Medwid to develop the visuals for five tracks during the performance. Excision and the Immanent team were entirely responsible for the creative concept behind the Ultra Music Festival set and wanted the performance to be visually striking and appear as if the visuals were popping out of the screen towards the audience. Alongside Matt, COUR drew inspiration from intense twists on nature, the pulsating beat of internet culture and the quirky realms of computer futurism to breathe life into the performance. We came up with unique concepts to accompany each of the five songs. During "1 on 1," the team wanted to create a Tron- and Tetris-inspired architectural wonderland for Excision that would match the perspective of the stage and extend it. It was a pretty special moment. Lasers were dancing across a wireframe landscape, revealing intricate geometric shapes against the night sky. It was architecturally-led but felt like a fast, rhythm-based cube-crusher game. Excision's Visuals for "1 on 1" at Ultra Music Festival 2024 (0:30) Matching the futuristic bass beats of "Bass to the Dome," Excision wanted to bring the performance to life with pulsating cubes of lasers rolling and crashing into the earth while unleashing a barrage of pyrotechnics, shockwaves and digital signals. During the track, the sides of the cube begin to fall away, revealing a futuristic bass speaker inside. Excision's Visuals for "Bass to the Dome" at Ultra Music Festival 2024 (0:30) As the show progressed and the energy of the set increased, the team wanted to create an exciting moment for the audience that would match the energy of "Kern Happy Die." During the track, a laser is emitted from the center of an LED wall, and a reactor core is activated in the centre of the screen. As the core began to fire up, a bright green backlight slowly began to fill the screen, illuminating a vast array of people standing on a multi-story scaffolding structure. As the song builds, the people on the scaffolding begin to convulse and move frantically. Excision's Visuals for "Kern Happy Die" at Ultra Music Festival 2024 (0:30) Another concept the team developed was a futuristic computer interface that visualized a cybernetic overlord’s voice through a stunning 3D lattice structure during "End of the World." The computer interface was a thin glass with intricate HUD visuals displaying data. As the song darkens, the overlord leaves the computer interface, breaking the frame and extruding towards the audience. This moment fully demonstrated Excision’s unparalleled creativity and technical prowess as artists at the top of their game. Excision's Visuals for "End of the World" at Ultra Music Festival 2024 (0:30) Alongside Matt and Excision, COUR transformed the stage into a rocky, hieroglyphic-filled cave for "Death Wish." An ominous "X" emerged from the darkness, accompanied by bursts of fire, lasers and the chilling proclamation "Time to Grant Your Death Wish" splashed across large screens, which engulfed the audience in an unforgettable sensory experience. Excision's Visuals for "Death Wish" at Ultra Music Festival 2024 (0:30) Though COUR specializes in video content, they pride themselves in being a multidisciplinary creative house handling things from creative direction to design to content. The Ultra Music Festival performance was a testament to Excision’s raw talent and creativity to deliver one of the most forward-thinking and innovative live music experiences.
  17. You know, after covering the electronic music beat for over a decade at The Groove Cartel, you’d think I’d be numb to surprises by now. But artists like Anyma always find a way to keep things fresh and fascinating. His debut album “Genesys” was a genuine jaw-dropper when it dropped last year. The way Matteo Milleri seamlessly wove those lush, dreamy soundscapes with cutting-edge visuals and thematic depth – felt like a true evolution for the genre. A new frontier of immersive, almost synaesthetic artistry. So when whispers started circulating about a “Genesys Part II” in the works, you’d better believe my ears perked up. At first, I’ll admit, part of me worried it might be a hastily thrown-together attempt to milk the momentum from the original’s success. Boy, was I wrong? Leave it to the mastermind behind Anyma to conceive something sleek and subversive. Rather than slapping together a few bonus tracks, Milleri is going the ambitious remix album route for Part II. An inspired move, if you ask me. Even better is that he will include some brand-new songs. You can expect the long-awaited Now Or Never as well as a collaboration with PARISI. The Genesys Part II is a hybrid album with new songs, already released ones, and new remixes. The full tracklist of Anyma Genesys Part II album includes: Sacrifice with PARISI Now Or Never The Light Simulation with Chris Avantgarde Pictures Of You Higher Power with Argy, Magnus F.T.L. Hear Me Now with Rebuke, Karin Park Exodus with Adam Sellouk After Love feat. Delilah Montagu Eternity (Massano Remix) Pictures Of You (Cassian Remix) The Sign (Kevin de Vries Remix) Welcome to the Opera (Adriatique Remix) Syren (Adam Sellouk Remix) Consciousness (Eric Prydz Remix) Save Me (Kolsch Remix) Syren (Amelie Lens Remix) Welcome to the Opera (Kobosil 44 Symbiont Mix) Explore Your Future (Daniel Avery Remix) Think about it – “Genesys” was such a meticulously crafted audio-visual experience. Allowing fresh production talents to dissect and rebuild those lush atmospheres opens up endless new realms to explore. It’s like witnessing the work strain through a kaleidoscope of aural alchemy. We’ve already had whiffs of the wizardry in store, with tantalizing remixes like Massano’s techno-big room take on the haunting album opener “Eternity.” Judging by the snippets making the rounds, this isn’t just going to be a run-of-the-mill remix package either. No, Milleri seems dead-set on curating an entirely new headtrip for fans. An alternative dreamscape where the “Genesys” mythologies get bent, spliced, and recontextualized through a lens of fresh perspectives. I’m ready to plunge into those depths. The masterminds dropped a key detail too during Anyma’s recent Buenos Aires gig: “Genesys Part II” is locked in for March 29th, hot on the heels of the Afterlife label’s Miami Music Week festivities. Savvy timing to catch that post-festival momentum. As a veteran spectator of too many remix album cycles to count, let me say – this rollout has me genuinely hyped like it’s year one on the job again. Anyma’s penchant for transcendent, boundary-demolishing art makes this an essential experience for any discerning electronic explorer. Part two of an already deeply immersive journey? Updates from the live show trail? You know I’ll be downing triple espressos to stay wired for every new Anyma transmission over the next few weeks. This is shaping up to be one for the books. 18. Reinier Zonneveld Debuts His AI Live Music Project At Brand New R² Festival The World’s first Live AI back2back set between Human and Computer R² Festival will take place at the legendary Spaarnwoude site and will feature stage hostings by Kompass, Amnesia Pyramid, De Marktkantine, STOOR, The Beginning, Filth On Acid, and Unreal, and will see the debut of Reinier Zonneveld’s R² AI live music project In a dimly-lit studio tucked away in the Dutch capital, the familiar thump of a kickdrum reverberates, joined by an atmospheric swell of synthesized textures. But something is different this time. The sounds aren’t being crafted by human hands, but rather an artificial intelligence that has spent years studying the creative mind of one of techno’s premier live artists – Reinier Zonneveld. As I watch Zonneveld nod his head to the improvised groove laid down by the AI system he has developed, dubbed R² (R-Squared), it’s clear we are glimpsing the future. “This is just the beginning,” he tells with the grin of an pioneer. “The possibilities of where we can take this are endless.” Indeed, the potentials of AI integration in live electronic music performance will soon be put to the ultimate test. On August 17th, Zonneveld will make history as the first artist to bring an AI co-performer on stage at his very own Zonneveld R² Festival in the picturesque grounds of Spaarnwoude, just outside Amsterdam. In front of a global audience of techno fans, Zonneveld will link up and go back-to-back for the first time ever with R² – an AI project he has spent over two years developing alongside technologists and musicians. Trained on a staggering 2000+ hours of Zonneveld’s original tracks, live recordings, studio sessions, and more, R² has effectively learned to mimic and build upon the acclaimed artist’s free-flowing, hypnotic style. “For me, improvisation and creating in the moment has always been at the core of what I do,” explains Zonneveld. “So with R², the biggest challenge was trying to capture that organic, human element with artificial intelligence. How do you get a computer to understand musical emotion and energy?” The answer, it seems, lies in R²’s unique design. Instead of merely generating ambient backgrounds or basic rhythmic phrases, the AI is capable of constructing full, evolving song ideas based on the musical patterns, tones, and genres it has studied from Zonneveld’s catalog. Using deep learning networks, it can dynamically adapt these compositions in real-time based on parameters like crowd energy levels or changes instigated by Zonneveld himself on his control rig. For the festival’s historic centerpiece performance, Zonneveld and his AI counterpart will engage in an improvised musical call-and-response – complementing each other’s outputs and pushing the sound into uncharted territories. “R² won’t just be accompanying me up there,” says Zonneveld. “We’ll be collaborating… becoming creative partners in a spontaneous dialogue that neither of us can fully predict.” While the R² integration is unquestionably the main draw, the festival setting itself also promises to be a sui generis experience, paying tribute to the diverse influences and scenes that have shaped Zonneveld’s career over the past 15 years. Seven additional stages will each be hosted by a renowned music institution, label, or collective – from illicit rave pioneers to the famed De Marktkantine club and Speedy J’s avant-garde STOOR show. As anticipation builds in techno circles worldwide, it’s clear this is not just a regular music festival. It’s the potential birth of a new era – one where human and artificial intelligence might finally converge to craft an entirely new artform before our eyes and ears. The possibilities, as Zonneveld said, are endless. “I don’t think there’s any going back after this,” he tells. A warm smile creeps across his face as a new swell of improvised melodies emanate from the R² AI system. “For better or worse, we’re opening a door that’ll never be closed again.” The post Reinier Zonneveld Launches New R² Festival and AI live show appeared first on The Groove Cartel.
  19. After returning to Ultra Music Festival for the first time in over a decade, Calvin Harris has shared his full Sunday closing performance. Anyone who's seen the hit-maker headline a festival knows that beneath his shimmering synths and catchy hooks lies a deeper emotional resonance. That came out in droves at Ultra, where his crescendoing finale tied a bow on a weekend of carefree abandon in Miami. In a festival flush with surreal moments, Harris' spectacular Mainstage performance was an undeniable highlight. His first Ultra set in 11 years was a masterclass in crowd-control, turning fans into puddles at times with classics like "Feel So Close" and inspiring techno-fueled purges at others, like when he closed with Hardwell's soaring remix of "Miracle." 22. A new report, which arose from research by the Musicians' Union and the charitable organization Help Musicians, shines a light on the plight of women working in the music industry in 2024. Over 2,500 female musicians were surveyed in the "Women Musicians Insight Report," which suggests that work-related abuse and financial disparities significantly impede the career advancement of women in the music industry. The study found that half of women have experienced gender discrimination and a third have been sexually harassed. Another finding in the study correlated women's age and visibility in the music scene. While 47% of musicians ages 16-55 were women, they comprised only 26% of those over the age of 55. Age discrimination was found to occur much more commonly in female musicians versus males. "The findings of the latest Census report show there’s still so much work to be done to make sure that working as a musician is equitable for all," said Sarah Woods, the Chief Executive of Help Musicians and Music Minds Matter. "We hope these insights will encourage the industry to continue collaborating to reduce gender-based barriers and ensure gender equity in every part of music." “It’s alarming to witness the persistence of gender disparities highlighted by the UK Musicians’ Census, where discrimination, harassment and unequal pay remain prevalent issues faced by women musicians, demanding urgent action," added Nadia Khan, founder of the nonprofit Women In CTRL. "This pivotal moment presents a unique opportunity for change ahead of the next musicians’ census. It’s vital that the industry makes genuine commitments and takes decisive actions to prevent the recurrence of the same data." You can read the full "Women Musicians Insight Report" here.
  23. Vampire Weekend dropped “Mary Boone,” the last pre-release track from Only God Was Above Us, set to launch on April 5th under Columbia Records. Crafted by Ezra Koenig, it includes a snippet of the renowned drum loop from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me).” Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid and Koenig, with rich orchestral arrangements by Will Canzoneri, Koenig, and Rechtshaid, the track—titled after a prominent NYC art figure from the ’80s—showcases an expansive operatic choir complementing Koenig’s subtly sweet vocals. The lyrics touch on Tadao Ando churches, Natarajas, hex signs, and whirling Dervishes, crafting a diverse sonic and lyrical landscape as the narrator seeks entry into the realm of New York’s art scene (or maybe something greater): Freshly painted in white, new to the area, you weren’t hiring, but I was seeking job opportunities. “Mary Boone” is accompanied by an official visualizer which features a rapper who’s never released an album, Despot, driving from New Jersey to Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel. Watch it here. To date, Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio have released four songs from Only God Was Above Us: “Gen-X Cops,” “Capricorn,” “Classical” and now “Mary Boone”—evincing a diverse array of sounds and narratives, yet only revealing less than half of the album’s staggering range and depth. Only God Was Above Us will be available across digital platforms as well as on vinyl and CD. Pre-orders can be placed at https://vampireweekend.store/ In addition to Mary Boone’s news, Vampire Weekend has revealed a nine-date live show series starting at Dublin’s 3Arena on November 29th. 25. The 2024 edition of Ultra Music Festival in Miami was truly one to remember. As a matter of fact, this year’s iteration had not only unreal performances – as per usual – but an atmosphere like none other thanks to the cancellation of the end of Day 1 due to severe weather. For those of you who didn’t know, Ultra had to close its gates early on Friday because of the heavy rain and winds that surged the Bayfront Park area. Moreover, Day 2 was delayed by a few hours in order to clean up the mess that mother nature left. However, when fans regained access to the site, the energy was higher than ever, and Ultra 2024’s comeback story began. The festival’s crew was able to accommodate most of the missed sets on Saturday and Sunday. Hardwell and Amelie Lens, some of the most anticipated sets from Friday, performed on Saturday. The festival extended its curfew, and the artists scheduled for Saturday amended their set times to make everyone happy. Overall, the management handled the situation commendably and fans experienced an unforgettable Ultra Miami 2024. A few days have pasted since the event, and Ultra has released its traditional ‘Thank You’ video. To see these amazing images despite the setbacks is truly amazing. Here is what Ultra Music Festival had to say on the events that transpired: ‘#ULTRA2024 was one for the books. There were so many magical memories that were made and we’ve done nothing but relive them over and over again in our minds. Through the rain, the sun, and everything else Miami threw our way, this year’s Ultra was nothing without all of you who stuck it out with us through the weekend. We hope to see you all next year for #ULTRA25.’ Tickets for Ultra 2025 in Miami are officially on sale now. Please visit the official website for more information. Stay tuned for more news!
