After Coachella experienced historically low ticket sales, there is now data circulating showing that vacation rental bookings are down from last year. The data comes from AirDNA, which tracks short-term rental data from Vrbo and Airbnb, and shows that bookings for both weekends of the Indio festival are down from last year. According to AirDNA, three months ago, bookings were down by 26% compared to the same time last year. While that gap has since narrowed, it’s still not where one would expect; AirDNA also reported that three weeks out from the festival, 48,000 nights had been booked, down 12% from the same time in 2023. ‘If this year follows a similar booking trajectory as last year, a large percentage of bookings could happen in these last remaining days. However, it remains to be seen if demand for this year’s Coachella will catch up to last year or fall short.’ AirDNA spokesperson Chloé Garlaschi This news follows the slowest ticket sales the festival has seen in years. Historically, Coachella tickets have sold out in within just a few hours, after stressed-out fans endured long virtual ticket queues. If you’re headed to the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio over the next few days, you’ll want to study these schedules closely to map out your ideal weekend. As always, there are some brutal set conflicts to grapple with across the various outdoor stages and tents. Let’s break down some of the biggest highlights and challenges: Friday, April 12th The opening night kicks off with rising Mexican star Peso Pluma hitting the main Coachella stage at 9:05 pm, leading into the weekend’s first headliner Lana Del Rey at 11:20 pm. But you’ll have to choose between several can’t-miss acts in the preceding hours, including French indie dance icons Justice, British alt-rockers Deftones, and Australian singer-songwriter Faye Webster (whose sets all partially overlap). Hedex is set to headline a charity rave in the UK to pay tribute to his late friend, Dan Cracknell, who tragically died last year. Cracknell passed away from a rare and aggressive brain tumor, according to Rainbows, a Loughborough hospice caring for babies, children and young people facing severe and terminal illnesses. The facility provided him and his family with care and support in the final days of his life. One of Cracknell's visitors at the time was Hedex, a rising superstar in the world of drum & bass music. While that EDM serotonin rush still remains, the industry looks different over a decade later, when its consumers often prioritize the intimate, walk-on-air euphoria of a dark warehouse rave over the regurgitated frills of a major festival. From a cultural standpoint, the chasm between those two formats keeps growing—but for its artists, the road between the two is paved with uncertainty and hardship. So where exactly do DJs fit into this industry in flux? And what challenges do they face? Without the peace of mind that comes with blitzkrieg marketing offensives and veteran negotiators like CAA's Alex Becket, most must navigate choppy waters solo as inflationary pressures hike the rising costs of touring to unsustainable levels. For those artists, it's a lonely masterclass in DIY hustle. Becket is the powerhouse agent behind—among many others—RÜFÜS DU SOL, Bedouin, Monolink and G Jones, the lattermost of whom was recently named by EDM.com as one of the world's best electronic music producers. He has been with CAA for nearly two decades and became the firm's first electronic music agent in 2012 before nabbing a spot in Billboard’s venerable "Dance Power Players" list in 2019. It's no secret that leading agencies like CAA wield industry tentacles to curate prime festival real estate as a means to nurture the eggs of their mainstream golden geese. In other words, the stages of major festivals are the ultimate slingshots for new albums. Meanwhile, their electronic artists—as well as those repped by independent bookers across the nation—are left tasting the dust of their hip-hop and pop contemporaries. But if there's any silver lining, blue-chip agencies and festivals today are acutely focused on unearthing and booking EDM talent, according to Becket, who tells us he expects to see more dance acts on big stages in the near future. Now, after a year teeming with unforgettable EDM moments, Coachella is introducing a brand-new stage to serve as the festival's de facto epicenter of rave music. Ahead of Coachella's return this weekend, we caught up with Becket to discuss Quasar as well as the evolving relationship between major festivals and the electronic dance music community. EDM.com: After Coachella made the decision to blend Sahara's lineups with more mainstream artists, it seems Quasar is the festival's new epicenter of electronic dance music. Why now? Alex Becket: The way "underground" house and techno music has become so popular in recent years, and arguably is now the mainstream dance music of the day, the traditional home at the festival for that sound, the Yuma Tent, has become too small to service all the demand. It’s a great sign for the health of our industry that the festival needs a stage like Quasar for this growing audience. EDM.com: Take us behind the scenes of your discussions with your artists about Quasar. What about the new stage was so appealing to them? Alex Becket: Coachella has been such a pioneer for dance music over the years and they’ve done it again with Quasar. The opportunity to play an extended three-hour set is unheard of amongst multi-genre contemporary festivals and represents the core culture around DJs and raves. It's exciting for these artists to have the freedom to take fans on a journey without the constraints of 60–75-minute sets that are typical at the festival. Can you elaborate on the strategic advantages—beyond pure popularity—that booking EDM artists brings to major festivals? Alex Becket: Coachella has been booking electronic artists for decades but it's true this year feels particularly dance-heavy. For whatever reason, I think other genres are down right now and electronic is filling up a lot of that void on festival lineups. Dance music appeals to a broader audience than a lot of other genres, and that drives mass appeal. EDM.com: What role, if any, has technological advancements in live production and stage setups played in making EDM acts more appealing for festival organizers? And to what extent does this focus on live spectacle factor into a festival's decision-making when executing lineups? Alex Becket: Festivals want big shows and big moments so it factors in a lot for them. Big production was an essential part of the "EDM" boom in the early 2010s and has always been a big part of the EDM experience. "Underground" shows with no production emerged in response to that, and now you’re seeing the pendulum swing back the other way in many cases with underground artists building big shows. In this way we're seeing big productions with better music and it's a winning combo. EDM.com: Are there any particular up-and-coming artists or sub-genres that you anticipate will gain even more traction in the festival circuit in the near future? Alex Becket: Hard techno is definitely having a moment with younger generations, and we're having a ton of success at CAA in the minimal tech and minimal deep tech space. Our new colleague Julian Teixeira has a lot of the best up-and-coming artists in this world like Chris Stussy, Dennis Cruz and Ben Sterling. RÜFÜS DU SOL, who will perform at the debut of Coachella's new Quasar stage, are part of Alex Becket's roster at CAA.Michael Drummond EDM.com: What challenges or obstacles do EDM artists face when it comes to securing prominent slots at major festivals dominated by more traditional rock, hip-hop and pop acts? Alex Becket: DJs and electronic artists have been sharing the top lines at festivals with rock, hip-hop and pop acts for years. In the past, relatively few dance artists headlined hard tickets and their value was closely tied to VIP sales (still does) which is harder to quantify and not public information. That’s a different metric that made direct comparisons difficult and worked against dance artists for prominent slots or billing, but many dance artists live in the hard ticket world now and it’s not much of a thing. EDM.com: How do you see the festival landscape evolving in the next five to 10 years when it comes to the representation of EDM and other electronic music genres on major lineups? Alex Becket: The sky's the limit! One of dance music's greatest strengths is diversity, both of the audience and the music. I expect to see more dance acts on big and small stages alike, and different music thrives in different settings. I love the variety of experiences Coachella offers in this way. You can go see an insane visual spectacular like Anyma at the Sahara Tent, then pop over to the Do LaB for the best dance party at the festival, then head to an immersive experience with RÜFÜS DU SOL (DJ SET) at Quasar, then end your night with Adriatique at the Yuma for a true nightclub experience in the middle of a festival. Denmark’s Roskilde Festival completes the lineup for this year’s festival with 53 new music acts, including 21 Savage, PinkPantheress, Amaarae, Barry Can’t Swim, Belle & Sebastian, Fridayy, Gloria Groove, Tinashe, and Young Nudy. The non-profit festival also adds many new names to its Art and Activism programme. From June 29 to July 6, close to 200 acts will play Roskilde Festival, Northern Europe’s biggest music festival. Today, the festival presents its full lineup, with SZA, Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, Foo Fighters, and Skrillex among its previously revealed headliners. Today’s announcement features 53 new music acts, including 21 Savage. In January, the Atlanta rapper climbed to the top of Billboard 200 for the fourth time with the album American Dream, proving once again that he is among the biggest artists in the world right now. The show at Roskilde Festival will be 21 Savage’s first in Denmark. PinkPantheress, Amaarae, Belle & Sebastian, Tinashe and Young Nudy are also new additions, as well as Denmark’s very own Erika de Casier, who will be playing her biggest show yet on home soil. Furthermore, festival participants will get the chance to experience Kakuma Sound, a group based in one of the world’s biggest refugee camps, playing in Europe for the first time. GETTING TO KNOW Lee Ptolemy Introduce yourself and your project I am a seasoned musician with a passion for electronic sounds who’s been crafting music for over 15 years. However, it was only three years ago that I delved into the realm of electronic music production which would ultimately shape my artistic direction. My releases have often been influenced by existing tracks, offering my own unique interpretation and style. Since then, I’ve made a bold decision to redefine my sound, shifting my focus towards original compositions. My upcoming album marks a significant departure from any previous work, showcasing a fusion of classic deep house vibes with a touch of the exotic. It draws inspiration from oriental instruments, intricate percussions, and carefully crafted compositions, promising to be a mature and introspective exploration of sound. Explain what musical genre fits you best Deep house, Organic house. Were you connected with music from a young age and did anyone inspire you? I am from Rotterdam, Netherlands where house music is rooted. At a young age I was inspired by Euromasters and DJ Paul Elstak (Midtown records), and after primary school I would go to the record shop Midtown to browse through the vinyls. What kickstarted your music career? I started producing music at a young age, around 20 years ago. I was mostly making Hip-hop beats and somewhat electronic music like drum n bass and hardstyle. I never really published much around those times. I started to pick up DJ-ing as a hobby a few years ago, but I took a break because I did not have the space nor time. When I did stand back behind the turntables I was getting ideas for producing again in no time. After my first production I had a lot of nice feedback, and also Shazams from locations all over the world. When I realised I was getting recognition from places I never even visited, this gave me a great boost to start creating more. Tell us more about your sound and how it’s evolved over time I feel that before I was making tracks, I was more focused on making covers and remixes. Now I am trying to create my own compositions, combined with samples that guide me or inspire me. For me, the biggest challenge was making an album. Releasing an album required a new skill for me, and accepting that a track is a moment, and not a continuous process. It is never properly finished in my head, but the release is planned now. Any words you want to share to encourage other artists or producers? Try to produce without ego. I saw caring too much about the public’s opinion killed the experimental part which music really needs. In order for music to evolve, your track might not necessarily be a success, but it might inspire another artists again, which in some way you might get back again. Just throw it out there. How do you nurture your industry relationships? I must say poorly at this point. I am at the stage where I am building up relationships and networking still, but I promise whoever is reading this, I do maintain them properly ☺ Is there anyone you’d like to thank that’s been crucial to your journey? I think everybody close to me has been of great support. I do not talk much about the music and don’t advertise it much. For me it’s just a moment for myself. What was your first music memory and how did it fuel your fire? When I was a small child I used to really enjoy Michael Jackson and the long videoclips he had with stories in it. I think being very young the visuals came on number 1, and the music second. But I do feel as this developed my interests in music more. Tell us more about your plans for the future While I can’t predict the exact direction my career will take, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and am committed to pursuing my passion for music with determination and enthusiasm. Firstly, there’s this project that’s all about exploring lively and rhythmic styles like ancestral house, riddim, and Afro beats. It’s about tapping into cultural traditions and creating music that gets people moving with infectious rhythms and vibrant energy. Then, there’s another project that’s a bit darker and harder. These tracks are still in the works, and I’m not sure if I want to release them yet. They’re more experimental and moody, showing a different side of my creativity. I’m facing a bit of a dilemma because, on one hand, I want to stay true to my artistic instincts and release music that I’m passionate about. But on the other hand, I’m thinking about my audience and whether these new tracks might surprise or even disappoint them. It’s a common struggle for artists like me, balancing creativity with what our fans expect. I want to keep things fresh and exciting, but I also want to make sure my audience stays engaged and happy with what I’m putting out there. In the end, whatever decision I make, it’s important for me to stay true to myself as an artist and keep pushing the boundaries of my creativity. Any worldly advice you’d like to share? Stay humble and open-minded. There’s always something new to learn and room to grow as an artist, so approach every opportunity with curiosity and a willingness to learn. The road to success in the music industry can be challenging and unpredictable, but perseverance and passion will ultimately lead you to where you want to be.
