  3. It's springtime in the Coachella Valley, which means just about everywhere you look there's a pool party brimming with 20-somethings sipping on mojitos while deep house echoes from the speakers to the desert sky. Bearing that in mind, when Goldenvoice announced another Coachella-centered pool event, the four-day spectacle seemed excessive for the saturated market. Even with a roster of top-tier electronic tastemakers, the Goldenvoice Surf Club had to elevate and execute its amenities to stand out from the crowd. And they did. Having been gifted the honor of hosting their soiree at the infrequently-used Palm Springs Surf Club, Goldenvoice took full advantage of the built-in infrastructure to create a one-of-a-kind experience for dance music lovers. Keiki-Lani Knudsen Once a former water park, the grounds at the Palm Springs Surf Club included accommodations not found at your run-of-the-mill desert pool party. From water slides, a meandering lazy river, a swimming pool and a massive surfing wave pool, these accessible water play areas added a level of amusement that blended perfectly with the house music blasting from the amplifiers. Keiki-Lani Knudsen Promoters also included an early morning wellness package for those wanting a more relaxing start to their day. Sound baths, yoga, HIIT training and guided meditation were just a few of the health-focused activities available to guests. View the original article to see embedded media. As for daily programming, the talent performing across both weekends included a who's who of stars from across the electronic music spectrum. Spread across two distinct stages, the main stage was situated alongside a picturesque grassy amphitheater, while the Beatport Next stage featured rising acts in an indoor setting. Notable performances from all four days include Mary Droppinz, Barry Can't Swim, Bicep, Mall Grab b2b Skin On Skin, Skream and Juliet Mendoza. Keiki-Lani Knudsen In the end, Goldenvoice prevailed as it took full advantage of the amenities provided by the Palm Springs Surf Club. The unique setting allowed for a more jovial tone to take place amongst the many aquatic features scattered throughout the property. The Goldenvoice Surf Club was a true adult playground, and we're hoping for a return to Coachella 2025 and beyond. You can find out more about the series here. 8. The steady stream of new Marshmello music isn't over. The masked, chart-topping producer has stormed into 2024 with several bass-forward singles, staying especially attuned to his bass music roots in recent times. Based on his latest comments on social media, Marshmello is telling fans there's certainly more where that came from. "Riddim ep coming very soon btw," he posted on X. "Maybe next week if you ask nicely." Riddim ep coming very soon btw…maybe next week if you ask nicely — marshmello (@marshmello) April 18, 2024 The news follows Mello's recent release of Mellodeath Tapes Vol. 1, the producer's collaborative EP with SVDDEN DEATH. Despite the ominous nature of their music, the two have been sharing seemingly swell times on the road with high-profile pop-up sets in Minnesota at the famed Mall of America and in Chicago atop the local landmark restaurant, The Wieners Circle. Marshmello's upcoming riddim EP may be his next focus, but there's no shortage of new tunes he's been workshopping. 9. After a tumultuous year marred by a battle with cancer, Michael Bibi's return to the stage at Coachella 2024 was a celebration of life, music and resilience. The influential DJ and house music producer, who in 2023 faced a rare form of brain and spinal cancer, graced the stage with a set that encapsulated more than just his raw skills on the decks. It was a profound emotional journey shared with thousands of adoring fans. Nearly a year ago, Bibi received a daunting prognosis, casting shadows over his career. However, his surprise performance in Ibiza during a break in his cancer treatment hinted at his unwavering spirit. By December he shared heartening news of his remission, a sign of hope not just for him, but also his fans worldwide. Before taking to Coachella's new Quasar stage, he reflected, "One year ago I was given a 30% chance of survival, today I'm packing to perform at Coachella... Never give up on your hopes or dreams." Bibi was joined onstage by his mother, who was simultaneously experiencing her first music festival with her son. The emotional weight of the performance was palpable, Bibi said. "It was emotional, it was intense—there was happiness, there was some sadness," he told BBC's Newsbeat. "And there was just a huge range of emotions coming through." View the original article to see embedded media. Bibi’s journey to Coachella was his first long-distance travel since his treatment, signifying a major step in his recovery. "That was a big step in itself, just getting on a plane and coming to the US," he added. "And then adding on top of that, doing my first show and coming to a festival, it was a lot." "But it actually gives you a sense of purpose again, moving and coming back out into reality and seeing people. Because I've been kind of sheltering a lot, because of the treatments, I've had to kind of isolate myself. So getting back out into the world and connecting with human beings is a good feeling." 11. DJ Snake threw a curveball at this year's Coachella, striking a chord with festival-goers by bringing out hip-hop icon 50 Cent in a groundbreaking set that bridged electronic dance music with old-school hip-hop. Euphoria swept through the crowd as 50 Cent performed 2003's "In Da Club," a track that has become synonymous with hip-hop excellence over its 20-year reign. The energy surged as they followed up with "P.I.M.P," turning the festival atmosphere at the Sahara tent into a block party of epic proportions. Elsewhere on the festival's grounds, Snake popped up to surprise fans with a dedicated hip-hop set at the Do LaB stage. He certainly made the most of his two weekends at the Indio-based festival as his high-energy Weekend 2 set followed up a star-studded outing the weekend prior, which saw the "Turn Down For What" producer bringing special guests Peso Pluma, Robin S. and Kodak Black to the stage. 12. In 2024, when the electronic dance music scene is dominated by technologically advanced visuals, Excision stands tall as one of its foremost innovators. Following the viral sensation of his 3D visuals, which seemingly leap out of the screen, the anticipation for his "Nexus" tour surged to unprecedented levels. For two of its biggest shows, Excision came to Los Angeles' Kia Forum in mid-April and delivered captivating, unparalleled experiences. Despite not being a festival but rather a single event on his extensive 50-stop tour, Excision spared no effort in curating an exceptional lineup. From emerging talents such as Hairitage, DRINKURWATER and LAYZ to industry heavyweights like ATLiens, Eptic and Space Laces, every supporting set featured stellar production, underscoring the Excision Presents' team's meticulous attention to detail. As Excision took the stage, the energy in the venue was already palpable, but the Lost Lands founder wasted no time in elevating it further. He also treated fans to a slurry of surprises, bringing out Dion Timmer and Juelz for performances of their unreleased collabs. Excision's production stands in a league of its own, distinct from even his beloved festival performances. And the experience he offers on his "Nexus" tour is unparalleled, showcasing a combination of energy and immersion that you just can't quite find elsewhere. For those yet to experience the thrill, there are still tickets available for the tour's summer 2024 run here. 19. Picture this: sunset at Coachella on the brand new Quasar stage. What’s better? Well, maybe the fact that Australian electronic trio RÜFÜS DU SOL took the decks for an unprecedented 3+ hour DJ set. Once you get there, you are immediately struck by the massive LED panels that make up the performance area. The striking futuristic design radiated an almost extraterrestrial energy. As RÜFÜS took their place behind the towering DJ booth, those panels blinked to life with abstract, ever-evolving geometric visualizations. We were about to embark on a true audiovisual journey. The opening warm-up saw the group ease us in with understated, atmospheric soundscapes zoning in on a hypnotic, rolling groove. Melodic synth pads ebbed and flowed as RÜFÜS effortlessly blended new unreleased tracks with deeper cult cuts from respected underground imprints. The visual accompaniment matched the vibe – hazy, colored clouds and fractalized natural scenery pulsated organically. Slowly but surely, the intensity was ratcheted up. Acapella vocals from the group’s anthemic hits like “Underwater” were deftly weaved in between punchy, driving kick drums. The visuals shifted too, morphing into hyper-realistic urban environments that disintegrated into otherworldly alien landscapes. We were being transported to another realm. As the night reached a feverish climax in the set’s final lush third, RÜFÜS kicked up the energy into an irresistible techno frenzy. Remixes from scene heavyweights like Adriatique got funky reworks, while the iconic “The Runner” by Foals got a thunderous club edit. Laser rave sticks danced feverishly as the crowd moved as one pulsating organism. Watching RÜFÜS seamlessly flow between underground house, techno, melodic grooves and more was a true clinic in technical wizardry and creative versatility. But it was the fully immersive, symbiotic audiovisual experience that left me in awe. The Quasar stage’s visuals were as much a “performer” as the three artists themselves, transcending standard concert visuals. As the final thumping kicks faded and RÜFÜS raised their arms in triumph, the human ocean roared its approval. We had all just witnessed a historic, boundary-pushing statement that raised the bar for what a DJ “performance” can be. 20. Two of electronic music’s greatest made the most of their time overseas. Illenium and Martin Garrix both played Creamfields in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago. And over the weekend, both posted that they met up in the studio in Tokyo to work on some music! Martin is seen holding a guitar but other than that, no other information has been released. To no one’s surprise, the internet is all for it. With intense die hard followings for both artists, it’s going to be hard to not get excited to hear what the two can create. Hopefully we can get some teases of whatever they have created during festival season. If anything, we’ll hope to have an official release by the end of the year! b2b’s and collabs are popping up all over lately. Just this weekend, Anyma and Eric Prydz dominated Coachella on the new Quasar stage. It’s great to see artists pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to provide us with fresh & interesting tunes for our ears. 21. Dimension and Alison Wonderland hold nothing back in their first collaboration, a soaring dance track called "Satellite." "Satellite" is the perfect fusion of both artists, seamlessly intermingling their signature sounds through an arrangement dripping in nostalgia. The intro sees Wonderland step into the spotlight as her airy vocals lead to a bouncy four-on-the-floor sequence. Her catchy songwriting is yet another highlight in a track brimming with matchless talent. She calls out to those feeling lost, offering herself as a guiding light by virtue of uplifting lyrics that make for a perfect singalong moment during live sets. Then comes a breathtaking drum & bass drop to bring "Satellite" home with a flourish, ultimately delivering an anthemic track that'll prove a staple for both artists all summer long. "Alison Wonderland was the only artist I wanted for this record, her voice is a perfect fit for the 90s-trance influence and it’s a true honour to have her feature," Dimension said in a statement. "When we first met, there was instant chemistry. I remember encouraging her to go on a first date with a man who she is now engaged to and has children with! Releasing a track together is a beautiful full circle moment and we’re both in love with the track." You can listen to "Satellite" below and find the new collaboration on streaming platforms here. 24. Chinese-American producer and DJ HELANG has officially imparted the penultimate single, “No One,” ahead of her forthcoming Lovers of the Unknown EP. Now streaming on her self-founded record label, Dauntless Recordings, “No One” materializes a direct follow up to her March-released one-off, “Wise Devil.” Having tended decks alongside the likes of Eli Brown, CamelPhat, Joris Voorn, and deadmau5‘s Testpilot alter ego, HELANG aims to capitalize on her snowballing traction with the May 17th release of Lovers of the Unknown. Speaking on her latest single, HELANG mused, “When I came across this vocal sample, I just knew I had to incorporate it into [‘No One’]. Next thing you know, I was building a synth bass and gated vocals around the powerful voice, which I hope people can resonate with in terms of being their most authentic and unique versions of themselves.” An intricately-percussive, club-ready techno offering, “No One” triumphantly embodies the Asian-American producer’s sonic signature. As HELANG gears up to deliver her debut EP of 2024, stream “No One” via Dauntless Recordings below. 25. When it comes to the world of electronic dance music, collaborations between superstar DJs and producers are always highly anticipated events. These joint efforts often result in massive hits that dominate festival stages and mainstream charts alike. However, some truly memorable collabs have flown under the radar over the years, overshadowed by the constant influx of new music. In this article, we revisit five forgotten EDM collaborations that deserve to be rediscovered and appreciated. David Guetta & Afrojack – “Louder Than Words” Released in 2010, “Louder Than Words” was a electro house tour de force that brought together two of the biggest names in the genre at the time. Featuring powerful vocal hooks and a high-energy drop, the track perfectly captured the sound that had propelled both David Guetta and Afrojack to superstardom. Despite its undeniable dance floor appeal, the song is often overlooked as both David Guetta and Afrojack have a repertoire of bangers both individually and collectively. Hardwell & Tiësto – “Written in Reverse” In 2014, Dutch powerhouses Hardwell and Tiësto joined forces for “Written in Reverse,” a melodic big room house anthem that showcased the producers’ respective strengths. Blending euphoric breakdowns with hard-hitting drops, the track was a quintessential festival banger that deserved more attention than it received. Perhaps overlooked due to its release amidst an oversaturated market during a time where big room house was booming, “Written in Reverse” remains a hidden gem in both artists’ discographies. Calvin Harris & Nicky Romero – “Iron” Calvin Harris and Nicky Romero made an unlikely pairing on the 2012 track “Iron.” Fusing Harris’ pop sensibilities with Romero’s signature progressive house sound, the result was a high-octane, synth-laden banger that deserved more recognition. “Iron” was the first single from Nicky Romero’s label to reach number one Beatport and was much a crowd hit during the time, however today it’s one we don’t hear as often. The 2010’s era is often known as the golden era of EDM and this track was certainly one we jammed to then and hopefully can bring it back again this festival season! Skrillex & Kaskade – “Lick It” In 2017, dubstep pioneer Skrillex and house music veteran Kaskade joined forces for the unexpected collaboration “Lick It.” Blending their respective styles into a genre-defying hybrid, the track was an experimental departure for both artists that showcased their creative versatility. Unfortunately, “Lick It” flew under the radar, overshadowed by the artists’ more mainstream releases. Porter Robinson & Mat Zo – “Easy” Before embarking on their respective artistic evolutions, Porter Robinson and Mat Zo crafted the electro house gem “Easy” in 2013. A melodic, emotive offering that perfectly captured the sound of the era, the track deserved more recognition than it received. Perhaps overlooked due to its subtlety amidst the bombastic trends of the time, “Easy” remains a standout in both producers’ early discographies. While these five collaborations may have been forgotten by the mainstream, they remain cherished by dedicated fans and serve as reminders of the creative potential that arises when talented artists join forces. As the ever-evolving world of EDM continues to explore new sounds and styles, it’s worth revisiting these hidden gems and rediscovering the magic that made them special in the first place.
