The Mechanical Licensing Collective brings legal action against Spotify for unpaid royalties
The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) announced today that it has filed a legal action against music streaming platform Spotify USA Inc. (Spotify). The action seeks recovery of unpaid royalties under the compulsory mechanical blanket license obtained by Spotify to reproduce and distribute musical works in the United States via its consumer music streaming platform. The action states that beginning in March 2024, Spotify asserted that its Premium Individual, Duo and Family subscription streaming plans were now Bundled Subscription Offerings because those plans included access to audiobooks. Applying the rate formula applicable to Bundled Subscription Offerings results in a reduction of the Service Provider Revenue that Spotify reports, which results in an underpayment of royalties. The MLC believes that Spotify’s position does not comply with applicable laws and regulations. The MLC has statutory authority to address Spotify’s noncompliance with its royalty payment obligations. The MLC is taking legal action to enforce these obligations and ensure that Spotify pays all royalties due from its use of songs on Premium plans. The MLC seeks corrected usage reporting and associated unpaid royalties for periods dating back to March 2024, along with an order requiring compliance going forward. A copy of the complaint can be found here. The post The Mechanical Licensing Collective brings legal action against Spotify for unpaid royalties appeared first on Decoded Magazine.

Released 11 Years Ago: Hardwell & Dyro t. Bright Lights – Never Say Goodbye
11 years have passed since the release of ‘Never Say Goodbye’, and it certainly hasn’t said goodbye to being a massively popular song that can still rock a festival. This collaboration between Hardwell and Dyro would get its premiere at Ultra Music Festival 2013 during Hardwell’s set to an incredible reaction from the crowd and has gone on to accumulate almost 20 million streams on Spotify following its release on the album ‘Hardwell Presents Revealed Volume 4.’ By this point in time Hardwell was already a well-established name in electronic music, and Dyro was starting to make a name for himself having been signed to Hardwell’s record label Revealed Recordings. Dyro would go on to release a remix of Hardwell and Dannic’s ‘Kontiki’ which appeared on ‘The Sound of Revealed 2012.’ The following year the two would combine to create the masterpiece, we all know and love today that would blast around festivals for years to come. The track also received a beautiful vocal performance from the incredibly talented Bright Lights who had previously recorded vocals for ‘Call Me A Spaceman’ but didn’t make the final cut. A year on she got her chance to shine on ‘Never Say Goodbye’ delivering a beautifully powerful vocal performance. During the premiere of ‘Never Say Goodbye’, Hardwell called Dyro the “world’s biggest upcoming DJ” and he has since gone on to create his own record label WOLV Records and release more massive tracks including his collaboration with Martin Garrix, ‘Latency.’ Also, recently Hardwell and Bright Lights have collaborated again on the hard hitting 2023 track ‘Shotgun (It Ain’t Over)’ adding to the list of massive hits Bright Lights has contributed her vocals to. Since its release ‘Never Say Goodbye’ has become an unforgettable track that stands out in an era full of incredible electronic music. The tracks high energy has never faded with its melody still being undeniably irresistible to throw your hands in the air to and forget the world around you.

[Opinion] DJ Snake Left His Professionalism at Home
Renowned French DJ and producer DJ Snake found himself at the center of controversy following his recent performance at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas. The “Turn Down for What” hitmaker, known for his electrifying stage presence and chart-topping hits, took aim at one of the most prestigious electronic dance music festivals in the world, Tomorrowland. Surprisingly, DJ Snake directly attacked Tomorrowland, one of the most famous festivals in the business, by saying, “Fuck Tomorrowland.” It’s fine to say you like one event over another, but DJ Snake’s rude words and lack of interest in Tomorrowland, a festival known for its high-quality production and global appeal, has no sense. What the producer said didn’t end there. Once DJ Snake was done with his EDC set, he went on social media to say again, “EDC VEGAS > TOMORROWLAND.” EDC VEGAS > TOMORROWLAND — DJ SNAKE (@djsnake) May 19, 2024 People in the music business work together, be creative and value each other. DJ Snake’s behavior is not professional enough for an artist of his caliber. Artists, especially those who have fans all over the world, need to know how much their words and deeds matter. Even though everyone has their own tastes, voicing them in a rude and insulting way makes the person and the business as a whole look bad. What made DJ Snake’s comments even more perplexing was the fact that they appeared to be entirely unprovoked. There was no apparent catalyst or reason for the French DJ to lash out at Tomorrowland, a festival he has performed at multiple times in the past. So why did DJ Snake push against Tomorrowland so hard? Some speculated that perhaps DJ Snake’s comments were fueled by a personal grievance or behind-the-scenes disagreement with the Tomorrowland organizers (he’s not on the lineup). However, in the absence of any concrete evidence, these theories remained mere speculation. It seemed like the only reason he said those mean things was to hurt the image of Tomorrowland, a festival that has long been praised for giving music fans around the world unforgettable experiences. DJ Snake’s unprovoked attack on such a prestigious event showed not only a lack of professionalism but also a lack of respect for the hard work and dedication of Tomorrowland organizers, performers, and the many other people who help make the festival a success every year. Wiwek drops Jungle Terror vol. 4 after 4 years
When Dutch super-producer Wiwek comes back to Yellow Claw’s Barong Family with vol. 5 of his famous “Jungle Terror” EP series, new songs are added to celebrate the idea’s 10th anniversary. The EP: Jungle Terror vol. 4 “Jungle Terror vol. 4” EP from Wiwek hasn’t been released in 4 years. “Cola” with Emy Perez starts the party with heavy bass, strong kick drums, and vocals that sound like they were recorded in an urban setting. This is a theme that runs through all three songs. In “Scream” with Holly, the production is influenced by reggaeton, and there is an epic drop. “Crash The Party” features crazy betas that are great for dancing. This EP shows how Wiwek’s art has changed over time. It has themes of freedom, ethnic research, and cultural identity. Here is what he had to say about the most recent part of “Jungle Terror.” In Wiwek’s words Most of the songs on the ‘Jungle Terror vol. 5’ EP have been played a lot in my sets. At first, I just wanted new music for my DJ sets. I thought it would be cool to make a new “Jungle Terror” EP 10 years after the first one came out because the first one came out in 2014. I’m grateful for these pieces, and it was fun to use them in new ways after all these years. – Wiwek Wiwek is not only a DJ, he’s also a pioneer in his field. He’s a real rebel with a cause. Wiwek made his own sound with “jungle terror,” a crazy mix of electronic chaos, tribal percussion, and animalistic energy. His music has been used in international movies, he has worked with Skrillex on genre-bending hits like “Killa,” and he has created Maha Vana Records, a label that lets artists go wild. Wiwek’s first record, “Cycles,” just came out, and now he’s ready to start a new sound adventure that will push the limits and get people dancing. He also made the “The Free and Rebellious” EP, which was used as the soundtrack for a movie shot in Bangkok. This adds to his unique style of combining music and stories. With new songs coming out all the time and exciting projects in the works, 2024 is looking like it will be another big year for Wiwek. EDC Las Vegas 2024 special guest is… Fred Again!
The energy at EDC Las Vegas 2024 hit a whole new level just minutes ago, when Fred Again.. played a surprise set that stunned everyone there. In the hours before his surprise set, Fred Again.. made a lot of people guess with a number of cryptic Instagram stories. His posts showed views of Las Vegas, like the Sphere and the huge EDC festival grounds reflected in his sunglasses. The energy at circuitGROUNDS was evident as the night went on. There were a lot of excited fans on the huge stage. At exactly 11:30 PM, the lights went out and everyone quieted down. All of a sudden, the stage went wild with lights and sounds as Fred Again.. took his place behind the decks. Fred Again.. gave a master class in live computer music for the next 90 minutes. His set was a smooth mix of emotional tunes and high-energy beats that made everyone feel completely happy. Tracks like “Turn On The Lights Again” played over and over again, and the crowd sang along to their catchy choruses. What the crowd did was nothing short of amazing. From the first drop to the last note, the crowd of ravers danced and cheered. It was clear that the artist and the crowd were on the same page. Each beat and melody made a unique tapestry of sound and feeling that people will never forget. Oliver Wickham’s Cinematic Debut EP on Colorize
The name Colorize has come to mean sounds that are on the cutting edge of progressive house and blur the lines between dreamy and mysterious harmonies. Oliver Wickham, a Canadian producer and singer, is a relative newcomer to the scene, but his latest release on the respected label shows a musical growth and artistic vision that belies his youth. Wickham’s first EP as a solo artist is a captivating three-track journey. It shows how deep and dynamic he is as an artist. From the first few notes, it’s clear that we’re going to have a musical experience that goes beyond typical song structures and styles. The EP: Let’s Go Back / Machines / Heart “Let’s Go Back,” the first song on the EP, takes the listener right away to a lush, cinematic environment painted in widescreen sounds. Thunderous basslines rumble with an almost tectonic force. All these sounds give Wickham’s carefully layered grooves a solid base on which to pivot and undulate. A beautiful synth tune rises and falls like a vapor trail, calming and hypnotic at the same time. Scattering percussion hits give the smoothness an exhilarating sense of movement. It’s a tempting way to start, hinting at big areas that haven’t been explored yet. Oliver Wickham If you’re feeling a little too comfortable, the second song on the EP, “Machines,” will break you out of it. From the first sounds on, there is a feeling of dread and digital menace. It’s like hearing the future of cyberpunk in music. Wickham’s vocals repeat the scary theme “the machines are coming,” and industrial clangs and whirrs come together to make an uprising metallic beat over which cold machine zombies of melody stagger. When you think that all humanity has been taken away, soft piano refrains cut through the sound like beams of light, their melancholy refrains going straight to your soul. The way the emotions are juxtaposed and the different types of music blend so well that the viewer is both haunted and riveted. While “Heart And Mind” is a beautiful song, it’s the last one that really shows how talented Wickham is. It’s an amazing singing performance built on top of a very funky progressive house groove. It’s an example of hooks, melodies, and atmospheres. They are all meant to make you feel good. Wickham’s vocals soar and glide through a maze of catchy harmonic motifs and carefully processed loops, holding the rhythm in place and breaking it up with virtuosic energy. In the fantastic last few seconds of the song, angelic choirs rise above a flood of arpeggiated joy and rubber-band basslines. It’s rapturous music played with superb poise and control. Oliver Wickham‘s first EP on Colorize is a thrillingly broad statement that moves smoothly across stylistic lines in a scene that is often divided into narrow sub-genres and microniches. With sound design that is as precise as a surgeon and music and ambiance that are almost like paintings, he’s made a debut that is greater than the sum of its parts. This beautiful three-track odyssey from a big new talent is required listening for anyone looking for truly progressive and emotional electronica. Narco's Nightmares Fizzle Under Lights of Tomorrowland's First-Ever Festival in Medellín
We all know about Medellín. Once a nexus of narco-terror and urban warfare, the city comes with skeletons—both literal and figurative—in its closet. So when the world's leading EDM festival brand, Tomorrowland, announced its expansion into the city, it only served to deepen the mystery. After the demise of Pablo Escobar in 1993 and the eventual dismantling of the Medellín Cartel, the city was left to grapple with the aftermath of decades of violence and lawlessness. It has a bright future three decades later, but the legacy of the narco era continues to cast a long shadow and the region still faces challenges related to crime, poverty and inequality. The city and its grim history are inextricably connected, and no festival or event can rupture the link. So it would be ignorant to call last weekend's CORE festival a metaphor for Medellin's metamorphosis. But that doesn't mean the city can't try to rewrite its own narrative. True to CORE's nature-inspired ethos, the festival was like a butterfly emerging from Medellín's blood-stained chrysalis. "In all the years I've traveled to Medellín to visit family, I've never experienced anything like [CORE]," said attendee David Contosta. "It's amazing to see how the city has changed over the years and the impact tourism has had on the city itself." After Tomorrowland sold out the two-day festival "in record time," each beat pulsed with the defiance of a city that refused to be defined by its scars. The collective energy at Parque Norte was electric, a shared heartbeat of a city moving forward—not trapped in the past. "I know this city has had a dark past, but attending the festival, it gave the opportunity for local talent to perform and for the locals of the city to forget about the violence and struggles of the day-to-day and to embrace the experience," Contosta continued. "I hope this event is the first of many and that when people think of Medellín, they'll think of the amazing people, rich culture and talented music scene, and not its dark past." An attendee of CORE Medellín enjoying the music.Tomorrowland It's tough to describe Tomorrowland's CORE Stage and its design—a split human head with visuals where the face should be—to someone who hasn't seen it in-person. It turned into a bio-luminescent giant, combining the humanoid eeriness of Ex Machina with the surrealist nature vibes of Where the Wild Things Are. In front of the stupefying stage, lasers in the night sky pierced ghosts of sicarios. Behind it, the lights of homes in the hills of Manrique, Versalles II and many other Medellín neighborhoods turned the area into a radiant mosaic. Engineered and recently debuted by Tomorrowland's industry-leading creative team, the CORE Stage is nothing short of an architectural marvel. The groundbreaking stage inflates and deflates to compactly fit into a single container, making it portable and adaptable to locations around the world. It's a feat of technological utopianism that could deeply influence the global music festival landscape, especially as as inflationary pressures hike the rising costs of touring to unsustainable levels. Tomorrowland The phantasmal CORE Stage saw larger-than-life performances from a slew of leading techno and house music artists, including Agents Of Time, Mind Against, ANNA, Kölsch and Brina Knauss. Speaking with EDM.com, Knauss, an emerging electronic music superstar out of Slovenia, called the festival "a dream." But it was BICEP who delivered arguably the weekend's best performance. The duo invited us into their entirely one-of-a-kind world, where the sublime textures of ambient music meet the primal energy of breakbeat. It was the kind of set where you close your eyes and lose yourself in the vastness, only to be yanked back by the insistent pulse of BICEP's percussive barrages. Two new stages also debuted at CORE Medellín. First was AltVerda, which was situated in the woods amidst a series of whimsical light columns. It's here where Chet Faker threw down an exuberant disco-house set, his kaleidoscopic beats taking root underneath our dancing feet. Deeper in the forest, over at the Arbo stage, glowing white fabrics draped from trees and morphed in real-time as both wind and lasers sliced through. The intimate atmosphere played host to a number of local DJs, like Sinego and WOST, both of whom couldn't stop smiling as they performed for Tomorrowland, the world's quintessential dance music brand. The Arbo Stage at Tomorrowland's CORE Medellín festival on May 12th, 2024.Tomorrowland While Tomorrowland reigns supreme as the consummate festival experience, CORE stands as a majestic parallel universe. From a cultural standpoint, it's tough to ignore the differences between its inherent rave culture and that of America. All of the DJs at CORE Medellín rarely—if ever—spoke on the microphone. We were never told to put our hands up and there wasn't a single countdown before a drop, nor a demand to jump. We also didn't hear any squawking chants of "woo-woo." Music was the language, and it severed the intense Spanish language barrier. Judgements felt nonexistent and it was impossible not to make new friends. The authenticity didn't just bleed—it hemorrhaged. Tomorrowland may be the sun that illuminates the festival universe, but CORE is the brilliant moon, shifting the tides of festival culture with its own wellspring of experiences. For those unable to make the pilgrimage to Belgium, CORE is a must. CORE's next stop is São Paulo, where its stage will appear at Tomorrowland Brasil for the first time in October. In the meantime, you can keep a pulse on the brand as well as its events, record label and radio show here. This is how EDC Las Vegas 2024 new mainstage looks like
Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) is introducing its new 2024 mainstage in Las Vegas. The new stage looks like a cathedral. It combines Gothic buildings with EDC‘s signature psychedelic style. In the middle is a huge, lit-up stained glass design that shines with bright colors. It is surrounded by shapes that look like tall church towers and elaborate organ pipes. Owls, which are a well-known symbol at EDC, are used as decorations on the complicated stage. Overall, the result is both majesty and otherworldliness, making it the perfect setting for artists to create journeys of euphoric musical transcendence in the middle of the desert. Year after year, EDC’s stages have amazed guests with their amazing creativity and cutting-edge production. The 2024 cathedral stage looks like it will do even better. Design and Aesthetics: The stage is crafted with a striking blend of architectural grandeur and modern electronic aesthetics. The design features elements reminiscent of Gothic cathedrals, such as large stained-glass-style displays and organ pipes. Central to the stage is a massive, colorful stained-glass-like window, a design element that enhances the visual appeal and aligns with the theme of a fantastical, dreamlike environment. Owl motifs and intricate patterns contribute to the whimsical and enchanting vibe typical of EDC stages. Armin van Buuren’s Dance Anthem ‘Blah Blah Blah’ Turns 6 Years Old
“All We Ever Hear From You is Blah Blah Blah” a line that still resonates with people across the world, 6 years after the release of the hit single ‘Blah Blah Blah’ by Armin van Buuren. Released on Armin’s label Armada on the 18th of May, 2018, the track quickly transformed from a catchy hit to a dance floor anthem. Whether it be Armin playing it on the mainstages of Ultra Miami or Tomorrowland, you’ll hear crowds chanting along to the titular lines “Cause it’s ya-ya, ya-ya Blah-Blah, Blah-Blah”. EDMTunes New Music Friday – Week 20
Listen to the most flavour-packed tracks we discovered this week. Music makes the world go round. And in that regard, we’re constantly on the lookout for new, exciting tunes to share with our audience. We’ve found some that cause goosebumps, and make you open your eyes and get up from your chair to dance. So put on your best pair of headphones, or turn up your speakers, and enjoy this week’s New Music Friday. Here are our top picks for the best music we came across this week, in no particular order. Mezraa – Never Leave Genre: House, Progressive Trance Kicking off this week’s NMF is Montreal’s Mezraa. The artist has developed a sound through the years that borrows a ton of elements from a bundle of Dance genres, and with it he’s created his own delicate broth. ‘Never Leave‘, this release, comes to be the perfect blend of House vibes and a Trance aura of the highest order. The track makes a sped-up vocal the star of the show, turning into the connective tissue throughout since it’s present at all times. Under the vocal, though, lies a beautiful chord progression, once a soft, shy lead, which as the bars go on, turns into a much more present, open lead. The end result is quite close in spirit to those old early 2000s Progressive Trance gems. Aaliyah – Try Again (Yazz Min Remix) Genre: Deep House “Mmmmmmmm“. That’s the first thing you’ll try to hold when listening to this belter of a remix. Keeping the legacy of Aaliyah alive and present, artist Yazz Min respectfully flipped her iconic ‘Try Again‘ hit and turned it into a different, savoury Deep House tune. True Deep House, as I often say. Pairing the sexy elements of Aaliyah’s R&B with the iconically oomphy elements of Deep House, this rendition grabs the best sounds of the original and makes it dancefloor worthy. In fact, this would go really well in one of those landscape-ey DJ sets on crowded rooftops. Feel the pianos, the original textures, and fly away. Clubbing Purposes · FREE DOWNLOAD: Aaliyah – Try Again (Yazz Min Remix) Trance Reserve & Karl Osvan – Unbreakable Genre: Uplifting Trance Looking for an uplifting journey? This one is best enjoyed with eyes closed. Trance heavyweights Trance Reserve (quite fittingly) and Karl Osvan joined forces for a tune that lives up to its name, ‘Unbreakable‘. This one is a one-way ticket to musical Heaven, I’m telling you. If you’re into Uplifting, you’ve come to the right place. Through vocal beds, airy plucks, open saws, and a strong beat, ‘Unbreakable’ tells a story and it makes you levitate. It truly takes the best elements of Trance and makes the most out of all of them. We’re glad to feature this track this week on NMF! Clark Key – Break Genre: Techno, Tech House Rising House star Clark Key hails from South Florida and has a knack for pulling elements and ideas from all across the spectrum of Electronic music. Though his sound leans slightly more to the Techier side of things, his aim is to put out content people will not only love but also groove to, and his tracks truly embrace that extra kick of dynamism. Tech House comes clean through Key’s latest, ‘Break‘. Detuned synths, tension, silence, crowded areas, every aspect of a fun track makes an appearance in here. And if that wasn’t enough, the cherry on top — or rather, on the bottom — is a jumpy bass, quite resemblant of Psytrance, but turned into the perfect House base for a different tune. Nice. Krysta Youngs, Stash Konig & Liquid Todd – Let’s Go Back (Wassu Remix) Genre: Progressive House, Deep House Did you read the remixer’s name? Read it again. And again. Yup, it’s Wassu. You know it’s going to be a piece of bliss the one you’re about to listen to. Perfect for the summer season ahead, he’s been on top of the situation: crafting the best possible take on a feel-good, quite nostalgic tune. Using the happy ‘Let’s Go Back‘ by Krysta Youngs, Stash Konig and Liquid Todd, Wassu created the perfect track for those afternoons by the beach, with a good laugh and proper company. Give it a listen and try to imagine anything else other than that warm sandy sunset. We couldn’t. KRÆK – Architecture Genre: Drum & Bass Just out of the oven. In fact, rumours say they had to take this one out of the oven before it burnt the oven itself — this one couldn’t get any hotter. KRÆK is a Drum & Bass DJ and producer from Germany with a passion for precision. You wouldn’t think otherwise of someone with a solid background in Computer Science and Business, and he doesn’t disappoint. Delicately and finely tuned, ‘Architecture‘ is one of the latest gems from him, and it really elevates the Drum & Bass experience a couple notches. Dark, fast-paced, Jungle-Intelligent-esque, this is the tune which broke the mould. Upon listening, you can distinguish it from most DnB pieces, and it’s that uniqueness which earns KRÆK the spot on this week’s NMF. MI.LA & Maxxim – Nishati Genre: Organic House, Afro House Songuara is back, baby! We’d missed these guys. Out now on Songuara Tales is label boss Maxxim joining MI.LA for quite the ethnic-sounding track, ‘Nishati‘. If you’ve never heard the work of these two, boy are you in for a treat. Organic House at its finest, and this time with that extra kick of tension, aka lacking claps on beats two and four. ‘Nishati’ is written on an unconventional scale, giving it the Middle Eastern treatment. Add to that the incredible percussion, the flutes, and all those little pieces of ear candy, and you have yourself quite the dancefloor rocker. Carrying the essence of Afro House over to its brother genre, this experiment couldn’t have gone better. Castion – Loose & Dance Genre: Tech House We’ve got a fire closer for this week’s NMF. Hailing from Spain, Castion is a Tech House producer making waves in the industry at a fast pace. At the age of 14, he dived into the world of production, and since then he’s grown a discography that accrues to over 80 compositions. Talk about working! The B-side to his latest EP is titled ‘Loose & Dance‘ can quite make you lose it and dance the night away. The amount of filth of the beat is undescribable, frankly. Between the rolling percussion, the reverse hits, the vocal, the tension, and the oomph and low end this thing carries, we’ll definitely be blasting this one during the weekend. Nonstop? Won’t specify details… Final Words Stay tuned, for more of our compilations every Tuesday and Friday — based on demand. [Event Review] ILLENIUM Throws Down At Official HITC Afterparty At Terminal 5 NYC
After performing the first ever ILLENIUM B2B Dabin set at 88Rising’s Head In The Clouds Festival NY, the Denver producer went on to perform at the official afterparty taking place at Terminal 5 this past weekend. This wasn’t the first time that ILLENIUM has performed at T5 and this one was another one for the books. Starting up the night was the NYC based group Sadbois, warming up the venue with a good mix of melodic dubstep and heartfelt beats. Then when the clock hit 12am, LA based producer Elephante took the decks. At this point in the night, Terminal 5 was pretty packed with a steady flow of people arriving to the venue from the festival. Elephante propelled the night forward with his dynamic transitions and upbeat drops. He played out crowd favorites such as ‘Dynasty‘, ‘Catching On‘, and ‘Glass Mansion‘. What’s unique about his sets is that he is not afraid to take the mic, as he got the whole venue singing along to his vibeful tracks. One highlight of his performance was when he played his latest track ‘Say It Like You Mean it‘ with Sabai, which saw an immediate response with many in the crowd singing along to it. At 1am, ILLENIUM took centerstage and the venue was completely packed with it being a sold out show. The excitement was in the air as many in the crowd were brandishing their ILLENIUM jerseys. Everybody was ready at this point of the night and ILLENIUM took no time to start his set with his heavy hitters. The energy was at an all time high with Illenials headbanging to each and every track. After seeing ILLENIUM more than a dozen times, his performances always have a perfect mix between the heavier bangers and heartfelt melodies. His tracks always have a way to connect with the crowds, with everyone singing along to each soulful vocal. ‘Good Things Fall Apart‘, ‘Takeaway‘, and ‘All That Really Matters‘ were just some of the tracks that he dished out in his arsenal. A personal highlight of the night is his most recent collaboration with Seven Lions, ‘Not Even Love‘ which already has over 4 million streams since its release in March. After the night was over, it’s safe to say everyone in attendance left in a high mood. For those who didn’t have enough ILLENIUM over the past weekend, they can catch him playing Friday at EDC Las Vegas. [Event Review] Head in The Clouds NY Festival Celebrates 2nd Edition In Style
Nine years ago, founder Sean Miyashiro planted the seeds of 88rising in New York City. His vision was clear: to champion the voices of immigrants, both Asian and beyond. Fast forward to today, 88rising has blossomed into a global music powerhouse, renowned for its trendsetting curatorial style and groundbreaking collaborations. The media collective has become a champion of diversity and inclusivity, representing underrepresented artists and creating a platform where performers and fans can unite and celebrate Asian culture and music. This growth has spawned various ventures, including the crown jewel, Head In The Clouds (HITC). This vibrant festival celebrates the music, culture, and cuisine of Asian culture. This past weekend, HITC touched down in Forest Hills Queens on May 11th and May 12th, to celebrate AAPI month. NYC, especially Queens is known to be a melting pot of the world and that was reflected in not only the lineup but the diverse crowd in attendance. Over 10,000 fans flocked to the stadium over the weekend to see their favorite artists from across the world, including South Korea, Japan, the Philippians and more. One big part of asian culture is the diverse food options. HITC did very well in bringing in local food vendors that truly represented a big part of how Asians grew up. Some of the vendors included 5ive Spice, Gai Chicken and Rice, OBAO Noodles & BBQ, Potluck Club, Silk., Tabetomo, and Tomokase. photo credits: lindseyblane On Saturday, the Korean group Balming Tiger came out strong with their irresistible charm and upbeat energy. They really knew how to work their stage with their intricate choreography which would constantly erupt cheers amongst the crowd. Next up, New York native Juliet Ivy has been a young star to watch seeing her meteoric rise through her viral social media videos. The 22 year old songstress is known for combining pop, indie, hyperpop, and R&B into one seamless sound. During her performance, she captured the heartstrings of all in attendance with her cheeky lyrics and playful melodies. Following directly after was Vietnamese American singer thuy. With a nostalgic R&B sound and stories of love and self-empowerment to tell, she has been making big noise in the industry. Songs like ‘playing tricks‘, ‘chances‘, and ‘no ties‘ were all the vibes throughout her performance. She went on to close with ‘girls like me don’t cry‘ which has over 67 million streams alone on Spotify. photo credits: lindseyblane photo credits: estherjy.kim Another sensation act that performed on day 1 was wave to earth, a three-member band consisting of singer-songwriter Daniel Kim, drummer Dong Kyu Shin, and bassist John Cha. The rock band’s soulful vocals and soothing compositions was a calming experience in attendance before the next act. Taking the stage at 7:45pm was ILLENIUM and Dabin who performed their first ever B2B set in history. It was at this point during the day in which the atmosphere changed up dramatically. Their performance was high strung peak energy, commanding the 10,000 in attendance with their melodic dubstep set. The production was spectacular as well, with no shortage of pyrotechnics and vibrant visuals. To close out day 1 was the five member South Korean girl group (G)I-DLE. Walking onto stage with a drumroll, the group opened with ‘Super Lady’ which was fitting for what they embody. Their whole performance was packed brim with electrifying energy as they sang out popular tracks such as ‘LION’, ‘LATATA‘, ‘Wife, and ‘Queencard‘. They then closed out in epic fashion with ‘I DO‘. photo credits: Bryan.Kwon . photo credits: lindseyblane Starting off day 2 was Chinese Vietnamese American rapper Spence Lee, who wowed the early attendees with his crowd pleasing rap bars. Next up was Indonesian rapper, singer, songwriter and producer, Warren Hue, who continued to hype up the crowds with his rap verses. American singer-songwriter Lyn Lapid took centerstage at 5pm, and this was when the venue was really filling up. Besides her intricate lyrics, what’s interesting is that her 2023 EP to love in the 21st century, is an ode to the messy 21st century love romances. She drew inspiration from Gen Z romantic comedies like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Summer I Turned Pretty to tell the story of falling in love. She went on to sing crowd favorites such as ‘In My Mind’, ‘Comatose’, all while wowing the crowd with her guitar riffs. Next up was the Japanese girl group ATARASHII GAKKO!. The group is known for eclectic-pop tracks, idiosyncratic choreography, and schoolgirl aesthetic. This was the first time I saw them perform live and their crowd presence is even more immense than what you see on videos online. Deafening cheers echoed through the venue throughout their whole performance. The group started off with ‘Toryanse‘ and ‘Omakase‘ which immediately got the crowd moving. Their intricate choreography is definitely one to applaud for as they performed perfectly in sync. They even utilized broomsticks in their performance for ‘Arigatou‘. Next up was South Korean singer Bibi who doesn’t need an introduction. She stuns in her performances with her unique sound that’s like a pop mix with contemporary. Some notable highlight of her performance was when she sang ‘City Love‘ and ‘Sugar Rush‘. To close out the festival was Joji who has become synonymous with Head in the Clouds, so much that he has a track called ‘Head In The Clouds‘ which has over 88 million streams on Spotify. It was a full hour of being serenaded with crowd favorites such as ‘Sanctuary‘, ‘Daylight‘, and ‘Pretty Boy’. He went on to close out the night with ‘Glimpse of Us‘, with everyone waving their phone flashlights in the air. photo credits: lindseyblane photo credits: lindseyblane The post [Event Review] Head in The Clouds NY Festival Celebrates 2nd Edition In Style appeared first on EDMTunes.

The Iconic ‘Café Del Mar’ Gets Two New Remixes From Orbital And Michael Mayer
A dancefloor timeless classic just got reimagined by quite the heavyweights. Looking back a couple of decades, certain songs grew to be turning points in the history of Dance music. Acts such as John Summit’s appearance changing how we perceive Tech House, or how Afterlife came by and redefined Techno from the warehouses and dark rooms to the open air, although recent, are clear examples of points in time when music changed. And perhaps one of the first huge turning points in Dance music came with the Trance movement back in the 90s. Kind of like the 80s equivalent in Electronic music, so many iconic tunes come from that decade. ‘For An Angel’, ‘Children’, ‘Played-A-Live’, and so, SO many more. Well, one of those special tracks in Dance music history has got to be Energy 52‘s timeless ‘Café Del Mar‘. Café Del Mar The 1993 release became an absolute anthem of Trance. Produced by German DJs Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby and named after the famous Ibiza beach bar, the track became synonymous with the island’s euphoric, sun-kissed club scene. With its mesmerising melodies and uplifting harmonies, it became a staple for DJs at sunset sets the world over. It even topped Mixmag’s ‘Top 100 Tunes of All Time’ back in 2001. The double-edged sword of a classic track is precisely that. Everybody loves it, and everybody wants to get their hands on it. Can you count the amount of remixes they’ve done to ‘Silence’ over the years? Me neither. That’s what I’m talking about. With a track with such a rich history, it’s bound to happen that over the years people flood the internet with their own takes. And it’s tough to separate the “meh” from the really good renditions. Well, two really good renditions were just unleashed today. Meet the remixers, Orbital and Michael Mayer. Orbital Pioneering British duo Orbital, known for their ground-breaking live shows and seminal tracks like ‘Halcyon and On and On‘ and their remix of Golden Girls’ ‘Kinetic‘, are still shaping the scene after three entire decades. Their 2024 album — Orbital (The Green Album Expanded) — and following tour show they can blend modern sounds with their signature style, solidifying their legendary status. Their take on ‘Café Del Mar’ is a nod to the past, a lovely blend of elements from yesterday that are so tasty when combined. Highly resonant saws meet the soft plucky tones of the original track, surrounded by nostalgic pads, all resting gracefully over a Breakbeat platform. A true example of minimalistic productions gone absolutely right. No element is a filler: every sound has a purpose. Michael Mayer One of the largest in Cologne’s scene, Michael Mayer co-founded the influential Kompakt label. His work spans genres as varied as Microhouse to Ambient Techno. Renowned for his meticulous remixes and collaborations, he adds yet another milestone to his discography today. His remix explores all things hypnotic, tribal, highly energetic and uplifting. Back to the four-on-the-floor vibe, Mayer’s take makes use of more open synths, slightly distorted drum patterns, white noise, and delivers something that we can only describe as the perfect in-between of past and present. Listen to these banging new remixes for ‘Café Del Mar‘, courtesy of Orbital and Michael Mayer, below. Stay tuned to our page for the latest news and views from our beloved Dance industry.
