Kygo’s ‘Without You’ with HAYLA Ushers in a Summer of Melancholy Dance Beats
It’s shaping up to be the summer of the sad dance ballad, with Kygo’s new tune ‘Without You’ featuring HAYLA out now. A refreshingly longer track at over four minutes, HAYLA’s bluesy singing is juxtaposed by Kygo’s signature melodic piano riffs. And while there’s not much of the Tropical House sound that launched Kygo into mainstream popularity, the uplifting progressive beats will have you belting along to the melancholy lyrics. ‘Without You’ gives us a taste of what’s to come from Kygo’s fifth studio album, releasing on June 21. Simply titled KYGO, the EP seems to be shaping up as a reflective of the Norwegian’s storied career, which began in 2013 after uploading his remix of Ed Sheeran’s ‘I See Fire’ and the 2014 single ‘Firestone’ featuring Conrad Sewell. 2024 has seen releases like ‘Whatever’ featuring Ava Max, which samples Shakira’s hit ‘Whenever, Wherever’ and ‘For Life’ featuring Zak Abel and Nile Rodgers. Kygo, whose real name is Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, became the fastest artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify in 2015. He released his debut album Cloud Nine in 2016 and has since collaborated with major artists like Selena Gomez and Imagine Dragons. His accessible blend of pop and tropical house music made him a pioneer of the genre and his notable achievements include being the first house music producer to perform at an Olympic closing ceremony (Rio 2016), ranking 3rd on Billboard’s Dance 100 in 2018, and consistently placing in DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs. As the summer sun blazes on, Kygo’s latest track ‘Without You’ promises to be an anthem for the season, blending heartache with danceable beats. Listen below. Interview: Tulum is the Ibiza of North America – Ritish
When you picture a beach club in Tulum, drum and bass probably isn’t the first soundtrack you expect to accompany your mojito. For the last three years, a 170bpm speaker heist has taken Mexico by storm every March, with the mighty LOCUS festival flipping the script to put Tulum on the map for much more than house music, bougie holidays and Spring Break. The men responsible are Ritesh and Jigar Patel. As well as launching the first LOCUS festival in Tulum in 2022, they are also founders of ticketing platform The Ticket Fairy. With the support of this platform, they’re taking the LOCUS concept to Indonesia for the inaugural LOCUS Bali coming in hot in June. I caught up with Ritesh to find out what inspired his multi-stop ticket to world drum and bass domination. “Tulum was one of the only places in the world still open during the pandemic,” says Ritesh of the place he is dialling in from, palm trees waving through the window of his zoom screen. “I’ve been spending four months of every year in Mexico since late 2020.” “There are some incredible beach clubs, and festivals here in Tulum. There has been an electronic music culture here for a long while, even when the rest of the world was closed.” With outdoor venues still up and running, the vast majority of bars and clubs started using Ritesh’s Ticket Fairy as their platform of choice during COVID. It was an easy switch. The user-friendly platform provided a better experience for promoters and a loyalty program that drove engagement and revenue. There’s also a built-in resale function so no one can buy and resell for profit. “We built strong relationships with local operations crews, production people and promoters as they began to use Ticket Fairy,” says Ritesh. “During that process, I grew to know more about why Tulum was one of the top event destinations for house music in the world.” Crucially, Ritesh was aware that there has never been a drum and bass festival in Mexico, or in North, South or Central America, ever. “We saw an opportunity to create something brand new, to do something that had never existed before,” he says. “Tulum is the Ibiza of North America. People will always come here for house music. Why not expose them to music they haven’t heard before?” Ritesh and Jigar have certainly done that, reframing the luxe holiday destination of Tulum as a temporary haven for super sharpshooters and original nuttahs from around the world. Of course, this week in the sun has not been without its challenges. “This year we had noise complaints at one of our venues. We were supposed to be there for three days and another venue for two days. We had to move to the second venue, an incredible cenote, earlier than planned. It was very challenging to deconstruct everything mid-festival, but we made it happen.” The core of the success is engaging and working with the local community. “My Spanish is pretty rusty,” says Ritesh, “but we’ve got some trusted boots on the ground.” The community engagement element of LOCUS is crucial and goes beyond hiring locals to be part of his team. He offers tickets to locals at heavily discounted prices and feels a strong connection to the culture and country of Mexico, choosing to make it home for several months of the year. On June 14, Ritesh and Jigar are taking their tried-and-tested business model to Indonesia to introduce the world to LOCUS Bali. The brand spanking new venue, Luna Beach Club in Nuanu is Burning Man tribal meets beach club luxe in a futuristic development that spells bougie in every language. It’s going to be so satisfying to hear the filthiest tunes and most sublime liquid in such an idyllic session. Paradise means lots of things to lots of people, this is definitely how mine looks. Drum and bass originated in dark clubs with sticky floors, but I think we can all agree it’s nice to enjoy it in a fancy place with a margarita. It’s also a great excuse to book another holiday. “We were asked to launch the Ticket Fairy in Bali for the Nuanu development,” says Ritesh.“Luna Beach Club where we are hosting LOCUS Bali is just one part of this future-focused development, which encompasses multiple venues, including a residential component and a school.” “It’s a similar story to how we chose Tulum. I went there and realised I’d discovered a beautiful and undiscovered location for drum and bass, along with a strong connection to community and country.” “There’s a historical connection with Bali and drum and bass. Around 10 years ago Paradise in Bali was held, and there’s a passionate local DnB scene, with several crews working hard to grow the audience, such as Oraclesoundlab, and DJs such as Koyuki and Rizkycore.” “The venue for LOCUS Bali has been super supportive and is helping us with local logistics, making sure we do things correctly and respectfully. LOCUS’s job is to bring the best DnB DJs we can and create an amazing experience.” That brief has been well and truly nailed. LOCUS Bali’s second release lineup dropped as I was pulling this piece together. Adding the likes of S.P.Y, Harriet Jaxxon, The Upbeats, Degs, Makoto and Charli Brix to an already stacked lineup including Fabio and Grooverider, London Elektricity, TC, Pola and Bryson, Etherwood and Ivy Lab, LOCUS has made so many dreams come true. If the people weren’t flocking before, they would be now. A duo on the first lineup that came as a pleasant surprise for some people was Stakka and Skynet, who haven’t toured together in years. “I approached Skynet and asked if he would consider doing a comeback set,” says Ritesh. “I told him how much of a big deal their music was to me back in the day. We tried to make it happen in Tulum, but it didn’t work out. But we nailed it for Bali. It took a year and a half to sort out!” It’s a surefire bet that Bali will be filled with even more Australians than usual in the middle of June. Not to mention our drum and bass-obsessed Kiwis and our South East Asian brothers and sisters who are thirsty for a fix of 170 BPM. Not surprisingly the main patrons of LOCUS Tulum are largely from the states, but there are plenty of Brits and Germans who make the pilgrimage. “If we can get people to Tulum, then we can definitely get people to Bali as there’s such an amazing DnB scene in the region,” says Ritesh. As well as spending time in Mexico, Ritesh splits his time between Dubai and the U.S., but he’s originally from London. The LOCUS concept was bedded down in Bristol, where many iconic drum and bass projects came to life. Among other important partnerships that have made the success of LOCUS possible is the Ticket Fairy’s partnership with Sun and Bass. For those who have felt the magic of Sardinia and understand why September is a non-negotiable date in the drum and bass calendar, you may see some common themes in Ritesh’s production. As well as being their chosen ticketing platform, they are strong partners. “Sun and Bass are very supportive and connected to LOCUS,” he says. “We scheduled our two events very intentionally. The dates are purposefully staggered. If you want to go somewhere in European winter, you’ve got LOCUS Tulum. In June, if the southern hemisphere wants to keep warm, they go to LOCUS Bali. After that, everyone makes the pilgrimage to San Teodoro for Sun and Bass in September. There’s no scheduling conflict.” Every year, the fabled Sun and Bass festival sells out in minutes. It’s very hard to get a ticket. They’ve been in the business for decades and a lot of work has gone into building their allegiance. In another smart move, Sun and Bass have added LOCUS to their loyalty program, meaning if you buy a LOCUS ticket, you are one step closer to your golden ticket to Sardinia. “It’s the biggest compliment,” says Ritesh. “It’s rare that a festival would consider another festival’s attendees to be equivalent to their own. Sun and Bass is our sister festival and we are proud of that connection.” I’m curious to know where in the world Ritesh wants to stick his next pin as his next destination drum and bass concept. His answer surprises me. “Two festivals a year is enough,” he laughs. “I think we’ll stick to Mexico and Bali for now.” Tell your boss you’re taking a week off in June. Book your flight. Grab your bikini. Bag your villa. Decoded will be seeing you at the first LOCUS Bali on 14-17 June. Tickets here. Cercle Odyssey, the new 360° immersive concert
Cercle announced the first nomad musical structure of its kind in the world. This marks the start of a new era in live touring entertainment. Cercle Odyssey brings together music, technology, and new ideas to make an unforgettable trip for people all over the world. Cercle Odyssey: a 360° immersive concert where phones are not allowed The innovative idea changes the usual concert structure, going beyond limits and boundaries to create an all-encompassing sensory experience. My current obsession is to create the shortest connection between the music played by the artist, the video narrative that we will present live on the screens and the audience’s emotions. I want to connect these 3 things together at the deepest level and I believe this is still underdeveloped in the entertainment industry. If, by the end of a Cercle Odyssey show, I see people on the dance floor literally moved to tears, then I will consider it a success. – Derek Barbolla (Cercle founder and Creative Director) Cercle Odyssey will change the way people experience concerts. It combines live music with a new kind of visual storytelling in a 360° projection scene. This modern odyssey, based on the story of Ulysses, offers a multidimensional experience: Odyssey comes to each person, making them feel like they’ve accomplished a lot when they get home after a long trip. Visually, we will keep up and even transcend our very specific and unique Cercle signature. The videos will be real, human and natural. We feel that we need this sort of humanity in the content, in a world where we sometimes feel disconnected from nature, from Earth… We are actually going the opposite way of most of the visuals we currently see in the electronic music scene. We will be working with the amazing Neels Castillon as a film director and the narrative and visual structure of Cercle Odyssey will revolve around the universal quest of “returning home,” inspired by the adventures of Homer’s hero. A few characters will evolve through encounters, beautiful landscapes, and natural phenomena, which merge through a prism of vivid and intimate colors. Each concert will be completely unique, and will unfold like a living painting. – Derek Barbolla Neels Castillon, who co-founded Motion Palace, will be in charge of directing Cercle Odyssey’s videos. He will add his own unique style of storytelling to them. His work has a unique style and a deep understanding of art. It looks at how people relate to nature and its huge, unexplored areas. The lineup and the artists Cercle Odyssey will work with artists from a wide range of styles and backgrounds to make musical programming. Later this year, the acts that will play at Cercle Odyssey will be made public. Cercle’s set design is a work of engineering and creativity that combines cutting-edge technology with environmentally friendly materials. The scenography we created for Cercle, in its pure form, serves as a bridge between the event venue and the surrounding world, like a panoramic window onto the planet we inhabit. The monumental doors that comprise Odyssey transport us on a journey between dream and reality, between sky and earth, through space and time. – Victor Perrin & Samuel Chatain, RAINBOW, Scenography Studio No more LED walls; Cercle chooses projectors Cercle Odyssey The 2300 m² of huge projection screens that surround the crowd are a big part of how technically advanced the show is. These cutting-edge screens are 10 to 12 meters (40 to 40 feet) tall and 55 meters (180 feet) long. They are based on standard movie screens and show a changing set of high-quality 8K images that are perfectly timed with the music. Cercle Odyssey is unique not only because it uses cutting-edge technology, but also because it cares about the environment and rents out all of its sound, light, and screens locally. Cercle doesn’t have to move around a huge load of LED screens because they use 29 high-tech projectors instead of standard LED screens to light up the set. This cuts down on energy use and pollution from movement by a huge amount. The use of screens is also an impressive piece of technology. The team at Cercle seamlessly integrates these projectors to make an experience that is just as beautiful as traditional ways while leaving behind less of a carbon footprint. No phone policy To make sure that everyone in the crowd can fully experience what’s going on, phones are not allowed at all inside the set. This helps everyone feel like they are there and connected, which makes the experience stronger as a whole. As a farewell gift, though, each guest will get a box with videos from Cercle. In short, what’s Cercle Odyssey? What is Cercle Odyssey? A new nomadic concert structure blending live music with 360° projected visuals. What makes it unique? Immersive combination of music, visuals, and narrative storytelling in a panoramic environment. Who creates the visuals? Director Neels Castillon is known for capturing human/nature connections. What kind of music? Artists whose music resonates both audibly and visually. How is it sustainable? Local equipment rental and projector setup minimize emissions. No phones allowed? Yes, to allow full immersion. Filmed content is given as a souvenir. When/where is it touring? 2025 dates/locations TBA. Pre-register for early notification. Movement Festival 2024 Honored Longtime Legends and Rising Stars in the Birthplace of Techno
Despite some challenging mid-festival weather, Movement 2024 once again showcased why fans from all over the world descend upon Detroit year after year. The festival's producers, Paxahau, hosted another entry in the historic festival's saga over Memorial Day Weekend. While many of today's large-scale festivals feel like glorified selfie stations, Movement seems one of the few remaining events that's actually about the music. With a more mature crowd than the average fest, it was easy to get immersed in the sound without trains of discourteous people shoving you during every set or influencers doing influencer things around every corner. And speaking of the music, this compassionate, techno-loving crowd was rewarded with one of the finest lineups on the festival circuit in 2024. An attendee dancing at the 2024 Movement Festival in Detroit.Sylvia Jarrus The word "legendary" is overused these days in music circles, but over on the Movement Stage, attendees were able to witness headlining performances by some true electronic music legends. On Saturday, Solomun closed out the first night of Movement with a masterful two-hour set. Richie Hawtin took over the wet but energetic second night with a special live DEX EFX X0X performance while the big beat pioneer Fatboy Slim sent fans home with a smile with arguably the best set of the weekend. Also featured on this large concrete amphitheater were Dom Dolla, Stacey Pullen, LP Giobbi, Jaguar, Seth Troxler and many more. Fatboy Slim performing at the 2024 Movement Festival in Detroit.Katie Laskowska While the Movement Stage is clearly the "main stage," the Pyramid and Stargate amassed some of the largest crowds of the weekend. The former featured a unique, pyramid-like area right on the Detroit River, creating a large but intimate atmosphere with sets by Honey Dijon, DJ Minx, Kevin Saunderson, Floorplan, Carl Craig and the second Fast & Furious star of the weekend, Idris Elba. It was also the only stage to host curated stage takeovers on all three days of Movement. Elsewhere, the Stargate Stage was designed to feel like a block party inside the festival. With a long but narrow dancefloor next to the Michigan Labor Legacy Monument (should-be sci-fi movie prop), this stage had festival-goers the closest to the streets of Detroit with scenic views of the city. Chris Lake, Jayda G, Skream, Channel Tres, Masters at Work and Gorgon City had Stargate consistently overflowing into the festival grounds all weekend long. In a dark, damp corner beneath the festival's grounds, the Underground Stage delivered the heaviest sounds of the festival. Despite chilly weather above ground, shoehorned bodies in motion raised the temperature and enhanced the warehouse-ready sounds of Julia Govor, Speedy J, 999999999, Skin On Skin and EDM.com Class of 2023 star Indira Paganotto. The Waterfront Stage is where attendees could find most of them. Nestled right next to the river, this stage featured experimental bass from Claude VonStroke's alter-ego, Barclay Crenshaw, hours of drum & bass from Goldie, Special Request and more during the "30 Years of Metalheadz" stage takeover; and even hip-hop from Detroit native Tee Grizzley and hip-hop icon Ludacris. Dedicated to the birthplace of techno, the Detroit Stage featured a lineup comprising entirely artists from the Motor City. Fans here got to experience the sounds of Detroit by virtue of performances from Huey Mnemonic, Terrence Parker, DJ Cent, Fabiola, DJ 3000, DJ Psycho and more. Ludacris performing at the 2024 Movement Festival in Detroit.Katie Laskowska VIP ticket-holders were treated to elevated amenities at Movement Festival 2024, including a separate entrance that led you to a VIP section with a pop-up stage, various programming and exclusive vantage points overlooking the mainstage. It was a stellar option for fans looking for a more seamless and easygoing festival experience as the VIP section offered private bathrooms, a route through the back of Movement that wasn't surrounded by large crowds, and plenty of places to sit comfortably. About halfway through the second night of Movement, downtown Detroit got battered by severe thunderstorms, which caused the festival to evacuate and shut down. The gates opened back up around 10pm and organizers were able to keep the party going an extra half-hour past the scheduled close time. While the delay unfortunately led to some musical cancellations, Movement's organizers made it up in a huge way. All single-day Sunday ticket holders were granted free access to Monday's festivities in an effort to make up for the lost portion of the second night of the weekend. HEADS UP Sunday Pass Holders! As a show of our appreciation for your patience and overwhelming support during yesterday's severe weather evacuation, we are excited to offer all Sunday pass holders free entry for TODAY! 🙌 1/1 pic.twitter.com/6z9VckMKMe — Movement Detroit (@MovementDetroit) May 27, 2024 In addition to the music, Movement offered some art exhibits for fans to take in. Once again, the "Respect the Architects" exhibit was displayed in the old home of the Underground Stage beneath Hart Plaza, displaying portraits and biographies of many of the pioneering artists that helped techno become the international sensation it is today. As the sounds of Movement reverberated around you, it was a surreal experience to stroll between sets and learn about these historic artists while your feet were on the hallowed grounds of one of its most iconic stages. This combination of rich history and modern-day performers was the ideal way to understand just how much Detroit has influenced the music industry. You can learn more about Movement here. Cercle announces the world’s first nomad concert structure
Cercle announces a new era in live touring entertainment – the world’s first nomad concert structure of its kind. Cercle Odyssey is where music, technology, and innovation converge to create an unforgettable journey for audiences around the globe. The groundbreaking concept redefines the conventional concert format, transcending boundaries and limitations to deliver an immersive and multisensory journey. “My current obsession is to create the shortest connection between the music played by the artist, the video narrative that we will present live on the screens and the audience’s emotions. I want to connect these 3 things together at the deepest level and I believe this is still underdeveloped in the entertainment industry. If, by the end of a Cercle Odyssey show, I see people on the dance floor literally moved to tears, then I will consider it a success.” Derek Barbolla (Cercle founder and Creative Director) Cercle Odyssey redefines the concert experience by intimately blending live music with a new type of visual storytelling within a 360° projection panorama. This modern odyssey, inspired by the myth of Ulysses offers a multi-dimensional experience: Odyssey comes to each person, provoking that deep feeling of fulfilment upon returning home after a long journey. “Visually, we will keep up and even transcend our very specific and unique Cercle signature. The videos will be real, human and natural. We feel that we need this sort of humanity in the content, in a world where we sometimes feel disconnected from nature, from Earth… We are actually going the opposite way of most of the visuals we currently see in the electronic music scene. Each concert will be completely unique, and will unfold like a living painting.” Derek Barbolla Neels Castillon, globally represented by Ridley Scott Creative Group and co-founder of Motion Palace, will oversee the direction of Cercle Odyssey’s videos, infusing them with his distinct narrative style. The esteemed director is acclaimed for his ability to capture intimate and poetic moments in his films. With a distinctive aesthetic and keen artistic sensitivity, his work explores the human connection with nature and its vast, unexplored landscapes, making him a natural fit to bring Cercle Odyssey’s immersive vision to life. MUSIC AND SCENOGRAPHY In terms of musical programming, Cercle Odyssey will collaborate with artists from various genres and backgrounds. The hallmark of careful musical curation lies in the selection of artists whose compositions seamlessly blend auditory and visual elements. These artists are revered for crafting music that resonates acoustically and paints vivid mental landscapes. The artists who will play at Cercle Odyssey will be revealed later in the year. Cercle’s scenography is a marvel of engineering and imagination, blending cutting-edge technology with sustainable design. The scenography we created for Cercle, in its pure form, serves as a bridge between the event venue and the surrounding world, like a panoramic window onto the planet we inhabit. The monumental doors that comprise Odyssey transport us on a journey between dream and reality, between sky and earth, through space and time. Victor Perrin & Samuel Chatain, RAINBOW, Scenography Studio Central to the technical prowess is the 2300 m² of giant projection screens enveloping the audience. These state-of-the-art screens are 10 to 12 meters (up to 40 feet) high and up to 55 meters (up to 180 feet) long. Inspired by traditional movie screens, they showcase a dynamic array of high-quality images shot in 8K, meticulously synchronized live with the music. What sets Cercle Odyssey apart is not only the technical innovation but also its commitment to sustainability, due to all of the equipment (sound, light, and projectors) being sourced and rented locally. By opting for 29 state-of-the-art projectors instead of traditional LED screens to illuminate the scenography, Cercle eliminates the need to transport a massive load of LED screens. This drastically reduces transportation emissions and energy consumption. The use of projectors also represents a technical achievement. Cercle’s team seamlessly integrates these projectors to create a visually stunning experience that rivals traditional methods, all while maintaining a smaller carbon footprint. NO PHONE POLICY To ensure that every audience member can fully immerse themselves in the experience, phones are strictly forbidden inside the scenography. By disconnecting from digital distractions, attendees can focus solely on the emotive journey unfolding, allowing the music and visuals to transport them to new realms without interruption. This fosters a shared sense of presence and connection, amplifying the collective experience. However, as a parting souvenir, each guest will receive a folder of filmed content from Cercle. The 3-hour back-to-back set from the superstar DJ/producers was cut short on Saturday night after hitting the city’s 10 pm sound curfew. But now fans everywhere can experience the full, uninterrupted event IN 4k. Time for a Digital Detox? Anyma May Ban Phones at His Shows
Anyma may soon crack down on the rave community's newest drug of choice: the smartphone. It might sound like heresy, but excessive smartphone usage is one of today's most contentious flashpoints in the global electronic dance music scene. And Anyma's influential Afterlife brand, whose events regularly go viral due to their mind-bending visual spectacles, is often the focus of the conversation. The superstar DJ and producer has now taken to social media to test the waters of a no-phone policy at his events. Polling his followers, Anyma shared two comments on his own Instagram post: "YES, BAN PHONES" and "NO, ALLOW PHONES." At the time of this article's publication, the former comment has 9,388 likes compared to 1,823 for the latter. Anyma's remarks are timely as the pitfalls of gratuitous smartphone usage continue to take shape in the form of new policies and privacy concerns, the likes of which are nascent but becoming more prevalent by the day. While some argue that attendees should be free to use their devices as they please, others bemoan them for provoking a sense of trepidation in those who don't want to be documented. The issue isn't endemic to crowds. A number of prominent dance music artists and venues have taken concerted action, like MEDUZA and James Hype, who in late-2023 launched a campaign to "preserve the authenticity" of club culture by denouncing excessive recording at their co-branded events. Popular electronic music trio Wavedash also discouraged smartphone use by asking fans attending their tour to cover their cameras with stickers blazoning the phrase, "Social media? No thanks." Meanwhile, renowned DJ and festival organizer Damian Lazarus recently announced a groundbreaking no-phone policy for his summer residency at the famed Hï Ibiza venue, establishing a new precedent on the fabled Spanish party island. And across the Atlantic, the owners of Miami's iconic Club Space are laying the groundwork for their first-ever no-phone event. Whether or not Anyma plans to follow suit remains to be seen, but it's extremely implausible, at least on a macro scale. He could instate a no-phone policy on a limited basis, but a comprehensive ban would likely throttle the virality of his visuals—the pièce de résistance of his concerts—and atrophy his brand's authority in the live music space. Let’s Talk About Gina Breeze
Gina Breeze is a rising star in the underground house and techno scene. She blends influences from Chicago, New York, and the UK club scenes. Based in Manchester, Breeze has become a mainstay at prominent queer parties and events like HomoElectric, HomoBloc, and underground raves throughout the city. Her musical journey began in the late 2000s, when she was exposed to the booming electronic music culture in Yorkshire through friends and local clubs like SpeedQueen. After honing her DJ skills spinning a mix of trance, house, and bassline/garage, Breeze pursued formal music production training in Sheffield before making the move to Manchester. The city’s rich musical heritage and melting pot of styles left an indelible mark on Breeze’s sound. As a resident DJ for the HomoElectric crew, she experimented with more leftfield and eclectic sounds, shaping the percussive, groove-driven house and techno that has become her signature. Breeze’s burgeoning production talents recently landed her a release on Peggy Gou’s acclaimed Gudu Records compilation ‘Gudu & Friends Vol. 2.‘ We sat down with the fast-rising DJ/producer to discuss her musical roots, developing her unique sound, experiences in Manchester’s dance music underground, and what the future holds. What was your experience like studying music production in Sheffield, and how did that shape your sound? The course I did in Sheffield was the start of my production journey. It was a pretty intense 6 month course working in Logic & also looking at songwriting, live elements, arrangement. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. It was the start of my sound evolving, which it still is today. How would you describe your signature sound, and what influences have played a role in shaping it? Musically I’ve been influenced by New York & Chicago sounds. Since buying my first drum machine, layering tom rhythms have been the backbone to a lot of my tracks. I love percussion & laying down the beat is one of my favorite parts. SpeedQueen (my first residency in Leeds) was a huge part of my story & that kind of classic house music will always hold a special place in my heart. I feel that’s why I’m a sucker for a diva vocal or pumping bassline. Can you tell us about the process of blending influences from different genres and cultures into your productions? I’ve been influenced by the places I grew up clubbing. Although I’m not really a trancehead now, all the experiences play a part. I feel I take inspiration from the scenes in Leeds & Sheffield massively. I never went to Niche, but we always listened to speed garage/bassline music. It was more of a guilty pleasure but I hear that kind of bass sound is something I will lean towards, even now. As someone based in Manchester, how has the city’s rich musical history and rave culture influenced your work? When I moved from Yorkshire to Manchester, my eyes were opened further in terms of music & DJing as a whole. I met Luke Unabomber & started playing for HomoElectric. I was hearing a lot of left-field music, hearing a lot more sets while really went on more of a musical journey. It was totally different to the clubs I was used to – where everything would be pretty much high energy all night. I started playing radio shows & longer sets where I could spread my wings a bit more creatively. I was also around a lot more creative minds /Artists. This melting pot of all things musical has been a driving force in everything I do today. You’ve been a resident at several prominent events and venues. Can you share some highlights from your residencies? SpeedQueen is where my journey started as a DJ so it will always hold a special place in my heart. When I moved to Manchester, my next home was (and still is) with HomoElectric. I feel I have really grown as an artist since being a resident here. I can test out new material and go off-piste with different sounds. It’s also been great to play events like HomoBloc, queer parties on a massive scale at Mayfield Depot. It’s completely different to playing places like Hidden, and these underground basement-type raves but very cool all the same. How do you approach crafting a captivating live set or DJ performance? I think of each set as a new journey. I try to research the venue/artists playing on the same lineup where I can. I want to complement to next artist & for the night to have the right flow. I feel the warm-up set is a dying craft & so important for the energy of the whole night. Being a resident at the places I mentioned before I think gives you real necessary experience on how to warm up a room. It’s essential not to bang it out from 10 pm. I do love fast music & enjoy playing at higher tempos but I think the build of a warm-up set can make or break the night. If I’m warming up I’m very aware of this & see the warm-up as big of a deal as the main set. Can you walk us through your production process and the various elements you consider when creating a track? Since buying my first drum machine this has usually been the starting point & backbone to a lot of my tracks. My Roland TR8-S is a part of my studio I couldn’t live without. I love percussion & laying down the beat is one of my favorite parts. Getting hands-on is a big part for me & getting the groove just right before adding the other elements. I feel I can bounce off the rhythm and percussion which can inspire the rest of the track. Gina Breeze How do you feel your sound has evolved over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future? I think my sound has evolved a lot since I put out my first E.P. (2015) you can usually hear my New York / Chicago influences in my music. Think this goes back to the drums. Musically I just want to keep things fresh & exciting. I’m working on an album at the moment so this is a chance to stretch my creative muscles & make some more melodic/down tempo tracks. I love to collaborate and am lucky to have worked with some incredible vocalists over the years. I would love to see more of that in the future. As a female artist in a male-dominated industry, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them? I feel I’m been fortunate to work with a real mix of male/female promoters, agents over the years. The industry can be rough, I think now more than ever. There are so many DJs, especially after lockdown. It can be hard to rise above the noise. For me I just try to stay authentic, keep going in my own lane & work with as many females in the industry as possible. Who are some artists or producers that have particularly inspired you or that you admire? I am inspired by artists like KiNK & Miss Kittin, I would love to incorporate live elements into my DJ sets eventually & KiNK is just the absolute master. It is also amazing to see female artists at the forefront of the electronic scene, Peggy Gou of course, Blessed Madonna & Honey Dijon. I have been a big fan of The Blessed Madonna since seeing her years ago at the Warehouse Project. I also love Cinthie & saw her play recently at Night Tales in London. She really is a class act. How do you balance the creative and business aspects of your career as a DJ and producer? I think this balance is quite difficult, the business side has never really been one of my strongest points but I am much better now than when I started. The business side comes second, always. I need to remind myself of that sometimes. Music first, should keep the creative juices flowing rather than trying to chase numbers. Can you share any exciting projects or collaborations you have in the works? I am sketching ideas for an album at the minute which I’m really excited about. Also working on a new E.P for a very exciting label. More info to come on that soon! Can you tell us about the track you have on the Gudu & Friends Vol. 2 compilation? What was the inspiration or concept behind it? Rebound started after a fun jam session with the Prophet synth. It’s quite a stripped-back track but has that real euphoric / summer vibe when the chords kick in. I added the ‘rhythm’ vocal, roughed that up a bit, and layered the percussion. The Prophet riff is just the one, this drives the whole track. How did the opportunity to release on Peggy Gou’s Gudu label come about, and what has that experience been like so far? I managed to get my hands on the A&R details for Gudu after making some music specifically for the label. I really wanted to be a part of the Gudu family & can honestly say, the experience has been so enjoyable. The label is run really well, great communication & I got the opportunity to do Guest Mix for the Gudu Mix Series on Apple Music. It’s great to be a part of this compilation, I feel it has a diverse mix of artists & I’m a big fan of all of them! The comp is killer! What are some of your favorite venues or festivals to perform at, and why? One of my favorite festivals I played at is Wildwood Disco in Cambridge. I closed the main stage after Erol Alkan & I feel played one of the best sets Ive ever played. Everything just slotted in right that day, the sun was setting as Erol played, and the lighting for the stage was so trippy & bounced off the trees. It was honestly magical. I’m playing there again this year on my birthday actually & cannot wait! Of course, there’s Love International Festival which has been a favourite for years, the boat parties & Barbarellas. I played Barbarellas for the first time last year for Classic at Defected. That club is very special, especially the sunrise sets. Had some incredible moments there. I think in terms of clubs, as cliche as it is Fabric is just up there & is one of my favorites. I supported Eats everything there and the sound in room two is just lush. The way the DJ booth is positioned in that room just gives you great energy and connection with the crowd. Love it there. The Cause London too, is amazing. Adonis parties are just another level there now. Gina Breeze How important of a role does social media play in your career as an artist, and how do you approach building and engaging with your online following? Social media is a blessing & a curse. I would love to be off all social media as I feel it drains me & can have a negative effect on me mentally. However, I am able to reach different demographics through the power of social media & have more of a reach. I don’t have a massive amount of followers but what I do have has grown organically over the years. I should probably put more time into growing my followers but that’s not why I came into the music industry. I want to create, move people & create lasting memories. I want my content to be real, release, mixes real-life stuff Rather than super contrived and scheduled. Beyond music, what other interests or passions do you have that influence your artistry? I love to travel, this can be the hard part when flying solo. I try to take inspiration from all the places I’m booked to play at. Sound bytes, the feel of certain places, I want to channel this into the music. I’m looking to get more of a portable sampler actually for when I’m on the road to sketch out ideas in the moment. As our conversation winds down, it’s clear that Gina Breeze is an artist firmly rooted in the rich musical traditions that shaped her. She also consistently pushes her sound forward in exciting new directions. Her release on Peggy Gou’s Gudu Records has given Breeze’s talents a bigger platform, but she remains grounded in the underground scenes and queer party crews that gave her a start. As she puts it, “I want to create, move people & create lasting memories.” With her passion, talent, and authentic approach, she’s well on her way. What happened to Fred again.. and Skrillex b2b ravein San Francisco?
The highly anticipated “rave” in San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza featuring superstar DJs Fred Again.. and Skrillex came to an abrupt halt on Saturday night after the duo hit the city’s 10 p.m. sound curfew. The English DJ and producer Fred Again.. and his American counterpart Skrillex were in the middle of a song when the audio system was shut off due to the curfew. Though the music stopped, the pair remained on stage for several minutes afterwards, waving to the massive crowd of an estimated 25,000 fans to provide a proper send-off. The show was billed as a chance for Fred Again.. and Skrillex to test out new music they had worked on during a recent trip to Mexico. Some attendees traveled from out of town for the rare performance, which sold out shortly after being announced last week. “This doesn’t feel like San Francisco anymore,” Skrillex, a former SF resident, remarked during the set. “I think we transported somewhere else.” The abrupt ending capped an evening that saw the pair attempt to recreate the electric energy of an underground rave on a massive scale in downtown San Francisco. It was the latest in a series of outdoor dance music events hoping to reinvigorate the city’s nightlife as it recovers from the pandemic. Mayor London Breed has been a supporter of bringing more nightlife and entertainment back to central San Francisco. Her administration is implementing state legislation to allow outdoor alcoholic beverage areas and is providing grants to nightlife businesses. James Hype Announces ‘Get Closer UK Tour’
Over the past few years, James Hype has been establishing himself as one of the most skilled DJs in the world performing incredibly complicated mixes in front of thousands upon thousands of people. But now he wants to bring his talents to smaller venues with a ‘Get Closer UK Tour’ where he wants to go to venues across the UK with capacities of less than 600 people. In the past year alone, James Hype has been amazing crowds at some massive events such as Amsterdam Music Festival, EDC Mexico and has played at some of the UK’s greatest venues like Drumsheds, Warehouse Project and many more. He also found himself storming into the Official UK Top 40 with his 2022 track ‘Ferrari’ and has recently released the infectious ‘Drums’ with Kim Petras that has been blasting out in clubs across the world. It’s no secret that clubs in the UK have been struggling ever since the nightmare that was COVID as the cost of living has risen to the point where people can’t afford to go out. With this, many clubs have had to shut down which is slowly killing off the once thriving nightlife that the UK had which is an awful thing to be happening. James Hype is no stranger to doing ‘Get Closer’ DJ sets which offer fans the opportunity to see his skills up close and in a much more personal space. Now with this new plan for a ‘Get Closer UK Tour’, he has said he is “trying to do something for the people” of the country that he is from. Doing this tour is not only something for the fans but will also support the small venues that have been suffering in these hard times. No venues have been announced yet, but with him aiming to go to venues that most other DJ’s wont, keep an eye out for when dates start getting announced.

Markus Schulz Unites With Sir Ivan for Anthemic Track, "Turn! Turn! Turn!"
In a rallying cry for worldwide peace, German trance icon Markus Schulz has teamed up with electronic dance recording artist and philanthropist Sir Ivan for a new track, "Turn! Turn! Turn!." Out via Schulz's very own Coldharbour Recordings in collaboration with Black Hole Recordings, "Turn! Turn! Turn! reimagines the 1965 song of the same name by illustrious rock band The Byrds. The song fits well into the discography of Sir Ivan, who has become known for his covers of peace- and anti-war songs from the 1960s and early 1970s. Boasting a catalog that spans two decades, he has donated all of the net proceeds from his music to his non-profit, The Peaceman Foundation, which he launched back in 2005 to help combat PTSD. As "Turn! Turn! Turn!" kicks off, listeners are immediately engulfed in Schulz’s timeless trance production. Sir Ivan's vocals help lead the way towards a soaring drop, which explodes with the help of infectious synths and a bassline as powerful as the song's message. "In a world overshadowed by discord and unrest, the enduring message of hope can still resonate loudly: It's not too late for peace," Schulz said. "This powerful sentiment drew me to this song, compelling me to be a part of its narrative. In a landscape where division seems to dominate, the reminder that peace is still within reach is not only timely but paramount. Through the gift of our bond with music, we have the opportunity to amplify this message." "My hope is that the contagious track Markus Schulz created will spread the lyrical message of peace throughout dancefloors all over the world and inspire its listeners to love one another," Sir Ivan added. Released 8 Years Ago: Otto Knows & Avicii – Back Where I Belong
On June 3, 2016, childhood friends and electronic dance music prodigies Otto Knows and Avicii released their long-awaited collaboration, ‘Back Where I Belong’. This track marked a significant moment in their careers, as it brought together two artists who had known each other since their school days and shared a deep passion for music and DJing. Their friendship blossomed as both artists rose to prominence in the EDM scene, with Avicii gaining international fame with ‘Levels’ and Otto Knows making waves with ‘Million Voices’. At the peak of their careers, they decided to join forces in the studio, resulting in ‘Back Where I Belong’, a track that beautifully melded their individual styles into a harmonious and uplifting anthem. Prior to this collaboration, Otto Knows had already made a name for himself with hits like ‘Parachute’, ‘Can’t Stop Drinking About You’, and ‘Next To You’. His talents in the studio translated seamlessly into his live performances, allowing him to grace some of the world’s most renowned stages, including Tomorrowland, Ushuaia Ibiza, and London’s Alexandra Palace. Avicii, known to the world as Tim Bergling, was a superstar in the EDM world, with millions of records sold and billions of streams. Despite his shy nature and struggles with life on the road, Avicii‘s music left an indelible mark on the industry. His chart-topping hits like ‘Levels’ and ‘Wake Me Up’ catapulted him to global stardom, but also highlighted the pressures he faced as a leading figure in dance music. The release of ‘Back Where I Belong’ was a celebration of their friendship and shared musical journey. Tragically, Avicii‘s death on April 20, 2018, sent shockwaves through the music industry, and his absence is still profoundly felt today. This collaboration stands as a testament to their creative synergy and the lasting impact they have had on the world of electronic dance music.
