  3. Dance Mutha · Mike Dunn Presents MD III – Tracks From The Beginning Vol 1 (Clips) Mike Dunn is a pivotal house artist who brought his own famously raw and stripped-back style combined with infectious hip-hop elements. He is behind plenty of well-known anthems, most famously ‘Dance You Mutha’ and ‘God Made Me Phunky’, and founded Dance Mutha in 1988. It released music by MD Connection, Gershon Jackson and I-ROC-T, while Dunn also co-founded seminal acid labels Warehouse Records and Muzique Records which played a key role in the development of Chicago and acid house. Dunn has continued to produce over the ensuing four decades and has landed on the likes of Defected, Nu-Groove, Classic, Trax and many more. The Dance Mutha label’s relaunch has been partly inspired by Dunn’s discovery of a raft of ‘lost’ unreleased masters from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It’s these tracks that provide the jumping-off point with this new release. ’43:31′ is the first out of the blocks and brings prickly acid texture to raw analogue drums. Slapping hits add extra bite to this most stripped-back and effective slice of pure warehouse music. Then come the snappy snares and deep bass of ‘Acid Feet (Phaze 1)’. This spare, impactful cut is riddled with shapeshifting acid and caustic synth textures that bring the rugged drums to life. Last of all, the excellent ‘Time Machine’ will take you back to the dark, delirious and delicious days of the earliest acid house with its wonky 303s burrowing deep into the night next to coarse claps and ice-cold hits. 4. Streaming transformed the music industry, sending widely accepted measures of success like radio plays and national charts wayward. With more artists releasing music in a market that continues to grow increasingly complex and demanding, artist-friendly and data-driven distributor and artist services platform Amuse teamed up with MIDiA Research to conduct a study on what sustainable success looks like in 2024 – from the artist’s point of view. “We started tracking the growth of the independent and DIY movement already in 2019 together with MIDiA, and are happy to announce our third deep dive into the market. Using MIDiA’s fifth annual survey of global independent music creators, along with in-depth interviews with artists and secondary research on longevity and success, we were able to re-evaluate what success looks like for the modern-day music artist,” explains Sofia Green, Director of Communications at Amuse. “We hope to shed light on what artists themselves consider success metrics today, as well as what type of partners they prefer to build their careers.” Ultimately, the report finds that for artists, success boils down to five universal career goals: sustainability, recognition, progression, longevity, and legacy. In 2023, more artists than ever sought to build a career out of making music, yet less than 5% were signed to a label. Post-label artists were the fastest growing segment–pointing to the need for redefined metrics for success, independent of the vested interests of the industry machine. This push and pull of commercial success versus artists’ creative fulfilment and achievement of their creative goals has led to a relentless “always on” cycle. While current industry success metrics are often short-term goals attached to organizations rather than individual artists, artists end up in a demanding systemic cycle. For instance, labels and publishers expect a quick return on investment following a new release. With more music being distributed than ever before, artists feel pressure to release more music more often to keep up, all while promoting it on social media and engaging with their fans. With this workload, they are often left with little to no time to focus on developing their craft in order to attain their own definitions of creative success. Given these conflicting interests, it is no surprise that 95.5% of artists are artist-direct, meaning they release their music independently through a distributor or artist platform. When asked about their ideal partners, artists (full-time professionals as well as music creators in general) preferred to work with distributors with label services, followed by self-serve platforms, and independent labels. Only 6% picked major labels. “Only one out of five artists in the survey consider being signed by a record label as a metric of success, which represents a big shift in the industry. We see this on a daily basis as we work with breaking talent who are looking for a modern partner, designed for today’s landscape,” says John Dahlbäck, Head of A&R at Amuse. “Amuse presents a powerful alternative to the traditional industry. Our flexible funding and artist services support the unique and multi-faceted goals of success held by artists, while letting them remain in charge of their masters and creative freedom.” “Over the past decade, the music industry’s approach to talent discovery, marketing, and artist careers has become too data obsessed, near sighted, and damaging to the industry’s lifeblood. Artists are being sold short and, in turn, this has created a dysfunctional creative-commercial ecosystem.” – Keith Jopling, Consulting Director, MIDiA Research Read the full report from Amuse and MIDiA Research at LINK. 8. Fedele‘s great new album “Depth Of Being” is out now on his old label Obscura. It’s his first solo record since leaving Agents Of Time three years ago. It’s an exciting change in his sound. The “Depth Of Being” album has 11 songs that are sure to be heard all over the world. By remixing Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” FEDELE made a big step forward on his solo career. The song became a worldwide hit and got a lot of support from other artists. He’s also put out music on Ellum Audio, Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, Mind Against’s “HABITAT,” and more. He’s also remixed songs by Diplo, Stephan Bodzin, Mattia Trani, and other artists. Fedele is known for his signature sound, but this great new album takes that sound in a stylish new direction. It also explores more experimental sound elements with singing, breaks, snappy tech, and beautiful, emotional melodies. “Departure,” the first song on the record, is a beautiful, slow-paced synthscape with soft beats. “There’s Only One ft. Mickael Karkousse,” the second song, has snappy hits, languid bass, dark and twisted vocals, and an amazing music video to go with it! The hit song “Your Eyes” has a fast-paced and smooth beat with rich melodies and vocoder vocals that give it a futuristic soulful vibe. “Waiting For The Night ft. Lvdovica” is full of smooth cosmic arpeggios and enticing vocals that bring it to life. Along with well-designed grooves, “Beyond Borders” layers hypnotic and progressive chord sequences. “Tangent” is a punchy and techno-leaning track for the peak time, with fantastically fizzing synth textures. And “Depth Of Our Love” locks you into a deep rolling groove, followed by a flawless outro that makes you want more. This is a brave and masterful record from this important underground pioneer. 13. THMPSN has released a new single, "Nicole Aniston," a mesmerizing dive into the murkiest depths of phonk music. With deep, stentorian bass, the woozy banger is a guiding light for the future of "drift phonk," a blossoming sub-genre of electronic music that captures the white-knuckle intensity of street racing and drifting culture through sound. It's named after the adult film star Nicole Aniston, who features with an eerie soliloquy about the elusive journey to self-acceptance. Amidst the song's dark and distorted soundscapes, Aniston's dulcet voice offers an almost meditative respite. "Self-healing can occur in a moment," she purrs. "It doesn't need to be a lifelong pursuit. And because there is no end, there's no finish line. There's no race. There's no competition." The track, a collaboration with Memphis hip-hop vet Kingpin Skinny Pimp, is the latest masterstroke from the Aussie electronic music producer, who is also an esteemed violinist. THMPSN has appeared as a lecturer at the French Conservatory of Music and played in orchestras at Prague's legendary Dvořák Hall and the opening of the Australian embassy in Berlin. "Nicole Aniston" arrives alongside an official music video, which features Aniston herself as she hypnotizes THMPSN in a reiki session. 15. In today's world, where authenticity often takes a backseat to mirror-maze social media manipulation, Wreckno's unapologetic embrace of their identity has helped carve out a space for LGBTQ artists to thrive. An outspoken advocate of LGBTQ rights, the EDM.com Class of 2022 star is going scorched earth—like they do every Pride Month—after releasing a new single, "Party Girl." Wreckno's braggadocious bars flow like honey down a spoon, providing the rhythmic intravenous drip for this slice of dancefloor euphoria. A Pride anthem through and through, the audacious hip-house banger will appear on a new EP this summer by way of the venerable Helix Records. The triple-threat DJ, producer and rapper is now gearing up to debut their very own Pride event, "Wreckno's Big Gay Soirée," in Denver. Scheduled for June 20th, the summer bash will feature performances by Wreckno, Kaleena Zanders, So Sus, Ava Sparks and a special guest as well as drag performances from Aja and LaLa Ri of RuPaul's Drag Race. Tickets are on sale now. But before then, read on to discover the songs and artists that continue to inspire Wreckno, in their own words. Brooke Candy — "Das Me"Brooke Candy was the first artist I discovered that was reclaiming homophobic slurs and making them badass to identify with. This song awakened something in me as a teenager that told me, “You can be a badass out loud and proud queer person without shame!” Mykki Blanco — "Haze.Boogie.Life"Mykki Blanco is another artist from my teen Tumblr years that really helped shape what I wanted to exude as an artist. Mykki’s sharp lyricism and wit always spoke to me as well as their iconic fashion sense. Ashnikko — "Working Bitch"I discovered Ashnikko through the Internet just before she popped off in 2020. I remember feeling so enamored with the cadence of her voice and her cheeky punchlines. She is everything! Ethel Cain — "Hard Times"In the last year I have become absolutely obsessed with Ethel Cain. While you don’t normally hear soft and beautiful sad songs from the Wreckno project, I am beyond inspired by her work and others that exist in that realm of music. Lady Gaga — "Alice"What can I say about Gaga. She is everything to me. She is why I wanted to become a performer! I lost touch with the Little Monster in me while I focused on EDM for a long time. When she released her album Chromatica, I found my way back. This opening track of the album took me back to that teenager that was jumping around my bedroom doing her choreography, and reminded me why I got into music. I love her so much! FLETCHER — "Forever (SOPHIE Remix)"SOPHIE is such an inspiration to me when it comes to production. I have a photo of her hanging in my studio to remind me of the LGBTQ trailblazers that have come before me, that left such a special impact on music. I think of her whenever I feel like I’m not good enough to make memorable music. We love and miss you SOPHIE. Moore Kismet & Pauline Herr — "You Should Run"Moore Kismet is one of my favorite LGBTQ+ acts in music. Not only do they make incredible tunes, but they’re an angel of a human. I’m stoked to say we have a track dropping at the end of Pride Month too! Cakes da Killa — "Don Dada"Cakes da Killa is another queer rapper I grew up adoring. His flow, wit, cadence and style speak for themselves. I got to be on a track with him and Mija last year and it was a dream come true! Chase Icon — "Like Me"What can I say about Chase Icon. She's just that girl! I’ve been obsessed with her witty lyrics and smooth glossy vocals ever since she went from Twitter celeb to pop girlie. Chase Iconic SuperSonic! Chappel Roan — "Femininomenon"Last but definitely not least, it’s 2024’s IT GIRL, Chappel Roan! I first heard her debut album at the beginning of this year, and as soon as this track started I was hooked. “Hit it like Rumpapapum, get it hot like papa John!” I was obsessed with that lyric! I would rap that. She is everything. Superstar. 17. After over a decade since Insomniac last hosted a major festival in the Chicago area, Beyond Wonderland made a magical debut in The Windy City over the weekend of June 1-2. Despite some challenging weather, the two-day wonderland of sound and spectacle captivated attendees with an immersive, storybook-inspired atmosphere and stellar lineup. The weather didn’t help, but the festival was amazing nonetheless As a longtime lover of dance music festivals, I made my way down the rabbit hole into Beyond‘s whimsical world brimming with excitement. The picturesque Chicago skyline provided a picture-perfect backdrop as I approached the festival grounds on Northerly Island. While grey clouds loomed overhead on Saturday, the energy was palpable as costumed performers and vibrant decor set an enchanting tone. The weather took an unfortunate turn as a steady rain fell for much of Saturday, making the grounds quite muddy. However, the crowd’s vibrant spirit was not to be dampened. Donning rain ponchos and embracing the elements, attendees danced joyfully in the mud, transforming sections into makeshift mud pits. The atmosphere embodied the free-spirited essence of festival culture as people came together through adversity. Stages: Caterpillar’s Garden, Queen’s Domain and Cheshire Woods Musically, the diverse lineup spanning house, techno, dubstep, and more offered an embarrassment of riches. I spent a good portion of the weekend at the Caterpillar’s Garden, a whimsical tent stage hosted by Insomniac’s labels. The intimate, circus-themed surroundings cultivated a carnival-like atmosphere as dancers went wild for performances from Insomniac heavy-hitters like SIDEPIECE, John Summit, and Noizu. The crowd’s contagious enthusiasm made it impossible not to get swept up in the revelry. The Main Stage at Queen’s Domain featured massive headlining performances that demonstrated why Kaskade and Tiësto remain titans of the scene. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the two legends had the entire crowd entranced, with Kaskade’s uplifting melodies and Tiësto’s big room grandeur providing escapism from the elements. The elevated bleachers offered a welcome respite to enjoy the spectacle from an optimal vantage point. Beyond Wonderland Chicago mainstage The house and techno contingent was also well-represented, with GRAMMY winners like Benny Benassi and Chicago legend Felix Da Housecat delivering energetic sets. The Cheshire Woods stage, with its serpentine twists of LED panels and projection-mapped trees, made for a surreal atmosphere, especially during RL Grime’s earth-shaking trap throwdown on Sunday. While the weather was far from perfect, I was impressed by the festival’s amenities and organization. The VIP areas offered a comfortable home base, with the Queen’s Domain VIP boasting two stories for premium views. Lines for security and re-entry were also fairly efficient despite the crowd size. The food truck options provided solid variety as well. My main comment would be that the muddy conditions posed some access challenges those with mobility issues, as portions of the grounds became quite treacherous. But such is the risk of an outdoor event in unpredictable Chicago springtime weather. Overall, most attendees embraced the situation with a plucky festival spirit. 2025 edition is already on track Despite the meteorological hiccups, Beyond Wonderland’s Chicago debut demonstrated why Insomniac’s wildly immersive festival brand continues to resonate. The whimsical, Alice-inspired setting truly did feel like falling down a psychedelic rabbit hole into a vibrant other-world – one soundtracked by the biggest names in dance music. With tickets for 2025 already on sale, Beyond seems poised to become a Windy City staple for years to come. If you attended Beyond Wonderland Chicago, I’d love to hear about your favorite moments or suggestions for 2025 in the comments! For those who missed it, the pre-sale $9.99 deposit offer for next year’s edition ends June 7th at 11:59 pm CT. 18. Benny Benassi's "Cinema" soundtracked a generation's romantic nights on the town. Autograf have now dusted it off, draping the classic in a captivating Afro-house cloak for a stunning Afro-house remix. The head-over-heels anthem sheds its electro skin for haunting Afro-house grooves, transforming the dancefloor into a moonlight-drenched dreamscape. The infectious energy of the original "Cinema" is replaced by a slow burn, a smoky haze of desire blanketed by a hypnotic drumbeat. A love letter to the alluring mystery of another person, the lyricism of "Cinema," once celebratory, becomes a whispered confession in Autograf's spellbinding soundscapes. "I could watch you for a lifetime / You're my favorite movie," croons Gary Go's familiar voice, not in the throes of party mania, but with the quiet intensity of someone entranced. The new remix is a testament to the time-tested artistry of the Autograf duo, who managed to take a generational anthem and breathe into it a profound intimacy, proving that even the most well-worn grooves can enkindle new emotions when manipulated by master craftsmen. 19. In early 2024, the dance music world was shaken by the news of a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis from Kasablanca's Micky. But in true Kasablanca fashion, the duo has turned this profound challenge into a source of creative strength with their latest release, "Terminal Feeling." Micky Kasablanca, one half of the duo, had to abruptly cancel several tour dates earlier this year following emergency surgery and "aggressive" chemotherapy. But even in the face of adversity, their spirit remained unbroken, and their latest release, "Terminal Feeling," is no better evidence. There's no better display of Kasablanca's current status as a "triple threat" in the scene. Their abilities as live musicians, producers and vocalists have prepared them for this moment to bring it all together with a powerful message of resilience. Imbued with the weight of their recent experiences, the track is a masterful blend of waning, euphoric techno leads and ethereal vocals, drawing us into a soundscape that's both haunting and invigorating. Out now on Anjunabeats, the song features a poignant narrative arc, using its ethereal vocals to delve into the complexities of fighting an illness while finding hope and strength in the creative process. It's a powerful reminder of Kasablanca's ability to transform personal struggles into universal messages made for the dancefloor. 20. In an era where time slips through our fingers like sand, Kasbo's new album, The Learning of Urgency, is a timely message to pause. Kasbo's third LP is his most reflective work to date, a testament to a profound shift in perspective. After grappling with stress-induced hearing loss in 2019, he took a four-year hiatus to craft an album that rejects the pervasive "rise and grind" mentality of today’s society. "I feel that it's just a product of the internet, and it being so readily available for us at all times," Kasbo tells EDM.com. "The communication of culture overall is so fast, and through that things get old quickly. That in turn forces everyone to keep producing the next new thing." "For me the album became a tool in slowing down and I think musically you can see it be reflected at a few different points," he continues. "Some sections might linger for a bit longer, give you time to breathe, or just build this big tension that give you this release and feeling of your shoulders finally being able to come down." The titular track, "The Learning of Urgency," ruminates on societal pressures to constantly do more, its contemplative nature encouraging us to slow down and savor the present. Dan Whitlam’s words, intertwined with melancholic melodies, evoke a sense of tranquility and introspection, making it the perfect cornerstone to an album rooted in mindfulness. In "Resenären," Kasbo takes us on a seven-minute odyssey through progressive house with invigorating beats that pulse like a heartbeat at rest and then in motion. This track showcases his fascination with euphoric club music, which emerged from his deep dive into DJing during his time away from touring. The journey unfolds with layers of sound that evoke both a sense of nostalgia and forward momentum, capturing the essence of dance music’s power to unify and elevate. Elsewhere, "Atlantis" sees Kasbo and Shallou creating sonics for a serene underwater soundscape. The track's shimmering synths and gentle rhythms mimic the ebb and flow of waves, offering a sonic refuge from the chaos above. It’s a meditation on finding peace and clarity beneath the surface of daily life, urging us to dive deep into moments of introspection and calm. Throughout The Learning of Urgency, Kasbo masterfully intertwines his personal journey with universal themes, ultimately creating a narrative that speaks to the pressures of modern life. Through its ethereal soundscapes and pensive songwrting, he leaves us with a gentle reminder to pause, breathe and find beauty in the stillness. "I don't necessarily think I'm going to solve anyone's issue in dealing with this 'hurry sickness' but I think music can be a tool in slowing down," he adds. "It is for me at least." 22. The world of melodic house and techno is always evolving. New artists are continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with emotive soundscapes and groove-laden rhythms. Emerging from the prolific Swedish dance music scene, the duo of TMPST and Phil Odd have crafted a genuine sonic gem with their latest single “Curiosity.” Released on the esteemed Hathor label, “Curiosity” shines as a brilliant example of the duo’s production talents. The song kicks in with the tactile, organic percussions. They kick the track into gear to the rich, warm synthesizer tones. You’ll feel the ebb and flow throughout with the unmistakable human touch that makes the instrumental elements come alive. But what truly sets “Curiosity” apart is the spellbinding Swahili vocals. It floats over the chord progressions. While the lyrics themselves are shrouded in mystery for those unfamiliar with the language, the melodies and impassioned performances imbue the track with a profound sense of wonderment and joy. It’s a brilliant fusion of club-ready beats and acoustic ethnicity. “Curiosity” also has a horizontal appeal, seamlessly fitting into chill-out playlists and soundtrack settings. It’s a versatile cut that can shift effortlessly between environments while losing none of its emotive resonance. With early support from tastemaker Nora En Pure and her esteemed Purified Radio show, “Curiosity” is well on its way to becoming a melodic house/techno anthem. 23. Mystery is brewing around what appears to be plans for a huge Fred Again.. concert in Los Angeles coming up very soon. The acclaimed English producer has been leaving a trail of cryptic clues pointing to a major live performance taking place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on June 14th. The first hint came from Fred’s own vinyl release, which had “we just booked a show on the 14th June” written on a paper coming with the vinyl. But, where? Today, the artist posted an Instagram story showing a series of event listings at The Roxy Theatre in LA, with one dated June 16th. However, at just 500 capacity, that intimate West Hollywood venue seems far too small for a Fred Again.. show these days. Adding fuel to the fire, a student at USC has shared photos from the university’s iconic Coliseum that show the massive field has been marked with “14 JUNE” in huge text visible from the air. If legitimate, this seems to indicate Fred has rented out the 77,000-person stadium for a 360-degree, in-the-round concert setup akin to his transcendent 2022 show at Madison Square Garden. Alleged details have begun circulating that this potential Coliseum gig would incorporate a massive circular stage surrounded by fans on all sides. However, no official announcement has been made as of yet by Fred Again.. or his team. The British artist continues his meteoric rise off the back of his hugely popular Actual Life 3 album releases and the barnstorming success of his recent Civic Center Plaza performance in San Francisco with Skrillex. More details are expected to be revealed soon about what is shaping up to be Fred Again..’s next must-see live experience. 24. Twitch has inked licensing deals with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music and "hundreds" of independent music rightsholders enabling DJs to legally play copyrighted songs in their streams, the company announced this week. The landmark agreements, which Twitch claims are the first of their kind, precipitated the "Twitch DJ Program," which will pay royalties to the platform's artists—but with a few caveats. "This program is only applicable to those who live-stream as DJs, and does not apply to other uses of music," Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in a blog post. "DJs will need to opt-in to a new agreement that will apply to all streaming on their channel. For those who only stream DJ content part-time, we recommend creating a second standalone channel dedicated to DJ live-streaming." In order to "cover the cost of the music" played by DJs in their videos, Twitch will allocate a portion of their revenue to the record labels and artists behind the streamed music. In other words, DJs will have to cough up an unspecified percentage of their earnings to rightsholders. These costs will vary depending on "how a channel monetizes," but for most streamers, Clancy says, Twitch will split them 50/50. The platform experienced breakneck growth after its acquisition by Amazon for $970 million back in 2014, and its popularity erupted during the COVID-19 pandemic as DJs desperately turned to streaming to stay financially afloat. But Twitch found itself in hot water after issuing rampant DMCA takedown notices to legions of its users, who were unwittingly playing songs in their streams without the rights to do so by virtue of the company's business model. "DJs have been streaming on Twitch for some time now, but have been personally responsible for the challenges of tackling these issues, along with the risks of not doing so," reads Clancy's blog post. "Twitch has been able to mitigate these risks during ongoing negotiations with music companies, who have been willing to keep the status quo during our discussions." "It's crucial that DJs understand the status quo on Twitch was not sustainable, and any viable future for the community required we find a solution," he added. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy.Twitch The new licensing deals not only legitimize Twitch as a veritable music hub, but also serve as a watershed moment for DJs. They can now freely select music and perform without legal ramifications, opening up new avenues for monetization and audience growth. A late-2021 study by the music analytics firm Luminate suggested that Twitch is instrumental in fueling the discovery of electronic dance music and found that the platform's users "are 84% more likely to listen to EDM than the average music listener." Look no further than Crossmauz, a teenage Twitch creator who configured in his bedroom a rig of festival-grade lasers, strobe lights, speakers and even pyrotechnics to blast EDM during his gaming streams. The number of DJs streaming on Twitch has more than quadrupled since 2020, according to Clancy, who said that "over 15,000 of them have been able to build and monetize communities of music fans" on the platform. "We're proud to be the first major service to provide a safe, permanent home for DJs, and we are excited to now be able to promote and support these creators as they build communities on our service and beyond," he said. 25. Global superstar Pitbull joins forces once again with legendary DJ Afrojack and R&B icon Ne-Yo for a brand new summer smash, ‘2 The Moon‘ [feat. DJ Buddha]. This collaboration is a reunion years in the making. Remember the global smash ‘Give Me Everything’ (feat. Nayer) back in 2011? Pitbull, Afrojack, and Ne-Yo were the masterminds behind that chart-topping monster hit. Well, they’re back to recapture that magic with ‘2 The Moon.’ In ‘2 The Moon’, handclaps lock in the rhythm over a tropical groove, punctuated by explosive horns and Afrojack’s signature production style. Pitbull delivers empowering lines, boasting, “I’m married to the hustle, what a wife,” while Ne-Yo seals the deal with the irresistible hook, “So tonight, let’s have some fun until the moon turns into the sun.” Here’s what Pitbull had to say about the track: “2 The Moon’ is all about a wild ride, celebrating life, and dreaming big. We wanted to create something that makes you feel unstoppable. The party never ends when NE-YO and I get together.
