  3. As one of the legacy keyholders of electro house, Benny Benassi blessed us with ‘Satisfaction’ 22 years ago today. The lead single from his debut album, Hypnotica, took to the airwaves and catapulted Benassi to prominence, thrusting the EDM sub-genre into mainstream status. Even if you weren’t a nightclub goer, the track still found a way to reach your eardrums. Anyone who claimed never hearing ‘Satisfaction’ would quickly recognize it if asked, “Do you remember Terrell pop-and-locking on the dance floor in the movie White Chicks?” The answer would almost always be “yes.” That’s when you’d reply, “That’s ‘Satisfaction’.” The single went on to earn Gold certification in six countries, including the United States. ‘Satisfaction’ has been sampled by DJs and artists worldwide, from Ludacris’s ‘Ultimate Satisfaction’ in 2006, to Dada Life’s ‘Just Bleep Me (Satisfaction)’ in 2010, and most recently, Drillionaire sampling it for his single ‘Fashion’ just last year. After twenty-two years, it’s clear that ‘Satisfaction’ by Milan native Benny Benassi isn’t fading away anytime soon. In fact, the song will forever be a cornerstone of EDM culture and a pivotal figure in the history of electro house.
  4. Nine years ago today, the progressive house duo Axwell & Ingrosso released their hit single ‘Sun is Shining’. This track, filled with melodic and uplifting beats, offers listeners an easy-going, feel-good, sing-along experience. The music video creatively emphasizes the song’s reassuring lyrics, displaying them on index cards that serve as flashcards to remind viewers that everything always turns out alright in the end. ‘Sun is Shining’, the fourth single from their album ‘More Than You Know’, quickly climbed to the #1 spot on the Swedish charts. The track earned numerous certifications, including Gold, Platinum in three countries, Double Platinum in Norway, and 5x Platinum in Sweden. The song also garnered mainstream attention when it was featured in H&M’s Summer 2015 campaign, featuring top models Natasha Poly, Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, and Joan Smalls. ‘Sun is Shining’ remains a beloved anthem in the progressive house genre, symbolizing positivity, hope, and resilience.

  12. A Birmingham City University (BCU) alumnus is hoping to inspire others to pick up a camera as he opens his debut exhibition, featuring music stars Stormzy and Cardi B. Jonathan Williams, who graduated from BCU with a BA in Media and Communication in 2019, now works as a freelance photographer and opened his debut exhibition at Grosvenor Road Studios in Handsworth. The 25-year-old has thanked BCU and its staff for helping him get started on his freelance journey and giving him a confidence boost to pursue his dreams: “I used to be really shy and introverted, but the staff at BCU helped develop my confidence as well as build my profile as a freelancer. They saw my drive and determination to pursue a freelance career long before anyone else.“Careers+ staff would recommend me to clients, some of whom I still work with today!” Jonathan, from Aston, started expanding his passion for photography at university by borrowing equipment through BCU’s hires and loans programme. “The scheme was invaluable to me. Getting to hire out cameras, rather than having to buy my own, allowed me to develop those skills and start my freelancing journey while studying for my degree. “I remember running from campus with a loaned camera to a Jorja Smith concert at the O2 Academy so I could photograph her performance. Some of those images are featured in the exhibition too!” Jonathan is currently featured in BCU’s new campaign, Look At Me Now, which highlights the achievements of the university’s alumni. Grosvenor Road Studios, formerly Hollick & Taylor Studios, is the oldest professional recording studio still operating in Birmingham, first opening in the 1940s. The exhibition showcases iconic images of artists in front of huge crowds as well as intimate behind-the-scenes moments. Amongst the names photographed are legendary Birmingham artists such as Mist, Mowgli, Lady Leshur and fellow alumna, Laura Mvula, who graduated from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2008. “The past five years as a freelance photographer have been extraordinary. It’s been a rollercoaster journey filled with so many achievements, challenges, and memorable moments, resulting in an extensive catalogue of photos I’m finally ready to exhibit,” said Jonathan. Grosvenor Road Studios was acquired by music group Black Voices in 2001 and now runs training and development schemes in the local community. Carol Pemberton MBE, Founder and Managing Director of Black Voices said: “Grosvenor Road Studios is a creative, cultural and community hub and this free exhibition of live music photography by an incredible Birmingham talent offers another reason for local residents to step through our doors. “We hope to inspire the young people entering our studios and highlight another one of the possible careers they could pursue in the music and creative industry.” Jonathan hopes those who visit the exhibition will be inspired by his journey: “I want to inspire the next generation of Birmingham creatives who are looking for inspiration. I would like them to see my work, see how far I’ve come since graduating and know they can achieve the same level of success.” The exhibition is open now until October 2024. 14. Amapiano, the infectious South African house music genre, has come a long way. While debates swirl about its origins, the consensus is clear: Amapiano is South African house music. Not everyone, however, discovered this mesmerizing and compelling sound at the same time. For some, their first introduction to the genre was the viral "Whistle Girl'' video, wherein Reneiloe Seemane vibes to "Jebson" by Kabza De Small and Thebelebe. For EDM.com readers, the Amapiano wave washed over in the latter half of 2020, when we highlighted its swelling influence on TikTok. That was before Uncle Waffles ignited a new surge with her "People are burning" post, which not only transformed her career, but also amplified the genre's global reach. Today, Amapiano resonates worldwide, with TitoM & Yuppe's "Tshwala Bam" echoing through clubs and social media. “People are burning 😳” pic.twitter.com/H5JRg8sXHX — Waffles🐉 (@unclewaffffles) October 16, 2021 It would be difficult—and unconvincing—to attribute the success of Amapiano to a single moment. Instead, the world is witnessing a remarkable domino effect of moments, platforms and artists that have collectively championed the Amapiano sound. Since 2020, there's been an immeasurable amount of totemic moments for the genre. The 2021 BET HipHop Awards featured an Amapiano cypher, Beatport officially recognized Amapiano as a genre the following year and Uncle Waffles in 2023 became the first Amapiano DJ to perform on Coachella's legendary mainstage. These milestones, alongside niche festivals, labels and agencies catering to the genre, have further fueled the genre's rise. The Amapiano sound, a cocktail of sultry synths, euphoric keys and infectious percussion, has infiltrated clubs worldwide and every corner of the internet, thanks to the DJs behind the decks. Their performances, social media posts, dance moves, mixes and tracks have helped the genre skyrocket in popularity around the world. As Amapiano continues to extend far beyond the confines of South Africa, here are 10 DJs you need on your radar. TxCWhat’s better than one Amapiano DJ? Two. Most people swear Tarryn Reid and Clairise Hefke are twins. The truth is, they’re not. But like peanut butter and jelly, they harmonize effortlessly, enhancing each other’s essence. Their onstage chemistry together has inspired countless female DJs to adopt the "TxC formula" by joining forces as a duo. While many have sprung up in their wake, TxC have stood out internationally as trailblazers. When they aren’t touring the US and Europe or lighting up clubs in Dubai, they craft Amapiano bangers in the studio. TxC is of those Amapiano acts everyone simply needs to see live at least once in their life. What sets their live performances apart from the rest is the entertaining and energetic way they commandeer all stages, both big and small. TENOCEANSTENOCEANS is the rising star redefining South African house music. Her experimental sounds and eclectic mixes cut across Amapiano, Gqom, Afro-house and Afro-tech and dance music. Effortlessly blending various genres, TENOCEANS turns heads with unexpected sonic twists. Her innovative style and fearless approach to DJing has caught the attention of music executives and fans within the Amapiano community. YumbsIn the vast pool of talented Amapiano DJs, Yumbs stands out as one of the most versatile. Striking a fine balance between DJing and producing, he is a collaborator extraordinaire. When Yumbs isn't putting his special touch on remixes (like Ciara and Chris Brown’s "How We Roll"), he's busy getting crowds moving to Amapiano beats in clubs both at home and abroad. Musa KeysA favorite among partygoers and house music fans, Musa Keys brings a unique flair to Amapiano. From DJing and production to songwriting and singing, he's a true jack of all trades. His charismatic sets and catchy tunes have earned him widespread acclaim, including a Grammy nomination in 2023 for the Amapiano-infused track "Available" with Davido. Kelvin MomoKelvin Momo's approach to Amapiano is deeply soulful. His tracks often feature lush, atmospheric soundscapes that transport listeners to another realm. He’s the kind of DJ you want at an Amapiano brunch party, but make no mistake—he can also have the club jumping in seconds. Shakes & LesOne word that comes to mind when most South Africans hear the name Shakes & Les is "funk." They are best known for their debut EP, Funk Series, a colorful collection of various Amapiano flavors. Although relatively new in the Amapiano scene, Shakes & Les are quickly taking over the streets and clubs of South Africa. Justin99Justin99 began his journey as a DJ in 2019 and has recently been achieving the success he deserves. This young, energetic DJ puts the fun in Amapiano. He and Uncle Waffles are the reason the world couldn’t get the song "Yahyuppiyah" out of their heads in 2023. KMATKMAT serves Amapiano with a side of Afro-tech. It’s been four years since she took a leap of faith to start her career as a DJ, but today, she’s a staple in many local clubs and has been releasing records of her own. Watching KMAT’s set closely, you'll see a DJ who genuinely loves and enjoys the craft. DJ TsheguOn stage, DJ Tshegu is a genre-defying sensation, captivating audiences with her dynamic performances. Online, she's a viral Amapiano hitmaker, intuitively attuned to what her listeners crave. Her sets are ever-evolving, predominantly featuring Amapiano and house music with a touch of old-school vibes. This versatile style allows her to unite audiences of all ages, fostering a shared appreciation for Amapiano. Pearl ThusiSome people have the ability to be one thing and be good at only one thing. Not immensely talented multipotentialites like Idris Elba, Shaq and Pearl Thusi. Although Thusi is widely known as an actor and media personality, her foray into Amapiano has been nothing short of spectacular. After spending years honing her craft and practicing until she couldn’t stand anymore, Thusi made her debut at Soweto's Makhelwane Festival. Since then, she has been performing in venues across South Africa, delivering sets characterized by high-energy South African house music and incredibly smooth transitions. It is easy to fall into the trap of being validated by external influence. ‘From Inside’ is about asking yourself what you are actually feeling with no noise from the outside. When you are honest with that part of yourself, it can lead to more authentic relationships where both people can be themselves. The inspiration for ‘From Inside’ came from an experience I (Kam) had in Laguna Beach, and me wanting to capture that feeling, a memory. For the creative process, we aimed to make a deep house anthem that was emotional but also radiated a sonic vibe that makes listeners and festival crowds want to dance throughout it. Being a duo how do you manage making collective decisions, what is the secret? As I am sure there could be possible creative differences that may arise? When we’re in the studio, we collaborate to generate creative ideas and bounce them off each other. We are open to listening to each other’s ideas because we have a mantra – doing what’s best for the song. All our ideas are geared towards this intention. If there’s ever a disagreement, we always aim to find a compromise. Thankfully, we don’t disagree on a lot, so it’s been pretty smooth. Our secret is to listen to each other, make sure we’re on the same page, and always prioritize what’s best for our music! You have had a busy past few weeks with festival sets like Breakaway Tampa & Project Glow. How was that experience? And maybe tell us what your dream festival would be to play at in the future? We have been fortunate to play at 5 Breakaway festivals so far, and the one in Tampa was our favorite. The crowd’s energy was amazing, and the event was well-organized. The weather was perfect, making it a spectacular experience. We feel lucky to have checked Coachella off our bucket list this year with BLOND:ISH. Additionally, we’ve had the opportunity to play at the Brooklyn Mirage 2-3 times, for which we are very grateful. One of our biggest dreams in America is to perform at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. That would be the pinnacle for us. Both Kam and I have vision boards, and Red Rocks is a top item on both of our lists. We loved seeing you guys debut at Coachella with non-other than BLOND:ISH who you have an upcoming collab with? That’s a huge move – what kick-started this collaboration? We are published by Ultra Publishing, and Danny organizes a lot of sessions for us. He recently informed us about an upcoming opportunity with BLOND:ISH. She typically brings together a group of writers and producers in one room to create magic. We had an idea that we’ve been working on for about 4 months, and when we played it for her, it caught her attention. There’s a good chance it will be featured in one of her upcoming albums! You can check out a sneak peek of the upcoming collaboration from Coachella below. Your debut album Proof took fans on a journey through the 12 tracks! What are your plans in terms of new music in the near future, would it include a new album? The album was a really good experiment and a masterpiece as a cohesive piece of art. Looking back at where we were at the time as a duo, Proof might have been a bit premature, but we are proud of it. Right now, Kam and I handle everything from top to bottom. We write and produce together, and then send it off to the mixing engineers. Currently, we are looking to expand by working with other producers and writers. We have been in the studio not only with BLOND:ISH, but also with Shallou and Wax Motif. Some great music is being produced. Our goal is to make really good songs that support our touring. Collaborating with other great artists helps us evolve our music. If there is an idea or theme that we feel strongly about, we will pursue it. We have great and new audiences as we tour, so we can test out our material to see if they like it and can expand our reach. How has the sound of Night Tales evolved since you started and what has driven it to what it is today? That is great question. The evolution of our music has been significant. When you listen to our first three singles from 2017, you’ll notice that they are quite different from each other. For example, ‘Want‘ is a fan favorite, but it’s not the style we are currently pursuing. Initially, we experimented with different genres before honing in on our mutual love for electronic music. We started our journey in Australia, where we supported Hayden James. However, the electronic music community there is relatively small. To connect with our fan base, we made the decision to move to the United States. Our first show in the States was at Electric Zoo, followed by a performance at Brooklyn Mirage. We’ve come a long way since then. The evolution of our live shows especially stands out. While we still maintain our core live show, we’ve incorporated more showmanship and energy, infusing urban hip-hop and R&B soul elements into our performances. This has influenced the style of music we create. Despite the diversity in our music, Kam’s voice remains the constant thread throughout. As we continue to tour, we’ve noticed that our audience wants to have a great time and party. This shift has transformed our live shows, where we’ve put new spins on our original songs and adapted them to fit a more festival-like format. I am stoked about you lads going on tour with Jerro! Alongside that, what do you have planned for the rest of year? The Jerro tour is a significant one. We’ll be participating in more festivals, such as the Elements Festival, and a few more Breakaways including Minnesota and Minneapolis for the first time. We will also be visiting Nashville, where we were stranded for three months during the pandemic. What are the most impost lessons you have learnt in your career so far? We stayed true to our musical style, even when we weren’t getting much recognition initially. When the pandemic hit, we decided to release a song every month. We didn’t realize that our music was gaining attention from parties worldwide. We continued to believe in our sound, which we feel is timeless and not bound to any specific trend. Our song ‘Friends,’ released in 2018, is still popular today. We learned to stay open to collaborations and be patient when considering new opportunities. In 2022, ‘Friends’ went from 500,000 streams to 25 million. This experience taught us to be creative with contracts and not settle for something if we have doubts. We realized that we have more power than we thought. It’s all about believing in yourself and having patience! Lets do a fun one – In an alternate universe if you weren’t in the music industry what would you have done? Kam: I would have loved to be an engineer, surgeon or some type of inventor. Aaron: I excelled in sports during my youth, and I likely would have pursued a career as a professional footballer or worked in the sports industry, perhaps as a personal trainer! Any last words to your fans! Thank you to all our fans for believing in us and loving our music. We’ve had some great fan interactions, and that will be something we’ll keep close to our hearts. This makes it all worth it! We had a great time chatting with Aaron & Kam from Night Tales, check out their music if you haven’t yet! Hope you can catch them in North America this summer, here are their tour dates. Stay tuned to EDMTunes for all your dance music updates! 17. In the words of Kaytranada, "Timeless music, that's all it is..." The generational producer has always possessed a knack for crafting music that seamlessly bridges the past and present. Whether showcasing his encyclopedic knowledge of R&B and soul or collaborating with the music industry's corps d'elite, Kaytranada effortlessly fuses his deep musical heritage with contemporary innovation and allows his music to transcend the test of time. That's showcased beautifully in the Canadian beatsmith's new project, the aptly-titled TIMELESS, his first solo album in five years. Spanning 21 tracks, the two-pronged album is filled with star-studded collaborations, from Childish Gambino to Tinashe. But the album remains unmistakably Kaytranada throughout, imbuing his trademark electro-funk style with tinctures of vintage hip-hop and pop. The opening track, "Pressure," is a tribute to Lupe Fiasco and Jay-Z's 2006 track of the same name, but brings us into an atmosphere that feels like a vibrant, neon-lit nightclub buzzing with energy. As the album unfolds, tracks like "Feel A Way" and "Witchy" fan the flames of this intoxicating allure with lush synths, pulsating percussion and soul-stirring basslines. True to its name, TIMELESS emanates a nostalgic yet accessible retro vibe throughout, evoking memories of bygone eras while beckoning you to lose yourself in the present moment. You can listen to TIMELESS below and find the new album on streaming platforms here. Out on June 14, the EP’s four tracks lay the foundation for the direction of the label and a 24-city summer tour across the USA. Tour dates include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Vancouver. If lead single ‘Carry The Fire’ sounds familiar, it’s probably because you heard it during Sub Focus’ massive circuitGROUNDS set at EDC Las Vegas. A euphoric drum and bass track with a speedy tempo and lush vocals, ‘Carry The Fire’ is accompanied by the EP’s other tracks, ‘Supernova,’ ‘Losing My Mind,’ and ‘Sell My Soul.’ BEACON has partnered with AEI Music and UKF to bring their vision to life, with founder Anthony Tedder aiming to create a vibrant community for both homegrown and international artists. 19. Who are you? Julien SKS – promoter of several nights in Toulouse at Le Bikini. DJ, and producer in two projects – Broma with Tryst Temps and Forum with The Clamps and Opsen. I founded and have run Vandal Records in Toulouse since 2004. What’s your ethos? The label focuses on releasing drum and bass music aimed at the dancefloor from both established and up-and-coming artists helping to showcase the diversity, creativity and forward-thinking within the genre. Tell us your origin story. Was it a deep concept or a chat in the pub? A mix of both for sure! I was organising rave parties at the very end of the 90s with my first electronic music crew Kimyst and we met a hard techno tribe called Fox Tanz. Laurent – Loul from Fox Tanz was running 2 or 3 Techno labels and asked me to create a drum and bass division. So I found a name, an artwork and got music from artists for it and it was the start of Vandal in 2004. After 6 vinyl releases, Loul stopped running labels and I decided to continue the Vandal adventure on my own. Also, I have to mention Redeyes who has always been a great help and support with the label during the years with his creativity and vision. Where are you based? / Tell us about your local scene… The label is based in Toulouse where as people have said “There is something in the water” because there are a lot of drum and bass artists who have built international careers and had success with it. The scene is very diversified too in terms of style, from artists like Burr Oak (The Clamps & Opsen), Redpill, Forum, Tryst Temps, and Love The End doing harder music, to Redeyes, Trail, Monty, Broma, Fakt, and Visages, making more deep and liquid stuff. Of course, Le Bikini and drum & bass Nights there helped to create vocations for some and brought many artists from the scene to meet and share their passion for this music. Do you have a specific sound or vibe? Vandal Records has an eclectic sound from deep and liquid music to more techy and harder sounds. I think different music vibes can be heard during the day in the car, at the office or on a dance floor. The label is representing these moments like a journey into music. Do you have a regular artist roster- who can we see releasing with you? There are artists who release every year on the label like Objectiv, Minor Forms, Kublai, Motiv, Broma (Tryst Temps and my project), Arclight, and DJ Madd to name but a few… This year has been really busy with the 20 Years Of Vandal Records LP out now on 3×12” vinyl gatefold and digital and loads of releases on the label from Fre4knc, Klippee, Morrow, Love The End and Subliminal, Objectiv, Minor Forms, Broma and new Toulouse talent Fakt are the next lined up. Tell us about your A&R process… I take time to listen to the demos I receive. It is very important to respect and listen to the work an artist has sent to you. I also listen to a lot of promos from other labels and new music releases to discover new talent. Also, as I’m a promoter I try to be aware as much as I can about what is happening in the scene to book the line up for my parties. When I release music with an artist I speak a lot with them, finding a place between what they would like to release, what I’m looking for and what I think would work with the label’s sound. We have had a visual identity at Vandal for 20 years and I always ask the artist if they would like something in particular for the artwork. All this is to ensure that both the music and artwork of the release meet the expectations of both the artist and the label. What makes you different from other labels? Vandal has always taken risks to push new talent as well as releasing more well-known producers. The label has also garnered praise for its distinctive artwork and design, with each release featuring unique and eye-catching visuals. In addition to releasing music, Vandal Records also hosts events and showcases for drum and bass artists, helping to support and promote the scene both in France and internationally. What does it take to run a bass music label in 2024? I would say lots of time and dedication. We are in the sharp position of being a launching pad for new talent as well as being attractive enough for established artists. What have you got coming up that we should look out for? Next up is Modern Soul LP this summer, as well as regular artist releases across the end of the year. Also we are working with a UK-based label to release a collab album and tour featuring artists from our respective catalogues, I won’t say any more just yet… Also, you can come to Toulouse and celebrate with us for our birthday party at the mighty Bikini on September 7 with a sick line up of artists from the album. 20 Years Of Vandal Records LP is Out Now
