From Predicting the Future to Reuniting With Lost Loved Ones, Zingara Channels a Life of Phenomena in "The Code of Dreamz"
If music is a lens into an artist's mind, Zingara's debut album is a portal to her conscious, subconscious and what exists in between. The Code of Dreamz sonically translates a life of peculiar occurrences. "There was a huge tsunami and earthquake that hit Japan…" Zingara tells EDM.com. "It’s one of the biggest in history. The night before it happened—I was a kid and didn’t know how to spell 'tsunami'—I had a dream with the ocean and saw it. I basically lived through it from a woman’s perspective. I woke up and thought, 'That felt really real. What the frick was that?'" "I went online and a giant tsunami had just hit Japan." Zingara claims her vision relating to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami—the most powerful earthquake in Japan’s history and the fourth most powerful earthquake recorded in human history—was among her early foresight of future events, including the deaths of loved ones. “I never know what to say because before it happens you sound crazy and you sound crazier when it does happen,” Zingara says. “So I just write it down and keep note of it.” Zingara dreamed vividly from a young age. Her aunt took an interest in her vibrant relationship with her subconscious and taught her about spirits, tarot cards, oracles, astrology and witchcraft. It’s these lessons that nurtured a seed of spirituality, which later became the fabric of her haunting bass music. “I was the weird ghost kid,” Zingara said. “...When I started to make my own music, it clicked one day that I could start telling these stories through my music. Ever since then, when it did click, that’s when my song ‘Astra’ was birthed into the world and it stuck with people. I thought, ‘Okay, maybe this is what I’m supposed to be talking about.’” “These experiences, talking about it and relating to other people ended up helping people. At first, when I was a kid I thought me and my family were the only people who had these experiences because everyone else around me was like, ‘What the f—?’ It wasn’t until I started talking about it online that I realized how common it was.” Zingara started her music career as a young adult in 2017 after her friend Noi encouraged her to pursue one. Noi, her friend Brandon and her grandfather affectionately called "Pop" all passed away that same year. “I really want to do this even more for them,” Zingara says. “I felt that sometimes when I have musical ideas, they come from another voice in my head. When I write music, I can get into such a flow state where I feel their energy channeled through me.” Zingara’s deep spirituality and dreamworld romps have shaped a distinctive relationship with loss. Grief and anxiety exist, but so does a comforting presentness. Take her new song “The Stars Are Calling Me,” for example, a track not only dedicated to her passed loved ones but also one she believes is touched by them. “It literally felt like it was already written. It felt like it was really written from the stars,” she explains. “It’s just magical seeing it come through life in these stories and experiences actually manifest into reality. I work with grief directly and channelled and it’s magical in a weird, twisted way.” "I sound like a lunatic when I talk about this conversation. The way I view loss and that kind of stuff is a little bit different because of my connection to spirit. It’s so weird to say but I feel closer to my loved ones—the ones that have passed—I feel their energy all the time." Zingara was 12 when she started writing her dreams down. It’s a common exercise among active and prospective lucid dreamers. The “Close Your Eyes” producer shared one particularly vivid dream she had the week her friend Brandon passed. “There are experiences that genuinely do feel real and I’m self-aware in. That’s the difference,” Zingara said when comparing these dreams to more anxiety-inducted subconscious manifestations. “The emotions are nuts.” “The week that my friend Brandon passed away, he knew that I was super involved in the spirit world and dream world. He came to me in a dream where he was standing on the edge of a cliff. There was a huge waterfall and crazy colors. I can’t even describe to you what I was looking at. He looks at me and says, ‘These are some of the places I get to go now.’ He hugged me and disappeared. I was like, ‘What the f—? Screw you first of all. I want to come. Okay, like you get to explore the universe! Cool!’ It was crazy magical.” Zingara’s rising popularity has introduced her to countless others who’ve shared similar experiences. Many people will be skeptical of such stories, this writer among them. Zingara acknowledges and accommodates that comfortably. To each their own. But grief and loss are universally shared experiences, something Zingara is seasoned to help others process. “I’m very grateful for the lessons and experiences I’ve had and had to go through since they passed away because it’s led me to a way to help people dealing with their grief in a way that is new to a lot of people,” she says. “For me, I’ve been through it and I know how to go through it and deal with it and work with it in a weird way.” Your mileage may vary on the veracity of clairvoyance and what follows death. But these spiritual winds stoke the embers and fan the flames of a bright musical journey. The Code of Dreamz is a guide through Zingara’s ethereal gears—And it’s magical. NIIKO X SWAE's "Detention" EP Is a Soundtrack for Youthful Defiance
If sitting still was a class requirement, NIIKO X SWAE's Detention EP would land everyone in hot water. The duo's latest release practically demands movement, wholly inspiring an irresistible urge to dance. The collection sees NIIKO X SWAE truly come into their own with uplifting rhythms that carry a spirited sense of urgency and fun. Taking center stage is "My Head," a track that lyrically strikes a rebellious chord. The vocal-heavy arrangement reverberates like a whispered conspiracy, inviting you to break free from the mundane. The Breakfast Club-inspired music video drives the message home, evoking memories of youthful defiance and the unfiltered joy of childlike whimsy. Equally captivating is "Feel The Way I Do," a track that embodies the essence of letting instinct take over. It offers an immediately gratifying listening experience where dance piano chords find harmony with the twang of tech house pluck bass, its rhythm pumping with an urgency that mirrors the rush of adrenaline. Meanwhile, "Rain" represents a switch in tone to distinctly cinematic melodic techno anchored by deep, rolling basslines. If school's out, then NIIKO X SWAE’s Detention marks the start of unforgettable summer nights ahead. Listen to the new EP below and find it on streaming platforms here. EDMTunes New Music Friday – Week 24
Listen to the most flavour-packed tracks we discovered this week. Music makes the world go round. And in that regard, we’re constantly on the lookout for new, exciting tunes to share with our audience. We’ve found some that cause goosebumps, and make you open your eyes and get up from your chair to dance. So put on your best pair of headphones, or turn up your speakers, and enjoy this week’s New Music Friday. Here are our top picks for the best music we came across this week, in no particular order. Temple One – Uncharted Genre: Progressive Trance, Trance We’re kicking off this week’s NMF with the return of one of those hidden Trance masters to the site. Nearly one year ago we shared the news of his album Vivid Motion, and we welcome him today with the release of his new track, ‘Uncharted‘. If you want to know one thing before diving in: it’s pure Trancy bliss. Temple One, an artist just a few years away from being active for two entire decades in the industry, presents today a pure journey through airy pads, sensitive atmospheres, and an overall fly-away sensation in this Progressive Trance wonder. Press ‘Play’ to be carried away by the elegant sound of the man himself. skribbs – DON’T LET GO, PT. 2 Genre: Drum & Bass, Techno Up-and-coming artist skribbs is not holding back this time. Some time ago, his original ‘DON’T LET GO’ sparked a crazy idea in him: what if he were to rethink the arrangement into something as banging as it was daring? And so, that’s how ‘DON’T LET GO, PT. 2‘ was born. “It is by far my most requested track to play at shows“, he says. Blending a couple of very different genres in quite a seamless manner, he’s been able to pull off a really interesting hybrid, which is comprised of Liquid Drum & Bass during the breaks, and a four-on-the-floor drop ensemble. And we can’t get enough of it, if we’re completely honest. Kamil Ghaouti x ANJE – All Up Genre: Deep House, EDM Get ready for what might become your next Summer anthem. Just in time for the change of season, Kamil Ghaouti and ANJE joined forces to unveil their single ‘All Up‘. The track represents a nod to the recent past, around 7-10 years ago, in which its sound reigned the Deep House kingdom. Enjoy the caress of soft 80s pads, slightly formant-pitched male vocals, offbeat House pianos, and a feel-good atmosphere, making up this song designed to be your companion on long rides by the coastal motorways, or simply at a gathering with friends. Whatever it is that you use it for, it won’t disappoint. 1111 – Joy Genre: UK House And speaking about feel-good songs! Enter 1111, the brand-new Electronic alias from established vocalist, songwriter and producer, Lauren L’aimant. After a long while earning support from artists such as Danny Howard and Ben Malone, she felt it was only fitting to open up a bit more and found this new concept. Right away you’ll notice how ‘Joy‘ simply makes you feel happy, somehow it achieves it from the first moment. Well, Lauren might have the answer: “I wrote ‘Joy’ as an expression of gratitude to the people I love; my girlfriend, family, and friends. They’ve been by my side through the coldest and darkest moments“. They are her joy, and we hope this track is yours. Longo feat. Marco Lollis & Martina Corona – All About U Genre: Future House And while we’re on this path, let’s wrap this week’s NMF on yet another of those tracks that make you feel happy from the start, just because. This one sparked our interest, since it feels super fitting for warm, summer days. A trio of Italian-born stars bring us the final track of this week: Longo, Marco Lollis, and Martina Corona. With a track that crosses boundaries from House and Future House over to Dance Pop territories, the end result of three good friends joining forces in the studio is a track that is emotional in the best of ways, and it’s called ‘All About U‘. The fast-paced base made by Longo gives way for Marco and Martina’s vocals to playfully take turns and offer the best result you could think of. Try it out for yourself! Final Words Stay tuned, for more of our compilations every Friday — based on demand. DIM KELLY Releases Exquisite ‘Homily’ EP On All Day I Dream
The label mainstay aced his ADID production once again. Great news comes from one of the finest Organic House imprints out there — All Day I Dream. This Friday sees the awaited release of a trio of tracks coming from one of the label’s most consistent producers: DIM KELLY. The Homily EP, as it’s been titled, once again explores the top-notch techniques and sounds of the artist, currently in his fifth year as a producer under the name. Talk about growth! Keeping his pace of an ADID EP a year strong and steady, the time has come for his 2024 contribution, after his past EPs Nocturna Animal in 2021, Mangrove in 2022, and Pianologic in 2023. The EP doesn’t only see him as a standalone act, though, for he brings Belgian musician Mondingo and Maya Safar’s soft voice to the package. Kelly recalls the creation of the EP had been happening for quite some time. He says, “As always, I try to convey emotions through my music. When I heard Mondingo’s voice two years ago, I was completely blown away by it. His voice has a depth and emotion that really touches me, so it was only natural that we did something together“. “I composed the music, sent it to him, and two days later, he sent back the vocals, which I loved. ‘Homily’ existed.” -DIM KELLY. The Homily EP With a total runtime of over 21 minutes, you can be sure each of these tracks will take you on a journey (which is my favourite part of these releases — we’ll talk about it someday). Through warm pianos, playful percussion, and just enough stellar elements, the record tells a different tale every 7 minutes, approximately. DIM KELLY – Homily EP Tracklist Homily with Mondingo Like When We Love with Maya Safar Rising Child ‘Homily’ The title track, ‘Homily‘, which gives the EP its name, is one of those IDs you will recognise from artists from the ADID roster all over the world during the past months. I may have listened to this one on Lee Burridge’s Burning Man 2023 set, I’m not sure. But what I’m sure of is this is not the first time I have listened to the fantastic atmosphere this track brings. Mysterious, taking away a sense of closure keywise but still giving the proper warmth Dim is famous for. Modningo’s vocals add a whole new layer of flavour, and actually, not only complement the track, but complete it. ‘Like When We Love’ If I had to pick one of the three for me, this is the one. Daring and energetic, ‘Like When We Love‘ crosses over to Afro House territory, and uses the piano resource in quite a different way from its brother, giving a much more playful, groovy feel, and serving as a top element instead of a supporter. The final touch is how Maya’s voice takes turns with other elements, such as a background trumpet and airy strings, to make the entire release shine to new levels. ‘Rising Child’ I know I picked the previous track as my favourite, but I need to highlight just how beautiful the arrangement is on this one. ‘Rising Child‘ is pure Organic bliss. From the shy percussion used, to the warm bassline driving the song, the vocal beds, and the octave-lowered strings, this might be the most elegant of the bunch, diving into a completely different dimension of depth. Little tracks can actually pull off these lower strings, and this one is most certainly a perfect example of HOW to do it. Lovely. Final Words Listen to DIM KELLY‘s latest three-tracker, Homily, down below for your usual Spotify play. Also, click this link to stream on your platform of choice. And stay tuned to our page for the latest news and views from our beloved Dance music world. The post DIM KELLY Releases Exquisite ‘Homily’ EP On All Day I Dream appeared first on EDMTunes.

Alan Walker And Ina Wroldsen Join Forces On New Anthem ‘Barcelona’
We’ve got the next big summer anthem for those after-sunset moments. Right off the back of his recent team-up with Disney star Kylie Cantrall on ‘Unsure‘, superstar Alan Walker is back with the brand-new, surefire summer anthem, ‘Barcelona‘. This number marks his third time joining forces with the ever-talented vocalist Ina Wroldsen, the voice behind tracks such as Steve Aoki’s ‘Lie To Me’, and her own ‘Strongest’, a track later remixed by Alan Walker, and which has earned just shy of two hundred million Spotify streams as we speak. The track, originally birthed from Ina’s demo, became a reality when Ina presented the rough demo that she had written to Alan Walker who got to producing as soon as he heard it, falling in love with the potential of the record. It is safe to say, both artists’ core sounds and choices are present throughout the record, which goes to show just how good of a team the pair serve as. (Left to right) Alan Walker, Ina Wroldsen. ‘Barcelona’ Wroldsen, a songwriting powerhouse who has lent her talents to artists like Shakira, Demi Lovato, and Calvin Harris, brings her angelic vocals to life over Walker’s signature Future Bass production. Together, they create a bubbly and light-hearted soundscape that perfectly captures the carefree spirit of a summer night. A feel-good and laid-back track, several organic elements are scattered across, such as an acoustic guitar strum and beachy ambient background sounds, and they blend with more digital synths and programmed textures, which actually works for a much greater purpose than a standalone single: the track finds a spot in Walker’s most vanguardist project thus far: his evolution of the Walkerworld concept within Fortnite. As he recalls, “‘Barcelona’ is not just a song that kicks off the summer; it’s also the beginning of a new trilogy and this summer’s big project, Walkerworld Creator Games+. Since I started posting songs on YouTube in 2012, I’ve been inspired by other creators who use my music in their own videos, so I can´t wait to see what people come up with“. Listen to Alan Walker featuring Ina Wroldsen‘s ‘Barcelona‘ down below for your Spotify play. Also, be sure to check out this link to support the track on your platform of choice. Chicago-Based "Rave Train" Event Derailed In Last-Minute CTA Shutdown
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has abruptly pulled the plug on a Brown Line "Rave Train" event that was set to take place in the Windy City on June 15th. The event's organizer, Redline Chicago, sold out of tickets to what was billed as an "exclusive charter train experience" complete with performing DJs across three multiple cars while traversing the city's downtown stations. Redline Chicago characterized the last-minute cancellation as "shocking" and maintain that they had been in talks with the CTA since November to launch the experience. They alleged the agency had approved the event, dubbed the "Redline Express," following negotiations and the two parties have a contract in place. "The CTA's last-minute cancellation is as shocking as it is disappointing, as the CTA has hosted similar rave events in the past, including a multi-train charter event in 2001," organizers said in a statement. A statement from the CTA, however, suggests the event was never approved. "CTA became aware of additional details of the proposed event through the organizer’s promotion that raised concerns regarding rider safety, as well as the sale of event tickets, which does not align with CTA’s policy to charter trains only for private, non-commercial purposes," the organization said. "After careful consideration of all of these factors, this request could not be approved and no formal agreement was entered into between the two parties." As the dust settles, questions linger as to how the line of communication broke down between Redline Chicago and the CTA, and whether the dream of a mobile rave will ever leave the station in the future. Redline Chicago has suggested they will process refunds, but have not yet issued them at the time of this writing.

What Not To Wear, According to NYC Club Bouncers
Ah, New York nightlife – a labyrinth of dos and don’ts, especially when it comes to your sartorial choices. Forget about just showing up; your outfit is your ticket past the gatekeepers, the omnipotent doormen and bouncers who are all about cultivating that elusive “vibe.” Meet Jonah Almost, the gatekeeper at Silencio and sometimes Inferno, who chatted with NYLON about the quest to weed out the “NPCs” – that’s “non-player characters” for the uninitiated. Apparently, the club scene isn’t just about looking good; it’s about what you’re “contributing to the space.” Spoiler alert: your contribution is judged strictly by your wardrobe (at least in NYC – making me grateful for the casual atmosphere cherished in my town of Denver. If you dress up for the club here, you’re the weirdo.) So, what are the absolute no-gos when trying to make it past the velvet ropes in the city that never sleeps? White Sneakers Yes, the beloved white sneakers – adored by all, except the bouncers. Cameron, the doorman at Paul’s Casablanca, dismisses them as a “lack of imagination” and a dead giveaway that you’re no fun on the dance floor. Almost shares this disdain, calling them the “boring” staple of the generic young, straight-guy look. Unless the club is having a particularly slow night, those pristine kicks aren’t cutting it. Golden Goose Shoes Golden Goose shoes, with their intentionally scuffed aesthetic, are apparently too last season for the discerning eyes at the door. Once a millennial favorite, these “dirty” shoes have resurfaced among Gen Z – to the utter dismay of Carattini, who sees their popularity as nothing more than “lemming behavior.” Crocs Seriously, Crocs? This should be a no-brainer. Donté McGuine, a partner at Outer Heaven, might let Balenciaga Crocs slide, but for the love of nightlife, leave the garden clogs at home. Loro Piana Slippers Thinking about rocking your Loro Piana slippers? Think again. Cameron warns they might actually make him nauseous. He’s all for individuality and personal style – just not if it involves these. Shorts Got a great pair of shorts? Keep them far from the club. Carattini has no interest in seeing your kneecaps, ever. McGuine is slightly more lenient, granting an exception only for high-end brands like Miu Miu or Prada (lol). Vineyard Vines Preppy threads from Vineyard Vines? Save them for the Hamptons, quips McGuine. If you must go preppy, at least put some effort into it. Almost begrudgingly acknowledges that preppy can be cool, but not when it’s as thoughtless as throwing on a polo. Sorry, tech bros. Nap Dresses Nap dresses in a club? Seriously? Carattini wonders if you’re planning to catch some Z’s on the dance floor. Save the comfy summer frocks for, well, napping. In short, New York club doors aren’t just guarded by doormen – they’re guarded by fashion critics. So, next time you plan a night out, remember: your outfit is your ticket, and the fashion police are very, very real. That is, if you even care – because being yourself is way more valuable than any “label” that might impress a few random people. And let’s face it, many of our favorite DJs wouldn’t even make it past the door with rules like this. Happy raving! Franky Wah has been robbed in Ibiza, the English house music star revealed this week. Taking to social media, the DJ said his laptop and bags were robbed on the island. Wah called on his fans and music contemporaries in the area to help him locate his belongings and their captor, offering a reward to anyone who can aid in locating the stolen belongings. "Everything's been taken," he said in his video. "It's got so many irreplaceable items in there. All my music, my laptop, everything." Governors Ball Returned to New York City for What Might Be Their Best Festival Yet
This past weekend, one of the biggest music festivals on all of the East Coast returned to New York City’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Governors Ball has established themselves as one of the most anticipated weekends of the year for music lovers from all over who travel to town to experience the magic of the festival. Every year, the iconic festival stacks their lineup with unbelievably talented artists over the course of 3 days defining an experience unlike any other. This year was no different with headliners, Post Malone, SZA, and The Killers taking control of the mainstage on their respective nights. Here’s a breakdown of how the festival went. Day 1 The first day of any festival is always an exciting one as everyone explores the grounds to see all the various activations, food venders, stage locations, and all else that Governors Ball has to offer as part of the experience. The artists billed for Friday include Post Malone, Rauw Alejandro, Dominic Fike, Labrinth, Farruko, Yung Gravy and more. The great thing about Governors Ball this year is that even though there were 3 stages spread across the festival grounds, none of the headlining artists clashed in times with each other which allowed fans to catch almost all of their favorite artists. Rauw Alejandro brought in many Reggaetón fans to the gopuff stage where he performed many of his biggest hits like ‘Santa’, ‘Desesperados’, and ‘Todo De Ti’. After he concluded his performance, the crowd migrated over to the Gov Ball Mainstage, where Post Malone got ready to perform the closing set of the evening. From beginning to end of his hour and half performance, you felt the passion from him in every single song he performed. You almost forget how many hits Post Malone has until you realize that every single song he sang was iconic in their own ways. He didn’t leave out a single song as he ‘I Fall Apart’, ‘Sunflower’, ‘Circles’ and all of his other major hits that everyone knew the lyrics and sang along to. There was no doubt that he had one of the best performances of the entire weekend. Day 2 The second day of the festival started a bit earlier but that only meant fans arrived earlier to explore the festival. Day 2 was headlined by The Killers, 21 Savage, Carly Rae Jepson, Sabrina Carpenter, and many more. Pop superstar, Sabrina Carpenter, was definitely a major highlight of the day and with her performing earlier in the afternoon, this meant the festival grounds was packed up earlier than usual. She put on an incredible performance on the Gov Ball mainstage where she sang hit songs ‘Espresso’ and her newest single ‘Please Please Please’. Another headliner that performed on the Gov Ball mainstage was Carly Rae Jepsen who created one of the most singalong moments of the festival when she performed her iconic hit ‘Call Me Maybe’. Sexyy Redd and 21 Savage performed on the gopuff stage where mayn of the hip-hop acts took place over the weekend. There was no doubt that 21 Savage was one of the most anticipated and most crowded stages of the weekend. Closing out Day 2 of the festival was the legendary rock band, The Killers. Their large library of hit tracks including ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Somebody Told Me’ brought in a wide variety of fans of all ages showing that their music is truly timeless. Day 3 The final day of any music festival is always bittersweet. Having spent 2 incredible days at the festival already, there is no doubt that everyone in attendance wishes it can go on for a few more days. However, if it has to end, there is no better closing to Gov Ball than with SZA. The final day of the festival saw performances from Don Toliver, Kevin Abstract, Chappell Roan, and Peso Pluma. There is no doubt that Peso Pluma was one of the biggest highlights of the weekend. Fans of the artist were draped in the Mexican flag and gathered at his stage early to secure the best spots possible to witness him perform. Unfortunately, he fractured his leg early into his set which limited his movements throughout the rest of the performance but he didn’t let that stop him from performing an incredible show to all his loyal fans. The main attraction for the evening definitely belonged to SZA as she closed out the festival on the mainstage. Fans sang along to her all set as she performed all her biggest hits from ‘Kill Bill’, ‘All The Stars’, ‘Snooze’, and ‘Nobody Gets Me’. Festival Grounds + Food Governors Ball festival grounds are always widely decorated to create an immersive experience for all in attendance. Trees are covered with pink fur, various statues are placed throughout the festival and many photo opportunities are available every where you look. They also have everything situated in a way where all the food venders are in the same location and bars are collected together so that you don’t need to search too hard to figure out all your options. This year had a large variety of food options with many iconic restaurants including Roberta’s Pizza, Luke’s Lobster, Fuku, Magnolia Bakery, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and much more. There ere also many activations spread across the festival with even an NBA Finals booth where there were many photo opps and you even the chance at watching the Finals game during the festival. Rakuten was also on site and hosted their own arcade which featured various prizes that you could win. The activations truly added to the experience for fans to enjoy in between performances. VIP Experience Like all other music festivals, Gov Ball offered a variety of tiers for tickets. GA, GA+ and VIP were the most accessible but there were also cabana options that gave you an elevated table section that oversaw the mainstage. If VIP is within your budget then it is definitely worth your money. Each stage had their own designated VIP viewing area that was near the front of the stage separated from the rest of the crowd. Within the VIP section, there were unique food options that were unavailable to the rest of the festival along with different games like corn hole, Jenga and other fun activities to enhance your day. There were also tables and chairs to relax at in between sets and even some shade to stay cool from the sun. The VIP section between the gopuff stage and the Gov Ball mainstage was actually connected so fans were able to hop between the stages with ease. The Gov Ball VIP experience was definitely the definition of partying in style and certainly created an elevated experience for all those who had access. Governors Ball has established itself as one of the most anticipated music festivals across the East Coast every year. With so many talented artists billed on the lineup and the festival experience continues to evolve year after year, there is no doubt that Gov Ball is a must attend event. If you didn’t get the chance to make it out to the festival this year, make sure to stay on the look out for the date announcement for next and year and secure your tickets early because this is one festival you simply do not want to miss. Porter Robinson Releases Official Lyric Video For ‘Russian Roulette’
Following the release of his single, ‘Russian Roulette,’ on June 7th, DJ/producer Porter Robinson has now gifted us with an official lyric video for the track. Featuring screenshots from various social media platforms and websites, the video visually conveys the overall message of the song, touching on the pressure one can feel from modern-day social media culture. ‘Russian Roulette’ is the third single of the producer’s upcoming third album, expected to drop on July 26th. It follows ‘Knock Yourself Out XD’ released in April and ‘Cheerleader,’ released along with the album announcement in March. Clocking in at over six minutes, ‘Russian Roulette’ takes the listener a little deeper into the producer’s soul, with raw, heartfelt lyrics like “Then I close my eyes. Gamble with my life. Trying not to smile. Maybe this time, I won’t be alright.” “I’m always toying with and entertaining the idea of oblivion, of career suicide, of disappearing. In ‘Russian Roulette’, I’m trying to reconcile those fantasies against the real responsibilities that hang over me. And then it gets dark, and light all at the same time.” -Porter Robinson Arguably on the of the most influential musical acts of our time, Porter Robinson was catapulted onto the scene back in 2011 with his debut EP Spitfire. Since then he has stayed true to himself, by rejecting genre boundaries and the status quo with success. His critically acclaimed albums, Worlds (2014) and Nurture (2021), have demonstrated why the producer deserves the spotlight, and his upcoming album, SMILE! , sees the producer taking yet another turn into unknown territory with a more poppy, guitar-driven style. Music Publishers File FTC Complaint Against Spotify Over Audiobook Bundle
This April, Spotify made waves with its controversial decision to reclassify its Premium tiers as ‘bundles’. They did so by combining music and audiobooks. This move allowed Spotify to pay a lower mechanical royalty rate to publishers and songwriters in the US. However, the backlash from songwriters and publishers has been fierce and unrelenting. NMPA’s Fierce Response At the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) Annual Meeting in New York on June 12, NMPA boss David Israelite declared, “Spotify has declared war on songwriters. Our response shall be all-encompassing.” Indeed, the music publishing community has mobilized an aggressive campaign against Spotify. This includes a legal threat over unlicensed lyrics and a lawsuit from the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) for underpaying royalties. It also calls for Congress to update copyright laws. This would allow publishers to negotiate in a free market like record labels. FTC Complaint Filed Adding to Spotify’s troubles, the NMPA has now filed an official complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This accuses Spotify of “unlawful conduct” that harms millions of consumers and the music marketplace. The complaint alleges that Spotify deceived consumers by converting their music-only subscriptions into bundled audiobook-and-music subscriptions without consent, increasing prices, and complicating the process of canceling subscriptions. The NMPA claims that this practice negatively impacts music publishers and songwriters by reducing royalties and disadvantages market competitors. Broadening the Battle Israelite also revealed that the NMPA has referred the matter to several state attorneys general, inviting them to investigate the alleged consumer protection violations in their states. Additionally, the NMPA has reached out to leading consumer advocacy organizations, expecting them to object to Spotify’s treatment of consumers. Addressing the audience, Israelite emphasized the NMPA’s commitment to defending songwriters and music publishers, stating, “Spotify knows that what it is doing is risky and problematic… But it is not too late for them to do the right thing.” In response, a Spotify spokesperson defended the company’s actions as industry standard, noting that users were notified of price increases and offered multiple plans, including easy cancellations. Despite these reassurances, the dispute over Spotify’s bundling strategy and its impact on the music industry remains contentious. Conclusion Spotify’s attempt to expand its offerings by bundling audiobooks with its Premium plans has sparked a significant backlash from the music publishing community. Furthermore, as the battle intensifies, the outcome could have lasting implications for the music and audiobook streaming landscape. In conclusion, whether Spotify will reverse its course or continue to face mounting legal challenges remains to be seen. Be sure to check out the original complain, here. NYC Passes Legislation to Remove Antiquated Nightlife Restrictions
Good news! NYC City Council has just approved new legislation to support its nightlife sector as part of Mayor Eric Adams’ ‘City of Yes’ plan to change the zoning rules of New York which was established in the city many decades ago. The ‘City of Yes for Economic Opportunity’ is made from 18 proposals and is cited for removing “outdated limitations” on businesses including the nightlife sector. In 1926 the Cabaret Law was introduced which banned dancing comedy, and open mic nights in restaurants and venues in commercial zoning areas as well as to those without one of its hard-to-obtain licenses. And despite the law being repealed in 2017, the ’60s era Zoning laws still prohibited dancing and other actives in over 80% of NYC venues. This new legislation passed on June 6 has overused both the Cabaret Law and the zoning rules of the ’60s therefore allowing the nightlife industry to grow beyond its previous restrictions. This new legislation finally removes these outdated zoning limitations. This means bars, clubs, and restaurants across the city can now allow dancing without fear of fines, paving the way for a more dynamic nightlife experience. Complaint Filed with FTC Against Spotify Over Audiobook Bundling
The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) has lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Spotify, alleging that the streaming service’s recent audiobook bundle offering has led to a decrease in royalty payments to songwriters. The NMPA claims that Spotify’s bundling of audiobooks with its subscription service constitutes a reduction in the value of music streams, thereby diminishing the royalties owed to creators. According to the NMPA, this strategy is not only detrimental to songwriters but also deceptive to consumers, as it may have been implemented without adequate disclosure or consent. The association has estimated that this could cost songwriters and publishers $150 million over the next year. David Israelite of NMPA voiced at NMPA‘s Annual Meeting in New York “Spotify has declared war on songwriters. Our response shall be all-encompassing” The complaint also highlights concerns regarding Spotify’s compliance with the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act. It suggests that the company may have automatically transitioned its premium users to the new bundle without offering a clear option to opt out or maintain a music-only subscription. In response to these allegations, Spotify has defended its practices, stating that its approach to offerings and pricing is standard within the industry and that users are notified well before any changes to their subscriptions. This dispute comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by the Mechanical Licensing Collective against Spotify earlier this year, further intensifying the ongoing conflict between the streaming service and music publishers Spotify has received much criticism recently for both increasing prices of subscription premiums and lack of sufficient payment to content producers on its platform.
