The 2021 racial slur incident led to Spotify and several country music awards bowing out of platforming the singer. The industry fallout was pretty universal, with radio stations stopping spins of his tracks, his label put him on ice, and Spotify refused to feature his songs on their country editorial playlists. Now in 2025, Wallen is setting new records. Spotify began reintegrating and even promoting Morgan Wallen’s music in 2023. His album One Thing at a Time dominated the charts that year and now he’s back with his fourth studio album I’m the Problem. That album has shattered records on Spotify, becoming the most-streamed country album of 2025 in just 24 hours. Spotify officially recognized the achievement, declaring that Wallen made country history yet again. I’m the Problem features 37 tracks, cut down from 50, Wallen reveals. “There were three styles on the last album that I had in my head, and I went with that same approach with this album,” Wallen says. “We had straight up country songs, which I always do, and then we had more of an alternative-indie approach on a few of them. Those songs end up being a little bit countrified, just because that’s who we are and that’s how we do them.” “And then the more cross-genre approach might end up on a multi-genre ratio station, just because of all the influences that I’ve had throughout my life, listening to every single type of music. I think I’ve stuck to that approach with I’m the Problem, getting an anchor song for each style and once we have those anchor songs dialed in, we fill up those buckets.” “We recorded around 50 songs for this album and ended up cutting 13,” Wallen reveals. “I feel like we accomplished what I had in mind, and a huge shout out to my close collaborators on this too. The track captivated international audiences and propelled JJ to victory—but Spotify data reveals other favorites among competitors. Born in Vienna and raised in Dubai, the 24-year-old JJ returned to Austria in 2016. Known for his soprano-range voice, JJ has performed at the Vienna State Opera and gained national attention through his appearance on Austria’s casting show Starmania. With his landmark win, JJ now joins the ranks of Eurovision legends, marking a new chapter in his career. Hot on Sweden’s heels was Estonia’s Tommy Cash, whose Europop hit “Espresso Macchiato” saw over 3.4 million streams throughout the week of the final. The Netherlands’ Claude followed in third place with “C’est La Vie” which saw 3.1 million streams in the final week, while Germany’s Abor & Tynna ranked fourth with “Baller” at 2.7 million streams. Rounding out the top five was Norway’s Kyle Alessandro with “Lighter” which also saw over 2.7 million streams during Eurovision week. Native Instruments has launched Circular, a new polyphonic sequencer which transforms single notes or chord progressions into “breathtaking rhythmic soundscapes”. Polyphonic sequencers are, of course, nothing new, so how does Circular work, and what sets it apart? READ MORE: Could this $5 reverb plugin transform your mixes? Circular utilises four independent layers, each a separate canvas for modulation. Users can control pitch, filter and other effects in real-time, and create “motion-rich scores with unparalleled speed and depth”. NI says every sound in Circular was designed with polyphonic aftertouch in mind, offering an “extremely expressive experience” on its Kontrol keyboards, as well as other controllers that support polyphonic aftertouch. Circular also boasts over 160 sound sources, ranging from felted pianos and guitars to hybrid synths and bowed metal. “Circular’s diverse palette encourages exploration, blending soft and harsh textures, acoustic and synthetic elements, and familiar and strange sounds,” Native Instruments says. Circular also presents the option to upload and transform your own sounds into evolving sequences, with 128 user slots for imported samples. Responsible for Circular’s design is Frank Elting, who also developed NI instruments Straylight, Pharlight and Ashlight. It was also created in collaboration with sound design agency The Most Human Colors, as well as sound designers including Samuel Estes – who has worked with Hans Zimmer – and The Solos, who have worked on trailers for the Godzilla franchise, Black Panther and Game of Thrones. Bread and butter are a classic pairing, but SOFI TUKKER aren't ones to follow the status quo. The duo have released their fourth studio album, butter, a delectable counterpart to 2024's steamy BREAD. While BREAD stands for "Be Really Energetic And Dance," butter dials down the tempo and raises the heat, melting listeners with sensual serenades and soulful soundscapes through a Brazilian lens. Comprising "nearly all organic elements," according to SOFI TUKKER's Sophie Hawley-Weld, butter is infused with Brazilian sonics ranging from "more classical tropical genres like bolero, bachata, samba-cançao, bossa nova and baião to more contemporary genres like reggae, Brazilian funk and samba-reggae." The Brazilian genre bossa nova is what Hawley-Weld was pursuing when she first met her SOFI TUKKER bandmate, Tucker Halpern, over a decade ago. We got our first glimpse way back in 2018 by virtue of "Brazilian Soul," a collaboration with The Knocks that has since amassed over 50 million streams on Spotify alone. Since then, the tandem has worked to subtly incorporate bossa nova into the chart-topping dance music we all know and love. Now, however, they've returned to where it all began in order to release something more substantial. "This whole album is a dream come true and it marks an important time in my life... my return to Brazil," Hawley-Weld said. Following the release of BREAD, Hawly-Weld and Halpern were put in touch with Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Marcio Arantes, who helped produce butter. He brought in Julio "Fejuca"Caesar (guitar), Daniel Conceição (percussion), Lulinha Alencar (accordion) and Will Bone (horns) to flesh out the album's instrumentals. Each rendition of the original is buttery smooth, with an eloquent fluidity from start to finish. Some standout tracks include "Throw Some Ass" and “Perfect Someone," which have been artistically melted into sultry live versions. "It was different from what Tuck and I are used to while making dance music, which tends to be very stop-and-start and loop-based," Hawley-Weld affirms. Getter has signed with United Talent Agency as he prepares to end his indefinite hiatus from the electronic music scene, his agent, Ben Hogan, announced on social media. The strategic representation deal hints at a substantial comeback for the virtuosic DJ and producer, whose last original electronic release was 2021's Some Creature EP. Getter, whose real name is Tanner Petulla, signaled a return last week after releasing an official remix of Mike Posner's hit debut single, "Cooler Than Me." Tour dates are also in the works, according to Hogan. "He’s back and we are coming to your city very soon," he wrote on Instagram. Despite his absence from electronic music production, Petulla has maintained a creative presence through his hip-hop alias Terror Reid, releasing the project's third album Manifesto in late-2024. He's also remained a prolific streamer by virtue of his beloved YouTube channel, on which he regularly dishes out music production tips and stories from his career. Spotify is facing criticism for allegedly hosting a number of ‘podcasts’ promoting illegal drug sales. Multiple outlets have written about and claimed credit for the takedowns. However, it appears that an X user named Lauren Balik was first to bring attention to the pill-plugging podcasts. Early last week, Balik posted Spotify screenshots displaying a portion of the relevant uploads. Though we previously touched on Spotify’s pharmaceutical-focused advertising expansion, it seems safe to say these uploads centered on illegal drugs. Per the mentioned screenshots, the so-called podcasts were entitled “Tramadol No Prescription Exclusive,” “Order Percocet Online Overnight,” “ORDER ADDERALL ONLINE ALL TIME,” and “Buy Tramadol Online with Holiday Discounts,” to name a few. Often running less than a minute apiece – and sometimes containing no audio whatsoever – the uploads directed one to the appropriate websites via their cover images and text descriptions, the screenshots show. Surprisingly, on the text side, the not-so-subtle operations seemingly included straight links. Meanwhile, bearing in mind the aforesaid “Buy Tramadol Online with Holiday Discounts” title, several of the podcasts had apparently been uploaded to Spotify months back. It probably doesn’t need saying, but the audio platform has removed many of the referenced uploads. Nevertheless, the trend predates the recent wave of media coverage and still hasn’t been completely halted. One needn’t look too hard to find lingering seconds-long “podcasts” (multiple uploaded way back in 2022) promoting websites purporting to sell mail-delivery drugs. A few of these sites claim to offer legal substances, and their exact status under the law is unclear. In any event, the uploads at hand certainly don’t constitute podcasts and would best be axed from the platform. Running with the point, the episode raises far-reaching questions about, among other things, Spotify’s content-moderation policies. When it comes to the service’s library, we’ve already covered the presence of adult-video “podcasts,” seemingly unauthorized music uploads classified as podcasts, and more. Following the idea to its logical conclusion, podcast volume is evidently front of mind for Spotify amid an aggressive video buildout – and stiff competition from YouTube in this area. Stated bluntly, then, Spotify says it hosts “nearly 7 million podcast titles,” but there’s room for speculation about the exact number of actual shows therein. This new product is designed to help DJs move and use their music more easily when they are performing. The new SanDisk DJ Flash Drive has been tailored to work with AlphaTheta and Pioneer DJ equipment, it is a product targeted specifically to DJs this time. A key feature is its fast speed, which can reach up to 1,000MB/s. This means that music files will load much quicker, helping DJs have smoother performances, loading times, among others. To make it easy to connect to different devices, the flash drive has two types of plugs: USB-C and the older USB-A. This allows DJs to use it with newer computers and older DJ equipment from AlphaTheta and Pioneer DJ. The drive can hold a lot of music, up to 1TB. Sir Elton John has slammed the UK government as “absolute losers” over its handling of artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright law, accusing ministers of siding with big tech firms at the expense of artists. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the music icon criticised Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government for rejecting proposals from the House of Lords that would have forced AI developers to disclose the copyrighted materials they use to train their models. As we approached the 2025 competition, I found myself without a clear favourite, which was a change from previous years. The final felt like an open playing field, where I sensed the strongest performance of the night would ultimately take home the prize. Thus eclipsing all the pre-event hype and betting odds. No matter how the results played out, I always look forward to sharing my personal highlights from this incredible annual international televised song competition. “Lighter” by Kyle Alessandro (Norway) Photo by Thor Håkan Ulstad What an intense experience for a nineteen-year-old! Kyle Alessandro, representing Norway, stepped onto the stage as the opening act of the ESC grand final—making history as the youngest artist ever to represent the country. His song, “Lighter,” is an electrifying, anthemic electro-pop gem. Though sung with impressive confidence, the track itself lacked distinct originality and memorability. Yet, the extraordinary staging more than compensated for these shortcomings. A solitary flickering flame ignited into a breathtaking display, engulfing the stage in a fiery ring, simulating a wildfire that rapidly spread around Kyle and his talented dancers. This dramatic visual made for a truly spectacular kickoff to the show. Early performance slots are notoriously tough when it comes to leaving a lasting impact on voters and the audience, and it’s a real disappointment that “Lighter” didn’t receive the recognition it deserved in the voting. Still, Kyle executed his performance with skill and charisma, and I’m genuinely excited to see where his post-Eurovision journey takes him. “Serving” by Miriana Conte (Malta) From the very beginning, Maltese artist Miriana Conte made her intentions unmistakably clear: she came to Eurovision to slay! With audacity and flair, she unleashed her cheeky anthem, the irresistibly iconic “Serving“. Throughout the Eurovision journey, this track quickly captured the hearts of fans, emerging as a standout favourite. Miriana’s strategy of pushing boundaries and leaving little to the imagination was almost flawless—until the EBU intervened, insisting on a minor but significant lyric change. But this diva was unshaken. Her boundless charisma teamed with striking visual elements ensured that the essence of “Serving” remained intact. Without a doubt, Miriana has caught the attention of the RuPaul Drag Race fandom. (Possibly part of a grander scheme she envisaged). Miriana for Mighty Hoopla 2026? It’s not just a possibility; it’s a foregone inevitability, I feel! “Wasted Love” by JJ (Austria) Photo by Pavla Hartmanová On sheer vocal mastery alone, the Austrian singer-songwriter JJ (aka Johannes Pietsch) clearly stood out among the Eurovision competitors. His popopera style is not only powerful but also refreshingly unique. Seamlessly transitioning between pop and opera, JJ makes it appear effortless. His performance of “Wasted Love” was nothing short of breathtaking. The striking contrast and his accomplished falsetto truly take your breath away; it’s a masterclass in vocal excellence. This was only heightened by the dramatic monochrome staging, which added an extra layer of impact. In my view, no one can rival the extraordinary vocal prowess that JJ displays. I found my winner in this performance, and it seems Europe agreed, voting JJ as the champion of Eurovision 2025. Even after the victory was sealed, his winners performance remained astonishing. Deeply emotional, JJ delivered yet another spellbinding show, featuring his mesmerising falsetto. This was definitive proof that Europe made the right choice. “Hallucination” by Sissal (Denmark) Denmark truly brought their A-game by sending Sissal to Eurovision in Basel, and I believe she was undeniably the standout female vocalist of the event. It’s utterly perplexing why the Eurovision audience overlooked “Hallucination.” I simply cannot fathom the public’s judgment of this incredible track and performance. The striking similarities to Loreen‘s music were impossible to miss. And you would think that the Eurovision audience would rally behind Sissal’s banger because of that. But for reasons I can’t understand, Europe didn’t embrace the idea of someone delivering such a fantastic homage to Loreen (perhaps they just have a preference for the original). This sentiment was painfully clear in the lack of support for this uplifting pop anthem, as Sissal’s mesmerising performance was shamefully ignored. It’s disheartening to see Eurovision be so harsh to you, Sissal. Just know that EQ Music Blog stands by you. The two companies have been locked in a years-long legal battle over the mobile giant’s App Store policies. Fortnite publisher Epic Games is further escalating its attempts to force Apple to allow its game onto the App Store. The game company submitted a new filing requesting Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to force Apple to accept “any compliant version of Fortnite onto the US storefront of the App Store.” Epic Games scored a major victory in its multi-year legal battle with Apple over the company’s App Store policies, namely the commissions Apple charges for in-app purchases. Judge Rogers ruled in Epic Games’ favor that Apple was in “willful violation” of an injunction of anticompetitive pricing, which seemingly set the stage for Fortnite’s return to Apple devices. But Apple said it would appeal the ruling. Further, Epic Games says the company is still blocking Fortnite from both the US App Store and preventing it from being released on the Epic Games store in Europe. As a result, Epic Games announced that Fortnite on iOS would be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it. Apple claims it hasn’t been blocking Fortnite outside the United States, and instead asked Epic Sweden to “resubmit the app update without including the US storefront of the App Store so as to not impact Fortnite in other geographies.” But that still begs the question: why block Fortnite in the US? According to a letter signed by Mark A. Perry, an attorney for Apple, the company has “determined not to take action on the Fortnite app submission until after the Ninth Circuit rules on our pending request for a partial stay of the new injunction.” Meanwhile, in Epic’s filing, it asserts that Apple is denying it the opportunity to “take advantage of the pro-competitive rules it helped usher in.” Further, Epic claims Apple is “punishing” the game publisher by “shutting it out of the very market it has fought so hard to open—while sending a clear message to other developers not to challenge Apple’s policies.” Apple’s letter states that if Epic “believes there is some factual or legal development that warrants further consideration of this position, please let us know in writing.” In the meantime, Apple intends to sit on its laurels on the matter until the court decides on its appeal.
