From Screens to Scenes: Afterlife’s No-Phone Policy at Hï Ibiza
Over the past couple of months, there has been a vast amount of debate going around the social sphere of banning phones at shows and placing other restrictions. It’s been briefly talked about by artists like John Summit, who recently expressed support for the idea on social media, highlighting the importance of fans being fully immersed in the live experience. James Hype has also weighed in on the debate, implementing a no-phone policy for his residency at Hï Ibiza. Now adding to this growing issue is Afterlife, who have announced a strict no-phone policy at their shows for the remainder of their residency at Hï Ibiza. The policy will be effective starting Thursday, 27th June, and will be enforced throughout the club and for the entire summer residency season. So whether you’re catching Chris Avantgarde close the club room with a darker and harder set or catching Tale of Us in the Theatre, you’ll have only the music, the visuals, the vibes, and other patrons ready to take you fully into the experience. Afterlife has gained popularity over the years for their stunning visuals that keep patrons enticed and in awe. The recent implementation of a no-phone policy aims to rekindle the special feeling of raving. It offers fans the chance to connect deeply with the immersive imagery and show created by Afterlife, free from the distractions of cell phone usage. This means you can fully bask in the graphics without being surrounded by bright phone screens. While it might be a controversial move since many people attend an Afterlife show to capture the stunning visuals, the intention behind the no-phone policy is to enhance the live experience. By encouraging attendees to immerse themselves in the moment, this shift aims to foster a deeper connection with the music, the ambiance, and the collective energy of the crowd, creating a more memorable and engaging atmosphere. What do you think about the no-phone policy at live events? Will it enhance your experience or take away from it? Share your thoughts—do you think this move will redefine the rave culture?

Bicep have unveiled “CHROMA 004 ROLA”
Bicep have today unveiled “CHROMA 004 ROLA”, the latest single to be taken from their ongoing CHROMA project — which comprises a record label, a series of curated events, a brand new and constantly evolving Bicep AV/DJ show, and a unique visual identity created in collaboration with David Rudnick and his Terrain studio, “ROLA” is another statement track from the duo: stripped-back and raw, with a distinct UK flavour, it was written, quite literally, with the dancefloor in mind as the opening track for their epic CHROMA takeover of London’s mammoth 15,000 capacity Drumsheds venue at the end of 2023. The single also received a first play from Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s New Music Daily Radio on release today. “We wanted something dark and heavy to play as our first tune, as a stark departure from the Live show,” explained Bicep. “It’s exactly what we’re wanting to achieve with CHROMA, a track written for the dancefloor with a specific idea in mind. It’s a chance for us to stretch our legs outside a traditional album cycle and focus purely on music for us djing. It feels really refreshing for us to write music and play it out that same week. It’s been really fun for us to let people hear a bit of a tougher sound from us.” Despite its genesis in the middle of a stormy December in London, “ROLA” is a track that has just as much impact on a warm summer night, or — as evidenced by their recent standout Coachella performances — a peak-time festival stage, and comes as the pair gear up for a double-slot at this year’s Glastonbury, where they will bring both their ‘Bicep presents CHROMA’ AV/DJ show, which headlines the IICON stage on the Thursday night, and a world exclusive performance under alias DOVE on the Levels stage. Bicep has also been announced as headliners at this year’s Wilderness Festival, will be closing out Creamfields Runway stage, are playing at MIRA — Barcelona’s Digital Arts Festival — in November, and will also play North American shows at Portola, CRSSD and Making Time. It’s the latest in a run of new music set for release on CHROMA throughout 2024, with the duo also hosting a number of ‘Bicep Present CHROMA’ takeovers, at London’s Finsbury Park and Brighton Beach next month, with lineups carefully curated by Bicep themselves. July 19th – Brighton Beach – w/ Palms Trax b2b Job Jobse, Ross From Friends, Kelly Lee Owens, Peach, Hammer b2b Ysanne August 2nd – Finsbury Park, London – w/ Joy Orbison, Baby T, Mia Koden, Skee Mask, SUCHI, Surusinghe Though billed as an AV/DJ performance, the ‘Bicep present CHROMA’ shows are actually more of a hybrid between DJ and live. The pair have several pedals and a drum machine they can use on stage, and there is a connection between the decks and the visuals team which allows the latter to see what is being played in real time adapting their visuals accordingly. This in turn gives Bicep the freedom to experiment with each performance, keeping the visuals and music working in tandem, no matter the direction they decide to take things. “ROLA” marks the fourth release in the CHROMA label series, and follows DOVE’s “Bi83”, a collaboration with Benjamin Damage (under their alias B.D.B) titled “L.A.V.A”, and inaugural Bicep CHROMA single “HELIUM”. Support for CHROMA has come from The Observer, Guardian, Resident Advisor, Billboard, MTV, FADER, Wonderland, NME, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Stereogum, Notion, Paste, The Line Of Best Fit, PopMatters, Brooklyn Vegan and many more. With Bicep also appears on the cover of Disco Pogo’s April Issue. Stream / Download here The post Bicep have unveiled “CHROMA 004 ROLA” appeared first on Decoded Magazine.

ODESZA's "The Last Goodbye" Farewell Morphs Into Groundbreaking Art Experience at the Gorge
As the curtain falls on their magnum opus tour, peering into the looking glass of ODESZA has never been more enticing. Ever the aesthetes, they're now preparing to shatter it by inviting their fans into a utopia of their own creation. ODESZA's Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight have announced "ECHOES," a first-of-its-kind art installation coming to their concerts at the Gorge Amphitheatre from July 4-6. The momentous shows will wrap up the "Finale" run of the duo's most recent tour, "The Last Goodbye," which many hold in high regard as the best live show of their career. They revealed "ECHOES" by virtue of the first episode of a four-pronged video series developed by UPROXX Studios. The ambitious installation is facilitated by the processing might of a Snapdragon-powered PC from Qualcomm, with whom Mills and Knight are collaborating to bring it to life alongside SETUP. "Building the 'Finale' set, we're doing things we haven't done before," Mills said. Fans will agree ODESZA's music is best experienced in the cradle of nature's grandeur. And there exists no venue more fitting for "ECHOES" than the idyllic Gorge, which is prevalently recognized among the nation's most scenic concert venues. How Opiuo and ASHEZ Synergized Their Sounds in Unique "Underground" EP
Just over a year ago, New Zealand-born producer Opiuo released "Bash Plate," a wonky bass collaboration with fellow Kiwi ASHEZ. But their time in the studio together was only just beginning. During Opiuo's magnum opus performance at Red Rocks with the Opulent Orchestra last May, the electronic music luminary may have tested out a few new IDs on the crowd. Upon release of the Opiuo & The Opulent Orchestra live album in November, "Bash Plate" and "Candy"—a then-new release with ASHEZ—were included as original bonus tracks. Fast-forward to this May, when the dynamic duo dropped the titular track of their EP. Equal parts ominous and alluring, "Underground" is reminiscent of the feeling you may have experienced back when you were younger—attending that dark and dingy warehouse rave that you snuck off to as a teen, but made you feel so alive. View the original article to see embedded media. EDM.com caught up with Opiuo and ASHEZ ahead of the release to discuss their relationship and the collaborative process throughout the creation of the Underground EP. Also ahead of the EP's release, "Bobby Dazzler" was delivered two weeks prior, pouring gasoline on the flames of anticipation for eager fans. The two talk about how this track was another unknown ID first rinsed at the Red Rocks spectacular. "It was really cool because we had a couple of songs [at that point]," Opiuo says. "I had a middle section of the set without the orchestra, and these songs were very fresh and we were kind of testing them out still." "I was in the crowd," ASHEZ adds about experiencing Opiuo playing out their collaborations live for the first time in front of thousands. "It was pretty awesome." View the original article to see embedded media. Up next, a departure from their usual sound, "Ricochet" launches listeners into an exploratory space and time warp. "The idea of it was to have multiple rhythmic patterns that were all different timings, and you couldn't really find the groove until the beat finally comes in," ASHEZ explains. "And then once the beat comes in, it all makes sense." Closing out the EP, "My Love" leaves listeners with entrancing feelings of devotion through inventive sonic expression with full synergy. "It was a good mix of us," Opiuo says. They both agreed that this one "felt more like a full collaboration... 100% both of us." "For this one, we just started writing and didn't have a direction," ASHEZ shares matter-of-factly. "It just slowly evolved into this." "We only made more of it when we were together," Opiuo adds when reflecting on their journey. "We never [worked on] it over the internet." Doing so, allowed for more emotion and heart to pour in. "It was so free-flowing." Fans can catch Opiuo and ASHEZ performing together in Denver for "a very special show" in August, according to the former. He said the show will provide "a more intimate warehouse style party debuting something brand new that [he's] never done before." The initiative, designed to empower young, rebellious creators to break through industry barriers, will offer 12 young creatives between the ages of 18-25 the chance to learn how to push their creative boundaries and forge their career paths without limits, directly from leading music industry mentors. This year’s programme, in collaboration with global creative studio network Pirate Studios, welcomes a new lineup of pioneering mentors. Each brings invaluable experience in disrupting the creative norm and carving their own path within the music industry. Spearheading the initiative is MOBO-nominated rapper, AntsLive, visionary dance music DJ and community studio founder Sherelle, all-round visual creative Ayshe Zaefoglu (AZ), and Burna Boy’s favourite film director Troy Roscoe. The Freeform Forum mentors will be matched with three aspiring creatives within their field, guiding them through the completion of a creative project over the three-month programme (July-October). Each mentor will draw on their experiences of navigating the industry as creative outsiders, offering one-to-one guidance on how to creatively stand out and avoid being forced into restrictive industry norms. The mentorship programme, which aims to help level the playing field for emerging creatives by empowering them to play by their own rules, will also offer mentees access to in-person meet-ups and networking sessions, skill development workshops and tailored creative and technical advice, to help participants turn their creative into fully fledged live projects. As part of the programme, applicants can sign up to take part in one of four creative categories: “Music Artist” – with AntsLive: For the stage performers, songwriters, or budding artists eager to learn topics such as stage presence, crafting an EP, and mastering your flow. “Music Production” – with Sherelle: For the beatmakers, mixers, and those looking to master both fields; Sherelle will be passing on her broad expertise, tailored towards projects such as creating an EP, or launching a mix-series. “Creative” – with AZ: For all those interested in visual storytelling; think photography, illustration and creative direction. Using budget-friendly digital tools and editing advice, mentees will be able to learn practical skills on how to build a stand-out brand & portfolio. “Filmmaking” – with Troy Roscoe: For any aspiring directors in music. Those wanting to take their music videos to the next level can learn the ins and outs of producing compelling visuals, from editing skills to honing that creative vision for a particular artist. The programme will conclude with one mentee receiving a £10,000 fund to help support their creative future and realise their visions. The winner will be appointed through a careful selection process, with one defining criteria; the project which pushes the most creative boundaries, bringing to life the very ethos of Freeform Forum. When asked about the programme, AntsLive commented, “Freeform Forum is for people who want to rip up the rule book and create something totally unique and different. I’m looking forward to taking my mentees through what this means to me as an artist, and how this can help them on their creative journey in the music industry.” This year, the Freeform Forum goes beyond mentorship with the new addition of a live-and-direct Discord chat forum. Open to the public, the forum encourages discussions, peer learning, and networking, helping to create a supportive community of like-minded individuals for creative exchange and inspiration. Elsewhere on the site, the ‘Skills Hub’, offers money-can’t-buy insights and practical tips from mentors and partners (including Pirate Studios) to navigate industry challenges, as well as tips specific to each creative category, such as creating a budget studio set at home, and where to get experience performing live. The Freeform Forum is part of a wider Relentless ‘Freeform’ banner, set up to support subcultural scenes and champion creative freedom. This year, the platform will bring to life personal projects by AntsLive and Sherelle and play a supporting role at Notting Hill Carnival and within the UK grassroots music scene. Deadmau5 Calls Spotify CEO a “complete fucking idiot”
In a recent post on his social media accounts, electronic music producer Deadmau5 delivered a scathing response to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek‘s controversial comments about the cost of creating content. The incident has reignited debates about artist compensation and the value of creative work in the digital streaming era. The Spark: Ek’s Tweet Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, sparked the controversy with a tweet that read: “Today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero, people can share an incredible amount of content. This has sparked my curiosity about the concept of long shelf life versus short shelf life.” Ek continued his thread, musing about the longevity of content: “While much of what we see and hear quickly becomes obsolete, there are timeless ideas or even pieces of music that can remain relevant for decades or even centuries. For example, we’re witnessing a resurgence of Stoicism, with many of Marcus Aurelius’s insights still resonating thousands of years later.” The Backlash: Deadmau5’s Fiery Response Deadmau5, known for his outspoken nature and advocacy for artists’ rights, didn’t mince words in his reply to Ek’s statement. The Grammy-nominated producer fired back on Instagram: “Incorrect. The cost of creating content was 25+ years of my life and much of those proceeds going to your company you complete fucking idiot.” This terse and pointed response encapsulates the frustration many artists feel toward streaming platforms and their perception of the creative process. Unpacking the Controversy Deadmau5’s reaction highlights several key issues: The True Cost of Content Creation: While digital tools have made music production more accessible, the statement “the cost of creating content being close to zero” grossly oversimplifies the reality. It overlooks the years of training, practice, and experience that go into becoming a professional musician. Time as an Investment: Deadmau5 emphasizes the time investment required to hone one’s craft. The “25+ years” he mentions represent a lifetime dedicated to music, which cannot be quantified solely in monetary terms. Artist Compensation: The reference to “proceeds going to your company” touches on the ongoing debate about fair compensation for artists on streaming platforms. Many musicians argue that the current royalty rates do not adequately reflect the value of their work. The Value of Expertise: By reducing content creation to a near-zero cost activity, Ek’s statement could be seen as devaluing the expertise and artistry involved in producing high-quality music. Industry Implications This exchange underscores the tension that exists in the music industry today. As streaming continues to dominate music consumption, the debate over fair compensation and the value of creative work is likely to intensify. Artists, industry professionals, and fans alike will be watching closely to see how this conversation evolves and whether it leads to any meaningful changes in how streaming platforms approach artist relationships and compensation models. One thing is clear: the path to harmonizing the interests of artists, platforms, and listeners in the digital age remains a complex and contentious issue, one that will require open dialogue and innovative solutions to resolve. Layla Benitez and Eynka Join Forces for “No Place To Go”
Layla Benitez and Eynka have worked together to make “No Place To Go,” out via Interstellar Recordings. This is Benitez’s first release with Insomniac Music Group. Layla Benitez is a well-known face on Insomniac’s stages and the regular DJ at the famous Space Miami. She brings her deep knowledge of rhythms that make people happy to this collaboration. Her work with Eynka, two well-known melodic heavyweights in the UK, offers a mix of styles that is both new and old. “No Place To Go” shows how well the artists can mix different types of music. The chorus of the song makes you want to sing along. It sounds like the indie dance music of the late 2000s, with bands like Empire of the Sun coming to mind. This nostalgic part perfectly matches Eynka’s signature sound. It is loud, razor-sharp melodies that have become their name in the UK scene. Benitez‘s natural understanding of how dance floors work and Eynka’s skill as a producer have come together to make a track that can be played on the radio or in clubs. The catchy singing over the pulsing beats make you want to move. The intricate melodic elements give the song depth and complexity that makes it worth listening to more than once. SG LEWIS AND BENJI B JOIN FLOWER POWER AT PACHA IBIZA
The stage is set for an unforgettable evening at Pacha Ibiza on June 22, as SG Lewis and Benji B are primed to bring their distinct brands of electronic disco, funk and fine-tuned selections to the island’s hottest club. The evening marks SG Lewis’ highly anticipated return to club-focused sounds, following the launch of his Forever Days label earlier this year. SG Lewis has carved out a niche in dance music like few others, channelling the feelgood bliss of heyday disco into his modern and polished dancefloor productions. While his 2023 LP AudioLust & HigherLove set the tone for contemporary radio-friendly disco, 2024 marks a refreshed appreciation for the dancefloor, demonstrated by his brand new EP with singer Tove Lo. Pairing with SG Lewis like a fine wine is London’s very own Benji B, who is known for his deep repertoire that spans genres and decades alike. His weekly radio show on BBC Radio One and personal vinyl collection totaling in the tens of thousands have helped pave the path for Benji to become one of the U.K.’s most influential and in-demand DJs today. Pacha Ibiza is set for a monumental season with world-renowned resident artists including CamelPhat, Bedouin, Robin Shulz, Solomun and Marco Carola appearing throughout the season. Dedicated to showcasing the world’s most sought-after artists, Pacha Ibiza will also host a series of limited events with artists such as Anitta, Jason Derulo, Tyga, Peggy Gou, Hugel, Roger Sanchez, ANOTR, Diplo, Köslch and Ida Engberg, Ben Böhmer, Barry Can’t Swim, Sven Väth, The Blessed Madonna, The Martinez Brothers, Pete Tong, Loco Dice, Purple Disco Machine, Dixon and Jimi Jules, Adriatique, Blond:ish, WhoMadeWho and many more. Pacha Ibiza’s legendary Flower Power party is reimagined for a new era in 2024 while preserving its core essence. Visitors are taken on an evocative journey through four distinct chapters, capturing the island’s free spirit: Holi Ibiza, Army of Flower, Circodelia and Future of Freedom. Evolving from its roots, today’s Flower Power celebrations blend nostalgia with contemporary happy house sounds, offering an immersive experience that transcends generations. Led by resident DJ Bora Uzer and a grand total of 74 guests including Grace Jones, Boy George and Róisín Murphy, Flower Power takes centre stage every Saturday night, throughout the 21 week season.
