DJ Mag’s Top 100 Festivals poll takes its fourth year for 2024 and the results are in. Tomorrowland is crowned #1 on the list through a record-breaking number of votes. Top 100 Festivals launched in 2019, with votes coming from DJs alone. In 2022, the vote moved to the public with Tomorrowland topping last year’s poll. It’s been a journey for festivals since COVID-19 shut things down and changed how the industry operates. The recording industry is intensifying its fight against unauthorized, AI-generated music with lawsuits targeting two leading services, Suno and Udio. Filed in separate U.S. district courts, the suits allege that the companies behind those programs have unlawfully exploited copyrighted sound recordings to train their AI-powered text-to-music models. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has reportedly spearheaded the lawsuits, representing the big three major labels: Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Records. The complaints emphasize that Suno and Udio have copied vast amounts of sound recordings without obtaining proper permissions, thus violating fundamental copyright laws. According to the complaints, AI-powered music generation services like Suno and Udio operate by ingesting massive datasets of popular music to create new outputs that mimic human sound recordings. This method, the lawsuits argue, not only infringes on copyright but also poses risks of flooding the market with AI-generated music, which could overshadow genuine works created by humans. The lawsuits seek to achieve several goals: court declarations that the services have infringed on copyrighted works, injunctions to prevent future infringements and financial damages for past violations. RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier stressed that while the music community is open to collaborating with responsible AI developers, unlicensed services pose a significant threat to the integrity and value of human creativity. "The music community has embraced AI and we are already partnering and collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge," Glazier said in a statement. "But we can only succeed if developers are willing to work together with us. Unlicensed services like Suno and Udio that claim it’s 'fair' to copy an artist's life's work and exploit it for their own profit without consent or pay set back the promise of genuinely innovative AI for us all."

And, accordingly, a record-breaking number of votes were recorded in the DJ Mag Top 100 Festivals poll this year. North America was the continent that submitted the most votes, followed by Europe, Asia, South America, Oceania and Africa. In terms of countries, the USA recorded the most votes in 2024, followed by the UK, India, Thailand, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Romania, China (which recorded votes via a dedicated voting platform) and Belgium. The festivals that appear in 2024’s top 10 remain largely unchanged from last year’s poll, with EDC Las Vegas, Untold Festival and Creamfields all gaining ground to place within the top five. Kappa FuturFestival is also up four spots to place in the top 10 for the first time. Elsewhere, Terminal V climbs 33 places to No. 44 as this year’s highest climber, and Untold Dubai places at No. 45 as 2024’s highest new entry. As suggested in the votes delivered above, North America and Europe dominate the top 20, with only Sunburn Festival — the highest placing festival in Asia at No. 11 — appearing from outside those two continents. As the winner of this year’s poll, Tomorrowland, is also the highest placing festival in Europe, with EDC Las Vegas the highest in North America at No. 2, Creamfields Chile the highest in South America at No. 73, Beyond The Valley the highest festival in Oceania at No. 92, and Oasis the top placed festival in Africa at No. 99.

Hard to believe that Fedde le Grand’s ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’ turns 18 today. This was the debut single for le Grand as a Tech House and Progressive House producer. The track peaked at #4 on the Dutch Top 40 and had two versions: the original at 6:32 and the radio edit at 2:32. Listening to the track, ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’, has a futuristic beat with a techno house vibe. The music video, set in the “near future, 2027,” tells a tale of fem-bots creating, testing, and bringing male androids to life. Released in 2006, this seemed like a distant future. The single went on to be Certified Gold in the UK, selling 400K copies, and won two awards: the 2007 MTV Australia Award for Best Dance Video and the 2007 International Dance Music Award for Best Underground Dance Track.

You know, we actually started as roommates. Kevin and I began making music together with the idea of doing DJ music. We just started doing writing sessions, all three of us together. We wrote our first song called “Visions.” The idea was like, “Oh, we could travel the world and make music, make big songs.” That was kind of what sparked the excitement for us. Your track “Sex” was a massive hit and brought you guys into the limelight. Can you tell us about the creation of the song and the impact it had on the world? Yeah, for sure. At the time, we were writing music every single day. We had spent seven hours on an idea that wasn’t working. After that, we decided to try one more and ended up writing “Sex” in about 30-45 minutes. Matt had the idea from the original hook of Salt-N-Pepa, and Kevi and I weren’t that familiar with it. It was cool to create without too many preconceived ideas. It just happened naturally, and sometimes working in that flow state without overthinking yields the best results. We were lucky with that one. Your music has evolved over the years. How do you decide which styles to incorporate into your tracks, and what mostly influences these decisions? A lot of it comes from the vocal and what type of vocal we think will fit. For example, we have a song called “Never Love You Again,” which has a house, soulful dance vibe. The vocal we got was from Little Big Town, and it inspired us to do a whole country album. Now, we’re doing a song with Jason Derulo, De la Ghetto, and Galantis. It has a Latin vibe, which inspired us to make a global dance track with Latin flavors. What’s your approach to choosing the artists you work with? For example, with Demi Lovato in the past? It’s always about who’s right for the song. With “No Promises,” we had a list of people we thought would be good, but Demi Lovato was our top choice. We were thrilled that she resonated with it and wanted to be part of it. It’s a process of thinking who would be best for the song, sending it to them, and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. Together Festival in Bangkok is renowned for its eclectic lineup. What are you most excited about for Together Festival, and how do you prepare your setlist for such a big event like this? We’re excited because it’s our first time in Thailand. It’s great to be part of a lineup with different styles, like Kayzo and Steve Angello. We don’t always get to play events with such a diverse lineup. We see Kayzo all the time back home, so it’s funny to be halfway across the world together. It’s a small world. What are some ways you keep your fans engaged and connected with your music and personal journeys? It’s all about interacting with people every day and giving our best in every show. We’re not the best at social media, but we try to give fans the best experience whenever they see us. What advice would you give to people starting out in the scene, as songwriters or performers? I often say this: try to do something unique that you’re passionate about. Don’t copy anyone else. If it feels unique to you, people will notice. Find a niche to stand out and be the first to create a new sound.

Non-profit organisation and record label Bridges For Music will return to ADE with their annual 500 KM charity cycle this October, continuing to incite social change through the power of music. Finding continued kinship at Amsterdam’s yearly event celebrating the strength of dance music’s unique community, the ride has proven to be the most highly anticipated charity cycle in the music industry with past participants including Richie Hawtin, Parallelle, Maga, Joris Voorn, Chris Lienbing, Pan-Pot, Juliet Fox, Jamiee, and more. Last year’s cycle brought together over 50 riders from different 15 countries to raise over 70K towards Bridges For Music’s mission to provide for under-serviced youth in South Africa. Powered by AlphaTheta and in partnership with ADE, all funds raised by the ride will help expand the capacity of Bridges’ programs by contributing to the construction of a new facility for younger kids in need. In addition, it will support the after-school program, which provides an essential space for children ages 8-18 to access creative education in music, dance and mindfulness. This year’s cycle will introduce a fresh challenge with a slightly updated route from London to Amsterdam. The 4-stage ride departs Sunday 13th October from the Resident Advisor HQ in Shoreditch and arrives at ADE Wednesday 16th October and will take riders through the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Jamie Kemp, Director of Toolroom Records summarises the impact of the cycle, “Simply put this is a life changing experience! I keep saying, I am not sure there is any other way I want to arrive at ADE…If you are thinking about doing it, just do it! You will be supported every km/mile/inch of the way.” The ride will save approximately 175kg of CO2 emissions that would ordinarily be produced for each flight from London to Amsterdam. This means that for each of the 50 riders, at least 8,750 kilograms of CO2 emissions will be saved. In return for supporting the cause and travelling to ADE with less environmental impact, those participating in the ride will receive an ADE Pro Pass, three nights accommodation in spa hotels along the route, tour guides and support, luggage transport, breakfast, lunch & dinner, energy snacks, and an official ADE jersey. Bikes can be returned to London in addition to a £1,500 entry fee paired with fundraising. Those who are unable to commit to the full duration of the cycle are welcome to join halfway or for one stage of the cycle tour. No prior cycling experience is required to complete the ride and those who don’t own their own bike can arrange for a rental. Memory Palace (Label Name) Tyler Coombs (Of The Trees) – Founder Jay Rogovin – General Manager Blake Coppelson – Label Manager Maya Nauriyal – Assistant Label Manager What’s your ethos? We strive to bring a higher standard of quality to the North American bass music scene and beyond, and to provide a platform for our artists to take creative risks and work with them to actualize conceptual releases and build worlds together. Tell us your origin story... I’ve had a lot of wonderful experiences working with labels throughout the years, but also a lot of not-so-wonderful experiences – and I think many of my peers would agree. I wanted to consolidate everything I have learned and apply it to my own approach while taking the opportunity to carve a new stylistic lane that I had always imagined and wanted to see in our scene. The concept for Memory Palace arose during the pandemic, when a lot of the music industry experienced a universal standstill, and all of that free time allowed me to zoom out and view everything from a nice safe distance. It wasn’t until last year that I was really able to start putting things into motion, having the support and team to bring everything to life. Where are you based? Tell us about your local scene. I’m currently based in Colorado and have been for the last 5 years. The scene here doesn’t need a whole lot of introduction; most would consider it the epicentre of bass music in the United States. I would certainly say most of my solo project’s growth snowballed after gaining a larger following in the region, and I’m hyped to be headlining two nights at Red Rocks this year – which is obviously a legendary venue. Do you have a specific sound or vibe? I wanted to be careful to avoid pigeonholing Memory Palace into a specific “sound” or genre. The biggest qualifier I look for when reviewing demos comes down to two specific factors; it has to be musically interesting and distinct amongst current trends of dance music – and to be exemplary of an artist’s ability to make all-around sonically remarkable compositions. I love the way electronic music sounds when it is polished and carefully crafted for sound systems, and I take that into consideration with every release. Do you have a regular artist roster? Nahh… Tell us about your A&R process… To qualify for demo submission, we typically request the artist sends us a vial their of blood to our compound and a bundle of their preferred herbs for the ceremonial burning. The listening room is unfortunately located in our headquarters deep within the Rocky Mountains, so it typically takes a few weeks for me to make the hike to the summit. What makes you different from other labels? Magic and Crystal Balls. What does it take to run a bass music label in 2024? I’ve been told it would be a massive undertaking, especially starting an artist-run label when I’m in the midst of a pretty busy schedule myself – but I think I wasn’t able to fully grasp that until we were already a few months into the initial rollout. It seems every step of the way is met with new challenges, especially when trying to break out of the more common methodologies for running an electronic label. The roadblocks never stop. That being said, I’m incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated and talented team alongside me, helping every step of the way – and sometimes that help is simply keeping me from losing my head from stress. I’m grateful that they’re down to dive in and take risks, meeting difficulties head-on; and we’re learning as we go. With every obstacle, the other side is waiting, and the reward of accomplishing something I’ve always wanted to do is unparalleled. What have you got coming up we should look out for? Our biggest objective at the moment is to move into larger-scale Memory Palace events. We’ve done a few festival stage takeovers and a pop-up event in Denver, but the goalposts keep moving. Now more than ever, I think a lot of people are looking to attend more intentional gatherings for music, which is exactly what we want to be doing. My dream is to eventually have the wherewithal to throw festivals in that sphere, with a large focus on fantastical engagement and immersion, activities outside of the typical party-forward environment of many events, and to build a super solid community over time. Last Friday, Charlotte de Witte took to Orchard Street, New York City and locked down the block outside EXTRA BUTTER for a set unlike any other. She pumped the one-hour guerilla-style performance full of adrenaline for a surprise live performance in the concrete jungle. As if that wasn’t enough, her impromptu appearance was the perfect way to celebrate her new single release ‘How You Move‘ from her Roar EP. From the beginning, Charlotte set the tone for her performance, opening with ‘Nitro Wordscape‘ by Wehbba. She follows with ‘Atom‘ by Sam Paganini and flows through with ‘Interconnection‘ by Enrico Sangiuliano. Dast’s ‘Parentesi‘ builds up the tension for the next round of sound. With two IDs yet to be identified and tracks from Raho, Mac Declos, KTRSX, and more to connect the set, there’s no better way to spend a day in New York than this. Plus, she also tucks in a few of her own singles ‘Roar‘ and ‘How You Move‘ from KNTXT. Fans thoroughly enjoyed bobbing and fist-pumping to her play, and so did she. You had onlookers even dancing from the fire escapes surrounding the street. From KNTXT decked out followers to the heroes fanning friends, everyone excitedly moved to Charlotte. Every inch of that street was covered, even if it meant climbing the Link NYC sign. Her sonic journey ebbed and flowed, giving the listeners a soundtrack for the city. She synced with the heartbeat of the city as her tracks pulsated acid and created everlasting mesmerizing energy. Powering through until the end of her set, she did not stop the gut-busting techno, ranging from 140 bpm to 147 bpm for the final finishers. What’s next for Charlotte? Over three years after the tragic death of SOPHIE, a posthumous album has been revealed. Last week, SOPHIE's official YouTube channel cryptically uploaded a silent, hourlong video teaser, sparking speculation among fans about a new project from the Scottish electronic music luminary. It's now been confirmed that a self-titled album will be released in September through Future Classic and her former label, Transgressive Records. "Sophie didn’t often speak publicly of her private life, preferring to put everything she wanted to articulate in her music," a statement from Transgressive reads. "It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most." Crafted by SOPHIE alongside her closest collaborators, the album was said to be nearing completion around the time of her untimely passing in 2021. Benny Long, SOPHIE's studio manager and trusted friend, took on the responsibility of leading the project to its completion. The announcement lands with its lead single featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, "Reason Why," a captivating track that seamlessly merges SOPHIE’s contributions with melodic dance-pop production, memorable vocal hooks and themes of resolutely forging one's own path. Presently, new social media accounts have emerged under the username MSMSMSM FOREVER, signaling a continued digital presence for the late producer as the album cycle unfolds. The self-titled LP follows SOPHIE's influential 2018 album, OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES. Marking the final recorded chapter of her musical legacy, the album is described as telling a life story that spans from mysterious beginnings, through the chaos of club life, to a state of euphoric transcendence. "Sophie gave all of herself to her music," the statement reads. "It’s here that she can always be found." SOPHIE's posthumous sophomore album is slated for release on September 27th, 2024.
