  1. FVDED In The Park's cancellation in 2023 dealt a major blow to Metro Vancouver’s struggling music scene. One year later, Holland Park in the neighboring city of Surrey hosted a celebration of life, not a funeral, for the summer music festival. FVDED went all-in on electronic dance music this year, phasing out its 50-50 hip-hop split to accommodate an elite lineup of DJs. It seems omitting world-renowned rappers like Future, Jack Harlow, G-Eazy and Young Thug freed space to build a brilliant EDM lineup. It was legitimately shocking to see a roster as deep as Swedish House Mafia, Kx5 (deadmau5 and Kaskade), Chase & Status, Chris Lake, Dom Dolla, Gryffin, John Summit, SLANDER and Zeds Dead on a two-day, three-stage poster. Holland Park was pulsing with electrifying beats from 2-11pm on July 5th and 6th. Two of the weekend's show-stealers, however, were Deathpact and EDM.com Class of 2022 superstar ISOxo. Deathpact—whichever member of the mysterious collective was present—would not be overshadowed by industry giants on the lineup. Diversity is one of the things I most look forward to at a major music festival and Deathpact whipped up the perfect formula. Their performance seamlessly sourced a wide breadth of sounds, including a highlight DMX remix, and encapsulated them within the experimental bass music that fans expect. There was never a dull moment during the hour-plus set, especially the surprise b2b with Dr. Fresch and Jon Casey. Deathpact at FVDED In The Park 2024.Red Rose Films I arrived at the Northwest Stage halfway through ISOxo’s set. I politely apologized my way through the crowd, fanning and misting sweaty festival-goers as a symbol of peace, to film a short video from a suitable sightline. The energy permeating between ISOxo and the audience was palpable. The brief minutes I spent in the crowd’s core were wonderfully overwhelming. I weaved my way out of the tent and found my two friends patiently waiting to regroup with others. I took their backpacks, wore them like a suit of transparent armor adorned with trinkets and playthings, and sent them into the storm to experience it firsthand. Speaking of the crowd, I'm happy to report that FVDED’s notoriously rough clientele was absent from this year's show. I’ve never attended prior iterations at Holland Park but was repeatedly warned about poor fan etiquette. It’s possible the omission of rap music welcomed a larger share of festival-goers who exercise the concert etiquette typically associated with ravers. I experienced a few unsavory encounters but people were generally polite. I had many pleasant interactions, including with several first-time ravers who were very enthusiastic about the weekend. Cell service was scarce once the festival was populated with approximately 24,000 people, according to Surrey Now-Leader, each day—except for Freedom mobile users who experienced a rare victory—but that’s not the fault of organizers. It was difficult reconnecting with friends who had peeled off from the group but that was remedied on Day 2 once we were acclimated and meeting points were established. Besides, there's plenty of fun to be had in solo adventures. FVDED In The Park 2024.Red Rose Films Everything else ran smoothly: lines were relatively short, food trucks were abundant and bathrooms and water stations were adequate. The forest area offered ample shade, hammocks and fairy lights for great photo ops. The addition of one or two water stations to help limit congestion at the most convenient locations would've been prudent and, if possible, additional shade near the mainstage. FVDED in the Park was a smashing success. The festival was on the other side of death’s door last year, but kicked it off its hinges and roared to life in 2024. The event reportedly sold out its 48,000 capacity, an encouraging sign for Western Canada’s music scene as British Columbia can finally point to a set of festivals that can stand up to Eastern Canada’s juggernauts. 2. Just like the giant butterflies hovering above Michael Bibi, a metamorphosis unfurled over the weekend in London, where the DJ headlined the largest electronic show in the city's history. The rare cancer that had once threatened to clip his own wings served a new purpose for Bibi, who on Saturday night shattered records at Finsbury Park by drawing over 45,000 attendees. The momentous hometown performance kicked off his celebratory "One Life" tour after a brutal six-month battle with CNS Lymphoma. "I am still very much in recovery," Bibi told Billboard prior to the show. "I'm only doing a very, very, very, very limited number of shows and making sure they are the best that they can possibly be." Mission accomplished. As lights danced and bodies swayed, Bibi unfolded a deliriously exuberant celebration of life snatched from the jaws of mortality. Massive LED screens projected aching footage from those dark days in the hospital as well as video montages including flashback scenes from the DJ's childhood with his father, who ultimately joined him onstage for a dramatic guitar solo. The night was a living, breathing affirmation that even in our darkest hours, the human spirit can emerge—not just intact, but radiant and ready to move the masses. 3. It’s a few months away yet, but in October STMPD RCRDS have planned an insane lineup for their label night that is already getting fans excited. The biggest names on the label performing, a special guest that’s yet to be announced, and the return of a seemingly forgotten pseudonym of Martin Garrix have all got people talking. Kicking off the night is YTRAM which is a pseudonym of Martin Garrix that a lot of people had forgotten about or maybe even haven’t heard of before. The name came from his early days DJing where he used the name DJ Marty, and YTRAM is simply Marty backwards. YTRAM first appeared in 2020 with the track ‘Make You Mine’ which was followed up with ‘Fire’ and ‘Alive’ which had somewhat of a tech house feel which was a far cry from the music Garrix had previously released. These would be the only releases and there’s been no talk of the YTRAM pseudonym since, but now it’s making a return which could mean there’s going to be some new music. Later on in the night Julian Jordan is on the lineup doing a B2B set with an artist whose name is blurred, but it is still fairly easy to identify that the blurred-out name is Dillon Francis which is very exciting. This is one of the many amazing B2B sets of the night including Justin Mylo and Mesto, DubVision and Matisse & Sadko, and Blinders & Vluarr to name a few. All the B2B sets have the perfect pairing of artists that can blend their styles together smoothly and should make for some incredible sets. The 2AM slot for the night is where the special guest will be performing and with it being an hour and a half it’s looking like it’ll be a big artist. There aren’t any rumours yet of who it could be though some fans are speculating that it might be Martin Garrix as his famous ‘plus, ex’ logo is alongside where ‘Special Guest’ is written. It’s certainly possible that it could be the legendary Dutch DJ doing a second set following on from his YTRAM performance at the start of the night but nothing is confirmed. One thing’s for sure, this is going to be one hell of an event.
  4. The picturesque Salzburgring in Austria once again transformed into an electronic music paradise as the Electric Love Festival returned for its 2024 edition from July 4-6th. This year’s event proved to be an unforgettable experience, showcasing world-class DJs, stunning production, and the unifying power of music against the backdrop of the breathtaking Austrian Alps. Photo credit: Nicolai Semrau A Thunderous Opening Electric Love Festival kicked off on Thursday with a bang, quite literally. The meticulously planned 16-minute opening ceremony set the tone for the entire weekend, featuring an impressive array of live performances that blended classical and electronic elements. The Philharmonie Salzburg, singer Christina Ortmeier, a local brass band, and the Bakip Borromäum choir provided a unique musical fusion, while breakdancer Luwam Russom, a Red Bull Dance Your Style finalist, wowed the crowd with gravity-defying moves. This year’s opening ceremony production was helmed by Salzburg artists Dan Lee and RageMode, with longtime curator Felice taking on an advisory role. The result was a spectacular show combining live music, dance, and cutting-edge technology, including the mesmerizing FLYING LIGHTS by FS/TR. As fireworks lit up the night sky, it was clear that Electric Love 2024 was going to be one for the books. Photo credit: Forin Schmid Star-Studded Lineup Across Six Stages With an expanded layout featuring six diverse stages, Electric Love 2024 catered to every electronic music fan’s taste. The main stage hosted EDM heavyweights like Armin van Buuren, The Chainsmokers, and Scooter on the opening night, setting a high bar for the rest of the weekend. Friday saw Boris Brejcha, Oliver Heldens, and ELF legend Timmy Trumpet grace the main stage, while the Hard Dance Valley pulsated with energy thanks to acts like Rebelion, Rooler, and Brennan Heart. The Club Circus, meanwhile, welcomed Koven, Luude, and Chase & Status for a bass-heavy takeover. Saturday’s lineup was equally impressive, featuring French superstar DJ Snake, techno wizard Reinier Zonneveld, and a live vocal performance from John Newman. The diversity of talent on display exemplified Electric Love’s commitment to representing the full spectrum of electronic music. Photo credit: Pikzelz New Additions and Festival Highlights A notable addition to this year’s festival was the BlueBoXX stage, showcasing local talent alongside international acts. Each day featured a different curator, with Salzburg’s own Toby Romeo hosting on Thursday and Slashy Disco taking the reins on Saturday. The festival also featured unique experiences like the ÖBB Roller Disco, playing the “worst of the 90s” and offering roller skate rentals, and The ORGANICS Beach, providing a relaxed daytime atmosphere for attendees to unwind. For those seeking an elevated experience, the CUPRA Platin VIP Lodge offered premium views and amenities throughout the weekend. Photo credit: Ricardo Hackl Overcoming Mother Nature While the majority of the festival went off without a hitch, Saturday presented an unexpected challenge. A severe thunderstorm with wind gusts up to 100 km/h forced organizers to delay the opening of the festival grounds. Thanks to swift action from the Electric Love team, local authorities, and the cooperation of attendees, the situation was handled safely and efficiently. Photo Credit: Nicolai Semrau A Testament to Community and Music Throughout the weekend, an estimated 180,000 visitors from around the world came together to share in their love of electronic music. The festival’s success in creating a sense of unity and joy, even in the face of challenging weather, speaks volumes about the power of music and the dedication of the Electronic Love community. The variety of camping options, including a new Comfort Camping area and an expanded Basic Camping with the largest on-site supermarket to date, ensured that attendees had a comfortable home base for their festival experience. Photo Credit: Ricardo Hackl Looking Ahead As the final notes faded and the last fireworks lit up the Salzburg sky, it was clear that Electric Love Festival 2024 had once again raised the bar for electronic music events. The combination of world-class talent, stunning production, and the breathtaking Alpine setting solidified Electric Love’s position as one of Europe’s premier festivals. As we reflect on the incredible moments from this year’s event, from the awe-inspiring opening ceremony to the resilience shown in the face of Saturday’s weather challenges, it’s clear that the spirit of Electric Love Festival is stronger than ever. This annual gathering in the heart of Austria continues to prove that music has the power to unite, inspire, and create unforgettable memories. Photography by: Jack Kimber Photography Ltd (www.jackkimberphotography.co.uk) For electronic music fans around the world, Electric Love Festival isn’t just an event – it’s a pilgrimage. And based on the success of the 2024 edition, that pilgrimage is set to continue for years to come.

Flash forward to 2024: Sparks has delivered his latest work, Alter Ego. This four-track EP showcases his signature super-charged sound, weaving brassy horns and crunchy lasers over raucous basslines. 20. Gone are the days, apparently, of earning your festival stripes through actual experiences. Now, you can buy the look of a seasoned raver without ever having to endure fan-clackers or dilapidated port-a-potties, thanks to Balenciaga. In a move that screams, "How do you do, fellow kids?" louder than Steve Buscemi in a backward cap, Balenciaga has released a "Raver Bracelet" at the astounding price of €3,500 (roughly $3,789 USD). Where haute couture meets dumpster dive, this overpriced piece of wrist candy is distressed "to imbue it with a worn and aged look" as if you've been marinating in sweat, glitter and questionable life choices at EDC. For the low, low price of a used car, you too can sport this "unique and intricate" scrap of fabric, perfect for fooling yourself into thinking you're still young enough to stay up past 10pm or for impressing absolutely no one at your next meeting. The band, which features in Balenciaga's Autumn/Winter 2024 catalog, is also available in a virtually indistinguishable version with metallic threading for €4,500. The bracelet's manufacturing process "requires a full day's work for each piece," according to the Balenciaga website. You can read more about the "Raver Bracelet" here. 21. Imagine you finally get the perfect spot in the crowd—but a giraffe comes out of nowhere and stands right in front of you. While most budding artists struggle to get their friends to leave their couches and see them perform, RAJA found the ultimate rave crew in a group of the planet's most beautiful animals. Promoting his new track, the aptly-titled "ANIMAL," the Afro-house and techno producer performed a DJ set live in Africa to a crowd of zebras, giraffes, lions, buffalo, antelopes and more. RAJA's video features gorgeous footage of the African wilderness as he sets up his equipment right in front of his "crowd." It pans out to show the beauty and scale of the natural wonders around the DJ and even cuts to footage of him walking with two small lions. "ANIMAL" serves as the first entry in a new series of live performances RAJA has dubbed "WAKANDA," which pulls inspiration from the fictional African nation of the same name that serves as the home of Black Panther in the Marvel Comics universe. There will be five chapters to the story: "MAMBA," "BABULANA," "MARSAI," "WAKANDA" and "ANIMAL," each of which RAJA promises will explore "the beauty, traditions, and rhythms of Africa like never before." The next chapter in RAJA's saga will be released on July 19th, 2024. You can check out a trailer below and find "ANIMAL" on streaming platforms here. View the original article to see embedded media. 23. You know those dirty, ragged wristbands we all bring home after trekking miles through heat, dirt, and mud after a multi-day camping festival? Every porta potty visit, every wave of dust kicked up by shufflers, every spilled drop of rain or Beatbox is forever etched on those beloved wristbands. They serve as a grimy memento of the blood, sweat, and tears we ravers put into every festival experience. Well apparently these wristbands have become so sought after, that Balenciaga is now selling a mock “Raver Bracelet” for €3,500. That’s right, our well-used and well-loved festival wristbands are now a “couture” accessory designers are capitalizing on. Balenciaga’s Raver Bracelet debuted during their Autumn/Winter 2024-25 haute couture collection showcase in Paris last week (July 1). Hand-embroidered and held together with a sterling silver 925 clasp, the bracelet is intentionally distressed to mimic a used festival wristband. The Raver Bracelet is available in pink, black, and blue polyester. According to the Balenciaga’s creative director Demn, wearing “this distressed version” requires “the skills of an artist to imbue it with a worn and aged look.” The fashion house adds that the manufacturing process requires “a full day’s work for each piece.” Each piece is handmade using various artisanal techniques, making it “unique and intricate,” which is why interested buyers must make a private appointment to purchase. The new accessory is currently available by appointment only for €3,500, with a second style option featuring metallic thread priced at €4,500. Your average festival wristband ranges anywhere from €300-€3,000 these days, depending on the event and the desired experience tier (GA, GA+, VIP, etc.). Balenciaga’s mock wristband tops any festival entry fee currently available. You could attend EDC Las Vegas as a VIP guest three times before hitting Balenciaga’s price point. If you want the real thing (and to save a bit of money), you have to put in the work like the rest of us ravers. Otherwise, here’s the link to book your appointment for the Balenciaga knockoff! 24. Streaming platforms are paying exorbitant sums of money to bad actors, claims research from Beatdapp, who revealed that roughly 10% of all music streams are fraudulent. That's according to a recent report from Sky News, which illuminated troubling figures from the music data tracking company. As it stands, all the money from subscriptions is placed into a large pool used to pay out artists per stream. This model has reportedly been exploited by scammers, whose methodology typically involves uploading a song and then implementing bots to stream it en masse before collecting royalties on the artificial plays. That fraudulent activity has resulted in up to $3 billion in revenue each year, per Beatdapp. The firm has now joined forces with Beatport with the hopes of amplifying their fraud detection technology to make sure on-platform streams are authentic. The merits for the company are crystal-clear—by detecting fraud, they won't be wasting money paying for inauthentic content. However, Beatport's charts open the door to benefits for non-artist users on the platform. With the elimination of fraudulent streams, Beatport's chart rankings will give users a better idea of who's organically trending in the industry through a "fair and transparent environment" devoid of the influence of pay-to-win bots. Helen Sartory, Beatport's Chief Revenue Officer, acknowledged that fraud is less of a problem on their platform as opposed to Spotify or Apple Music, but doubled down on these benefits. "We launched streaming products under the Beatport and Beatsource brands in 2019, and despite the fact that they have not historically been a target for streaming fraud, suspicious activity has been on the rise in recent months," Sartory said in a statement. "Although our fraud rates still remain half that of the industry average, we rely on accurate streaming data not only to preserve fair compensation to artists and labels, but also for track recommendations and analytics. We are excited to be able to work with Beatdapp to ensure that our data is representative of authentic listener engagement." You can learn more about Beatdapp's fraud detection technology here.
