“Outside Lands has always been my dream festival,” says Jackie Hollander, reflecting on her imminent debut at the San Francisco mega-fest. On Friday, August 9th, the Bay Area native will christen Outside Lands’ beloved SOMA Tent, effectively cutting the festival rope. During an undeniable milestone, Hollander will tend the same decks as fellow performers SIDEPIECE, TSHA, The Blessed Madonna, Seth Troxler, and the list goes on. Ahead of performing at the festival she grew up attending, Jackie Hollander sat down with Dancing Astronaut to discuss her summer tour, new music, her breakthrough release in “All My Friends Are Hot,” as well as what’s next for the burgeoning tastemaker. Once the pandemic dissolved and dance floors reopened, Jackie Hollander endured a steepening rise onto the scene. Currently, she boasts releases on top performing dance imprints, including Gorgon City‘s REALM Records, Nervous Records, W&O Street Tracks, Insomniac Records, and even a one-off placement, “Freak,” appearing on LP Giobbi‘s Femme House Vol. 2. Most recently, the producer turned in “The Life” on Insomniac’s IN / ROTATION sublabel. Says Hollander, “I actually finished [‘The Life’] in one session. If I don’t bang out a song, or at least the song’s template in one session, then usually I’ll move on to another idea. That’s what happened on ‘Pass You By’ with Ellis Moss; we literally finished the whole song in one session.” “My Life” marks Hollander’s fifth single of 2024. Next on the release schedule is “Pass You By,” a joint effort alongside Experts Only signee Ellis Moss. The crowd tested ID is officially due August 9th, the same day Hollander will open at Outside Lands. As the only US artist on Palm Artists’ exclusive UK roster, Hollander finds herself frequenting London to work on music. There, she and Moss exported the final cut of “Pass You By” after what had been a “magical session.” “I think [Ellis] is absolutely genius,” Hollander emphasized, adding, “It was a big goal of mine to collaborate. My team got in touch with him, and we finished [‘Pass You By’] in one day. It’s like my favorite song I’ve ever made. I’m going back [to London] in December to do a two-week [writing] camp, just me and him, making songs every day… It’ll be so fun.” Before “My Life” and the tour announcement, Hollander delivered what would become her highest streaming song to date. Landing on Mike Weiss’ historic dance music label, Nervous Records, “All My Friends Are Hot” caught fire. Hollander recalls, “‘All My Friends’ actually took a long time to finish. I had to hone in and really work hard on it. Before the release, I was getting so many DMs about it after playing it live. It would go off. It’s fun to test your songs, either before they’re signed or before they come out. ‘My Life’ also got insane reactions. Ultimately, it’s a bit of a guessing game. You never really know who’s going to connect once the song comes out. But that’s part of the game; let’s throw some shit out there and see what happens!” On July 3rd, Hollander took to Instagram to announce her first ever summer tour. Ten days later, she kicked off a slew of high-profile gigs at Echostage for Elrow‘s Washington D.C. showcase. Now donning a sizeable uptick in monthly listeners, Hollander continued to revel in her newly conspicuous catalog at Pioneer Square in Seattle, and then in San Francisco—her home base—where she performed at Gorgon City’s Midway Block Party. “In Seattle, a bunch of people ran up to the front when I got onstage. For the first time, I felt like people knew me. It was so cool to see who my fans are; they’re all people I would hang out with! The most amazing people with the best energy.” A product of the Oakland rave scene, Jackie Hollander knows the importance of connecting with the dance floor, “I think it’s so important because those are the moments I always remember. People deserve a connection that makes them go, ‘Oh, they’re actually a person and not just a robot!” After Outside Lands, Hollander plans to bring that same energy to appearances at The Brooklyn Mirage, The Concourse Project, Nocturnal Wonderland, and other impressionable live settings. They’re artists. They’re leaders of the industry. That’s what I hope to grow into. They’re my role models. Looking down the line, she plans to launch her own record label in “three years'” time. While unsure of the unborn imprint’s name, Hollander maintains a clear conceptual grasp of what her brand should and will embody, “I don’t know what it’s going to be called, but I know what it will be about.” She adds, “I love combining light and dark. I want the imagery of that. I would want my events to be held at sunrise or sunset. Maybe you arrive while the sun’s going down, when it’s more chill. Then it gets dark, and you get all these harder artists, rather than the more chill up-and-coming artists that played in the beginning. I want to incorporate nature in that way. I want that to be my thing. We’re already developing visuals.” With new music around the corner and published show dates through EDC Orland on November 8th, Jackie Hollander is on the brink of a fruitful latter half of 2024. Mport is translating comedy into dubstep gold with his new EP, sampling a wide variety of beloved films and shows ranging from Kill Tony to Spongebob Squarepants to family-favorite Pixar films like Finding Nemo. "This longer EP is based around sampling some of my favorite scenes and media," Mport explains. "Everything I used has made me belly-laugh to tears at some point, personally, so I wanted to add my production twist on them. Also, it makes for great live visuals." The voices of beloved cartoon characters Spongebob and Patrick can be heard in "Wumbology" early in the EP, their distinct rapport strategically broken apart and spliced together over a head-bobbing beat. Meanwhile, "Hot Rod (Cool Beans)" samples two scenes from the film Hot Rod, with Mport's personal addition of experimental bass and a horn section. Dodgeball and Beavis & Butthead join the hilarity in "The 5 D's" and "Whoa Fire," respectively. Shambhala has long been Western Canada's—and arguably the entire country's—crown jewel for electronic dance music getaways. That reputation holds firm after welcoming 20,000 people to its 25th anniversary weekend from July 26-29. A poorly kept secret tucked between the river and trees, there's a reason "Welcome Home" is a common phrase among Shambha-lifers and newcomers alike. Friendly faces constantly greet you, whether you're starting or ending your day at 8am. What separates Shambhala from most camping festivals of its scale is the logistics. Once you’re in, you’re in. There's no queue between the campsite and the festival grounds—you’re free to go as you please. This creates a holistic experience wherein you feel like you’re living in the Salmo River Ranch ecosystem for the duration of your stay, which can last a week for some guests. Take Sunday, for example. Some early birds and I happily dragged our fatigued bodies to the Living Room stage for LSDREAM’s "Lightcode" set, an hourlong meditative sound bath that definitely didn’t unearth suppressed childhood trauma. It’s okay—I was better for it. Now spiritually cleansed, we made our way to the river, which runs along the side of the festival grounds, to cool off and unwind. A short walk to camp for dinner and a nap revitalized us for the long night ahead. There are countless high-quality food vendors to keep you fueled during the 18 to 20 hours of music daily, but whipping out a breakfast burrito from my fanny pack and chowing down at a 3am set is the freedom for which my frugal spirit is here. Shambhala is an independently owned music festival produced on land belonging to its owners. Unlike many festivals, the stages aren’t torn down each year. They are permanent installations that are improved annually. This creates familiarity and curiosity as you revisit Pagoda’s laser-bathed front porch, Village’s coliseum-like halls or Fractal Forest’s endless maze of lights. Fractal Forest received the biggest makeover in 2024. The jaw-dropping, all-encompassing forest stage was upgraded with more lights and a bigger, higher elevated platform. Fractal was unique for its 360° vantage point, whereby crowds could watch from all angles. It’s still technically a 360° presentation, but the updated design pushed the stage off-center. The location and higher elevation made it difficult to see from behind the artist; it’s a net positive that improves several aspects of Fractal Forest while taking away a component that affects a minority of fans. Elsewhere, Rabbit Hole, previously one of Shambs' many hidden areas, was renovated into a small, dedicated stage to add to the festival's seemingly endless options for enjoying music. Shambhala 2024’s biggest success story is its entry process. The lines to get into the camping grounds had been notoriously grueling—you can spend between four and 12 hours waiting with your car to enter the campsites. I was unprepared for my first excursion in 2022 and strongly considered not returning after dry-aging in the sun for what felt like an eternity. AMP stage at ShambhalaRed Rose Films Some suggest bringing canopies for the line or driving overnight to avoid the sun. While I appreciate the spirit of the 20,000 people who do anything to get to Shambhala, I don’t think making camping arrangements for a queue or driving sleep-deprived to escape the heat are appropriate solutions. I am ecstatic to report that Shambhala pulverized those concerns this year. I was bewildered—and honestly still am—to arrive on Thursday night and find a wait time of 10 minutes. Shambhala not only managed to improve their dreaded queues, but they also eradicated the problem entirely. Asking around, it seems a combination of factors radically improved the process. Organizers opened two points of entry, doubled its manpower and streamlined their security process to fix what I considered their one crucial weakness. We’ve made it pretty far without discussing an important component in the “music festival” dynamic: the music. I was admittedly underwhelmed when the lineup was announced. The poster had heavy-hitters, including Chromeo, Dillon Francis, Disclosure, DJ Pee .Wee (Anderson .Paak), Excision and Subtronics, but the lineup featured many names we’ve seen at Shambhala in recent years and didn’t quite measure up to comparable summer festivals. Longtime visitors might, however, insist that Shambhala is about much more than a lineup. The set times, excluding Sunday, weren’t incredibly competitive and that allowed me to experience Shambhala with a wonderful presentness. I moved from stage to stage unencumbered by who was playing where. If I struck a good vibe, I freely enjoyed it without concern for what came next. It also cleared time to explore all the whimsical hidden details tucked out of sight. It was incredibly freeing. Village stage at Shambhala.Red Rose Films Dimension, Excision and Subtronics shook the foundations of Village, Chromeo and Pee .Wee were the lives of the party at Fractal Forest, Zingara tore the roof off Pagoda and San Holo thrilled at AMP. One of Shambhala’s great traditions is its surprise sets. We were treated this year to a surprise sunrise b2b between Subtronics and Tape B. This was warmly received considering the two dubstep stars faced stiff competition earlier that evening. The festival doubled up on special reveals. Eyebrows were raised when CloZee and LSDREAM were scheduled for separate sets at Pagoda considering the success of their supergroup, LSZEE. Well, they heard the feedback and treated fans to an unannounced LSZEE set that ranks among the best I’ve ever seen. Other highlights included The Funk Hunters, AHEE and SkiiTour. All said and done, Shambhala returned to the Salmo River Ranch in B.C. for its silver anniversary with a weekend that lived up to the occasion. The festival continues to build on its strengths, patch its weaknesses and curate some of the best experiences and fan culture in the global EDM community. Cheers to another 25 years. Already and heavyweight in the techno industry, VNTM needs no introduction. From the canal city of Amsterdam, the artist brings us back to the golden era of melodic techno with Discharge. Having a name for himself with releases such as Dark Knight in 2020 and being featured on Afterlife as well, VNTM in 2023 launched a new project: Open Source. The aim is to release, not only the original mix but also the complete stems of the track. But what are the stems? Stems are a type of audio file that breaks down a complete track into individual mixes. This allows creators to control each of the particular mixes for its production. usually, they separated in melody, drums, vocal, and baseline but VNTM with his Open Source project went above and beyond. Discharge‘s stems include the whole production, from the main lead to the atmospheric sounds. In total, you have the 29 different audio tracks that make up the song. These open source releases are all part of a bigger project that allow users to not only play the music, but download the stems remix, sample and do whatever you feel like doing to them. By buying the pack you get a waiver granting you the rights to tweak and modify the music by any means. VNTM’s Open Source Project includes 12 releases on every first Friday of the next 12 months. On Saturday, July 27th, Secret Garden Party‘s 2024 Roots Edition delivered an unprecedented show which perfectly encapsulated their creative contribution and legacy. After 25 years, the Secret Garden Party announced to festival-goers that this would be their final year in its current guise, marking their farewell and the end of an era not only for SGP but for the countless festival-goers who have attended over the years. In true SGP style, the spectacle conveyed a deeper message to fans, culminating in a state-of-the-art drone show, designed by Celestial in collaboration with SGP, a creative production of founder Fred Fellowes and Secret Design’s Nick Carter, titled ‘Creativity Unchained.’ This was followed by a ‘That’s Showbiz, Baby’ extravaganza, produced by SGP in collaboration with Acme FX and Immersive International. The spectacle underscored the impact of corporate takeovers and greed, which have made it difficult for independent events and artists to thrive in today’s scene. It delivered a powerful message to inspire, protect, and preserve creative expression from corruption and the stranglehold of major players in the music industry. The extravaganza peaked in spectacular fashion, with the symbolic ‘Burning of the Main Stage,’ an urgent call for immediate change, signifying that from the ashes, something new will grow in the garden. This year’s event was a true showcase of collaboration, with independent festivals and event promoters uniting in support. Shindig, NTIA, Cirque du Soul, and many others provided additional backing in the weeks leading up to SGP. This has become a global movement to save our music scene, demonstrating the love and unity of people rooting for a cause that matters deeply to them through positive connection and creative self expression. Following the recent international festival crisis, Secret Garden Party will undergo a transformation this year which is set to redefine the festival model, emphasising the need for collaboration and unity amongst independent organisers. In response to the increasing number of venue closures and festival cancellations, Secret Garden Party aims to foster a collective effort by inviting other events and promoters to the SGP site in the festival’s absence, to join in their vision with an aim to revitalise and strengthen the festival scene together. Fred Fellowes – Head Gardener & Founder highlights: “At this point, we’ve said everything that needs to be said. We’ve done what we said we would do. That’s the party we created, and that speaks for itself.” Reflecting on the successful event, the programming and performances were hailed as groundbreaking. Ren’s first show in five years was a resounding success, featuring a two-part, two-hour performance by the award-winning artist. The show included live strings, theatrical performances, and a unique collaboration with Chinchilla and Romain Axisa joining Ren on stage. Disciples & Delilah – If I Stay Genre: House, Progressive House Great news for the Dance world happened this week, as Dance music group Disciples came back. Wehbba – Revelation Genre: Techno (Peak-Time) Wehbba made his highly anticipated return to Drumcode this week with the release of his Awaken EP. It had been eighteen months since his last EP on the label, so the anticipation for the Brazilian producer was through the roof. A two-tracker of sorts, it included the title track, ‘Awaken’, and the B-side, ‘Revelation‘. ‘Revelation’ takes listeners on a journey through trippy Techno landscapes, incorporating Eastern scales and drawing influence from ritualistic ceremonies of Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures. The track is a testament to Wehbba’s ability to blend different musical elements and create a unique sonic experience that is both captivating and hypnotic. Audien feat. Jeoff Harris – Living in Color Genre: Progressive House, Dance Pop Grammy-nominated, gold-certified DJ and producer Audien has unveiled his first single, ‘Living in Color,’ off his forthcoming album, HARMONY. Known for his production prowess and uplifting melodies, he has established himself as an icon in the Dance community, garnering the support of industry veterans such as Tiësto, Above & Beyond, and Zedd, and locking in remixes for leaders such as Bastille and Coldplay. The world’s largest Dance music festival revealed its numbers for the past year — and to say they’re good doesn’t cut it. WeAreOne.World, the company behind the world-famous Tomorrowland festival, reported a net profit of €8.4 million in 2023. While this is lower than the exceptional €24 million earned in 2022 (which included an extra festival weekend to compensate for pandemic years), it’s a significant improvement over 2019’s pre-pandemic profit of €4.6 million — value which is more comparable to 2023 than 2022 is, due to that extra weekend. The company’s overall revenue in 2023 reached €129 million, down from €164 million in 2022 due to the absence of the additional festival weekend. However, compared to 2019’s €112 million, the revenue indicates a healthy post-pandemic recovery. Expansion, Diversification And Growth WeAreOne.World is leveraging the fame of Tomorrowland to expand its reach. This includes organizing sister festivals in the French Alps and Brazil (Tomorrowland Winter and Brasil), along with events and activities in various countries like Colombia, Mexico, and Dubai (such as the CORE events). The company is also exploring Thailand as a potential future location for a Tomorrowland edition, as we’ve talked about in the past. Beyond festivals and events, WeAreOne.World is diversifying its business ventures. They have established business units dedicated to music (the Tomorrowland Music record label), artist management, fashion, media (radio and fantasy books), and the Tomorrowland DJ Academy, which aims to cultivate new DJ talent. As for the profits generated, WeAreOne.World plans to reinvest most of it for future growth. This includes relocating to a new office in Antwerp and further developing its various projects. The company emphasizes that the success of Tomorrowland serves as a springboard for their broader expansion plans. Finally, it’s a good thing to note the economic impact of Tomorrowland on the local Belgian economy. The 2023 festival involved over 1,200 Belgian suppliers, generating an estimated 557 jobs and €37 million in additional economic activity for the region. Additionally, the event is estimated to have contributed to a €281 million increase in overall economic activity and the creation of 1,900 full-time jobs.
