EDMTunes New Music Friday – Week 33
Listen to the most flavour-packed tracks we discovered this week. Music makes the world go round. And in that regard, we’re constantly on the lookout for new, exciting tunes to share with our audience. We’ve found some that cause goosebumps, and make you open your eyes and get up from your chair to dance. So put on your best pair of headphones, or turn up your speakers, and enjoy this week’s New Music Friday. Here are our top picks for the best music we came across this week, in no particular order. And remember, if you would like to contact us for a chance to feature your track on our page, head over to this link right here. Ben Böhmer – Rust Genre: Melodic House This week we were graced by the award-winning artist and producer Ben Böhmer, who unveiled yet another wonderful single, entitled ‘Rust.’ The track continues the lead-up to Böhmer’s third studio album, Bloom, arriving September 27 via Ninja Tune. This one is a treat for all of us who have been following him for years. While Ben’s previous singles serve as a stark departure from his signature sound, ‘Rust’ is a callback for his fans who adore the sound of his previous projects. Begin Again (2021) and Breathing (2019) earned Ben immense success, and this single is a nod to the dreamy, Melodic House sound we all associate with him. Tiago Dima & Will Vance – Air And Darkness Genre: Organic House, Melodic House We’ve been digging the MMR releases lately. They’re developing a lovely sound that spans all things Melodic, Organic, above and below. And this time we’ve got Will Vance — an old friend — behind the decks. He’s joined Tulum sensation Tiago Dima on a beautiful release, simply titled ‘Air And Darkness‘. This one is a beautiful piece of Organic. So organic, in fact, the bass is much more analogue and real than it is digital and programmed. Can I just say, for the record, that bell playing through the break, really reminds us of that one DKC track, ‘Aquatic Ambience’. The nostalgia paired with the sheer nature of this record carved a spot for itself in our hearts. Are you a producer and you want your song featured on EDMTunes? Follow this link right here. Porter Robinson feat. Amy Millan – Hollowheart Genre: Ambient / Electronica One of the defining albums of EDM, one of the core ingredients of what we are today as a genre, that’s Worlds to us, Porter Robinson‘s beloved artist album. This week, his debut LP turned 10. And in true Porter fashion, he finally released the “lost” 13th track that never made it onto Worlds. Four years ago, out of the blue, Porter tweeted that he uploaded another track that he created in 2012, ‘Shepherdess / She Heals Everything‘, for the 6th anniversary. Along with that, he explained that he would release ‘Hollowheart‘, one of the album’s declined tunes, for its tenth birthday. And here we are, enjoying a lovely Ambient piece — with lossless free download. What more could you ask for?! Porter Robinson · Hollowheart ft. Amy Millan (From the Worlds 10th Anniversary Edition) Peggy Gou – Find The Way Genre: Tech House, House Dropping just ahead of her biggest headline show to date at London’s Gunnersbury Park this weekend, the artist, producer, DJ and cultural trailblazer Peggy Gou returned with her latest ‘Find The Way‘ on Gudu Records. The first new track since the release of her debut album I Hear You, this latest single builds on her recent sonic terrain. Making a midsummer bid for song of the season, on ‘Find The Way’ Gou addictively blends her featherlight breezy vocals with a balmy, technicolour 90s House beat lush with mellow keys, acid-tinged synths and hypnotic basslines. The year 2024 has been a huge one for Gou already with the release of her hotly anticipated debut album I Hear You on XL Recordings in June. Final Words Stay tuned, for more of our compilations every Friday — based on demand. Are you a producer and you’d like to be featured in the next edition of our New Music Fridays? Then head over to this link right here, you champ. And be sure to follow EDMTunes for all the latest news and reviews that revolve around our beloved Electronic Dance Music! Cascada’s “Everytime We Touch” Turns 19 Years Old
On August 16, 2005, the world was introduced to a track that would become a defining anthem of the dance scene: “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada. The song didn’t just top charts—it became a cultural phenomenon that would forever change electronic dance music. “Everytime We Touch” wasn’t just another song, it was a game-changer. Cascada, fronted by singer Natalie Horler and producers DJ Manian and Yanou, delivered an anthem that caught on with listeners worldwide. It dominated radio stations, clubs, and parties across the globe. The single quickly climbed the charts, reaching top positions in several countries, including the UK, US, and throughout Europe. Its success was further amplified by its music video, which featured amazing energy and an upbeat vibe. While “Everytime We Touch” is often associated with the 2000s dance scene, its influence on EDM cannot be overstated. The song helped bridge the gap between mainstream pop and electronic music, bringing dance music to a wider audience. Before Cascada’s hit, EDM was primarily an underground genre in clubs and festivals, but rarely breaking into the mainstream. “Everytime We Touch” was one of the tracks that changed that narrative. Cascada’s success paved the way for a new wave of electronic artists to emerge and find commercial success. The song’ became a blueprint for future EDM hits, influencing artists and producers across the genre. In the years that followed, the fusion of pop and EDM would become a dominant force in the music industry, with artists like Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and The Chainsmokers continuing to blur the lines between the two genres. Burners Take Massive Losses to Sell Unwanted Burning Man Tickets
Burning Man‘s annual ticket scramble has taken an unexpected turn this year, with attendees facing significant financial losses as they desperately try to offload unwanted passes. Traditionally, Burning Man tickets have been highly sought after, with resale prices often surpassing face value. But this isn’t a typical year: Burning Man still hasn’t sold out online, the organization hawked tickets in-person for the first time since 2011 and Facebook is flooded with people desperately trying to offload extra passes. Long-time attendees, known as Burners, are reeling from the sudden drop in value. Many have found themselves in the unenviable position of selling their tickets at a substantial loss, with some reporting losses of hundreds of dollars. Theme camps, which often purchase multiple tickets in advance, are particularly hard hit. The reasons behind the plummeting ticket prices are still unclear. While Burning Man organizers attribute the decline to global economic trends and a shift in last-minute ticket buying, many Burners believe the issue lies with the organization’s handling of ticket sales. Last year’s Burning Man event was marred by severe weather conditions and logistical challenges, leading to a prolonged evacuation. The traumatic experience may have deterred some long-time attendees from returning this year, contributing to the overall drop in ticket sales. Additionally, the negative press surrounding the event might have discouraged potential first-time attendees, further impacting demand. As the event approaches, some attendees are exploring creative alternatives to selling their tickets, such as bartering for goods or services. Others are expressing concerns about the influx of last-minute attendees, fearing a potential decline in the event’s unique culture and community spirit. With the Burning Man experience facing unprecedented challenges, the future of this iconic event remains uncertain. More on this news and details here. Metodi Hristov – Build To Destroy EP
Drumcode welcomes another debutant to the label, with Metodi Hristov‘s stunning Build to Destroy EP. The Bulgarian DJ/producer has been building a solid body of work stretching back a decade. Those include quality drops on labels like Terminal M, Octopus, and Filth on Acid. It’s no wonder he finally made it onto Adam Beyer’s radar. In turn, Hristov finally gets to see his chance at a release on Drumcode. The EP leads with ‘Flatline’, a sexy techno track with bags of groove and charisma. From the start, it is driven by dreamy synth lines and an arresting vocal, while balancing silky and punchy elements with a deft ease. Next, ‘Build to Destroy’ is a bulldozing beauty that kickstarts with plenty of low-end energy. Then, it moves into a succession of atmosphere-laden bass stabs and effects of varying rhythms and intensity. It’s a dynamic cut that repeatedly piques your interest to the end. This is a solid addition to the Drumcode discography. What’s more, Bart Skils liked the tracks so much that he even linked Hristov to Beyer immediately! It was a beautiful moment when Adam wrote to me and asked if I’d like to release them on DC. My head was in the clouds and I will always be grateful to Bart for what he has done for me. I’ve always wanted to release on Drumcode, but it was not a fixed plan till October last year when I fully embraced the idea and nailed it with my heart and mind. I ended up in a long three-month studio session from which I extracted some of the best productions I’ve made in my career Metodi Hristov, on Build To Destroy EP Bulgarian-based Metodi Hristov wins the fans of electronic music with his truly unique style. He ranges from the darker side of tech house to the raw house beats. Plus, he loves to experiment and mix up different music styles and garners support from industry stalwarts like Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Joris Voorn, Mendo, Andre Crom, Mark Knight, Jay Lumen, Pan-Pot, Ramon Tapia, and Audiojack. Keep an eye out on this rising star. We may just see more releases from him. James Hype Responds to Pre-Recorded Set Claims: "I Think This Narrative Is Damaging for the Culture"
From spinning records to setting them straight, James Hype has had enough of fans falsely claiming he does not DJ live. His recent clash with skeptics and rebuttal to such claims highlight a persistent issue in the electronic music community: accusations of "fake DJing" continue to plague even the most talented artists. That troubling trend, Hype says, is "damaging for the culture." "A few months ago I started to notice a trend: Whenever a video of my DJing went viral, 50% of the comments were from people saying it was fake and that I was a fraud," Hype said in an emailed statement to EDM.com. "There seems to be a narrative that all big DJs on big stages are playing pre-recorded sets and I want to break that. I’m trying to deliver a different show every single time and doing stuff that’s actually LIVE, unique, and RISKY is the only way I know how to perform." Hype then invoked a 2021 livestream by deadmau5 that resurfaced in the summer of 2023, wherein the influential producer claimed that DJs performing at major festivals play pre-recorded sets "most of the time" to adhere to rigorous time constraints imposed by the organizers of those events. A few months later in November 2023, a contentious Reddit thread began to pick up steam as ravers questioned en masse which DJs were genuinely performing live at EDC Orlando. Hype, who was mentioned frequently, then took to social media to bemoan deadmau5's commentary by virtue of an Instagram Reel containing a number of clips from his DJ sets. "I saw a video where deadmau5 told his fans that EDC requires all artists to pre-record and it’s just not true, I’ve played all the biggest festivals on all the biggest stages!" Hype's statement continues. "I think this narrative is damaging for the culture and the new DJs coming up." It's worth noting that deadmau5 clarified his remarks in a comment on Hype's Reel. "I'm almost positive this wasn't directed at you," he wrote at the time. "Nor was it at anyone really, getting pretty tired of having to explain myself over and over, but the clip was taken and edited from a literal popcorn eating facetious rant... but since everyone's just taking it so damn serious, run with it I guess." View the original article to see embedded media. Hype's comments are timely. From a macro standpoint, today's DJs must navigate a landscape where technical prowess and creative pre-planning are both essential and scrutinized. To that end, it's fair to wonder whether the culture's obsession with authenticity in the social media age sadly overlooks the rigorous preparation and skill required to deliver a DJ set of Hype's competence. A real challenge lies in educating audiences and preserving the integrity of DJing in an increasingly pernicious digital world. Whether or not the stigma persists remains to be seen, but it's a safe bet. Fans of Hype can catch him DJing at his Hï Ibiza residency every Friday through October 4th, 2024 as well as at Creamfields, III Points and Groove Cruise, among other festivals. Peggy Gou Lights Up the Dark With Breezy House Track, "Find the Way"
In a world that often feels overwhelming, Peggy Gou's latest single offers a musical sanctuary where, for a few minutes at least, everything feels alright. Dripping with disco nostalgia, Gou's songs have become warm cocoons where worries dissolve with each sun-dappled synth. That rings true for "Find the Way," out now via her own music and design label, Gudu Records. Gou's vocals float above the mix like dandelion seeds on a summer wind, carrying a simple yet powerful message. A gentle nudge towards brighter days, her lyricism, though sparse, resonate with anyone who's ever needed to leave their troubles behind and find solace in music. Meanwhile, her production shimmers with retro flair, marrying classic disco elements with modern house sensibilities. It's a delicate balance, but Gou walks the tightrope with ease, crafting a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The release arrives in the midst of a breakout for the South Korean dance music superstar, who in June released her debut album I Hear You on XL Recordings. In the live music arena, she threw down high-profile DJ sets at Coachella, Ultra Music Festival and EDC Las Vegas, among others, and she's performing her biggest headline show yet tomorrow at London's Gunnersbury Park. Check out "Find the Way" below and listen to the new single on streaming platforms here. FDA Rejects MDMA Therapy For PTSD In Phase 3 Clinical Trials
FDA has delivered a huge blow to MDMA therapy this week. If you have been following over the last few years, MDMA (also known as Molly) has gained increasing psychotherapy support, especially concerning PTSD. The FDA recently announced a negative ruling on MDMA therapy for PTSD. Psychedelic experts are criticizing this. They stated the agency ignored solid overall results from the clinical trials. The FDA asked Lykos Therapeutics, which had filed a new drug application with the regulatory agency, for an additional late-stage clinical trial to further study MDMA’s safety and efficacy. An effort like this would require significant additional funding and likely take years to complete. The decision immediately drew dismayed reactions from patient advocates and experts involved in developing and studying psychedelic therapies. Jennifer M. Mitchell, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco had this to say: “It’s a true disappointment…From my perspective, I thought we met the criteria that the FDA requested, and I absolutely stand by our data.” Treatments like these are needed for veterans and so many others feeling despair in their lives. Lykos has not made the FDA’s letter of rejection publicly available. But in a statement, the company said that the issues the agency raised mirror those discussed in an FDA advisory committee meeting in June by a panel of psychiatric experts who had voiced concerns about MDMA’s effectiveness and safety. One major issue the panel raised was the inability to distinguish MDMA from a placebo effect because most trial participants correctly guessed whether they received the drug or a placebo. This issue, called functional unblinding, is a well-known and common problem in many trials that involve psychoactive pharmaceuticals. [INTERVIEW] Glacier Releases ‘enfold’, Talks Upcoming Album, here (not rly) there
We caught up with the artist, just in time for his latest heartfelt single. We’ve got a lovely piece of music for you to kick off today in full swing. Look no further than Glacier, a versatile artist who’s made waves recently with his approach to blending Electronic and acoustic elements, weaving them together seamlessly. The last time we had him here was for the release of his single ‘not rly‘, which we now are pleased to reveal is going to be part of his partly-homonymously named album, here (not rly) there, to release later in the year. Glacier is no stranger to music. Having a lifelong commitment to his passion, releases can be found as early as 2015, and a substantial amount of them found a home in Monstercat, so you’d better believe he knows a thing or two about the craft. Highlights for his career include having his single ‘Still‘ featured in Rocket League’s seasonal Lucky Lantern update, launching the song ‘Neos‘ with a simultaneous release in Osu!, and winning a remix contest held by Monstercat, Jauz, and Pegboard Nerds. ‘enfold’ Glacier’s latest single is called ‘enfold‘, and it’s been released today via Seeking Blue. In it, he focuses on navigating through life’s difficulties and using them as a driving force, printing a crucial idea in his listeners’ hearts. The song builds this idea over a careful Electro Pop bed, with elements borrowed from all over, such as Drum and Bass and Future Bass. Subtle elements such as piano droplets — and full chords — transposed upwards at times to add more flair, meet fast-paced drums, a plethora of elements gracing the stereo field, and, to top it all, a beautiful vocal line, which encourages to take control, in a positive way, with its thoughtful lyrics, “counting days away I feel so light embracing all the things that seem just right”. “enfold is about seeing through life’s challenges and allowing them to propel you forward. It captures that exhilarating sensation when everything falls into place perfectly.” -Glacier Listen to ‘enfold‘ below. Also, click this link right here to support the release on your platform of choice. Q&A Round With Glacier To celebrate the release of ‘enfold’, but also to anticipate what’s going to be Glacier’s monumental debut LP, here (not rly) there, we caught up with the artist, for a quick round of questions regarding the project. Check it out below! What was the main inspiration behind your upcoming album here (not rly) there? It primarily explores my tendency to idolize different versions of myself, either by looking back nostalgically and longing for what once was, as if everything used to be better. Or by fixating on future goals and aspirations, imagining that everything will make sense once I reach them. I believe everyone understands the importance of being present, both for themselves and for others, yet it’s easy to lose sight of this. The title reflects the struggle of wavering between where I am, where I’ve been, and where I want to go, all while failing to be fully present in any of them. I’ve often found myself wishing to be in a different time or place, thinking about what I could have done better or what I need to change to improve things. While there’s no harm in occasionally focusing on these thoughts, it’s crucial not to let them overshadow the reality of where I am right now. How long has the journey been from the initial concept to the final production of here (not rly) there? ‘not rly’ was the first song I started working on back in September of 2022. The songs were completely finalized at the start of 2024. Oddly enough, I initially started with what I thought was an interlude, knowing it would be part of a larger project. As I worked on it, the phrase “not really” just stuck in my head. I recorded a few versions of saying it, and eventually, I built the song — and the entire project — around that feeling of uncertainty. I wanted to create an LP so badly. I love diving into big projects as a listener and knew it was finally my time to make something that tells a bigger story than I could with just an EP or a single. I’ve been longing for a project like this as an artist, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with how it turned out — the music, the art direction, the lyrics. I’m extremely proud of the whole thing. What was your strategy or approach to producing? Drums are my first instrument, so I often start with something rhythm-based. I need a solid groove to build around; which makes it easier to imagine everything else. Plus, I really enjoy looping a drum section while I experiment with different instruments — it keeps the process feeling a bit impromptu. I think that’s why my songs tend to be very percussion-focused. That said, I’m mindful of not falling into the habit of writing songs the same way every time. If something feels powerful enough to spark an idea, I’ll go with it — whether it’s a vocal melody, a guitar chord progression, or a beautiful atmosphere I’ve created. For example, ‘not rly’ came about from experimenting with flute recordings. I layered them with a vocoder to create some neat ‘flute chords’ and from there, the path forward was clear. My workflow often has me jumping around a lot — recording small rhythmic ideas, creating ambient pads, playing synth solos, adding vocal ideas, testing new plugins, browsing for obscure sound effects, playing keys, writing down core ideas, grabbing a guitar, resampling things I’ve made into something new, and more. I tend to add too much and end up trimming things back if it gets too bloated. But hey, it’s all part of the fun! Can you share some insights into your creative process? Nowadays, I try to stick to a theme when creating music. It could be as simple as key words like “mushy, soil, rocks” or something deeper like “I miss being able to see the people I love as consistently as I used to, and I just can’t seem to express that enough”. I don’t necessarily need a theme to start working, but I usually find one as I go, which then helps everything develop in a more cohesive and meaningful way. For example, here are the keywords I wrote down for the LP’s overall sound: wood, trees, stick, stone, moss, mud, rain, dew, fog, mist, stream, spirits, talisman, squish, squash, hollow, wind, fern, green, yellow, auburn, cedar, nostalgia, evergreen, beetle, knots, pedals. I like having something to focus on when deciding which instruments to record, what lyrics to write, what drum samples to use, what synths, etc. It helps everything fit together. The music I listen to also has a huge influence on me. I absolutely love music as much as I possibly could, so I let my taste guide my decisions. If I’ve been on an emotional, ambient kick versus a bright, glitchy, jazzy kick, my work will reflect that. I think of my music as a culmination of everything I love, all put together. Your music often features natural elements. How important is nature to you, both personally and as an artist? Nature, in my mind, is everything. We’re all part of it, even if we sometimes feel disconnected in modern times. I’m constantly in awe of how vast and diverse the world is — especially when considering all the things we don’t yet know. There’s always this sense of adventure in the back of my mind, urging me to go out and explore. There’s still so much I haven’t seen for myself. I think I’d be a completely different person without my desire to be outside. Without it, I’d probably get too comfortable just staying in my own world, writing music. And while I love that, there’s so much more out there that I just have to see. On a smaller scale, I’m constantly impressed by how full of life everything is. Stopping on a hike to look at something on the ground, only to find it teeming with little creatures and plants, all doing their own thing — it’s incredibly inspiring. It reminds me of how small I am, but in a positive way. I love being a part of this grand dance of life. This has always been a central focus of Glacier for me. From the name itself to the character on its own journey and the lyrics that question my idea of life itself, the natural world is always at the heart of everything. Are there any artists you dream of collaborating with in the future? Definitely! A lot of these artists are also huge inspirations to me. Tennyson, Swardy, Anomalie, On Planets, Medasin, Mont Duamel, Haywyre, Floex, Disaterpiece, Koan Sound, Vorso, Mr. Bill, Jacob Collier, Hudson Lee, quickly, quickly, imagiro, Tutara Peak, James Ivy. I’ve had quite the itch to work the others more frequently as of late. I’ve had some recent in-person meet-ups with artists that have really started my spark to work together more. He states music transcends spoken language and has an incredible power to bring us together, to remind us of our shared humanity. RAJA’s artistic vision has as clear of a sonic voice as it does intention. By fusing Melodic House and Techno with Folk melodies, he’s developed a sound that can be traced back directly to him. It’s become recognisable, and lately, that’s thanks to the viral success of his previous single ‘Animal‘, featuring a video of him playing the song live in Africa, surrounded by wildlife. “She sees the world differently. She finds joy and happiness where we don’t see it. I hope that people will be able to compare their own lives and find new meanings and inspirations for themselves. We overestimate the importance of many things in our lives when we already have everything we need.” -RAJA ‘Babulana’ Lifted from his forthcoming EP, Wakanda, ‘Babulana‘ tells the story of a day in the life of one of the Maasai tribespeople he spent time with whilst in Tanzania. Through this tale, RAJA hopes to share the feelings of hope, joy, and ambition that can be found inside us all. The EP is a broader collection of work celebrating the diversity of global societies. By sharing the tales and melodies of the Maasai people, RAJA hopes to increase awareness of the vulnerability of ancient cultures and the critical importance of safeguarding their traditions for future generations. But he translates those words — and worlds — in a groovy, irresistible way of crafting Dance music. This one’s ought to have you dancing around, believe us.
