  3. The proprietors of Subvert, an upcoming music service, say they're delivering something Bandcamp ultimately couldn't: a "community-owned" platform unencumbered by corporate interests. Bandcamp was sold to Fortnite creators Epic Games back in 2022. Amid layoffs at the gaming giant, music licensing firm Songtradr then acquired Bandcamp 18 months later in a move that resulted in layoffs of their own, amounting to roughly half of the platform's staff. Enter Subvert, whose founder, Austin Robey, saw those developments as a sign of the downfall of the platform and, on a larger scale, the music industry considering its emphasis on monetary value rather than music's intrinsic personal value to artists and fans. In an open letter posted on Subvert's site, Robey highlights the need to address the "inevitable consequence of platform capitalism," the upshot of placing more value in stakeholders rather than independent users. He says he envisions a music marketplace "where the community owns the code, controls the decisions, and shares in its success." "Subvert is a Bandcamp successor that is collectively owned, stewarded, and controlled by its community, with 100% of its founding ownership reserved for its artists, community, and workers," Robey wrote in his impassioned letter. "We’re building a platform that has artists' interests, collective ownership, and democratic governance hardwired in its very DNA. "Subvert's primary goal is to create a collectively owned alternative to Bandcamp—a marketplace that makes it easy for artists to directly sell physical and digital work, while also giving them greater control over their own destiny," Robey adds. Elsewhere in the letter, Robey promises platform updates and information in the weeks ahead pertaining to the launch. At the time of this article's publication, the site also features a countdown with 36 days remaining. You can read more about Subvert's mission here.
  4. In the evolving landscape of UK festivals and clubbing, Houghton stands out as a reliable haven for quality music and a shared sense of community. It brings together a diverse collective of people, all united by their passion for music and the desire to share an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and seriously social, making it feel like an extended family gathering of clubbers from across the country, whilst consistently delivering on every level. The hype is real: great artists creating a journey of sound like no other. After clocking in 100K steps, the Electric Mode team can confidently say that Houghton Festival stands head and shoulders above the rest, delivering music that truly satisfies the soul, electric from start to finish. Tantrum Photo credit is : Khroma Collective Craig Richards and his team have meticulously crafted a home for festival-goers, a place where music lovers can truly immerse themselves in the experience across a variety of unique venues. This festival is a haven for true music enthusiasts, particularly those passionate about electronic and underground sounds. Designed with dedicated ravers in mind, the production and music curation are unmatched, offering a one-of-a-kind, 24-hour experience, highlighted by the incredible Terminus venue. Choosing a favourite stage at Houghton is no easy task. Each one blends effortlessly into its natural surroundings, creating a sanctuary for sound. With four stages nestled in the forest, you’re truly spoiled for choice. However, Terminus might just take the crown—running 24 hours throughout the weekend, with unannounced lineups that hark back to the days when great music mattered more than the names behind it. All weekend provided an extensive list of top selectors and endless highlights. The music sparked memories of the magic of the early electronic scene, free from barriers and raw. This was for the heads that love to dance. There was no ego, only inspiration that was fluidly delivered at every corner. One of our favourites was Anna Wall making her debut at Terminus, keeping it rolling with an authentic and unique vibe, delivering an outstanding set of epic electronic, synth-infused vinyl selections. Our standout moments of the weekend undoubtedly included Houghton’s own Craig Richards delivering flawless sets at both Pavilion and Tantrum. A true master at work, Richards was relentless in crafting an unparalleled soundtrack across multiple sets, combining finesse and energy that left everybody craving more. Friday night saw Voigtmann close the Earthling stage, following on from Raresh who got the crowd in a perfect position with edgy, groove laden rolling beats and a high octane energy that pushed until the early hours. Bobby Pleasure swiftly became a crowd favourite, delivering two outstanding sets at Tantrum and Pavilion. A true connoisseur, he effortlessly moved between Disco, Deep Techno, and everything in between. The Giant Steps was a consistent highlight for the Electric Mode Team, with its incredible low-slung, dub disco beats resonating beautifully through a warm sound system, rumoured to feature speakers from Studio 54, adding to the venue’s mystique. Another forest find was Optimo at Outburst, delivering the driving Techno we all crave on Sunday. Of course, no Houghton experience would be complete without a visit to the Pavilion stage. The production and light show here, combined with incredible lineups, make it truly exceptional. Sunday was unforgettable, with Rhadoo and Ricardo Villalobos taking on closing duties, doing what they do best. But Houghton offers more than just music. Nestled beside the shimmering lake, you’ll find the Napkin and Turntable restaurant, hosted by Wolf & Lamb. Here, you can savour a peaceful three-course meal while the soothing murmurs of House and Techno play in the background. Our team also had the chance to embark on the renowned art train tour, exploring the gardens of Houghton Hall. We were guided through an impressive collection of sculptures by Antony Gormley, Dame Rachel Whiteread, and James Turrell and provided some insights into the installations. What truly defines Houghton is its in-tune music crowd. With their warm, friendly smiles, they make the festival feel like home akin to the 90’s Acid House rave movement. This sense of community is a testament to Craig, Amanda, and Flo, who pour their love for music into creating this incredible experience. The dedication and effort they invest are palpable to everyone who attends. In a challenging festival year, Houghton stands out as one of the UK’s most significant independent festivals. Houghton, we salute you! The post Houghton 24’ Review : Houghton is Home appeared first on Electic Mode.
  5. Moody Good reaffirms his penchant for grimy, ominous dubstep with his new single, "Get Splashed." With its deep vox and eerie soundscapes, the wobbling dubstep track provides fans with a litany of nasty sounds and samples. Meanwhile, its drops blend genres with a hip-hop twist, delivering an irresistible and heavy-hitting record. Switching gears in its final minute, the song's coda could easily soundtrack a sci-fi alien film, its haunting call-and-response carrying suspense and leaving listeners hungry for more. Its titular phrase returns at the eleventh hour to bring the arrangement home, cohesively wrapping up the experimental banger through a formidable showcase of his sound design capabilities. "It's good to be back!" Moody Good said in a press release. "Off the back of my tracks with Zeds Dead and Hamdi, I'm pumped to give you all my first solo original tune 'Get Splashed.' 6. Flosstradamus has teamed up with promising bass music producer Viperactive for a trap track of epic proportions, "HITA." Through its entirety, the track unsurprisingly urges listeners to put their "hands in the air," building the energy. The beat eventually overflows into a ground-shaking drop, where thick 808s and rapid-fire tribal drums set the perfect scene for a laser show while a whistling melody slices through the mix. Accompanied by an unrelenting rhythm, Flosstradamus and Viperactive then opt for a four-on-the-floor arrangement in the second drop of "HITA," showcasing their versatility and infusing depth to the trap banger. The release comes in the midst of a rapid rise for Viperactive, who recently garnered support from Skrillex when the dubstep legend played his remix of "Rumble" at Chicago's iconic Lollapalooza festival. His music has also received support from Dillon Francis, Alison Wonderland, Four Tet, Valentino Khan, Steve Aoki and many others. 8. Following successful exhibitions in Australia in the summer of 2023, Behind The Boosh 20, a photography exhibition by Boosh cast member Dave Brown, is coming back to the UK in celebration of 20 years since The Mighty Boosh first appeared on the telly box. Presented by Behind The Gallery at 2 Hoxton Street, London N, London, N1 6NG, from 10 – 13 October, Behind The Boosh is an up-close and personal look behind-the-scenes of the generation defining comedy. Dave was not the “official photographer”, just a friend/fellow troupe member who ultimately liked taking photos and always had a camera to hand (before everyone had a camera to hand!). The result is an extensive collection of images that are personal, natural and tell the story of the journey of an iconic comedy troupe that started in the late 90’s to become a hit TV show and globe trotting live tour. With an invite only preview night on 9 October, it opens to the public on 10, 11, 12 and 13 October with an Artist Talk with Dave being held on Saturday 12th at 12:30. Prints will be available to purchase at the exhibition or here. “I’m in total denial that it’s been 20 years since I donned a fake mullet and sprayed on the fake tan to play Joey Moose in Killeroo, the first episode of season 1 back in 2004. I had a Nokia brick phone back then, social media consisted only of Friends Reunited and MySpace, Franz Ferdinand were number 1 and Rich Fulcher had a perm. It’s been a while since I showed some Behind The Boosh pics to the UK fans! It’s gonna be great to get my monkey hands back into the dusty Boosh archives to find some old fan favourite classics but I’m also keen to show some never before seen moments from all the TV and Live shows. The exhibitions I had last year in Sydney and Melbourne blew me away, it was so great to meet a new generation of fan who’s older siblings and parents had handed their Boosh love down to them, I’m hoping there are a few new Boosh babies over here too but also great to see all the fans who still watch it late on a Saturday night with a Pott Noodle and a bowl of Coco Pops” Behind The Gallery Creative Director Stephen Dallimore said “The love The Mighty Boosh still has to this day, is comparable to legendary acts such as Monty Python and continues to draw together all fringes of society. Like in Australia, our aim is to provide fans with a memorable experience that will take people on a journey through time and space via Daves photography and create space where fans can hang out Dave, a university friend of Noel Fielding, has been a part of The Mighty Boosh from the beginning. The comedy brainchild of Fielding and Julian Barrett, Dave was integral to the Boosh’s imagery having not only played multiple characters in the show, he also designed tour posters, DVDs, set graphics and merchandise; compiled and designed The Mighty Book of Boosh; and had a hand in Boosh music and choreography. 9. Cash Only returns to DVINE Sounds, this time alongside Charlo to remix a UKG classic, Lenny Fontana’s ‘Spirit Of The Sun’, out on now ‘Spirit Of The Sun’ was originally released in the late 90s by iconic underground garage label Public Demand, responsible for pivotal anthems such as Craig David’s ‘Rewind’ and ‘Boo’ by Ms. Dynamite, to name a few. The Steve Gurley rework of Lenny Fontana’s original dominated the underground scene at the time and remains a firm favourite by heads in the know to this day. Now, DVINE Sounds party starter and club stalwart Cash Only steps up on remix duties alongside prolific studio engineer and burgeoning artist Charlo. Together the two combine their knowledge and respect for garage with their remix of ‘Spirit Of The Sun’, upping the tempo, dropping a speed garage-style bassline and carrying on the legacy of this legendary track. Check out footage of DVINE Sounds founder Sam Divine dropping the remix in Leeds, at the Defected Croatia DVINE Sounds boat party and at Defected Sydney at The Ivy with Low Steppa. You can also watch Sam Divine drop the track at Tomorrowland 2024 (at 1hr 56m), and there’s footage of Charlo dropping the remix at Boomtown Festival via his Instagram. Cash Only has been making a major name for himself as of late, delivering a concoction of driving house music along with Afro-inspired elements and a nostalgic nod to his UK garage and jungle beginnings in 1996. This has resulted in releases on Nervous, DVINE Sounds, Upcycle, Stashed and Electronic Nature, securing three top tens and a Top 20 on Traxsource while building steady streaming numbers on Spotify. Alongside a busy production schedule, Cash Only’s DJ diary has exploded this year, seeing him play all around the world at Ministry of Sound, The Ivy in Sydney, Defected Festival in Croatia and Malta, Miami Music Week and, for the second year running, Glastonbury Festival. With influences from almost every angle, his versatility as a selector keeps the ravers on their toes no matter what time of night or vibe. Charlo started his journey into house music at the early age of 14 while living in Spain, managing to secure his first residency at just 15 at Sisu & Cavali clubs in Marbella, supporting major artists like Disclosure, MK, Snoop Dogg, and Tiësto. Charlo’s now a regular performer on the festival and club scene across the UK, and in Ibiza and Marbella, and has performed guest mixes on major UK radio stations like Kiss 100, BBC Radio 1, and 1Xtra. In the last three years, Charlo’s been refining his production skills. He released his first single, ‘Anybody Out There’, on his label Peace Of Mind Records in 2016, which was premiered by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. This was followed up by a house version of Marvin Gaye’s iconic ‘Grapevine’ and a UKG-inspired single aptly titled ‘Dubplate 98’. Cash Only and Charlo’s remix of ‘Spirit Of The Sun’ by Lenny Fontana respectfully ramps up an underground UKG classic for the dancefloors of today. Having already shown what it can do on dancefloors, it’s well on course to be a major hit off-stage. 10. Circles Revisited Reboots by ADAM F MOBO Award-winning drum ‘n’ bass icon Adam F revisits his classic ‘Circles’, “one of the greatest tracks to ever come out of England”, out via 181 Recordings. The ‘revisited’ version of the 1995 track – which reached #20 in the UK Singles Chart – precedes the release of Adam F’s upcoming rework album, ‘Colours Revisited’. For this project, he’s completely re-recorded and revamped his 1997-released MOBO Award-winning debut album, including ‘Circles’, enlisting top drum ‘n’ bass and jungle artists for a series of further fresh ‘revisited reboots’. ‘Circles Revisited’ brings out the acoustic bass, jazzy saxophone, and synths in stellar style. The sub-bass and drum breaks are sharper than ever, with each ride, snare and hi-hat sounding distinct and crisp. Remarking on the incredible 29-year journey since its original release, Adam F reflects on how ‘Circles’ has become a cornerstone of UK dance music: “‘Circles’ is one of the first tracks where I could express my influences with no boundaries,” he says. “The music became known as Drum ‘n’ Bass but started off as hardcore Rave and Jungle. One of the greatest things about it for me was that I could express myself through that medium using all my influences; funk, soul, reggae and jazz – freely and unrestricted. “I was incredibly humbled when I heard Gilles Peterson endorse ‘Circles’ on a live gig as “One of the greatest tracts to ever come out of England”. Further proof came when I was sandwiched between Erykah Badu and Jamiroquai in Brazil and the audience was singing along with my set. I was truly humbled.” “My music has crossed three generations and still feels relevant to the people. I was inspired to know that Pink Pantheress was into my music and opened the door for us to go into the studio together to record ‘Break It Off’. This provided new impetus and elevated ‘Circles’ to the next level as it continues to touch new audiences.” Liverpool-born producer, musician and songwriter Adam F – real name Adam Fenton – found early success with ‘Circles’, alongside tracks like ‘Metropolis’, ‘Mother Earth’, and ‘F-Jam’, often drawing from influences in jazz, funk, soul and reggae. He’s been named one of the Top 5 Producers In The World by MTV, achieved seven Gold and four Platinum certified awards, and won Best Album for ‘Colours’ at the 1998 MOBO Awards. In 2001, Adam F ventured into hip-hop, co-producing Dead Prez’s ‘It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop’ with DJ Fresh, followed by the album ‘Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare’, featuring collaborations with LL Cool J, Redman and De La Soul. Shortly after the release of ‘Colours’, Adam F took a break from releasing his own music, launching – with DJ Fresh – record labels Kaos Recordings and Breakbeat Kaos in 2003. Breakbeat Kaos laid the foundations for staple names in modern drum ‘n’ bass, such as Chase & Status, Pendulum, Nero and DJ Fresh. True aficionados recognise the poignancy of this release. Drum ‘n’ bass heads, get stuck into this revitalised ‘Circles’ version and keep an ear out for more of Adam F’s reimagined, rebooted classics leading up to February’s ‘Colours Revisited’ album. The track features MC Ambush, a New York-based MC who has worked with David Guetta, Hardwell, R3hab and many more dance music powerhouses. It comes with high energy from the very outset, its titular phrase pairing with unyielding lead synths before the producers unleash a vintage electro drop reminiscent of Afrojack's signature Dirty Dutch sound. The vigor continues until the break, its crashing waves turning into a gentle rocking for a brief intermission. The calm doesn't stay for long, though, as the arrangement builds into another drop sequence to bring the festival banger home. For Tiesto, "Light It Up" follows his genre-bending hit "Hot Honey" with Alana Springsteen. Afrojack finds himself equally as busy, recently teaming up with Pitbull and Ne-Yo to release "2 The Moon," a follow-up to their 2011 global hit "Give Me Everything." 16. Festivals vendors are struggling with their businesses right now. As a matter of fact, traders are questioning the value of attending festivals as costs rise and events are being canceled. In 2024 only, at least 36 UK festivals were either postponed or shut down, according to the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF). In addition to that, increasing fees and commission demands are squeezing profits of the vendors, making it very difficult to make the experience a success. Emily Fields, a vendor who runs the Cornwall-based furniture restoration business The Fields, expressed frustration over the fees now imposed by festival organizers, calling them driven by “pure greed.” She noted that her earnings have significantly dwindled, and lamented how festivals have transformed from their earlier days into highly commercialized events. She has been attending festivals since childhood, and the changes she sees now contrast sharply with the more community-focused gatherings of the past. “They’re now making you use their card payment systems – you pay to rent the card machine, they then take a percentage of your takings and charge for the pitch.” A spokesperson for Glastonbury Festival stated that their system ensures vendors are fully aware of all costs before arriving at the site. Unlike many other festivals that have switched to a sales-based percentage fee for all traders, Glastonbury continues to charge a fixed fee, which is individually calculated for each stall. John Rostron, CEO of the Association of Independent Festivals, stated in June that the UK’s festival industry had hit a “regrettable milestone” and urgently needs more government support. He warned that their research indicates around 100 festivals may close by the end of the year, with even more at risk in 2025 if temporary financial aid is not provided. Stay tuned for more news! 18. Yet another summer festival was caught in the crossfire of extreme weather over the weekend. Bass Canyon 2024, held at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington from August 16-18, was abruptly shut down on the second night due to dangerous conditions. Video footage captured by festival-goers showed high winds battering the stage’s LED panels, sending them swaying perilously above the crowd. The campsite didn’t fare much better, with numerous tents and canopies left in tatters by the storm. The winds were severe enough to raise serious safety concerns, leading the organizers to make the tough call to halt the festival, despite their usual rain-or-shine policy. The decision, made to protect the safety of attendees, staff, and performers, was not taken lightly. While most artists managed to reschedule their sets for the following day, fans were particularly disappointed to miss Rusko’s performance, as he was unable to stay for day three. Thankfully, the weather calmed down for the rest of the weekend, allowing attendees to enjoy the stunning experience that The Gorge is known for. Headlining sets over the three days included Excision, Zeds Dead, Wooli, Ganja White Night, Space Laces, JOYRYDE, and Kill The Noise. Bass Canyon is just the latest in a string of festivals disrupted by Mother Nature this year. Ultra Miami, Electric Forest, Elements, and Texas Eclipse all faced cancellations due to extreme weather, and Deep Tropics in Nashville was also forced to pull the plug during SOFI TUKKER’s set this weekend due to lightning. As festival season continues, it’s clear that the unpredictable nature of outdoor events remains a force to be reckoned with. 19. Fame, Money, Lust, Goom Gum. The Melodic Techno Duo brought out their A-Game to spin RAFFA GUIDO‘s fun and light ‘Famax’ into a melodic and acidic remix. The remix is available through Three Six Zero Recordings and it adds a little flare and spice to the already fun and light-hearted Afro-House track. Let’s explore all the sounds and tastes of the new version! ‘Famax’ (Goom Gum Remix) As the original track plays around warm tones and silky textures, The Russian Duo Goom Gum offers a darker lense on the track. The vocals take the background of the track, with ethereal reverbs and softer volume. At the forefront, the Acid elements take over, and oh my, it takes you on a journey. The song skillfully brings the energy up and down, with great balance of the harder melodies and the softer synths. All in all, the remix is an amped up, more somber version. However, it remains keeps the legitimacy of the songs sexiness and gleeful harmonies. The track follows the trend of songs like ‘Sierra’ by Argy or ‘El Tiempo’ by Grigore, using Spanish vocals to their advantage. Goom Gum Since the inception of the project, the Russian Melodic Techno Duo Goom Gum has left their imprint on the dance music scene. With darker textures, incredible percussion, and great vibes, Goom Gum offerex a wide array of emotions on their tracks. They count with the support of moguls such as Dubfire, Tale of Us, Argy, Pete Tong, and more. They have enjoyed the success of their more recent tracks like ‘Pantheon’, ‘Soma’, and ‘Legion’. As a result, their sound has resonated with the public even more. Moreover, they lead their own label AVTOOK Recordings, and tour the world consistently. This sound will teleport you to a serene beach in Tulum with crazy visuals, and until you can actually travel to see it in person, enjoy ‘Famax’ (Goom Gum Remix): The post ‘Famax’ Gets an Acidic Overhaul by Goom Gum appeared first on EDMTunes.

  25. Someone’s worst nightmare came true this past weekend. A Ferris Wheel caught fire in Leipzig, Germany during the Highfield music festival. It led to at least 30 people people injured including 4 suffering burns and another injured from a fall. The incident occurred at roughly 9 PM local time when German rapper Ski Aggu was onstage. The rapper later said on social media that he was told to continue his performance despite the blaze in the visible distance. Ski had this to say: “I was only told through my earpiece that I should not stop the show under any circumstances, but should initially continue to talk with you so avoid mass panic. The priority was to prevent the situation from escalating any further. Fortunately, that worked.” An initial investigation found that the fire started in one empty gondola and then spread to a neighboring gondola. Thankfully it started in an empty one or this could have been worse. The cause of the fire was undetermined as of Sunday. Two of the 30 injured people suffered unspecified serious injuries, while four more suffered burns in the incident. One person also sustained injuries from a fall, the German Red Cross said, while the majority of the remaining injuries were smoke inhalation-related.
