Burning Man Exodus Dampened By Major Dust Storm
*Featured Cover Photo Credit: Ashley Harrell / SFGATE On September 2nd, the Labor Day holiday, tens of thousands of Burning Man attendees enjoyed their last day at the festival’s playas. While departing (or trying to depart), the Burning Man attendees faced a heavy dust storm that affected traffic significantly. According to an article from The Daily Beast, the attendees faced delayed traffic times of up to 10 hours getting off-site. Not just that, the dust storm affected the visibility of the Burning Man attendees trying to leave by reducing it to just five feet. Burning Man Traffic‘s account on X (formerly Twitter) had a post at 07:24 p.m yesterday that had a travel time of “6 hours from Greeters to pavement”. The account at 08:21 p.m. also uploaded another updated post that also shown an expected travel time of 6 hours too, in addition to the frequent posts that showed 4-5 hour commute times as well. According to another article from SFGATE editor Ashley Harrell, who attended this year’s festival with her partner, the dust storm started during the Temple Burn on Friday night, August 30th. Since then, even during the famous burning of “The Man” statue, the dust storm still continued, much to the detriment of the Burning Man attendees trying to leave Black Rock City as quickly as possible. Photo Credit: Jason Ross / Reno Gazette Journal Current status of the Burning Man dust storm situation As of this current moment, Burning Man Traffic’s X account now has travel-time updates that state “1 hour from Greeters to pavement”. For the Burning Man attendees, the dust storm is another hectic event on and around the playas that have made their experiences in the 2024 edition something that will live on in their memories for a very long time. Earlier in the week, during the first day of the festival to be exact, an attendee died after she was found unresponsive and the attendee’s death occurred after the festival began after a 12-hour delay due to rain and muddy conditions. In addition, The Mirror reported that a man named Samer Naouri got under arrest for false imprisonment, kidnapping, and abduction, as well as a drug-related offense. Furthermore, a woman named Susie Holland had to pay a fine of $1,500 to the Nevada Transportation Authority and the impound lot for giving rides to people who were heading to Black Rock City for cash without a proper permit (under Nevada transportation regulations). For the majority of the Burning Man attendees who were trying to leave, even after packing all of their things into their vehicles/trailers/RVs, the dust storm have probably affected their physical and mental well-beings. The same goes if they hitchhiked or taking the bus (or ridesharing) as well. If they do plan on returning to Black Rock City next year, or anyone who is planning to attending their first Burning Man, preparing for worst-case traffic/storm scenarios should be an important task for them to include in their plans. Quentyn Present Indie-Electronic single ‘I Wanna Know’
Former Volt & State member, Quentyn is back with I Wanna Know. The new single from the indie-electronic music artist blends electronic festival-feel melodies with organic indie band sounds. “I Wanna Know” showcases Quentyn’s signature style; festival-feel melodies are intertwined with the raw, organic sounds typical of indie bands. Quentyn’s songwriting process is unique; he begins each track on the piano, crafting the perfect melody loop before layering in electronic elements. This method results in music that is not just for festivals but for moments of introspection and active listening. The tune works when you’re on the road, alone, or during contemplation. It’s not surprising that early support for “I Wanna Know” has been strong. BBC Music, for instance, has already backed the track. The song has also gained significant traction on social media, with related content amassing over 300,000 views on Instagram. The success was also built thanks to a popular solo challenge that has captured the attention of music fans worldwide. Quentyn describes his music as designed to evoke the feeling of a plot twist in a movie. The sounds are reminiscent of the moment when the underdog triumphs against all odds, fueled by determination and a brilliant master plan. “I Wanna Know” is no exception, embodying the motivation and strength to take action in life, rather than serving as an escape. Dubbed "the world's wettest party," S2O Festival made a splash over the weekend with its U.S. debut at the Brooklyn Mirage. One of Asia's premier festival brands, S2O launched in Bangkok back in 2015 and has since hosted larger-than-life festivals in Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam. The festival is beloved for its interactive water effects, which drench fans in euphoria alongside electrifying EDM lineups. Its organizers are now celebrating a successful—and soaked—stateside debut over Labor Day Weekend. EDM.com was on the ground to capture all the wringing-wet mayhem. From Speedway to Soundwaves: Tai Woffinden’s High-Octane Journey into Music
In a fascinating twist, three-time World Speedway Champion Tai Woffinden, known for his dominance on the speedway track has now embarked on a thrilling new adventure in the world of electronic music. Inspired by top-tier artists like FISHER and motivated by his natural drive as a professional athlete, Tai is releasing tracks on Armada Music and collaborating with legends like Gabry Ponte. We caught up with him to explore his fresh perspective on music, balancing life as a DJ, racer, and father, and his plans for the future. You are best known for your impressive career as a 3x World Speedway Champion, what made you decide to also pursue a career in music? Well, we have Paul Fisher to thank for that. I went to his festival he did in Australia and his partner Chloe Fisher hooked me up with some backstage passes and I remember thinking he was a pro surfer and look what he’s doing here following his passion for music too. FISHER inspired me so I locked in and here we are releasing a track on Armada with Gabry Ponte! Life is wild… What lessons have you carried over from your speedway career into DJing and producing? I don’t know if there are any lessons, but to be a professional athlete and achieve what I have over the years it takes a certain kind of mindset and drive and I will carry that forward as that the only way I know how to live. How has the response from the electronic music community been since you began pursuing DJing? So far so good but were only just getting started! There’s a famous quote by American basketball legend Shaquile O’Neal that when he’s on stage performing as DJ Diesel, he has the same feeling as a playoff game. Do you also feel that same energy? I’m not sure yet, because until I play to a 55,000 capacity music crowd, the equivalent of the racing audience at Warsaw Polish Grand Prix, it’s not until then I can truly compare. However, I know one thing, I thrive in them high pressure situations like Diesel did when he was shooting hoops! How does your background and experience as a professional athlete influence the way you approach music? Well, like I say I’m good under pressure and I guess the touring aspect of a speedway racer’s life is very aligned with that of a DJ on the road. Just swapping the bikes for decks. Who is your biggest inspiration when it comes to electronic music? I love watching Will Sparks perform he always brings great energy. Fred again… is a true musical legend and his skills with instruments is super impressive. Then you have James Hype the master of the decks! There are too many amazing people in the scene to list them all. You released a track with Gabry Ponte, a legend in the Eurodance scene and best known of course for being part of Eiffel 65, did you (like me) grow up listening to that style of music? What was it like collaborating with him? I grew up listening to everything that my mum would be blasting on the stereo, often Michael Jackson. My youth days were loading up the skits mix CDs with my mate at the weekends and raving all night while his mum was working night. Then, when I was 16, we jumped the fence to go see Pendulum but my heart is main stage techno. We sent the track to Gabry’s team and just two days later we got a reply saying that he loved it and wanted to get straight to work on finishing touches. I’m stoked with how it turned out and to have such an enthusiastic reaction from someone of his level is really motivating. How do you go about balancing being a father, your career in racing and music, vlogging, and creating content on social media? Ahh yeah some days can be tricky… Socials are super easy. It only takes 5 min to post. I do all my own stuff, I put the vlogs on the back burner as we’re not allowed to use any race footage so it just did not make sense to do a race day vlog with a few clips of racing. For now, racing and producing works super well it’s a nice balance and allows me to switch off from the racing. The hardest part is being away from my wife and kids but I’m the provider and I want to give them the best life possible. We home school the kids when we’re in UK so we get so much time with them as we can when I’m home and it allows us to jump on a plane and they can all come so I feel we make the best of it. But my wife Faye is the key, she is very understanding about what I do for a living and she is our rock, the heart of the family! We have already lived ten lifetimes in the last ten years and I can’t wait for the next ones! Final question, where would you like to see your music career and racing legacy evolve in the years to come? There is still more that I want to achieve in the sport so I will continue my path and see where we end up. As for the music scene, I’m only just getting started and if its anything like my racing career it’s gonna be one hell of a ride!

As festivals lit up the nights and beach parties stretched into the early hours, five artists emerged as the true stars of the season. Here’s a look at the dance artists who absolutely dominated this summer. 1) Charli XCXCharli XCX has always been a pop sensation, but this summer, she fully embraced the dance music scene—and the results were electric. This summer, he proved once again why he’s one of the biggest names in dance music. 4) Sara LandrySara Landry has been quietly making waves in the techno scene, and this summer, she truly broke through. Known for her dark, intense sound, Sara’s music brought a fresh edge to the summer’s dance floors. Her album ‘Rituals’ was a standout, with tracks like ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Shadow Dance’ becoming underground hits. Sara’s DJ sets were a deep dive into the darker side of dance music, filled with pounding beats and eerie atmospheres that left audiences entranced. Woman Slapped With Fines for Giving Rides to Burning Man
A Nevada woman is feeling the heat after Nevada authorities hit her with fines for offering rides to Burning Man. 61-year-old Susie Holland recently shared her story with the Reno Gazette Journal. Holland says Nevada Transportation Authority agents swarmed her car when she arrived to pick up Burners making their way to Black Rock Desert. It turns out her Burners were undercover agents. “When I pulled in … they just swooped up on me in three undercover Ford Explorers,” Holland told the RGJ. “They were coming at me so fast, so hard and so intensely, I was like, what is happening right now?” Holland says agents searched her car before informing her she could face up to $30,000 in fines. The crime? Apparently, it’s illegal to give rides to Burning Man without a permit. “We are seeing huge amounts of illegal activity. Most people don’t even know that they are operating illegally. But it is illegal to operate without a certificate of public convenience, a necessity that is administered and issued through the Nevada Transportation Authority,” Vaughn Hartung, the Chairman of NTA, said to KOLO-TV. When Holland went to the impound lot to get her car, she says an attendant told her 18 other cars had been brought in for the same reason. The 61-year-old Reno resident ended up paying $1,500 to both the NTA and the impound lot to get her car back. Holland is still waiting to see how much her fine will be. “This is (the NTA’s) hunting season. They’re not going to let us know that this is illegal. It doesn’t behoove them in any way,” Holland told the Reno Gazette Journal. The post Woman Slapped With Fines for Giving Rides to Burning Man appeared first on EDMTunes.

Turntable.fm Creators to Launch Social Listening Platform, Hangout, Following $8.2M Funding Round
What was once a raging inferno of music tech that flickered out too soon is being rekindled with a spark of innovation and a hefty dose of capital. Turntable Labs, the brainchild of the original Turntable.fm creators, is back with a new social music app called Hangout. With $8.2 million in fresh funding and lessons learned from their initial venture, they're ready to make a mark on music tech once more. In the early 2010s, Turntable.fm emerged as a breakout platform that promised to change the way we listen to music online. The product allowed users to DJ in virtual rooms, share tracks and engage in social interactions, creating a real-time interactive space for music lovers. However, the original Turntable.fm met an unfortunate end when the complexities of music licensing began to consume company resources and stall crucial product developments. Combined with a lack of sustainable revenue, the brand's operating woes made it difficult to attract further investment. Fast-forward to today, when the company, led by Joseph Perla, is ready to give it another go with Hangout, an app designed to bring back the best elements of Turntable.fm while addressing its past. Unlike its predecessor, Hangout's founders believe it has a clearer strategy for growth and sustainability, and the app's development has been backed by a recent $8.2 million seed round led by Founders Fund, Elizabeth Street Ventures, 468 Capital and f7 Ventures along with angel investor Michael Guimarin, the CEO of WordOut. One of the main differences between Turntable.fm and Hangout is a refined focus on community and gamification. Hangout aims to deliver an engaging social listening experience complete with custom avatars, upvoting systems and real-time interactions. As the app gears up for its full launch in 2024, its founders are in active talks with music rightsholders to ensure all legal bases are covered—a lesson learned the hard way in their previous venture. The waitlist for the forthcoming launch of Hangout can be found here. Check out a walkthrough of the platform below.

ISOxo and Knock2 Dare Gravity, DJ From Suspended Shipping Container at North Coast Festival
In a daring spectacle, ISOKNOCK—the collaborative powerhouse of ISOxo and Knock2—turned heads at North Coast Music Festival this past Labor Day Weekend when they performed from a DJ booth suspended in a shipping container by a crane. The high-flying setup was a perfect metaphor for ISOKNOCK's meteoric trajectory thus far: elevated, risky and absolutely thrilling. It's not merely the audacity of their performance that had fans buzzing at Chicago's Seat Geek Stadium and across social media thereafter; it's the duo's characteristically bold approach, one that has come to define them as one of dance music's most exciting acts in years. Fresh off the release of their surprise album, 4EVR, ISOKNOCK have been enthralling live audiences with their visceral fusion of raw trap, dance and punk elements. The album is a reflection of the duo's penchant for pushing boundaries and flying by the seat of their pants—the same spirit that was on full display at North Coast over the holiday weekend. It's timely proof that when it comes to pushing the envelope in electronic music, there's few standard bearers doing it quite like ISOxo and Knock2. Brownies & Lemonade, the electronic music event organizer known for their unique pop-up raves in unexpected places, called the stunt "one of the craziest takeovers we’ve ever done." A fitting blend of the superstars' iconic sounds, the powerhouse collaboration is imminently set to arrive after building a steady momentum in the live performance arena throughout 2024. From its debut spin in January, "Follow The Light" has become a staple in the respective DJ sets of Hardwell and van Buuren, like at UNTOLD Dubai, leaving fans eager for an official release. Enrico Sangiuliano releases new “Interconnection” EP
Continuing his unique project, NINETOZERO, Enrico Sangiuliano returns with a new single ‘Interconnection‘. Together with ‘Can U Feel It‘ it completes the Interconnection EP, which will be released on vinyl later this year. The celebration won’t stop with the release of the EP. Enrico Sangiuliano will play an all-night-long set at Village Underground in London on 7th September. The upcoming release is about the ‘Interconnection’ between different senses, for example sound and touch: when sound becomes vibration our perception enhances. The track creates a metaphor of the concept using a voice and a synthesizer that playfully evolve and merge into each other to become one, while still keeping their distinctive identities. ‘Interconnection’ is a track made for the dancefloor, a place where all our senses come together and go beyond the auditory experience, becoming a multisensory experience where we’re all… interconnected. – Enrico Sangiuliano As a producer, Enrico Sangiuliano has done it all. He remixed classics to chart-topping techno tracks that range from deep and dark to more melodic and euphoric. His creativity knows no bounds. With ‘Can U Feel It‘ and more recently with ‘Interconnection’, he explored the connection between auditory perception and physical sensations. The brilliant ‘Interconnection‘ is a pulsating cut that locks dancers into the hypnotic drums as flashes of acid synths spray about up top. Edgy vocal stabs add to the pressure. Meanwhile, trance-infused pads change shape through various filters. They range from smooth and smudged to sawtooth and make the trip all the more dynamic. Each element has plenty of room to breath and make its mark; a spine-tingling breakdown offers a moment to set before the groove kicks in and oscillating pads take dancers to the next level. Enrico Sangiuliano’s Interconnection EP is another essential work from this revered talent. The post Enrico Sangiuliano releases new “Interconnection” EP appeared first on The Groove Cartel.

In Conversation with NOTION
About eight out of ten times, when we listen to new music, our immediate thought and expectation is how the song or the artist makes us feel; and more often than not, the feeling you’re aiming for is – euphoria. Something NOTION has achieved to invoke with every release he has made since his debut. Pushing his ideas with purpose, creativity, and power, the Bristol native has now become one of the leading names of the UK’s dance music’s most prominent new-generation artists. With a creative approach that is both futuristic and impactful while building on his penchant for delivering turbo-charged music that exudes a variety of emotions, which has long been a defining feature of his releases, NOTION has been consistently pushing the envelope by reinvigorating bass music in his own enterprising ways, while serving his vision’s most imperative purpose – making people dance. Now sitting at the helm as one of United Kingdom’s top dance music lynchpins through hits such as ‘FOUND LOVE’ and ‘CHERRY’ as part of his ‘OUTSIDER’ series, NOTION continues to make his mark on global music with this renewed sound in singles such as ‘TEMPORARY FRIENDS’ with Charlotte Plank and ‘BACKBONE’, which sees NOTION experiment with jungle music. These have been accompanied by ‘TV DREAMS’, ‘GRAVITY’ and ‘THINK ABOUT U’ that have seen NOTION draw inspiration from his foundational sounds like house, breaks and garage. The Mixtape has already been a favourite among his industry peers, with massive support coming from scene heavyweights like Sammy Virji, Joy Orbison, Ben UFO, Floating Points Conducta, salute, Disclosure, Joy Orbison, and Ewan McVicar throwing their weight behind the release. Having just arrived from an extensive tour across the United States and Canada, NOTION is preparing to unveil his most prolific offering to date: the ‘FORWARDS’ Mixtape. The inventive DJ and producer recently unveiled the Mixtape, starting with the uplifting track ‘FEEL LIKE ME’. The full release, out on August 30, which will include some his recent hits, will be an exhibition of NOTION’s ever-evolving sound, which has traversed from its roots in bass and bassline cuts into a more versatile blend of electronica, garage, breaks, and jungle. We figured it was the perfect moment to catch up with NOTION and dive into his ‘FORWARDS’ Mixtape, chat about his current tour in the USA and Canada, and get bite on his DANCE DUBS project. Of course, we had to kick things off by asking how the festival season has been treating him! “It’s been great but I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit of an introvert and I love being at home so I never really look forward to summer until it actually gets here haha. Don’t get me wrong, I do love summer & festival season, always a highlight of my year but I also really love rainy days and cold weather, plus I don’t really have the legs for shorts tbh.” The festival season was marked by NOTION’s highly anticipated Glastonbury debut, where he dished out his energetic dancefloor cuts at the UK’s most prestigious musical gathering. Seamlessly combining his trademark blends that ranged from hard-hitting basslines to infectious rhythms, NOTION was able to give the crowd a glimpse into his ‘FORWARDS’ Mixtape. “I’ve never been to Glastonbury before and it’s just like the most overwhelming mad experience. So cool to be able to play it b2b with Oppidan too. Also, fun Glasto fact – my dad almost went to the first EVER Glastonbury when there were like 300 people in a field but him and his mates drove round for ages and couldn’t find it so they went home, so that one’s for you Dad.” Coming to his FORWARDS Mixtape, NOTION believes that it represents a natural progression of his artistic journey. The Mixtape is a testament to NOTION’s relentless pursuit of innovation and a passion for discovering the endless potential within his craft. “I’ve kind of been looking at FORWARDS as a continuation of my OUTSIDER project that I dropped in 2022 which was a bit of a fresh start for me in terms of expressing myself more freely artistically as well as trying to work out how to do artwork, music videos and all the visual side of being an artist properly and then also just being a bit more open to showing different sides of myself musically. I make so much different music across so many genres and before that point I kind of felt like I could only drop club stuff so it was a bit of a turning point for me. Having said that, there wasn’t really a conscious decision to write a project this time, FORWARDS is basically just made up of music I’ve been making over the past 18 months that all felt like it fit together naturally so we decided to make it a thing!” Next, NOTION detailed the creative process that went into making his FORWARDS Mixtape “I was thinking about this the other day because I never really go into writing music with a plan, I just sit down on my laptop with a blank slate and see what comes out. All of the influences in the Mixtape are club/dance music but I feel like it would feel more at home on the motorway at 2am than at fabric or something. I think that sums up a lot of the music on this project.” We’re in an era where the lifespan of a song has drastically shortened, largely due to the fleeting, 15-second dopamine hits offered by platforms like Reels and TikTok. While this can lead to viral moments, the decline in a song’s popularity is almost ten times quicker once the initial buzz fades. With the FORWARDS Mixtape, NOTION aims to defy this trend and craft art that stands the test of time. Each track on the release is imbued with deep emotions, prompting NOTION to reflect on the importance of moving away from the fast-paced consumption of music. “FORWARDS wasn’t really something I sat down with the intention of making as a whole project, it’s more just a collection of stuff I’d been writing over the last 12-18 months that felt like it all made sense as a body of work so it kind of wasn’t a deliberate move. I just knew I wanted to write some music that felt like something you’d sit and listen to all the way through – not skip to the drop and that’s all you’re there for. The whole anti-disposable art thing kind of hit me a few years ago though after just seeing how quickly people move on from stuff online. I feel like creatives put their heart and soul into their work and it’s just become completely normal to see a 15 second clip of something on insta, judge it off that and then move on to the next thing. I get that’s just the world we’re in now but I think it’s really important to not cater art to that model or it just becomes a snowball effect of dumbing everything down. Honestly, I think it would be arrogant of me to think I’m actually going to have any effect on any of this stuff with this project but I just really don’t want to make art that caters to whatever metric some tech company CEO decides is important so i’m just gonna do me, even if the algorithm hates it.” The lead-up to FORWARDS has been an exhilarating time for NOTION. Over the past twelve months, he has celebrated a series of chart-topping releases, each one further solidifying his presence as a tour de force of UK’s expansive dance music landscape. Adding to his music, he is currently in the middle of a monumental North American tour, which has been a major highlight of his year. “It’s actually just been so nice to be able to drop all this music to be honest, as hectic as its been planning it all, I feel like I spent years sitting on tons of unreleased tracks to the point where it became a bit of a running joke so I suppose I’m just making up for lost time haha. Getting to tour North America for the first time as well as Australia and New Zealand again has been amazing too.” Safe to say, NOTION hasn’t been able to get enough of the love he has received during the tour, and he talks about what his plans for the remainder of his tour. “The way people show love in America and Canada is super different which caught me off guard a bit the first time I went earlier this year… like when was the last time someone made you a personalised candy bracelet. It’s very different from home but I feel like they’re really dedicated to the music and it’s super cute how much they support you once they know you out there. After that I’m off to Australia and New Zealand which is always just absolute carnage at the shows and I cannot wait to get there.” Another key element of NOTION’s seminal undertakings is his DANCE DUBS project, a collection of exclusive, unreleased tracks available on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. This project has now garnered over three million plays on SoundCloud (with SKEPTA DUB contributing to 700k plays alone), thousands of purchases, and more than two thousand fans signing up for his broadcast community. Building on this success, NOTION launched a sold-out, eight-date UK tour in 2023, featuring a boat party and a radio show. DANCE DUBS which has now done the rounds of North America and is about to be unleashed in Australia and New Zealand, has played a crucial role in helping NOTION cultivate a loyal fanbase by seamlessly integrating them into his broader artistic vision. “Dance Dubs basically came about because there was a point in like 2021 or 2022 where I just had so many unreleased bootlegs, edits and tracks I’d made that were playing in sets my manager Sam and I were trying to work out what to do with them all. 90% of them couldn’t go on Spotify or get released how we usually would drop music because of samples/copyright, etc so we came up with the idea of kind of branding the whole thing and turning it into a series of free releases and just giving them away. Since then, it’s grown into this whole thing where we’ve done whole tours with it and now, we’re taking it across the world which is nuts. All off the back of a few bootlegs!” Bristol’s impact on major dance music genres is profound and widely recognized. The city’s vibrant cultural and musical scene has been a major source of inspiration and innovation, influencing some of the biggest names in dance music history. NOTION is no exception to this trend, but his relationship with Bristol offers a distinctive viewpoint. While the city’s influence is apparent in his work, NOTION’s perspective is uniquely his own. “I actually grew up in a tiny village in the west midlands which was definitely not quite as musically rich and vibrant as Bristol haha (I didn’t move to Bristol until I was 18) but to be honest I think the fact there wasn’t much going on really helped me nurture my introverted music making side and if I’d grown up in a city with loads of other stuff to do maybe I wouldn’t actually be doing this now. That said Bristol is such a sick place to be as a creative, there’s loads going on here artistically so it’s definitely an inspiring environment to be in.” With the release of the FORWARDS Mixtape now behind him, we were eager to learn about NOTION’s next major and innovative endeavour. Throughout his career, from his debut to the OUTSIDER series and up to FORWARDS, NOTION has been on a relentless quest to surpass the boundaries of his previous work and set new standards, demonstrating his ability to continuously evolve his sound. NOTION is poised to embark on another thrilling chapter, and his back catalogue suggests that his future releases will bring fresh and groundbreaking elements to the table. It’s an exciting time to be a fan, as NOTION’s next move promises to be both innovative and captivating – a move that will once again challenge the status quo and deliver something truly remarkable. “Definitely just trying to lean into being myself and not TRYING to fit into the dance music landscape too much. I’d love to continue doing all the visual stuff that’s made up such a big part of the FORWARDS project too and maybe start applying that to other aspects of my music but it’s expensive and very time-consuming so I don’t know how realistic that is hahaha. It’s probably a bad career move but I’m having much more fun and I feel a lot more comfortable with how I’m expressing myself for the first time ever probably, and long may it continue.”
