Silverlining & Friends: Collaborations 1996-2001
In modern times, artistic longevity can be an elusive beast, but this summer, Amsterdam’s Ninih is delivering a project that illustrates exactly what it takes to remain at the forefront of innovation in the underground while transcending genres and generations. Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to receive the multitude of aliases that pioneering DJ and producer, Silverlining (aka Asad Rizvi), has offered us. While he has been focusing on solo material since 2017, Ninih’s Pieter Jansen spotted that there was a wealth of material in his early collaborative projects with other artists that transcended classification, stood the test of time, and needed to be presented to the world in the right way. Hence, this special triple LP, “Silverlining & Friends: Collaborations 1996–2001,” addresses these landmark explorations with meticulous track selection by Pieter and Asad, with exceptional mastering, beautiful sleeve art, and extensive anecdotes about how the music came about. Throughout the LP, you can expect a host of names that will be familiar to any discerning underground vinyl digger, such as Two Right Wrongans, Impossible Beings, Appleheadz, Southern Comforters, and Bluegoose vs. Silverlining. However, this album weaves a fresh narrative around this diverse selection of tracks—some well-known, others rare or unreleased—from blissful listening into up-tempo house grooves to a gentle return to earth with the final unreleased gem that has been confined to DAT tape for more than 20 years. This body of work accommodates both headphone and heads-down moments over the course of its three discs. Hence, this is more than a reissue compilation of rare 12s, but rather a recontextualisation of a huge body of work with a shared ethos. “At the turn of the millennium”, as Silverlining writes in the sleeve notes, “London was an all-embracing place, and, for us, blending elements from house and techno was just one part of a wider drive to draw together the hotchpotch of our musical and familial backgrounds. With the relentless hype and polemics that have encircled a certain genre for more than a quarter century, a project that embraced the full spectrum of our efforts certainly comes as a breath of fresh air.” The album dives in with the Sigur Rós-esque “Through Wires And Air”, by Impossible Beings. This ethereal opus saw Asad working with Ravi McArthur and Paul Sng during a recording stint in a Canadian log cabin. Having started as a simple strum on an acoustic guitar by Sng, the track developed into an accomplished production with Sng on vocals, McArthur on bass and guitar and Silverlining on keys, as well as live strings later recorded in London. Next up we have the genre-defying, jazz-tinged “Moontan Lotion”, by Appleheadz, a collaboration that started with Charlie Inman, and later became a trio with Kester Lyddon. Tee’ing things up on the B-side, is the 1996 Appleheadz masterpiece, “If You Were A Cat You’d Follow Me”, a highly sought-after deep house weapon that resurfaces time and time again. Both feature masterful sax instrumentation by Inman. As we move to the second disc, we encounter Asad’s endeavour with Brixton hero, Tom Gillieron, as Southern Comforters. “Quick Call The King” features punchy drum patterns in combination with a killer elasticated groove; another classic from the deep and hypnotic catalogue of their Reverberations imprint. Another genre-bender follows with an instrumental of “In My Sky” from Appleheadz, which also featured on the “Moontan” EP. An unclassifiable anthem, utilising broken beats, dreamy synths, guitar by Nigel Price-Wallace, and trumpet by Ralph Lamb, the sum of which combines to create a piece of uniquely sublime depth. Side D kickstarts with vintage Surreal action: Bluegoose (aka Richard Grey) vs. Silverlining’s classic “Taken Over”. This classy breakbeat movement was birthed in the studio above the famous Swag Records where Richard worked at the time, an address which was vital during those years. Impossible Beings feature again with their “Tuesday Morning Milkman” track. Originally released on the Eukahouse sister label, Shaft, the track is both quirky and stripped back as it meanders down a path of curiosity. Two Right Wrongans, an influential partnership shared with the late Nathan Coles, feature on side E with “They’ll Never Get It Right Them Two”. Recorded at Twang Dynasty in Brixton in 1996, it’s a perky trip for the hazy hours of the night, blending elements from house and Detroit techno. “Back To The Imbiss” is another treat from the Impossible Beings project, constructed at Mr. C’s Watershed studio. “Imbiss” refers to their ‘98 road trip around Europe, a homage to the Berlin based shops where they would stock up on weissbier and cheese. A funk laden breakbeat trip, playful and animated as it travels. Last but not least is a previously unreleased track from Impossible Beings, “A Hundred To One”, a mesmerising and musically rich mind trip, with vocals from Kirsty Hawkshaw, backing from Kim Hardy, Ravi on bass, Beth Quist on dulcimer and the late Ray Garraway on drums. The track was the first to be created during the aforementioned log cabin retreat the group shared many years ago. The Beings later added live strings and flute instrumentation in London. A smooth touch to finish this amazing collaboration exploration, and an LP that will perk the ears of the tastemakers. The album was mastered to an exceptional standard by Helmut Erler at Berlin’s legendary Dubplates and Mastering facility. As well as being sonically aligned by the music, the 3 x 12” comes in a beautifully packaged sleeve with illustrations by Rowanna Lacey and graphic design by Nol Cobben, accompanied by line drawings of each of the artists by Wim Swim. The sleeve also features stories about each track, written by esteemed producer and author Harold Heath, highlighting the moment in time the music was made, how they established their relationships and so forth. The notes offer a unique insight to this vital era and how things were rapidly evolving. The back of the sleeve includes a heartfelt introduction to the release written by Asad himself. Ninih is showcasing a true case of admiration with this collection. In a market that moves faster than ever, it is important to share your respect for a prestigious era and the inspiring artists that drove electronic music forward, while blurring the lines between the mass swarm of new genres during this period. “To be absolutely clear,” Silverlining has said to us, “this is not a ‘tech-house’ album. I feel this term simplifies and detracts from the atmosphere of musicality that truly drove us, especially in the Reverberations community of artists that binds most of this work. But we understand that if it helps people, a handful of the tracks here can be defined that way. It just wasn’t the only thing we were all doing. We hope this album helps to correct some major misconceptions of our collective story.” During this influential period, individualism was reaching extreme heights, so it makes it even more charming that these artists, each a musical rarity in their own right, managed to meet and share their creative energy, all with the same outlook and passion. The integrity and futuristic vision of Silverlining and his affiliates is something that can only be applauded. Patrick Ruprecht presents ‘Overthinking Mind’
Today we go a little deep, really digging under the surface of mainstream melodic techno. Patrick Ruprecht is a 33-year-old DJ and producer from Zurich, Switzerland. He just landed on Black Rose Recordings with a 2-track EP, Overthinking Mind. The tunes mark the 18th release of the label. Black Rose Recordings is an independent music label, founded in 2020 by Erly Tepshi during the melodic techno wave of the same time. Now, the imprint has solidified its position having released and launched several songs and artists in the melodic techno panorama. Kicking off the Overthinking Mind EP there’s the title track. The sounds include a synth arp that accompanies you for the entire length of the record. The melodic bass gives you an emotional vibe against the powerful stabs. The break starts with a hypnotic synth and then develops in a more majestic way. Odyssey Beyond Horizon is the second installment. In collaboration with Øntold, is the darker track of the Ep. It ranges between warmer and acid synth, the groovy bassline and the metallic percussions make the track strong and deep. The Overthinking Mind EP is another step forward in the developed of the label. It’s also another incredible EP from Patrick Ruprecht and we can’t wait to hear more. Hailing from Central Florida and Northern California, this DJ/Producer duo embodies their motto “no dream too big,” inspiring fans to pursue their passions regardless of unconventional backgrounds. Just thought that he’d have better aim,” sets a tone of sardonic disappointment, highlighting the complex coping mechanisms often employed after heartbreak. “How The Great Have Fallen” examines projection and defense mechanisms common in post-breakup trauma cycles. While Kode PinK doesn’t endorse wishing misfortune on others, they recognize it as a relatable human experience worth exploring and their distinctive pop approach serves as an engaging backdrop for this narrative. Burning Man Attendee Fractures Spine After Falling From Art Installation
A woman is recovering from a fractured spine and rib after falling off a structure at the 2024 edition of Burning Man. Rachael Gingery on Saturday fell roughly 20 feet from an art installation resembling a sinking ship, which was, along with a 100-foot serpent, part of a display called "Naga & The Captainess." In a post shared to Facebook, she says she climbed a ladder into the structure's crow's nest before attempting to slide across a tilted pole, around which attendees could wrap their legs. However, the weight of her backpack and coat inverted her body to the underside of the pole, forcing her to flip and ultimately lose her grip. The next thing Gingery remembers, she said, was "waking up on the ground surrounded by medics and unable to move." View the original article to see embedded media. "I was told that I was convulsing immediately after impact and looping my thoughts before returning to consciousness after a few minutes," Gingery wrote, adding that she doesn't blame the structure's developers. "I remember laying on the ground feeling shocks of pain course through my body and being unable to move as I was loaded into an ambulance." From there, Gingery says she spent over 16 hours in triage in a medical tent on the playa before an ambulance transported her to the trauma unit of a Reno-area hospital. Doctors there treated her for contusions of her lung and spleen as well as the fractured spine and rib. Gingery called the ordeal "one of the scariest experiences" of her life but remains in good spirits, referring to her outing in Black Rock City as her "best burn yet." She says she's expected to heal within the next six to eight weeks. This year's Burning Man took place from August 25th to September 2nd.

Women Falls From Tall Climbable Burning Man Art
A woman unfortunately fell from a tall climbable Burning Man art. Rachael Gingery fell from an art piece resembling a sinking ship. Just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, Gingery climbed the wooden planks suspended on steel cables to the installation’s tilting crow’s nest, which sat atop a slanting pole that festival attendees could slide down. She fell about 20 feet. Luckily, she seems to be doing fine and will make a full recovery. After losing her grip on the pole and falling, Gingery was transported by ambulance to Burning Man’s clinic, Rampart. There, staff performed x-rays and ultrasounds. After the clinic visit, advanced imaging was deemed necessary, so Gingery was then transported by ambulance to Reno. There, CT scans determined that she fractured her spine and a rib, and sustained bruises to a few internal organs. Rachael had this to say: “We do not blame the art or artists in any way…We understand the risks we take at Burning Man and are grateful to the artists for bringing their art. We will 100% be out there again next year!” The art piece, called Naga & the Captainess, is one of the prized sculptures at this year’s event. Located in deep playa, it features not only the sinking parts of a ship but also a sea serpent and interactive treasure chests, cargo crates, and wine barrels. It is estimated that between 30 and 40 Burners require medical transports every year. This year’s exodus was damped by a major dust storm. BIGGER THAN US Releases Third Single “We’re Not Alone”
Duo unveils their third single, exploring the human journey and universal connection with insane videos made for the stage. The duo BIGGER THAN US has released their latest single, titled “We’re Not Alone.” This track adds to a project that has developed organically, driven by a creative force that the artists themselves describe as something bigger than them. “We’re Not Alone” marks the third release by BIGGER THAN US a collaboration between Marieme and Stephan Jacobs AKA BOSA that explores themes of human vulnerability and personal evolution. The song, originally composed by Marieme, came to life with BOSA’s contribution, bringing new layers of sound and experimentation to the composition. The single “We’re Not Alone” is described by the artists as a sonic and emotional journey. The track blends intense soundscapes with an energy that aims for both introspection and empowerment. The central message of the song is that, despite the uncertainties and fears everyone faces, no one is alone in their experiences and feelings. The origin of the BIGGER THAN US project, as reported by the members, was unintentional. BOSA and Marieme began working together without a defined plan, allowing the creative process to guide them. This intuitive approach is reflected in “We’re Not Alone,” where Marieme, who wrote and recorded the track some time ago, finally found the right sound through collaboration with BOSA. From a technical perspective, BOSAs production incorporates a blend of digital and analog tools. The song features harmonies synthesized with the vocals, resampling with RMX-1000 and Kaoss Pad KP3, as well as bass sampling with Sub37, creating an atmosphere that evokes influences from Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk, and Eskmo. The combination of these elements results in a sound that is both familiar and innovative. “We’re Not Alone” is not just a song but a reflection on the human condition. Marieme shares that the composition emerged during a period of questioning the meaning of life and the fear of the unknown. The lyrics address fear and the need for evolution, offering a message of connection and solidarity. BIGGER THAN US continues to explore new musical directions, with plans to release more music in the near future, including an upcoming single and the much-anticipated debut EP. “We’re Not Alone” is now available on major streaming platforms, and the duo invites everyone to connect with the song’s message and feel the power of unity through art.
