Charlotte de Witte and Amelie Lens announce their grand return to the stage together at Flanders Expo in Ghent (Belgium). After weeks of teasing on social media and a hidden message during their shows, it is finally clear what the 2 DJs are up to. And what they’ve planned promises to be a once in a lifetime experience: on January 31 and February 1 (2025), for the first time ever, Belgian techno icons Amelie Lens and Charlotte de Witte come together for a unique back-to-back set. This promises to be an unparalleled highlight in the techno world. Flanders Expo is once again transforming into the biggest techno temple ever, with 20,000 ravers each night, a spectacular visual production and the two leading women of our techno scene. The full line-up will be announced at a later date. Amelie Lens has taken techno to another level, elevating it to new heights through her two record labels, LENSKE and EXHALE, and her event series. The attitude is a simple one: techno can be for everyone, and through her tireless passion for music and unique use of her own vocals, she has opened the scene to new listeners, new fans, and new ravers. Community is the driving force of all Amelie Lens projects and is most visible through EXHALE. Global shows, a successful three-year residency that brought techno to Ibiza by acting as a safe place for everyone to come and share their passion for music, and now her own solo show, produced independently, all reflect this commitment. Her successes are well documented across multiple covers, a prestigious Global Underground City mix, but above all, her focus remains on the dance floor, where she always was, and always will be, a raver at heart. Amelie says: “I couldn’t be more excited to join forces with Charlotte! The time has finally come to unite and create something truly unique and special for our communities. We’re one scene, united by our unstoppable love for the music!” Charlotte de Witte (KNTXT) is more than just a DJ; She is an icon in the electronic music scene with an unparalleled influence. As a DJ, producer, and record executive, she has quickly established herself as one of the most sought-after artists in the industry. Her signature approach effortlessly mixes genres with an intense energy. Since her breakthrough in 2010, de Witte has built a devoted fan base and has catapulted from underground star in Belgium to global sensation. This marks the fourth consecutive year for Charlotte at Flanders Expo. In December 2023, she was named the World’s No. 1 Techno DJ by DJ Magazine for the fourth time in a row. Listen to Ellie Goulding and Four Tet's Haunting Collaboration, "In My Dreams"
Four Tet Ellie Goulding "In My Dreams" In a world of sonic conformity, "In My Dreams" is a refreshing breath of unconventional brilliance. Released moments ago via Three Six Zero Recordings, the new single is a distorted dreamscape of dance music that's both mesmerizing and unsettling. Goulding's voice, as delicate as ever, plunges us into a dream within a dream. She sings of "just visiting" our dreams, a phantasmic figure gliding through the subconscious. Meanwhile, Four Tet's production adds layers upon layers of grungy intensity. Four Tet says the new collaboration began when Goulding came up with a song idea and recorded voice notes containing lyrics and melodies. She then sent them in text messages and asked him if he was interested in producing a track around the vocal bits. "I found other noises to go with it and made 'In My Dreams,'" he explained in a press release. "[Goulding] added some new vocal parts but we ended up keeping the voice note recordings as the main vocal. I guess the first take is often the most magical. I wanted to make something that was all about juxtaposing harsh aggressive sound with the delicate and intimate." The influential producer previously enlisted Goulding for a feature on "Baby," a track from 2020's Sixteen Oceans, his 10th studio album. He then remixed Goulding's "Easy Lover" in 2022, leading to a Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording. You can find "In My Dreams" on streaming platforms here. Anna Lunoe Announces Debut Album, Drops Uplifting Title Track "Pearl"
With an uncanny ability to set an ecstatic mood through her music, the inimitable Anna Lunoe is set to release her debut album, Pearl. It's a big moment for the prolific Australian artist, who says she's laying bare her artistry in ways fans haven't yet seen. "When I started out in dance music as a local DJ, my dream was to fill dancefloors and pay my rent," Lunoe said in a press release. "As my career expanded and the industry changed and I got thrown into new challenge after new challenge, I always felt like my artist voice had to be secondary to my DJ needs. So in a way this marks a kinda colossal shift in perspective on my career to date, putting my artistry at the front in a way I never have before." Lunoe, who will soon support The Weeknd on tour in Australia, is known for her versatility as a producer, creating rapturous dance music rooted in house, garage, techno and more. Following July's release of "Only Love," she's now back on Nina Las Vegas' NLV Records with "Pearl," the title track from the new album. Though powerful in her production, Lunoe infuses an airy softness into the uplifting single to deliver a bubbly track fit for both a sunny stroll or a sweaty dancefloor. The record, she says, finds her at her "most sincere." "To me the sentiment in this song is about fighting for your spirit and creative force in a world that isn't really designed for us to hold on to it," Lunoe said in a press release. "Sonically this was an exercise in emotion and clarifying a feeling as opposed to straight up club tune-making—it's more sincere than I've allowed myself to be publicly before, but those few who get to hear my scruffy demos know this Anna well." You can check out the new single below and pre-save Pearl here. The album is scheduled to release October 25th, 2024. Girl Math: How Nala and VNSSA Are Steeping Electronic Music in Feminist Punk
Before Nala and VNSSA ever started DJing together, they were exchanging oyster photos in a group chat they named, "We're F***king Eating." Although the food photos have since slowed down and dachshund pics now reign supreme, the two continue to share not only a palpable chemistry, but also a companionship that has only grown stronger over the years. The friendship began thanks to Dirtybird. They met in-person for the first time mid-pandemic, around 2021, at a drive-in rave. VNSSA, whose real name is Vanessa Barnes, arrived early to see Nala, Stefania Aronin, play her set. After crossing paths at the show, the two then started hanging out and DJing together. "We would complain about the male-dominated music industry to each other, and share experiences with that and connect through that," Barnes tells EDM.com in an exclusive interview. VNSSA and Nala of Girl Math.VNSSA/Nala/Instagram It wasn't long before Barnes and Aronin were booked for their first b2b performance together during Miami Music Week with Walker & Royce's label, Rules Don't Apply. "[Walker & Royce] were joking that our duo name would be VaNala Ice," Barnes recalls with a laugh. "That’s where it started and then we were getting more b2b offers, and we were like, maybe we should just make this a thing." As the demand for their b2b sets increased, the duo had to decide on a collaborative nom de plume. They were preparing for their debut performance at Coachella's beloved Do LaB when the name finally materialized. "There was a moment where I was like, it should be 'girl' something," Aronin says. "It had that punk edge to it." "Our friend Nikki has this joke: four plus four equals 'ate,'" Barnes adds. "So we were like, 'Girl Math,' that should be the name. But it's more than just that... Having 'girl' in the name gives us empowerment and it feels like a feminist movement." View the original article to see embedded media. Girlhood means "everything," Aronin and Barnes agreed. "There's this implied thing with girlhood that's like, we're great at everything and we hold it all down, and sometimes that goes without credit," Aronin explains. "So girlhood is about getting shit done, even if it means not totally getting acknowledged for the work that went into it." Nala and VNSSA, each of whom are star DJs and producers in their own right, found that girlhood in the music industry was inextricably linked with isolation and disillusionment. The opportunity to collaborate cultivated a sense of unity and comfort, they said, that ultimately aided in their creative process and tightened their bond. "Touring by yourself, it’s really easy to get burnt out and it’s just boring alone. So it’s a lot more fun having a partner in crime," Barnes says. "Playing together, you have another person where you can bounce ideas off and instead of just trusting yourself, you have someone else that you can rely on. So it's just nice to have that kind of support." Girl Math have now performed at Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Splash House and other major music festivals. They're now gearing up for their first headlining show, which is scheduled for November 1st at the Chocolate Factory Theater in New York City. VNSSA and Nala of Girl Math.VNSSA/Nala/Instagram Drawing inspiration from their respective backgrounds in rock music, the pair found common ground in live instrumentation and began to infuse those shared interests into their music with a punk twist. Aronin said she's great at "coming up with random sound design concepts" while Barnes provides a lot of Girl Math's "structure, stability and direction." "It's just my anxiety," Barnes says with a laugh, blushing over the compliment. While Aronin brings her affinity for Riot grrrl-influenced vocals to the table, Barnes offers drumming skills with a metal focus. It was a match made in heaven. "I thought being a drummer in a metal band was the coolest thing you could ever do prior to being a DJ," Aronin gushes. "So I was like, we need to incorporate this history on both sides and turn this into something that's rowdy and fun and chaotic. That’s where we met in the middle—a rock-focused approach to music. And when I say structure, I really mean drums. She brings the drums on a really solid, structured level." "We want to take as much live music inspiration as possible," Barnes adds. "I think you'll be able to hear that in our production as well. Because there's a lot of live drum elements along with synths and Nala’s vocals. It gives it a very gritty, rebellious sound. It's the mix of us together." Through the singular lens of Girl Math, Aronin and Barnes say they ultimately hope to inspire other female producers in the electronic music scene. "Do whatever the fuck you want and make whatever the fuck you want," Barnes says with a grin. "Don't worry what anyone else thinks. Do whatever makes you feel good." "Surround yourself with people who are supportive," Aronin adds, "and fuck everyone else." The Global DNB Collective Announces Their Latest Jungle/Drum & Bass Single ‘Stuck in my Head’
The Global DNB Collective’s newest single, “Stuck in My Head,” is a riveting collaboration featuring three veteran producers from Charlotte, North Carolina. This track explores the consuming nature of obsession through its electrifying beats and unforgettable hook. The accompanying music video reinforces this theme with a dramatic narrative of a man who becomes a cyborg in his quest to overcome his fixation. Boasting an undeniably powerful energy and compelling story, “Stuck in My Head” offers an immersive audio-visual experience that’s not to be missed. GETTING TO KNOW ELECTRON-C, DARK ADAPTATION, & NOISESMITH Introduce yourself and your project We are Andrew, Tristan and Dan, aka Electron-C, Dark Adaptation, and Noisesmith (respectively). We are drum & bass producers & DJs hailing from Charlotte, NC. Explain what musical genre fits you best EC – Jungle/Drum & Bass and all the flavors of subgenres that fall within that. Mostly darker stuff. DA – Jump up, Rollers and Dancefloor NS – Melodic tearout meets dark neuro meets hard dancefloor with a pinch of jungle. Were you connected with music from a young age and did anyone inspire you? EC – I was dancing to music as soon as I was able to stand on 2 feet. I had a Casio keyboard at 9 years old, and would play Depeche Mode melodies by ear. It just spiraled from there. DA – I wasn’t raised around a lot of music besides metal and country, then deathcore, punk, a lot of hip-hop, R&B and trap music into my teen years. Then in my mid twenties I found reggae. Someone who inspired me within music has always been a variety of people like $uicideboy$, John Paul White of The Civil Wars, and Tom Barber of Chelsea Grin. NS – Oh god yes. My mom was Cuban and music was an integral part of our household. Through my love of underground hip hop, I discovered DNB in high school and have been in love ever since. What kickstarted your music career? EC – I’ve been recording music since the 90s, but when the pandemic hit, I took the extra time to focus on producing and releasing professional grade drum & bass. DA – My music career started when I received my first guitar at 13 (2005) and I’ve spent the last 19 years since then chasing the music. NS – I started writing in 2004 as part of the group titanZERO. After an extended hiatus, I started my solo project Noisesmith in 2022. Tell us more about your sound and how it’s evolved over time EC – In the early 90s it was industrial, in the late 90s it was big beat and jungle. For the last 20 years, I’ve refined the focus to modern jungle influenced rollers and dancefloor drum & bass. DA – My sound is still undefined, but if I had to I would say that its a blend of beautiful melodics and vocals combined with heavy baselines, tight footwork, and a trap aspect. NS – Early on, I wanted to make the hardest DNB known to man. Now, I want to tell a story with my sound. Invoke emotions with melodies, incorporate elements of hip hop, metal, industrial, synthwave etc, all while giving a nod to the hard shit. Any words you want to share to encourage other artists or producers? EC – I’ve had the following on a notepad on my desktop for the better part of the last 5 years: “The way we solve problems is often more important than the difficulty of the problems we are facing. KEEP FUCKING GOING DUDE. Don’t get discouraged. Make so much noise, they HAVE to hear you. Do it again, do it louder. Make music that’s so big it is undeniable.” DA – Your snare could be better. NS – Don’t try to be the “next” anyone, be the first YOU. Input = Output. Break the rules. How do you nurture your industry relationships? EC – Be a good human being. Duality is an illusion. Treat others like they’re your best mates. Help others as much as you can. If someone is a terrible person, cut the tie and walk away. And always keep pushing forward. DA – Being genuine, helping lift others up, everyone who loves the same music you do is a friend, you should treat them that way. NS – Stay humble. Support others. Don’t be a dick. Laugh at yourself. Is there anyone you’d like to thank that’s been crucial to your journey? EC – too many to list! My wife, Jade. Darren (SST) and Greg (The Lion’s Den) for the coaching and mentoring. DJ Met (RIP) for the early sounding board. Lorin (Base Industry) for believing in the vision early on. Tim (Kadilak) & Aaron (Snapback) at Rolled Up for pushing me to do it again and do it better. Jamie (Oneduz) for the dedication on this release. DA – The top is my partner Katie who introduced me to drum & bass and has helped me bloom into who I am today and Electron-C (Andy) who always pushes me to do better and so many other QC crew/family who supports. NS – My incredible wife Kimmy, my muse and everything. Jay Kronos, for joining me on this journey and being a brother. Tony Dubz, for teaching me the art of the mix and supporting me from day one. Jermel Yellow Fever, for pushing me back into this world—endless thanks. Zardonic, for believing in me and helping launch Noisesmith with some incredible tracks. And most importantly, to YOU, for sharing our love for the music. Thank you! Name 3 songs you love and what they mean to you + Youtube links EC – NIN – Wish, Future Prophecy – Dreadlock, Bru-C x Bou – Streetlife DA – Sigur Rós – Varúð, Goldfinger – Superman, Delta Heavy x Koven – Feel NS – Dom & Kemal – Moulin Rouge, Technical Itch & Dylan – The Legend (Evol Intent Remix), Company Flow – End To End Burners What’s your favourite piece of studio equipment or software? EC – All about the T-Glue DA – Thermal NS – PHASEPLANT! Name your favourite club or festival and how it makes you feel EC – Performing at EDC Orlando was pretty epic. Hospitality in the Park was ridiculous. DA – Hulaween! NS – Therapy Sessions! Name an outlandish rider request? EC – Only green M&Ms DA – 31 origami pigeons in light blue construction paper NS – A wall of framed sex toys Favourite clubbing memory and who or what did it involve? EC – Hybrid live at The Groove in Orlando in like 99 I think? Amazing. DA – The first time I ever saw DieselBoy live, at Serj here in Charlotte, the energy he brought was unlike anything I had experienced at the time and just stoked the fire for my musical journey that much more. NS – Andy C at Tonic in Charlotte NC. There were only a handful of people in attendance, it was GLORIOUS. To this day, the vibe is unmatched. What famous quote represents you best? EC – Be here now. Ram Dass DA – To lose patience is to lose the battle. NS – Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable If you could play at any venue, where would it be and why? EC – Red Rocks. That would just be a profound moment. DA – Printworks London! Something about it just feels like home. NS – Doesn’t matter, as long as you’re there. Music is….. (explain more) EC – Everything. DA – Life Saving NS – A way to escape the pains of life, a way to celebrate the joys in life, a way to connect with people throughout life. In other words, music is life. One song you really couldn’t live without and why? EC – Ludovico Einaudi – Nuvole Bianche DA – Solomon France – Jump In NS – Dr Dre – The Chronic. The whole damn album. Namedrop your favourite 5 artists or DJs (past or present) EC – Bou, Camo & Krooked, DJ Craze, Friction, S.P.Y DA – Hedex, $uiceboy$, Camo & Krooked, London Elektricity, Run The Jewels NS – El-P, Technical Itch, Meshuggah, Mick Gordon, Graciela Wall (my mom) What was your first music memory and how did it fuel your fire? EC – The first big one was Nucleus – Jam On It – I’ve always loved breakbeats and bass music. DA – Ozzie Osbourne – Thunder Underground, my first metal cd ever. NS – Dara’s Renegade Continuum II mix. First taste of DnB, the rest is history. Tell us more about your plans for the future EC – Thai hot & Milkshakes! Then a nap. DA – More things like this… oh and a nap for sure NS – 2 EPs, several collabs/remixes, an all-original studio mix and… a nap. Any worldly advice you’d like to share? EC – When choosing the restaurant for dinner before the show, avoid making the whole group go eat Indian food. DA – Be kind. NS – Life ebbs and flows. Whenever things aren’t going right, just know that the pendulum will swing back in the opposite direction. Keep your head up. This third part includes music from Indira Paganotto, Ann Clue, Bantwanas, Romain Garcia, Brina Knauss, Vitalic and Notre Dame. COSMOS 0.0.92 (this is the name of the third part on Spotify) is in conjunction with their highly acclaimed and sold-out festival that took place in May. And, that’s not all! In celebration of the compilation, each single (excluding those from the live-streamed performances) will be paired by a compelling video series titled MATTER. All videos are inspired by the theme of the 2024 festival, air and space. The videos will be released on the Cercle Records YouTube channel. Josef Gatti and Cercle’s Head of Video, Mathieu Glissant are the directors of the new series MATTER. But what are the tunes and the artists in this third COSMOS release? Kickstarting the third part of the series is Romain Garcia. Born in Paris with Spanish roots, he has always infused his music with diverse cultural influences. He is not new to Cercle. In 2020, Cercle Records released Cappadocia, a featuring between Romain Garcia and Ben Böhmer which garnered over 22 million streams. Romain Garcia kicks off the compilation with Kako, injecting a captivating blend of melodic house with driving percussion and a mesmerizing vocal, ideal for closing a set. Up next is the African collective Bantwanas with Mama. The song is a deeply emotive, organic afro house cut, positioning them at the forefront of artists who are redefining African house music. The collective’s sound is a danceable and soulful blend that captures South African musical heritage while innovating in the electronic music genre. Notre Dame is a Parisian electronic music artist, musician, and producer. He has been influenced by French electronic legends like Daft Punk and Justice. His featured single Kids Never Stop Dancing, is an indie-dance piece with an upbeat, groovy melody and positive energy, representing his message of warmth and freedom. Brina Knauss, a Slovenian DJ, is celebrated for her perfectionist approach and exceptional DJ skills. Her track Drowning is an indie melodic house piece characterized by a fast melody, heavy kick, and varying rhythms, blending indie and house notes with touches of techno, evoking a summery, solar atmosphere. Vitalic is a pioneering French electronic music producer and composer, renowned for his influential debut LP OK Cowboy, which achieved gold status. In 2021, he announced a tour for his fifth album “DISSIDÆNCE” while celebrating his 20-year career. His track You Are Not Alone, featuring Vimala, showcases a techno-influenced sound with melodic, dark disco, electro, and techno elements, culminating in a signature massive drop and an organic, instrumental melody. Ann Clue, a passionate German DJ and producer is next. Her single Ethereal exemplifies her powerful and energetic style, featuring cosmic themes, heavy kicks, and futuristic vocals, taking listeners on a dynamic sonic journey. If Only I Knew is a high-energy track that conveys nothing but positivity, and is a masterclass in Denis Sulta‘s signature style, combining infectious melodies, pulsating rhythms, and an uplifting energy that transcends the dance floor. Alongside his musical output, Denis has played at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Ibiza’s Pikes as well as showcasing his ‘Sulta Selects‘ takeovers at Tomorrowland, ADE and Printworks. Concluding the COSMOS compilation is Indira Paganotto. Indira’s energetic eclecticism and constant smile have become her trademarks. Adriatique’s Siamese drops ‘Bonton / Shadow EP’
Toto Chiavetta, in collaboration with Ella Dvornik’s Alterella project and Enya II, presents the comprehensive Bonton / Shadow EP. Originally released a few years ago, both tracks are now being reintroduced by Siamese. The label brings both tunes into our sonic universe with renewed focus. The ToMak Revision of Alterella’s “Bonton” was reworked by Toto Chiavetta with the support of the Sead Ajaz Ensemble. He recognized the track’s dancefloor potential despite its origins in the hip-hop and trap genres. Ella Dvornik, who created the original version, also contributed to this exciting revision. The idea of transforming a hip-hop/trap track into a dancefloor-ready piece is fascinating in how different musical elements can be repurposed and recontextualized to create something entirely new while still honoring the original. “Shadow (Tape One Remix)”, a remix by Toto Chiavetta of Enya II’s wonderfully eclectic original track, has quickly become a staple in Adriatique’s recent sets, as Toto skillfully adapted the track for the dancefloor. The Chordial Remix of “Shadow”, another collaboration involving Toto with the assistance of Tarek Yamani, takes a different approach. This remix deconstructs the original with a dreamy yet infectious touch, perfect for special moments on the dancefloor. Enjoy. Layton Giordani releases ‘Better Than U Thought’ on Factory 93
New York City wonderboy Layton Giordani is back on Insomniac’s techno imprint Factory 93 with Better Than U Thought. In the last few years, he has cemented his status as a prestigious tastemaker in the techno world. His respected decade-long discography has pushed Giordani to the forefront of the next generation of underground producers. This vocal-led peak-time techno track revolves around an enchanting hook. In the meantime, its silky croons sit atop running basslines, whirring risers, sharp percussion, cooing harmonic accents, and an acid-fueled resolution, closing the track in fine form. I was playing a Euro weekend in Amsterdam/Berlin, and I was looking to play a more driven techno set, but I also wanted to have a more sexy aesthetic, so I started surfing the web for vocals. I found this amazing slow vocal, sped it up, added an acid hook, and here we are – Layton Giordani. Layton Giordani stands firmly as one of the most popular talents of techno’s new school. He is a true artist in every sense of the word. His pioneering musical vision serves as a contemporary voice for the younger generation. Spending years acquiring knowledge from musical greats, the 28-year-old possesses a wealth of experience far beyond his years. He has now undeniably earned his rank in the upper echelon of techno. Layton Giordani – ‘Better Than U Thought’ is out now via Factory 93. The post Layton Giordani releases ‘Better Than U Thought’ on Factory 93 appeared first on The Groove Cartel.
