Diwali Celebrations Around the World: The Festival of Lights Across Continents
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant festivals in India and holds a deep cultural and spiritual meaning for millions of people worldwide. While its origins lie in the Indian subcontinent, the vibrant and joyous celebrations of Diwali have transcended borders, with the festival now being observed by communities across the globe. Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It’s a time when homes are decorated with oil lamps and candles (diyas), fireworks illuminate the night sky, and families come together to celebrate with delicious food, colorful rangoli (decorative patterns), and the sharing of gifts. Whether it’s in the bustling streets of New Delhi or the multicultural neighborhoods of New York, the essence of Diwali remains the same—unity, joy, and the spreading of light. This article will explore Diwali celebrations around the world, providing insight into how different countries embrace this beautiful festival while blending it with their unique cultural flavors. Let’s embark on a global journey to see how Diwali is celebrated across continents in 2024. Diwali Celebrations in India: The Heart of the Festival Diwali Celebrations in India: The Heart of the Festival India is the birthplace of Diwali, and its celebrations here are as diverse as the country itself. The festival typically spans five days, with each region of India observing its own traditions, customs, and rituals. Northern India: Diwali in the north is often associated with the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his 14-year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. In cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi, homes and temples are lit up with diyas and candles, markets buzz with energy, and grand firework displays light up the skies. The night of Lakshmi Puja is central to the celebrations, where devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Southern India: In South India, Diwali is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, marking Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Here, people wake up early, apply oil to their bodies, and take a ceremonial bath. This cleansing ritual is considered auspicious and is believed to rid the body of evil and darkness. The celebrations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are often quieter but still filled with family gatherings, sweets, and lighting of lamps. Western India: In Gujarat and Maharashtra, Diwali marks the New Year according to the Hindu calendar. The festival is a time for prayers, business ventures, and seeking blessings for prosperity. The highlight here is Govardhan Puja and Annakut, where hundreds of food offerings are prepared and presented to deities in temples. Why You Should Visit: Experiencing Diwali in India is witnessing the festival in its most authentic form. From the cultural richness of the rituals to the grandeur of the decorations and fireworks, India offers a magical Diwali experience. Diwali Celebrations in Nepal: The Festival of Tihar In Nepal, Diwali is celebrated as Tihar, a festival that spans five days and is similar in essence to India’s Diwali but with some unique Nepali traditions. Tihar is also known as the Festival of Lights, but it emphasizes not only the human connection but also the importance of animals in daily life. Day 1 – Kaag Tihar: The first day of Tihar is dedicated to crows, considered the messengers of death in Hindu mythology. People offer food to crows to ward off bad omens. Day 2 – Kukur Tihar: On this day, dogs are honored for their loyalty and protection. Dogs are garlanded with marigold flowers and offered special treats, symbolizing the bond between humans and animals. Day 3 – Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja: Cows are worshiped on the third day, representing prosperity and well-being. The evening is marked by Laxmi Puja, where homes and temples are decorated with lamps to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Day 4 – Govardhan Puja: Similar to India, this day celebrates the agricultural roots of the region, with offerings made to bulls and other animals used in farming. Day 5 – Bhai Tika: The last day of Tihar is dedicated to siblings, with sisters performing rituals to ensure the longevity and happiness of their brothers. Celebrating 11 Years Of Avicii’s Legendary Album ‘True’
When you try to think of artists or bands out there that have the best debut albums, it’s hard to not think of Avicii’s 2013 masterpiece ‘True.’ Putting a new spin on EDM by adding in elements of country and soul was experimental to say the least, but Avicii masterfully blended the genres together creating an album that stamped his name as one of the biggest EDM artists in the world. He had already started off the early 2010’s incredibly with one of his most iconic songs ‘Levels’ along with some other massive hits like ‘Silhouettes’ and ‘Seek Bromance’ which put Avicii on the map. Despite his success with these house classics, he decided he wanted to try go in a sonically different direction and disrupt the electronic music scene with something new. He would shock the world when he performed at Ultra Music Festival and instead of playing the usual house music, the Swedish DJ would unveil his new sound of EDM and country. This drastic change in style left a lot of people confused and the response from critics and fans was very mixed largely leaning towards negative. Although the initial response wasn’t good, both Avicii and his manager Ash Pournouri had faith in the music. Over the coming weeks the negativity towards the new material mellowed and then it all changed when preceding the release of the full album ‘Wake Me Up’ was released. Following its release, it would go to number one in the charts in 22 different countries, became one of the songs of the summer, and has gone on to garner 2.4 million streams on Spotify. Everyone was captivated by this new style and so hype began to build for the release of the album. ‘True’ went beyond all expectations reaching number 1 on the Billboard US Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart along with going to number 1 in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Australia. The diversity on the album was incredible ranging from the house based ‘Dear Boy’ to the beautiful ballad ‘Addicted To You’ to the heavily country inspired ‘Hey Brother.’ Every track was amazingly produced and contained brilliant performances from collaborators from a variety of genres including the likes of Nile Rogers, Adam Lambert, Aloe Blacc and Imagine Dragons who co-wrote ‘Heart Upon My Sleeve.’ This track would later appear on Avicii’s posthumous album‘Tim’ where Imagine Dragons vocalist Dan Reynolds would return to provide vocals for the song. Since its release the album has had over 4 billion streams on Spotify and is widely regarded as Avicii’s best work. ‘True’ was the perfect title for this album as it was his true vision for the music that he wanted to make. He didn’t just follow trends he made music he loved which he continued to do throughout his career which always made him stand out from the rest. Avicii was a musical genius who amazed everyone he worked with and will forever live on through his music as a true legend.

fabric: The Book chronicles the 25 years of the legendary London night club
fabric captures the journey of a small group of enthusiasts who, rebelling against the commercialisation of the rave scene, converted a derelict meat store in an unfashionable part of London into a venue that remains a cathedral for undiluted dance music with a global following. Featuring stories about the club’s birth, struggles and successes, as well as rare photography and iconic artwork, and an oral history by Joe Muggs featuring over one hundred testimonies from the legendary DJs associated with fabric, this is a celebration of the colossal impact fabric has had on club culture over the last quarter of a century. Above all, it’s a story about the misfits and visionaries who made it happen, the curators and resident DJs who have kept it true to its roots, and the experiences of clubbers on the dancefloor. Cameron Leslie, fabric Co-Founder & Director, said: ‘Creating this book has been a remarkable journey and a rewarding experience. Seeing that, even after 25 years, our contribution is still impactful in the London scene is humbling and is certainly something that motivates us to keep pushing boundaries as well as supporting the community that surrounds us and has given us so much. I hope this book will be well received and will serve as a testament to the legacy of fabric in this truly wonderful world of electronic music.’ Author Joe Muggs said: ‘You know how people say, “If these walls could speak…”? Well, after months of interviews, research and writing, I genuinely did feel like those walls deep under Farringdon were sharing their stories of thousands of nights and millions of dancing bodies passing through. fabric is a living entity with a personality all of its own, a constantly evolving work of art in its own right, a channel for collective consciousness, and getting the chance to immerse so deeply in quarter of a century of its life was just glorious.’ Publisher Lee Brackstone said: ‘fabric is not only one of the greatest clubs in the world it is also a place of enormous cultural importance to the UK music scene and this book, published to coincide with celebrations around their 25th anniversary, is a stunning visual and written testament to those achievements. From its pre-fabric days as a cold store wreck in Smithfield’s meat market to countless nights of dancefloor mayhem, the infamous shuttering a decade ago, the glorious re-opening and beyond, this book is a lavish trip down memory lane for clubbers, ex-ravers, and fans of electronic music in all its iterations. Not every club deserves its own coffee-table history; the challenge with telling the fabric story was keeping it to one beautifully designed volume only.’ fabric will be published by White Rabbit on 3 December in hardback, with two special editions to follow on 17 December, all available to preorder now. Nocturnal Wonderland Festival Cancelled Due to Impact of Southern California Wildfires
The 2024 edition of Nocturnal Wonderland, an electronic dance music festival held in San Bernardino, has been cancelled due to the impact of California's devastating Line Fire, according to the event's organizers. Insomniac Events today released a statement announcing they've pulled the plug on the outing, its longest-running festival property, after engaging in discussions with local authorities. "While Nocturnal Wonderland was cleared to move forward at the time of our last update, we are saddened to inform you that new fires in the San Bernardino area have ignited over the past 36 hours and are now approaching the Glen Helen Amphitheater," the company said. "The health and safety of festival attendees and staff is our highest priority." The destructive wildfires have scorched over 26,000 acres in San Bernardino County and was 5% contained as of Tuesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. California Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a State of Emergency in the county and secured federal assistance to support the department's response. Roughly 36,000 structures are estimated to be at risk. The blaze, which began Thursday night, is expected to grow significantly this week and evacuation warnings have been sent out to adjacent communities, officials said. "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires throughout San Bernardino and Southern California," Insomniac's statement added. "We understand the importance of ensuring that local resources are fully dedicated to managing the fires and protecting the surrounding communities." Nocturnal Wonderland was scheduled to take place September 14-15 in San Bernardino's Glen Helen Regional Park. Kaskade, RL Grime, San Holo, Jessica Audiffred and many more electronic music stars were set to perform. Ticket-holders will soon receive an email with details regarding refunds, Insomniac said. Four Tet And Ellie Goulding Collaborate On ‘In My Dreams’
Four Tet and Ellie Goulding have teamed up once again for the former’s latest track, ‘In My Dreams’. Out now via Three Six Zero Recordings, ‘In My Dreams’ serves as the sequel collaboration between Four Tet and Ellie Goulding after the British Electro-Pop star vocalist appeared on the Electronic music veteran’s track, ‘Baby’, from his 2020 album, Sixteen Oceans. Furthermore, the release of the track also comes after another collaboration in the form of the producer releasing his remix of the vocalist’s ‘Easy Lover’ back in 2022. That remix then earned him a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Remixed Recording’. According to an article from Pitchfork, the road to the production and release of this track started off Ellie Goulding texting Four Tet at the end of the last year about song notes and story ideas. Fast forward to this past weekend, the track is now out and it has a wicked rhythmic loop that perfectly matches the stereo-enhancing bass. These unique sounds also equally merge fantastically with the percussive additions of bells and chimes and Goulding’s impactful vocals. Additionally, the vocals and the percussion really set the tone of the track. Click ‘Play’ on the Spotify link below to stream ‘In My Dreams’, the collaborative single from Four Tet and Ellie Goulding that comes after the success of the latest album that the producer had just released earlier this year, Three, which later included four additional songs on the spin-off album, Three+. Four Tet Recalls How ‘In My Dreams’ Was Born Four Tet describes how he began working with Ellie Goulding on ‘In My Dreams’, saying “At the end of last year, Ellie texted me with a couple of voice notes for a song idea. Words and melodies she was singing into her phone and she asked me if I could use them to make something. She’s told me in the past she likes to send me vocals that I can just use as sound and turn into whatever I want (which is how the track ‘Baby’ happened a few years ago). I found other sounds to go with it and made ‘In My Dreams’“. “She added some new vocal parts but we ended up keeping the voice note recordings as the main vocal. I guess the first take is often the most magical.” The post Four Tet And Ellie Goulding Collaborate On ‘In My Dreams’ appeared first on EDMTunes.
