Getting to know Super Mal Introduce yourself and your project I’m James, one of the founder members of Super Mal, an electro project from back in the day! I recently got the rights to my single back from Universal so decided to do some mixes and give any proceeds away to a cause close to my heart which is preserving the natural world. I did the Green Man remix and I also got my current favourite artist Creatures on the dials. Explain what musical genre fits you best I was big into Daft Punk so pretended to be French, hence the band name. I was into French House and electro. But my whole life I have been big into Jungle and Drum & Bass and it’s the genre of a lot of the music I am making these days. Were you connected with music from a young age and did anyone inspire you? Yes! I got into chart music from a very young age, maybe 8, and then my tastes broadened into everything, Metal, Hard House, Jungle, Hardcore, mostly anything extreme. At school I often got into bands way before the herd arrived. I was playing instruments from age 7. What kickstarted your music career? I kickstarted it! I was networking big time, hanging out with A&R guys, listening to demos for them for work experience, working in label post rooms, doing tiny gigs, anything I could to get myself out there. Eventually I met the right people at the right time and had some success as an artist. Tell us more about your sound and how it’s evolved over time Well personally it’s evolved by exploring different genres that I love and trying to create the best music I can. Recently I’ve been working with Harvey Gordon aka Creatures who is an amazing Drum & Bass artist, everyone should check out his work if you like D&B. Any words you want to share to encourage other artists or producers? Work hard on your music and building your following and success will come, people will notice. Good music usually rises to the top and gets noticed. Don’t go in unsolicited. How do you nurture your industry relationships? I don’t to be honest, I have no need to, it’s always been a minefield. However, if I was starting out today, I would be looking for the good execs who care about music and the artists, there are good people out there! Is there anyone you’d like to thank that’s been crucial to your journey? Yeah, I’d like to thank my wife Viki, David Joseph, one of the greats, a veteran of the music industry who wrote me a good reference when I needed it most. I’ve been lucky enough to play a lot of the good ones, but Glasto on some medium sized stage would be ideal! Music is the direction I went in, and it will take care of you if you let it! One song you really couldn’t live without and why? Really hard question, Pixies ‘Debaser’, but there are loads. This one never gets old for me. Starship ‘We Built This City’ as a child blew my mind, showing my age! Fell in love with music after that to an intense degree. Paradise City Festival to celebrate 10 years of activity
Paradise City Festival is getting ready for its tenth edition, which will take place on June 27, 28, and 29 2025 in the exquisite gardens of Ribaucourt Castle in Perk, Steenokkerzeel following a few calm months. Starting on Wednesday, January 8 at 12:00, are ticket sales. From a small celebration with just 5,500 guests over two days in 2015, what began ten years ago is now a globally acknowledged event. Paradise City stays loyal to its basic values: superb music, innovative staging, and strong attention to sustainability, with more than 43,000 attendees in 2024 and an amazing line-up of 134 musicians across seven stages. Organiser Gilles De Decker underlines that the route to success has not been without difficulties. We started rather naively, with a lot of idealism and a clear vision, but it has taken years to get to where we are today. The second edition in 2016 was almost the end of Paradise City. Heavy rain and mud kept visitors away, and financially, it was a disaster. That we continued after that edition still feels like a small miracle. Paradise City once more showed its fortitude during COVID-19. The crew set up 20 smaller events on a lake with 60 boats for groups of eight and the DJ along the waterfront while most celebrations were called off. It was a creative solution in a difficult time, and it felt great to bring people together safely during those tough times – De Decker says. Ten years of Paradise City reveals many highlights when one looks back. Gilles describes a pure bliss moment on the Castle Stage in 2019 from DJ Koze’s performance: The energy broke loose, and everything came together perfectly. It was magical – Job Jobse’s closing set at the Forest Stage last summer also sticks with him – Never before have I experienced such intensity and euphoria. Paradise City Festival crowd Paradise City, in the meantime, is likewise looking outside Belgium. Next August, the celebration in Austria will feature the fourth edition of the Paradies Garten Festival, a rather smaller-scale event with three stages next to a castle outside Vienna. With success, the same fundamental principles of excellent artists, sustainability, and beautiful surroundings are carried through here. A clear taste for Austrian music has developed among enthusiasts. “It feels fantastic to see our idea flourish abroad,” notes De Decker. Thanks to outstanding accomplishments in energy, waste management, water saving, and sustainable mobility, Paradise City was given the esteemed AGF Awards as the most sustainable music event in 2024 worldwide. The festival set itself apart with creative solar energy solutions, reusable materials, and environmentally friendly transportation choices like more trains and electric shuttle buses. Someone Launched a Petition to Host a Rave at KFC
Australia's rave scene might just be heading to the deep fryer. One event organizer is rallying support for what could be the sauciest night the Australian electronic music community has seen in years: a rave at KFC. Nick Lennon was inspired by last year's Bunnings Warehouse rave—complete with DJs and sausage sizzles—which sold out in minutes and raised funds for Support Act, a music industry charity. The idea isn’t as outlandish as it sounds, considering fast food-fueled pop-ups have been an emerging as a favorite among the artist community. Berlin recently played host to a McDonald's Boiler Room set by HUGEL as ravers danced under the golden arches and dined on freshly flipped Big Macs, and DJ Snake also threw down at a rave in a McDonald's restaurant in France. An Innovative 360° Stage Is Coming to Bonnaroo In 2025
The organizers of Bonnaroo in 2025 are introducing an immersive 360° stage, Infinity, according to sources close to the festival. Details are scarce at the time of writing, but the stage is said to be "the world's largest and most immersive 360° live music experience," per marketing materials shared on social media by Festive Owl. In response to followers comparing the stage to Lost Lands' innovative "Crater" production, the festival insider claimed Infinity is "a completely new concept for a U.S. festival." It is being produced within Bonnaroo's main performance venue, Centeroo. The experience isn't just about proximity—the audio will reportedly be spatially mixed and dispersed using cutting-edge software developed by Polygon Live, a renowned music tech firm out of the UK. Ensuring a dynamic environment where attendees feel the music from every angle, the Infinity Stage will also dwarf the six other existing structures in the Centeroo hub, which hosts over 150 acts over the course of the festival. "This structure will be larger than any of the current tents in Centeroo, featuring not only speakers on the outside but also overhead and surrounding you for a fully immersive experience," Festival Owl wrote. However, what should have been a joyous occasion quickly became a nightmare for many as overcrowding and overselling became major issues throughout the festival. Attendees were unable to access key areas of the event, facing long lines for necessities, and dealing with chaotic and unsafe conditions during the exit process. Overcrowding at the Main Stage One of the most glaring issues at Proper NYE was the constant overcrowding at the main stage, which was deemed “at capacity” for most of the festival. The frustration among those stuck outside the main stage was palpable, with many expressing disappointment and disbelief at the situation. Not only was the main stage closed off, but The Lot, another key area of the festival, also faced capacity issues, further limiting attendees’ options for entertainment. Seeing so many people unable to fully enjoy the event they had paid to attend was disheartening. Attendees were forced to navigate a maze of people just to reach basic amenities, adding to chaos and disorganization. The lack of crowd control and proper planning was evident, creating a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere for all involved. Chaos During the Exit Process Once the event ended, the chaos only escalated as attendees tried to make their way out of the venue. Reports of people urinating in public near the exit, fights almost breaking out, and a general sense of unease permeated the space. The sheer volume of people trying to leave at once overwhelmed the staff and security, leading to a breakdown in crowd management and safety protocols. In a desperate attempt to maintain order, organizers had to allow attendees to pass through VIP areas to exit the venue safely. This last-minute decision highlighted the severity of the situation and the failure of event staff to anticipate and address the potential issues with crowd control properly. The lack of foresight and preparation by event organizers put attendees at risk and tarnished the overall experience of Proper NYE. A federal judge in Los Angeles has mandated that an accuser, currently identified as “Jane Doe,” must reveal her identity if she wishes to pursue her civil lawsuit against Diplo. Revenge Porn Case On December 31, Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani ruled that the plaintiff failed to demonstrate a legal need to maintain her anonymity. This left her with no choice but to disclose her name. The woman asserts that she engaged in a consensual sexual relationship with Diplo from 2016 to 2023. During this time she permitted him to record their encounters. However, she later accused him of sharing these recordings on Snapchat without her consent. Diplo vehemently denies the allegations, arguing his ability to confront his accuser is severely compromised without knowing her identity. His legal team maintains that transparency in such cases is crucial for justice. According to Billboard, Judge Almadani emphasized that anonymity is only justified in “clear-cut, high-risk situations.” She expresses doubt that the claims against Diplo falls within that category, stating: “While the court understands that the plaintiff’s allegations are deeply personal and may invite public scrutiny, the need for anonymity must be substantiated. The overarching principle of open judicial proceedings must prevail.” In light of this ruling, the accuser’s attorneys expressed concern to Billboard. Stating: “The imbalance of power in these situations is alarming and should not be overlooked by the public or the courts.
