Yulo X‘s newest track, “Echoes of Alojera,” fills my darkly lit Berlin apartment as I sit there. Friday night, and the driving house grooves coming from my speakers exactly match the city’s intensity seeping through my windows. I can’t help but get excited about what is ahead. For years Felix Neumann, the genius behind Yulo X, has been causing waves in Berlin’s electronic music scene. From the early days of “A Hundred Times Beloved” until his house music triumph as Fex Fellini, I have tracked his path. Now, with “Echoes of Alojera,” he’s extending an invitation to us into a fresh phase of his musical journey. The song provides a tantalizing taste of his forthcoming album, “Euphoria Ends.” Closing my eyes and letting the music envelop me, I’m struck by how deftly Neumann combines expressive piano lines with mesmerizing vocals. Like meeting an old acquaintance who has evolved in intriguing ways, this sound is both familiar and novel. Here Neumann’s skill to combine several electronic subgenres is really evident. I detect echoes of Max Cooper’s rich soundscapes, the vivid intensity evocative of Caribou, and grooves that would readily be confused with Floating Points. Still, Yulo X’s distinct voice emerges through all: honest, understated, and painfully passionate. Having been a long-time fan, it makes me happy to see how Neumann’s unique vocals—with their new wave and dream pop inspirations—have developed. His sound exudes confidence and maturity that reflects years of perfecting his trade in Berlin and London’s clubs. “Echoes of Alojera” is a promise of what is ahead, not only a single. Listening to the tune on repeat makes me excitedly want the whole album. If this song is any guide, “Euphoria Ends” is destined to be a turning point in Yulo X’s career – a trip across an imaginative musical terrain only Neumann could create. Berlin’s electronic music scene exudes great energy. I am appreciative to be seeing the emergence of an artist that is not hesitant to challenge limits and expose his soul via his music as I get ready to venture out into the night and lose myself on the dancing. Electronic music icon Paul Kalkbrenner announces the release of “KABELMANN,” a multi-part short film project accompanying the artist’s upcoming two-track Kabelmann EP. The films, created by Mother Berlin and SMUGGLER, and directed by Björn Rühmann, premiered at the renowned Ciclope Festival in Berlin earlier this week and were released alongside the EP today. A Tale of Connection in Two Parts “KABELMANN” unfolds in two short film chapters, each scored by Kalkbrenner’s tracks. The films follows the journey of Kabelmann (literally meaning cableman), an otherworldly character and outlier perpetually tethered to endless cables—an homage to Kalkbrenner’s analogue production methods and live-only approach to performance. Part one is the emotional story arc of an outsider. Kabelmann searches for human connection, hindered by a mysterious energy flowing through his cables. Small flashes of Kalkbrenner hint at the source behind Kabelmann’s energy as the song’s rhythms push the story forward. Part two catapults viewers into a dreamlike afterlife juxtaposed with a violent and climactic showdown, which, accompanied by Paul’s melodic and optimistic track Kabelmann 2, leaves Kabelmann’s ultimate fate ambiguous. Internationally acclaimed and award-winning director Björn Rühmann helmed the project, which was shot on location in Manchester and Berlin. The production embraced an analog aesthetic, capturing all footage on Kodak 16mm film. It is the second collaboration between Paul and Mother, who also produced the short film that accompanied his track “Schwer” last year. Björn Rühmann, the film’s director, explains: “The process of finding our Kabelmann’s destiny took forever – in a great way. We loved exploring all the ways for this character to become the perfect blend of an alter ego of the artist (Paul) – and a unique, otherworldly hero that captivates the audience. To create the most cinematic vision, we worked with fantastic people such as Kevin Howarth (Actor, Kabelmann) and Krzysztof Trojnar (DP, known for his work on Baby Reindeer), just to name a few.” Paul Kalkbrenner, who appears throughout the film as an enigmatic energy source, stated: “I have always loved exploring how my music can work in visual mediums, whether that’s in the live setting or in cinematic projects like this. German music events promoter Cosmopop, the name behind the world-famous Time Warp Festival, announced a new partnership with Insomniac, one of the world’s greatest Electronic music event promoters. This partnership entails that both promoters will support one another with organizing current and new, upcoming international events. Co-founders Steffen Charles, Robin Ebinger, and Franck Eichorn launched Cosmopop in 2003 and aside from Time Warp Festival, which has been entertaining Dance/Electronic music fans since 1994, the promoter also hosts notable European festivals such as Sonus in Croatia and Frankfurt’s Love Family Park. One great example of the new official partnership between Cosmopop and Insomniac was earlier this year when Insomniac hosted two stages at Sonus. As of right now, Cosmopop will continue to operate as usual according to an article from Resident Advisor that provides future details of events that the partnership will bring out. In the same article, Steffen Charles stated that the partnership “plans to continue working with partners in Brazil, Spain and New York, while also exploring the possibility of new ventures in Miami and Mexico City“. Furthermore, the partnership emphasizes a joint workflow, and the prominent changes will be mainly about internal marketing tools and technology. To make things easier in this partnership, Insomniac will support Cosmopop in identifying and preparing new venues while Cosmopop continues organizing its existing events. It's hard to believe it's been a decade since an 18-year-old Martin Garrix launched The Martin Garrix Show, offering an intimate glimpse into the life and career of a generational DJ. Today marks 10 years since the premiere of the EDM superstar's online docuseries, which gives fans an inside look at his experiences as one of the world's leading electronic artists. This comes as an added perk for the fans of the globally acclaimed DJ close to The Outlaw debut at the Lost Land’s Festival. The alias was carved by DJ Snake with an intent to stretch bass music to its boundaries. Instead, his new song has various UK Garage flavours, sort of resembling Fred again..‘s stuff, particularly on the drums. The vocal is minimalistic, the breakdown introduces constant tension, and the drops are surgically engineered to be as full as possible with as few elements as possible. The Dance industry mourns the loss of a beloved member today. Jack Revill, the mind behind the Jackmaster alias, was a prominent figure in the Electronic music scene, particularly known for his eclectic taste and ability to seamlessly blend different genres. He passed away last weekend after an injury which evolved badly. Jackmaster’s career took off after he began working at the Rubadub record shop in Glasgow at the age of 14. He quickly gained a reputation for his extensive knowledge of music and his exceptional DJ skills. He co-founded the influential record label and club night Numbers, and played a key role in shaping the Glasgow Electronic music scene. His family released a statement clarifying rumors about his passing. Read it below. The 30th Anniversary edition of Plastikman’s Musik, the ground-breaking second studio album by Richie Hawtin as Plastikman, has been announced for release on NovaMute on 6 December 2024. The album, originally released via NovaMute / Plus 8, followed 1993’s Sheet One and propelled Hawtin into new levels of international success. On its initial release, in Nov 1994, Hawtin was central to a burgeoning underground scene in Detroit, and the album, which expands on his unique and innovative minimal techno world, was launched with Plastikman’s first ever live performance in Aug 1994 – at the derelict Packard Plant in Detroit, in a room encased in black plastic sheets. Before the full album hit the shelves, ‘Plastique’ (later described by Q as “… the flipside to Hawtin’s early singles, all ticking percussion, feline acid tweaks and cushioned sub bass”), set the stage for a more dance floor friendly album, albeit one with an unsettling and sinister side. Musik, which featured tracks such as ‘Freek’, ‘Kriket’ (which Raf Simons used earlier this year in the Prada Men Spring/Summer 2025 show), ‘Fuk’ and ‘Marbles’, was soon heard by a much wider audience. Plastikman live appearances at Glastonbury, Tribal Gathering and a headline slot at Megadog followed soon after, prompting NME to declare Plastikman to be “Fiercer than Orbital, funkier than the Prodigy and more insatiably danceable than anything else on the bill”. The album, described by The Guardian as “music as you’ve never heard it before” and by The Wire, who made it one of their Albums of the Year, as “… a masterpiece”, defined a moment in techno that still echoes today. Now, 30 years later, to mark its anniversary, the album has been remastered from the original tapes, reminding us why Plastikman is a name that still resonates and that the album’s intensity – on and off the dance floor – has lost none of its potency in the intervening years. Andromedik has had a crazy year so far. He has hosted his own stage at Tomorrowland, embarked on his first US tour, and organised the second edition of his rave concept ‘Andromedik Invites’, for which he’s bringing Kanine, Grafix, Mozey, Emily Makis and others to Belgium. In addition to touring, performing, and organising events, he is also busy working on new music. While Andromedik blew up with tracks like ‘Forever’ and ‘Your Eyes’ back in 2018, he says his sound feels more mature now. Focusing more on the technical side of drum and bass, and working with vocalists more than ever, he’s peeling back the layers of who he wants to be in this scene. We caught up with Andromedik and talked all about his 2024 so far, and what’s yet to come. How are you doing? It’s been quite a year for you so far. I’m doing very well, I’m still enjoying the summer. I attended every festival I wanted to be at, so I went from one highlight to another, which was very fun. The rest of the year is looking good too. I’ve had my US tour for example, it was my first time there. You can see that more and more artists are going there now. Chase & Status, all the Worship guys are there. Overall, I’m really happy with how it’s going. I’m also making music that I’m very proud of and is feeling more mature. In what way does your music feel more mature for you? Around 2018, 2019, I did a lot of melodic drum and bass with a slightly happier sound than now. Not that I’m making dark stuff now, but I notice that the songs start to sound different. I find it very exciting to see other artists evolve their sound from album to album. If everything sounds the same, it gets boring pretty quickly. I’m thinking about the technical stuff, making a better mix, creating cooler sounds… Drum and bass is a genre that has a lot of possible directions, so I try to work with that. I’ve also been working with songwriters more often, and that’s something I’ve noticed more and more; working with other people, you can learn so much from them. It brings such a new, cool insight into your music. The reason that I like working with vocalists, is because I think they bring that human element everyone can connect with. I think that makes that song more special. It makes a drum and bass tune feel more like a full song. That’s feedback I often get from MCs, as well, that they really don’t have a place to MC, because it’s just constant vocals throughout my entire sets. That doesn’t mean I don’t like MCs, though! But every time they want to get in, a new vocal starts playing from the next song, and that’s no fun for them either. So that’s why I’m doing my own ‘MCing’ for now. You can also choose where you create your highlights. But don’t get me wrong, I love MCs. You’re based in Belgium, and it’s a pretty small scene there. How is the scene amongst the DJs? I think it’s really cool. We’ve got a group chat with some of the other DJs and we talk to each other every day. There’s Basstripper, Maze, Primate, Captain Bass, and a few other people. It really feels like this big group of friends. We hang out in summer to go swimming for example, go on trips together… It’s very nice because it also feels like a group of colleagues in a way. Sometimes DJing can be a very individual job, so it’s nice to be able to talk to people who are doing the same thing. I also get a lot of support from them. If you look at the Andromedik Invites stage at Tomorrowland, you’ll always find someone from that group chat that’s also part of the line-up. We try to bring each other everywhere. Last year we did a birthday bash for Primate and Used and I did a b2b there. We have a lot of fun together. You’ve just come back from your US tour. How did that feel? You’ll notice that there’s more and more happening in the US. Like I said, Chase & Status are doing crazy stuff there. Worship are doing massive tours there too. The last tour they did I was thinking, how big are all those venues here? Apart from that, Netsky is also been touring there for quite some time now. You just feel that the Americans are starting to get a feel for the faster tempo. That’s why it felt like it was the moment to go there. We also noticed that more interest came from the US. And then there was a request for Lost Lands, Excision’s festival. When they asked if I wanted to come and play, I said yes, this is the moment. And how did it feel to go there? Cool! America is a massive country. I had only been there once for a summer school, when I was still at university. It was in Georgetown, very close to Washington. It’s amazing that I can see more places in the country through my job and experience how that is. It really felt like a mini vacation. Out of all the countries you visited as a DJ, which one has been the coolest so far? 100% New Zealand. It’s such a crazy place. It doesn’t feel like you’re on Earth. It’s like you’re on another planet. The nature there is totally different from what we have in Europe. It’s such a beautiful country, I’ve been there twice now. Every time I’m there I’m like, it’s so cool that I can come here to play music. I was able to take my brother with me the last time, which was also super fun. This summer, you also had your own stage at Tomorrowland with Andromedik Invites. Can you tell us more about that? I did my first edition of Andromedik Invites at Trix last year, and that went very well. Tomorrowland noticed that. They told me that they were thinking of putting more drum and bass on the line-up, and asked me to put together a line-up for the Atmosphere stage; they’d never put D&B there before. That was really amazing, because I could pick and see which artists I wanted to book. It was nice to be able to put such a line-up together, it was new to me. I could literally just ask my favourite artists to come, and I’m really happy with the line-up we put together. The tent was packed the whole day. Merow opened the tent. She’s a Dutch bass house artist, and when she started playing her first tune, the tent was already full. It was mad to see, and I really hope we can do it again next year. You’re also throwing an Andromedik Invites rave in November in Antwerp Expo. Can you tell us more about who you invited and why you did that? If you look at those headliners, I started from the thought, who fits in a rave concept? For this edition, we wanted to go bigger than Trix. We also want to make it feel more like a rave rather than just an Andromedik headline show. I think that’s great for the Belgian scene—the more parties there are, the better. It’s just to bring fresh wind into the scene. And when I think of a warehouse rave, I think of Kanine. I think he’s gonna fit the whole Antwerp Expo vibe really well, he has that dark sound. So from the start I was like, I want Kanine on the line-up. From there, I started puzzling again. I invited Grafix last year at Trix, and he played a fantastic set, so I decided to invite him again. I also wrote the track ‘Comedown’ with him, so it makes sense for him to be there. I invited Emily Makis because she’s mega-relevant now. She writes great songs, has an amazing voice… From what I’ve seen on social media, all her concerts look amazing. I think Mozey is good to have that bit of jump up for the Belgian jump up lovers. They are artists I like. That’s the music I listen to. I think if you listen to my sets, you will hear a lot of music from the people on the line-up. That means I won’t be able to play that music myself that evening, but that’s my problem. It’s purely about what kind of music I feel and what I would like to hear when I’m standing there. I think that in the long run, the music you listen to will have an influence on your own music, and that’s why I feel like they really fit into the Andromedik Invites concept. That’s interesting! Is there anything else you would like to share with us? Absolutely. There will be a new song coming before Andromedik Invites on November 2, and there’s still a lot more to come. I think if you follow my releases, you know that I release music quite often. I’m definitely not going to stop doing that. So, lots of stuff is coming.

Pretty Lights and a small team of determined creatives have orchestrated an online auction that resonates far beyond the confines of his dreamlike dancefloors. As Western North Carolina grapples with the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the pioneering electronic artist has joined a feverish rally to offer a beacon of hope through a rare collection currently under the digital hammer. It's a luminous lot comprising over 150 coveted items, each crackling with a pulse of his creativity and his band's ineffable connection to fans. "Our fans are really about lifting each other up and the sense of community that we've built is such a beautiful thing," Meghan Zank, Smith's partner, tells EDM.com backstage prior to Pretty Lights' set at Austin City Limits. "So they all want to help. When we see any major devastation, we think, 'What can we do?'" Pretty Lights, whose real name is Derek Vincent Smith, echoed that sentiment. He and Zank worked with Erin Fritts, Jennifer Rodriguez and Emily Picart to execute the 72-hour online auction, "Creatives For WNC Relief," which features contributions from all around Pretty Lights' vast community. The band's videographer Corey Ramos, a Charlotte native, has also played a pivotal role. "We're a few hours away, so it definitely hit home, seeing how many friends live out there. Their city was devastated and they can't go back, and some friends are relocating," Ramos laments. "It was just so unexpected and they're just not prepared for that kind of stuff. They're prepared for blizzards—not flash flooding." "It was tough to see. So after a week of kind of just figuring out how we could help, we figured this might be the best way. A lot of people have love for that area through the music scene." Among the treasures up for grabs are over 15 autographed official prints—rare relics no longer available to the public—alongside tickets to upcoming shows and high-quality photo prints captured by Pretty Lights' photographer, Brittany Teuber. On October 12, 2001, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, also known as Daft Punk looked into the future and released ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’—a track that not only became a hit but also a prophecy for the music world that followed. As we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of this anthem, its robotic rhythm and hypnotic lyrics remain as influential as ever. In 2001, when electronic music was beginning to gain popularity beyond the underground rave scene, artists like The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, and Basement Jaxx were intoducing listeners to the genre. It was however Daft Punk’s ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ with its fusion of house, funk, and robotic vocals and challenging conventional song structures, that truly broke new ground by pushing the boundaries of electronic music. The core of ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ is built around a sped-up sample of Edwin Birdsong’s 1979 track ‘Cola Bottle Baby’ combined with Daft Punk’s signature use of the vocoder.
